So far this year Wheels for Charity have attended a few events not as many as this time last year but we have had a far better results in our fund raising efforts.

We attended Truckfest as a Club and started handing out pre-paid envelopes for Phones for Heroes as well as collecting for the Forces Children's Trust.

After Truckfest we went along to visit our good friends Rewaco Trikes UK at the National Motor Home show. At the event we handed our Gala Tent Brouchers with our Promo code and also Phones for Heroes Pre-paid envelopes.Here are the photos from that event.

We also did the same at this years BMF when we visited Rewaco Trikes there as well

Our Biggest event to date this year was the Southend Air Festival where we teamed up with our good friends The Marham Veteran's Group,

At this event we took part in 2 ground displays each day of which one was the Sunset Ceremony to the Fallen.

The other display was the K9 display and Forces Children's Trust Tornado GR5 which was built form recycle material by the Marham Group and Piloted by Wheels for Charities own Pilot Flt Lt Tommy Gladstone.

The hole weekend was a great success raising money for the Forces Children's Trust and also we handed out nearly 3000 pre-paid envelopes for Phones for Heroes.

We are back in Southend on the 3rd August for another fundraising event and we will be taking part in ground displays again including the Sunset Ceremony.

Last Wednesday we returned to Southend -on-Sea for South Essex Homes Community Fun Day at Southchurch Park with the Marham Group.

Little Miracles is a parent led support group for families with children that have additional needs/ disabilities based in Peterborough. We run a weekly drop in session at the Honeyhill Children's and Community Centre in Paston every Monday between 1 and 3 where the whole family are welcome to come and chat, play and socialise.

Little Miracles is run by a lovely lady called Micheal King and they have applied for Charity status.From attending some of there events and helping out the families all speak highly of the group and how much they value it.

Truckfest & Thank you to some people

Last weekend Maz Tommy and I attended Truckfest 2011 along with Matt,Tori and the kids as well as Marc & Carol Greening of Peacock Transport.The weather was great and the highly polished trucks came in the the hundreds.
We were there as well as for the club but on a personal note as well and armed with Phones for Heroes Pre-paid envelopes Forces Children's Trust Pots and the Banners as well we set up for the weekend.

The show opened to the public on Sunday but Saturday night as usual there was a Light show and fireworks display for all the competitors and Traders.
Time to relax before Sunday morning when the gate open to the public.

The show as usual had many lovely trucks with art work on and our friends Andy and Tom Scott Custom Paint House were there on Saturday and Monday doing Airbrush art work Demos

The show was International with Trucks in from Holland Germany,Sweden and Our friend Geovanni from Austria.

Geovanni informs me that he now has 50 Trucks on his firm and 16 of them now have art work on.

The Guinea Pigs sing there Anthem

At the start of last year in Febuary I had the great hounour of meeting and going on a trip with the Guinea Pig club.

For those of you who do not know who they are here is a bit about them and at the bottom is there Anthem.

In 1936, the Government decided that war was inevitable. The lessons learnt during the Spanish Civil War was proof that that the next war would be mainly aerial. As a result, the casualties in the air would produce many airmen in need of treatment for burns.

Therefore the Emergency Medical Service was set up with hospitals out of London selected to deal with this anticipated problem.

One of them was the Queen Victoria Cottage Hospital (as it was then known) and a Mr. A. McIndoe (later to become Sir Archibald McIndoe) was appointed to take charge. He arrived on the 4th of September 1939 and was the driving force towards the creation of the Burns Centre.

In 1940, when The Battle of Britain began, Hurricane and Spitfire pilots, suffering from burns were taken to what was to become the world famous hospital in East Grinstead. On the 20th of July 1941, some of these airmen were passing their time chatting in a newly erected hut at the hospital. One of them suggested forming a Club. Someone suggested the name “Guinea Pig Club”. Burns and reconstructive surgery was in its infancy. It was recognised by the burned airmen that much of the surgery was experimental.

The Club was duly formed with a committee and Mr. McIndoe as its President. The Secretary was a pilot with badly burned fingers, which meant he was excused from writing many letters. The Treasurer was a member whose legs were burned, this ensured he could not abscond with the funds! There were three types of members. Guinea Pigs, who qualified by being a member of an aircrew and had received at least one operation at the hospital. Scientists, Doctors and Surgeons were honorary members The Club’s benefactors were to be known as Friends of the Guinea Pig Club. The Club was really intended to be a drinking club, which would disband after the war. Instead, it grew in strength and through the generosity of many people became financially sound.

Later, as the bombing programme intensified against the industrial heart of Germany, so the emphasis switched from burned fighter pilots to burned bomber crews. In time, these patients represented 80% of the total. There were 649 Guinea Pigs at the end of the war. The majority were British (65-70%). Other nationalities included, Canadian (27%), Australian (8%), New Zealander (8%). The camaraderie and spirit within The Queen Victoria Hospital are reflected by the “Guinea Pig Anthem".

After the war, communications have been maintained by the publication of a twice yearly magazine that is distributed throughout the world. Members meet for a weekend reunion every year in East Grinstead and on other occasions. Its aim now, 55 years after the club was formed, is to ensure that Guinea Pigs in financial difficulties are assisted. If medical advice is needed, the advice of the Department of Plastic Surgery is sought. The first President, Sir Archibald McIndoe died in 1960. From that time H.R.H. The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh has been the President. From that original total number of 649, only 210 remain.

The Club has much to offer, having experienced disfigurement and functional loss, particularly due to restricted use of fingers. Members are always willing to assist new burns patients, showing them that through adversity a full life can be lived.

As I said at the start in Febuary 2010 My self my Girlfreind and John the Wheels for CharityWebmaster had the great Honour to meet the Guniea Pigs and go on a visitwith them to RAF Lakenheath. along with our great freinds The Marham Veterains Group (RAF AT) Below are the Photos that were taken.

We are a free club to join. We are made up of anything on wheels,from trucks to bikes.

Our aim is to fund raise for charity while having fun.We all ways donate 100% of the money we raise for our Charities.

Non of our charities pots are unsealed and counted without the minimum of at least 2 members of the committee and 1 independent person present and we publicise or pot count documents on Facebook and now on Twitter publicly.All registered members of our forum can view the account on the Forum and the Books are also taken to every event we go to and we are only to willing to show people if asked.Cheques sent to our charities are also written out in the same way as we do the pot counts and publicise in the same way.When sending cheques they will only be sent by registered mail.

Last year we attended Parades,car shows,truck shows and more.

We like to get the kids involved in what we do, as we feel it is educational for them and sets a great example for others.We rely on event donating a pick to us,so as we can still always donate 100% of the money we raise for our charities.

Following the many heart-breaking stories that emerged from the losses

in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Forces Children's Trust was founded in

2004 by Denny Wise in an effort to fill a gap in the charitable field

of family care. Denny was concerned that the subsequent needs of the

affected children, were not being fully addressed. Over the years the

charity has grown considerably in size, allowing it to improve the

lives of many children.

On the 15th December 2010, Denny Wise who founded this brilliant charity, has been awarded a Sun Millie... about time he was applauded for the fantastic work he & his team have done for the many children of the forces, who have suffered bereavement.

To help and assist MOD/999 servicemen and women to “open doors to the outside” by fitting out Land Rovers for full amputee driving, enabling offroad and onroad driving experiences, expeditions and events. Aimed at Amputees who have lost limbs mainly, Project Mobility aims to provide training, vehicles and financial support for family breaks and holidays utilising these kitted vehicles. We will be working with people to ensure they can continue life as mobile as possible and work alongside the likes of BAFMA and Met Police Motor Club and others to empower users to participate in events and progress their skills related to work and life balance.

The Big Knicker Wall for the Troops

Our Boys in Afghanistan have sent out a rallying cry for you to send them some saucy knickers to put a smile on their faces!!

They launched a competition to build the biggest knicker wall at their base in Kandahar.

We are calling all you girls to send your Knickers to us so we can pack them up and send them out to the Lads.

Firstly we would all at Wheels for Charity would like to thank everyone over the weekend for there support.

We would like to thank Mario & Lisa for attending this event and being so fantastic.Everyone over the weekend were so amazed by them and found them to be totally different to what they expected.

A big thank you goes out to The Oliver Cromwell Hotel in March who donated us the Room for Mario & Lisa to stay in & also to Joe the Owner of the Cantonese Kitchen in March for donating such a great evening meal to us for Myself, Maz,Mario & Lisa.

Imogen May urgently needs a communication aid - can you help?

Good news!

The NHS finally agreed to fund Imogen's communication aid!

The money that has been raised so far will be used for an add-on, an "eye-gaze" system which means that Imogen will not have to use her hands but can instead control the system by moving her eyes. As it is already hard for her to use her hands and this will only worsen, the eye-gaze add-on will one day be essential. More information coming soon!

Imogen is a 26 year old woman with a progressive illness similar to muscular dystrophy. Following emergency surgery in July 2009, she has lost the ability to speak.

Imogen lives on her own (with 24 hour care) in a village which is a 50 minute bus ride away from Cambridge. She is a vibrant, outgoing young woman who is in the final year of a photography degree.

Her loss of speech has been devastating as she relies on it...

To keep in touch with friends and family by phone, so she is not alone

To give instructions to her care assistants

To participate in class and other situations at university

To convey essential information to her medical specialists, particularly in emergency or crisis situations (which occur every month or so)

Out and about everyday - shopping, ordering a taxi, meeting friends

The NHS's response to Imogen's loss of speech was to offer her a laminated piece of paper with the alphabet printed on it!

An alphabet card is useless - firstly it takes a lot of effort for Imogen to spell out words by pointing to every individual letter, and secondly she is dyslexic so her spelling is hard to understand anyway! Plus of course you cannot use an alphabet card over the phone.

Imogen's Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) has been very supportive but the NHS simply does not have the funding to provide communication aids for adults. In fact her SALT did manage to find an old electronic device, however it had a very basic interface and was physically difficult for Imogen to use as it required her to hold a stylus. In any case, this device broke after just a few days of use (after completing the video below), leaving Imogen with the alphabet card again.

The hardware that Imogen really needs - which she has used effectively for a month-long trial, the orange unit in the video below - is the Liberator Eco2 (link). However, this unit costs £7000 which is far beyond her means. She has had to return the trial unit and now feels very vulnerable and isolated as she can no longer communicate adequately, let alone effectively.

Ideally Imogen needs the Liberator with an Eye-gaze system - so her eye movement can control a mouse pointer - but this costs £11000. As she really needs to get communicating urgently, in the first instance she is trying to raise £7000 for the basic unit, which is what the totaliser represents

alternatives?

Other methods of communication have been explored - for example, although Imogen cannot make very accurate shapes with her hand, she is learning British Sign Language. However, this is no use on the telephone, and while it might be useful in a hospital to convey basic concepts it will never be a solution for Imogen to express herself fully - and in most situations there will not be an interpreter available.

As Imogen finds it hard to use her hands, writing things down is also not an option. Email is usually possible to some degree, but this does not work face to face (and you can't take a laptop out and about, because of limited battery life, durability issues and lack of waterproofing). Also, email is no substitute for using the phone e.g. to call a taxi or just to hear a friendly voice. Most importantly, when Imogen has a medical crisis she is too ill to type.
