For this assignment I chose the technological advances taking place on the film industry. Digital film is becoming more and more popular today. American moviemakers are following the lead of independent filmmakers, which has lead to digital filming taking over and changing the film industry as we know it (physorg.com, n.d.).
Digital film making, in this day and age, is the logical step because of technology advances. People who enjoy film entertainment are starting to stay home either because they have a home theater setup with surround sound or because they can download a movie at the touch of a button. Movie theaters are becoming digital cinemas and will continue with this transition for years to come (physorg.com, n.d.).
The movie industry will continue, in my opinion, to keep up with times and changes in technology. The question is if today’s technology makes is so easy to make a movie, watch it, or download it, what could make current advances easier? Sometimes technology makes things easy that did not necessarily called for a boost to make them easier. What can be faster and more time efficient than downloading a movie in a matter of seconds?
I believe that as a college graduate one of the important things that you learn is that learning never stops; that embracing change is a sought after quality; that opening the doors to the new and exciting can pay off even though it may seem like one is navigating uncharted waters. As a college student I think that a great part of your training includes lectures on how to handle technological advances, even if he or she does not have the technical training to directly handle them. The key college student have over people without that college education is that college students are trained to adapt to different environments and are given the tools to do so.

EEvery business owner will need funding in one way or another. When I looked at the websites provided on our assignment it was no surprise to me that so many options exist today to fit nearly every business owner’s needs. The first website I looked into was opportunity finance. The one thing that captured my attention is that this website is not going to provide direct funding but a network to learn and possibly find financing options. These options are not limited to small business but housing, community facilities and such. The website provides links to the possible resources a business owner can make use of including trade associations and government resources (opportunityfinance.net, n.d.).
The website does have certain requirements that need fulfilling before a member qualifies during the application process. Some requirements include (a) be a member in good standing, (b) demonstrate that the use of capital is consistent with OFN’s mission, (c) demonstrate the capacity to use capital productively, and (e) demonstrate at least two years of operating surpluses in the last three years (opportunityfinance.net, n.d.). Additional information includes an overview on the CDFI Bond Program overview that was enacted by the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 as a transformational tool that will provide a new source of long-term/low-cost capital to disadvantaged communities (opportunityfinance.net, n.d.).
The next website I decided to cover is cdvca.org. This website is also a network where business owners can also find funding options such as CDVC funds which basically makes equity investments on businesses in economically distressed areas in the United States. So this type of funding would apply to current business owners whose business is already up and running (cdvca.org, n.d.).
In order to start the process, one requirement is to fill out an application and questionnaire where you have to provide information about (a) your organization's mission statement, (b) a description of the organization, (c) a description of the investment strategy of your funds, and more. Some additional information includes local conferences and events, public policy, and other federal initiatives (cdvca.org, n.d.).

The views on business from the experts below did bring a lot of insight on how to successfully handle a business. To begin with, America’s Top Chef Bobby Flay owns several high-end restaurants, and casual dining burger places. Together these establishments gross million of dollars a year (bpexpertviews.com, 2011). The one thing I thing is important to highlight in this expert’s vision is that he diversifies. I believe that diversification would be a great tool to make use of in my business plan. For instance, this businessman did not limit himself to restaurants; he became a spokesman and an author but managed to keep his vision within the original industry.
The next successful businesswoman I admire the most is Oprah Winfrey. To try and number all of Oprah’s accomplishments would take book. She started out as a broadcasting pioneer, and went on to become a titan in the entertainment industry (Allen, n.d.). Oprah’s vision is and always has been of particular interest to me. Oprah is the perfect example of how one can be successful in any business when one works for a community’s best interests. With all her success, Oprah has always found the time to do her fair share of charity work, community involvement and much more. I think a part of a business plan should always include giving something back to the customer’s that keep the business profitable. For instance, a lot of businesses contribute to charities and encourage employees to do so by offering to match a percentage of their donations to the charity of their choice.
Another businessman who has left his mark in the business world is Donald Trump. He is the New York real state magnate. His vision has always been to lock the best business deals he can. Donald Trump has countless properties and has become a true entertainment personality having host a business show (Investingvalue.com, n.d.). The one quality Donald Trump has is his people skills. Although this term has become meaningless overtime it is an asset on the business world. A key to running a business is learning how to read people and what they do. Today many businesses even train their employees on reading body language in the workplace. This to me would be the take away I would incorporate into my business plan.
In closing, when starting a business one has a lot to learn from those ahead of us. Their ups and downs are something we should always study carefully and learn from.

Kevin Tailor is an experienced public relations (PR) consultant. His area of expertise includes company positioning, and messaging. In addition, Kevin Taylor is an accomplished writer and commentator on PR issues. He is also a strategist who specializes on mobile IPTV and IT companies (Taylor, n.d.).
I found an article on Taylor’s views about a business plan that stated that a business plan couldn’t be in verbal form only, particularly when it involves a partnership. According to Taylor a verbal agreement could never substitute a contract, and specified exclusivity clauses. Another key element of a business plan is IP protection.
In addition to protecting a company’s innovative ideas IP also opens the door to the global market. Specifically, Taylor suggests that a company should prepare an IP portfolio to make sure it has valid registrations in the countries it will either operate or manufacture in. Taylor final comment on the business plan concept was that innovative companies should always make sure to turn their innovative ideas into a competitive advantage (telegraph.co.uk, 2010).

Michael Dean
For the next section of my blog I decide to elaborate on Michael Dean’s views on the Stockshifters’ business plan. To begin with, Michael Dean is a Marketing Specialist with a director level experience in both marketing and business development. Among other areas of expertise, he has tapped in to sales, IT management, and new service development. He is currently the head of marketing at the National Computer Centre (Dean, n.d.).
The key elements that Dean has brought up about this business plan include communication, a target market, and a work force. Dean’s position on this business plan is to communicate to the consumer the benefits of the new technology Stockshifters is bringing to the table. This will allow the consumer the opportunity to break from the old and embrace the new. The main reason for this strategy is the fact that with new technology, as with anything new from drugs, food, and more, there will be resistance from those who stand to make a profit from the present product or service. In addition, the workforce will play key role, as the company will need a competent sales staff to better sell their new product to the consumer. A sales staff can go from front-of-the-line associates to phone representatives.
Michael Dean truly has a goo point regarding the communication to the consumer. Delozier (n.d.) said:
The best definition of marketing communication is the process of presenting an integrated set of stimuli (promotion mix) to a target market with the extent to evolve a desired set of responses within that target market. (Para. 1)

In closing, a business plan has many elements that need to be considered to make sure the venture is a success. Business owners will continue to strive to make a profit and the changing needs on the market they operate will continue to be of great importance no matter the nature or ultimate goal the plan established.

The artist I chose for this particular assignment is Prince Cat-Eyez. One of the reasons I chose this particular artist is because he happens to be a great friend of mine, and because he is a self-made public figure. Prince Cat-Eyes has, in my opinion, successfully uses social media to promote his material, and give continuous updates on his tours, and new releases.
Some of the channels he utilizes include Face Book, and Twitter.
When any of his fans visit his profiles they will be able to read his biography, accomplishments, new material, and upcoming events. Prince Cat-Eyez has successfully used these channels to put his name out in the industry, and booked many gigs in different events.
It is very important to mention also that another social media channel he uses is YouTube. If any of his fans type his name they will find some of his most recent videos. He has created an image and a style that stand out. This particular channel is by far the most effective because this is the finalized product. This is what the public ultimately sees, and what gives him the name and reputations he made for himself. In addition, his My Space profile gives his fans access to pictures, bio, and free music.
Aside from social media, Prince Cat-Eyez also resorts to networking channels as part of his marketing efforts. He has different contacts with recording studios, and booking agents he has worked with in the past. Prince Cat-Eyes is on the right path by combining social media with a networking channel because this is crucial to any artist or business that want their name to be known. By creating a social media network you can reduce your social networking efforts significantly and still get the best results from it. By integrating the 2 you not only can monitor the outcome your efforts produced but also how others in the industry are achieving their goals and hitting target markets (virtualsocialmedia.com, 2010).
I would suggest that this artist run his own website with all his information from Bio, pictures, music, downloads and such. He can use his existing channels to promote it, for example he can include a Twitter or Face Book button on the website. He can also look into different SEO options to drive traffic to his website (i.e. pay-per-click, and such) and increase his brand awareness.

The fashion world has always interested me, ever since I was a child. I have some favorite designers and models, and sketch many looks including, ready-to-wear looks, costumes, different decades and eras, and more. This will be couple with my brushing up my sewing, and constructing skills. A head of costumes job for a major film company is on my list of possibilities.

This article shows us that the fashion industry has not only discovered digital media but has embraced it. I must admit that before I read this article I had no idea of how much the fashion industry has come to depend on digital channels. On reading the article you will find that top designers like Gucci sell tickets online for online viewing of runway shows (Kramer, 2011).

Another example is Ralph Lauren who created several apps around his products and audiences. According to the article its latest application is the RLX app. The application is name RLX because one can see athletes wearing RLX clothing. The app is meant to give the public a clear idea of what the product is about and what is meant to do (Kramer, 2011).

I strongly believe that today is easy to realize how digital media has taken over the fashion industry, entertainment industry, and many others. For example, every reality TV shows such, as Top Model, and Project Runway are available online. Many of this shows can even involve the public by allowing viewers to pick favorites and sometimes either text or visit a website to cast a vote for a favorite contestant in the show.

In the case of shows such as American Idol the final decision on a winner comes directly from the viewers of the show. In recent years, each contestant was assigned a code a viewer can use to vote for his or her favorite contestant by simply texting the code. I really believe the digital media will continue to play a part in how industries reach their target markets. The new generations have grown up to know nothing but digital media. For this blog I chose to review some websites I found on our collaboration assignment posted by Mandy Chenoweth. The reason I decided to review these websites is because on that particular posting Mandy mentioned that she is dyslexic. This really hit home for me because I have a dear friend from college who was also dyslexic and I know how hard she had to work to overcome this disability, and get good grades on both individual, and team papers.

If memory serves me she always was concerned with the proofreading part of the assignments, and would always request a neighbor friend to proofread for her. I was very grateful to her because her disability made me work harder, and commit more to our work together right down to the day we graduated.

To begin with, I visited a website called www.Arborservices.co/editing.php. This website offers such services as editing, proofreading, line editing, and more. The websites offers a detailed explanation of how each service works, and also a price rate attached to each product. For example, comprehensive editing cost 0.04 to 0.14 cents a word, line editing cost 0.04 to 0.08 cents a word, and book read cost $500 per 20,000 words. While the services offered are excellent I find the prices a bit exorbitant. For instance, if you go with the book read option you have to figure that 1,000 words will fit in 2 pages (depending on size of print) so 20,000 words will fit in 40 pages. This mean you will pay $500 for a 40-page book. Imagine if you have a 200-page book, this would not be an option for someone trying to self-publish.

Next I visited www.editing-writing.com/book-editing.shtml. This website was not as straightforward as the one above, and certainly did not have as much detail on the main page; the pricing was not there, and you need to navigate through different links to learn about services offered. One thing this website did have was some reviews from users, and their comments on the editor who helped them with their work. Reading the reviews shows you that the work is very personal, and the author has direct contact with the editor, which makes it more personal.

Overall I found both websites useful but different in many levels. I was pleasantly surprise to learn that many services exist out there to help authors make their material known to the public. This was definitely a great learning experience.

Is self-publishing right for me?

Throughout this class we have learned all about self-publishing. My personal focus lay on book self-publishing. Although all the information provided was most helpful the question still remains whether or not self-publishing is the right option for any given author. Something I found very interesting is the fact that authors face the same quandary but for different reasons based on genre, market, resources, and such.

The research I conducted on the Internet lead me to a website that provides a very generic checklist that anyone can use to determine if self-publishing is right for him or her. The fact that is generic in nature makes it easy for any author to make good use of it no matter the genre.

Of course one advantage of self-publishing is that you get to keep the rights to the book if you choose to do so and get 100% royalties. These facts alone make it very appealing to the average author who is trying to put his or her work out there.

The website’s checklist appears very simple but in my opinion the questions it poses really put things in perspective. It basically helps you analyze each factor independently. For instance, you have to consider the market and ask yourself, is the market narrow and easily targeted? If you have a marketing strategy ask yourself if you have the time and energy to set things in motion and keep them going? If you do self-publish are you setting realistic goals in terms of profit and time marketing will take? In addition, you have to ask yourself some hard questions and try to be as objective as possible. For instance, you need to do some soul-searching and look at your work as the average reader would and ask whether or not you would read this material? If a professional opinion regards your work as average and not excellent ask yourself if you are considering self-publishing for egotistic reasons (writeservices.com, n.d.)?

Previously I have mentioned how important is to have a strong foundation when developing a business plan. Self-publishing is no exception. I strongly believe you have to have a well-thought out plan before even searching for the means to self-publish

An Interview with Jason Miller

Jason Miller Esq. has been practicing law for years. Being a close friend of mine I thought he is the logical choice for this assignment. I approached Jason with my business idea and asked him a few questions about intellectual property (IP), company structure, and such. His professional point of view gave me some interesting pointers on intellectual property, and also about the business idea itself, and some areas of opportunity?

Jason what can you tell me about the company structure?
Each business entity has different tax implications. The best example I can give you would be an S-Corporation. This type of structure falls under different tax brackets. For instance, any income between $75,000 and $100,000 will have a tax rate structure of about 34% plus 13.750.
On a different note, for a small business owner a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) is the best option for a many reasons; the main reason, and also the simplest if that you can't get sued if you have limited liability.

What's your take on the business name?
Ideally you will have dba (doing business as) on the name. For instance, you can be "Friendly Corp. dba Home Novelties and Decor. Depending on the structure the name will have variations and you have to make sure not to use the wrong words when spelling out the acronym. For example if you say Limited Liability Company instead of Limited Liability Corporation it could change the whole meaning on a contract. This is a common mistake.

What is the best way to protect copyrighted material? And how can you make sure is not being used by someone else?
It is extremely difficult to monitor such action. For an online business the best thing to do is to come up with a unique logo that is so unusual no one will be able to impugn on it. For example, no one could trademark a domain name such as EBay1 or AmazonX.

What is your professional opinion about the business idea?
When you seek legal advise from a professional they will want to know what you want to do? Why do you think your business idea is unique and innovative? Thousands of online businesses fail and only the strongest survive by virtue of incorporating a catchy name (i.e. Amazon). Your business name is too long and wordy. Think about another business with a long name such as Bed Bath & Beyond and you will see your business name does not have the same tone. Ask yourself why. If you do not have a catchy name you will spend thousands of dollars on marketing just to have a degree of brand awareness.

Industry Liabilities

Hello Teammates. Below are the articles and cases I chose to discuss today:
The first one is entitled "The Sophia Stewart wins the Matrix copyright infringement case"
I know the title is pretty self explanatory but I chose to comment on this one is because it is amazing to me that a multi-million dollar production such as the Matrix Saga would have copyright issues. The Plaintiff claims that the movie was based on her a manuscript called "The third Eye" which she copyrighted back in the early 80's (Bhatt, 2009). What I find so amazing about this case is that one would think studios such as Warner Bros would have a set of amazing entertainment law attorneys looking after important details like this. The court obviously concurred with the woman claim since there was a judgment in her favor but this comes to show you this type of litigation can last for years. Our reading show that the court decision will boil down (in many cases) to whether or not there are enough similarities between the original and alleged infringed material.

This video clip is called "Chris Knight's Copyright Infringement Case Resolved". According to this video clip a man by the name Chris Knight received a copyright infringement for posting a You Tube videoThe man produced a video for a school campaign and posted it on You Tube. He received a copyright infringement take down notice for posting a clip of his commercial from the VH1 show. This was after seeing his commercial on the VH1 web job 2.0. According to the video he responded to these claims with a counter notice and did some research as to what he needed to do on a situation like this. His video was restored and no further charges where filed by either party. The action by You Tube turned out to be a mistake since they thought that this man took a video a company produced and uploaded it to You Tube when it was the other way around (Anonymous, 2007). Now litigation for infringement can lead to all kinds of penalties and restitution and Chris Knight chose not to pursue and added he did not mind them using his material. I think in this case the fact the he did not press any charges was very lucky because if he can prove this is his own material he could be in for a hefty settlement.

The last article is a trademark infringement Red Bull sued a company that produced an energy drink call bull fighter. Red bull claimed that the similar packaging and similar logo was misleading customers into believing the product was manufactured by Red Bull and therefore it offers same benefits as a Red Bull product. The court ruled in favor of Red Bull concluding the other competitor intentionally took advantage of Red Bull image for profit (Ameinfo, 2010). In my opinion, this is a perfect example of how trademarks can protect your business from infringement. The company was able to win this case because it took the time protect its intellectual property and now it may be entitle to a huge amount of royalties depending on the court’s ruling.

Best Practices

This class provided a great deal of information on artist, and product management, and how the two come together as one in the road of building an artist image. I learned that as an artist manager you are a full-time multi tasker the artist is virtually depending on to succeed in the entertainment industry. The link that I detected between the artist and product management, and the one that made the most sense to me was the product endorsement. “ Product endorsement involves the artist name, and likeness being directly connected with a specially manufactured product line” (Frascogna, Hetherington, 2004, page 174).

So although there are many best practices to choose from, I decided to address the ones that I feel I will be able to use in the future. There is no particular order of importance as they are all useful tools for anyone in the business:

· When taking up the task of managing an artist you should always have a clear understanding of the responsibilities you have as detailed in the contract. This is something I can use in the future if I do get the chance to manage a versatile artist such as Prince Cat-Eyez.

· Along the same lines of the above paragraph I believe that as an artist manager you must always go over all the details in the contract, and have a professional draw up the contract to ensure that all the legal language is clear to all parties to avoid conflict in the future. This is something that I can definitely use in the future to protect myself against liability, and in the event of a lawsuit I will have the tools to have a favorable judgment in court. The varied nature of relationships makes it difficult to draw general provisions but every contract will have certain key terms in common (Frascogna, Hetherington, 2004).

· In terms of product management I believe that is always a best practice to have a specific goal you are trying to accomplish with the launching of a new product. Will the goal be a short-term goal or a long-term goal? This is something I can definitely use now and in the future since I am working on a home based business that involves a website I am promoting that has all kinds of home products. Research should always be present to determine the market conditions including, buying trends, demographics, location, and such.

· The best practice when it comes to marketing I product is diversification. The purpose I see behind it relates to new channels that come up everyday to reach the consumer; this will affect not only how he or she views a product but also even how he or she will purchase it. In the home business I am trying to launch this is a very important tool I will be using to reach new consumers.

These best practices are just a sample of the huge amount out there that can vary based on need, channel of distribution, market, and much more. As a artist/product manager this is an ongoing process that should only improve over time.

Project Management Interview

For this particular assignment I chose to interview a friend, and role model of mine. His name is Tomas John Sullivan who has a strong background as a project manager. Tomas, hereafter refer to as Tom, has worked for companies such as Springer Miller Systems, which is a computer software company. His track record shows skill diversity that includes project management, front office manager, customer service, and employee development.

1. What is the first thing you do when you prepare to start a project? The first thing I do is to take a look at the agenda. Verify if I have the strongest experience and knowledge to handle every aspect of the operation. In the event that I do not, I would immediately reach out to my network channels.

2. Along those lines, how do you start accessing that network? I would outline what I needed to have done in advance. The very next step is to contact the department I knew I was going to get feedback from because I find that if I talk to this party in advance I would get all the information, and assistance needed for the project.

3. Do you delegate responsibility? Absolutely, one of the things that I dealt with in the past was peer training as part of the project. Delegating responsibility would provide trainees with on-the-job experience but you have to give very detailed instructions. This just one example though.

4. Did you manage your own deadlines or did you have set deadlines most of the time? If you did how did you meet them? We had customer deadlines, which is what I always shoot for. However, I had my own deadlines to ensure I exceeded expectations which, I accomplished 98% of the time.

5. Do you always have a back up plan and how does it work? You always have to have a back up plan. Every project is different but the one thing they all have in common is that instructions, specifications, and in the case of software configurations, can change at anytime. You just have to be prepared for anything.

6. Are budgets something you deal with? Most of the projects I handled had a set budget so I did not have to negotiate. However, sometimes budgets can be tight and this is when you go back to the client to reevaluate.

7. How do you accomplish goals through people? You provide feedback; give positive criticism by using positive words. You also make sure they know they will get credit for their contribution to the project.

8. What do you think makes a good project manager? To me it’s very simple; a good project manager is someone who does not make assumptions. A good manager researches, evaluates, and communicates.

Deal Making Oprah Style

For this particular assignment I decided to reach out to an Icon a pillar to her community. I thought this time I would think outside the box. I became a member to Oprah.com. I posted a question on the main board and requested tips on deal making focused on the topics pertaining to this assignment. On a quick note, I was very impress on how easy was to join this online community and the comfortable environment in which members navigate through the different features. No I did not get to talk to Oprah herself (I should be so lucky).

Anyway, while awaiting a response I did some research on the website and learned that Oprah has some favorite authors and some happen to be big on deal making. For instance, I found her review on a book by Daniel Shapiro and Roger Fisher, which is a practical guide to deal making no less.

The book by these outstanding authors present a very basic view of the 5 basic humans desires that include appreciation (feeling valued and appreciated), affiliation (feeling a connection as a result of the negotiation), autonomy (freedom to make decisions), status (having a sense of respect), and finally a fulfilling role (simply feeling fulfilled).

Oprah’s position in deal making in relation to this needs is that these factors have to have a place on both sides of the negotiation, the more each of these needs is satisfied the more successful the negotiation will be (Oprah, 2010).

Oprah (2010) gives a brilliant example on deal making which she describe quite succinctly.

Yes, sure, we make deals all day long: I hold the door for you; you let me step onto the escalator first. A colleague asks you to proof read her report; she says something nice about you to the teacher. Think about it: When was the last time you looked at the price of a carton of milk in the grocery store and decided to try getting it for less? If you are like me, never. Haggle over the cost of a cab ride, or a dental visit? I’d rather have a root canal. (Para. 5)

So this point of view was very interesting and useful to me. I found that the context of the article was in alignment with our book for the class. This to me is very reassuring since Oprah is one of the most successful businesswomen in the country; actually her and Dolly Parton.

Regarding the best alternative to negotiate an agreement (BATNA) it's believe that BATNA has a great chance to increase negotiation power. The reasoning behind this concept is very basic and it boils down to whether or not you know all the possible alternatives to close a deal and their potential outcomes. It is a safe way to accept or decline alternatives that will directly affect your business (Spangler, 2003).

Now BATNA is not always as easy as you would want it. I experience many situations in the workplace where I needed to negotiate with management but while I was looking for the ethical thing to do for an associate they would throw politics into the mix and a lot of times I relinquish the responsibility to make the decision to my immediate supervisor because I did not agree with the outcome and felt it was not fair across the board. For example, if an associate would dispute a call I graded.

Management on site would dispute with me because they worried about their goals and escalate to my manager to get call changed to a passing grade. I felt it was unfair that other associates who would not dispute the same call would keep their fail status. This brings me to the issue of dealing with tricks and unethical practices. I do feel this was a situation on which I had to deal with a lot of negative emotions because I felt that the management team was creating procedures and policies for us to follow but then they would negate their own policies and procedures making us look like the bad guys.

The management team was using their leverage with our manager who was very worried about maintaining a good relationship with them. This taught me an important lesson in managing. You cannot always do the ethical thing unless you have the support from your immediate management team and you can only make the best of the situation

Disney's "It's tough to be a bug"

For this assignment I decided to do something that was fun and very much related to the entertainment field and company I am targeting as a potential employer. I have the privilege to know someone who works on crowd control at Disneyland and California Adventure resorts in Anaheim CA. His name is Tom J. Sullivan. The reason I wanted to see the park from a cast member perspective is because I would like to get a job as a project manager running on of the shows or assisting on ride supervision at this world renown resorts.

The list for the day included the “Is Tough to Be a Bug” show, the Pixar Parade, and the new addition to California adventure, “Electronica”. My main goal was to learn about crowd control and why Disney runs things they way they do. The first thing that Tom pointed out was how important crowd control was handled. If you ever have the chance to go here you will see that the park is designed from day one to accommodate the parade and shows present and to come. The focus is always guest safety and comfort. After the night shows was over Tom pointed out a few things about crowd control

To begin with, a show will take place in a strategically chosen area where guest can enjoy the show but passersby won’t be block and unable to go forward. The crowd control cast member setup ropes within with watching guest will be, and cast members placed on different ends of it will direct guest to continue moving if outside the robe.

Once the show was over we stood by in a corner and I watched the crowd disappearing in a matter of minutes with no problem whatsoever. Another interesting point was the fact that you could enjoy the show no matter where you were standing, right, left, far or close it made no difference.

In a different note, when I saw the “It’s Tough to Be a Bug” show I was amazed at how it involve many of your senses into it. For instance, you can sense smells, the visual is outstanding, and you can feel bugs’ crawling around you so is also palpable. The theater offers a great view from every single row (I saw it twice, once in the front raw and once from the back).
I believe that a job as a project manager will be both challenging and exciting. The responsibility is grand but the rewarding feeling will be priceless. This is the one thought that keep me going and makes me more determined to finish my degree. Be part of this entertainment giant is no easy to accomplish but it will be a lot of fun to try.

Being interested in the entertainment industry I think is more than natural to want to learn about what is happening on that environment and what the trends are. I found an article on Lady Gaga and in it; the focus was how she has broken on record sales and video views. In fact, her first 2 hits reached 5 million sales. Hits such as Poker Face and Just Dance manage to break this record quite recently.

This fact to me is very interesting. I have mentioned in the past, on previous assignments, how the success of today’s artist depends a great deal on downloads. In fact, Lady Gaga has been referred to as the “queen of the downloads”. However, the article emphasizes how she is the first artist whose videos hit an outstanding 1 billion views.

Some of my views on the subject highlight technology and a formula Madonna used back in the 80’s to create her persona. To begin with, technology today has made it easier to view, download, buy, communicate, and more; faster than ever before. Think about a time when teenagers needed to buy records or tapes, or even listen to the radio to enjoy their favorite artist. This is definitely one of the reasons that billion views record was broken. Having said that, I do believe Lady Gaga has earned it hands down.

This brings me to the formula I was talking about. When Madonna came out back in the 80s she was very outrageous. Her music, style, and clothes were so unconventional it became a sensation and has been ever since. Many artists tried to do the same but they failed. For example Cindy Lauper, she was equally outrageous but she failed to reinvent herself soon enough to keep her career going. Lady Gaga is following Madonna’s steps. She reinvents her self with every single, every appearance, and every video.

For someone like who is pursuing a career on entertainment management, it is important to know what is happening today and ask questions like: What sales today?, What do the public want?, How will your product reach the audience?, and such. Central Casting

I chose to research Central Casting located in Burbank California. This organization also has a branch in New Your, NY. This is organization I have consider joining. All you need to join is to fill out an application, the usual documents for employment in the U.S. and a $25 fee. I did some research and found out that the $25 fee is for a photograph that will go on their file, sort of a publicity still they will use to match your looks and features to different parts that may become available for actors. This organization does not require acting experience but it is a plus.

This organization has been around since 1925 and according to their website they are today the largest provider or entertainment industry services and solutions in the U.S. Their services go from complete background casting to payroll services. Their payroll services are provided by the Entertainment Partners, a sort of affiliate. Aside from providing Central Casting with payroll services they also have other products that include accounting systems, budgeting, virtual production office and more.

I found out that in order to become a member and get started if you will, you must download all the forms and fill them out in advance. Their doors are open to candidates only twice a week for 2 hours only. Needless to say you have to be there much earlier in order to be admitted that day.

To put in simple words central casting will match the candidates with the clients, whether is the casting directors, producers and such. Under the product tab in the website you will find casting, payroll and resources.

On reading about their casting terms it appears to be the place for new actors to start their careers The websites emphasizes the need for thousands of background actors most likely for non-speaking part in some instances. This means that the organization helps the actor get his or her foot in the door to start building a reputation on the industry. Thinking logically this would be the best way to start for someone who wants to become a character actor. In the industry being what it is today being a character actor can be a huge deal. This would mean landing parts on TV series, movies and plays. Being a character actor can sometimes immortalize him or her.

A perfect example of a hard working character actor that went down in history is Margaret Hamilton who plays the witch in the Wizard of us. She had already made about 6 pictures for MGM when she landed the role. In watching the Ted.com video on our student website the first thing that caught my attention was the fact that the speaker approach the audience with a sense of humor and charm couple with what appears to be a British accent. The visual material used for this presentation was fun and self-explanatory.

The visual material was just enough to make a point but was not distracting the audience to a point where the speaker would lose their attention. Another factor that made the presentation a success was that the speaker knew the topic and it did not seem like a scripted speech like the famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Don’t give me that look now. Have any of you see the footage of the actual speech. Mr. King hardly ever looked up as if he was reading from a book. Having said that, yes it was very powerful and made history.

Now going back to the visual portion on a speech, I believe that in order for the audience to understand the message an image is conveying it must be as simple as possible, almost as though one is teaching children. Now I will give you the best example I can give. Remember the movie “An Inconvenient Truth”?

If memory serves me, when Al Gore was explaining the reason for global warming he had a sort of animated show where the little sunshine guy came to visit the Earth but the pollution bullies kept him from leaving by knocking him unconscious. Yes this would seem like a video for kids you may say but I understood what he was trying to say.

On a different note, in some of my past classes back when I was pursuing my Bachelors I did get some insight on public speaking. It is amazing to me the amount of information you need to know before the actual event. I am not even talking about the material that you will cover. You see, when you are preparing a speech you need to ask yourself many questions. For instance, ask yourself who is the audience? What is the language that will get through to this audience? What can and can’t talk about when addressing this audience? The list goes on and on.

I had to present many times in school using a PowerPoint presentation and overtime I learn that when speaking to a crowd you should pretend you are talking to an old friend. Be yourself, don’t apologize even if you make a mistake. Use it instead to your advantage and amuse the audience. They will definitely appreciate it.

Along with this posting, and as per the assignment instructions I attached another link that shows what I believe to be a good example. Notice how the speaker begins with remarks about his childhood and delivers the material once the audience is engaged.

Disney's World of Color.

For this assignment I chose to visit California Adventure to watch Disney’s newest show “A World of Color”. This show was like nothing I have ever seen before. Having said that the basic concept of it all reminded me the water show at Bellagio in Vegas.

The first thing that I noticed about the show itself is that Disney can try something new but still stay true to itself. One can still see the Disney signature in all the beloved characters the show presents from beginning to end. I have to say, at first I was expecting a sort of sequel to Fantasmic, one of my favorite shows of all time, but this was a brand new concept.

Having enjoyed the show so much I decided to search some behind-the-scenes information about it. I found an article by Lisa Liddane, which provided some interesting information about some aspects of the show. For the purpose of this blog I will focus on planning, and customer satisfaction.

In an interview with Steven Davison, Linda (2010) inquired about how the ideas originate and the planning that went with it. This was the answer to that question:

Like our other theme parks, we wanted to create a nighttime ‘E-ticket’ destination entertainment experience. The idea was to create a ‘kiss goodnight’ for our guests, a show that would wow and inspire them and leave them with a special feeling and a memory of a lifetime. As w worked on the show over the years some of the show moments changed. After we began testing we realized what worked and what didn’t work. (Para. 3,5)

The article also provided some information on how the images where projected by using mist screens, which are very fine sheets of water created from a high-pressure fountain head (Liddane, 2010). This effect is also used in Fantasmic during a few sequences of the show, which I have seen countless times.

In terms of customer service, I had to opportunity to speak with some of the crowd control people who kindly explained to me how the bay area was strategically built to enjoy the show even before they new the type of show they were creating. Crowd control in the park ensures that all guests who have waited to see the show remain on designated areas and those walking by, do not block exit-designated areas. I paid special attention after I learned this and I stepped aside by the bridge as if waiting for a friend to observe the process after the show was over. Everything went just as clockwork.

I decided to see this show because as a project manager this is exactly the kind of job I would love to have. Working as a project manager supervising a show or a ride at an amusement park such as Disneyland, or even be part or the team creating a show would be just amazing for me. This is a show that I definitely recommend. I am lucky enough to work just a few exits away from these parks and for those who are not I definitely recommend the trip destination as a must-see in Southern California.

The importance of teamwork in my current industry.

In the industry that I currently work in teamwork is a must. In the department that I must recently worked for I was a member of the escalation team. Each of us had specific skills that the average associate did not have. We also had the authority to make decisions on a customer’s account. The importance of teamwork came into place when handling a customer’s issue. For example, if the associate that escalated the call did not provide enough information this would cause a delay in the process and therefore a negative customer experience.

Along the same lines, in my current department, teamwork plays a crucial part. As a lead in the recovery department I must work closely with account managers to determine settlement amounts on delinquent accounts. Open communication between lead and account manager will help determine the best way to settle an account and at the same time assist a customer to start re building their credit.

The best way to put a team together is to match people with similar interests and skills. In my department I select the associates with the highest performance scores to put together the nesting coach team dedicated to train new hires. In this example the idea is to have your best performers teach new associates so they can learn and duplicate best practices.

Technology has provided us with new and easy ways to communicate. Team members have access to outlook for e-mails, team chat, and a lead walking the floor consistently throughout the day. Regular team meetings are setup to address hot topics and questions from the team members to ensure everyone is in the same page. The management team encourages associates to provide feedback on policies and procedures. The changes that take place at Bank of America stems from employee and customer feedback even though it may take a while to implement based on the challenges that change presents.

My new career goal

I am currently taking a class that presented me with some challenges. The biggest challenge was to interview some individuals that have created a name for themselves in their field. By the way, thanks are in order to Max, Joel, and Jermaine.
The more I do the readings and complete the assignments the more interested I become in the entertainment industry. I truly believe I can accomplish something great with this degree. I have had the opportunity to work with some great teammates in previous classes and they're contribution to the team was outstanding.
I know I keep talking about wanting to work for Disney Inc. and I don't mean to be going on and on about it but I am truly excited. It's been a dream of mine for a long time. Although I actually wanted to be a performer but I guess priorities can change.
On the other hand, I do live in L.A., Hollywood is here, the entertainment capital of the world no less. I will have to keep my options open I suppose. A friend of mine just to work for Sony Studios and we also have Warner Bros. around here somewhere. Anyway is 10:00 P.M. and I am dead tire. Nutella and Peanut butter sandwich for dinner.

Interview with Joel

Joel Peisinger, is among other things a music teacher. I have been lucky enough to be his pupil and friend for a number of years. Joel's positive attitude and charisma made him the obvious choice for this interview. He has many students who seek his help when in need for a music, voice, and language lesson. That's right, Joel speaks a number of languages proficiently too. I sought Joel's help once when I was trying to join this choir that required me to learn how to read music. This is when I realized what a fine educator Joel really is. Below is the pleasant conversation I had with Joel.

1. In 3 of 4 sentences can you provide an overview of your teaching background (specially music teaching)?I have taught music for over 30 years, specializing in piano and music theory. I teach both privately and in the school setting. I also teach foreign languages and ESL.

2. What would you say prompt your students to continue with their lessons and/or recommend you to others (whether is teaching styles, a positive attitude, etc)?My students have told me that I have a passion for teaching and that I am particularly good at adapting lessons to the needs of the individual student. My teaching style involves a lot of student participation in the learning process, having students resolve new challenges.

3. What do you think is your most valuable contribution to your students?I feel that I am more of a 'learning coach' than a 'teacher'. I encourage the students to use their minds and skills and learn. In music, practice outside of the lesson setting is more important than the lesson itself.

4. Would you consider yourself a leader and why?I prefer to lead by example and suggestion. I excel at putting things in order and finding efficient ways to accomplish goals.

The clash of the entertainment industry and the Internet.

I found an article on Diigo.com with no author first published in June 15, 2009.

The title of the article was “the entertainment industry plays a sour note online”

I chose this article because I had previously said on another posting that the future of the recording artists, actors, and such lie on the Internet. The article in Diigo says:

Three pillars of the entertainment industry -music, movies, and video games- are facing economic challenges due toe the disruptive influences of digital distribution. The music industry has knocked off balance by the emergence of MP3 in the late 1990s and has not recovered. (Para. 1)

This is further proof that technology can bring not only benefits but also challenges. For instance, I previously pointed out how some of today’s recording artists relay on downloads sales as much as they do on CD sales. The challenge is obviously financial.

Anyone can go online and buy a download for as little as $1. The same goes for movies. With the economy being what it is today, many times people to see a movie when it comes out on DVD. However, the challenge here is that people can also see these movies online through different channels such as YouTube, Movies.com, and such. Movie rentals have also become more affordable and accessible then ever. For instance, Netflix now allows you to pick a movie right out of the website and play it on TV. Soon, going to a video store or ordering a movie online will be a thing of the past. Technology brings challenges that the entertainment industry need to adjust to if should it want to continue successfully turning a profit. This is where the human factor plays a part. Entrepreneurs in this industry, like any other, should look at how the market changes and customer needs evolve in order to cater to those needs.

My new career goal

This was an eventful week for me. Just find out that the reward for slaving away all those year behind a computer monitor is that some doctor is considering cutting my wrist open to remove a cyst. His word of consolation were and I quote: the problem with these kind of cysts when they develop is that they keep coming back onquote. Isn't that reassuring? Anyway, this week I had the hardest time finishing my homework that included a keynote presentation due today. I was literally doing everything with one hand as I am wearing a splint on my right hand.
So, I have a little update on my last posting. I did some further reasearch on the possibilities that my Business Entertainment Master of Science offer. I found the types of possible jobs and they are awesome. For example, you can be casting director, or a project manager overseeing operation, sound, and overall quality on amusement park rides. I could be great doing this for Disney.
The biggest problem I find is that a lot of companies today want you to have not only the degree but also the on-the-job experience. How will I ever overcome that unless someone out there is willing to give the opportunity without enduring a salary cut due to lack of experience?
Anyway, I have set the goal and there is no turning back. I must stop now. I can already feel my wrist pulsating.

I had the pleasure to interview a fellow classmate and outstanding entrepreneur Jermaine Deshields.

Jermaine DeShields has always been influenced by music since the day he was born. He has been in dance groups, sung in choirs, and played in bands. He was born in Tacoma, Washington on February 20, 1985. He graduated at Bethune Cookman University with a BA in music technology. During that time, he worked in recording studios, such as Audio Logic located in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he learned and crafted his recording skills as well as his production skills. He also studied piano while at Cookman and now works at a church in Stone Mountain, Georgia as a musician. He is currently the CEO of Black Congress Music Group, which is a production group that he started in college, and is building his own recording studio right in Atlanta, Georgia.

1. In a few words describe the nature of your business? Black Congress Recording Studio was built to allow people who can’t afford to go to a major recording studio but still get professional quality. We do almost every genre so anyone is welcome. Not only do we offer studio time but also we do flyers, CD duplication, web design, and vocal lessons.

2. In a few words describe the nature of your business? Because this business is still new and in its growing phase, we have time to shape and mold our services to fit the customers needs. The fact that we do all types of genre helps us grab more customers because we do know that people do other genres then rap. We also offer vocal lessons and web design which makes us different from most recording studios who just offer studio time.

3. How do you determine market trends and customer changing needs? After a session, we have the customer tell us about their experience they had with us, and what we could do to make things better. We also randomly talk to people at music events and ask them what they look for in a studio. When then try to apply the information, which helps us satisfy our customers the best that we can.

4. Where do you see your business in the next 5 years? In 5 years, I see our company in a new building because we are working out of my apartment right now. I also see us allowing out of town clients to be able to stay as long as they need to at the studio. That means that we will have rooms for such a situation. I really see us being one of the top recording studios because we have the talent and the drive.
