Return dates now 7 Jan 09

We are now stamping return dates of the 7th of Jan 2009 for all the 28 day loans. This is because the Library will be closed for the 2 week Christmas break. This means that if you borrow or renew a 28 day loan item from the library you will not have to return it until 7th of Jan 09.

Restricted opening hours for Friday 14th of November

Sorry, another notice about Library closures. The George Lauder Library will be closed on Friday 14th of November between the hours listed below:

9am - 11am
1pm - 3pm

Searching for images

Do you need to find images for your course work or learning materials? Don't know where to look. Confused about copyright. Help is at hand.

The Internet for Image Searching is a brand new internet tutorial created by TASI ( The JISC advisory service on digital media) and Intute. The tutorial provides useful in information on where to look for copyright free images to use in learning and teaching. There are links to useful image websites and sections on copyright and the benefits of using images.

Library Opening Hours during October Break

Over the October break the Carnegie College Library Service will be open normal hours. Details of normal opening hours are available on the Library Website. If you will not be in College and have Library resources that are due back you can telephone or email the Library Service quoting your student number to renew your loans. This means you won't have to pay overdue fines.

Digimap registration problems

Digimap is experiencing software problems at the moment and as a result the registration function is not working. Those logging into Digimap for the first time will see the following error message:

'You are trying to access a service that requires registration'

Edina are working to resolve the issue and apologise for any inconvenience caused. Check this blog or the Digimap website directly for updates.

Free online access to Sage journals until 31 October 2008

SAGE are offering free online access to all their journals until 31st of October 2008. SAGE publishes journals on topics including business, psychology, nursing and health, science, sociology and education. During the trial period you'll have free online access to 500 journals with content dating for 1999 to present. Well worth a look.

Athens passwords

If you are a returning student or member of staff and are wondering why your Athens password no longer works please read on.

Your Athens password is not working as all passwords expired on 31 July 08 and we will not be using Athens passwords this year as a login method for e-resources. We are in the process of implementing a new login method which will allow you to log into e-resources using your College network username and password. Once working this will make life much easier - one less password to remember!

It is mostly off campus access to e-resources that has been disrupted. Where this has happened we have set up alternative access arrangements to tide things over until the new system is up and running. Details of how to access library e-resources can be found on the e-resources page of the Library website or contact Library staff for further information. We apologise for any inconvenience. Updates on access to e-resources will be posted here and on the Library website.

Libray staff would like to welcome all new students to a new year a Carnegie College. The Library is here to support your course work by providing access to information and learning resources.

There are 2 Libraries in the College, one based at Halbeath and the other at Rosyth campus so feel free to pop in. We have a whole range of resources and services including books, DVDs, daily newspapers and computers. Your class Library induction will give you the opportunity to meet Library staff and find out about what resources you can access so speak to your tutor to find out when your induction is.

Congratulations to Neil Jordan who won Odeon Cinema vouchers in the Library Survey competition. Neil (pictured right) was presented the vouchers by Library Resources Assistant Frances Johnstone (also pictured) at the Rosyth Campus Library.

Neil says

'(I'm a) Ministry of Defence Apprentice. In my 3rd and last year of my apprenticeship. Been studying at Rosyth and Halbeath campus for 3 years. Have been studying HNC Engineering Systems. I intend to move to Bristol in August to progress my career working at Abbeywood. I have enjoyed my time at Carnegie College and would recommend anyone to come study here'

Return books by end of session

Could I take this opportunity to ask students if they could please remember to return all library books before the end of session. The George Lauder Library is open daily from 9 - 5 in the summer recess and students are welcome to use the facilities. However, we would appreciate it if all books were returned so that we can complete our annual stock check and collection management plans for next session.

VADS: the online resource for visual arts

Todays plug is for the Visual Arts Data Service website h ttp://www.vads.ac.uk. The site has has just been relaunched. It offers free access to collections of visual arts images (over 100,000) . The good thing is these are copyright cleared for use in further and higher education. Yippee

Borrow a laptop from the Library

We are launching a new service in the Library. As from today you will be able to borrow a laptop from the Library just the same as you would borrow a book. Laptop loans are available to staff and students. Student loans are for 1 week or 1 day and staff loans are 1 week or 3 hours. Laptops are available from the George Lauder and Rosyth Campus Libraries. Ask staff for further details or see the Library website.

Library trial of economics e-resource

Easter holidays and Library opening hours

The Library Service will be open as normal all through the Easter holidays. This means that if you have Library resources on loan with a return date between the 31st of March and 11th April that these must be renewed or returned by the date stamped on the returns label or fines of 5p per item per day will apply. So how do you avoid the fines if you are not going to be in College?

If your resources are 28 day loans get them renewed next week to keep them over the Easter holidays
You can renew your library loans up to 5 times yourself online using the Library catalogue and your Library Pin, ask Library staff for details.
You can phone the library on 01383 845127 or email library@carnegiecollege.ac.uk. If you quote your student number we can renew over the phone or by email.

Issues Online

The Issues Series is a useful resource providing facts and figures on social issues. You might of seen the booklets on the Library shelves covering topical subjects from abortion to global warming but did you know the Issues Series is also available online?

Issues Online can be accessed from any College computer and by Athens password on any computer outwith the College network. The site contains information on over 60 different topics. On each topic you can find facts, statistics, coverage of important events, information on pressure groups and links to relevant organisations. All that information in one place - we like it! The George Lauder and Rosyth Campus Libraries will be closing at 1pm on Friday 21st of December for the Christmas holidays. We will be re-opening on Wednesday 9th of January.

Remember to get your library resources re-stamped if you want to keep them over the holidays. Renew 1 week loan items this week and they won't be due back until after the holidays.

A good place to look is the NHS Scotland e-library http://www.elib.scot.nhs.uk/. The site gathers together 1000s of health related online websites and resources. All the resources included are evaluated and quality assured - something you don't get with google. Features include:
