Friend Ships Makes A World Of Difference

When we received an email from Friend Ships to assist them with their face painting and clown makeup needs our team jumped right in. Friend Ships (a.k.a. Park West Children's Fund, Inc.) is a nonprofit, humanitarian aid relief agency. They collect corporate and private donations of food, clothing, medical equipment and other much needed items and distribute them to those in need free of charge - domestically and internationally. But their support goes beyond the tangible. Friend Ships is also committed to putting smiles on the faces of children hurt and/or scared by disasters through fun-filled events. We are so moved and humbled by how their work positively impacts countless lives across the globe. This amazing organization has delivered relief throughout the United States and to over forty countries worldwide since it was founded in 1983.

Some of the impact Friend Ships Has Made
Last fall, Friend Ships was the leading disaster relief organization in response to needed aid in Jean Lafitte, Louisiana after Hurricane Isaac. They established their outdoor Garden Cafe for three weeks, which served hot food to hundreds of people each day and provided a safe place for victims to relax. Friend Ships Sea Haws also worked alongside the National Guard distributing items and gutting damaged homes. The agency's fall hurricane relief continued after Hurricane Sandy. They shipped heavy-duty tarp to Jamaica and provided meal service to residents of the severely damaged Far Rockaway, Queens, New York - including a Thanksgiving feast and door-to-door meal deliveries.

Just last week Friend Ships helped lift the spirits of residents in the McMillan Park section of Lake Charles, Louisiana after the area was devastated by a triple homicide. They created an afternoon of fun for neighborhood children with a hot dog cart, cupcakes, homemade cookies, clowns on stilts, face painters, bucket drummers and balloon animals. Wow! Our two days at The Makeup Show Chicago were jam packed with fun and excitement. All of the wonderful customers, the incredible guests, the non-stop demos, and the packed seminars kept us busy from morning 'til night! Here are some of the highlights:

The Customers - We LOVED doing this show for YOU. A big shout out to all the loyal Mehron clients and to the new clients we met. The Mehron team so looks forward to this show where we can share our tried and trues, introduce our debuts, and demonstrate to you in person just how they really LOOK, FEEL, and WORK. We enjoyed meeting everyone who stopped by our booth to learn more and see the amazing artistry of Jinny and our special guest on the Mehron Stage.

The Debuts - Some new products took center stage at our booth. For a night out on the town hitting the hottest clubs we have our B.L.A.M.E. Black Light Activated Makeup Essential cream makeup. The Guests - We were thrilled to have Chicago's very own Leekovision working with us on the Mehron Stage demonstrating our top selling Paradise Makeup AQ, which was developed together with Jinny, and our LUX Airbrush Makeup. The team had a blast creating alongside him. We also got to meet Face Off Season 4 winner Anthony Kosar. This Chicago native has a makeup school where he teaches special effects makeup and face painting classes using Mehron's Paradise Makeup AQ products.

The Seminars - With the summer bridal season in full swing, professional makeup artist and model Sindy Perez taught the Mehron seminar HD Makeup For The Modern Bride. People filed in to learn how to make their bridal clients look even more fantastic under the scrutiny of high definition.

We are not trying to rush the summer, but when we saw these fabulous creations from Andreea Carstea we couldn't help but share her special effects and character makeup ideas for Halloween - or really any time of year. After all, character makeup is not simply for the trick or treat season. Just turn on your television, go see a movie or take in a stage production and you are sure to find some amazing makeup artistry. But it's not only the entertainment industry that seems to be turning to special FX and character makeup apart from the holiday. The extremely popular AMC show The Walking Dead has created a cult following, and die hard fans are throwing come in costume zombie parties. Cosplayers, people who dress up to represent a fictional character in either game play or at conventions, also rely on special FX and character makeup - think Treckies. Andreea: Since I finished makeup school a year ago, I have worked in all types of makeup artistry; however, I especially love special FX makeup.

FABAIC 2013 Ft. Lauderdale

We just had a fabulous five days at the Face And Body Art International Convention (FABAIC) 2013 down in Ft. Lauderdale. FABAIC is the largest industry event of its kind in the world. It brought together the most famous instructors from across the globe - two being our very own Jinny and Mark Reid. Attendees were surrounded with boundless opportunities to hone their skills and learn new techniques from the best of the best. There were classes, seminars and nightly jam sessions. Jinny taught Art Celebrating Life - Belly Painting, Mehron Prisma Cake Magic, Eye See You - the Art of Painting Eyes, Floral Fantasy, and Painted Tattoo Sleeves. Mark shared his talents in Fashionista Body Art, Wings n Roses Body Art, Million Dollar Legs, Boys Will Be Boys, Fantasy Cats, and a young adult class on scary faces. But these packed classes were not the only place people could learn from the masters. When they weren't teaching, Mark and Jinny were drawing in the crowds for their demos on the Mehron Stage. Here is a peek of their amazing artistry that had everyone stopping, watching and learning.

FABAIC Evening Vendor Marketplace

Each evening of FABAIC was bustling with happy shoppers looking for the perfect products to replicate what they learned earlier that day. We loved seeing old faces from the industry and meeting so many new artists and helping them fill their Mehron shopping lists! Our new Paradise Makeup AQ Brilliant colors seemed to be the big hit. People were buying up our Paradise Makeup AQ 8 Color Brilliant Palette and bought every single one of our Brilliant Silver. They must have been inspired by Jinny's glimmering creations.

FABIAC Inspires Even The Tiniest Of Artists

FABAIC offers classes for children and young adults. Mehron was happy to sponsor these fun filled, hands on classes that inspire and motivate budding face and body artists! Each young student received and adorable sugar skulls t-shirt that was designed by Jinny to follow the opening convention day theme and a bag full of face painting products and tools for the classes. The kids had such a blast!

These Special Effects Makeup Artists' Accolades

Facades FX has won the 2013 Platinum Remi for Best Makeup and Special Effects Design for their work on the horror short Legend of Goatman at the 46th Annual Worldfest-Houston International Film Festival where they used Mehron's Fantasy F-X Makeup, Mask Cover, and Stage Blood. They also received the 2011 Gold Remi for Best Special Effects Makeup for Renfield: The Undead.

Recently Phil directed and did creature effects for a stage production of Frankenstein, that he hopes to make into a feature film. Below is a video of those fabulous effects, where Mehron's products were his foundation for the creature's effects. He used Mask Cover for the prosthetics and Fantasy F-X Makeup for the body paint for the creature. Tooth F-X Special Effects Tooth Paint, Fantasy F-X, and intense Color Cups were used on the other characters in the production as well.

Love the makeup look of Bravo's Real Housewives of New York City's Aviva Drescher? We've got the scoop on how you can replicate it with the makeup products she relies on both on and off-screen - Mehron. Bottomless Closet in NYC

Celebrity makeup artist Dani Fonseca, an integral part of the Mehron family, inspires imaginative creations through her makeup artistry, demonstrations and seminars. Just recently Dani and her 2012 The Body of Art interns inspired us in another way. These astounding interns decided they wanted to give back by creating an event where they could support others in need by using their makeup talents. They chose to donate their services to Bottomless Closet in NYC. This fabulous organization is committed to boosting women's self-esteem and self-confidence so they can enter and succeed in the workforce and improve the quality of their lives. Some of the women the organization aids struggle with poverty, homelessness, abuse, and even incarceration. As highlighted on last Friday's Good Day New York, Bottomless Closet helps them achieve success through a women helping women program that includes providing business attire, interview preparation, professional development, financial management and personal enrichment.
Enhancing The Positive Self-Image of the Women of Bottomless Closet NYC Through Makeup
Building upon the women helping women concept, Dani's interns conceived an event where they could show the women of Bottomless Closet NYC how to create an easy, clean, appropriate interview makeup look. When we learned of this wonderful event, we wanted to lend our support to these well-deserving women by donating Mehron products.

"The ladies were so thrilled. I overheard one woman say she lost her home AND her job from Hurricane Sandy and was feeling really down. We had a fabulous wrap up to the spring makeup trade shows this past weekend at The Makeup Show New York 2013. The Metropolitan Pavilion was hopping with beauty industry professionals. Code Purple NYC Fashion Show

Last Thursday was World Malaria Day. To help raise awareness about this horrific disease, Mehron teamed up with NYC makeup artist Dani Fonseca as the makeup sponsor at the CODE PURPLE NYC Fashion Show. Malaria, which can be fatal, is spread when mosquitoes that have been infected by a parasite feed on humans. 85% of the malaria cases and 90% of malaria deaths occur in poverty stricken Africa. 85% of the fatal victims of malaria are children under five. Perhaps the most shocking statistic - every 30 seconds a child dies from malaria! We are so humbled and honored to have been part of this important event to help change these statistics and save lives. Below are some highlights from the evening.

The evening of fashion, film and socializing had one goal: to move people to action. CODE PURPLE is a non-profit organization that brings together world-renowned designers, fashion moguls, celebrities and models to protect innocent people from contracting malaria through fashion. Each guest's minimal $20 door donation allowed a Moskeeto Armor Hood-e to be sent to Africa. This incredibly protective garment, which was designed and developed by ING Activewear, repels mosquitoes and other insects known to carry not only malaria, but also dengue fever, West Nile and lyme disease.

ING's Robin Crespo is the founder of CODE PURPLE, "We joined the fight against malaria in 2012 and have enjoyed watching people and businesses alike stand with us as we work to defeat this deadly disease," said Robin. "We took a break this year from hosting our annual February fashion show to wait until this day to help connect the dots for our supporters as to why we do what we do."

International Beauty Show New York 2013

This was our first time at the International Beauty Show in New York and we had a blast! The place was packed with pros hungry for the latest products, techniques and tips. Our booth was constantly bustling with visitors interested in trying things out and watching Jinny and Dani Fonseca work their artistic magic on the Mehron Stage.

Big beauty took on the Big Apple this past weekend at another fabulous IMATS. Crowds of makeup artists and beauty enthusiasts converged on Pier 94 in New York City for one of the makeup industry's largest shows. The show was SOLD OUT both days! The International Makeup Artist Trade Show, which is produced by top trade publication Make-Up Artist magazine, was - as always - a top notch production. Kudos to the IMATS team led by Make-Up Artist publisher and editor-in-chief Michael Key pictured above - who just happened to stop by the Mehron booth for a quick pic.

Not only did the crowds come to Pier 94, they also made their way to Booth 616! And boy did we keep them entertained with hands-on product displays and amazing body painting demos by Jinny and Dani Fonseca.

The Demos at IMATS NY 2013

We LOVE when our Facebook friends posts pics of their fabulous creations. This week our team was so taken by the work and story of Alexys Cheyenne Fleming that we just HAD to share it. Her amazing artistic expression was inspired by the Keres, which were the female spirits of violent and cruel death caused by battle, accident, murder or ravaging disease. Alexys' design definitely brings that definition to life! Just look at the eyes, the detail on the chest and those fingers!

Alexys is a self-taught makeup artist, licensed esthetician, and licensed cosmetologist. She began getting into makeup around the age of 14. "It's actually funny because before that age, I did not like makeup at all and refused to even attempt to wear it," says Alexys. "It wasn't until I realized that makeup expanded past the regular mascara application that I started to use makeup as an outlet to express my creativity." Diagnosed at the age of 13 as a type 1 diabetic, Alexys struggled - to accept that there was "something wrong with her" and with bullying by schoolmates. "Expressing myself through makeup made everything better almost every day," says Alexys. It was then she decided to become a makeup artist. She plans to continue to inspire and help other people, especially those being bullied. "Bullying is a big issue today," shares Alexys. "And I feel that learning to express yourself through art is one of the best ways to cope."

These stunning representations of the Keres were created entirely out of Mehron's Paradise Makeup AQ line of face and body makeup. "I had been using MAC Chromacakes for a very long time. I purchased Paradise for the first time at the last IMATS show. I fell in love the first time that I used it! I now highly recommend Paradise Makeup AQ to all of my followers on my Facebook page - MadeULook by Lex," says Alexys. "They glide on so smooth and are not streaky AT ALL! I also purchased the brushes and fell in love with them!"

Alexys hopes to inspire people of all ages to let their creations come to life on a walking canvas. We already think she is an inspiration!

It was another busy long weekend for Mehron. We just finished up at the European Face And Body Art Event (EFABE) 2013 in Bussum, The Netherlands. What a fabulous affair. If you are a European face and body artist this was THE place to be. There were workshops and classes taught by renowned international industry professionals including Jinny and Mark Reid, meet and greets, and a spectacular Face Paint Superjam, which showcased some amazing talent. Mehron Europe - our distributor for the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Austria, and Luxembourg - was the sponsor and organizer of EFABE 2013. We want to give a huge shout-out to Saskia Timmermans, of Mehron Europe, for pulling it all together. Mehron knows how many pros rely on our popular Paradise Makeup line, so we worked together with Mehron Europe to make sure it was available for every workshop.

EFABE 2013's Incredible Classes
The classes and workshops at EFABE 2013 were taught by industry powerhouses. And we are thrilled to say two with strong Mehron ties were among them! Jinny, who is known world-wide for her artistry and co-creator of Mehron's Paradise Makeup AQ, taught three hands-on, interactive classes:

Facepaint Class - Jinny shared Quick and WOW techniques to have in your toolbox for when you need some speedy designs to fall back on.
Facepaint with Headpieces - Participants learned how to make a spectacular headpiece that incorporated the head into the face, then practiced on their own models.
Bodypaint Class - What can we say about this class? Jinny is the master and perfect blending is her specialty and everyone got to experience it.

Mark Reid, famous for his realism and fun face designs, and the man behind Mehron's Mark Reid GlitterMark and Signature Brushes, also led three classes:

Jeans Class - Mark shared his secrets to creating a breathtaking pair of 3-D jeans that nobody would guess are painted - including tears, folds and belts!
Facepaint Class Fantastic Eye Designs - Participants learned some fantastic eye designs for boys and girls - from Mardi Gras to butterflies to tigers and his popular Sugar Skulls.
Painting Arms and Legs - Mark taught everything you need to know about partial body painting for that touch of flair.

Zombie Makeup Techniques

I recently went to a zombie themed birthday party for a friend. A present wasn't the only thing I brought. No zombie lover can go anywhere without their zombie makeup! Zombie makeup can really go in a bunch of different directions, but for this particular occasion my friends and I wanted to make it bloody and scary. So I went armed with my giant makeup case full of the perfect Mehron zombie makeup products - Stage Blood Squirt Blood, Blood Capsules, Coagulated Blood Gel, Latex Liquid, ProFACE Setting Powder in White, Paradise Makeup AQ 30 Color Palette, iNtense Pro Pressed Powder Pigments, CHEEK Powder, E.Y.E Liner Pencil, Black Lipstick, Paradise Brushes, Stageline Golden Nylon Makeup Brushes, and Barrier Spray. We had a blast! So I thought I would share some pictures and our . . .

Transformative Zombie Makeup Techniques

Step One. Using the complexion powder brush, dust a nice layer of ProFACE Setting Powder in White all over the face, neck and ears. Once that's on the face and looks nice and washed out, start on the eyes. I applied iNtense Pro Pressed Powder Pigments with a fluffy brush to help blend it out deep underneath the eye and up to the eyebrow. You can get really creative and use any colors. I used Red Earth and Carbon for one look and Mountain Moss, Solar Wind and Carbon for the other. Apply the brighter colors first and blend out in large circular motions. Then pack Carbon onto the lid and directly underneath the eye with the Stageline Sable Brush and blend out again into the bright colors. Line the upper lash line, as well as the lower lash line, with black E.Y.E Liner Pencil and your eyes are done. Quick and simple!

Step Two. Now comes the fun, gory part. Apply Latex Liquid wherever you want to create a wounded, peeling effect. I like to put it onto the skin in layers and in thick coats. As it starts to dry and get a little tacky, you can press your finger down onto it and lift quickly - this helps to tear the latex and create little holes. Do this a couple of times until you are happy with the size and shape it creates. Once it is dry, apply face painting products and blend. I used Paradise Makeup AQ 30 Color Palette so I had a variety of colors to choose from and mix together all right in front of me. I mainly used Red and Beach Berry in the sections where a hole was made in the latex, then applied a little white around the edge of the hole to create highlights and added Black or Storm Cloud in between the holes to create depth. To make the skin look really wounded, dab some Coagulated Blood Gel into the holes. For some added bruising, use a fluffy brush to apply some iNtense Pro Pressed Powder Pigments around the wounds.

Step Three. The BLOOD! Go crazy with it, using different kinds and colors. I used Stage Blood in Dark Venous and Bright Arterial around the mouth and down the chin and neck. Before applying the blood, I used Black Lipstick on the mouth in a very messy way. Apply it over the actual lip line and smear it with a brush. Then apply the blood. The best blood applicator is your fingers! Dab the Stage Blood, which is thicker and stays sticky, around the mouth. There is NO need to be neat here, no zombie ever ate carefully! Dab it onto the upper lip area, chin and even the tip of the nose. You can use either Stage Blood or Squirt Blood down the chin, neck and chest or both. I used Squirt Blood and poured it right down the chin and let it drip all the way down the chest. Smear it with your fingers or a brush to make it even messier. You can also use Stage Blood in the Blood Capsules to bite down on to create this look as well or just to scare people!

Step Four. The final touch, and my personal secret weapon, is to add veins! I think this really makes the skin look infected. Take a very fine detail brush and use either Green or Blue Paradise colors to very lightly apply small, crooked lines along the frame of the face, and add a little coming out from the wounds. If you find the lines are too dark, add more water to the brush. You can also dull out the color by applying more Setting Powder over at the end. This will make the whole look come together. Once you're all done, apply Barrier Spray and get ready to scare!

The Real Housewives of New York City follows the lives of ambitious Manhattan women as they try to juggle careers, motherhood, social events and city life. But let's face it - the show is also about the glam! Last week one of the show's stars, Aviva Drescher, called out to Mehron to do her makeup for CBS's The Couch. New York City born and bred, Aviva knows a little something about fashion and beauty. So we were excited to be part of her look for the show.

Mehron and Aviva first teamed up together at the Malan Breton Fall 2013 Collection show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. So we called out to Jacob Hyzer, a Mehron Makeup Fashion Week Team veteran, for some assistance. Here is cheat sheet of the products and techniques Jacob used for Aviva's appearance on The Couch:

Prep - Before applying makeup, Jacob prepped Aviva's face with Mehron's Soothing Oil-Free Moisturizing Lotion. This fragrance and wax-free moisturizer's vitamin E and aloe vera help restore softness. Then Jacob applied Velvet Finish Primer to create a perfect canvas for the foundation. Its unique blend of vitamins and antioxidants creates the appearance of flawless skin - aloe vera helps soothe, protect, heal and hydrate, and vitamins C and E help increase collagen and decrease the look of fine lines and pigmentation.

Foundation - Two shades of Celebre Pro HD Makeup were used to highlight and contour. Filled with vitamins and antioxidants, this oil and fragrance free makeup delivers satin-smooth, buildable coverage that is not greasy - and holds up fabulously from the runway to HD-TV to everyday. Then Celebre Pro HD Loose Mineral Finishing Powder was applied to set it. This ultra-fine, translucent powder provides the perfect finishing touch.

Eyes - E.Y.E Powder in Natural Wheat was applied to the entire lid, Fawn in the crease, and Black Onyx in the outer corner. These creamy, velvety-smooth matte shadows don't cake or crease so they were perfect for under the intense lights on the set. A Black E.Y.E Liner Pencil was used on the top lash line and inner water line. Mascara and E.Y.E Lashes finished off the look.

Cheeks - Aviva LOVED CHEEK Cream in Tawny Pink. Jacob then set it with a touch of CHEEK Powder in Rose Wood on the apples of the cheeks.

Lips - The lips definitely were the show stopper. For a soft, youthful finish, Jacob applied a mix of L.I.P Cream in Cotton Candy, Bubble Gum Pink and Natural, then topped it off with Natural Glosstone.

Aviva tells us she looked great, felt great, and got great reviews on her Twitter feed, with specific shout outs to the lip color!

We had a FABULOUS time at The Makeup Show LA this past weekend. A big shout out to everyone who came by the Mehron booth to check out our new products and watch Jinny in action, as well as to those who came to Sindy's seminar HD Makeup for the Modern Bride. We always love to see the reactions to our products, demonstrations and helpful hints and were thrilled with all of the positive feedback. And it was so great to meet makeup artist, singer, model and media sensation Jeffree Star and makeup personality Doe Deere.

Sindy's Seminar

HD Makeup for the Modern Bride was definitely one of the highlights of the show. Sindy's engaging and informative seminar was PACKED! She demonstrated fresh makeup techniques that will have today's bride looking amazing from the ceremony to the reception to the photo and video memories she will cherish forever. Hand Painting Animals – As Seen In Rachel Ray Everyday

Body and hand painting animals is extremely popular across many different industries. Body painting is regularly incorporated into costumes – and is sometimes the entire costume, as seen in the picture to the right of world famous body artist, and co-creator of Mehron's Paradise Makeup AQ line, Jinny and her model. Cirque du Soleil wonderfully incorporates face and body painting techniques using Mehron products for its shows. Lately, the amazing hand painting art form has also been garnering much attention through its use in graphic design. AT&T Wireless featured incredible hand painting animal designs in one of its campaigns, as did the World Wildlife Fund.

This month you can see hand painting animals in one of the country's leading lifestyle magazines. Body artist Jenai Chin created unbelievably realistic looking lizard skin for the March issue of Rachel Ray EveryDay. The detail was fantastic! Makeup Colors For Spring 2013

Intense color is where it's at for eyes this spring - particularly shades of blues and greens.

We first saw the makeup trend on the runways of the Spring 2013 collections. Stella McCartney and Kenzo used a thin streak of color at the lash lines. Versus smeared bold sapphire on the base of the lid. Mochino rimmed the upper and lower lashes with bright blue. Dior combined blues and greens with gems for an extreme look, and Fendi lined the lower lashes with intense color blocking. Bright hues on the eyes, on the runways, were definitely hot!

And according to Harper's Bazaar they were not too wild or extreme for everyday wear. Well, maybe Dior is a bit too much for a day at the office, but works as a fun look.

The trend has totally taken off. Flip through the January, February and March editions of the top fashion magazines and you will see color on the eyes popping up everywhere! According to InStyle's January edition, "Whether as a minimal tracing or a lid-to-brow splash, the season's aqua, cobalt, or navy eyes pack a monochromatic punch."
