Toyota has been developing a series of safety systems. Innovations include The Drowsy Drive Warning System, which prevents drivers falling asleep at the wheel, and the Automatic Collision Reduction Braking Systems, which uses a CCD camera and radar to measure the distance of an obstacle ahead and warn of impending collisions.

design a new windscreen

Pilkington of Lancashire, UK, is creating virtual views of a variety of new windscreen shapes and curves through computer simulation. The radical 3-D technology developed by Walt Disney for the film Toy Story gives researchers an idea of what drivers see through the glass, enabling them to design safe an comfortable windscreens.

Trials are set to begin in the USA on the Automatic Highway System (AHS) in 2002. Three basic concepts, hands free technology, road tracking systems and vehicle automation highway, work together to forma fully functioning automated highway. At Demo 97 an event organized by the National Highway Systems, a radar system, cockpit display, acceleration sensors and vehicle to roadside communication systems.

· Mitsubishi HSR-VI concept

The HSR (Highly Sophisticated Research) V1 was Mitsubishi’s concept car at the 1997 Tokyo Car Show. The car uses computer technology to drive itself, but should a human wish to drive itself, but should a human wish to drive, a steering wheel concealed in the dashboard slides out. Instead of an ignition key, the car will read a personal identity medallion.

· Chrysler’s edge Car includes

a holographic display

The Edge Car was a prototype car built by Chrysler in 1996. It was equipped with a holographic display, a computer that display data on journey time and fuel consumption as well as showing what is playing on the compact laser disc player.
