China's home-grown drone, the Rainbow 5, has successfully completed its maiden flight in Northwest China's Gansu province, China Central Television (CCTV) reported.
The drone, twice the size of other unmanned aerial vehicles developed by China in the past, also took the lead internationally, CCTV said.

The Rainbow 5 started its trial flight early in the morning to minimize influences over civil flights. It landed steadily after about 20 minutes of flying, and completed the scheduled procedures before pulling up.
Chief designer Ou Zhouming says he is very satisfied with the trial flight.
The flagship drone has a maximum takeoff weight of three tons, a maximum payload of 900 kilograms, and an endurance of over 30 hours. Made of composite materials, it has a wingspan of 20 meters and is designed to perform tasks of air reconnaissance and strikes.
Menhan Ryamizard Ryacudu pun merasa keberatan.

MBDA’s family of EXOCET missiles comprises a range of easy to use, stand-off “fire and forget” stealthy missiles with skimming flight for engaging high value naval targets with the flexibility to be fired from all maritime platforms – surface ships, submarines, fixed wing aircraft, helicopters and coastal batteries.

EXOCET, in production since 1972, was the West’s first long range anti-ship missile with "fire and forget" and skimming flight capabilities.

EXOCET is a complete family of all-weather heavy anti-ship missiles suitable for all types of carriers. It is available in several versions:
• surface to surface (MM) for ships
• air-to-sea (AM) for aircraft and helicopters
• submarine-surface (SM) for submerged submarines
• land-sea (BC) for coastal batteries.

EXOCET has an OTH (Over The Horizon) firing capability and a range of other operational benefits including :
• low signature
• late seeker activation
• sea-skimming at very low altitude
• enhanced target discrimination and ECCM
• high penetrative power against modern naval air defences.

MBDA has developed the latest generation of this highly successful family of missiles with the EXOCET MM40 Block3 which is compatible with existing MM40 launchers. MM40 Block3 has a significantly extended operational range making it a 200 km class weapon and features open ocean, littoral and coastal land attack capabilities. It is available for surface ships and coastal batteries. EXOCET AM39 can be launched from a range of platforms: fighter aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft and medium or heavy helicopters at stand-off ranges.

EXOCET SM39 is launched from a submarine’s torpedo tubes enclosed in a VSM (Véhicule Sous Marin). The VSM, a self-propelled and guided container, manoeuvres before surfacing so as not to reveal the position of the submarine. Once in the air, the EXOCET missile leaves the VSM and proceeds to the target like a normal surface variant of the missile.

Programme status

Since entering service in 1972, 3,600 EXOCET missiles, in all configurations, have been sold to 35 countries.

EXOCET MM40 Block2, 70 km class, is in service with the French Navy and many other navies worldwide.

EXOCET MM40 Block3 is in service with the French Navy on its Horizon class frigates and will equip its variant of the Franco-Italian FREMM frigate. It has also been ordered by several other export customers. In April 2007, MM40 Block3 successfully carried out its final qualification firing. In March 2010, the French Navy carried out an operational firing of an Exocet MM40 Block3 from its Horizon class Chevalier Paul frigate. Series production of Exocet MM 40 Block 3 started in April 2008 and deliveries to customers have been on-going since April 2009.

EXOCET AM39 is in service with the French armed forces and the navies of 11 other countries. In January 2004, the French DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement) awarded MBDA with the contract covering the development of both the Exocet AM39 Block2 Mod2 and the Exocet MM40 Block3. In June 2007, the latest Mod2 development of the Exocet AM39 Block2 completed its final validation firing from a naval Rafale F3 combat aircraft. The firing also served as the validation firing for the Rafale in its F3 standard. An operational evaluation firing took place in September 2012 from a Rafale marking the end of military testing and the start of the missile’s operational life on this aircraft. The Mod2 evolution has seen the digitisation of Exocet AM39 Block2, an adaptation called for by the requirements of the latest generation of rotary and fixed wing aircraft such as the Rafale F3.

The Bergepanzer 3 Buffel (Buffalo) armored recovery vehicle was developed by Rheinmetall. It is based on the Leopard 2 chassis and is fitted with powerful recovery system. With introduction of the Leopard 2 main battle tank in 1979 it appeared that the previous Bergepanzer 2A2, based on the Leopard 1 MBT chassis, was not powerful enough to support the new main battle tank. A development program for a new armored recovery vehicle was launched. The first prototypes of the Bergepanzer 3 were completed in 1988. Deliveries of the new ARV commenced in the early 90s.

The Buffel ARV is currently in service with Germany, Canada, Greece, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Components of the Buffel, like the crane, dozer blade are installed on the South Korean K1 ARV, French Leclerc DNG armored recovery vehicles.

The Bergepanzer 3 is fitted with a crane, winch and front-mounted dozer. The main mission of the Buffel is recovery of damaged, overturned and swamped main battle tanks and other tracked vehicles. It also provides maintenance service or tows them to maintenance units. Other tasks of the Buffel include general dozing and obstacle removal.

The Buffel has a large crane installed on the rotary platform, which is capable of lifting 30 000 kg. The crane can be traversed 270 degrees. It has an electronic momentum limiter, which prevents overloading. It is capable of lifting the turret of most main battle tanks. It is also used to lift powerpacks of the MBTs, or for other load-lifting works. If repairs are required to a vehicle's suspension, the crane raises the front of back of the vehicle to allow access to the damaged system. When not required the crane lays along the right side of the hull.

The Bergepanzer 3 carries a spare powerpack at the rear of the hull. It can replace the powerpack of the Leopard 2 within 25-35 minutes, depending on the version of the tank.

The main mechanical winch is installed at the front of the hull. It is provided with 180 m of cable and has a traction force of 35 t. With the help of pulley blocks traction force is increased to 70 t. The main winch of the Bergepanzer 3 is used for recovery of damaged, stuck, sunken and overturned vehicles.

The Buffel armored recovery vehicle tows damaged, faulty or uncontrolled vehicles, or similar type tanks using rigid or non-rigid hitches. Crew can connect a rigid hitch under armor from inside of the hull without exiting the vehicle. The Buffel has a towing capacity of 62 000 kg. Vehicles are towed to the nearest shelters, assembly points of repair depots.

This combat vehicle has a welding outfit for welding and cutting works in the field. These are carried by one of the crew member. The Buffel also has a set of tools for field repairs.

The front-mounted dozer blade is used for clearing obstacles and earth-mowing works, such as preparation of firing positions, covering up of ditches, self-entrenching and so on. The dozer blade is also used to stabilize the vehicle during craning and winching operations.

The Buffel carries a single 7.62-mm machine gun for self-defense. There are also 16 smoke grenade dischargers. Vehicle has an automatic fire suppression system and NBC protection system for the crew.

This armored recovery vehicle has a crew of three, including commander, driver and handler. During peacetime the Buffel is operated by a crew of two. Access to the inside of the vehicle is provided by three large doors.

The Buffel is powered by MTU MB 837 Ka-501 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 500 hp. It uses the same engine as the Leopard 2 main battle tank. With preparation this armored recovery vehicle fords water obstacles up to 4 m deep.

Venezuela has launched a modernization program for its Brazilian manufacturing 6x6 armoured vehicle personnel carrier EE-11 Urutu. The first prototype was showed in February 2013 to the military authorities of the country, and the July 24, 2013, the vehicle was presented to the public during the Navy Day of the Venezuela.

The new upgraded EE-11 Urutu of Venezuela Marine Corps.

The new upgrade of the EE-11 Urutu is fitted with a one-man turret armed with a 20mm cannon Oerlikon GAM-B01/L90 and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. The vehicle is powered with a new engine, the gearbox and the suspension were replaced.

This version is equipped now with a new electrical system and air conditioning. The new vehicle is named IMB-580. The vehicle is now under evaluation and testing for a period of eight months in the amphibious battalion of the Venezuelan army.

One of the major improvements is the installation of one thermal camera supplied by the Belgian Company Pegasus Technologies. The camera is mounted on the top of the 20 mm cannon to provide infrared and night vision for the gunner through a multi-function 10-inch color display Barco NV TX-126. This new system increases the day/night combat capabilities of the Urutu EE-11 in all weather conditions.

The vehicle uses also a new flotation system to improve the stability of the vehicle due of weight increase with the 20mm turret.

The variant with the 12.7mm heavy machine gun will be also upgraded with the new thermal camera. The overall modernization project concerns a total of 37 Urutu EE-11 vehicles, and could also be used to modernize the amphibious armored vehicle LVTP-7 purchased from the United States in the 70s.

The Japanese government approved Friday a revision to the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) law to allow the forces to use land vehicles to transport Japanese and other nationals overseas, according to local media.

The decision was made in a cabinet meeting Friday morning in response to the Algerian hostage crisis, which killed 38 hostages, including 10 Japanese, in January.

The current SDF law only allows the SDF to transport overseas Japanese by air or sea. The revision enabled the forces to transport Japanese and foreigners in need of help on such vehicles like armored trucks, according to Japan's Kyodo News Agency.

The revision also allowed the SDF to transport their families and other parties concerned such as officials, people sent by Japanese companies and doctors, reported Kyodo.

Under the new revision, the SDF can carry out the operation when transportation can be carried out safely after discussing the expected dangers and measures to avoid them. The current law says the transport shall be carried out when safety is assured.

A new
air-to-air missile (PL-10) has been seen on Chinese J-11B fighters. The
PL-10 looks very similar to the South African A-Darter. This is an 89 kg
(196 pound), three meter (9.3 foot) long heat seeking missiles that is
highly maneuverable and resistant to countermeasures. The A-Darter is
not yet in service, but is designed to be similar to the U.S. AIM-9X.
A-Darter is being developed in cooperation with Brazil. It’s not known
if PL-10 is actually in service. It has been described and discussed for
at least three years.

The J-11 is a clone of the Russian Su-27. The J-11A is being
supplanted by the J-11B. At least two squadrons of J-11Bs are in
service with the air force.
The original J-11 entered service in 1998, but production was very slow
and only a hundred were produced. Chinese officials were dismayed with
the performance of the obsolete Russian electronics. After that, at
least a hundred of the 33 ton J-11A was built. This model was equipped
with modern, Chinese made, electronics and is capable of using up to
eight tons of radar guided air-to-air missiles and smart bombs. But the
J-11B, while the same size and weight as the J-11A, has a more capable
AESA radar and is intended to specialize in air-to-ground missions,
while also being able to take care of itself in air-to-air combat. The
navy is using a beefed up version of the J-11B (the J-11BH) on its
carriers.
There appear to be about 200 J-11s in service, with about 40
France has
bought American Javelin missile systems for use in French VAB armored
vehicles serving in Afghanistan. At least ten of the 13 ton, 4x4 VAB
wheeled armored vehicles are being equipped with six Javelin missiles
and two launchers each. A Javelin system consists of a launcher (or CLU,
for Command Launch Unit) and several missiles. This weapon was first
used during 2003 invasion of Iraq. It is a "fire and forget" missile
with a 2,500 meter range and the ability to knock out most armored
vehicles (except for the most modern ones, and then only having problems
when hitting their frontal armor.)

Several hundred Javelins were fired in 2003, and several
thousand to date. One advantage of the Javelin is its weight. The sight
and firing unit (CLU) weighs 6.8 kg (15 pounds), while the missile,
which comes in a sealed, 6.1 kg (13.5 pound) firing tube, weighs 9.8 kg
(21.5 pounds). What the troops really like is the simplicity (you get
the target in the cross hairs, pull the trigger, and that's that) and
reliability of the system. French troops saw the Javelin in action in
Afghanistan, and eventually, an order was placed.
The only down side is that each missile costs over $80,000.
Simplicity and reliability come at a price. But throw a CLU and a few
missile tubes (each is about a meter, or 42 inches, long) into the back
of a vehicle, and you're ready to take out armored vehicles, a bunker or
a building the bad guys won't come out of. The CLU also makes an
excellent night vision device, and troops often use it that way with
great success.
This was not the first upgrade for the VABs in Afghanistan.
Three years ago, France ordered fifty Kongsberg PROTECTOR Remote Weapon
Stations (RWS) for use on its VAB (which normally carries a 12.7mm
machine-gun, and this weapon will be installed in the RWS). The RWS has
proved to be a real life saver, not to mention anxiety reducer, for
troops who drive through bandit country a lot, and man the turret gun.
You're a target up there, and too often, the bad guys get you. Not with
an RWS. The gunner is inside the vehicle, checking out the surroundings
(with night vision and telephoto capabilities). The RWS also has a laser
rangefinder built in, as well as a stabilizer mechanism to allow more
accurate fire while the vehicle is moving. These systems cost about a
quarter million dollars each, and can mount a variety of weapons (M2
12.7mm caliber machine-gun, MK19 40-mm automatic grenade launcher, M240B
7.62mm machine-gun and M249 5.56mm squad automatic weapon).
Since many troops have years of experience with video games,
they take to the RWS quickly, and very effectively. The U.S. Army has
already bought over 7,000 of the Kongsberg RWS. The French plan to
eventually buy over 300.
The Yingji-82 or YJ-82 (Chinese: 鹰击-82, literally "Eagle Strike"; NATO reporting name: CSS-N-8 Saccade) is a Chinese anti-ship missile first unveiled in 1989 by the China Haiying Electro-Mechanical Technology Academy (CHETA), also known as the Third Academy. Due to the Yingji-82 missile's small radar reflectivity, low attack flight path (only five to seven meters above the sea surface) and strong anti-jamming capability of its guidance system, target ships have a very small chance of intercepting the missile. The single shot hit probability of the Yingji-82 is estimated to be as high as 98%. The Yingji-82 can be launched from airplanes, surface ships, submarines and land-based vehicles. Its export name is the C-802.

Design
The Yingji-82 (C-802) anti-ship missile was derived from the Chinese YJ-8 (C-801) with extended range. The YJ-82 is externally similar to the YJ-8, and has the same solid-propellant rocket booster and guidance system as the YJ-8. The most distinctive difference on the YJ-82 is that it employs a turbojet with paraffin-based fuel to replace the original solid rocket engine. For this reason the fuselage was extended to accommodate the extra fuel. The maximum range of the missile has also been extended from the original 40 km (or 80 km for YJ-81/C-801A) to 120 km.
The YJ-82 is almost identical to the YJ-8 in appearance apart from a slightly longer fuselage and an air inlet for the turbojet engine. The missile has a slim body and ovoid nose. There are four front delta wings, four smaller control surfaces, and four large tail stabilising wings. The tail wings are mounted on the rocket booster and will be lost when the booster detaches from the missile body. The air inlet is located between the main fins under the missile body. The front and tail wings are folded when the missile is in the launcher.
When the missile is launched, the solid rocket propellant booster accelerates the speed of the missile to Mach 0.9 in a few seconds. After the booster burns out, it detaches from the missile body and the missile's turbojet engine starts working. Controlled by the inertial autopilot system and radio altimeter, the missile flies at a cruising speed of Mach 0.9, and the cruise altitude is reduced to 10-20 metres (depending on the sea state) from the original 20-30 metres of the C-801/YJ-81.
When entering the terminal phase of flight, the missile switches on its terminal guidance radar to search for the target. Once within a few kilometers of the target, the missile drops to 3-5 meters above sea level, about the same as a French Exocet missile. This altitude is slightly lower than the original 5-7 metres of the C-801/YJ-81. The missile may also maneuver during the terminal phase to make it a more difficult target for shipborne air defense systems. When approaching the target, the missile dives to hit the waterline of the ship to inflict maximum damage. At the 6th Zhuhai Airshow held at the end of 2006, the manufacturer revealed that the "pop-up" approach and the checkpoint flight functions are being worked on.
As well as its terminal guidance radar, the midcourse guidance is inertial. During the inertial guidance, the YJ-8 missile is also equipped with a radio altimeter for use with its autopilot during cruise. The missile's terminal guidance radar with monopulse system possesses high anti-jamming capabilities. The high precision radio altimeter allows the missile to have minimum-altitude flight above the sea, which is normally 20−30 m.
The missile uses a 165 kg semi-armor-piercing anti-personnel blast warhead which relies on the missile's kinetic energy to pierce the deck of a ship, penetrate into and explode in the ship's interior. In addition, the YJ-82 might have a higher single hit probability than the YJ-8/YJ-81.

Upgrades
Most upgrades of C-802 are funded not by the Chinese government but by the manufacturers and trading firms themselves. Most upgrades were mainly focused on the guidance systems.
The radar altimeter can be replaced by a newly developed laser altimeter, which is much less likely to be detected via ESM. The laser altimeter can be retrofited to all models of this anti-ship missile family.
One of the first upgrades included the incorporation of infrared guidance so that there is a dual guidance system similar to that of the Taiwanese Hsiung Feng II missile. Imaging infrared seeker and a television seeker similar to that of the C-701 anti-ship missile became available later. The imaging infrared seeker is reportedly derived from the imaging infrared seeker technology developed for Chinese air-to-air missiles. These three seekers are interchangeable with the original radar seeker, and can be fitted at naval bases rather than the factory.
As the imaging infrared seeker and the television seeker are significantly smaller than the radar seeker, the manufacturer has taken advantage of the extra space to develop a variety of combined seekers for dual guidance, which include: radar and imaging infrared guidance, television and imaging infrared guidance, dual band (infrared and imaging infrared) guidance, and television and infrared guidance. These combined seekers can also be fitted at naval bases. According to domestic Chinese news media the manufacturer says that as of the last quarter of 2006 no orders for had been received for any of the combined seekers except the radar and infrared guidance, due to funding problems.
A datalink associated with the radar seeker and the dual radar and infrared guidance seeker armed C-802 was added enabled the missile to receive target information provided by aircraft and this later became a standard feature. The first successful test fire of the C-802 with the datalink was conducted with Harbin SH-5 ASW equipped with British radar, and soon after, with Y-8X Maritime Patrol Aircraft equipped with Litton Canada radar. This datalink was originally developed for YJ-83/C-803, the successor of the YJ-82/C-802, and adopted for the YJ-82/C-802 upgrade.
Based on the datalink associated with the radar seeker, a newer datalink that was compatible with all three types of seekers was also successfully developed, enabling the missile to significantly improve its attack capability by allowing the pilot of the aircraft or the crew of the ship to view the images provided by the television or the imaging infrared seekers, and thus to select the potential targets, just like the way A-10 pilots used the images provided by the imaging infrared seekers of AGM-65 Maverick Air-to-surface missiles for targeting during the Persian Gulf War. Land attack capability is the greatest beneficiary since mobile targets on land can be engaged as a result, though only when the missile is equipped with television and imaging infrared seekers, but not the radar seeker. Like the datalink only associated with the radar seeker, the newer datalink allows the operators to alter the course of the missile and change targets after launching. However, there are no reports to support the claim that the operator can terminate the attack via the datalink like that of the Harpoon missile. This new datalink has very little difference from radar seeker associated datalink it is developed from in terms of hardware, the major difference is the software programs.
For the air-launched version, a universal missile launching rail system was also developed for C-802, reducing the installation time significantly. Furthermore, the new system allowed virtually any aircraft in the Chinese inventory to be armed with YJ-82K.
For the surface-launched version, Chinese developed a new launcher/storage container that is able to handle YJ-8 (C-801), YJ-82 (C-802) and CY-1 ASW missiles, and this new container became standard.
Iran, the reported supplier of the missile to Hezbollah, refused to formally confirm or deny the claim. The Hanit suffered severe damage, but stayed afloat, got itself out of the line of fire, and made the rest of the journey back to Ashdod for repairs on its own.
The Israeli ship possessed sophisticated multi-layered missile defense capability: a Phalanx CIWS gun, Barak anti-missile missiles, Chaff and ECM. These should have been able to prevent an anti-ship missile attack such as the YJ-82, but according to the Israeli military, these were intentionally disabled at the time of the alleged Kowsar hit due to:

a lack of intelligence indicating Hezbollah possessed such a missile; and

the presence of many Israeli Air Force aircraft conducting operations in the vicinity of the ship which might have accidentally set off the ship's anti-missile/aerial threats system, with the danger of shooting down a friendly aircraft. However, the ship has an (optionally-installed, especially during wartime) Identification friend or foe interrogator system to prevent attacking friendly aircraft.

Ships can vary in the number of hull segments and in the order in which they are placed. Sigma stands for Ship Integrated Geometrical Modularity Approach. The ship's main dimensions are named in the types itself, SIGMA 9113 stands for 91 meters long and 13 meters wide, same is with the SIGMA 10513, 105 meters in length and 13 meters wide.
The design was derived from the earlier High Speed Displacement hull form by MARIN Teknikk AS in the 1970s.
