Who would have thought the site of an old workhouse would now be a delightful place to live! Well, a new development of one and two bedroom luxury apartments in Hertfordshire has succeeded – helped by gorgeous kitchens produced by Kirolite.

The 11 bespoke, fully-fitted kitchens feature high-lacquer finish on cupboards topped with a seamless, Hi-Macs work surface. Taking the client’s brief and transforming it into stunning modern kitchens, the heart of a home.

The apartments (by developerHerts Builders Ltd) are contemporary, while retaining the individuality and exterior features of the original building.

The site has lots of historic interest, with the original listed building being a workhouse in the 1800s. It subsequently became a hospital before it’s conversion to offices in the 1990s.

Hight street tech tables

A new contract saw us producing deluxe display tables for a mobile phone retail giant, using stylish modern display units to promote the latest techie gadgets.

Shaped MDF and plywood was laminated in white gloss and brushed aluminium with ABS edges and brushed solid surface.

Leg channels concealed cabling while a hidden underneath drawer reveals a drop-down access panel.

We produced this gorgeous table top – among other items of furniture – for the interior refurbishment of a 55m superyacht in the south of France.

Featuring a granite inlay in the centre, book-matched veneer and solid wenge edges with inlaid stainless steel edge, the top will be mounted on a pedestal of stainless steel and leather.

Combining materials has a great effect to overall design, bringing a unique style to the yacht’s interior. Granite and Wenge was used throughout the boat to bring all pieces of furniture together.

Kitchen top with steel

Kirolite manufactured this kitchen top with seamless bend for offices at Elite Fabrication & Welding at Poole; it featured a smart stainless steel insert on the front edge and splashback – both made by Elite itself.

Elite installed the kitchen as part of a refurbishment to its new premises including offices, entrance and stairway.

The two Dorset companies have a long working relationship of producing high-end products for clients in a mix of stainless steel and wood or solid surfaces.

Dauntless deployed

Best wishes to the crew of HMS Dauntless as it sets sail for a five-month counter-piracy operation.

Kirolite last year fitted a new counter and fittings to the ship’s wardroom for officers – in solid surface and oak – through a contract with Oyster Yachts, which designed the improvements.

One of the Royal Navy's most advanced warships, it left its home at Portsmouth on January 1 for a routine deployment to the Gulf. The Type 45 destroyer will maintain a continuous presence in the region deterring piracy and keeping the sea lanes open for free and safe passage of merchant vessels.

During her time away Dauntless will make several stops in the Mediterranean for training as well as visiting ports in a number of Gulf States to strengthen ties in the region.

Platinum... or is it?

On this bespoke superyacht we finished a host of fittings in a convincing and robust metal-look finish (distressed platinum) that ran as a theme throughout the ship.

Some items we made from wood and coated, others – like this amazing spiral staircase - were made by another supplier for us to finish. We also manufactured luxury doors, cupboards, vanity units and wall cladding for this installation.

Coating wood or metal products in an antique metal finish is becoming a regular job for us, working with interior designers and discerning customers who expect increasingly exotic finishes in homes, hotels, offices, retail stores and superyachts.

We made this TV audio unit for an existing customer, in whose home we also produced and fitted bespoke bedroom furniture. This wall-mounted unit is gorgeous, finished in high-gloss grey Caleidolegno veneer with three oak sliding doors that contain the entertainment media.

Our unit provides the perfect solution to hide unsightly wires, keeps media systems tidy and dust free and looks stylish in any home. Here the client has chosen finishes that match the flooring and doors throughout the home.

Here are pictures just through of bespoke fitted bedroom furniture we designed, manufactured and installed at a luxury south coast residence.

There are two wardrobes, one in the master bedroom and the other in a guest room, frames in stone grey with ABS edging and fronts in satin walnut finish. For aesthetics both units are fitted with backs, rather than straight onto the wall, creating a fully-finished piece.

Some ideas for using solid surface material in commercial, retail, hospitality and high-end residential interiors…

Interior designers and architects use solid surface as a material that can bring their design ideas into reality in ways that other materials cannot do. You can customise surfaces, virtually without creative limit. These materials feel great, have fantastic colours, can be translucent and shaped to almost any design. Here are some simple tips for you…

Combining materials produces wonderful results and solid surface sits well with them all, especially wood, metal, natural stone and glass.

You can have intricate designs carved using CNC, or moulded to produce raised patterns and textures.

Solid surface comes in pretty much any colour/hue/shade you want. Some come with great effects: vein, translucent, metallic fleck, or grain.

Want curves? No problem… these surfaces can be formed into any curved shape, or given perfect rounded edges. Or keep to straight lines… or mix it up, your choice.

Light with translucent solid surface produces a very special luminosity. Illuminated logos, subdued lighting effects, eye-catching glowing surfaces… all are in your grasp.

And when you want an imposing, classic look, like stone or marble – use it big and solid surface is amazing for walls and pillars. Being virtually seamless, solid surface creates a wall cladding upon which you can create amazing forms and designs.

Stairway to heaven-ly Dorset

We have just manufactured and installed this minimal oak and glass staircase in a newly-built house in Purbeck.

Architect Iain Freeman commissioned the staircase from Kirolite for his new home on the edge of the historic village of Briantspuddle. Although the roof is thatched as an acknowledgement to a long tradition of that style in the village, the new house is a modern interpretation, a theme which is carried through to the interiors, including the staircase.

The staircase is a seemingly simple cut string solution. Finished in solid and veneered oak it is constructed on a steel armature with a glass balcony and balustrades, stainless steel tread inserts for extra grip and round section solid oak handrails. It stands independent of the walls and at night when it is backlit it appears free-standing in front of the two storey hall window. By day the hall is flooded with light and allows an almost uninterrupted view of the rural landscape.

An unusual job for us… a furniture manufacturer supplied a lovely coffee table for a superyacht, with metal frame and top of shell embossed in polycarbonate.

Our role was to coat the metalwork in the same metal finish (distressed platinum) that we had applied to lots of wood and metal trim as a theme throughout the boat. Our own work for the luxury boat included doors, cupboards, vanity units and wall cladding.

Dressing up

A stack of lovely wooden drawer fronts with a metallic finish waiting for delivery to a luxury home.

We produced the bespoke drawer units for a dressing room… the feature of the drawer fronts was completed with the same gold, leather-effect wall hanging that was used in the bedroom next to the dressing room. When the installation is complete, we'll update you with more details and pictures.

A lovely pair

This novel pair of twin bedside cabinets came to us as a concept for a new superyacht – and needed to be flexible for use either side-by-side between twin beds or separately on each side of a double bed.

We designed and manufactured them (and others) in the same metal frame in distressed platinum finish, wood veneer and white leather that ran throughout the luxury boat. Each unit has a push-to-open drawer and smaller space below accessed by a hinged flap.

It was made as two separate components to look as one and is easy to take apart - joined only by a magnetic, leather-covered connector that simply lifts off.

With space at a premium in the superyacht bedrooms, the units were shaped at the back to sit over utilities trunking that runs along the foot of the bedroom back wall. Other design challenges included how the free-standing units would support themselves and stay upright – which was achieved by clever weight balance.

Kitchen with sales advantage

We promised a photo of a bespoke kitchen design we produced and manufactured, which is helping provide a sales advantage in a developer’s conversion of an office block to luxury apartments… and here it is! (Click on the picture for more detail).

Our contract with Herts Builders is to produce 21 high-end kitchens for the project in Palmers Green, London.

IDM Developments’ construction team wanted a unique kitchen design to help boost its edge in a very busy property market, with a specific colour and requirements. It involved a handle-less system with a contemporary look and a bespoke colour that will last.

Cupboard fronts are in an ivory colour, while formed metal sections are introduced in the kicker plates. The LG Hi-macs solid-surface tops provide a seamless finish regardless of length.

Interior designers visiting our Dorset factory are often surprised at the large size of our 27,000 sq feet production facility.

Well, we’ve been around since 1942 and have grown at a fair rate, majoring in high-end wood furniture and components for superyacht, residential, commercial and retail interiors.

And the more recent addition of our solid surface fabrication facility is one of the largest in the south of England.

There really are no limits to how creative you can be! Now, this amazing reception area in HI-MACS at Syzygy’s offices in Frankfurt (which we love) isn’t our installation… but let’s work together to create something just as dramatic for one of your clients!

Long on solid surface

New installation: we produced this unusual unit that was designed to fill specific space in a company’s reception area – 8.7 metres in length using a combination of Zebrano panels and white Hi-Macs solid surface. The project was taken from initial designs through manufacture and installation, it provides both an internet café counter and reception cupboard.

We manufactured the unit in a style to match the décor of the reception area, as part of a complete building refurbishment by interior fit out and design company Burnham Workplace.
