Nominees from all 24 public schools came together for recognition from fellow school employees, local officials and school officials.

‘‘Together we share a responsibility to move this school system forward,” said Laurie Haynie, principal of Appeal Elementary School.

Haynie congratulated all of the nominees before speaking of her school’s teacher of the year Jill Floria.

Haynie said each of the nominees inspire students and help them to be able to reach their capabilities and achieve higher levels.

‘‘You inspire all of us,” Haynie said.

Thursday night, 24 teachers were recognized for their dedication to students, parents and all other aspects of the teaching profession.

Principals spoke with ease of their nominees. One teacher, Kimberly Stone, teacher of the year for Huntingtown Elementary School, got great praise from principal Ramona Crowley, and her family. Stone died earlier this year of cancer. According to Crowley, Stone taught right up until the end and even left work early to get chemotherapy only to return and finish out the day.

Crowley described Stone as ‘‘the perfect teacher.”

At the end of the night, Gross, a graduate of Northern High School, stood out amongst the crowd and was named teacher of the year.

‘‘I want to say something to you because I am a product of your work,” Gross told the audience after receiving the award.

Gross commended all of the teachers for their hard work. She said that it was a teacher who turned her life around as she admitted to not being the easiest student for a teacher.

Gross said she had a teacher once tell her that she would never make it.

‘‘I wish she were here now,” Gross said.

Calvert Elementary School Vice Principal Michelle Frappier said Gross is ‘‘a leader among her peers.”

She said Gross takes the opportunity to challenge students on a daily basis.

Principal Joyce King said Gross is a wonderful teacher.

‘‘ I am so proud of her,” King said.

According to a press release by Calvert County public schools, Gross will represent Calvert County as one of 24 statewide nominees for Maryland Teacher of the Year. The winner will be announced in October.
