Thanksgiving Day Parade Makeup

Before the turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and football games, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade marches down the streets of New York City with colorful character balloons, marching bands, entertainment personalities, dancers, clowns, Broadway Shows, floats and of course Santa Claus. Most American households have the parade on their television and for those lucky enough to be in the New York City area seeing the parade live is the treat of a lifetime. Mehron has a special affinity to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade not only because Mehron was founded only three years after the Macy's Day Parade was moved to New York in 1924, but also because Mehron has been providing the Thanksgiving Day Makeup for the parade for years.

In 1927 when the first parade balloon, Felix the Cat, was introduced in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a young makeup entrepreneur was producing Performance Makeup by hand in a loft not far from Macy's New York Store. For a young man producing clown makeup and performance makeup, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was more than a colorful spectacle; it was a chance to see his Clown Makeup in action. NY1 is a local cable Network that serves New York City, the City where Mehron Makeup was founded. Rachael Ray, born in Glens Falls, NY August 25, 1968, currently hosts a New York City based show that is syndicated around the world. A co-production of Rachael Ray and Oprah Winfrey, The Rachael Ray Show currently draws 2.6 million daily viewers in America, making it one of the most widely viewed daytime shows. The path that Ms. Ray took to becoming one of the most watched Television Personalities has taken many turns, all involving food. Growing up in a family that owned and managed restaurants it is easy to see how Rachael became attracted to food preparation. Halloween is a continuation of centuries old traditions. Historians point to various ancient festivals honoring the gods, celebrating the harvest, honoring the dead, praying for the souls of the departed and the last day for fun and mischief before settling in for a long cold winter. Whether you want to believe that we can trace the roots of Halloween back to the Roman Goddess Pomona, the Roman Festival of Parentalia, or the the 8th Century Medieval Festival of Samhain, we know that written documentation of Halloween can be found in the works of William Shakespeare which dates Halloween at a minimum to of 1593. The similarities of Halloween and the Galectic Harvest Festival Samhain are hard to discount, even the dates coincide with Halloween. The Galectic Harvest Festival Samhain was held on October 31-November 1 and incorporated rituals associated with the Day of The Dead.

It is obvious that the traditions that have evolved in celebration of Halloween have continued to expand throughout cultures and time, taking from the past and adding in the present. Putting on disguises and trick or treating is very similar to the practice of souling in the Middle Ages, a practice that saw the poor going door to door and recieving food in exchange for prayers for the dead, which occurred on Hallowmas, November 1st. The earliest know in print usage of the term "trick-or-treat' was in the Hamlet of Blackie, Alberta, Canada in their local paper in 1927.

Halloween is a continuation of the festivals, cultures and traditions of centuries of human existence and may even some day be traced back further. In New York City 1927, The Holland Tunnel opened allowing automobile traffic to drive under the bedrock of the Hudson River, linking New York and New Jersey via roadbed. Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic from New York to Paris. A man named Babe Ruth moved from Boston to New York to work on Murders Row for the New York Yankees. The Jazz Singer was being hailed as the birth of the talkies. On the 1927 Streets of New York City, the Flappers were the rage, as another man, Mehron Melik, was hand making makeup for the Performers of the Stage and Studio under the name of Mehron Makeup.

In Mexico 1927 there was a counter-revolution against the government in a revolt that became knows as The Cristero War. In Mexico City, the first experimental theater, Teatro Ulses, literally the Odysseus Theater, a fifty seat theater which had a short life, laid the foundation for the future of Mexican Theater. The Silent Film that was breaking barriers in Mexico in 1927 was El puño de hierro (The Iron Fist), a startling look at drug addiction and trafficking told by blending social commentary with adventure and surrealism. The rise of the Performing Arts in Mexico coincided with the rise of the world's most famous Theater District, Broadway, in New York City, where Mehron Makeup was gaining a following among the Performers of Studio and Stage.
