Summertime, Summertime, Sum,Sum, Summertime....

I am officially on summer vacation...Woo Hoo!! Though I have a busy summer ahead...I am still glad to see another school year behind me!! Now, I realize my OOTD looks much like yesterday's, but I wanted to end the school year in one of my favorites. I love this knit jacket, with the jeans and jewelry!!

I will be spending a week in Chicago with Mr. B soon...returning to teach summer school speech...then taking six week's to write a book!! If I am ever going to do this, the time is NOW! So many of you have encouraged me about this book! In the middle of the summer, I will turn 60...worth some kind of celebration...RIGHT??

So, what is on your calendar this summer?? We would love to know!! Finally, a fabulous reader, Lise, sent this sign to me and I love it so much I printed one to leave in my classroom to face first thing next year!! Opening A New Door

Today is my weekly column for GENERATION FABULOUS. I have been very open on this blog with my life in an effort to encourage other women during that fun middle age time of life. But, there are a few doors which have been unopened. Today, I open the door a little wider to what led to my wake-up call at age 50. This is new information, I have not shared before. First Garden Party of the Season!

Garden Party...Backyard BBQ...Outdoor Cookout...whatever you call them, we love to party outside in Texas. I am sure that is surprising since we all know it is really hot down south! But, we will go anywhere for Country Music, sweet tea, and grilled food!

Saturday was our first one to attend of 2013, and it was a sizzler. High humidity in the upper 90s...but good food and good friends.

I am not certain why I chose black, I was just in the mood. This TRAVELER'S vest from CHICO'S was the star of the outfit. Running a close second...a necklace I purchased at Stein Mart last year!

There was one other attendee in black, but mostly my friends brought out their color and crops!

I have friends who prefer to wear a cute maxi to outdoor events in the summer, but none were seen at this party!

Treat Yourself....I Did With A Little Leopard!!

Wow, there have been a couple of heavy emotional posts for me over the last week! So, I am ready to have some fun! What better way to celebrate fun than with LEOPARD.

I write this advice often: Give yourself permission to receive a treat occasionally for something special…and I am not talking about chocolate. I work pretty hard…from rise at 4:30AM to bedtime around 9:30! And…it really helps me to keep on keeping on if I give myself an occasional treat. Back when my children were at home, I would spend every financial gift on them or on household needs. But now, I think an occasional Perk for Pam is perfectly fine.

When I was gifted with money recently, I decided to locate a pair of shoes tormenting my sleep for a long time….the really good news is that THE SHOES were ON SALE! I was impressed with young accessories designer, Elaine Turner, the minute I met her at the OPENING OF A HER NEW BOUTIQUE in Alamo Heights last fall. Her shoes and purses are gorgeous! So, when I could purchase these $250 flats last week for $100….I went for it. I have to say I am in love!! When tempted to think about all of the other things I could do with that $100, I just put it out of my mind.

It does pay to sign up for emails from the retailers you love. Occasionally, you receive a sale notice not given to the general public. I see this happen with more than one. It can pay off big time. The offer I used from ELAINE TURNER also included free shipping on that day.

In honor of LEOPARD LOVE, I am also modeling my recent AMAZON purchase of this lightweight leopard infinity SCARF. The Fabulous Gigi - Happy 57th and A Tearful Announcement!

Wednesday is Gigi’s birthday…but I celebrate it holding back tears. Next week will end my last school year to teach at her side. By the end of the summer, she will move to another city. She will be art teacher for another lucky school and she will be the right arm of her single daughter as they raise two granddaughters together. Both Gigi and her husband have new jobs provided in perfect timing ...for a couple who places family at the top of their priorities.

We are kindred spirits in so many ways. Gigi is the one who gave me the idea and the encouragement to start a blog almost three years ago. She is the one who has convinced me to take six weeks off and write a book. As I enter my house each day, I smile at the colors of the walls…selected by Gigi; and the artwork over the fireplace…uncovered by Gigi at a resale shop. For fourteen years, our classrooms have been practically back to back.

She has been at my side during thrift treasure hunts…Chico’s sales…Fashion Night Out runway shows…and special events from Tim Gunn to Soft Surroundings....Starbuck's , Mexican food and garage sales. My closet boasts of garments she encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and try. We have laughed and cried over so much of life…

Now, many of you will say thank goodness for technology…computers, phones, blogs, etc. Of course, we will still communicate. But, it will not be the same. Anyone who knows what it is like to have a prayer partner understands the intimacy of the friendship.

I know she will be missed on this blog…I have actually received fan mail for her over the years. I want you to know that we gave her a fun name in the beginning of the blog, because neither of us knew where it was headed. I would like for all of you to know her name is GAIL. We will be blessed to occasionally see her until August and then it might be a special guest appearance every now and then.

Happy Birthday, Gail….thank you so much for the gifts you have given me…gifts of courage, encouragement, confidence, wise advice, and companionship. There will be a huge hole in my life without you. BFF!

I have spent most of my time the last fourteen years training high school students to be news reporters. Reporting is somewhat of a lost art these days, because it does not bring the big dollars to the bank account. A true reporter loves the profession, and is motivated by a desire to thoroughly investigate and give the public truth, as best determined through research, questioning, and interviews. There are many skills required for such a person to do their jobs with excellence…one of those skills is the ability to read body language.........

Have I told you I live in Sun City?? Well, I do! San Antonio, Tx is sunny and sizzling most days between now and October!

Scarves and Strength, Modeling Both!

Camilla Olson’s story from yesterday is so inspiring to me! Once I saw this gorgeous SILK SCARF with her textile design, I was even more impressed. With strength and confidence, there are no limitations to what Baby Boomer women can accomplish.

I have been pondering my past a lot this week…the week before Mother’s Day! The majority of the women from Generation Fabulous participated in a blogger collaboration about their mothers, HERE. I did not participate, because it is hard to write about a relationship which has been predominately negative. Then, Famous Footwear emailed. They wanted to feature me on their WEBSITE BLOG talking about my mother…an amazing opportunity. So, I was forced to think a little deeper about a relationship which most of my life has generated pain.

I believe all the clichés…there is a silver lining in all situations…if given lemons make lemonade. And on and on. In fact, Dolly Parton was just interviewed on a morning show and said, “If you want the rainbow, you have to put up with the rain!” The truth is that inside of my difficult home life and the difficult home life of my mother there is actually a shimmering rainbow and and delicious cold glass of lemonade. The difficulties birthed the strength I have inside today. She provided the foundation and it was my faith which made it concrete.

From her upbringing, mother learned perseverance and determination. From my past with her, I have learned the same. As a child of an alcoholic, abusive father, she learned to overcome and rise above difficult circumstances. With no college degree, she left home in her teens and eventually became an accomplished executive secretary for a top oil company. After my past with her, I left home during college and was determined to never look back. True, she also brought the worst of her upbringing to our home….mostly anger, but despite all of it, I now choose this day, this weekend, to only focus on the legacy of a strong, solid, confident constitution.

For those of you facing Mother’s Day with hurtful memories, find at least one silver lining. Those difficulties mold us for the good if we just peer deep inside and search for lessons learned. I believe they are there for all of us to discover...hidden underneath a painful past.

Today, I model Camilla Olson’s scarf to celebrate the strength, creativity, and resilience of women over 50…and, also, I model the strength of my 87 year old mother. I truly hope she will experience some joy and peace before she leaves this earth!

Reinvention After 50: Camilla Olson, Biochemist to Fashion Designer

Not many can transition from the world of a microbiologist to success as a fashion designer, but CAMILLA OLSON did this very thing at age 57. She brings a scientific view to design and has used her forward thinking to develop a new way of creating fabulous textiles. “Clothing must tell a story,” she says. “and address a woman’s needs and desires.”

Camilla was willing to answer some specific questions for the over50feeling40 audience about her reinvention. But, I also want to mention an interview she did with INSPIRARE because of this quote:

Inspirare Question: Who is your target? Progressive modern women who need to take their clothing from day to night including baby boomers. They are a lost and forgotten generation that easily gets dismissed by some stores… (YES, CAMILLA!!)

Pam: What was the main reason behind leaving the health care industry to pursue fashion?

Camilla: I felt like I reached the top of my game in that industry after 25 years. Going back to school was not something I was longing to do, but it happened. To encourage my daughter’s interests, I took her to the open house at the Academy of Art University to look into the fashion program. Surprisingly, she was not as interested as I was. At first I was excited to find a place where I could develop my sewing skills. Quickly I realized what I had committed myself to and was seduced by the idea of developing a label to dress my contemporaries.

Pam: Do your think your age was a plus, a minus, or a non-factor while you were in the Academy of Art?

Camilla: Let’s be honest, I was a fish out of water. I felt like all these kids had so much more talent. It was a club I didn’t belong to but I wanted membership. It was an amazing time of discovery for me, I had some brilliant teachers who really helped me focus my vision and refine my designs, a time of trial an error. I never stop learning now.

Pam: What surprises have you discovered about women 50+ and their fashion choices?

Camilla: First that there are not enough choices for women over 50 that are wearable and modern. I was disappointed at the response a few department stores had to my passion for dressing my generation. They were more interested in dressing women aged 35 years than dressing the baby-boomer. My line fits a wide range of women of all sizes, quite a few of my pieces have options for sleeves or no sleeves and you can pick your hem length. Let’s face it by 50 we know our assets.

Pam: Please explain as simply as possible how the iron transfer printing process(laying sheets of metal on to fine silk) works to create unique looks.

Camilla: During school one of my mentors was the former textile designer to Alexander McQueen, Simon Ungless. I worked closely with Simon where I developed the iron transfer imprinting process, which yields a soft and unique effect every time. It has a stunning elegant effect when applied to silk and I love the idea of using various shapes of metal to imprint upon the fabric. I have figured out a way to do this that is non-toxic and used kitchen-table ingredients.

Pam: What advice do you have for women who desire to leave their old lives behind and pursue their passions after middle age?

Camilla: Do it, there is no time like the present. Creativity is something that lives in all of us. It will get you out of your routine and give you a new adventure every day.

Fabulous Women Have "Big" Worlds!

The last child moved to college this weekend. What do I do now…she pondered? Suddenly, the busy house is quiet. No more wake up calls to make…no more dinner each night…no more schedules to oversee…just quiet.

Loneliness sets in far too quickly…for so long it was the children who connected her to other women. Now, she finds herself each day, with unhealthy food in hand and sitting in a chair, spending her time with Rachel Ray…Katie Couric…and reruns of television shows which bring a flood of memories and laughter. Only the laughter is only heard by one.

If you really think about it, we all know this woman..........

Chico's Sales...Flying Nuns...and Embracing Our Lives!

The minute Gidget hit the beaches, I loved Sally Field...she has been a part of my life since then, and I remained a fan from Flying Nuns to Steel Magnolias to Lincoln. She is a gifted and talented actress. That is why I picked up this USA Today Magazine, The Best, at the grocery last week.

I think we all assume the famous have fulfilled all of their dreams. So, the article was eye opening to me upon reading Sally was just now fulfilling her dream to live in NYC. She has moved there since the death of her mother and lives near her son. "I'm starting on Chapter One, Page One, of Part Three of my life," she told New York Magazine. I will not spoil the entire article, but will say, she has learned to "embrace herself" after 50. This is something we should all do...embrace ourselves.

Sally hopes to visit Paris for a month and return speaking French! She said, "I care more about playing roles I haven't played than if my neck looks like someone's bedroom curtains." She wants to live each moment to its fullest.

I couldn't let Gigi be the only one to enjoy the spring sales. I fell in love with this CHICO'S JACKET! My Chico's Passport discounts made it quite affordable on the day I purchased. I styled it with my re-fashioned vintage Chico's necklace and a cool ring I found at a consignment shop!! (Next time I will wear it with leggings.) This will be a favorite piece this summer...I know it is loose fitting, but it has vibe I really like.

Do you embrace your life? Wrap your arms around it and relish in it and fully enjoy what you have been handed this day? I encourage you to look past the trials...the difficulties...the obvious signs of aging...and fully embrace it!

Coldwater Creek ...Springtime...and Gigi!!

There are so many wonderful things about spring...

If I Were A Fashion Designer....

I think all of us at one time or another wish we were fashion designers! I know that I often do, but can barely sew on a button!

I also know that women on the blogs LOVE to give their opinions and wish today's designers took the needs and wishes of the 45+ crowd into consideration. SO, HERE IS YOUR CHANCE, LADIES! If you were a fashion designer for today's 45+ woman, what would you be designing.
For instance, I would love to have more options on affordable, quality knit leggings and tunics in rich saturated colors. I can see a line in my mind with textiles of tops and tanks in my "leaf" collection...combining colors similar to the leaves above (taken on my street). I can even see them with leggings and tunics in the granite patterns and neutral tones....from the concrete! I get excited just thinking about it!

Also, sizing is important to me. Recently, KOHLS introduced a new line by designer Derek Lam. I have worn the extra large sizes at Kohls from Vera Wang, Dana Buchman, and Jennifer Lopez. No problems. But, Derek Lam's extra large sizes do not work on my body at all. In my new role as fashion designer, I would make sure that doesn't happen and my sizing is consistent.

I would love to see more fashion forward....AFFORDABLE options in quality knits and no iron fabrics for the busy woman 45+. The fashion world just assumes the greater majority of us are retired and at home...not true, people!

So, ladies, what would you design if your were the designer. Where do you think the gaps are? What would you like to see in the retail outlets that you currently do not see?

I had an appointment at the dermatologist this week and saw this slogan on the back of the door. I photographed it because I was so bothered....there is NOTHING we can do to stop aging! Then I read this excellent post HERE at A Well Styled Life. She said what I was thinking...this insults our intelligence. I so agree!!

Reinvention After 50: The Doll Maker

“People tell me the dolls make them feel happy, and they make them smile or feel good after a bad day.” – Carold Linda Lewis

Like most little girls, she fell in love with dolls at age 5…but her dolls were not from a store, but made alongside her grandmother. Carold Linda Lewis continued her passion for making dolls throughout most of her life as a hobby. Yet, at age 58, convinced her unique way of fashioning dolls was a success she took her passion to full time work.

That was in 2003. Now at age 68, she can be found at most of the local craft fairs selling her dolls which represent everything from Elvis Presley to those made as personal gifts. Individuals will send her pictures of a friend or co-worker to design a custom made doll as a special gift. She is a gifted creator.

“There’s a wide range of dolls people ask me for,” Lewis told the San Antonio Express News in 2010. “Sometimes they lose a loved one and want to remember them that way. Or sometimes it’s a celebrity or political person; sometimes it’s their grandmother, sometimes it’s their boss. What you see in every- day life, that’s what people ask for.”

Her best- selling size is 18 inches, but she can make tiny as ten inches and as large as an actual person! Age does not stop her from working six days a week to create this wonderland of dolls.

Carold lights up when you approach her table and joyfully begins to introduce customers to the current family. She is living her dream job …right now…and is one of the great after 50 reinvention stories!

Metallics! How I Wear Them!

I am joining JILL and ADRIENNE on Wednesday with their How We Wear Our Metallics challenge.

I like a softer touch... like I find with this gold silk pencil skirt from TALBOT'S. I bought it last year during their season-end clearance sale. I particularly like to wear it with this Michael Kors, dolman sleeve sweater I found at Ross a couple of years ago. This was my outfit for our Journalism Banquet this past weekend where I celebrate the accomplishments of my print and broadcast teams.

I also like the subtle touch of gold in the Calvin Klein topper below, I purchased almost three years ago at Marshalls....however, the gold bling underneath is a way to add a bolder look! Find the other gorgeous metallic models HERE!! and HERE!!

Fabulous Comes in All Shapes and Sizes

I didn’t always believe that…you know, that fabulous women can come in all shapes and sizes. My whole life has been lived as one of those “bigger girls.” I have been on the low and high end of that phrase, but never below it.

It’s okay…you’re big boned.

I remember the day I really looked at the size of my wrist…smaller than most women…and thought, “My Mother has been lying to me!” Uh oh, if I am not big boned, then I must be… (Gasp), fat. I have been on every diet…avoided every exercise…and tried every low-fat dessert. The best thing about stress is that I can reward myself with ice cream….or even better (or worse?) apple pie.

I am being brutally open, because you need to understand that it wasn’t until I accepted my size that I began to desire to do something about it. After my personal makeover nine years ago, I started to learn how to dress my body in flattering ways. There are little fashion tricks which will take off a quick 5-10 pounds…and I know it is an optical illusion, but it does make me feel better about me.

So here is what had to happen first:

*I began to look in the mirror and find the positives. I would mentally say STOP when negatives began. I spent time on my favorite features…eyes, cheeks, hair…

*I started to learn and apply the fashion secrets for a more body flattering look. For example, did you know just getting a proper, up to date, professional bra fitting can do miracles to your figure? I remember thinking, “Ok, I might be a larger girl, but I am going to be one of the best looking larger girls around!”

*I did not leave the house or the dressing room without smiling and saying YES! That meant I spent time on styling an outfit until I could look in the mirror and know I was communicating strength. When I began to do this, then I walked out and entered rooms with confidence.

*After practicing steps 1-3, I started to get compliments and I now thank the compliment-giver and no longer argue with them as I did in the past. By thanking them, I acknowledge and accept the fact that I look good.

*It took a lot of courage, but I remember the first day, I sucked it up and entered Lane Bryant. It was the best decision I ever made. These were stylish, youthful, figure flattering clothes and they made a world of difference because the clothes actually fit! Prior to this, I was seen lurking around the door…sunglasses on ….scoping out the parking lot to see if I knew anyone…and then quickly jumping in the door!! Now I just boldly enter…this place has been my best friend and held my hand through gaining self- acceptance.

These are good steps to practice no matter what body issues you may have. Perhaps you hate being petite or tall…learn how to dress your body and budget in tailoring. It makes a world of difference. Unless you make positive moves to look the way you desire to look, your struggle to accept yourself just the way you are will continue. The goal here is to look and feel our fabulous best self…and we can be any size to do just that!

Once I began to love the way I looked and to be more confident, I was finally motivated to deal with change. I am now 3-4 sizes smaller than when I began my makeover at age 50. A huge motivator was also the desire to be healthy and avoid serious illness, such as heart disease. When I feel good and look good, I smile a lot and confidently reach out to more people.

Many women I know have a bucket list which begins something like this:

I want to go to New York Fashion Week.

I want to bungee jump off of a bridge.

I want to parachute out of a plane.

I want to drink wine in Napa Valley.

All good…especially the first one…but what I want to do is lose 30-40 pounds. Yes, for health reasons. But, more because I really would like to know…just once in my life…what it is like to be on the other side of the phrase BIG GIRL. It is no longer a self-defeating desire. If it doesn’t happen, I will still experience a joyful, fun life.

Until then….I think I look pretty hot…and, of course, fabulous!

Tunics, Tunics, Tunics!!

Just a couple of years ago, my co-workers scoffed at wearing tunics to work. The thought of wearing leggings, skinny jeans, or ankle pants with a tunic was even more out of the question (to work or anywhere else). These are women from 45-70, and I have watched many of them change their ways.

Tunics are currently popular with this age group. They love the looks from a chic, white tunic to the fun prints. A tunic top is a great way to look your best... casual and fashionable. Some of you may remember I went to a baby shower in February and wrote the majority of moms and grandmas were wearing tunic tops…my favorite was on a seventy-something great grandma in a ecru lace tunic with brown leggings and a headband!

Now, I am planning to spend a week in Chicago with my husband the first of June and I find myself looking to take more and more tunic styles. This no-iron from Foxcroft Collection is perfect. This just might be my first day, shopping outfit. Find this tunic HERE.

But, if you are planning to purchase a couple of tunic tops, buy quickly…they are going fast on many of my favorite sites. I also highly recommend you buy NO-IRON….the longer length can wrinkle very easily if you do a lot of getting up and down.
