The time has come to bid adieu :(

I mentioned several months ago, that some big changes were headed our way. Well, those changes are knocking on our door.

The biggest change is that in just six short weeks, all our earthly possessions will be packed up in a big truck, and our family will be making a cross-country move from California to Virginia. We have never, ever done anything like this before. We were all born here in California, and other than a few short vacations, we’ve never left. We are all silly excited and silly scared all at the same time. The kids are ready for the adventure and looking forward to a new church, a new school, a new house and new friends.

So, it is with bittersweet tears that we say goodbye. You’ve all been such wonderful customers, and, more importantly, friends. We’ve loved getting to know each one of you. We will certainly miss you from this side of the world, but will definitely keep in touch in blogland.

Spring Has Sprung

Here in Northern California, Spring has arrived in full force! The trees are all in full bloom and the flowers are displaying their gorgeous colors. Each morning I awaken to the singing of the birds, welcoming a new day, and at night, the frogs in the pond next door gently usher in my slumber with their evening melody.

The just-right temperatures beckon me to pull out the laptop and work from the patio, after I’ve had my daily dose of allergy relief, of course. If I could move the whole shop outside, I probably would!

I tried to keep this year pretty low key for Christmas quilting. I had three projects that I wanted to do and managed to get them all done with little stress. Isn't it nice when that happens and you can still enjoy making your projects. I quilted an adorable Nancy Halverson wall hanging for my Sister-In-Law. I made a super cute advent calendar for my sister. And lastly, I jumped on the Mug Rug bandwagon and made up 3 for friends. You can read about these projects and more at my blog.

Here are my two recent holiday projects. The wall hanging looks like a poinsettia, and was created from red and light green fabrics. The three little star pillows came from a kit. If I make another snowman pillow, I will make a more pleasant face. This one could scare small children. The sound of the star points' jingle bells made my dog curious, so I tucked the stars high in the tree near the trunk. She's already licked or eaten the stained glass cookies from the tree!

This project has a story behind it. My granddaughter is crazy about the Twilight/Eclipse series. For one of her gifts, we got her a really huge Eclipse poster-very showy and a great gift for her. Enter our 2 young cats (did you know that a 7 month old cat is equal to a 13 year old human--so basically, I have two 13 year old boys running around here-which explains so much about this project!) Anyway, they got into the room and shredded the plastic covering the poster, scratching the poster a bit too. I found this Thursday morning and rushed to the Waco Target (35 miles away) to get another one. Which they didn't have, of course.
So, I found a dinky little one at Walmart and grabbed it, but it wasn't much of a gift. I had this tote bag in my stash, hit a couple of embroidery websites and found the designs I needed. I think she will be very happy with it.

My craft for this year was making napkins for our Christmas dinner. They turned out so cute and were so easy. It’s a 17 inch half circle in a red and green OR like my hubby said green and white would look good too. Sew the two together like a pillow, turn, press open and then topstitch around the edge. Steam press in this tree pattern. Easy Peasy…

This tabletopper is really simple to make. This small tabletopper uses strips of fabrics I had on hand. Finishes about 19" square.

Various 3" strip fabrics

5/8 yd. backing fabric

4-2 1/2" strips for binding

Batting

Instructions:

Cut 41-3" squares light fabric

41 -3" squares dark fabric

Cut each square once on the diagonal. I like to stack a few at a time when cutting on the diagonal so it will go faster. Take one light and one dark triangle, right sides together and sew using 1/4" seam allowance. Do this for all the light and dark triangle pieces. You will have 82 half square triangles. You only need 81.

Sew 9 half square triangles for row one, and each row thereafter for a total of 9 rows. Sew the rows together.

Layer quilt top, batting and backing. Quilt as desired.

Binding: Cut 4 - 2 1/2" strips. Sew the strips together to create one long strip. Press in half wrong sides together. Sew onto quilt edges using your favorite binding method. Hand sew the back of the binding in place or machine stitch, whichever method you prefer.

The quilt was made for a friend of mine during a Secret Santa Stocking Swap. I had made the quilt top last winter but did not get around to quilting it. When I drew my friends name for the swap this year I knew I would finish it and give it to her as a surprise. I mailed it off to her yesterday so she will open it on Saturday!

I also made the stocking for her. It was the only requirement for the swap. I filled it full of surprise goodies just for her!

Hi! I have just finished a gift for my mother-in-law for Christmas. It is a cushion as seen in the picture attached. I printed out their wedding photo from 60 years ago on fabric and stitched it onto the cushion. Then I used lots of lace and trim and beads and sequins and a few heart charms to embellish it. It turned out pretty well but this is the re-do. The first time I did it, I noticed it had gotten dusty from me working on it so I carefully handwashed it only to have the picture disappear! Egad! So, I used a newer sheet of printer fabric and printed it out again. This time I washed it before I sewed it in place and stitched down all the lace! lol

Good morning/afternoon! My apologies for my tardiness … I lost my way wandering around blogland viewing all the amazing posts of everyone’s Christmas. It’s been especially fun seeing all the pictures of the “White Christmas” that the East Coast had. I realize for many, snow is not a big deal, but for little ole’ me here in Central California, it would take a rather major miracle for snow to fall at any time of the year, let alone on Christmas.

Everyone has their dream vacation which usually includes a trip to Hawaii, or somewhere in Europe, maybe an exotic island, but not me. My dream vacation is to be stuck (yes, stuck) with my family in a cabin with big windows in the mountains with the snow falling. Of course, we NEVER lose electricity, and the fire is constantly burning. I have stitching to do, books to read, board games to play, puzzles to assemble …. ahhhh, that’s the perfect vacation. But we can only be stuck for 3 days … 4 days max.

Okay … back to reality. Let’s see if today will bring us a bingo winner!

Where did that person go? I’d really like for her to come back right now. Maybe she’ll be wrapped nicely under my tree and return to me next year.

Yesterday I took a few minutes to gather my fabric and get it cut for Merry Mayhem’s New Year’s Day mystery over at Planet Patchwork. Will you be joining the fun? I hope to see you there! The finished project is a 35” table topper or wall hanging, so it shouldn’t take to long to finish.

Have you ever had one of those mornings when you are so tired that your whole head feels like it’s stuffed with cotton balls?
That’s me … right now.
After working all day, I stayed up way, way, way too late binding a quilt. Our dear Amanda asked me on Thanksgiving day if I could “put together a quick quilt” for a dear friend of hers and her husbands. How could I say no? So, Thanksgiving night I began piecing, finished the next day, mailed it off to my sister-in-law to quilt it and got it back on Sunday. She needs to have it for Thursday night, so last night I figured I better get busy binding it. I wanted to get that done so that if today I get the “oh, by the way … mom, can you make a label too?” … I can do that tonight.

So, today my eyes are crossed and my brain is fuzzy.

I must admit, though, that the quilt did come out beautiful. very simple, but stunning. The fabrics are from Holly Holderman’s (Lakehouse) Tea Time II.

Well, I’m ready to play Bingo! How about you?

Good morning and Happy Friday! I’ll tell you now, this post is late, and it’s not because I haven’t been working on it for the last hour. Let’s just say on the 7th day of Bingo, the casserole dish won. I’ll explain at the end of the post so that you can be safe this baking season!

FRIDAY’S BLOG ROLL…

I’m so happy to hear that everyone is enjoying the blog roll. It’s so fun to visit with our quilting friends all over the world. Lately I’ve been following a whole bunch of crafty, DIY, and home decor blogs. I’m “wowed” everyday!

This Squirrel’s a Quiltin’

Okay, so I know you’re all wondering how the casserole dish won.

Well, Wednesday I had one of "those" days, and by 8 a.m. yesterday morning, I just knew it would be a "rinse and repeat." I've been rushing around trying to get too many things done, like the rest of the world. I was making dinner, went to pull the casserole dish out of the cabinet, and the handle broke in my hand. It's stoneware, and I really didn't want the whole thing coming down on my foot, so I was trying to support the broken handle and the dish with my right hand, while making sure that all the other pieces that were stacked in the dish stayed in the cabinet.

Well, the dish got the better of me and took a nice chunk of skin about 1/8th" x 1/2" off the inside of my palm, right where the thumb rests ... and yes, it's my right hand … and yes, I’m right handed. I'm telling you what, it hurt 100 xs more than when I sliced my finger with the rotary earlier this year. It didn't finally stop bleeding until I went to bed, because, of course, I had a couple of school gifts for to finish for my little guy.

So ... if you have the larger casserole dish in this set, be very careful. It's the Giada deLaurentis bakeware set from Target. Funny thing is, I was already being cautious about it when I started pulling it out, because Wednesday I saw two of them sitting in the clearance rack with broken handles at Target. So, I suppose a nice letter to Giada and to Target are in order. Too bad ... I really love the dish. I'm going to have hubby break off the other handle and sand down the edges. Suppose I’ll need to make a quilted casserole carrier for it … with fabric handles that won’t cut my hand open.

I hope you have a wonderful Friday. Mine will be a little slow going, but things will get done. And if you have an order pending, fear not, my “on-call elves” will be coming in a little later to help get those cut, packed & shipped.

Yikes! It’s Monday morning! Nothing like getting up two hours before the crack of dawn and getting nothing done. I have to play “mommy” here in a few and get my little guy off to school, so we better get busy and give away some goodies and bring on a few new words. Hope everyone has an awesome Monday :)
