She looked so chic in her little red jacket, there was a chill in the air, and she choose her black vinyl boots, Her cute leggings were red with red lace inserts. The long sleeve top matched. The jewelry was silver, and her hat was soft white with a little bling. The restaurant was Greek, and in Bingen, Germany on the Rhine River.

This lovely place to eat is now a favorite of Barbie!

There are gardens and fountains just outside the eatery.

There are mountains and vineyards on

the other side of the Rhine River.

And there were people coming from a Medieval Festival too!

Everything was interesting and fun!

It always is in Germany!

The Barbies Are Going to Be Traveling Europe

I have started taking the Barbies with me on our trips out into
Germany sight seeing... They are wonderful ambassadors!

So in that spirit when we rented a little convertible this weekend, and went to Wiesbaden shopping, two of the girls went along. These two dolls represent one of my grand-daughters Gabby, and a beautiful little friend from church whose name is Princess! I think it is just so kool to be named Princess in real life. The real Princess of course is much prettier than my Barbie Doll, so is my grand-daughter Gabby! However the dolls made new friends at the Wiesbaden PX and commissary. It was back to school weekend here Germany, and there was face painting, balloon fun, and all kinds of other booths at the PX. As I said, the girls and I had great fun... even my husband Randy was amused and entertained by the interactions we had!

Boy, riding with the top down makes a mess of your hair!

Face painting was our first stop.

The girls made a pretty new friend!

The balloon sculpture lady was also very friendly!

The Harley bikes caught their eye too!

I am inventorying and making pictures of my Barbie doll collection as we move to Germany, and the collection is extensive. Sometimes work is so much fun! This hobby gives me so much enjoyment, not to mention making me the favorite Nana! In fact it makes friends of every child, or child at heart that I meet. I love sharing my collection with children. So perhaps I will make a friend of you too as I share my work/play!

Now who is this famous Barbie a representation of, certainly she is famous!

Do you recognize Erica Kane from the soap opera All My Children?

I own this doll in several costumes, she is lovely in all of them.

Perhaps you recognize her famous husband?

Frank Sinatra is of course easily recognized, and he came with a devoted fan!

I was lucky and was able to obtain two of these dolls

representing Doris Day, and she is escorted by Mr. Rock Hudson.

This doll is a representation of the famous character Lois Lane, from the movie Superman.

Last but not least, one of a set of characters I know you will immediately recognize. He is a beloved character from the movie The Wizard of Oz!

I will be setting up a little museum in Germany in my home where I can continue our ministry to the children of military families! I am so excited to be making this move, and having the opportunity to recognize the sacrifices and service to out country of the military and their families! Here is a picture of one of my favorite Barbies. She is Mattel's Goddess of the Sun, created by designer Bob Mackie, and one of the favorites of my collection.

Planning Another Little Girl's Birthday Party

Our ranch is a place for children. In planning our aim was to create a place where our grand-children and the children of military families could come and find a place to rest and refresh. There is no better way for children to escape the stresses of life than in play and pretend. Really, that holds true for all of us. We all need play.

From the days of my own childhood came my love for Barbie dolls. I will never forget the first one I ever saw. She was in the basement playroom of my friend Joy Wease, who was the daughter of the pastor of our church. Her Barbie was of the first doll design that Mattel ever made in the "Barbie" series, and had a pony tail, and curly bangs, along with that black and white stripped bathing suit, and black, "high heel" shoes. I immediately fell in love with her, and the very next Christmas, there was one under the tree for me. My Barbie was a brunette, and she had a "bubble cut" hair do. It was love at first sight, and there is no telling how many hours I spent in play with her and the Ken doll which followed on my birthday. My sister received a blond Barbie with that same bubble cut, but ours had red one piece bathing suits. We both dearly loved them, and only had one Barbie apiece in our childhoods. Maybe that is why I have so many today. At any rate, I knew exactly what to add to the ranch for little girls to play with to take them away from all of the cares of their lives, and my Doll Barn was born.

One of the ways that Soldier's Heart Ranch ministers to the families of the military is to provide this place to view and play with dolls of all kinds, even the boys, because they really enjoy playing with the GI Joe collection. I am planning a little birthday party for Samara, the daughter of very good friends, and it is going to feature a fun "scavenger hunt" game. The little girls will have to take their art sheets from room to room in the house, find the Barbies on the page, and get a sticker to add to their art page. Then they will go to the paint table and use markers to color their sheet. Next they will go to another art table and use a glue stick to add some glitter, finishing their art work which they will take home with them them!

There will be many dolls to see and many to play with, wonderful little games to play, and of course play time with the Barbies and other dolls. I know they will have a great time at this special party. I will be posting more pictures of the settings and the fun time we will all have at this beautiful little party. Every Day When I Was a Little Girl I Passed by a House On My Way To School

When I was a little girl, everyday as I walked to school I wanted to go to the door of one of the houses I passed and knock on the door to see if I could come in. The reason I always longed to do that was because the little white house had a little white sign in the window that read "doll hospital." Year after year I walked past, wondering what wonderland lay in that little white house. Then, and I can't even remember why, or what doll my dad decided he would take to the little doll hospital, but he announced on a Sunday afternoon we were going to the doll hospital. Now I had never said a word about wanting to go there, but my dad has always been pretty observant, and very partial to little girls, and we always had everything my dad could afford to give us, and the most important and significant of those things was his time. On Sunday afternoons, even though he didn't have many resources during my childhood, after church, after lunch, and then after his short nap, he nearly always took us on some little field trip. We might go to the school grounds and fly kites, or little airplanes with red wind up propellers, or catch frogs or tadpoles and put then in a jar to take home, go for snow cones, or just a drive in the country. My mom and dad were such sweet parents to us as we were growing up, and they still are. On that one Sunday we took some doll and walked down the street to the house with the "doll hospital" sign. I remember being terribly disappointed. There were no rows of beds with little dolls lying in them, no nurses, and no "doll doctors." It was just a perfectly ordinary living room. The lady living there took the doll from my dad, made it little ticket out, and gave him a receipt. As we walked down the steps my mother said in a cheerful voice to break my silent thoughts, "Well Sam, that was disappointing, let's go get a Dr. Pepper and a candy bar." I have been consoling myself with a Dr. Pepper and candy bar ever since, and I must admit that technique has taken a toll.

When Randy was last home on leave, despite my not wanting to go, (the being on crutches thing was really getting to me,) he insisted that he was taking me on a little get away. We couldn't go far because we both had multiple doctor's appointments. He had picked a little resort on Lake Conroe. Now I am usually gun ho for every trip, but I wasn't feeling well, and I was a little blue. When he started picking out my outfits and putting them in the suitcase, I realized I was going, and put what he had picked back, and got ready. I had so much fun, and on a little trip into Old Spring Town, between Conroe and Houston, my disappointment from that Sunday afternoon so long ago, disappeared as he took me to The Doll Hospital in Old Spring Town. It was everything I had dreamed it would be as a little girl.

Old Spring Town is full of wonderful little shops, bakeries, and restaurants, but of course my favorite was this little shop.

The shop keeper was everything I had envisioned as a child, complete with a traditional lab coat, just like a "real doctor."

Since 1987, Mary Ann Pizzolato has been operating this little shop, and her background in chemical engineering was evident as she talked with a customer who had brought in some vintage dolls for restoration. She had bought them for herself because her own collection had been stolen many years ago. (I am convinced a little girl is in all of us women, and we love dolls until the day we die.) The doll doctor was assuring her customer that she had chemicals to remove stains without damaging the beautiful dolls which were to be left in her care.

Mary Ann is no amateur either, and her reputation has landed the Doll Hospital a feature article in the December 1996 issue of "Good Housekeeping" magazine. Then in 1999 of the November issue of "Parents Magazine, " the Doll Hospital was featured once again. Both the Dallas Morning News, and the Houston Chronicle have done stories on the establishment, and of course little girls for years have made memories in the shop. That isn't the end of their fame, with the Discovery Channel doing a feature piece, and on September 28th of 2000 "The Lynette Jennings Show" showcasing the shop, and the reputation of the business has been established literally around the world. Those of us who collect dolls, and manufacturers alike, share the story of the skills of the Doll Hospital to bring back a dear little friend.

There are white lace curtains, just as I expected, and row after row, and shelf after shelf of dolls. It is too hard to decide which one is prettiest!

Not only can you get your doll repaired, but you can buy

beautiful new dolls, and all kinds of accessories!

If you are in the Houston area, you shouldn't miss the Doll Hospital in Old Spring Town. They are located just about 20 miles from Houston, and less than an hour from our house, if you are staying with us. In fact, there are so many things to do and see in our area, that this story, along with their web site information, will be permanently available on a new page of our site. We will be doing stories on all the intriguing little shops and special places near Soldier's Heart Ranch. There is always something special to do with-in an hour's drive.

You will note the Wicked Witch of the West, but look closer, Glenda the Good Witch

is nearby, no cause for alarm!

Every doll shop must have baby dolls, and of course my favorite one there in the center is the "Army" baby. His shoes were untied, and the good doctor noted that, and stopped to tie them and pose again with the doll.

No doll shop is complete without bride dolls!

Accessories for dressing your dolls are always needed.

There are so many more dolls to see, but you will just have to go and look at all Mary Ann's beautiful dolls, and talk to her of her craft. It was everything I had hoped it would be when my father took me to the Doll Hospital fifty years ago, and it was well worth the wait! Here's where you find the Doll Hospital in Old Spring Town.

Summer is coming to an end at the Doll Barn, so it is time to pack up the summer clothes! The Austin County Rodeo is coming up soon, and all the girls are going to ride in the wagon in the parade. Pictures on October 10th! So I must get outfits ready for each of them... They all want boots...
