Biggest Eid-festival in Bangladesh

Eid-ul-fitr and Eid-ul-adha are the main festival in Bangladesh. These are the happiest time of the year for every people in Bangladesh. For a week, offices and schools remains closed during the festival.

Preparation of Eid starts long before the Eid. People go shopping for Eid dress. For men, Punjabi is the special dress for Eid. For women – Shari, and Salwar-Kamiz. During Eid shopping, people purchase for themselves, and for family members and relatives as much as possible. Giving Eid present is a long tradition of Bangladesh.

Before 2-3 days of the Eid, people start to leave the cities for their home-towns and villages. Everyone return home and gather for the festival. Quiet remote villages become crowded. Everyone goes to meet each-other in the village.

Eid day starts in the very morning by men’s and kid’s taking shower and getting ready wearing new Punjabi, and go to the Eid-gah (a special place to do eid prayer). Eid prayer lasts for at least one hour. After the prayer, everyone hugs each-other. This is the most sweetest moment of the eid. This hugging going on the whole day when meet someone new. Children purchase balloon and other toys from eid-gah.

Returning home everyone eats eid special Semai. Many kinds of Semai is prepared in the eid day. With that, some other special sweet foods – payes, firni, khir. For afternoon and evening, khichuri is the main special food during eid.

From the evening, people start to go outside. In village, everyone goes each-others houses. There they eat and gossip. In the city, during the eid days are the most quiet time of the year. No traffic jam at all. This is a really nice time to walk in the roads. People goes out to the parks with kids, specially Sisu park and Fantasy park. This is continues for the 2-3 days of the eid. After that, people start to return, and continue their usual life until another eid.

Eid-ul-Fitre is one of the two major festivals of Muslim world. Bangladesh being a Muslim majority country, the joy and happiness of Eid is spread to all the citizens of the country, regardless of their religion. After one month of fasting, Eid-ul-Fitre brings happiness to all the Muslim people in Bangladesh.

The preparation of Eid begins long before the Eid day, when everyone become busy shopping new cloths. People buy for themselves, for the family, and for relatives. Everyone buy according to their ability. Then become going home. Everyone wants to celebrate their Eid with their family. People usually come to live in the major cities to earn their living. During Eid, they want to go back to their home to celebrate the festival with their family and relatives, no matter how far that place is from where they live. Every home in every village become full during this period. In this time everyone meet their relatives, friends, and neighbors whom they haven’t met for months, may be for years. People gather everywhere in the bazaars and streets of the villages. Everywhere sound of greetings is heard and embracing is seen.

This going back home become a very tough thing, specially in Dhaka. As everyone starts to go back home in the same time few days before Eid, it becomes very difficult to arrange transportation. Wealthy people go in their own vehicles. Some people rent cars from rental companies, some goes by plane. But most of the people just rely on public transports – trains, buses, and ferries. About 10 days before the Eid, selling of advance tickets for public transportation begins. All the transports become overloaded on this time. Everyone become desperate to go back home in any way. even the roofs of buses, trains, and ferries become full. A dangerous situation arises for water transports. Sometime ferries sinks because of overloading during this period. Foreigners are advised to book their transportation long before if they wish to travel during this time. Otherwise it might be a serious problem to arrange transportation during this time.

The night before Eid brings suspense to everyone, because Eid will happen next day only if the new moon is seen the night before. Everyone eagerly waits for the news of seeing new moon. The night before Eid is called “Chand Raat” or “The night of moon”. Celebrating Eid actually starts on this night. Girls, specially children color their hands with Hena on this night.

In the day of Eid, many people go to the graves of their relatives to pray for them. Before prayers, people distribute a charity locally known as fitra. Many people also avail themselves of this opportunity to distribute zakat, an Islamic obligatory alms tax of 2.5% of one’s annual savings, to the needy. Zakat is often distributed in the form of food and new clothes. After that men get ready wearing special dress “Panjabi-Payjama” after having bath, and goes to the Eid prayer. This prayer is prayed in a special fields called “Eidgah”. All the areas usually have a Eidgah. Where there is none, the prayer is prayed in the nearby mosques. Everyone wears their new dresses and use religious perfumes called “Atar”. After the prayer, everyone embrace each-other formally. This embracing continues whole day, even the whole period of Eid, when people meet friends or relatives.

Coming back home from paryer, small children so “Salam” to elderly family members touching their legs. Elderlies give them small amount of money which is called “Eidi”. Housewives cook special food during Eid. Everyone do their breakfast after that will “Semai”, which is a special noodles like food cooked with milk, sugar, and coconut. Many other sweet food is cooked beside many type of semai during Eid. Other special common food is meat, and “Khichuri”, which is made with rice and daal. Many other special food is prepared according to the ability of the families.

In the evening, everyone goes to visit visit their relatives wearing new clothes, and food is served there. This continues during the whole period of Eid, 2-3 days after the Eid. Some people go to the tourist spots after the Eid day and stay their as long as their leave permits. City people become very happy during Eid, because only in these days of holiday they can enjoy streets without traffic jam. The city become quiet and empty. People can walk in the streets relaxing. After the celebration everyone starts to come back to the cities again, and life becomes as usual, memorizing the joy of the Eid.

Bishwa Ijtema (or Bishsho Istema, Bengali: িবইজতমা,the World or Global Congregation or Meeting) is an annual Tablighi Jamaat Islamic movement congregation held at Tongi, Bangladesh by the river Turag. It is the 3rd largest Muslim congregation in the world after the Arbaeen gathering in Kerbala, Iraq [1] and Hajj. The event focuses on prayers and supplication and does not allow political discussion. [2] The local police estimated the number of attendees of 2007 ijtema to be 3 million [3] while in 2010 the number of attendees was 5 million.

The first meeting was reportedly held in 1946 [4] (although various sources indicate other dates for this) and continues to be organiztged by the Bangladesh Tablighi Jamaat. It lasts three days and is attended by over five million Muslims, making it one of the largest congregations after the Hajj to Mecca and the gathering of Muslims in Karbala, Iraq to commemorate Arbaeen. (Hajj is mandatory and a pillar of Islam,whereas the Ijtema is neither). The program concludes with the Akheri Munajat,or final prayer. The tradition of Ijtema was initiated by an Indian savant named Muhammad Ilyas al-Kandhlawi and began as a small group of religious-minded individuals gathering at a local mosque. For forty-one years Tongi has been the chosen location, although similar programs are held on a lesser scale in other countries. The Ijtema is non-political, and therefore it draws people of all persuasion. Prayer is held for the spiritual adulation, exaltation and welfare of the Muslims community. This immensely popular program gives the people of Bangladesh an opportunity to interact with Muslims from other countries and is commonly attended by prominent political figures.

The congregation takes place at an area comprising 160 acres (0.65 km 2 ) of land (0.25 square mile). Devotees from approximately 150 countries, including the host country, Bangladesh, attend the three-day Ijtema seeking divine blessings from Allah. In recent years, over twenty thousands foreign delegates attend the congregation each year. Special rates are provided by Bangladesh Biman's world wonder fund.

Despite the large number of devotees living within a confined space, generally there is very few problems of sanitation, cooking, and internal movements. It is believed to be possible because of the minimalist approach adopted by the devotees. Devotees have reduced their own requirements and developed a respect for others' requirements.

Muhammad Ilyas revived the Tabligh movement in 1927 at Saharanpur of Uttar Pradesh,India and at the same time organized regional congregation or Ijtema. In course of time, Ijtema movement spread throughout the subcontinent and also influenced other regions. After the partition of Bengal in 1947, three Ijtema centres developed in three parts of the subcontinent - India, West Pakistan and East Pakistan. Biswa Ijtema at Tongi is the annual Tabligh congregation of the current Bangladesh. In addition to Tongi, Ijtemas are now held in Raiwind, Pakistan and Bhopal,Madhya Pradesh, India. However, in terms of popular attendance, the Tongi Ijtema is the largest of all these congregations. [3]

In 2008, the event had to be cut short to only one day due to rain and cold weather which left three attendees dead. [5]

16 December Victory Day

Today is National Victory Day. The 43rd anniversary of victory earned through sacrifice of enormous bloodshed. The day of emergence of Bangladesh as an independent sovereign state to this world.

After a long 9 month of armed struggle, sacrificing a lot of lives and huge bloodshed, valiant Bengalis claimed the victory on this very day. After oppressing the freedom seeking of this land the Pakistani attacking force surrendered to the people on this very day. With this surrender of the Pakistani forces it came to an end of a two and a half decades of exploitation and deprivation of the Pakistanis. The nation got free from persecution and oppression.

Everyone is now analyzing the gains and expectations of the 43 years spent after independence. In this 43rd anniversary of Victory the departed souls of the freedom fighters having peace – the heinous war criminals gradually being punished. The whole nation will commemorate the millions of martyrs who sacrificed themselves with utmost homage and love. For the supreme sacrifices of these great souls we got an independent and sovereign Bangladesh. At the same time strong commitment will be expressed to make Bangladesh a prosperous future oriented one. To observe the occasion many programs would be celebrated by the government and non-government initiatives. All government and non-government institutions will hoist the National flag today. Various political parties, social and cultural organizations and the educational institutes will hold programs. Honorable Prime Minister will commence the day’s programs by offering floral wreaths at the Jatiya Smrity Soudha.

The important roads and road islands are decorated with National and colorful flags to mark this day. Special featured pages are published by the national dailies explaining the tenor of the day. Radio and television channels will host special programs. Special prayers and monajats will be offered at the mosques, temples and other religious places of worship, wishing peace and prosperity. At the very moment of sunrise, gun salutes with blasting cannons 31 times will initiate the days programs. There would be a sea of gathering of common people at the Jatiya Smrity Soudha who would come to pay homage to the great monument. Overflowed with the emotion of victory, Jatiya Smriti Soudha and Shaheed Minars will be covered by the flowers, floral wreaths of the common people everywhere. That thunderous voice of Bangabandhu would be heard across all over the country. The sun of independence that was set at the Palashi’s mango orchard on 1957, has again risen up on this 16th December on 1971. The glorious moment of victory was initiated in this day. 91 thousand 549 Pakistani soldiers surrendered in the broad daylight. The Chief of Eastern regional wing of Pakistan army Lt. General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi signed the surrender document to the supreme commander to the Eastern regional wing of the Allied forces Lt. General Jagjit Sigh Aurora at the historical Race Course Ground (well known as Suhrawardi Uddyan today). Not through negotiations, not through somebody’s kind favor, a victory through the struggle sacrificing sea of blood, which defeated the Pakistan forces and were bound to surrender with heads all down. World beholds the birth of a new independent state. And the glorious leader who guided and lead the nation to this victory, is perpetually unfading and luminous, the greated Bangali in thousand years, the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Delight comes in many ways to life. But being able to observe the victory through sacrifice of million bloodshed earning freedom of motherland from oppression of alien forces has no comparison at all! The glorious and victorious sun has risen to this land of 55 thousand square miles on this day. The freedom crazy Bangalis snatched this sun smashing the oppression and subservience. The sun that glow with the blood stains of the sacrifices the color of victory. This color of blood and victory along with the greenery of Bengal makes our National Flag. That sun of that victory day had the visions of the future, for which 3 million people sacrificed their lives. After a long 9 months of suffering the pains in the belly, a new country was born, an independent and sovereign Bangladesh.

In fact the glorious moment of independence of Bangladesh did not come just in a day. Behind this lies the history of sweaty struggles of the nation. And if anyone would be thought as the great commander of these struggles the name of the greatest Bengali of thousand years the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman would always be there. Bangabandhu means Bangladesh. Bangabandhu means freedom. Bangabandhu means our new entity. His existence belongs every inch of the 55 thousand square miles of the land.

Bengalis gave their blood in the British colonial age. Struggled against oppression, exploitation and deprivation. In the struggles and movements of about 200 years, this Bengali nation has sacrificed the most bloods. On 1947, Bangali nation’s efforts were there in establishing a state called Pakistan. Bengalis were the main architect behind the making of Pakistan. But it took only a few years to get out of the disillusion. The oppression and exploitation, for which they had driven away the British, the same came to their lives in Pakistan in a few years. That begun the struggles of a new era. Pakistanis considered the people of this land their underlings. Bengalis were being relived in terms of economically and politically and in every aspect. They even refused to accept the electoral results. The turning points of history against them came in the form of 52’s Language movement, 66’s Historical 6 point demand movement and 69’s mass revolt etc. The final blow was the result of the election of 1970s. A new chapter begun. On the glorious day of 7th March, Bangabandhu declared in his thunderous proclamation, “Struggle of this time, is the struggle for freedom, this struggle is our struggle for independence”. This proclamation brought new enthusiasm to the nation, brought craziness for the desire for freedom. About 90 thousand Pakistani soldiers accepted the defeat through surrender on this day at the Race Course Ground. To observe the glorious Victory day Bangladesh is decorated as new. Whole country is decorated with the Red and Green flags.

At the dawn of this morning a 31 times gun salute will be done through cannon fires initiating the day. Today is government holiday. National flags will be hoisted with glory on every buildings of the country today. Honorable President Mohammad Abdul Hamid Advocate and Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate speeches marking the day.

6:34am : Offering floral wreaths to the Jatiya Smriti Soudha (as soon as the sun rises) (Will be synced with Honorable President and Honorable Prime Minister’s schedules)
8:00am : Paying homage to the mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Bangabhaban.
10:00am : Offering floral wreaths, Jiarat, dua and Milad Mehfil to the graveyard of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Tungipara where he eternally resting in peace.

Bijoy Rally

The leaders of all thana branches of the Metropolitan Dhaka City Awami League and the Members of National Parliament will come in parades from their own localities to the place of surrender of the Pakistani Attacking forces the Suhrawardi Udyan and gather together at the Monument of Shikha Chirantan, and will pay homage at 4:20pm when the Pakistan Army actually surrendered at this time on 1971. After paying homage they will start towards the Dhanmondi 32 with Bijoy Parade.

Also mentionable that, 10am in the morning the Central Program would be observed where the presidium member of the Central Executive committee Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim MP, Kazi Zafar Ullah, Organizing Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim MP, Secretary of International Affairs Lt. Col. Muhammad Faruque Khan MP, Secretary of Salvation and Social Welfare Faridunnahar Laily, Secretary of Religious Affairs Alhajj Advocate Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Secretary of Labor and Manpower Habibur Rahman Siraj, Member of Central Executive Committee Abdur Rahman MP et al and leaders would be present at the occasion.

What Is Forex?

If you’ve ever traveled to another country, you usually had to find a currency exchange booth at the airport, and then exchange the money you have in your wallet (if you’re a dude) or purse (if you’re a lady) or man purse (if you’re a metrosexual) into the currency of the country you are visiting.
You go up to the counter and notice a screen displaying different exchange rates for different currencies. You find “Japanese yen” and think to yourself, “WOW! My one dollar is worth 100 yen?! And I have ten dollars! I’m going to be rich!!!” (This excitement is quickly killed when you stop by a shop in the airport afterwards to buy a can of soda and, all of a sudden, half your money is gone.)
When you do this, you’ve essentially participated in the forex market! You’ve exchanged one currency for another. Or in forex trading terms, assuming you’re an American visiting Japan, you’ve sold dollars and bought yen.
Before you fly back home, you stop by the currency exchange booth to exchange the yen that you miraculously have left over (Tokyo is expensive!) and notice the exchange rates have changed. It’s these changes in the exchanges rates that allow you to make money in the foreign exchange market.
The foreign exchange market, which is usually known as “forex” or “FX,” is the largest financial market in the world. Compared to the measly $22.4 billion a day volume of the New York Stock Exchange, the foreign exchange market looks absolutely ginormous with its $5 TRILLION a day trade volume. Forex rocks our socks!
Let’s take a moment to put this into perspective using monsters…
The largest stock market in the world, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), trades a volume of about $22.4 billion each day. If we used a monster to represent NYSE, it would look like this…

You hear about the NYSE in the news every day… on CNBC… on Bloomberg…on BBC… heck, you even probably hear about it at your local gym. “The NYSE is up today, blah, blah”. When people talk about the “market”, they usually mean the stock market. So the NYSE sounds big, it’s loud and likes to make a lot of noise.

But if you actually compare it to the foreign exchange market, it would look like this…

Oooh, the NYSE looks so puny compared to forex! It doesn’t stand a chance!

The currency market is over 200 times BIGGER! It is HUGE! But hold your horses, there’s a catch!
That huge $5 trillion number covers the entire global foreign exchange market, BUT retail traders (that’s us) trade the spot market and that’s about $1.49 trillion. So you see, the forex market is definitely huge, but not as huge as the media would like you to believe.

History of world heritage Sundarban

The history of the area can be traced back to 200–300 AD. A ruin of a city built by Chand Sadagar has been found in the Baghmara Forest Block. During the Mughal period, the Mughal Kings leased the forests of the Sundarbans to nearby residents. Many criminals took refuge in the Sundarbans from the advancing armies of Emperor Akbar. Many have been known to be attacked by tigers. [4] Many of the buildings which were built by them later fell to hands of Portuguese pirates, salt smugglers and dacoits in the 17th century. Evidence of the fact can be traced from the ruins at Netidhopani and other places scattered all over Sundarbans. [5] The legal status of the forests underwent a series of changes, including the distinction of being the first mangrove forest in the world to be brought under scientific management. The area was mapped first in Persian, by the Surveyor General as early as 1764 following soon after proprietary rights were obtained from the Mughal Emperor Alamgir II by the British East India Company in 1757. Systematic management of this forest tract started in the 1860s after the establishment of a Forest Department in the Province of Bengal,in British India. The management was entirely designed to extract whatever treasures were available, but labour and lower management mostly were staffed by locals, as the British had no expertise or adaptation experience in mangrove forests. [6]

The first Forest Management Division to have jurisdiction over the Sundarbans was established in 1869. In 1875 a large portion of the mangrove forests was declared as reserved forests under the Forest Act, 1865 (Act VIII of 1865). The remaining portions of the forests were declared a reserve forest the following year and the forest, which was so far administered by the civil administration district, was placed under the control of the Forest Department. A Forest Division, which is the basic forest management and administration unit, was created in 1879 with the headquarters in Khulna,Bangladesh. The first management plan was written for the period 1893–98. [7][8]

In 1911, it was described as a tract of waste country which had never been surveyed, nor had the census been extended to it. It then stretched for about 266 kilometres (165 mi) from the mouth of the Hugli to the mouth of the Meghna river and was bordered inland by the three settled districts of the 24 Parganas,Khulna and Bakerganj. The total area (including water) was estimated at 16,900 square kilometres (6,526 sq mi). It was a water-logged jungle, in which tigers and other wild beasts abounded. Attempts at reclamation had not been very successful. The Sundarbans was everywhere intersected by river channels and creeks, some of which afforded water communication throughout the Bengal region both for steamers and for native boats.

Geography

The Sundarban forest lies in the vast delta on the Bay of Bengal formed by the super confluence of the Padma, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers across southern Bangladesh. The seasonally flooded Sundarbans freshwater swamp forests lie inland from the mangrove forests on the coastal fringe. The forest covers 10,000 square kilometres (3,900 sq mi) of which about 6,000 square kilometres (2,300 sq mi) are in Bangladesh. [9] It became inscribed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997. The Indian part of Sundarbans is estimated to be about 4,110 square kilometres (1,590 sq mi), of which about 1,700 square kilometres (660 sq mi) is occupied by waterbodies in the forms of river, canals and creeks of width varying from a few meters to several kilometres.

The Sundarbans is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests. The interconnected network of waterways makes almost every corner of the forest accessible by boat. The area is known for the eponymous Royal Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), as well as numerous fauna including species of birds, spotted deer,crocodiles and snakes. The fertile soils of the delta have been subject to intensive human use for centuries, and the ecoregion has been mostly converted to intensive agriculture, with few enclaves of forest remaining. The remaining forests, taken together with the Sundarbans mangroves, are important habitat for the endangered tiger. Additionally, the Sundarbans serves a crucial function as a protective barrier for the millions of inhabitants in and around Khulna and Mongla against the floods that result from the cyclones. The Sundarbans has also been enlisted among the finalists in the New7Wonders of Nature.

Eid-e-Milad un Nabi. "Birth of the Prophet as Light of the world"

There are many narrations, that support the Milad Sharif.

Here are a selection of Hadith (Narrations of the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) :

1) The Prophet of Allah (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him) himself stated his own birth from very beginning He says: "I had been transferred, continuously, from purified offspring to purified wombs. I had been given birth by a lawful marriage not by adultery. When Allah Almighty sent Adam Alaihis Salam on earth so He put me in his spine and then transferred in Nuh Alaihis salam in his boat, and then in Ibrahim Alaihis salam Allah Almighty transferred me continuously from noble offspring to the purified wombs up to that He brought me in my parents who never committed adultery."

(Tafseer Ruhul Bayan, Vol. 3, Page 54)

Milad means the time of birth or place of birth. So the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) himself celebrated his own Milad. In the same way many Muslims following the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) narrate the events of the birth of the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) .This hadith is the clear proof Milad un Nabi (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him) and as well as tell us that to celebrate Milad un Nabi (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) is not innovation (bidat) but it is a sunnah (tradition) of Prophet (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him).

There are many other narrations which narrate that the Prophet of Allah (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) celebrate his own Milad several times, some of those narrations have been written in Mishkat Sharif.

2) "The one who rejoices on the birth day of the Holy Prophet would not be severely punished and it is hopped that a Muslim who celebrate the Milad un Nabi (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him), will not be punished in hell. Imam Bukhari Rahmatullah Alaih narrates that Abu Lahab would be punished lightly in the hell on Monday. Because he rejoiced and freed his handmaid indicating by his finger, when the Prophet of Allah Almighty (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) took birth. So as a reward of happiness on Milad un Nabi (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) he would be given water by his finger. (Saheehul Bukhari Vol. 2, Page 764)

Imam Shams ud din Naseer Al Damaishqi narrates this hadith in poetry. Here is its translation.

"If such kafir was denounced (in the Quran)

And perished are his hands, and in the flame is his eternal abode.

It is narrated every Monday.

His torment is made easy for his joy at the birth of Ahmad. (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him)

What is the expectation then of a servant who spent all his life.

Happy with the arrival of Ahmad (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) and died on the one ness of Allah Almighty. (Haul-ul-Ahtifal Bil Mawlid Al-Nabvi Al Sharif, Page 11)

3) The Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) celebrated his own Milad by having fast. Imam Wali ud din write this narration with reference to the Saheeh Muslim. When the Prophet of Allah (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) was asked about the fast of Monday. He (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) said:

"I took birth and the Quran was revealed upon me in this day."

(Mishkat Sharif, Page 179)

This narration proves that to celebrate Milad un Nabi is a tradition of the Holy Prophet (Allah’s Grace and Peace be upon him) on every Monday. Secondly it is lawful to fix a particular day for Milad un Nabi (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him). Thirdly it is an act of sunnah to worship in the pleasure of the Milad un Nabi (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him)

Evidence of general consensus of Muslim ummah and scholars (Ulema)

1) Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Suyuti in his famous book "Al-Hawii Lil-Fatawii" allocated a special chapter on that topic and named it "The Excellence of Objective in Celebrating the Mawlid" where he said: The question under consideration is what the verdict of the Shari'ah on celebrating the Holy Birthday of the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) during the month of Rabbi-ul-Awwal. From the point of view of Shari'ah is this a praiseworthy action or a blameworthy one? And do those who arrange such celebration Receive blessings or not? He said:

"The reply to this question is that in my view the Milad Shareef (Celebration of the Birthday of the Noble Prophet Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) is in fact such an occasion of happiness on which people assemble and recite the Holy Qu'ran to the extent that is easy. Then they relate the prophecies concerning the appearance of the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) that have been transmitted in Ahadith and Author, and the miraculous events and signs that took place on his birth. Then food is set before them and according to their desire they partake thereof to satisfaction. This festival of celebrating the birthday of the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) is a Bid'ah Hasanah (good Innovation) and those arranging it will get blessing, since in such a celebration is found the expression of joy and happiness at the greatness and eminence of the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) and his birth".

Even Ibn Tay'miah said in his book "Necessity of the Right Path", p. 266, 5th line from the bottom of that page, published by Dar Al-Hadith, the following:

"As far as what people do during the Milad, either as a rival celebration to that which the Christian do during the time of Christ's birthday or as an expression of their love and admiration and a sign of praise for the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him), Allah Almighty will surely reward them for such Ijtihad". He then said: "Although Milad was not practiced by (Salaf), they should have done so since there was no objection against it from the Shari'ah point of view".

2. Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Qastalani, who gave commentary on Sahih Bukhari, said: "May Allah Almighty shower his Mercy upon a person who takes the days of the month of Rabbi-ul-Awwal, in which the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) was born, as days of feast and celebration for doing so is the best cure for the heart of an ailing person."

3. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar was asked, same reference of Imam Suyuti, about Milad Shareef. His reply was:

"Milad Shareef is, in fact, an innovation, which was not transmitted from any pious predecessor in the first three centuries. Nevertheless, both acts of virtue as well as acts of abomination are found in it (i.e. Sometimes acts of virtue are found therein and sometimes acts of abomination). If in the Milad Shareef only acts of virtue are done and acts of abomination are abstained from, then the Milad Shareef is a Bid'ah Hasanah (good innovation), otherwise not."

He then added "

"To do any virtuous act and to observe it annually as means of recollection for any special day on which Allah Almighty has bestowed any favor or removed any calamity is a form of showing gratitude to Allah Almighty. Gratitude to Allah Almighty is expressed through different kinds of Ibaadah (worship) -prostration and standing in prayer, charity and recitation of the Holy Qu'ran. And what is a greater favor from Allah Almighty can there be than the appearance of the Prophet of Mercy (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) on this day (i.e. 12th of Rabbi-ul-Awwal)?" Some people do not limit it and celebrate the Milad Shareef on any day of Rabbi-ul-Awwal. Nay, some people have extended it even more and increased the period to the whole year. According to the latter, the Milad Shareef can be celebrated on any day of the year. The objective here is the same, i.e. to rejoice at and celebrate the Holy Birth of the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him).

4. Imam Abu-Bakr Abdullah Al-Dimashqi compiled a number of books on the subject and called them "Collection of Traditions on the Birth of the Chosen Prophet", "The Pure Expression on the Birthday of the Best of Creations" and "The Spring for the Thirsty One on the Birth of the Rightly Guided".

5. Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Iraqi wrote a book and called it "The Pure Spring on the Sublime Birth".

6. Imam Ibn Dahyah wrote a book and called it "Enlightenment on the Birthday of the Bearer of Good News, The Warner".

7. Imam Mulla Ali Qari wrote a book and called it "The Quenching Spring on the Birthday of the Prophet". (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him)

8. Imam Shams ul-Din bin Naseer Al-Dimashqi, said in his book: "The Spring for the Thirsty One on the Birth of the Rightly Guided" about the story of Abu Lahab that he will receive a light punishment every Monday for expressing joy at the birth of the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon him) on that day. The Imam said the following verse of poetry, the translation is: If such Kafir was denounced in the (Qur'an) and perished are his hands, and in the Flames is his eternal abode It is narrated that every Monday.

9. Imam Shams Ul-Din Ibn aL-Jazri, the Imam of reciters, wrote a book and named it "The Scent of Notification on the Blessed Birthday".

10. Imam Al-Hafiz Ibn Al-Jawzi said in the description of Milad: "Peace and Tranquility takes over during that year and a good glad tiding to obtain your wish and inspiration".

11. Imam Abu-Shamah, The Sheikh of Al Hafiz Al Nawawi, said:

"The best of the innovations of our times is what is carried out on the day of corresponding to the birthday of our Beloved Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him), where people give out donations, practice what is right, express their joy and happiness, in doing so is surely a sign of love and admiration for the Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon him)".

Regarding the validity of celebrating the birth of Nabi SAW is a divisive issue with some ulema allowing it and others not. And when there is a genuine difference of opinion on any matter then there one is obliged to condemn the act. This ummah is facing many difficulties, surely our efforts should be used to help against those atrocities. We will be questioned on how we spent our time and I for one will not want to answer that I spent my time arguing with my brother whether we should be celebrating the birth of His Prophet of Mercy SAW, but I rather say that I spent my time providing food and shelter, constructing His Houses (masjids), helping the orphans etc..

A move from March to January by Borgna Brunner The celebration of the new year on January 1st is a relatively new phenomenon. The earliest recording of a new year celebration is believed to have been in Mesopotamia, c. 2000 B.C. and was celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, in mid-March. A variety of other dates tied to the seasons were also used by various ancient cultures. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians began their new year with the fall equinox, and the Greeks celebrated it on the winter solstice.

Early Roman Calendar: March 1st Rings in the New Year The early Roman calendar designated March 1 as the new year. The calendar had just ten months, beginning with March. That the new year once began with the month of March is still reflected in some of the names of the months. September through December, our ninth through twelfth months, were originally positioned as the seventh through tenth months (septem is Latin for "seven," octo is "eight," novem is "nine," and decem is "ten."

January Joins the Calendar The first time the new year was celebrated on January 1st was in Rome in 153 B.C. (In fact, the month of January did not even exist until around 700 B.C., when the second king of Rome, Numa Pontilius, added the months of January and February.) The new year was moved from March to January because that was the beginning of the civil year, the month that the two newly elected Roman consuls—the highest officials in the Roman republic—began their one-year tenure. But this new year date was not always strictly and widely observed, and the new year was still sometimes celebrated on March 1.

Julian Calendar: January 1st Officially Instituted as the New Year In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar introduced a new, solar-based calendar that was a vast improvement on the ancient Roman calendar, which was a lunar system that had become wildly inaccurate over the years. The Julian calendar decreed that the new year would occur with January 1, and within the Roman world, January 1 became the consistently observed start of the new year.

Middle Ages: January 1st Abolished In medieval Europe, however, the celebrations accompanying the new year were considered pagan and unchristian like, and in 567 the Council of Tours abolished January 1 as the beginning of the year. At various times and in various places throughout medieval Christian Europe, the new year was celebrated on Dec. 25, the birth of Jesus; March 1; March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation; and Easter.

Gregorian Calendar: January 1st Restored In 1582, the Gregorian calendar reform restored January 1 as new year's day. Although most Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar almost immediately, it was only gradually adopted among Protestant countries. The British, for example, did not adopt the reformed calendar until 1752. Until then, the British Empire —and their American colonies— still celebrated the new year in March.

There are dozens of wonderful things associated with the holiday season, but where do they come from? Over the years, we have come up with songs and TV specials that have formed a unique part of Christmas history that goes beyond the lights, tree, and ornaments. You might be surprised how many of the Hoideas we consider to be set in stone as part of the festive period are relatively new traditions the simple concept of observing a feast in honor of Jesus birth at the same time as other Roman festivals beginning in the 3rd century was just the start of our tendency to shift the celebration to match up with current culture.

Christmas carols have mostly been written by untrained musicians and little-known poets. However, two of today's most popular tunes were created by famous composers: Hark the Herald Angels Sing is the product of Felix Mendelssohn's time in England and Joy to the World was written by George Frederick Handel as piece for men to sing.

That was the Night Before Christmas first appeared in print two days before Christmas in 1823. Originally titled. A Visit from St. Nicholas, the author (Clement Moore) published the poem anonymously in the Troy, New York newspaper some say he was afraid of rebuke thanks to his professorship at Columbia College (now University), famous at the time for its seminary program.

Christmas cards were introduced by Sir Henry Cole around 1843, when he sold a design by John Horsley in a shop in the famous commercial district of Bond Street in London. The idea took another decade to catch on, though, as the cost of postage and printing were both too high for most people. (By comparison, estimates say more than 2 billion cards are sent in the United Kingdom alone now.)

Electric tree lights first appeared in 1882, just three years after Thomas Edison debuted his lighting system in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Credit for the idea of putting the bulbs strands together to string on the branches of trees goes to his assistant, Edward Johnson.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer first appeared as part of an advertising campaign for Montgomery Ward. The Bangladesh Liberation War [a]

(Bengali: মুিযুMuktijuddho) was a revolutionary independence war in South Asia during 1971 which established the republic of Bangladesh. [14] The war pitted East Pakistan (later joined by India) against West Pakistan,and lasted over a duration of nine months. It witnessed large-scale atrocities,the exodus of 10 million refugees and the displacement of 30 million people. [15]

The war broke out on 26 March 1971, when the Pakistani Army launched a military operation called Operation Searchlight against Bengali civilians, students, intelligentsia and armed personnel, who were demanding that the Pakistani military junta accept the results of the 1970 first democratic elections of Pakistan,which were won by an eastern party, or to allow separation between East and West Pakistan. Bengali politicians and army officers announced the declaration of Bangladesh's independence in response to Operation Searchlight. Bengali military, paramilitary and civilians formed the Mukti Bahini (Bengali: মুিবািহনী "Liberation Army"), which engaged in guerrilla warfare against Pakistani forces. The Pakistan Army, in collusion with religious extremist [16][17] militias (the Razakars, Al-Badr and Al-Shams), engaged in the systematic genocide and atrocities of Bengali civilians, particularly nationalists, intellectuals, youth and religious minorities. [18][19][20][21][22]

Bangladesh government-in-exile was set up in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) in the Indian State of West Bengal.

India entered the war on 3 December 1971, after Pakistan launched pre-emptive air strikes on northern India. Overwhelmed by two war fronts, Pakistani defences soon collapsed. On 16 December, the Allied Forces of Bangladesh and India defeated Pakistan in the east. The subsequent surrender resulted in the largest number of prisoners-of-war since World War II.

He joints a “lato Gan team” from his childhood and he gain famous to make various type of songs from there. Later on he takes an admission for studies in Bodhoman and Dirampur high school in Trysal, Moymonshing District. He became famous to write “Kovigan” when he is 11-12 years old. During his study of class ten in 1914 he joint the army of Bengali regiment and gone to Korachi. He began his Literary Life from there. Always he tries to write against Social injustice and Restriction from others, for this reason called him “Biddrohi Kobi”. His each Composition makes Bangla language rich and proud. He was like an angel for Bangla language. Poems, novels, plays, short stories, and essays in every sector he kept his healthy Contribution. Also he achieve famous by writing song, gojol. For Rebel Poetry in 1029 he punished jailed as first time and later on he was got sentence for six month as second time.

In 1942 poet was attacked by chronic disease and he left his voice when he was 40 years old. After establish Bangladesh bring sick poet to Dhaka and give him citizenship in 1972 and awarded as the national poet of Bangladesh. In 1974 Dhaka University awarded him Doctorate Degree. In 29 August-1976 at PG hospital Dhaka poet left his life. Beside the Dhaka University mosque occupied him with entire military honor.

His famous Poetry is “Agnibina”, “Bisher Bashi”, “Chhay note”, “Proloy Shikha” and “chokkrobak” and so on. Story and Novel is “bethar dan”, “Rocter Bedon”, Shuly mala”, Mittu khudha” etc very popular. And famous Article is “Jugbany”, “Durdiner jattry” etc. On the other hand he had a lot of song also. He wrote 58 books and near about 6000 songs.

Five Palestinians have been killed in shelling after Israel ended a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, medics said.

In a statement on Sunday the Israeli military attributed its decision to resume aerial, naval and ground activity to "Hamas's incessant rocket fire throughout the humanitarian window, which was agreed upon for the civilian population in Gaza".

Smoke was seen billowing over several locations in Gaza shortly after the Israeli announcement.

The Gaza Ministry of Health said two Palestinians were killed in Nusairat refugee camp in the central area of the Strip and three others in Khan Younis in the south. The death toll now stands at more than 1,000.

Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston, reporting from Gaza City, said there was tank shelling in the east of the Strip, and naval ships pounded the beaches in the west. There were also several air strikes.

An air strike in central Gaza City hit al-Shoroq building, which houses foreign and local media, including Hamas-affiliated al-Aqsa TV. The media offices were evacuated earlier this week.

Earlier on Sunday, Palestinian fighters resumed rocket attacks into Israel, firing 20 rockets overnight and into the morning. Air-raid sirens sounded throughout southern and central Israel during morning rush hour.

At least five rockets landed in Israel and two others were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defence system, the Israeli military said.

The UN had asked Palestinian factions in Gaza to accept a 24-hour-long ceasefire extension, following Israel's approval to prolong the humanitarian truce for another day.

Israel said, however, that it would continue to target tunnels used by Hamas and other groups.

Hamas rejected the Israeli offer as unacceptable because it did not include a provision for the withdrawal of Israeli troops and for residents in Gaza to return to their homes.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza, told Al Jazeera: "Any humanitarian ceasefire that doesn't include the complete withdrawal of its positions in the Gaza Strip, doesn’t enable the residents to go back to their homes and doesn’t allow the evacuation of the wounded, is unacceptable."

Israel's security cabinet had earlier approved extending the ceasefire, which begun early on Saturday, until midnight local time (21:00 GMT) on Sunday.

"At the request of the United Nations, the cabinet has approved a humanitarian hiatus until tomorrow [Sunday] at 24:00. The IDF [Israel Defence Forces] will act against any breach of the ceasefire," an Israeli official said in a statement.

After the ceasefire began early on Saturday, Palestinians in Gaza took advantage of the lull in fighting to retrieve their dead and stock up on food, flooding into the streets to discover scenes of massive destruction in some areas.

At least 1,054 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed and more than 6,000 injured since Israel launched its offensive on the Mediterranean enclave, home to 1.8 million Palestinians, on July 8.

Israel said five more of its soldiers were killed in pre-truce fighting in Gaza and two others died of their wounds in hospital.

Another soldier was killed by shell fire overnight, bringing the army death toll to 43.

Three civilians, including two Israeli citizens and a Thai labourer, have been killed by rockets fired from Gaza.

Eid-ul-Fitr is a day of thanksgiving and jubilation as it signifies the successful completion of the sacred month of Ramadan.

This festival marks the completion of an act of duty and devotion. It teaches us the lesson that real happiness arises from performing one’s duty and making sacrifices for a noble objective.

Fasting is one of the most significant pillars of Islam. The practice of fasting sublimates the inner self of man and inculcates discernment of the pangs and hardships which the poor and needy face. This feeling is awakened in all those, whether rich or poor, young or old, who observe fasting. It is the loftiest achievement of moral exercises which is celebrated with the greatest zest and verve on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.

All kinds of spiritual adorations during the sacred month of Ramadan are in celebration of the revelation of the last and perfect message of Allah to humanity, for the limitless and vast favour on mankind in the shape of the Glorious Qur’an and its implication in the dedication and devotion in the month of Ramadan to which the Divine Book had led. Says the Qur’an: Allah has revealed to you the Book and Wisdom and taught you what you did not know before. Allah’s goodness to you has been great indeed.” (4:113)

There are multiple results of fasting (Siyam) in the shape of vigorous duties, moral and spiritual self-discipline and austerity. This reward equips man to swim in the roughest seas of life. It is in this concept that the Qur’an has clearly expressed the act of fasting as a blessing and not a calamity. Allah desires your well being, not your discomfort. He desires you to fast the whole of the month so that you may magnify Him for giving you His guidance, and that you may give thanks.

It is with this spirit of thanksgiving that Eid-ul-Fitr is observed all over the world by Muslim Ummah by offering prayers to Allah, and rejoicing and festivity on the accomplishment of an act of dedication and submission to the Almighty. The Muslim Ummah meditates and pays obeisance to their Lord in congregation, displaying the real spirit of brotherhood, equality and fraternity through the prayers and through the zest of meeting and embracing the Muslim brothers.

Why The Ramadan So Impotent For Muslim Ummha.

The true meaning of Ramadan is found through spiritual reflection and worship. Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by Allah (God). The fast that defines the month is intended to teach Muslims about humility before God, compassion, self-control, charity and honesty. Ramadan is the name of both the month during which Muslims seek to purify their faith and the fast that serves to deepen their connection to God.

Fasting

Muslims must fast during Ramadan, except travelers, the ill and women in certain circumstances, such as pregnancy. The fast begins each day at dawn and continues until sunset. No food or liquids are ingested during daylight hours. Muslims do not smoke during the fast and do not engage in marital relations. In general, personal indulgences are avoided, along with anything that might lead a worshipper away from prayer and the study of the Quran.

Many Muslim communities divide the Quran into 30 sections and recite a section each day during Ramadan. The month is an opportunity to seek spiritual purity, and the fast directs Muslims away from worldly distractions.

Dining

During Ramadan, Muslims prepare special meals to share. At sunset, three dates are eaten to commemorate the way the Prophet Muhammad broke his fast, followed by the offering of a special prayer. This often begins a festive dinner that celebrates the fellowship of Muslim families and friends. Banquets celebrate the unity of the Islamic world and the joy of community by emphasizing the special warmth of Ramadan. Often ornamental lights or lanterns are hung to decorate the festive gatherings.

Charity

Another of the many meanings of Ramadan is charity. Muslims give to the poor all year as an act of faith, but Ramadan is an especially sanctified time to donate to the needy. In many communities, public tables of food are set up where the poor can break their fasts in the evening.

Revelations

It was during Ramadan that the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Muhammad. The anniversary of this special night is considered the holiest night of the year, a time when Muslims offer special night prayers in the belief that God has all power.

For the last 10 days of Ramadan, Muslims who can afford to do so may go on spiritual retreats to the mosque, where they devote their time to spiritual communion.

“TELECOMMUNICATION INDUSTRY IN BANGLADESH.”

INTRODUCTION:

“Watson, come here: I want you.” This was the first message ever transmitted from one place to another, through a device called telephone. American genius, Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) along with his assistant Thomas Watson invented the device. It was March 10, 1876, an important day for human civilization, the first step towards developing means of communication. We’ve come a long way since then. Today, telephone is a part of our everyday life. Besides telephone, now-a-days mobile phones are playing a great role to communicate from one place to another. Today, telecommunication is one of the major parts of life. Nowadays, the phone is not only used for making calls, among many other functions it’s used for communicating through text-messages and so called multi-media messages, as well as to connect us to the internet. The opportunities that lie in the telecom market seem endless and the growing demand for mobile telephony systems is creating a world-wide market. The telecom industry is nowadays not only by means of millions, but by means of billions. Actors in this industry are seeking the most profitable markets throughout the world. In this assignment we will discuss about the mobile telecom market situation and their competitive analysis.

ABOUT BANGLADESH

Bangladesh is one of the poorest, most densely populated, least developed countries in the world. Apart from its lowly economic status, major impediments to growth have included frequent cyclones and floods and the slow implementation of much-needed economic reforms. The country has a reputation for the inefficiency of its state-owned enterprises. This report looks at the country’s surprisingly energetic telecoms sector, in particular, the effort that has been going into building telecom infrastructure and the progress that has been made on regulatory reforms. Some key measures of the status of telecommunications in Bangladesh are also provided.

Population:

By July 2008, the total population of Bangladesh is going to be 153,546,901 with a growth rate 2.022%. In July 2007 the growth rate was 2.056%. (CIA World Fact Book 2008)

Age structure is 0-14 years: 33.1% (male 25,639,640/female 24,174,937), 15-64 years: 63.4% (male 48,659,087/female 46,712,687), 65 years and over:3.5% (male 2,818,638/female 2,443,350) (2007 EST.). Median age of the population is 22.5 years. (ibid)

Communication systems

Communication in Bangladesh is based on Telephone, mobile communication, TV Broadcast, Radio, Internet etc. Three types of radio broadcast stations; AM15, FM 13 and shortwave 2. There are 376 Internet hosts with 10 ISP’s and 450,000 internet users as of the year 2006. Telephone density is less than 1 per 100 persons. Mobile cellular density is 13 per 100 per person. The country is introducing digital systems, trunk systems which include VHF and UHF microwave radio links and some fiber optic links. The country has a link to Europe with SEA-ME-WE-4 fiber optic submarine cable. (CIA World Fact Book 2008)

METHODOLOGY

We have conducted the literature search connected to the topic to support and direct the research. This search was mainly conducting on the University databases, Journal databases, Library Journals, websites and Textbooks.

Telecom Infrastructure in Bangladesh

Many foreign investors are now interested to do business in telecom sector in Bangladesh which reveals that Bangladesh has become a significant hub for telecoms. It has been forecasted that the average revenue from telecoms sector will be Tk1500crore2 a year. Bangladesh is a country which is densely populated and also is a flat and easily extends able coverage. The infrastructure and Tele-density is low which on the other hand made the market a perfect place for telecom business. The demand is very high and the consumer base is very large but the investment is low because of the topographic layout. The government has a receptive foreign investment policy with no restrictions on repatriation of profit. Even though the current infrastructure is not much developed but it is suitable for foreign investment.

Bangladesh has a huge potential in WiMax and submarine cable which is a new technology in the country and has attracted the foreign telecom operators. Many foreign telecom operators are coming to Bangladesh to explore the potentiality of the technology. Some interested international telecom operators who want to start a business in Bangladesh are UK-based Orange Telecom, South Korean SK Telecom and UAE’s Etisalat.

The government is encouraging private sector to invest more in the industry as they think that the industry is playing a vital role in developing the socioeconomic structure of the country. And to ensure that, the government has taken several attempt. Giving private sector the license for fixed line telephone is one of those attempts. Due to the environmental facts, the foreign entrants should adjust their equipments according to demand of the environment

TREND IN TELECOM MARKET IN BANGLADESH

BIS Shrapnel, has launched its Bangladesh Mobile Telecommunication, 2005 report. Report author Mr Priyam Shah explains that Bangladesh’s mobile phone market has achieved exceptional growth since the beginning of 2004, registering a massive 100% growth in its subscriber base during 2004, and 137% during 2005. This trend is forecast to continue over the coming years, bringing the subscriber base to 58.2 million by 2010.

According to Mr Shah, recent growth in the Bangladesh mobile market can be attributed to factors such as the deregulation of the telecommunication sector, low levels of tele-density, inadequate fixed phone infrastructure, high competition following the entry of two new operators (Banglalink and Teletalk) and, particularly, massive foreign direct investment (FDI) by telecom giants like Telenor, Telekom Malaysia (TM), Orascom, SingTel, and most recently by UAE-based Warid Telecom. Mr Shah explains that foreign operators, in collaboration with local partners, have been working with the infrastructure to remove entry barriers and make mobile telephony more affordable and widen the base of mobile subscribers.

Mobile Price War

According to Mr Shah, the entry of Banglalink in February 2005 has sparked a price war. Banglalink’s attractive launch offer included a new connection and handset at a low start-up cost of US$51. Following Banglalink, three other private operators – Grameen Phone, Aktel and CityCell – have also come up with various value-added offers resulting in an intense price battle.

The development of a competitive mobile phone market is expected to prompt an easing in cellphone tariffs going forward, after years of escalation in what was a captive market. Consumers will also benefit from cheaper connection and call rates.

State-owned operator Teletalk, however, is expected to struggle in this new environment as it is still grappling with poor network coverage and inefficient management.

New SIM Tax

Controversially, the country’s 2004/05 annual budget (delivered in June 2005) imposed a tax of US$18 on each new SIM card connection, raising a huge furore among cellphone operators. Operators think that the new tax will pose a serious entry hurdle for low-income earners and will significantly stifle growth expectations.

According to the latest figures from BIS Shrapnel research, the sale of mobile phone connections has picked up after an initial slowdown in June and July 2006. The tax on SIM cards was revised to US$13.50 in August in response to fierce demands from operators

Mobile Handset Market

In tandem with the growing subscriber base, sales of mobile handsets has increased at a phenomenal pace. However, nearly 70% of mobile handsets available in the local market have been entering through informal channels, depriving the Government and importers of a huge amount of revenue each year. In a serious bid to turn around this drastic situation, the Bangladesh Government reduced the tax on mobile handset imports from US$22.50 to only US$4.50 in mid 2005. Mr Shah explains that although this initiative has revived the situation to a certain extent, the effect on the grey market has not been as significant as was expected by distributors and importers.

Interviews conducted by BIS Shrapnel with leading distributors reveal that the grey market is currently holding around 40% market share, but they are hopeful this will diminish over the coming months.

According to BIS Shrapnel research, Bangladesh’s mobile handset market is dominated by first-time users (nearly 85%), as the country is still in its infancy in terms of mobile phone usage. Further, 80% of the handset market is dominated by ultra-low to low-end handsets, available for less than US$68, due to the country’s low per capita income levels.

As with many other Asia-Pacific countries, the Bangladesh mobile handset market is predominantly captured by global handset giant Nokia (approximately 52% market share) followed by Siemens.

Mr Shah explains that the success of these two vendors can be attributed to excellent handset quality, ease of use, an efficient sales and distribution network, dedicated after-sales service, and regular launches of low-priced handsets to meet market demand.

The Mobile World Statistics

According to The Mobile World, at the end of Q3 2005, the country’s penetration has just nudged over 5% – with 7.3 million customers. Grameen Phone is the market leader with 4.2 million customers. Number two in the market is Aktell (Telekom Malaysia) with just over 2 million customers. Sheba Telecom has just over 600,000 customers while Pacific Bangladesh Telecom has just over 300,000 customers and Teletalk Bangladesh picks up the tail with 120,000 customers. Warid Telecom had not reported figures at the time.”

Grameenphone is a GSM (global system of mobile communication)-based cellular operator in Bangladesh. It has started operations on March 26, 1997. It is partly owned by Telenor (62%) and Grameen Telecom (38%). Grameenphone is the largest mobile phone company in Bangladesh with 23.04 million customers as of october, 2008. It is also one the fastest growing cellular telephone network in Bangladesh. At the end of 2008, it had about 5200 BTS (Base Tower Stations) around the country. Grameenphone’s stated goal is to provide cost-effective and quality cellular services in Bangladesh. On the 16th of November, 2006 GP formally changed its logo to match its parent company Telenor’s logo. According to GP the new logo symbolizes trust, reliability, quality and constant progress. Grameenphone has already picked up 425 core taka of Non-convertible Senior Coupon Biasing Bond @ interest rate of 14.5 by the help of ten financial group of the companies. The company is recently going to call for IPO (Initial Public Offering) to collect capital from share market of the country of 6 core 50 lakh dollar (449 core taka). GP has submitted the prospectus of proposal for IPO in 12/12/2008 to the chairman of SEC (Security and Exchange Commission). The name of present CEO of GrameenPhone is Odver Heszedal.

The name Grameenphone was kept as part of the new identity because the name Grameenphone carries with it all of the heritage, success and values of the companies past, added the then CEO of Grameenphone Erik Aas.

Hawaii, and Ericsson provides technological support to GrameenPhone. The tower range of GP exists 5-7 km. The technology used by Grameenphone is 1G (First Generation) which is supportable to 2G (Second Generation).

Banglalink

With a slogan of “making it difference”- banglalink started operations in February 2005. Previously, it was known as Sheba Telecom Pvt. Ltd that had been providing GSM (global system of mobile communication) services in Bangladesh since 1998. Orascom Telecom bought 100% share of Sheba Telecom in 2004 and gave its new name as banglalink.

banglalink, is the second largest cellular service provider in Bangladesh. As of August, 2008, banglalink has a subscriber base of more than 10 million. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Orascom Telecom. banglalink had 1.03 million connections until December, 2005. The number of banglalink users increased by more than 253 per cent and stood at 3.64 million at the end of 2006, making it the fastest growing operator in the world of that year. In August, 2006, banglalink became the first company to provide free incoming calls from BTTB for both postpaid and prepaid connections. banglalink provides its powerful network by 5500(approx) BTS (Base Tower Stations) is covering 486 Thanas reasonably and 61 districts, covering a total population of around 90% till mid of 2008. After Govt. withdrawal of the restriction of planting network infrastructure from the three hilly districts (i.e. Banderbarban, Kagrachori & Rangamati) banglalink covered the 64 districts within very short time. The name of present CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of banglalink is Ahmed Abu Domer.

The logo of the company is designed on keeping the national animal i.e. Royal Bangle Tiger in mind, which symbolize to the faster growth. During the 3^rd quartile of this year which means july-september, 2008 the company earned 524 core BDT. And the companies market expanded to 10.17 million customers. AKTEL

Telekom Malaysia International Bangladesh (TMIB) Limited is a joint venture between Telekom Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (70%) and NTT DoCoMo (30%).

Aktel is the third largest mobile phone operator in Bangladesh in terms of revenue and subscribers (8.14 million as of August 2008). In early 2008 Aktel slipped from the second position to the third after facing fierce competition from banglalink.

AKTEL launched its operations on the 15 November, 1997 in Dhaka and on 26 March, 1998 in Chittagong. Its founding chairman is Late Mr. Zahiruddin Khan, an ex-commerce minister. AKTEL was formed as a joint-venture between Telekom Malaysia and A.K. Khan Company. All along through its insception it was ranked as No.2 mobile operator and was placed far behind the industry leader GrameenPhone in terms of revenue and no. of subscribers. AKTEL started investing heavily with funds from Telekom Malaysia (the majority stake owner) on expanding its network in 2001 but the investment was far too inadequate in comparison with GrameenPhone’s investment.

Aktel offers an array of different packages. In addition to offering the fundamental pre-paid and post-paid mobile services, it offers a wide range of value added products and services such as, SMS, GPRS, mobile data services, infotainment services, SMS banking, Caller Ring Back Tone, Ringtones download, Picture Messaging, MMS, Voice Greetings, Call Blocking on 4th August 2008, which give subscriber to control which call he or she receive or not and Bengali SMS.

CITYCELL

Citycell (Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited) is the first mobile communications company of Bangladesh. It is the only CDMA (Code division multiple access) network operator in the country. As of 1st March, 2008, Citycell’s total mobile subscriber base is 1.56 million, up 137 per cent or 680,000 from two years ago, giving it the best growth rate of the company till date. Citycell is currently owned by Singtel with 45% stake and the rest 55% owned by Pacific Group and Far East Telecom.

In 1989 Bangladesh Telecom Limited (BTL) was awarded a license to operate cellular, paging, and other wireless communication networks. Then in 1990 Hutchison Bangladesh Telecom Limited (HBTL) was incorporated in Bangladesh as a joint venture between BTL and Hutchison Telecommunications (Bangladesh) Limited. HBTL began commercial operation in Dhaka using the AMPS mobile technology in 1993 and became the 1st cellular operator in South Asia[2]. Later that year Pacific Motors bought 50% of BTL. By 1996 HBTL was renamed as Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Limited (PBTL) and launched the brand name “Citycell Digital” to market its cellular products. Michel Seymour is the present CEO of Citycell

Hawaii, Ericsson & Motorola provides technological support to Citycell. The tower range of Citycell exists to 5-6 km. in case sometime it varies to about 9 km.(Max.) The technology used by Citycell is CDMA1X(Code division multiple access). Citycell is consolidating its position in wireless data by launching their Zoom EV-DO (evaluation data optimize) for the broadband wireless internet service.

Although CDMA1X technology is the latest technology citycell could not not flourishing the companies market position although it was the first company to launch Mobile cellular phones. Executive opinion abut this is that the failure of the policy maker to take right decision in right time is the main cause . But he also appreciated the policies of present CEO of citycell for capturing the market position. He also thinks that the countries most Mobile companies are GSM, so they may induce the GSM union to capture the market.

Products Offered

Citycell offers prepaid, postpaid and fixed phone plans. Since Citycell operates in CDMA, RIM’s are usually sold with a phone mostly cheap Chinese sets produced by ZTE, Huawei, Samsung, Motorola and Alcatel. Citycell currently has the cheapest phone+connection tariff at 1399 taka.

WARID

Warid Telecom International Ltd. is a GSM-based cellular operator in Bangladesh. Warid is the sixth mobile phone carrier to enter the Bangladesh market. It is currently struggling but is trying to find a way out.

Warid officially launched their commercial services in Bangladesh on the May 10, 2007 with a GSM Mobile Cellular network covering 64 districts of the country and encompassing 70% of the mobile phone using population- the single largest launch the country has ever seen.

In December 2005, Warid Telecom International LLC paid $50 million dollars(US) to obtain a GSM license from the BTRC and became the sixth mobile phone operator in Bangladesh.

In a press conference on August 17, 2006, Warid announced that his network would be activated two months ahead of schedule, in October, 2006. Again in October, 2006 Warid Telecom put off the launch of its cellphone services in Bangladesh until April, 2007 after its major supplier Nokia walked out on an agreement over a payment dispute. The present CEO of WARID Mr. Munir Farooqui.

Products Offered

Warid provides both post-paid and pre-paid connection plans. The post-paid plan is branded and marketed across the country under the name Zahi Post-paid, which means leader or royalty. The pre-paid segment is branded and marketed as Zem Pre-Paid.

Customer Care Centers and Franchises

Warid has ten customer care centers around the country located at key locations. These centers are directly run by Warid itself. Warid has another 120 franchises spread across Bangladesh, the largest chain of retail outlets in the country, which is further backed up by a chain of sub-franchises, affinity partners & distributors.

SIM Cards, Scratch Cards and sometimes mobile sets are sold at these outlets. Bill collection for post paid users and Zem top up for pre-paid users can also be availed at the franchises. These franchises directly appoint dealers and sub-dealers in their designated areas.

v Forecast about telecommunication market in Bangladesh:

IEMR’s Mobile Forecast on Bangladesh provides over 65 operational and financial metrics for the Bangladesh wireless market. We cover quarterly historical data starting in 1Q2004 and ending in 1Q2008. We also provide four-year forecasts at the operator level going out to 2010. Operators covered for Bangladesh include: Bangalink/Sheba (Orascom Tel), GrameenPhone (Telenor), TM Int’l (Telekom Malaysia), PBTL (SingTel), and Warid BTTB. Our Mobile Forecasts are updated quarterly and are available for one-time delivery or through regular updates. Notable highlights of the 3Q08 Bangladesh Mobile Forecast include:

1) Total subscribers in Bangladesh will increase from the projected 46.9 million in 2008 to 58.2 million in 2010. We, therefore, forecast that the level of wireless penetration will increase steadily in Bangladesh from our projected 29.0% in 2008 to 34.7% in 2010.

2) The level of competition in the wireless market will continue to increase, and the HHI index will go down from 0.298 in 2008 to 0.285 in 2010. The three largest operators in the country (Bangalink/Sheba, GrameenPhone, and TM International) will be losing market shares to Warid.

3) The largest operator in the country will continue to be GrameenPhone (Telenor), but its market share (by subscribers) will decrease from 45.0% to 42.9% in the forecast period, 2008 ? 2010.

In the figure below BMI (business monitor international) had forecasted a rapid growth and average y-o-y growth of 56% per year between year 2007 and 2011.

Market penetration should be reached by 50% by the end of 2009 and can be increased by 75% during the forecasted period. So, according to the forecast, by the year 2011, mobile subscribers will be 115millions. That sounds like a great potential market. (ibid)

The reality is close to the forecast. According to BTRC, The total number of Mobile Phone Subscribers has reached 32.33 million at the end of October 2007, when BMI’s expectation was about 35 millions. Mr. Manzurul Alam, Chairman BTRC while answering a question, has given the latest information. As of April 2008, the total number of mobile phone subscribers stands at 40.34 millions. And the average growth rate falls in the range of 1 million subscribers per month.

v Brief about PSTN Operators in Bangladesh:

Beside the six mobile telecommunication companies there are twelve PSTN (public switched telephone network) – companies in Bangladesh. Among these BTTB was only govt. owed company, which has been converted into Public Ltd. Co. in august this year and now it is working as a name BTCL (Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Ltd.). Accept BTCL all other PSTN use wireless system CDMA (Code division multiple access) technology. The raise of private PSTN companies made the market of PSTN in the country very competitive. Now the call rate of PSTN has been reduced than the previous rate.

v CONCLUSION

The buyer is powerful in the industry, but since the market is growing largely, it will be easy for the company to hold its own share, because of poverty, the population will be unlikely to avail the switching cost. And this also reduces the risk of high availability of substitutes.

The supplier is not powerful in this case which is a plus for the company and the company can play with the price to keep the production cost low. Since the market is yet to be matured and growing very fast, we assume that the suppliers companies are also increasing. Some multinational companies are showing their interest to enter into the market. This can lead some new suppliers to arrive into the market and make the environment more competitive. So at some stage the bargaining power of the suppliers will become very low.

So from the above discussion, it can be said that the Bangladesh telecom market has a lot of potential to offer considering strategically ignorable or somehow alterable threats. The market looks very potential and prospective. Lots of opportunities are waiting.

Bangladesh has cheap skilled and willing to be skilled labor. Communication infrastructure is in good condition and has the ability to serve the international entrants. Customer demand for telecom product is very high due to the high growth rate of the market. As the industry is becoming bigger, availability of supporting industries are increasing and already there are lots of supporting companies in the market. And finally the government policies are very welcoming and liberal.

From the above discussion we can comment that the mobile telecommunication of Bangladesh is very competitive & the rivals are facing huge competition in the market. Therefore we observe that the mobile companies are changing their strategies day to day to survive in the market. So it will be difficult for any new company to enter in this market. But we can simply say that the mobile telecom market of Bangladesh is a well balanced & fully competitive.
