One Easy and Cheap Way to Achieve Whiter Teeth

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with achieving movie-star white teeth. I love a man with perfection in his mouth. There is nothing more attractive than someone with a nice smile and bright pearly whites. It catches me off guard when a guy with beautiful, bright, white teeth smiles at me (insert heart-eyes emoji). Unfortunately, I also notice yellow teeth. There are a lot of adults walking around with stained teeth from what they eat, drink, smoke, and not brushing their teeth twice a day.

If you’ve been longing for movie-star white teeth, like myself, the best and most expensive way to achieve your goal is by scheduling to have your teeth bleached professionally at your local dental office. Teeth can instantly become up to 10 shades whiter after one visit. This may require follow up sessions every 6 months to keep your teeth extremely white or the dentist will send you home with a teeth whitening kit for maintenance after your session. These appointments usually start around $500 or higher a visit.

If you cannot afford (or refuse) to spend hundreds of dollars getting your teeth whitened professionally, there is a cheap an easy way to achieve whiter teeth over time and it cost only $1.
Yes, just one dollar! You can see a difference in your teeth in one week. What is this magical product I’m talking about? Hydrogen peroxide!

Hydrogen peroxide is a first aid antiseptic and if you look closely at the small print on most bottles of hydrogen peroxide, it is also a oral debriding agent. Most bottles contain 3% hydrogen peroxide and is safe to use in your mouth. I purchased a 32 fl oz. bottle from my local Dollar Tree for just a $1. Fortunately, my teeth are whiter than most people I know but could be better. I've decided to use the hydrogen peroxide method to whiten my teeth and will take before and after photos to provide an update after a month. Below are step-by-step directions I will follow, just in case you would like to do it with me :-)

Directions

Mix equal parts of water and hydrogen peroxide together
Swish around in your mouth for at least 1 minute (10 minutes is recommended for teeth whitening)
Spit out and rinse your mouth with water
Continue with your normal routine for your teeth (brushing, flossing, and mouthwash)

I will complete this process in the morning and at night. Some people choose to use the peroxide rinse after they brush their teeth because it can be used as a mouthwash. If you choose to use it after you brush your teeth, be sure to throughly rinse your mouth out with water after. According to the bottle I purchased, hydrogen peroxide can be used up to 4 times after meals and before bed time.

Remember, two swishes of hydrogen peroxide a day keeps the yellow stains away! Be consistent with this process and you will begin to see a difference after a week. If you continue to use the hydrogen peroxide non-stop, you will eventually achieve the pearly whites you’ve dreamed of.

Would you believe that I’ve been using the same hair for almost three years? Yes, you read that correctly! It will be three years in October 2015. I’ve curled, flat ironed, washed, conditioned, bleached, and cut this hair. It still looks amazing. I truly believe the only way I can give an honest review is by using a product for a long period of time before giving criticism and three years is a very long time. I am now ready to give the ULTIMATE hair review about this amazing product from Her Imports.

I am a natural hair girl that LOVES to switch it up from curly-kinky twist outs to long luscious flowing hair within days, even hours. I achieve the quick hair changes by wearing wigs. Wigs are a God-send for the black woman with "hair A.D.D." like myself. Wigs also allow me to wear straight hair without applying a lot of heat to my actual hair and risking heat damage.

- Where It All Began -

Back in November 2012, I decided I wanted to buy a wig for the first time to wear to protect my hair. Prior to me beginning my wig search, I only wore my natural hair out or in a sew-in but never a wig. I wanted the best quality hair/wig I can find for a reasonable price. The price for a good long lasting wig normally starts around $350 and can go into the thousand dollar range. Unfortunately, most hair companies recommend customers to use wigs for no longer than 12 to 18 months. I was not feeling to sure about the wigs I saw online because I was not able to touch and see the hair in-person before purchasing it. It was too big of a risk for me and I decided to create a wig myself.

First year of having the wig | November 2012- October 2013

Two of my friends living in the Maryland always praised the hair Her Imports offered. Their sew-ins would always look great. I decided to visit the Her Imports store in Greenbelt and buy hair from them for the first time. I bought the body wave in 16 inch, 18 inch, and 20 inch (this was before Her Imports started selling Brazilian, Peruvian, and other hair textures. I ordered a styrofoam wig mannequin online and bought a black dome cap, needle, thread, and jet black hair dye from my local beauty supply store. I had everything I needed to make my very first u-part wig.

I dyed the hair first and was very impressed with how well the hair took to the color. I blow dried the hair straight and began to create my u-part wig. I used the fold over sew-in technique when sewing the hair on the cap instead of cutting the weft to prevent/reduce hair shedding.

It took about 6 hours to complete the wig and I used all three bundles. My friend sewed the wig on my head and I instantly fell in love. For an entire year, I would go through the process of wearing the wig for about two months... become bored... wear my natural hair out for a month... become bored again... put the wig back on.

In October 2013, I had the wig for a whole year and the ends were beginning to look a little uneven and split due to excessive flat ironing, combing, and brushing the hair. I decided to have my sister (she’s a hairdresser in North Carolina) cut my wig into layers that fit my face and it brought the hair back to life. It was easier for me to curl the hair due to it being a little shorter and I was getting a little nice with the flat iron.

Second Year | Cut into Layers | November 2013 - December 2014

In June 2014, I decided that I wanted to cut my actual hair. I had the cutest bob hair cut and stopped wearing the wig for a while. Unfortunately, that meant applying a lot of heat to my hair. My hair texture changed a little bit.

In December 2014, I decided I wanted length again and had the wig bleached by my sister for my birthday and New Year’s Eve. I loved the way the hair turned out and the hair color looked awesome on my skin tone. I also added wig clips to the wig instead of having the wig sewed on my head because I don’t know how to cornrow and my sister lived all the way in North Carolina. The wig clips allowed me to put the wig on whenever I wanted to.

Bleached by my sister | December 2014 - June 2015

In May 2015, I wanted jet black long hair again and bought a closure and more bundles from Her imports to make another wig. I stopped wearing the first wig and began wearing the new wig.

The temperature these last couple of months have been ridiculous and it was too hot to wear my long black wig. I wanted a bob again but I didn’t want to cut my hair nor did I want to apply a lot of heat on my hair again. I got this idea to take the hair off of the first wig and make another wig.

On July 26, 2015, I removed the hair from first wig cap, washed, blow dried, sewed the hair on another wig cap, and cut the hair into a bob. It took me a total of 8 to 9 hours to complete. The hair turned out AMAZING and I am in love once again. It was the perfect hairstyle and color for the dress I wore to the Black Alumni Ball in Virginia later on that night. The hair is soft, it moves, and is perfect for these hot summer months.

Picture Perfect?

I follow a few Instagram beauty pages. I always thought, "Man, her/his face looks flawless. No imperfections at all." I recently realized that a lot of the Instagram beauty photos are enhanced by editing. Technology has advanced so much that we can now edit photos on our phones in a matter of seconds.

Yesterday, I discovered the app My Cam. The app comes with all types editing features that allows you to slim down your face and waist, make your breasts bigger, eyes wider, and etc. The app has a filter named "whiten" that makes the skin appear a little lighter. All of the features are amazing but I did raise an eyebrow with concern about the filter "pretty" that also lightens the skin. It made me think about what the world views as pretty.

The Clingy Friend: Are You Too Dependent on Your Friends?

I am subscribed to the lovely Ambrosia on YouTube. She recently posted a video about being too dependent on your friends. It sparked my interest because last week I was thinking about a few people I know that are very dependent on their friends. They always have to be with someone and rarely do they spend time alone.

I am the exactly opposite. I can go weeks without being around people and feel okay about it. Sometimes I just need to get away from others and have personal time with myself and my thoughts. Me time is very healthy but too much time alone can be unhealthy at times. There was one point of my life when I did not want to be around anyone. I would dodge my friends or decline their invitation to go out. I eventually got out of this phase. I forced myself to go out more and make myself more available to my friends.

It is important that you find the balance between the two. Too much of anything is not always healthy. Life is all about balance! I still like to have alone time more than others but it is now a healthy amount of time.

DIY: Cute Hair accessory

Saturday I didn't feel like being bothered with my hair. I found some fabric I bought a few months ago and thought it would be cute to use it as a hair accessory. I wrapped the fabric around my head, tied it in a knot in the front, and tucked the sides in. I created a simple cute head wrap that took less than five minutes to create.

Real Life Got in the way... (Part 1)

I’ve been missing in action for several months now on this blog and YouTube. Real life got in the way. I’m talking about real life serious stuff. Where do I begin...

For starters, the most important person in my life became ill. To hide her identity, I will call her “Ana”. Ana became extremely sick. It really messed me up mentally. Nothing really mattered to me anymore. The thought of Ana not being in my life really made me feel like nothing was worth doing or pursuing. I took over a month off from work and cried to myself everyday.

I knew my behavior was healthy. I decided to see a therapist. I wanted to talk to someone that could try to help make sense of everything happening. My therapist was awesome. She understood why I was feeling down. She reminded me that even though Ana was sick life still goes on. My therapist believed Ana ultimately wanted me to be happy in spite of what was happening to her. My therapist also made me realize that it is time that I start doing things that will move me towards a happy and productive life.

In one of my sessions, my therapist asked me what was something I always wanted to do. I told her one of my many career goals and that I wanted to move. My therapist responded with two simple words... DO IT! I told her it was not that simple. She said it was that simple and life is as hard as you make it. Life can also be very simple too.

After much soul searching, prayer, and reading this awesome book called The Alchemist, I decided to move! I set a date to move two weeks after the day I mentally made the decision to move. The timing could not have been worst. The day I was moving, Ana had a life saving surgery. My family thought I should stay until Ana was better. I thought of staying too but we didn’t know when or if Ana would get better. It could take 6 months, a year, longer or never. Ana, surprisingly, wanted me to move. She wanted to see me grow. She wanted to see me happy.

I moved to Maryland with no job and no leads. The first day in Maryland I thought I made a huge mistake. I started to have panic attacks. The unknown was scaring me. I prayed on it. I prayed that my life would make sense to me soon and I will see some sort of progression.

My first week in Maryland, I went on two interviews in Washington, DC. The interviews were with staffing agencies. My friend I was staying with suggested I interview with temp agencies because it was the fastest way to bring some money in until I found something permanent. I hated the idea of working for a temp agency. The thought of being sent to different assignments everyday made me have panic attacks. I like stability and consistency. There was nothing stable about working for a temp agency.

As fate would have it, I was offered a job after one week of moving. One of the temp agencies I interviewed with liked me so much that they asked me to work internally for them. They wanted me to be a permanent employee. The job they offered me was something I did not have experience in but I was ready for the challenge. God was organizing my steps for me and this move was not a mistake. Everything was happening so quickly.

I’ve been working and living in the Maryland/DC area for six months now. It has been an interesting six months. I've been trying to be more social, go out, and have fun. Unfortunately, during the last six months I have not worked on any of my goals and/or hobbies. I lost my focus and I've been wasting time. I'm thankful for my current job but this is not where I want to be. After six months, I am ready for another change...

Losing it for Solange (New Music Video)

I am not ashamed to say that I jumped on the Solange Knowles bandwagon a little late. A few years ago, my friend Asia was doing my hair and we were talking about King Bey's (Beyonce) vocals. Asia shared her opinion that Solange's music is better than Beyonce's music. I am a HUGE Beyonce fan and disagreed immediately. I've never really heard any of Solange's music before but I knew she was not as popular as Beyonce. Asia suggested I listen to Solange's Sol-angel and the Hadley St. Dreams album. I just knew Asia was talking crazy and ignored her suggestion.

A few months later, someone else mentioned how much they loved Solange's Sol-angel and the Hadley St. Dreams album. It reminded me of the discussion I had with Asia and my curiosity grew.I finally gave in and purchased Solange's album on iTunes. I instantly fell in LOVE with her album after listening to it once.

I do not think one sister is better than the other when it comes to music. The lyrics, the tracks, and their styles are extremely different. I now have a love for Solange and her music. She also has become a huge fashionista all over the world and I appreciate her allowing us fans to step into her world with photos of her life on her instagram account.

Unfortunately, Solange canceled her instagram account a few months ago. No worries! She has a new album coming out. Its been 4 years since she released her last album and the anticipation of her third album has grown over the years. A couple of weeks ago Solange released a teaser video of her song Losing You". I LOVED the teaser and was extremely excited to see what the actually video would be. The The full and complete video for the song "Losing You" was released October 2, 2012 at midnight. The video does not give the same exact vibe as the teaser but it is just as amazing. The video is of Solange Knowles in Cape Town enjoying her life. I loved every minute of it. Below are both the teaser and the actual video.

Made-up or Natural: Men don’t know what they want

I've heard men say they prefer a girl that does not wear makeup. These men believe a natural face is much prettier than a made-up face. They feel the makeup does not show the real person and it is all an “illusion”.

What is odd about this situation is that men stare at their televisions, magazines, and favorite internet sites drooling over celebrity women and guess what……THESE CELEBS HAVE CAKED ON HEAVY MAKEUP!

I just want to know why men put soooooo much pressure on real women to be “real” (i.e. natural face, real hair, and natural ASSets) but fantasize and drool over celebrities that are the exact opposite of what they really want? All celebs wear make up. I don’t care how “clear” their skin looks on TV or in a movie, they all have make up on. Why are these celebrities (most normal men will probably never have a chance with) the exception to the natural face, hair, and body rule?

Another thing, why are men so stuck on “no weaves”? all these celebrities with long hair wear one. Doesn’t matter if it is a full sew-in (Tika Sumpter) or just a few tracks clipped (Kim Kardashian) All those long haired beauties have one.

Some men are so pro “real hair” and against natural hair. Men claim they want a girl to show their real hair BUT when they decide to really show their hair and go natural, men, all of a sudden, have an issue with it? What is the problem?! It’s real hair.

This might be considered a rant but seriously men, think about it! You are confusing some of these ladies out there.

This to That: Earring to a Necklace (DIY)

When I was in the 9th or 10th grade my mother bought me gold name earrings. I was living in Providence, RI at the time and going through a "all gold everything" phase. I use to wear multiple gold rings on my fingers and multiple necklaces all at once. In 11th grade, this style came with me when I moved to North Carolina. Unfortunately, my senior year of high school someone broke one of the earrings and I lost the other one. I was not able to wear them again.

One day I got the idea to turn my name earring into a necklace similar to my silver "Resee" necklace. I had majority of the material and tools needed to do it already. The only thing I had to buy was the actual chain which I purchased from Michael's Arts and Craft store. The items used were two different jewelry plier tools, 5 jump rings, 2 pieces of the fake gold chain, and latch to close necklace.

The hardest part of this process was removing the unnecessary gold materials from the actual gold name plate. It took a lot of bending and cutting to get majority of it off. The rest of the process was a piece of cake after that.

I LOVE the way it turned out and it is officially a favorite of mine. The only downside is that the name plate is real gold and the rest of the necklace is not. I had to paint the non-gold pieces with nail polish to prevent it from turning my neck green and the non-gold pieces are turning and rusting already. I plan on buying real gold pieces in the future. In the meantime, I will just keep replacing the chains, jump ring, and latch.

My friends audition for #106thesearch

I have two friends that have submitted audition tapes to become 106 & Park's new host after Terrence J and Rocsi leave. I think it is extremely AWESOME that they both decided to go for it. You never know what may happen.

Chazeen Pemberton has a lot of experience and is no stranger to hosting and interviewing celebrities. She is one of three hosts on her own web talk show, What Would A Man Do. She has also interviewed celebrities such as Idris Elba, Gabrielle Union, LaLa Anthony just to name a few. Hosting 106 & Park would be a piece of cake for her. Chazeen has a fun personality and promotes positivity. Out of all my friends she inspires me the most. Her attitude is there is not she can't do! She is always coming up with different ideas to present to the world.

LR Guest Blogger: Reasons why we are single #2

A notion that haunts many of us on a day to day basis, though we’d like to lead ourselves to believe that the newest trend is as such. BUT here we are with our human nature, which has us longing for a intimacy that many of us cannot find. Why.... Yes that is the real question, why! Well where do you start, where do WE start. A classic cliché such as, times have changed, nope too easy. Perhaps societal differences, but that just derives from times have changed, so no on that easy route. Let’s get real for a moment and look where the problem really is. Ourselves! The last place any of us look, though we stare at ourselves enough in the mirror, or on instagram to know that. Our vanity is our own undoing, we simple spend to much time egotistically involved with ourselves, yet we don’t know ourselves to know the answer at the top of this page.

Indulge me for a moment while I run with the idea of ourselves being the reason why we are single. I know the obvious answer seems to be ourselves, because we can easily pronounce that we are single because we choose to be. And hey, honestly if that is your definitive feeling, then you need not read further this wasn’t for you. But for those of us that can’t see the wool pulled over our eyes, need that much needed reflection. You want real, well here it goes... I’m single because I’m scared. Let that resonate for a second. Scared to hurt, scared to be hurt, scared to commit, and scared to be committed to. What the hell right? Look I’ve spent this last week realizing what the hell is wrong with me, and that right there is the truth. I’ve been hurt before so naturally that bottomless pit feeling you get when someone decides your heart wasn’t worth even wiping their shoes off on. Everyone knows the sick to your stomach feeling. And what about the other end, the guilt and feeling the weight of your actions when you know the truth would tear down everything you’ve built with someone. Seeing that pain you’ve caused someone in their eyes, can crush your conscience. And committing, means you giving your all, 100% of you, to someone else. You ever stood on plank, and the only thing keeping it from snapping is another person on the cliff standing to keep it from falling. What happens when they step away? Your left to fall! And then being committed to, why is that hard? Well, what about the fact that the whole scenario I portrayed being switched. I don’t want to let anyone down...I can’t let her down...

Well that’s enough of me opening my heart canals, but I just ask you to take a moment and consider. I have thousands of reasons why we are possibly single but this was the first one I felt hit home the hardest.

You are at a party, looking absolutely fabulous, and spot a cute guy. You introduce yourself. After a few minutes of conversation you realize not only is this person cute but he has brains too. The feeling is mutual and you two exchange phone numbers.

Fast forward two months and things are going great. Weekly date nights and spending nights at each others places. You both are even having conversations about how much you care about each other. He surprises you at work. Sends you flowers and buys you gifts. You couldn’t be happier!

One day you are talking to one of your friend on the phone and she has something she’s been dying to tell you. She saw your guy at the movies all hugged up with another girl! Shocked by the news, you call and confront your him. You call him a dog, a cheat, and a liar. You tell him you feel betrayed. After you are finish ranting your life way, your boo calmly says, “Why are you getting upset? We aren’t together anyway!” WHOA! That comment leaves you stunned. Okay, so no, you guys didn’t have an official talk about “titles”. It wasn’t necessary, right? After all, you spent so much time together, you thought it was something that was silently understood. He was your man and you were his woman, no questions asked. Unfortunately, it is called DATING!

In 2012, titles in relationships mean everything. The problem with us women is that we assume that men know exactly what we think, feel, and want. Unfortunately, they don’t. We as women sometimes assume that men want the same things we do. This might be true but men are not mind readers. You have to spell it out to a man. Not sure how? No fears! Here are a few tips to help single women tell their “boo thangs” they want to be much more.

Recognize when feelings change

Everything is fun now but there’s going to be a moment when you realize that you really care for him. The other guys you were talking to no longer matter. You start doing things for him that you normally wouldn’t do unless in a committed relationship. Don’t ignore these feelings. Own it! You are at a point where you can’t help but feel the way you feel even if you tried to change it.

Do you really like him or do you like the "sexual activity"?

Women are having the hardest time separating love from lust. After all, he makes you physically feel good so he must love you right? Wrong! I've seen amazing sexual activity make women forget about all the negatives about a man (i.e. Stevie J. and Joseline). He might be your dream lover in the bedroom but a pure asshole any other time or have a whole bunch of other character flaws. If this is the case, no need to have the talk about being in a committed relationship. If you like the sex ,continue to do it but leave it at that… JUST SEX!

Let him know how you feel but DON’T be overly dramatic about it

After you have recognized your feelings and realize it more than just the sexual activity, it is time to let him know. If you want him to be your boyfriend you MUST do this. Don’t wait for him to do it because it may never happen. Please do not prepare a long drawn out speech or excessively tell him you love him. You are not trying to propose, you just want to be in a committed relationship. Let him know you thought about it and want to be in a committed monogamous relationship. Let him know that you like and care about him but don’t become too emotional and scare the poor boy off.

…and if he doesn’t want commitment?

This is not a guide to trick a man into being in a relationship with you. There is a chance he might say he is not ready for committed relationship and just wants to have fun. Yes, it might hurt your feeling because you were hoping the feeling was mutual. No need in crying or going so hard at him he eventually tells you yes just to shut you up. You don’t want someone who doesn’t really want you. Guess what…he’s just not that into you and you have just dodged a bullet. There are plenty more fish in the sea my friend!

The lesson for today, titles means everything. Don’t assume you are in a committed relationship with your guy. Instead of living single and confused, talk to him about it. If he doesn’t want to be in a committed relationship with you at this point, move on and live your best single life!

Reasons why you are single #1

You are single because you want to be a little selfish and there is nothing wrong with that. At least you are being honest with yourself. You should take time to love and spoil yourself. Being single means you have the freedom to do whatever you want. You can get up and go as you please. Being single is even better when you don’t have kids because you are able to move and travel where ever without any responsibilities.

Being single can actually be a blessing if you really think about it. Some people are consumed with thoughts of finding someone and getting married. Their self-worth is based on finding a husband/wife, someone who will love them. True self-worth is based on how you think of yourself. No one else can define your self-worth. If you don’t know who you are or your worth then you NEED to stay single.

Not sure how to build your self-worth? It may take time but it is something that can be done. The first step is to be a little selfish and treat yourself to new experiences on your own. When you start to do things on your own you begin to learn just how strong you are. When you finally learn how strong you are you will feel empowered. Your confidence will build and your self-worth will grow right along with it.

Just remember to be a little selfish, learn how strong you are, build confidence, and empower yourself. Once you do these things you will be strong enough to stand beside your future partner instead of behind him/her. In the mean time, enjoy this single life!

DC Chillin' (Part 2): Kid Daytona - Summer Games Tour at the Beacon Hotel Skybar

After spending a hour or so at Barcode, my friends, Ziggy and Ashley, came over with a few of their friends to say hello. They were on their way back to the Kid Daytona- Summer Games Tour at the Beacon Hotel Skybar and wanted me to come along. One of Ziggy's friends, SmCity, was performing and she was going to support him. Since I am a big lover of music, I decided to join in on the fun.

The Beacon hotel was only a few blocks away from Barcode. Soon as we arrived we stopped at the bar downstairs to have a drink before heading up to the rooftop. While at the bar, Ziggy was showing me her two free pairs of sunglasses given earlier at the event. The sunglasses are by the company Stunner of the Month. The glasses are really cute and edgy. One of the glasses has a gold chain hanging off the frames. The other sunglasses had a cool stripe pattern. The company also gave away "Time To Stunt" slap stick watch bracelets (more photos below).

After we finished our drinks we headed upstairs to the rooftop to watch the performances. I was able to meet a few more of Ziggy's friends. I thought one of Ziggy's friends ( I can't remember her name) was so adorable and I could not help but snap a photo of her outfit. I was also able to meet the person behind Stunner of the Month and took a photo of him.

Performances

We were able to get to the rooftop in time to watch SmCity perform. His stage presences was amazing. The lyrics to one of SmCity's song says, "Let your boss know, I gotta be my own boss!" I really liked this one. Everyone should dream of no longer working for someone else (I do all the time). After his performance, he handed out a CD of his music.

Another artist performing was M3. To my surprise he mention he is from Providence, Rhode Island (my hometown). I became extremely hyped when he mentioned being from RI and I had to shout out that I was from there too. Another girl in the crowd then yelled she was from RI.

The last artist to perform was the main attraction, Kid Daytona. Majority of everyone was there waiting on him to begin. Soon as he came out with the mic in his hand everyone stood up and crowded around. He had so much energy and he really engages the crowd while performing. This was my first time hearing about him. I am glad I was there. I did some research and found out Kid Daytona is from the Bronx, NY and has worked with artists like Estelle, Talib Kweli, and Bun B.

As Kid Daytona's performance was ending the sun went down. It was the perfect way to end the performances for the night. I really enjoyed my time. Attending this tour introduced me to a few new artists I will now be on the look out for.

Amazed and Thank You

I just want to thank everyone that took the time out to watch my videos. Especially this one video in particular, "The Big V: Cleaning Down Under". Who knew a video about vaginas would become popular (I'm laughing right now). I am amazed that this one video has 24k views so far and still going. I only had about 40 subscribers a month ago and now I have 257 subscribers. That is not a lot compared to the youtube stars out there but it is a start and I am amazed and thankful to have that many subscribers. To celebrate, I am putting together a giveaway. I already have some of the items I want to give away but I want to add a few more things before I post a video about it.

I've only been posting videos for a few months. In fact, it has been almost two months since I have posted a video. I have had a lot of technical difficulties with my camera and Macbook. I PROMISE I will get back to the videos this month. Lately, I have been trying to come up with interesting topics that will keep you entertained.

DC Chillin' (Part1): Camille's birthday celebration and Outfit of the day

Most of my friends live in different states but I try to do my best to see them when possible. It is almost like being in a long distance relationship with your significant other. You have to make the effort to make a friendship work when they are not near.

One of my friends, Camille, wanted me to come visit her in Washington, DC to celebrate her birthday last weekend. This worked out perfectly because I was coming to DC that same weekend for another friend's event. I actually love DC! So much to do and a lot of my friends are from there or the surrounding areas (Maryland and Virginia). There is a great mixture of culture and some of the women in DC have a unique sense of style.

That weekend included Imani's spa party event (blog post on it soon), brunch at Ms. K's, Day party at Barcode, and the Beacon Hotel Rooftop for a show. The brunch at Ms. K's and the day party at Barcode was for Camille's birthday. Ms K's brunch was amazing and the scenery outside was beautiful. It is a little pricey ($32 to be exact) but worth it. I was able to see a few familiar faces from college.

After brunch, we headed to the day party at Barcode (which turned in to a night party). Barcode had a $5 Mojito special. They also had a interesting alcohol snow cone drink (looked like a slushy to me).

I left Barcode with my friend Ziggy to head to the Beacon hotel to watch her friend perform. Photos from that event will be posted on Monday in Part 2.

While in DC I wore my DIY high-waisted shorts, DIY sweetheart neckline wrap tube top, necklace from Express, and ring from Mizoutlet.com. I bought the shoes from a store in New York.

We didn't do anything wild or crazy but I had a great time. Any time I spend with friends is fun because there is a lot of laughing, story telling, beauty conversations, style conversations, some arguing, and it is all with love. I snapped several photos of the fun and scenery for you to see.

DIY: Sweetheart wrap tube top (no sewing)

One day, while sitting on my bed, I randomly got the idea to go to the store and buy some fabric to make a tube top. I headed to Joann Fabrics store to find the materials I wanted to use. I decided to buy cotton fabric because it was the cheapest and easy to care for. I found a zebra striped cotton pattern fabric in grey and pink and a white fabric with a flower pattern (flower pattern not visible in photo).

I've never done this before. This whole process was all trial and error. I asked for the associate at the store to cut 2 yards of the zebra pattern fabric and 4 yards of the white fabric. I was scared this would not be enough. To my surprise, when I got home I discovered I had too much fabric (enough to make 5 more tops). It is better to have more than enough instead of not enough incase of errors or mistakes.

How to do it yourself

Now that the fabric was purchased, it was time to create a sweetheart wrap tube top. Unfortunately, because I bought too much fabric, I do not have the measurements of the fabric used. I was doing a lot of guessing and cutting to make sure the fabric was enough to fit me. After I figured out the desired amount of fabric needed, I folded the top of the fabric I would use for the top of the tube top down by about 1.5 to 2 inches. I ironed the fold then pinned it down with safety pins going across. This is to ensure the top has a clean smooth edge.

Using the fabric to create a wrap sweetheart neckline tube top was the easiest part. I put the middle of the fabric on my back and held the two ends of the fabric with my hands (as if I was about to start drying my back with a towel). I wrapped one of the ends of the fabric across one of my breasts and under the other breast. I did the same exact thing with the other end of the fabric. This created the sweet hear neckline. After that was completed, I wrapped the two fabric ends towards my back and tied them in a knot to finish. To secure the sweetheart neck line, I used a safety pin to pin the middle. If you decide to wear a bra with this you can pin the top of the sweetheart neckline to your bra to secure it as well.

I wore this top while I was in Washington DC and paired it with my DIY high-waisted shorts I made. I love the zebra print pattern and the colors used. The print gives the top a little edge while the colors make it very feminine. Photos of the whole entire outfit will not be posted until tomorrow. Until then, I have photos of the DIY top and one sneak peak photo of the outfit with both DIY top and bottom.

This was so easy to create and I plan on using the excess fabric to create more fun things. Is this something you will try? What creative and cute things have you created with fabrics? Let me know what you think :-)

DIY High-Waisted Shorts

Over the last few years I have found myself loving the idea of taking something old and turning it in to something new and amazing. I get inspired a lot by the things around me like nature, magazines, youtube, and etc. It really gives me a chance to see how creative I can be.

Last month one of my friends from Washington DC was in Durham, NC visiting her father. Since I was only 4 hours away, I decided to come visit her. While I was there we took a trip to the thrift store. My goal was to find myself two pairs of jeans that I can turn into high waisted denim shorts. Luckily, I was able to find a pair of old mom jeans that fit good enough around my waist only for $3. The jeans were so unflattering and ugly but I knew that they could be turned into something special.

Since the jeans were found in the thrift store I washed them as soon as I got home. I tried them on to figure out where I was going to cut them. I marked the cutoff mark on the jeans with a marker. The mark on the jeans was used as a guide to cut across the legs of the jeans. Instead of making the jeans shorter, I folded the bottom of the shorts. I like the way the high waisted jean shorts turned out.

I plan on doing this again with another pair of jeans but I want to bleach, possibly dye, and stud them.
