Today is the onset of the programs and activities prepared for, in celebration of the 2nd Philippine National Nursing Research Conference that University of Mindanao has actively supported. The November 12-13, 2009 2nd Annual Research Conference is conducted at Marco Hotel, Alwana Business Park Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City. The event is organized by Philippine Association Institutions for Research, Philippine Nursing Association (Misamis Oriental Chapter) and the growing Philippine National Nursing Research Society. This year's celebration has a theme: “Developing Best Practices for the Nursing Profession through Research”.

The 1st National Conference was held in General Santos City, wherein several institutions interestingly supported. In same manner, the 2nd Research Conference is full packed with several enriching activities like Plenary Sessions, Forum, Workshops, Concurrent Sessions Meetings by region & chapters, Research presentations and the most exciting is the island hoping!

Invited guests include: Dr. Cindy Leigh, a Professor from Australia Catholic University; Dr. Zenaida Gersana, the OIC Director, CHED Region X; Dr. Carmencita Abaquin, Chair, Board of Nursing; Dr. Carmelita Divinagracia, President of ADPCN; Dr. Josefina Tuazon, the Dean of UP College of Nursing; Dr. Amelia Rosales, member of the Board of Nursing; Dr. Bernarda C. Lleno, RN, PhD, Health Supervisor, CHED Region 10; Dr. Genaro V. Japos, RPO Director, Liceo de Cagayan University; and many others.

University of Mindanao College of Nursing has sent two of their Faculty members: Mr. Dennis C. Padernilla, RN, MN and MR. Rexie G. Bagnol, RN, RM, MAN and both are research presenters of the above-mentioned affair.

THE NATIONAL CONFERENCES

The spirit of faculty development is evident itself throughout the life and works in University of Mindanao College of Nursing. Over the years the college has strongly supported their faculty development practices along with many other established activities and programs, that have been coordinated through their partner organizations and sponsors.

Today, November 12, 2009; three (3) of the competent faculty members of the College participates in the national convention. MS. Aileen S. Espra, M. Sci., joins the National Conference hosted by The Philippine Society for the Study of Nature. Meanwhile, MR. Rexie G. Bagnol, RN, RM, MAN and MR. Dennis C. Padernilla RN, MN, are present in the said national event sponsored by the Philippine National Nursing Research Society; whereby both of them will be presenting their corresponding researches on November 13, 2009.

The Nursing department encourages all of their faculty and students to the wide range of opportunities, and then provides them assistance in order for them to take full advantage of these opportunities. After all, development programs can help create an environment conducive to the growth, revitalization and renewal of the teaching and learning process, able for faculty and students to expand their horizons personally and professionally.

AENTDE/NANDA-I International Congress for Nurses

Filipino Nurses can grab this once in a lifetime opportunity: Participate in the AENTDE/NANDA-I International Congress in Palacio de Congresos in Madrid on the 12th, 13th and 14th of May, 2010.

The congress will serve as a venue to discuss the present and future state requirements regarding nursing languages, with the national and international personalities. Nurses will enjoy the chance to share with other nurses from around the world who also currently use nursing languages, improvements, issues, their experiences, and innovations in order to go on building a common language that allows further identification, definition and development of knowledge about nursing discipline.The use of international languages which facilitate communication, research and the sharing of knowledge is a necessity which is felt by more and more professionals in clinical practice, education informatics and management. Furthermore, it is being demanded by a globally and information technology driven world.

Aside from taking advantage of this academic journey, participants will also have the opportunity to take a glimpse of the enchanting Madrid; and its cosmopolitan city. Enjoy the museums, shopping, different leisure environments such as “Madrid of the Austrias” or simply relaxing in the “Retiro Park”.

The congress will take place at the Palacio de Congresos de Madrid, located in La Castellana street. The central location of this venue will encourage participants to explore Madrid and all that this bustling city has to offer in terms of galleries, theatres, shops, museums, monuments and historic buildings. The aims of the conference are to :

Manuscript Preparation

Type manuscripts double-space leaving margins of at least one inch. Number the pages consecutively beginning with the first page of text. Begin each element below on a new page:

Title page: Write a brief, specific, and descriptive title. Include the full names of all authors, their degrees, titles, affiliations and any acknowledgments of financial support.
Abstract: Prepare a structured abstract. For research reports (100-120 words): purpose, methods, findings, conclusions, implications for nursing practice. For clinical articles (75-100 words): purpose, data sources, data synthesis, conclusions, implications for nursing practice. Identify three to five search terms for indexing purposes. Authors are not responsible for translating the abstracts. If the author's first language is Japanese, French, Spanish, or Portuguese, they may submit a translated abstract along with the English version.
Text: Prepare paper using standard manuscript form according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 5th ed., 2001. Length should be 12-15 pages inclusive of tables and figures. Use headings and subheadings as appropriate.
Tables: Number tables consecutively, cite each one in the text, type each one on a separate page, and place at end of the references.
Figures: Number figures consecutively, cite each one in the text, print each one on a separate page, include a title for each one, and place at the end of the references.
References: Use APA format. Cite all references in the text. Authors are responsible for accuracy of all reference citations. Publication may be delayed if references are in the incorrect format or if incorrect information is provided.
Manuscripts from limited English proficient authors will need to be edited for English before submission.

Review Process

------Key judging criteria include article's originality and format. Panel of judges involves international representation of nursing faculty, nurses in various practice areas and nursing book contributors.

------Nine one-year paid memberships or renewals in NANDA International will be awarded to the first nine articles submitted for the contest.

------Contest entry deadline is on November 20, 2009; while presentation of winning article in poster format shall be undertaken at the Madrid conference, and recognition at the conference Awards reception. THE COST OF NURSING
-------EDUCATION

------Filipino students' piled up complaints on the rising cost of education and competition in job placement are rising. Educators and school administrators are confronted with immense challenges to ensure that students who enrolled in their institution, benefit from quality education they deserve; one that will truly prepare them for a "life beyond school". Everyone are pressed in addressing this critical issues.

------The competency-based and community-oriented Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) curriculum was mandated by the government and recently been implemented by most higher institutions. The said curriculum involves teaching-learning process which is composed of the theoretical/didactic and experiential/RLE. The RLEs or Related Learning Experiences are composed of Clinical & Skills Laboratory. Curriculum developers designed the RLE activities and have carefully selected in order to develop competencies applying the nursing process in diverse health situations.

------But what makes Nursing expensive?... Remember that nursing is one field of discipline that is a combined science and technology as it harness BSN Students' skills in problem solving, communication, teaching, community organizing, values and attitudes. The following may be the common reasons for the rising cost of nursing education:

------1. High cost of the Schools' Operational Expenses (National & Local Government Taxes, Water & Light Bills, Health Services, others).

------2. Demand for higher Faculty and Non-teaching Personnels' Salaries.

------3. Demand for Competitive Instructional Facilities.

------4. Need for Technology Development/Adoption.

------5. Security Considerations.

------6. Demand of Other Health Institutions for Higher RLE Fees and/or Affiliation fees.

------7. Priority Research and Community Development Projects.

------8. Health, Library and other General Services.

------Nurses are the backbone of every nations' healthcare system. Although nursing may be an expensive course, most students think that it can be a long-term investment; and benefits as well as rewards can be ripped off later in life. Undeniably, many families have burdens regarding credit card debt, debt consolidation, payday loan consolidation, and others. Note that there is no need to worry that much since, there are so many strategies on debt management. Financial industries in fact provide ideal debt management programs. Other than that, students may also apply for scholarships to finance their education.

In the first-ever campaign of its kind, the "Mga Bantay ng Barangay": Anti Rabies Campaign Project of the College Student Government of the UM College of Nursing has been conducted last October 11, 2009. The project was launched through radio public service announcements featuring actual panel discussions on the nature, epidemiology, effects, control, prevention and action plans towards rabies-free community. The 3 hours radio campaign at Bombo Radio Philippines in Davao City was hosted and anchored by Bombo Rose Ramos; and were participated by the BSN IV Student Nurses namely: Junnel Baloca, Lovely Perez and Angel Surigao.

The campaign comes in support to the World Rabies Day celebration on September 28, 2009 and has been reenergized by various government and private institutes around the world including Philippine's Department of Health. World Health Organization (2009) documented at least 55,000 humans die from rabies each year around the world and mostly from exposure to dogs; and until recently, it continuously threaten communities, particularly children. Rabies is caused by a virus which is a microorganism smaller than bacteria. A virus cannot grow unless it is inside a living cell. The rabies virus can get into your body and attack your central nervous system and can result to serious organ damage and if left untreated, can result in death.

The CSG thru the BSN IV ensured a wide-range public education on how rabies virus can be transmitted; the expected signs and symptoms of rabies among victims; as well as the appropriate medical management..

Finally, "Mga Bantay ng Barangay": Anti Rabies Campaign Project is extended until October 28, 2009. Other activities which are still conducted by BSN 1, 2, 3 & 4 Students include: Print Ad Campaigns, Teaching Aid distribution to public and private schools, health teachings with pet owners & barangay health workers and the highlight is the Anti-rabies Dog Vaccination on October 28, 2009.

Call for Participants in the Anti-Rabies
Campaign Program

Rabies has been around for over 4,000 years, however, until the present time, it continuously threaten communities. Rabies is caused by a virus which is a microorganism smaller than a bacteria. A virus cannot grow unless it is inside a living cell. The rabies virus can get into your body and attack your central nervous system and can result to serious organ damage. Although, rabies is 100% preventable, World Health Organization (2009) documented at least 55,000 humans die from rabies each year around the world and mostly from exposure to dogs. If someone is sick with rabies, nearly 100% of the time, it will result in death. A person dies of rabies almost every 10 minutes. Almost half of all rabies deaths occur in children under the age of 15 years. Many developed countries have vaccines for animals and humans to prevent rabies.

September 28, 2009 was the Celebration of the World Rabies Day! Government and non-government organizations normally initiates activities that can help mitigate the problems related to rabies. The CSG the College of Nursing initiated month-long Anti-Rabies Campaign Program entitled Mga “BANTAY” ng Barangay in which aims are: 1. To disseminate significant information about rabies and the human population control of domesticated pets to its target recipients (pet owners, household members; radio listeners; students; etc.); 2. To health educate pet owners on their responsibilities in providing basic immunization to their pets to avoid rabies; 3. To health educate household members regarding the etiology, control, prevention and treatment of rabies; 4. To conduct orientation about “Humane Population Control of Dogs” among selected barangay officials of UM's Partner Communities, Volunteers and “Dog Pounders”; 5.To distribute teaching aids like lesson plans and CDs about rabies, to private and public schools (primary and secondary) within UM partner communities, that can be utilized by the teachers in primary and secondary schools.

Other specific activities that students can participate into are the: radio campaign, print media campaign, distribution of banners and campaign ads, distribution of lesson plans and resource units about rabies, health teachings among adolescent leaders, Purok Leaders as well as Barangay Police members of UM's Partner Communities and finally the 250 Dog Anti-rabies Immunization.

College of Nursing Student Government

The Bonafide students officially enrolled during the current year in the College of Nursing (Davao City) of this University constitute the organization called the College Student Government – College of Nursing (CSG-NSG).The team was created to be and will act as the liaison between the students and the administration, faculty and staff.

The organization selects eight (8-10) Officers via electoral process for major positions; and they will be the official representatives of the Student Government. Other than that, Committee chairpersons will also be elected from the year level officers (Level 1-Level 4). From its inception in 2003, Student Government has sought to be the chief student advocate in all areas of campus life. In addition to serving as the governing body of the student population, Student Government also participates heavily in the daily affairs of the University – inside and outside the campus activities. Through interaction with University officials and representation on University committees and councils.

As the chief student advocate on campus, Student Government is dedicated to the service of all UM BSN Students and the enhancement of their academic experience. The active student input is the most vital ingredient in the functioning of the UM Student Government. Fundamentally, we provide our fellow students a place to share their opinions on college issues and provides opportunities to get involved in college life. Participation encourages the development of leadership skills, as students work with each other, act as liaisons amongst the student body and interact with faculty and the administration in the promotion of student rights.

We assure our fellow BSN Students that on our humble means, we offer continuous input to the administration and share many suggestions in relation to the sentiments of the studentry. In the midst of various grievances and controversies, we extend to our fellow students some insights like: no conflict is resolved in the absence of proper communication; If one desires for a smooth journey towards change and development, the contribution of each and everyone should be highly visible and not merely end with acting the “roles of passive observers” and “articulator of complaints”; Lastly, the College recognize that BSN Students are very special and ultimately the organizations greatest resource!

In behalf of the College's Student Government, thank you for keeping the spirit of a culturally sensitive care to every family, community, and above all, for sustaining the very personal and positive atmosphere in our College.

Who we are?

University of Mindanao is one of the largest Universities in Mindanao Region.The School was establish in 1946 and is one of the oldest universities in Southern Philippines. It is a non-sectarian school offering the most number of college programs in this part of the country. The main campus is located in Davao City, and has contributed immensely to the rapid growth of Southern Mindanao through its successful graduates, both in private and the public sector.The University of Mindanao has ten (10) branches spread over thirteen (13) campuses in Southern Mindanao. It has a total student population of 29,765 (SY 2007-08). It is the largest private university in Mindanao with the most number of PACUCOA accredited programs in the country today.

Prior to the SY 2002-2003, the demand for nursing vocation was intense; and UM responded to the country’s shortage of nurses. University of Mindanao’s nursing program started last June 2003 aiming to produce nurses equipped with knowledge, skills, attitudes and values. Its pioneering batch started their clinical exposure at Davao Medical Center and Ricardo Limso Medical Center last June of school year 2005.

Roles of a NURSE

Dynamic Roles of a NURSE

The bottom module stirs under the educational group.
Nurses provide the basic source of care and assistance for patients at the most crucial points in their lives. The nurses are few of the known professionals that response need of clients that is particularly urgent. Thus, the quality of care delivered by them at the workplace are expected to be highly satisfactory if not excellent since the profession deals about human life; highly regarded more than anything.

Perhaps every individual's health care experience cannot be isolated from the contribution of a registered nurse. As everyone say, “Nursing is from womb to tomb”, and the several forms of care by nurses in between, are always attended by the knowledge, skills, support, the comforting and positivism. What are the probable sources of information utilized by nurses to inform practice?

The endeared need for better information useful for nurses, opted health care providers to engaged in evidence-based practice in care environments. Professional nurses served by utilizing the best available information to useful in practice. Overwhelmingly, nurses' perspectives have significantly improved in later years. Many nurses have fully recognized the use of diverse literatures to enhance teaching skills, health-related decisions, patient safety protocols, elimination of medical errors and improve patient care outcomes. They have also taken advantage of up-to-date opportunities in order to pursue expanded clinical responsibility and competency as means to expand career and professional growth.

Thus, it is not enough that graduates remain satisfied on the four years training they acquired in College, engaging in continuing education would be a necessity for a professional nurse who seeks to advance in nursing career and survive in a competitive battle field of health care.

HOW TO REACH BORACAY

Various routes lead to Boracay Island. The first option is to take a direct flight to Caticlan Airport from major airports of the country. Caticlan Airport is 10 minutes away from Caticlan Jetty Port. A tricycle is readily available right outside the airport arrival area to take you to and from the Jetty Port.

Kalibo is two hours away to Caticlan Jetty Port. From the airport, air-conditioned buses, mini-vans, and vehicles for rental are available to take you direct to and from Caticlan Jetty Port.

Another way is via ship from Manila, which will dock, depending on the weather, either a few minutes away from Caticlan or a little farther away. Caticlan, the entry point for Boracay, can be reached also by private cars or air-conditioned buses, via the 'strong republic nautical highway', stretching from Batangas, Luzon, to Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao.

A RoRo (Roll On - Roll Off) vessel leaves Batangas daily at 8.30 AM to Calapan, Mindoro. From there drive your own car or board a mini-van or air-conditioned bus to Roxas, Mindoro, where another RoRo vessel leaves at 2 PM for Caticlan, where the boat arrives at 6 PM. Private cars can be parked at one of the many shady and secured parking lots for a fee. No cars are allowed on Boracay Island. The same RoRo vessel leaves Caticlan daily at 9 AM.

For people with more time and an adventurous streak there is the overland route from Cebu over Negros to Iloilo and from there to Caticlan. It will take around 20-minutes by boat to Boracay land. The Regional Organizing Network-Western Visayas and The National Governing Board of the Philippine Nurses Association are organizing the National event which is The 87th Founding Anniversary, The 52nd Nurses’ Week Celebration and the 2009 Annual National Convention at Boracay EcoVillage Convention Center and Boracay EcoVillage and Convention Center in Station 1, Yapak, Boracay Island Malay, Aklan Resort, on October 19-22, 2009.

Participants from various healthcare organizations (particularly Nursing institutions) all over Philippines will gather in one of the most visited and enchanting island (Boracay) , to tackle issues related to the theme “Leading change: Building healthier nations.” This is to help prepare nurses become competent, flexible, politically and savvy leaders, able to energize others to adapt change which can be fueled by conceptualizing this event.The Annual Convention will highlight the shared obligation of nurses to be in the forefront of building healthier people. Preparing a life before departing the halls of the school to a higher sphere in Nursing.

Just as before you graduate, setting up an environment for the licensure examination preparation is important. A professional license is the passport to a better career and future! Thus, students need to do a lot of mind-setting and prepare themselves for the next battle . So if you think and feel the low confidence for the licensure exam taking, consider the following points:

1. Accept that you have insufficiency, provide yourself with warm acceptance, encouragement, boost your own morale and condition your psychological, physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions. Do not rely on other's motivation; be motivated yourself.

2. Communicate with your family, friends, academic heads and instructors properly and acquire as much support from them. Your family has to understand your needs as you prepare for the test taking procedures, at the same time, can provide you with financial assistance. Your mentors could also offer unsolicited or solicited advices, course references, and other referrals which may be helpful for your licensure exams.

3. Seek credible nurse experts (only) to orient you about different test-taking skills and strategies on how to smartly and effectively answer test on the questions. Other peers or colleagues may tempt you enroll in a popular review center which is just recommended or commissioned by extended acquaintances. Your mentors usually update you on the current trends and issues typically asked in the actual licensure examinations.

4. Note that it is very important that your strengths and weaknesses in the different subject areas in nursing be first assessed prior to starting any review program. Some review centers offer diagnostic tests as part of their program.

5. Should you decide to enroll in a review center, do some background check or track records: Licensing requirements, number of takers and passers in the previous years, passing rates, geographic location of review centers together with the reviewers' qualifications, types of tests given (diagnostics, pre & post, comprehensive, etc.), educational facilities, resources and benefits offered, fees (should be reasonable), and other added services. The centers should enhance your analytical and critical thinking skills by letting you answer test questions after each subject's lecture and rationalize it.

6. Do not cram. Common mistake of most students is to intensely study as much as they could during the "last hours" of the test preparation that can result to stress and tensions. The brain can not appropriately process when it is overloaded and stressed out. Practice self-discipline at all times.

7. Strengthen your spiritual belief as this will sustain your energy as you confront the board exam effectively. Have faith (not just confidence) that you will pass, and/or top the exam.

8. Be inspired. Think of your loved ones who keep their trust and confidence that you will succeed; think always that what your efforts are not solely for self-actualization but also for their own gratification.

The Board of Nursing Shares the Step by Step Procedures on How to apply for the PNLE

Qualifications for Examinations. - In order to be admitted to the examination for nurses, an applicant must, at the time of filing his or her application, establish to the satisfaction of the Board of Nursing that:

a. He or she is a citizen of the Philippines, or a citizen or subject of a country which permits Filipino nurses to practice within its territorial limits on the same basis as the subject or citizen of such country: Provided, That the requirements for the registration or licensing or nurses in said country are substantially the same as those prescribed in this Act;

b. He or she is at least eighteen (18) years of age: Provided, That any underage applicant who successfully passes the examination shall not be permitted or licensed to practice nursing until he or she shall have reached the age of majority;

c. He or she is in good health and is of good moral character; and

d. He or she is a holder of a bachelors- degree in nursing from a college or university duly recognized by the proper government agency.

Licensure Examination. - The licensure examination for the practice of nursing in the Philippines shall be given by the Board not earlier than one (1) month but not later than two (2) months after the closing of the semester prescribed by the Department of Education, Culture and Sports. The examination shall be held in the City of Manila or in such places as may be decided by the Board subject to the approval of the Professional Regulation Commission.

Scope of Examination. - The scope of the examination for the practice of nursing in the Philippines shall be determined by the Board. The Board shall take into consideration the objectives of the nursing curriculum, the broad areas of nursing, and other related disciplines and competencies in determining the subjects of examinations.

Rating in the Examination. - In order to pass the examination, an examinee must obtain a general average rating of at least seventy-five percent (75%) with a rating of not below sixty percent (60%) in any subject. An examinee who obtains an average rating of seventy-five percent (75%) or higher but gets a rating below sixty percent (60%) in any given subject must take the examination again, but only in the subject or subjects where he or she rated below sixty percent (60%). In order to pass the succeeding examination, an examinee must obtain a rating of at least seventy-five percent (75%) in the subject or subjects repeated. An examinee who despite the third examination fails to obtain at least seventy-five percent (75%) in the subject or subjects repeated shall no longer be allowed to take the examination, unless he proves to the satisfaction of the Board that he/ she has undergone a refresher course consisting in enrollment and passing in the regular fourth year subjects in a recognized nursing school.

Issuance of Certificates. - A certificate of registration as nurse shall be issued to any applicant who passes the examination upon payment of the prescribed fees. Every certificate of registration shall show the full name of the registrant; the serial number, the signature of the members of the Board, and the official seal of the Board.

Fees for Examination and Registration. - Applicants for licensure examination and for registration shall pay the prescribed fees set by the Professional Regulation Commission.

Registration by Reciprocity. - Certificates of registration may be issued without examination to nurses registered under the laws of any foreign state or country: Provided, That the requirements for the registration or licensing of nurses in said country are substantially the same as those prescribed under this Act: Provided, further, That the laws of such state or country grant the same privileges to registered nurses of the Philippines on the same basis as the subject or citizens of such foreign state or country.

Non-issuance of Certificates in Certain Cases. - No person convicted by final judgment of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude or any person guilty of immoral or dishonorable conduct shall be issued a certificate of registration. The Board shall furnish the applicant a written statement setting forth the reasons for its actions which shall be incorporated in the records of the Board.

Revocation and Suspension of Certificates. - The Board shall have the power to revoke or suspend the certificate of registration of a nurse upon any of the following grounds:

a. For any of the causes mentioned in the preceding section;
b. For unprofessional and unethical conduct;
c. For gross incompetence and serious ignorance;
d. For malpractice or negligence in the practice of nursing; or
e. For the use of fraud, deceit, or false statements in obtaining a certificate of registration.

Re issuance of Revoked Certificates and Replacement of Lost Certificates. - The Board may, for reasons of equity and justice or when the cause for revocation has disappeared or has been cured and corrected, upon proper application therefor and the payment of the required fees, issue another copy of the certificate of registration.

STEPS IN APPLYING:

STEP 1. Secure Action Sheet from the PRC Customer Service Center (CSC) and accomplish the same.

STEP 2. Submit the Action Sheet for processing and evaluation at any of the Processing Windows together with the following:

Original and photo/xerox copies of Transcript of Records with Special Order and Date of Graduation SCANNED PICTURES AND WITH REMARKS “FOR BOARD EXAMINATION PURPOSES ONLY” .View Res.2004-200.(Graduates of government schools and institutions/programs accredited by recognized accredited agencies under the FAAP are exempted from SO [B]). Graduates of New Schools/degree Programs must submit School Recognition and/or Permit to operate.

- Original and photo/xerox copy of NSO-issued Birth Certificate (in NSO security paper; if NSO copy not very clear, bring copy from the Local Civil Registrar)

- Original and photo/xerox copies of Marriage Contract in NSO security paper (for married female only;if NSO copy not very clear, bring copy from local civil registrar).

- Four (4) passport size colored pictures in white background with complete name tag.

- Current Community Tax Certificate (Cedula)

- Other specific requirements as required by the Commission and/or Professional Regulatory Board.

NOTE: Secure the following from the processor upon approval of your application:

- Computerized Application form (CAF)
- Permanent Examination and Registration Record card (PERRC) (for first-timers)
- Notice of Admission (NOA)

STEP 3. Pay examination fee at any of the Cashier Windows. Get Official Receipt.

- Baccalaureate Degree - P 900.00
- Non-Baccalaureate Degree - P600.00
- Removal - P450.00

STEP 4. Pay for metered documentary stamps and mailing envelope with metered documentary stamps at the CSC.

STEP 5. Accomplish the CAF, PERRC, and NOA. Indicate the Official Receipt number, date, and amount on the CAF.

STEP 6. Proceed to any of the Issuance Windows (Window 9, 10, 11, 12) for final review of qualifications and documents and issuance of NOA, Applicant's Stub, Program of Examination, Examinee's Guide and Self-Instruction Sheet.

STEP 7. Keep the Notice of Admission, Official Receipt, and the Applicant's Stub. Bring these with you on the first day of the examination. For further information, read the General Instructions at the back page of the Notice of Admission, Program of Examination, Examinee's guide and Self-Instruction Sheet.

STEP 8. Bring your NOA when you verify with the PRC your school and building assignment which will be posted at the PRC premises two (2) three(3) working days before the examination date.

Ready for a Life of a Professional Nurse?

On the journey of envisioning a job in an organization, providing care to people; nurses are usually on the front line. Most of the time, they are those whom common masses turn to for assistance. These health care providers advocate peoples right for health education, community organizing, freedom for decision-making, who stand by anyone at critical moments, clarifies issues about the health systems which confuses many, and reassure patients during moments when they have doubts or fear. Nurses are the wheel and catalysts of health services.

At the terminal school year of student nurses, they may be so overwhelmed and with great sigh of relief! and to their surprise, realities tend to be more struggling, exhausting and demanding. In this digital age, the role of the nurses become more diversified as the widespread integration of information technology are being integrated with health care agencies. The role of nurses in the delivery of patient's care has been redefined, re-modelled and refined. It is not enough to acquire diploma or graduate in highly acclaimed nursing school. Nurses are expected to be "multi-task" workers; highly qualified (with graduate degrees and other skills certification) for easier access of job placement. They are expected to function well and be held accountable for the systematic planning; responsible for the holistic as well as humanistic nursing care for their clients and also their families.

The current era has become the metaphor for the unique challenges and opportunities therein a nursing profession. Academic institutions have the greatest responsibility for preparing the succeeding batch of nurses. In the same way that BSN graduates need not be satisfied enough for what they have acquired in the four (4) years of schooling. The more the better! More seminars and trainings, more clinical experiences, more course credits in graduate studies (MS, MN, MAN, MPH and others); passer of international nurse qualifying exams, etc. then surely you will land on the job you ultimately desire for. But before thinking about work, it would be wise to focus first on the pre-review (enhancement program) the College has strategically designed for you; make sure you pass it with flying colors!

USEFUL GUIDE IN SELECTING

A NURSING SCHOOL

Before getting into the peak of decision making as to which school will you finally attend to for College, its never too late to have a last minute background checking. Very simple guidelines can help & can lead you to the right school. Never forget to narrow choices. Compare the tract records of at least top five schools of your choice; Find out if:

The school meets your personal and professional needs. It is very important that the school system provide strong academic and "personalized" support. Does it guide students and assess their interests, abilities and career options prior to enrollment? students must be guided prior and even after graduation. Make sure that basic student services are being provided - testing, advising and counseling services, dental-medical services, state-of-the-art facilities, enhancement/reviewprograms, financial assistance and others. Consider the availability of courses, student and faculty ratio as well.

The School strictly adheres to academic standards and submits for accreditation. It is a common sense decision to look for the "valid government recognition" of your prospective institution. Accrediting teams ensure that Colleges and Universities comply to "what is fitting for the overall operations of the school" Trace its tract records in terms of licensure performance versus student population.

Affiliation. The more linkages and collaborators are tied up with an institution, the more strong are the students' academic development. Partner communities can also be the future job places of student trainees.

Location and Physical Environment. The geographic set up of a school must favor the student clientèle. It must not be too far nor too near the place of residence. The school's cite must be generally conducive for learning, sanitized, safe and secure from intruders or outsiders.

Faculty reputation. Though this factor is quiet difficult to assess at hand, do some queries about faculty qualifications, their engagement to continuing education, professional experiences and even inside and outside classroom behavior. Obviously, teacher factors play very essential and creates an impact to the students' learning and overall personalities.

Fees and charges.. In most developing countries, getting into college as experienced by the many, has become a privileged rather than an inherent right. Every College or University is varied in the cost offerings. Schools that are too expensive may not guarantee quality learning. When estimating cost, remember other fees, room and board, miscellaneous fees, transportation and other personal expenses.

These are few but very basic areas that students and parents should be watchful about, prior to jumping into final decisions of entering a College or University.

The Student Nurses' Plea Against Disruption of the Seas

The world's hundreds of thousands of volunteers recently met to celebrate the 24th International Coastal Clean Up. September 19, 2009 marked the commemoration of oceans' and seas best! Millions of people all over the world hitting their local beach resorts, lakes, rivers and other waterways for the 24th annual International Coastal Cleanup - the largest volunteer effort of its kind.

UM initiated the 24th International Coastal Clean-Up in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Barangay Matina Aplaya in Davao City. Participants spend half day duration in removing trash and debris from coastlines, keeping track of every piece of trash they find and contained it in sacks. The participants noted that the problem of marine debris are getting serious. Stakeholders from the public, industry, and government officials must work together to address the problem of marine debris.
