Aliens vs Predator Ever since the Predator and Aliens franchises made their debut on the silver screen, people have wanted to see them wage war against one another. In 2004 their wish was granted with an abhorrent film adaptation, followed by another poor attempt in 2007. In an effort to breathe new life into the struggling franchises, Rebellion Games (the very same studio that brought us the last great AVP effort in 1999) is taking a stab at a virtual iteration for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It delivers three short single-player campaigns along with a suite of multiplayer modes and maps.

You’ve got Aliens, you’ve got Predators and you’ve got hapless space marines. The only question left to answer is: is it any fun to play?

Note: For this review I played on an Alienware desktop running Windows 7 with an Intel i7 processor running at 3.2 GHz, 6 gigs of RAM, and a GeForce GTX 260.

While that answer will be stretched into the next thousand words or so, I will start by saying that Aliens vs. Predator has an extraordinarily steep learning curve if you’re playing as either of the extraterrestrials. For that reason, you’re going to want to start with the marine campaign. It’s a much more straightforward first-person shooter that does a good job of introducing you to the world around you. You’ll hear the same radar blips from the films and that telltale machine gun effect has certainly made the jump to the virtual world as well. The audio effects adequately pull you into the Alien world, it’s just too bad that there’s nothing beyond that to enjoy. See, the design of the marine’s campaign is very cookie cutter as far as FPS design is concerned. There’s some fun to be had, and it provides an introduction to the melee mechanics that you’ll need for the Alien and Predator campaigns, but at the end of the day there are just too many better FPS games out there.

Just Cause has all of the makings of a great sandbox game. It has a vibrant, open world with a multitude of environments to explore. There are a huge number of side quests to keep you occupied along with a slew of vehicles and weapons to aid you in your quest to see everything and blow it up. The trouble is that the deeper you delve into the game, the more shallow everything gets and the more prevalent the bugs and faults in the game become. There is fun to be had with Just Cause, but it doesn’t last long enough to warrant more than a rental.

Just Cause shows that it was designed around the console experience. For starters, maneuvering the vehicles is awkward using a keyboard and mouse. Further, the console versions have huge targeting help with a lock on system for every enemy and vehicle in the game. The PC version removes this while you’re on the ground, but retains it while you’re in the air trying to grapple onto a vehicle or using a stationary turret gun. There isn’t any option to adjust this, so the easy run and gun gameplay that adds to the over-the-top feel of the console experience is lacking here.

Just Cause puts players in the role of Rico Rodriguez, a debonaire CIA agent with a flair for capturing the hearts of women everywhere and the skills needed for regime change. Rico doesn’t exactly work as a behind-the-scenes operator. You won’t be brokering deals or throwing silent support to pro-US dissenters. Nope. The powers that be prefer to send Rico in to destroy weapons caches, publicly assassinate people, and generally cause as much chaos as possible.

Now we’re not sure exactly how long it actually takes to topple a dangerous government in real life. If the government of the fictitious San Esperito can be taken as an example, then the entire process takes 21 missions and can be completed in about six hours. That is, of course, if those doing the regime change ignore all of the side quests

Enlisting local help is easy when you’re as suave as Rico.

Most people that enjoy sandbox style games probably wouldn’t set out to ignore the side quests. That’s half the point of playing a game like Just Cause. You’re given a huge jungle world with a loose set of goals for you to pursue at your leisure. The problem with Just Cause, though, is that there really isn’t any incentive to explore the world and try out the various side quests that are available. The main reason for this is that the side quests presented just aren’t engaging, especially compared to the story missions. Exploring the world can be fun and there is a lot to see and cool ways to see it. But if you’re not actively working on quests, then all you’ve got is sightseeing and vehicle hopping.

There are a number of different side quests, some of which are entertaining for a short amount of time while others seem like they were only placed in the game because other sandbox style games have something like them. The prime example of this is the racing missions. What racing has to do with regime change is beyond us, but it’s in all of the other games like Just Cause so it may as well be here. Too bad you’re not actually racing in these side quests. All you do is drive from one checkpoint to the next under a very forgiving time limit. No competition rides alongside you. The only difficult part of these racing missions is finding the next checkpoint which isn’t always obvious

For those of you who don’t know, Miner Wars, like the Descent series, is a game where you play a “mini-spaceship” small enough to travel in mining asteroid tunnels, inside starbases, what have you. You hover in zero-g space until you decide to go up, down, left, right, baclwards, or forwards (hence the “6 degrees of freedom” moniker).

Unlike a traditional FPS, where gravity restricts you to a single surface, in Miner Wars you can go anywhere. So level design opens up to all 3 dimensions, to the extent that there is no absolute “up” or “down”. This allows for more intricate and interesting level design. While it can be a bit disorienting at first, but it also makes things more fun. Your enemies could come at you from any angle.

Graphics are pretty good for this game, with the exception of explosions which are decidedly low-res. Voice acting is well-done, although the story is convulted and very disjointed.

There’s a spectacle to Dirt Showdown that flies in the face of racing tradition: the jumps, the drifts, the squealing doughnuts, and the blinding flash of fireworks. With each crumpled bumper and shattered windscreen, a vast arena crowd roars, eager to be wowed not with the shaving of valuable seconds from a lap time, but with pyrotechnic-laden displays of driving that are as much about showmanship and destruction as they are about skilful precision. It’s an intoxicating mix that forgoes the difficulty of simulation for a thrilling and beautifully presented arcade ride.

The biggest difference between Showdown and its predecessors is that the handling is surprisingly forgiving. You can whip your car around the tightest of corners without ever easing off the accelerator, while even the most dramatic twirls of the steering wheel don’t send you hurtling headfirst towards a barrier like they used to. But there’s still a balance to be found. The skill lies in the timing of your turns and the judicious tapping of your hand brake and boost to perform impressive drifts and show-stopping doughnut rings. It’s a dramatically different feel, but one that lends itself beautifully to the events at hand.

Some, like the Hoonigan events, are all about precision and showmanship in licensed cars. The destructible blocks of Smash Hunter are intricately arranged to reward delicate turns and tight drifts, while a timer for high scores keeps the pressure on, and your speed up. There’s more challenge to be had in Trick Rush events, where drifts, doughnuts, and jumps are scattered throughout cleverly designed environments. With each trick your multiplier climbs ever higher, resulting in a mad dash to rack up points before the timer runs down.

Most challenging are the head to head Gymkhana events, where you take on the mighty Ken Block in a trick-filled arena course. The turns are tighter, the jumps larger, and the pyrotechnics even wilder. But while the bright, neon fireworks and explosive confetti cannons certainly add excitement to the proceedings, it’s the process of improving bit by bit, drawing ever closer to success and perfection that makes such events so entertaining and incredibly addictive.

Narco Terror is a twin-stick shooter in which you blow things up. A lot. That’s really the most apt description I can give. As far as twin-stick shooters go, it doesn’t add much to the formula, but its premise of focusing less on precise aiming and more on strategically causing things to explode is a welcome twist. At its best, Narco Terror is a fun distraction, particularly when played with friends. At its worst, it’s a nearly unplayable storm of death after death. Fortunately, it’s much more commonly the former than the latter.As its title suggests, Narco Terror puts us in the role of an FBI agent on a one-man offensive against a major drug cartel. This is, however, the only element of the story that is ever really expanded upon, and Narco Terror throws extra characters like his daughter or best friend (who have never been mentioned before) in when it needs an excuse to change backdrops. The meager story serves as an effective enough backdrop to what quickly becomes an over-the-top explosion-fest.

In recent years, shooters have become homogenized. There used to be a wide range of different games to choose, from run-and-gun action titles to slow-paced tactical shooters focusing on strategy and tactics, but now most shooters follow the same model of big set pieces, regenerating health, linear levels, and cinematic experiences. The realistic tactical shooters with in-depth planning have almost entirely disappeared in recent years.

This project, working title TAKEDOWN, aims to change that. Now that I’m done with the title, I know plenty, but if you want me to boil it down for you right off the bat: Front Mission Evolved is just an uninspired game that’ll only appeal to the hardcore mech-heads out there.

Gothic 3 Gothic and its sequel, Gothic II, offered a challenging role-playing experience but had technical issues that caused the games to run poorly. You can pretty much say the same thing about Gothic 3, although the sequel is better in some areas. It still suffers from performance problems, especially on computers that don’t have a lot of horsepower under the hood, but its strengths make it worth a look if you have a computer that can handle it and you’re in the market for a challenging, open-ended game.

Like the previous games, Gothic 3 places you in the role of the series’ nameless hero, a soft-spoken adventurer who can eventually pursue one of three career paths: warrior, archer, or wizard. The game’s story–which puts you in the middle of a nation enslaved by brutal orc oppressors–may seem a bit opaque to players who haven’t played the previous games, but those who have will appreciate the references to characters and items from Gothic and Gothic II. Like in those games, the nameless hero starts off with little to no basic training in the game’s many different profession skills (which include various schools of sorcery, mastery of different hand-to-hand weapons, and animal skinning, among other things), and can eventually learn these skills by gaining enough experience to gain levels and visit advanced trainers who can teach him.

Gothic 3 makes some real improvements over the previous games. For instance, though you’re still expected to progress through most of the game by taking quests that are kept in a less-than-organized journal, the overall quest structure is much better defined and more cohesive. You’ll find yourself taking on fewer long-term quests that require travel to many different areas and more short-term, local quests whenever you enter a new area. Though they’re sometimes a bit shallow and often require you to kill a certain number of monsters or retrieve certain items, these shorter-term quests are much easier to keep track of, and they’re designed to keep you moving throughout the game’s vast world in a logical progression–one that can actually affect how the world is laid out.

A lot of Gothic’s real estate consists of wilderness broken up by small encampments led by a powerful chieftain character. If you can gain enough of that village’s confidence by completing faction-specific quests, you can get the chieftain’s attention and, usually, a quest to exterminate an enemy village, which will then be repopulated by the faction you were working for. But the world of Gothic is huge and the game is quite long, so you can still wander all over the place and get lost if you care to, though if you wander too far, you may be ambushed by tough monsters that will make short work of you.

In addition, the combat and control schemes in Gothic 3 have been revamped to be much more accessible and to make more intuitive sense. Gothic 3 uses a simpler “one-click-performs-one-swing” system that makes combat a lot easier to get into, though parrying attacks with a shield doesn’t seem as effective as simply dodging backward, which gives the game’s melee combat a stick-and-move rhythm that requires you to dodge back from your enemies and weave in to swing your sword. It may seem a bit shallow, but it’s not the only option; you can also choose to bring a bow or, later in the game, sorcery into battle. You can get into ranged combat with an easy-to-use first-person shooter interface that lets you point and shoot at your foes.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Need for Speed Most Wanted. While I may not be overly enamored with the multiplayer aspect of the game, the single player has kept me more than entertained. Mass Effect 3 throws you back into the role of Commander Shepard, the first human Spectre that has, at this point in the story, gone above and beyond proving his (or her) commitment to galactic order. After reluctantly working for the xenophobic human-first organization Cerberus and jumping through the Omega-4 Mass Relay to fight the Collectors at the center of the Milky Way in Mass Effect 2, Shepard’s greatest challenge still lies ahead.

Sacrifice. It’s Mass Effect 3′s major theme, and rightly so. After all, the reapers were coming–it was only a matter of time. And now, those sentient space vessels are here, and with them, a galaxy’s worth of destruction. Mass Effect 3 brings the sound and the fury, but these aren’t meaningless shows of laser fire and alien devastation. The series has earned its right to showcase such destruction by drawing us close to its characters and teaching us of its universe.

Mass Effect was about time and place; you discovered the Milky Way’s landmarks and races, guided by memorable characters like Tali and Garrus, who served as representatives of their cultures. Mass Effect 2 was about people; you learned more about old friends and made new ones, and drew each of them close to your heart. Mass Effect 3 fearlessly manipulates those personal bonds, forcing you to make difficult choices and consider the greater good–even when the greater good isn’t always clear. The game is structured less like Mass Effect 2 and more like Dragon Age II: three dramatic acts, each concluding with major events that might leave you in tears, or at very least, shivering from the emotional impact.

Blood Knights For an amusement emphasizing vampires and werewolves, Blood Knights is about as close as possible to an amigo cop motion picture.
