What is Mehndi?

Mehndi is the application of henna as a temporary form of skin decoration in India, Pakistan,Nepal and Bangladesh as well as by expatriate communities from those countries. The wordmehndi is derived from the Sanskrit word mendhikā.The use of mehndi and turmeric is described in the earliest Vedic ritual books. Haldi(Staining oneself with turmeric paste) as well as mehndi are Vedic customs, intended to be a symbolic representation of the outer and the inner sun. Vedic customs are centered around the idea of "awakening the inner light"

We can also define it as "Mehndi (also called Mehandi) is the traditional art of painting the hands, feet or body with a paste made from the powdered, dried leaves of the henna plant (Botanical name : Lawsonia Inermis)" People mix lemon,cofee and tea to produce more dark color.. it is use to dye hair also..

History Of Mehndi

Mehndi body art has been practiced for centuries in the Middle East, India and in some parts of Africa. Though generally mehndi is thought of as a woman's forte, men in all the countries have practiced it as well. Mehndi is the art of creating designs on the skin using henna paste. These designs can be applied in different parts of the body. Traditionally mehndi is applied on the hands and feet. Today as mehndi has become popular in the West mehndi is applied on the upper arms, back, around the belly button and on the hands and feet.

Initially henna was applied in these countries to cool the body in the hot summers. Dots are applied on the palm of the hands of both men and women to cool the body. As time passed the users of henna began drawing patterns, which over a period of time became intricate designs that are popular today. The different cultures gave rise to different style of mehndi and different methods of application. Intricate and fine line designs were developed in Pakistan and India. Geometric patterns and designs became the specialty of Morocco. In Africa bold geometric shapes and patterns became popular. Mehndi patterns are applied with the help of gold rods, plastic cones, plastic bottles with tips, syringes and toothpicks etc. Today mehndi art has become a means of expression for the Mehndi artists.

Realistic Rainy Window Effect

In this tutorial we’ll show you how to make a realistic rainy window effect using basic Photoshop tools, filters, brush and layer styles.

This is what we ‘ll be creating:

Model

Step 1

Open your model picture. You can use your own image. I crop this picture to make a better effect (for this tutorial purpose). Hit C to active this tool and grab a square around the part you want to take then hit one button to complete this action.

Step 2

Press W to active Magic Wand Tool with settings below. Use Magic Wand Tool to click inside white background of this picture :

Hit Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+I to inverse this selection and we have selection for model

Right click this selection, choose Layer via Copy and we have a new layer with extracted model. Name this layer as “model”:

Step 3

Duplicate model layer we have “model copy”. Go to Filter-Blur-Gassian Blur and set radius as 1,5 px (it depends on the sharpness of your photo):

Add layer mask and use soft black brush with opacity and flow about 50% to make some parts of model more visible:

Step 4

I want to change color of model so I use a Curves layer. Choose Layer-New adjustment layer-Curves:

I use a Hue/Saturation layer to reduce red and magenta tone of model:

Step 6

Hit Cmd/Ctr/Shift+N to make a new layer. Choose Edit-Fill with color #605a4b:

Lower opacity of this layer to 30%:

Make a new layer fill again but with color #043157 and opacity 40%:

It’s only my favorite color choice and you’re free to make color you like.

Step 7

In this step we will make a glass window effect. Create a new layer with method used above. Set foreground and background color to white ( #ffffff) and #3a4755.

Go to Filter-Render-Clouds:

We have :

Choose Filter-Distort-Glass:

Change the mode to Soft light 80%:

Add layer mask and use soft black brush with opacity and flow 40% to blur glass effect on model face, hands:

Step 8

In some next steps I’ll show you how to make realistic rain drops. Make a new layer on the top and set foreground color to white. Hit B to active Brush tool, choose size with 3 px then press F5 to make settings of this brush as shown below:

Use brush to paint over the picture:

Name it “small drops”. Right click this layer, choose Blending Options:

Lower opacity of this layer to 50%:

Step 9

Create a new layer and use white brush with same settings but increase brush size to 9px. Paint on the pic as shown below:

Apply layer style like in step 8 but add more Drop Shadow effect:

Change opacity to 30%:

Step 10

To make rain traces on window, I use white brush with changed settings:

Make some random traces on window:

Apply same layer style done in previous step ( Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Bevel and Emboss) but set opacity to 20%:

The model hands pulsing the window so them need to be clearer, darker, more visible. Come back to model layer, make selection for model hands as shown below (don’t need to be so precise with these selections):

Copy them into a new layer (right click, choose Layer via Copy like we did in step 2) and place this layer on the top. Call it “hands”:

Lower opacity to 10% and use layer mask to hide the edges of them:

Click Filter-Distort-Ripple:

Then Filter-Stylize-Diffuse:

Choose a Hue/Saturation layer above hands layer with Clipping Mask options:

Down the lightness to -100

Step 14

To darken the hands more, I use a new layer (non-Clipping Mask) and brush with color #3a4755. Paint on right hand with brush 100% opacity and 30% for the left (as it’s darker than the right already). Put the mode as Soft light 50%:

To change the light of picture, I use Gradient layer. Make a layer and hit G to choose Gradient Tool (with default color : black and white) with settings below:

Drag a line from bottom right to top left:

Change the mode to Soft light 100%:

Step 16

To change color and contrast of picture, I add a Curves layer:

I use a Gradient Map layer:

Set the mode of this Gradient Map layer to Soft light 100%:

To increase a bit contrast, I use Brightness/Contrast:

Photoshop Fold and Crease Effect

In this Photoshop Effects tutorial, we'll learn how to add folds and creases to a photo as if it had been folded and unfolded like a map!

We'll use guides and selections to create the folded sections of the image, some gradients, a layer blend mode and one of Photoshop's filters to add highlights and shadows, and we'll give the fold lines a worn out look to them using a custom brush!

Here's the image I'll be using for this tutorial:

And here's what the final result will look like:

Step 1: Add A New Blank Layer

Let's begin by adding a new blank layer to our document. Click on the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. Nothing will happen in the document window because our new layer is blank, but if we look in the Layers panel, we see the new layer, which Photoshop has named "Layer 1", sitting above the original image on the Background layer:

Step 2: Turn On The Rulers

We're going to drag out some horizontal and vertical guides to help us out, and to do that, we first need to have Photoshop's rulers turned on. Go up to the View menu in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen and choose Rulers Or, press Ctrl+R (Win) Command+R (Mac) on your keyboard to turn the rulers on with the short cut:

Go to View > Rulers.

The rulers will appear along the top and left of the document window:

Step 3: Drag Out Two Vertical Guides

Click anywhere inside the ruler on the left, then with your mouse button still held down, begin dragging towards the right. You'll see a vertical guide emerge from the ruler. Drag the guide to roughly a third of the way across the image, then release your mouse button to place the guide. Don't worry about getting the placement exactly right. As long as it's close to being one third of the way across, you're good:

Click in the left ruler and drag out a vertical guide a third of the way across the image.

Click again inside the ruler on the left and, again with your mouse button still held down, drag out a second vertical guide, placing this one roughly two thirds of the way across the image:

Step 4: Select The Rectangular Marquee Tool

Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the Tools panel, or press the letter M on your keyboard to quickly grab it with the short cut

With the Rectangular Marquee Tool selected, drag out a selection outline around the first section (the one in the top left of the image):

Select the Gradient Tool from the Tools panel, or press the letter G on your keyboard to select it with the shortcut (the keyboard shortcuts for the Rectangular Marquee Tool and the Gradient Tool will come in handy in a moment):

Step 7: Select The Black, White Gradient

With the Gradient Tool selected, right-click (Win) / Control-click (Mac) anywhere inside the document window to quickly open Photoshop's Gradient Picker, then select the Black, White gradient by double-clicking on its thumbnail (third thumbnail from the left, top row). Double-clicking on the thumbnail will select the gradient and close you out of the Gradient Picker:

Step 8: Draw A Black To White Gradient Across The Selection

With the Gradient Tool in hand and the Black, White gradient chosen from the Gradient Picker, click and drag out a black to white gradient inside the selection. I'm going to drag mine diagonally from the bottom left corner to the top right corner:

Step 9: Draw A Selection Outline Around The Next Section

Switch back to the Rectangular Marquee Tool by pressing the letter M on your keyboard, then drag out a selection around the next section (the one in the top center):

Step 10: Draw A Black To White Gradient Across The Selection In A Different Direction

Press the letter G on your keyboard to quickly switch to the Gradient Tool, then click and drag out a black to white gradient inside this second selection. Make sure you draw this one in a different direction, though, so both gradients look different. This will add variety to our lighting effect, as we'll see shortly:

Step 11: Repeat Steps 9 And 10 For The Remaining Sections

We need to do the same thing for all six of the sections, but it's just a matter of repeating the same couple of steps for each one. First, press the letter M on your keyboard to switch to the Rectangular Marquee Tool and drag out a selection outline around the section, then press the letter G on your keyboard to switch to the Gradient Tool and draw a black to white gradient inside the selection, drawing each gradient at a different angle to add variety. When you're done, you should have a gradient across each section. Press Ctrl+D (Win) / Command+D (Mac) on your keyboard after you've drawn the final gradient to remove the selection outline around it:

Step 12: Hide The Rulers And Guides

We don't need the rulers or guides anymore, so to hide the rulers, either go back up to the View menu at the top of the screen and reselect Rulers, or press Ctrl+R (Win) / Command+R (Mac) on your keyboard. To hide the guides, go up to the View menu, choose Show, then choose Guides, or press Ctrl+; (Win) / Command+; (Mac) to turn them off from the keyboard:

Go to View > Show > Guides to hide the guides when they're visible on the screen.

Step 13: Change The Blend Mode To Soft Light

Go up to the Blend Mode option in the top left corner of the Layers panel and change the blend mode of the gradients layer from Normal (the default setting) to Soft Light:

This turns our gradients into a series of highlights and shadows in the image, and we can start to see our "folds and creases" effect taking shape:

Step 14: Apply The Plastic Wrap Filter

To bring out the fold lines a bit more, we'll use Photoshop's Plastic Wrap filter. Go up to the Filter menu at the top of the screen, choose Artistic, then choose Plastic Wrap:

Go to Filter > Artistic > Plastic Wrap.

This opens the large Filter Gallery set to the Plastic Wrap filter. The options for the filter are found at the top of the right column. Set the Highlight Strength to 20 and Smoothness to 15 by dragging both sliders all the way to the right. Then set the Detail option to somewhere between 5 and 10. The higher you set the Detail value, the tighter the effect will appear around the fold lines, so keep an eye on the large preview window on the left as you drag the slider and choose the value you think works best. I'm going to set my Detail value to 10:

Click OK when you're done to close out of the Filter Gallery. The fold lines now appear a bit stronger:

Step 15: Add Another New Blank Layer

Click on the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel to add another new blank layer, this time above the gradients layer:

Step 16: Select The Brush Tool

To enhance the effect even further, let's add some wear and tear lines to the folds, and we'll do that using a custom brush. Select the Brush Tool from the Tools panel, or press the letter B to select it with the keyboard shortcut:

Step 17: Choose A Spatter Brush From The Brush Picker

With the Brush Tool selected, right-click (Win) / Control-click (Mac) anywhere inside the document window to quickly open the Brush Picker and choose the Spatter 59 pixels brush by double-clicking on its thumbnail, which will select the brush and close you out of the Brush Picker (if you have Tools Tips enabled in Photoshop's Preferences, you'll see the name of the brush appear when you hover your mouse cursor over the thumbnail):

Step 18: Open The Brushes Panel And Select The Brush Tip Shape Options

Once you've chosen the Spatter brush, press the F5 key on your keyboard to quickly open Photoshop's full Brushespanel and click on the words Brush Tip Shape in the upper left corner of the panel. Set the Roundness of the brush to around 10%, then increase the Spacing option to 50%:

Step 19: Select The Shape Dynamics Options

Along the left side of the Brushes panel is a column listing various brush option categories (Shape Dynamics, Scattering, Texture, etc). Before we go any further, make sure none of these categories are selected by unchecking any of them that have a checkmark beside their name.

Then, click directly on the words Shape Dynamics at the top of the left column to view the various Shape Dynamics options in the main part of the Brushes panel. Make sure you click directly on the words "Shape Dynamics". Don't click in the checkbox beside the words, otherwise you'll just turn the category on without gaining access to any of the actual Shape Dynamics options.

Increase the Size Jitter value to 100% by dragging the slider all the way to the right, then set the Angle Control option to Direction. Don't close out of the panel just yet, we still have one more category to select:

Step 20: Select The Dual Brush Options

Click directly on the words Dual Brush in the column along the left to switch over to the Dual Brush options in the main part of the Brushes panel. These options allow us to blend a second brush in with our original one. Select the Spatter 27 pixels brush by clicking on its thumbnail, then change the Mode at the top of the Brushes panel to Multiply. Finally, increase the Size of the brush to around 55 px and the Spacing to around 55%. When you're done, press F5 on your keyboard to close out of the Brushes panel:

Choose the Spatter 27 pixels brush, set the Blend Mode to Multiply, Size to 55 px and Spacing to 55%.

Step 21: Set Your Foreground Color To White

We're going to want to paint with white, and Photoshop uses the current Foreground color as the brush color, which means we need to make sure our Foreground color is set to white before we start painting. The easiest way to do that is to first press the letter D on your keyboard, which will reset the Foreground and Background colors to their defaults (making the Foreground color black and the Background color white). Then press the letter X on your keyboard to swap the colors, which makes the Foreground color white. You can see the current Foreground and Background colors in thecolor swatches near the bottom of the Tools panel:

Step 22: Paint Across The Fold Lines

If you're working inside the floating document window view as I've been doing so far, press the letter F on your keyboard to switch over to the first of Photoshop's fullscreen modes, which will make this next step easier (pressing F a couple more times will cycle you through the fullscreen modes and then back to the floating document window mode). Rather than painting brush strokes manually, click with your brush directly above the first vertical fold line (the one on the left). Don't click and drag, just click:

Then, hold down your Shift key and click directly below the same fold line. Photoshop will automatically draw a brush stroke in a straight line between the two points you clicked on. You'll see a thin white brush stroke running down along the fold line, giving it a worn out appearance:

If the angle or position of your brush stroke looks a little off, simply press Ctrl+Z (Win) / Command+Z (Mac) on your keyboard to undo it, then try again. To increase the intensity of the wear and tear effect, add a few more brush strokes over top of the first one. Changing the size of your brush with each stroke will add more variety. Pressing the left bracket key ( [ ) on your keyboard will make the brush smaller. Pressing the right bracket key ( ] ) will make it larger. Just click above the fold line, then hold down your Shift key and click below the fold line to add each new brush stroke:

Repeat the same steps with the second vertical fold line to paint a few brush strokes across it, then do the same thing with the horizontal fold line, clicking with the brush to the left of the line, then holding Shift and clicking to the right of the line. If it helps, you can turn the guides back on by pressing Ctrl+; (Win) / Command+; (Mac) on your keyboard which may make it easier to line things up. Press the keyboard shortcut again to turn them back off. Here's my image after adding the brush strokes across all three fold lines:

Step 23: Lower The Layer Opacity (Optional)

Finally, if the brush strokes look a little too white and intense, you can fade them more into the image by lowering the layer's opacity. You'll find the Opacity option directly across from the Blend Mode option at the top of the layer's panel. By default, opacity is set to 100%. I'm going to reduce mine to 70%:

Lower the layer opacity to reduce the intensity of the brush strokes if needed.

And with that, we're done! Here is my final "folds and creases" effect:

Comic Book Effect in Photoshop

To create a Comic Book Effect in Photoshop we have to mix all sort of filters and blend them together to obtain that well known sketch effect. You can of course use a simple Graphic Pen Filter or a Halftone Pattern Filter, but if you want to obtain a more complex and realistic comic effect you have to use more than one Photoshop Filter.

And to complete the image we'll use Comic Brushes and/or add text using a Comic Font. The Old Paper Texture used in the final step helps us obtain that authentic vintage look.

Take a look of the before and after preview image. So you will get a picture on what we'll be creating in this tutorial.

So let's star by opening the School Girl in Photoshop. Beside the fact that is a really good photo, this image has all the elements of a comic book image: a cool School Girl character, action/motion and a good balance between the focus element and the background.

The first conclusion is that not all the images can be transformed with good results in a comic effect image so you have to choose carefuly.

Duplicate the Girl Layer and change the Brightness/Contrast Balance. You will have to adjust the parameters two times as shown in the image:

Duplicate the previous layer and desaturate the image. Go Image, Adjustments and choose Desaturate.

Photoshop Stamp Filter

Duplicate the Desaturate layer and go to Filter, Sketch menu and choose Stamp Filter. It is very important to set the Foreground color Black and the Background color White. Set the Blending Mode of this layer to Color Burn 100%.

Photoshop Halftone Pattern Filter

Duplicate the Stamp Layer and go to Filter, Sketch and choose Halftone Pattern Filter with the following settings. Set the Blending Mode of this layer to Color Burn 100%.

Photoshop Graphic Pen Filter

Copy the Desaturate Layer and add Graphic Pen Filter that you will find in the same Sketch Menu. This Photoshop Filter has three settings: the Stroke Lenght, the Light/Dark Balance and theStroke Direction. I will apply this filter two times with different settings like shown in the image. Set the Blending Mode of this layer to Darken 100%.

Now duplicate the original Girl Layer and add again Graphic Pen Filter this time with another settings. Change again the Blending Mode of this layer to Darken 100%.

After applying all these filters our image should now look like this:

Photoshop Photocopy Filter

Duplicate the original Girl Layer again and apply the Photocopy Filter found in the same Sketch category of Photoshop Filters. Change the Blending Mode of this layer to Color Burn 100%.

Maybe you wonder why so many Filters, well the last one for example, adds a nice black contour to the girl so that it looks even more like a hand drawn sketch. You can adjust the contour lines of thePhotocopy Layer by using the Brush Tool and a black 5px round brush.

So we have use almost all the Sketch Filters so you might wonder who is next? The answer is Halftone Pattern again but in a different way. So create a new layer above all the other layers and fill it with white color. Apply Halftone Pattern filter, Pattern Type Circle, like in the image:

Change the Blending Mode of this layer to Color Burn 100%.

Sunburst Photoshop Brush

If you want to add another cool effect you can even add a Sunburst Brush in another layer. Use white for the sunburst color and apply Halftone Pattern Filter with the same settings used in the previous step. Make sure the sunburst has the center in the center of the image.

Change the Bending Mode of the Sunburst Layer to Linear Light 55%.

Go to the Sunburst Layer and Create a Layer Mask by pressing the Add Layer Mask button from the Layers Tab. Make sure you are in the Layer Mask by pressing the Layer Mask Thumbnail. Use a soft round brush to draw the Girl shape with color black.

Add a similar Mask Layer to the previous Halftone Pattern Layer (circle pattern).

Color Effects

Create a new layer above all the other and call it Color Layer. With the help of Brush Tool, paint over the image where you want to add color, it's entirely up to you. Use more than one layer and set the Blending Mode to Multiply and/or Overlay with different opacities.

Comic Book Font

For the final touches add some comic book sound effect "Bang" using this Comic Book Font. Add also the date in the bottom left of the image using the same Comic Font.

It is really a matter of taste, you can search the internet for inspiration or you can use one of these free Comic Brushes.

Vintage Effect

Add a new layer and call it Border Layer. Fill it with white color. Set the Fill to 0%. Add a Stroke, inside 10px white. Add an Inner Glow, normal 100%, black, size 15 px, range 1%.

To give vintage looks copy an Old Paper Texture in a new layer and set the Blending Mode to Multiply 60%. You can obtain a more realistic look by adding some Stain Brushes. And you're done, hope you like it!
