According to UNAIDS/WHO Fact Sheet on HIV/AIDS, about 5.7 million people in South Africa were living with HIV in 2007. South Africa continues to be home to the world's largest population living with HIV.

In 2006, Vhembe District had an estimated HIV prevalence of 14.1 which increased to 15.2 the following year. This could be an indication that we are not winning the battle in terms of preventing new HIV infections. It might also mean that we are not yet committed enough to win the battle against HIV. As members of Anaconda Youth in Action, we have just realised that. It is against such background that we would like to focus on HIV Treatment and Prevention programmes in 2012.

This however, shall need more commitment, dedication, strategies and resources. This year, we will work on strategies to mobilise resources to address the challenges mentioned above. Management of Anaconda Youth in Action and The Board of Directors will work tirelessly to realise the vision of the organisation.

Social Auxilliary Learnership

Anaconda Youth in Action proudly announce the reinstatement of Francinah Dibete on a learnership programme. Anaconda was funded for implementing 3 learnerships in 2009, 2 in Ancillary Health Care and 1 in Social Auxiliary.

Due to unforeseen circumstances between the training provider and the Sector Education and Training Authority, the learnerships were discontinued. When learnerships are discontinued due to problems relating to training provider not be able to continue with their duties, learners can be transferred to another training provider which complies with all the learnership requirements. This however has been done a bit late when we couldn't think it will continue.

We are welcoming the decision taken by Health and Welfare SETA to give Tendazwau Trading8 to continue in training learners who were initially halted.

Anaconda Youth in Action continues to be a source of information for young people at and around Mailaskop village. We are intending to expand our services to the whole area under Makhado Municipality and Vhembe area.

Conference on Social Security Systems Brazil, Brasilia 2010

From 1 to 5 December 2010, Brasilia, Brazil, I had an exciting opportunity to participate in the 1^st World Conference on the Development of Social Security Systems organized by the Brazilian Government, international civil society organisations and international trade union organisations. About 677 delegates from 90 countries around the world attended and participated in the conference, bringing the total number of participants to 1089 participants including myself and National Council of Trade Union (NACTU) representative, the only participants at the conference from South Africa. South Africa was supposed to have sent 20 participants, 10 from government and 10 from civil society but only the two of us managed to attend.

On my way living to Brazil, I told myself that I knew the airport logistics, since I went to Kenya earlier this year until some ladies at OR Tambo International’s check-in point demanded a letter confirming that I am going to attend a conference in Brazil. Adam at that moment didn’t have a hard copy of the letter and the ladies said “you can go down stairs and print it at the internet cafe, otherwise you won’t go”. At that time there was only an hour left for me to check in and go to the boarding gate. I went down stairs at Telkom internet cafe and the internet was working but printer was not working, then I went one shop to the next with no success. One last shop was the photo shop which I believed I will be assisted but it was of no assistance. “We are not allowed to insert flash drives in our computers, it is a policy to protect the system from viruses” The lady at the shop said. Then at last when I went back to the check-in point, miracle had happened, the ladies were gone and I said to myself “thanks God”.

It was only when I went to the boarding gates and realised “there is no escape”. But I managed to open my lap top and show them a saved letter, and then I was given a go ahead to board the plane.

Ten hours of non-stop plane on air and another one and half hour was the time I spent to finally reach Brasilia, via Sao Paulo. On arrival at the hotel, all I needed was a warm bath and good night sleep and enthusiastically dreaming about the following day.

Finally the conference day approached an in a nut shell this was my observation. The conference has been an exciting opportunity for me and so many other participants from around the world to debate and agree to disagree on how social security systems could be developed in those countries that have not yet developed it. It has been a platform for Brazil and other Latin American countries to showcase their work in terms of their social security strategies they are implementing. With a push to universalisation of social security systems, activists, government officials and trade unionists have agreed that every country need to develop social security systems for advancing the lives of their counties citizens.

The conference was also useful for me in terms of linking social security systems and the work that we do as Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) Mopani district and as a member of People’s Health Movement (PHM). Health, Social Assistance, Housing, Unemployment Insurances all forms part of the social security systems.

It was agreed that countries need not to start new social security systems campaigns but to incorporate the social security concept in their current campaigns such as the resources for health, pushing countries which are in the process of amending their constitutions to consider putting social security systems as basic rights on their bill of rights section. Inclusion in the economic trade agreements and many other initiatives should touch on the concept of social security and or social protection.

It was also resolved in an African regional group discussion that African regions, Northern Africa, Eastern Africa, West Africa and Southern Africa shall show solidarity in each other’s work relating to social security. An international coordinating committee should be formed and linked with other existing regional committees and institutions that are working on the realisation of social security systems. The outcomes of the World Social Security Forum which happened in Cape Town, South Africa from 29 November to 4 December 2010 is an example of initiatives that have to be linked together to avoid duplication of work, especially advocacy work. I believe that linking the outcomes is key, since the two conferences had similar objectives which one of them was about discussing universalisation of social security.

A follow up forum for the Brazil conference will be held in Dakar, Senegal in February 2011 to discuss further moving forward with the social security systems realisation. Campaign for Clean Running Water for ALL

Mailaskop is a small village, west of Vleifontein Township in the Makhado Municipal area.More than ten thousand people live in this village. The village is governed by both Traditional Leaders and Civic structure (SANCO). Most pats of it has electricity and there is a tared road passing by in a westerly direction that joins the N1 to and from Polokwane and Makado.

The village used to be supported by an old farm borehole run by a diesel engine. About five years ago, the machine broke several times and some people said the borehole has no water anymore.

Our concern is that at the moment we do not have enough supply of water for the village. most people travel long distance just to fetch water which can only reach few street taps in the village. we have a new borehole in the village with good estimated water capacity, we have a steel reservour and unederground water pipes than has not ever feel the the flow of water.

We believe that the government has the responsibility to provide us with clean running water. The ANC, as the current rulling political organisation has promised free basic services in their 1999 election campaign. for us in the village, water is just in our dream but not in our reach.

As young people in the village, we find it proper to engage in a campaign for CLEAN RUNNING WATER for or village.

We would like to request your support in the struggle for clean water in our community of Mailaskop in Limpopo Province.

We as the Youth of Mailaskop are concerned with unavailability of water in our community, we often buy water from those having boreholes while our Government has a responsibility to provide us with this basic need.

We are requesting for your support in this campaign. We would like to see the village with clean running water in 2012.

Treatment Action Campaign Mopani's HCT Campaign in Tzaneen

Today (08/10/2010), members of the Treatment Action Campaign (Mopani District), Khutso Kurhula, Hope Humana and other Community Based organisations in Tzaneen area conducted a HIV Counseling and Testing Campaign. The campaign was held at Tzaneen Taxi Rank on the Southern Entrance to Tzaneen Crossing shopping complex. Members of TAC were mostly active in mobilising people to go to test for HIV in tented counseling rooms provided by Khutso Kurhula and Hope Humana Mopani.

The campaign was a success as people were cuing in numbers outside the counseling rooms. TAC Mopani has proposed an idea of havina an 'HIV FRIDAY" where each friday will be dedicated to HIV Counseling and Testing. On the day people will brand themselves in HIV POSITIVE T-shirts to fight against stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV.

The Department of Health in the Tzaneen provided with catering for all who was involved in the campaign.

Treatment Action Campaign Mopani's Team Building in Style

In the interest of everybody’s health at Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) Mopani office, we had a staff team building with all Prevention Treatment Literacy Practitioners (PTLPs) and Community Health Advocates (CHAs) facilitated by the district manager , Cedrick Nukeri on the 1st of October 2010 at Tzaneen Dam. The theme was ‘’learning to give trust’

Soccer game was introduced to show how we trust each other when working together as a team. The game was divided into two teams, ARVs and HIV. Each team had eleven players irrespective of gender, coach and assistant coach. The teams were differentiated by the colour of HIV positive T/shirts. The game also consisted of the referee to ensure free and fair play. Unfortunately there was a winning team and a defeated team, the HIV defeated the ARV team by 4 to 2.

The game was played only for thirty minutes with first half and second half play. In the final whistle of the referee’s added time we gathered around to talk about the good and bad things encountered. The coaches were given the platform to talk about their experiences in the game and what it means to them being a team leader. Players were also allocated time to express their views in mind and feelings about their experiences in the game.

The game was then translated into CHA and PTLP programmes. The coordinators of both programmes were viewed as coaches in this game. The common view shared by most people in the game and through evaluation forms is that there are lot of challenges but working together as a team makes things easy and must learn to trust other people in order to succeed.Since it was a mixed gender game, the members of the teams agreed that Jeaneth Mkhawana was a player of the match.
