Color Palette: Gray and Orange Bedrooms

Gray and Orange: Vibrant Intelligence
The color orange combines the passionate energy of red and the happiness of yellow. Orange embodies creativity, fun, adventure, and excitement and gray is the perfect pairing to cool down this vibrant hue. I collected some examples of these two colors working together in perfect harmony.

Uh-oh. You've probably guessed by now that I love upholstered headboards, especially ones with contrasting welting or nailhead trim. In the example blow the orange upholstered bed really pops against the steel gray walls. The space is further enhanced with fabrics in contrasting black & white. Notice the greek key and check patterned fabrics on the throw and bolter pillows and the zig zag pattern on the area rug. The window treatments and bedding are tied together with grossgrain ribbon trim.

In this bedroom, a lighter gray is used on the walls and bedding, while the use of orange is limited to the side chair and the coral print pillows. Note the desk painted in a cool aqua blue color which is complimentary to this shade of orange.

This modern bedroom with an asian flair brings orange into the space via the throw pillows and chaise lounge. A warm, taupy gray is added to the walls. Orange can also be seen in the coordinating fabric on the roman shades and bolster pillows. Black crown molding in the trey ceiling accentuates the architecture and also ties into the fabric used on the window treatments and bedding.

Here's a great example of a mix-use space. This nursery must also function as a guest bedroom, therefore the sophisticated palette of gray and orange is used to keep the room from looking to childish. A chocolaty brown is introduced through the arm chair, lamp shade, and upholstered headboard to bring more warmth into the space. The argyle wall treatment provides a preppy focal point.

Gray and Turquoise - Timeless Tranquility

Turquoise is the color of communication, self-awareness and initiative. Like the color of the waters surrounding the Caribbean islands, colors like cyan, aquamarine, and turquoise have the power to relax and refresh the body and mind. Paired with atmospheric quality of gray, turquoise invokes the spirit of a secluded and peaceful oceanside retreat. Below are some amazing examples of how well these two colors work together in bedrooms.

I like this bedroom because it is unapologetically girly. The focal wall features a gray wall with a silver metallic scroll pattern while the arm chair and the bed pillow in deep turquoise provides a jolt of energy. The room is grounded out with a black nightstand. Glam Alert!: Touches of bling can be found in the crystal beaded curtains and the chrome bedside table lamp.

Below is a similar room to the one above, but here's where this room stands out; visual interest is brought into the space with the gold metallic accents in the wallpaper, table lamps, and frames. The tufted headboard ulpholstered in a rich deep teal velvet provides the room with depth and an interesting focal point. The apple green pillow shams brings fresh energy to the space.

The words; light and breezy come to mind when I evaluate the space below. Rich, ornate crown and picture moldings give this room a stately and formal appearance. Painting the picture moldings the same colors as the walls provides texture without too much contrast. A contemporary four poster canopy bed and linens round out the space.

I like the masculine element that is brought into this space with the charcoal gray walls. The light aqua headboard, bedskirt, and chair provide an airy and tranquil quality balancing the dark cozyness of the walls. This room is a study in symmetry with the identical nightstands, lamps, and wall mirrors. Who says you can't take the beach with you! A pair of white-washed nightstands remind me of sandblasted, sun bleached trees lying along the shore.

Here's a room for you commitment-phobes! The room is kept in the gray zone through the fabric covered walls, draperies, bedding, and flooring, while pops of color are brought in with the shams on the bed and the upholstered ottomans under the desk. With a set up like this, the color scheme can be switched out with the seasons at a very minimal cost.

Gray and Purple - Royal Elegance
It's no secret that my favorite color is purple. From my favorite jacket to my attention getting handbag to my choice in bedding, the color has become my personal style statement. Many people find purple hard to work with, let alone wear. Some people even actually take an extreme disliking to the hue (I guess I can forgive them). But just as with anything else in interior design, it's all about how the color is incorporated into a space that makes it more livable to the most adverse homeowners.

The color purple is both red and blue; stimulation and calm. It is most associated with spirituality, royalty and creativity and no surprise here - favored by creative types, eccentrics and young girls. Depending on the undertone, purple can uplift or have a calming effect on the mind and nerves. Pairing this daring color with gray makes it more sleek and refined. Here are some of my favorite examples of Gray and Purple in bedrooms.

Purple as the secondary color
Talk about opulence. I love this room because of it's luxurious choices in silver gray foil wallpaper and ornate bed with a purple velvet headboard. Mirrored night stands add even more glamour to this ultra feminine space.

Here a curvaceous silver-leafed bed, matching nightstand and dresser are the main focal points of this room. Floral print wallpaper in gray and white add dimension to the walls and keep it from looking dull. The room is rounded out with purple accent pillows and a very girlie crystal chandelier. This room is fit for a princess.

I like the room below because the designer took a relatively calm room and livened it up with punches of bold purple in the upholsted bed and area rug and with the lime green wingback chair. No doubt the splurge in the room is the velvety damask fabric in plum on this elegant bed.

Just when you were beginning to notice a trend in my post, here is a diversion; an ultra modern gray and purple bedroom with just a few feminine touches. This room takes a darker gray and pairs it with a purple on the cooler side of the spectrum in the bedding and artwork.

Purple as the primary color
These rooms are not for the faint of heart. The purple is wrapped around you like a warm luxurious blanket fit for royalty. Purple is the overwhelming color used in these spaces and are accented in grays of varying degrees; light and airy, silver opulence, and masculine darker tones.

I like this room because the straight lines of the furniture are balanced by the simple, yet bold graphic floral wall stencils. When a room has a lot of geometric elements such as this boxy furniture, it's always good to bring more organic elements (i.e. florals, natural woods, etc...) to keep the room from looking one dimensional.

I love the art deco inspired wallpaper on the feature wall paired with this plumy purple. The designer really committed to using purple by painting the wall of windows in purple. From the wallpaper to fabrics used on the bed and lounge chairs, everything about this room is luxurious.

I like the eclectic mix in this space. Traditional elements such as the purple damask wallpaper and tufted headboard are paired with a sleek and modern asian inspired white lacquered side table.

In the room below, the designer choose to cover the accent wall in a delicous grape, but calmed it down with simple white, gray and chrome accents. The striped chair rails add visual interest to the walls.

The room below is the perfect compromise if the shared by a man and woman. Masculine elements are brought in with the geometric wallpaper, the dark wood used on the headboard and the black chest of drawers. Feminine elements are added with the crystal lamp and chandelier, the light gray bedding and the room is further softened by the silk drapes.

Okay, so this may not be an image of a bedroom, but it deserves notice because of it's bold use of purple. The wallpaper on the fireplace surround is once again very geometric, but in this case it balances out the ornate silver leafed antique mirror. I love the other touches of glitz such as the polished aluminum side table and mirrored frames on the wall. I imagine this glammed up space as the sitting area of my dream master bedroom.

Gray and Yellow: Sophisticated Happiness
The color yellow embodies optimism, energy, and happiness. Gray is the perfect foil to tone down this admittedly cheery color. Below are some amazing examples of how well these two colors work together in bedrooms.

I personally love this yellow ulpholstered bed against the gray walls. If the walls were left white, I don't think the yellow bed would have as much of an impact, but here the gray walls provide contrast and add depth and dimension to the space. Look at how the designer kept to the warm color family by incorporating the green velvet chair.

In this example, the designer kept the room light and airy by using paler shades of gray and silver metallics on the walls and bedding, while pops of yellow were brought in via the lamps and arm chairs. Graphic black and white pillows and rugs ground the space.

Yellow furniture accents

If you want to go for a more dramatic play on the gray and yellow color palette, consider using the darker more masculine tones of gray with yellow. Here the "almost black" gray walls provide the perfect stage to allow the yellow accents to steal the show. With all the dark colors used in the space, your eye is immediately drawn to the yellow vases and flowers. Visual interest is added to the dark walls by using a patterned wallpaper with metallic accents. The same look can be achieved with stenciling (If you know of any cool stencil sites, let me know).

Here's another light and airy room featuring the gray and yellow color palette. In this room the designer cast both gray and yellow in a supporting role adding it to the bedskirt, throw pillows, artwork, and fabric on the side chair, while white dominates the space. I love the contrast of the soft and hard surfaces; the soft upholstered headboard against the white-washed wall.

Pantone may have picked Honeysuckle as the color for 2011, but it's the color Gray that has my rapt attention. It's the new black and can certainly lend itself to either contemporary or traditional design. But the question on most homeowners minds' is what do you pair it with?

What's so special about Gray you may ask? SensationalColor.com defines it as "the color of intellect, knowledge, and wisdom". It's classic and contemporary at the same time. It's restrained yet elegant, but it can also be sleek and refined. To me, Gray is a perfect neutral.

Naturally in design, lighter Grays paired with pastel colors take on feminine qualities, while darker Grays paired with darker colors bring a more masculine mood to a space. Gray, unless it's in the taupe family, gives off a cool vibe and can be used to cool down a warm palette.

In this new series, I will explore several color combinations featuring gray in a supporting role, while it's better half becomes the "scene stealer".

What's a girl to do when she's on vacation sitting in a hotel room while the kids and the husband have taken over the TVs? Log on to the netbook and create a moodboard inspired by the pending nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton of course.

My inspiration for this room is a well traveled young couple that isn't afraid of experimenting with color. Sure they may be living in the palace, but that doesn't mean they have to decorate it like the Queen Mum. This room has a few modern touches such as the teal sofa with a nod to traditional by bringing in elements such as the tufted chaise and beaded chandelier.

Tips for planning an all girls dessert reception

Several months ago I wrote a blog entry about a dessert reception my church was planning for our pastor's wife. Well I have to say that the event was a great success, with more sweets than my sweet tooth could handle, lots of good conversation and plenty of laughs. We had so much fun we want to turn it into an annual affair!

A dessert reception is a great alternative to a dinner party or hor's doerves party, because you aren't responsible for feeding your guests real food...just a little sumthin' sumthin' to satisfy their sweet tooth. It can be held mid-afternoon long after lunch has settled in their bellies or later in the evening after everyone has had a chance to eat a light dinner.

Here are a few tips to plan your next dessert fest:

1. Let the decor set the tone. We wanted this affair to be a little bit formal, a little bit casual. Linen tablecloths, crystal votive candleholders, decorative cake stands lent an elegant air to the festivities, while whimsical tent cards and funky paper napkins kept the event from being taken too seriously.

2. Save yourself and make it a potluck. Who says you have to do it all yourself? People always want to show off their most prized recipe or one that has been passed down through the generations. Why not ask a few of the attendees if they wouldn't mind whipping up something for the occassion? Most women would be happy to oblige.

3. Use icebreakers to get the conversation flowing. If not all the girls know each other, icebreakers are a great way to get to know one another. We played an icebreaker where the girls had to right down something about themselves no one else knew about, place it in a hat and we all took turns trying to guess who it was. I can't tell you what was said, but let's just say some of the revelations were scandalous!

4. Relax and have fun. Remember it's all about good food, female bonding, and good conversation.

No event comes of without a hitch. We were in a small space with a lot of people and it was 80+ degrees outside. Needless to say, it got hot very quickly and even with the AC set to 60, the room still would not cool down. There's nothing worse than having uncomfortable guests but all it to was one serendipitous look to the ceiling to figure out what the problem was and after a climb atop a bar stool to open the vents, the party moved right along.

I was fortunate enough to be selected by Zavvi Rodaine's editor, Yolanda Smith, to be featured as an up and coming interior designer in Atlanta. I was so excited about the opportunity that I could have fainted. I was so nervous; what in the world did I want people and potential clients to know about me?

Prior to the interview, Yolanda and I spent over an hour talking about how she got started with her website, her mission to bring light to little known interior designers from multi-cultural backgrounds, what made me get into design, etc. and she made me completely comfortable with the process. So much so, that when it came time for the interview, I knew exactly what I was going to say.

Festive tablescapes ideas for an all girls event

Sometimes a girl just needs any old excuse to get together with friends and nosh on sweet treats. This time it's a party with a purpose as my church is having a "Meet & Greet" to get to know our pastor's lovely wife. We decided on a dessert reception to keep the occassion light and festive.

I volunteered myself to help with the decorations and to provide a sweet treat or two for the occassion. Deciding on a theme is tricky; do we pay homage to Fall with bold jewel tones and warm hues or keep it sugary sweet with confectionary pink? How about a little bit of both?

I'm inspired by this image below from Elle Decor that was posted on Apartment Therapy's website last week. Here the design embraces Fall browns, pinks, and oranges with plenty mirror and crystal accents (check out the ultra-femme chandelier). The chocolate brown could easily be incorporated through the tablecloths and placements or maybe even the base for handmade napkin rings. The pink and orange would come into play with the decorations for the candleholders and a really cool paper craft I saw in the Winter 2010 Do It Yourself magazine. The touches of crystal and mirror accents can be brought into the design with the numerous votive cups, vases, and candlesticks I have on hand.

I'm so excited to see how this will turn out! The event is on November 13th so that doesn't leave much time to plan or execute, but I think we can pull it through. I've gotta make a trip to Michael's and the Dollar store this weekend to see what I can find.

Creative wall ideas for kid spaces

It's no secret that children are some of the most creative creatures on this planet. They are not hindered by the limitations we adults often times place on ourselves. So when decorating a child's room, think about giving them a space that will allow their imaginations to run wild.

One of the easiest ways to achieve this goal is through decorative wall treatments. It doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. You can create custom or semi-custom looks with paint, wall decals, wall art and more. Below are some wall treatment ideas, including some of my own, to get your creative juices flowing!

Paint
Paint is one of the cheapest decorating tricks that can provide the most impact to a space. With a couple of rolls of painters tape, a ruler, a laser level, and a smidgen of imagination, you can create one-of-a-kind wall treatments for your child's room. If using more than one color, consider buying the quart size or sample size. That way you don't have to worry about what to do with all that left over paint. It's easier on your wallet and good for the environment, too!

Consider stripes, circles, harlequin, or free-hand designs. If you don't think you have any artistic capabilities, no problem! You can rent a projector to project the image on the wall, trace it, then fill it in with color. You'll amaze yourself with what you're capable of and if you don't like the finished results, paint over it. Just get a second opinion before you do. We adults tend to over criticize ourselves and what we think is "crap" may actually be good.

Wall Decals
The abundance of wall decals on the market today make it super easy to add flair to your kid's space. Many of the wall decals are vinyl which makes them repositionable so if you don't like where you've placed it, just peel and reapply. You can find wall decals at Target, JoAnn's, WhatisBlik.com and many, many more. I found the Eiffel Tower decal I used to decorate Simone and Nadia's room on clearance at World Market.

Wall Art
Have you ever been tempted to buy every single accessory in a children's bedding set, including the wall art? If you have, then consider replacing the coordinated wall art with some of your own. Make customized wall plaques of your child's name or monogram using small canvases and wooden letters. Frame images of your child using scrapbook paper or fabric as the matte. Create shadow boxes and include personal items such as baby's first toy. Websites like Land of Nod, Rosenberry Rooms, and WallNutz have plenty of paintings, murals, and wall decals to choose from.

I'm a sucker for headboards. To me, they set the tone for the bedroom. Upholstered headboards add an instant touch of luxury. I selected one in the "bonnet" style from Bassett Furniture for my master bedroom. From the simplistic to the ornate, upholstered headboards come in endless options.

Many furniture retailers offer ready made headboards; you just order and install, others allow you to select the form and fabric. But if you still can't find the shape or fabric you want, consider having one custom made. Many fabric centers offer this as a service and they can be surprisingly affordable.

Industrial chandelier find at High Point

Here is another great find from High Point. One funky industrial chandelier. The chandelier would work well in a juxtaposition of rustic and modern. Check out the sofas and pillows. It seems that charcoal gray and yellow with a touch of navy are still a hot combination in home design.

Okay this is the look that I have had stuck in my head for the last three years of what my Master Bedroom will look like.

So far I have the luxury bedding, upholstered headboard, dresser, and cool lamps, but I'm still waiting on my mirrored side tables and fabulous chandelier. My color scheme is purple, silver, cream, and black and I'm looking to go darker with the walls to make the room even more dramatic.

I would love to paint my trey ceiling in a high-gloss eggplant to really rev up the glam and drama. If you have to describe my style inspiration for the room, I'd have to say Hollywood

Make Room for Baby

Last Autumn I found out that I was having a baby. Yeaahhhh!!! That meant my family was growing from a party of four to a Party of Five (and yes I went there). The problem was - where was I going to put the little bugger? My oldest daughters were 6 and 4 at the time and there was no way that either one of them was going to share a room with a newborn. Although I have a 4 bedroom house with a bonus room over the garage, my parents and in-laws visit a lot so I needed to keep a guest bedroom at the ready and set up a baby nursery for my son Miles.

So that meant that my girls were going to have to share a room. When I asked Nadia my 4 year old if she wanted to share a room with her older sister Simone, she excitedly responded "Yes!", but when I posed the same question to Simone, who's 6, she replied, "I don't think I would like that very much". How would I get them both behind the idea?

Make Room for Baby

Step 1: Select a bedroom that will accommodate both children. Chances are you have a secondary bedroom that is larger than the others and will have the space and layout to suit your needs. The old guest bedroom just happened to have a huge double window and ample closet space. What more could two girls want?

Step 2: Take measurements of the room to determine if it can handle separate beds or if bunk beds will be needed. If I had to do it all over again, I would have gone with the bunk beds to free up the floor space, but because I had purchased twin beds the year before when they each had their own rooms, I had to work with what I had.

Step 3: Let the children being uprooted by the new baby have an active role in the design of the new room they'll share together. My girls picked the paint colors; pink and purple. I had to say "ixnay" on the Hello Kittly and Disney Princess themes because they are going to be in this room together well into their tweens and I'm not redecorating this room anything soon. The girls finally settled on a Parisian theme that their mother conveniently introducted to them through the Madeline and Fancy Nancy children's books. (It's called "gentle persuasion" :-) ).

Step 4: Let the children participate in decorating the room. Simone and Nadia went with me to Lowes to select the perfect shades of pink and purple. We used Olympic's Low VOC paint in Cotton Candy and Lovely Lilac. I also gave them each a paint roller and allowed them to paint small sections of the wall. Since I was applying a design to the wall to work in their favorite colors, I couldn't just let them go crazy and paint whatever they wanted so I limited them to the space between the tape. It was like asking them to color within the lines with a really large and messy crayon, but hey - that's what clean-up sponges are for, right?

This room is almost finished...just need to add a few finishing touches such as trim for the curtains, decorative throw pillows, a cute little rug, and the piece de resistance; a dazziling chandelier.

Step 5: Get started on decorating the baby's nursery. There are so many options for baby nursery themes, but since the proud papa was excited that he was finally getting his son, I allowed him to pick the theme. And if any of you know my husband, then you know that the theme selected was sports. Now all we need is to find the right bedding and accessories.
