Massage Messages, What Do They Reveal?

It would be a tall order for me to find a way to relax for five minutes every hour of work. I fear I would end up stressing out about relieving stress! However, ask me to focus on relaxing during a weekend or at the end of a school semester or over school holidays…then I am all in!

Gigi and I took time to relax today and it was truly amazing! Readers of this blog know that I often mention purchasing items with gift cards. The truth is we work with some amazing parents who are generous with teacher gifts. Today, we headed off to a local spa with gift cards which read….Good for one hour of relaxation! Oh yeah, I am so there.

In fact, spa d'sante was voted a Readers Choice Award by the San Antonio Express News for the favorite spa! We now know why. It was a fabulous one hour relaxation massage. The technician working with Gigi knew immediately by touching her neck that she struggles with migraines and trouble sleeping. The sweet woman working on me knew that I was on the computer most of my day just from working on my shoulders and hands. She recommended an exercise and attention to posture. They asked no questions, just knew these things from working on our tight-knit bodies...and I don't mean fabulously fit kind!

The only downside was that they made us leave! It was hard to go into the hot sun and bright light… now, hours later, I still feel amazing. What a perfect way to go into my twelve days off…which begins tomorrow!

Does It Work or Is It Just About the Shoes?

The Friday before a three day weekend is not the best time to go to the grocery store. I know that, but last Friday chose to ignore my own wisdom, and join in with the long lines of briskets, charcoal, and beer; though all I really needed were a few staples. I ended up looking at three magazines while I waited in the checkout line.

Since, I am on the hunt for some inspiration for casual summer styles, one look jumped out at me because I had all of the pieces in my closet. I styled it…took the pictures…but I really do not think it works and here is why…THE TOP PART AND THE BOTTOM PART DON’T SEEM TO BE A PART OF THE SAME OUTFIT. It looks too much to me like I took a professional style and shoved casual Friday on the bottom. My photographer, Mr. B, said, “Oh I get it, this outfit is all about the shoes!”

Well, it wasn’t …but maybe it should be! I like the shoes! Sometimes inspiration looks just do not work! Anyone disagree or agree for that matter! If it doesn't work, what would make it work??

Today is my last day at work for this school year. I received so many great ideas for my low-cost, low-key twelve days off and I plan to implement several. I started this past weekend with Terri's advice. Within her comment, she said, "...For the first three days I didn't make myself conform to ANY time frame. I let myself sleep as late as I wanted, and then took at nap!..."

That was my Memorial Day weekend, sleeping, napping, and reading a romantic, mystery thriller. So, Wednesday, I will begin with "On the 12th Day of Vacation" posts. Hope you will check in to see whose advice I follow. Make sure you register to win the esahkti giveaway and have a fabulous Tuesday!

Summer Fashion: More Difficult for Some!

Happy Memorial Day to all!! Around Texas, this weekend is the official beginning of summer and it does feel like it outside. I am similar to unefemme who recently confessed she has difficulty transitioning to warm weather wear. I am born and raised in Texas, but really have never liked the heat. I have friends who thrive on it and love the fact we have heat seven out of twelve months! But not me, in my heart I am seasonal, but in my heart I am also a Texan. It is a problem! Selecting cute styles that minimize sweat and don't stick to your skin can often be a challenge!

For a summer school teacher, the wardrobe is a bit more causal-Friday-style for every day. I am much better at styling professional looks than casual looks….tune in tomorrow to see the problems when those looks collide! Spring Trends...Making Them Work!

You guys are the absolute best! All of the ideas yesterday were excellent and I am going to use many of them! You actually have me excited now about my low-key, low-cost 12 days off!!

Tuesday night I was having difficulty getting excited about what to wear to work on Wednesday, so I sat down with a stack of magazines. It did not take me long to find this look in the May issue of InStyle. I looked it over and thought, this is doable…though my version would be darker.

I have worn this duster many times on this blog, but the Liz Claiborne pants were recently purchased for $1.99 on one of my Goodwill SA runs. Like many trends, print pants come and go, so I was pleased to find these with thrift funds. The green top is also a past, on-sale purchase from Chicos…it will continue to be a favorite piece for this summer. My point is that you can follow trends for very affordable prices….it just takes a little imagination!!

Also, this week, I wore the James Avery Bracelet, my sons gave me for Mother's Day! It is so sweet. In Texas, we love James Avery for special occasions!

Low Cost Pampering: Is It Possible?

Alright, ladies, I need your help! Here is my scenario:

1. I am a high school teacher and the regular school year ends next week.

2. I have only 12 days before I begin to teach summer school!

3. It has been a somewhat stressful year and I am feeling fatigue...honestly, I am fried!

4. I have absolutely no extra money for a fun 12 day getaway plus I need to do a lot of work around my house since I have neglected it with overwork recently.

What would you do for no-cost relaxation and fun during the 12 days? I would love to hear any ideas…home remedies...places to go….things to do….beauty or health treatments to feel pampered and rested… read any good books lately?...bring it on!

Blogging the Runway and a Giveway: Extreme Visibility!

Yes, Saturday evening I joined other bloggers of the San Antonio Fashion and Beauty Bloggers (SAFABB) for a very fun and unique event called Blogging the Runway. SAFABB and the San Antonio Fashion Industry Alliance (SAFIA) desired to bring together bloggers, boutique owners, stylists, beauty experts and designers for a collaboration event which focused on spring and summer trends.

A 70-year-old bought this outfit...she has my respect!! It's a romper!

The setting was perfect, Bismarck Art Studio, for an intimate yet artistic atmosphere. We were given front row seats and immediate access to the models, boutique owners, and designers. Bloggers were encouraged to touch the fabrics, feel the accessories, and ask questions on the spot. Calley Gonzalez, founder of SAFIA, said, “We need evenings like this, because we cannot do what we do unless the public notices. The way the public notices is through bloggers and media.”

My favorite look was this jumpsuit from Langford Market, and
they way it was styled.

Both premiere boutiques at the event recognized women 40+ to be an important part of their clientele. “We see more and more women over 40 desiring to look fabulous and they always find something at Langford Market SA to take them fashion forward,” said Victoria Salinas, store manager at the Shops of La Cantera location.

Carol Reyes, owner and designer at Carol Reyes Boutique, told me that I would be surprised at the trendy looks women in the sixties and seventies are purchasing from her. Since becoming a blogger, I do not think I would be surprised...I have seen some fabulous 60+ women willing to attempt any trend.

It was a rare opportunity for bloggers to be given access and encouraged to speak with all participants. The electric energy in the room was as if we were all girlfriends discussing clothes and shoes. I hope to see more of this. One thing is for sure, San Antonio is rapidly becoming a fashion-forward major market!

JCPenneys....There's Still Time, Now Pay Attention!

Listen up, there is something to be said...

“Wall Street doesn’t seem to like J.C.Penney’s new everyday low pricing any better than Main Street does.” - Associated Press, May 17, 2012

Thus was the lead yesterday in the business section as AP announced JCP stock plunged nearly 20% on Wednesday, the biggest decline in four decades. Are you surprised? I certainly was not…in fact, I had been waiting for it. I’ve written more than once on this blog that I did not believe their new strategy would work…and it hasn’t. Kohl’s response to the JCP marketing strategy was nothing short of brilliant when they featured women athletes discussing shopping as their sport.

Women of a certain age, love to shop!!

Brilliant, because it is true. Especially in today’s economy…we want to get a good deal and we want to get great product for that good deal. When I was in advertising and public relations, which is honestly most of my business life, I learned a few sound principals, which should not be forgotten:

1. Women love to shop…it is their sport! We often find pleasure in it and pride in it.

2. Advertising should appeal to as many senses as possible….visual and audio together are powerful….I haven’t seen a JCP television ad where you hear their name.

3. Don’t do too much in an ad…focus on one main message. Their television ads often attempt to cover multiple departments.

4. Make sure your message communicates to the target audience….their Fair and Square message is confusing. They assume that offering constant coupons and sales are unfair…women don’t think that way. Listen, JCP, we want FABULOUS and AFFORDABLE….NOT, Fair and Square.

5. Ellen is a comedian…not a style icon…there is nothing funny about wanting to look great at an affordable price. We take our shopping very seriously!

If you want to sell women clothes, then style some great looks and show us why you are different from the other places. Give up trying to bring in the Forever 21 and H & M customer….baby boomers who want to look and feel younger can be a powerful target audience for you…we have discretionary income! But, we want to look stylish, youthful, trendy, fun, individual and powerful…all in the same wardrobe. Once you pull us in with fashion, then, you can sell us household goods and kids clothes.

We also want SERVICE and sales people who give us attention and are knowledgeable in fashion and style. We shop for many reasons…remember that fun and having an experience are part of those reasons, and we are fiercely loyal to the retailers we love. If you want some specific campaign ideas…let me know…I have some and it is not too late to save the sinking ship. But, if your plan is to do more of the same…save your advertising dollars, it will not work.

The article explains there are future plans for JCP to turn things around. Betsey Johnson is great for the younger crowd…but will they stay for long…younger girls are fickle and only stay until the next stylist hits Target! Do not discount women 40+….the opportunities are great…but you have to understand the audience in order to motivate them to return to a retailer they grew up with. You can tweak the ads all you want, but without a change in strategy, the bottom line will not change.

Street Style San Antonio

When I moderated a panel recently at the Texas Style Council’s Bloggers conference, I met Cheryl Bemis, founder of Fashionably Austin. Cheryl is an over 50, amazing woman, living her dream as a fashion journalist. She was looking to enhance her endeavors by starting Fashionably San Antonio. I offered to help with my own writing and reporting, and with my student video team.

They were so excited to receive their official press passes from Cheryl, and to begin a new venture as a group called TEEN STREET TEAM. We began with two Fiesta videos. I am very proud of them. I believe as they relax on camera, they will only improve and have bright careers in their futures!

Great Wall of China Marathons...We All Face Them!

Over 50? Are we still allowed to dream? I recently heard a woman say, “I wish I had pursued my dreams, but now at 56, it’s too late to even try!”

My daughter, Jessica and her husband, Russell

I was pondering her statement when my daughter’s pictures from running the Great Wall of China Marathon came in to my email. It looked tough and mesmerizing all at the same time. She is living her dreams of seeing the world and experiencing life to its fullest!

The hardest challenges are just an invitation to really live a larger than normal life. Too often, I fear, we choose the small life, because the great wall just seems too big to conquer.

It's necessary to rest along the way when tackling a HUGE challenge!

I watched Jess and her husband, Russ, tackle the steep inclines and the endless rows of stairs….by merely fixating on their tiny bodies against the wall made me realize how small my challenges really are and it is way past time to take them on.

I disagree with the woman who made the opening statement. I may be coming to the game late, but at almost 59, I am going to face the great wall and, hopefully, prove her wrong. I think within these challenges some anti-ageing secrets, as well as, joy can be discovered! I am not giving details about my personal dreams on purpose…but when I reach the top, I will let you know!! I have a huge stairway to climb first before I believe I can set my course. But, it’s past time to start the climb.

Good times at Goodwill!

Good times at Goodwill!! That is exactly what I have experienced lately...good times!! For today’s post, Goodwill SA asked me to shop in the store area called Julia’s Attic. This is where they display items donated from the ladies of our local Junior League and usually the items are top quality!

I had some tough decisions to make after finding several excellent pieces, but again, I look for what will strengthen my personal wardrobe and breathe relief into the budget. After selecting my purchases, the first thing I do when I get home is clean the items. Occasionally, I have taken a couple of the better clothing to the dry cleaners. The majority hit my washer. I never buy anything with stains…just doesn’t sit well with me and not sure if they will come out.

There are too many new or like-new items to discover which makes this treasure hunt worth the time. In fact, I recently brought my husband a brand new Eddie Bauer button down shirt from Julia’s Attic!!

I know I will wear this leopard top a lot this summer. I saw a similar one at Chico’s the other day for around $60….this top was only $3.99!! Then in Julia’s attic, my eye went right to this fun handbag for $9.99. I knew it would be mine the minute I saw it on the shelf….for this outfit, the pattern mixing works. I like pattern mixing best when its done in the same color palette.

Finally, I also found in Julia’s Attic these fun Chico’s capri pants for $9.99. Polka Dots are everywhere and these will make for some casual, summer fun!! All items today were purchased from the Goodwill SA at Highway 281N and Bitters Road! Stop by and like them on FACEBOOK!

Something Different: A Rare Pearl

There he sat, summer after summer, unshaven, sporting a dingy wife-beater and baggy work pants, sitting in front of the window air conditioning unit with a cold Pearl in hand. Often, his other hand gripped a Camel cigarette and he rarely smiled. These are the early remembrances of my Grandfather. For years, whenever an individual or an advertisement would speak the words PEARL BEER, I would think of him.

Fortunately, a recent visit to the new Pearl Brewery site in San Antonio has left a far better impression…and I plan to return to the site as often as possible…especially on Farmer’s Market Saturdays.

The original Pearl Brewery was founded in downtown San Antonio in 1881, and by 1916, it was the largest brewery in Texas. But, prohibition set in around 1919, and the brewery was reduced to producing a product called “near beer,” soft drinks, dry cleaning, and ice cream. It would be another fifteen years before wagons of beer once again left the brewery for distribution.

Competition finally drove Pearl from the shelves, but creative innovation has kept the area alive as developers opened a multi-use complex with that warehouse –type aesthetic found in many cities. Aveda Institute was the first tenant opening in 2006. Now, there are condos, apartments, restaurants, the Culinary Institute of America, boutiques, a park, bike trails, and the Saturday Farmers Market. I loved my visit there…the walk along the San Antonio River in this area is just beautiful.

Dresses and Lessons Learned

Oh...how I wish I could go back to my days as a young mom and right the mistakes I made. So far, I am pretty pleased with the parenting decisions Mr. B and I made…but, taking care of myself would definitely move up the priority list!

To say I was overwhelmed as a young parent is an understatement! Therefore, it was easiest to pull back my hair, wear no makeup, ratty shorts, oversized T shirts, and occasionally step in and out of the shower very quickly… after all there was no telling what the three little darlings might do if I wasn’t paying attention!

Unfortunately, years later, I have learned that a quick brush through the hair, just a little make up, and a skirt or dress are just as easy to pull off as the grunge/comfort look. Part of my journey which led to this blog was that it took until I turned 50 for me to see that it was Pam-time! I am grateful that my only parenting regrets so far involve neglecting myself…and I am grateful to be having so much fun with the rediscovery over 50.

But, as we approach Mother’s Day, if you know a young mother who is putting herself on the shelf…encourage her to take just a few moments for mom each day…to eat right, exercise, and pull on an easy dress or fitted clothing when she goes out…she will feel more like smiling each and every day.

For years, I left dresses out of my wardrobe…now, it is fun to bring them back!! I told you Monday that I hit the BOGO sale at Lane Bryant and purchased the first dress you saw HERE....today is the Second Dress which I needed for a function this weekend...both averaged about $43 each! I also added a belt and topper from Chicos- purchases-past to this dress.

Several commented on my black jackets and suggested different colors etc. I agree with you all...but have no funds to go get different colors, so for now, I will go with the black...I am just not confident enough to go sleeveless..need to do some weight lifting!

Redesign of Knits and Kohls

I have written before how much I like Eileen Fisher! I will spend free time looking through the stylish, carefree knits on her website…and aspire to own some of her clothes one day. For now, I use her site for inspiration.

I purchased the GRACE jacket I am wearing last year at Stein Mart for sixty dollars (a lot less than an Eileen Fisher) I love it and find myself really drawn to knits lately. This is a new phase for me; yet, feels very much like me. My sweet friend Dorothy wore her knit outfit yesterday as well, so I said, “STRIKE A POSE!”

When I have been in thrift stores recently, I always find myself looking at the knits. Really cotton is the best for our warm temperatures (not knits) and I am not a fan of linen which so many ladies wear this time of year. The EF website features linen as well...but I always just drool over the knits.

Also, today is the official Grand Opening of our neighborhood Kohl’s! They have been through a complete remodel and redesign. It might take me a few days to get over to Northwoods and check it out! But, I will check it out.

EBEW: AHoy to Nautical Wear!

Stumped. That is how I felt as I stood in my closet. What to wear for Nautical theme day on EBEW? If I had money, I would buy a gorgeous navy blue blouse and white pants and accessorize the look with bold gold jewelry…

But, alas, no extra money for this challenge. So I went with a red, white, and blue “old-faithful” look…which I guess can be seen as nautical. When my daughter was really little, I loved dressing her in nautical styles..so cute for little girls.

Adventurous, Visible Color!

This quote jumped off the pages of "O" Magazine's May issue. The feature is titled, “New Life, New Look” and introduces us to five women who have been through recent personal makeovers. Ahmad has gone from the dark suits of Wall Street, to the fun of children’s programming and opening a bakery....and, I love her quote!!

Now, I am not anti-black in any wardrobe, but color gives us all a joyful way to mix things up! I do not believe that there is any profession any longer where a ban on color is the rule….if you are surrounded by dark suits, maybe it is time to be more visible, and shake things up a bit!!

This dress was featured on the cover of a recent Lane Bryant catalog, but
just hit the racks in SA last Friday. I just happened to be in the store looking for
a couple of special event dresses, because the sale was a BOGO sale. The minute
they put it out, three were immediately sold. I felt bad that I wasn't one of the many who called
the store for days looking for the dress...but I do love it for summer and I am happy to have it!
The jacket is also Lane Bryant!! The bracelet and shoes are Stein Mart!

Casual Wear: Having Some Fun!

As the end of school nears and the temperatures go up (96 yesterday!), our teachers are allowed to be more casual. Out come the flip flops (don’t tell Tim Gunn…he says only at the swimming pool!) and the shorter pants!

This week was fun…you can tell I love my red denim, since I wear it often! The floral jacket is really old from a thrift shop, but I hang on to it for fun times. The green butterfly cardigan is a Calvin Klein from Marshall’s ….last summer. It works in the air conditioning, but is warm for outdoors.

Of course, I was anxious to wear the necklace I bought for myself at Versona! Love it! All my weekends are busy with school activities until June…so I have to go! But, tell me, what fun things are you up to for May?? Happy Saturday everyone!

Something Different Friday: Versona!

Come help me!! This was the plea from my friend, Karen. She needed another opinion when selecting accessories for her Mother of the Groom outfit for a June wedding. She has purchased a beautiful navy dress from Nordstrom’s…lovely silver shoes from Macy’s…and owns gorgeous diamond studs. So, she wanted to save on a necklace, bracelet, and bag for the night.

She knew exactly where she wanted to shop and I had not been to the store yet, so off we headed to VERSONA. Versona is fairly new to San Antonio (opened last October), and I have not had an opportunity to stop by. I can tell you…I will be stopping by often now. Two big words: TRENDY and AFFORDABLE! I purchased two birthday gifts and one fun necklace for myself…all for $31!!

The sale racks are really sale racks….I found a necklace I loved for $6.99, and I bought my daughter an adorable, leopard print dress for $9.99!!

Versona is sensory overload….so much to see…make sure you allow the time to take it all in! Shoes, belts, scarves, and some clothing….the displays are so much fun! I highly recommend you check it out! And, if you worry, that all of it is over-the-top, Karen found some simple, classic jewelry to compliment her wedding ensemble! She is going to give the Mother of the Bride serious competition!!

The Heat of the Night: What to Wear

Beginning in April the wardrobe predators come out! Temperatures in the 90s are ready to pounce on the most prim and proper to make them sweat like dogs….and the humidity attacks all innocents, immediately lassos their hair.. takes them out and poofs them up!

So, looking great at an outdoor evening event can be a bit of a challenge, but I spent such an evening with friends last weekend and thought you might enjoy some inspiration. The theme was Fiesta and color ruled the night!

Purple, Red Hats and Summer Gloves...and Savings for Teachers!!

I do not know why I like that quote…but I do. I also like purple and would wear it almost every day, if it was acceptable….but then, I would get bored with it and be labeled the PURPLE LADY, and being the SCARF LADY is label enough.

So since, I want to always love purple and never tire of it…I will keep it for an occasional treat!

Gigi and I both wore purple this week…it was fun! She looked quite artistic and scholarly…mine was minimal, but I love this purple, silk jacket I found at Chico’s about three years ago. My jacket is perfect for warm weather....lightweight and cool. Gigi also found her necklace and belt at Chico's and this fabulous bracelet of mine??...YES, Chico's!!

SCARVES: How Many Is Too Many?

130! There I've said it…it’s out there…I confess that I own 130 scarves! Now, before you start accusing me of using my children’s college money on scarves…let’s take a closer look!

I could not find one scarf in my possession that I paid full price for in a retail outlet. They predominately came from these sources;

1. Discount retail: Marshalls, Ross, Stein Mart

2. Sales with coupons: Mostly Kohl’s, some Chico’s, a couple Lane Bryant

3. Thrift: Goodwill and garage sales

4. Blogger accessory swaps…thanks to Reva and Ariane for sending two each!

5. Vintage: Grandmothers

6. Gifts: Once you are labeled the SCARF LADY at school, then a lot of gifts come from students which feed the habit!

Whenever I perform a closet purge, I rarely give up scarves. They are the accessories which can save a drab outfit in a heartbeat…I just never know which one I will need at which time. I have them hanging on a beautiful vintage hat rack…pulled through layers of golden curls. Sometimes, while showering, I will stare at the hat rack (which looks a lot like Cousin It from the Addams Family...ooo, I should get it some sunglasses) and receive inspiration for my daily outfit.

Now, maybe you are able to understand while picking just one scarf for today’s collaboration with Jill and Adrienne was so difficult. But, this is my recent purchase at Ross for $6….it has a Hermes feel to it and spring colors…so today, it is my favorite scarf…but tomorrow, well that’s another day and another scarf!

Recently, Karena hosted a giveaway for an artist in New York who makes beauty out of antique bottles. I won the giveaway and here is the beautiful bottle I selected for the antique grouping on my den mantel. I highly recommend you click on the the Cross Bottle Guy and visit Artie's handiwork.
