As I have been trying to improve my Mandarin, I have been listening to Chinese pop music. Most of the stuff I find consists of schmaltzy ballads, the accompanying videos containing pretty people doing vaguely romantic things in soft focus. Here are some exceptions to that pattern.

Chinese words have to be sung, with proper rising and falling tones, for them to be understood correctly and I wondered occasionally how the speech melody is related to the musical melody. Before posting this entry, I googled the answer (wordreference forums). Normally, in pop songs the musical melody erases the speech melody. Only with important phrases, do songwriters try to make the musical melody match the natural speech one. Cantonese songwriters do this more often. So I imagine at least the first line in the refrain in the last video has the two melodies in sync. It is very catchy.

Understanding Homo Sapiens

The wolf is somewhat perplexed. He shares this planet with many members of the two-legged species, yet he fails to understand them. In particular, he fails to understand the current irrational panic he sees amongst them and their general willingness to be treated like frightened sheep.

Although the toppling of the two towers in New York seven years ago made spectacular television, it was an event that took decades to pull off and has not been repeated. The group behind it has been organisationally and financially crippled. So why is the subject not long forgotten? Why the panic? Surely the humans realise that they are as likely to be hit by a meteorite than die from a similar terrorist attack? Indeed, cars, cigarettes and junk food are a far, far greater threat to their health.

Do these humans not realise that the way to respond to the threat of a repeat of 9/11 was to increase pilot cabin security in airplanes, moderate grotesque excesses in foreign policy and infiltrate terrorist organisations? Can they not see that the number ways to bump off a few hundred humans in a modern city is infinite, thus rendering the billion-dollar apparatus of security goons concentrated only at airports and occasional railway stations totally pointless, or worse, an aid to the terrorists, who would love to cause constant fear and inconvenience amongst the population.

Why do these humans, to counter an almost non-existant terrrorist threat, give their politicians the powers to start illegal wars killing millions, to torture and otherwise suspend civil liberties and snoop on citizens lives to an extent never seen before? Do they have no sense of perspective or history? Do they believe that the current generation of politicians and officials are now angels and that, unlike all previous generations of politicians and officals, they will not grossly abuse such powers?

Could some member of the species homo sapiens explain these things to a baffled wolf?

Having put a link up for a track by the Argentinian Jorge López Ruiz, I am under some obligation to explain the words that give it its sense of time and place. So here is an attempt to translate the poem by José Tcherkaski that starts the track.

Notes

Orilla, malevaje, boliche, compadre, mateo, bandoneón, and milonga are all Argentinian words.
Pompeya and Palermo would seem to be neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires, as well as places in Italy. I have no idea what they are like but according to Wikipedia Nueva Pompeya has a strong tango tradition.
Mateo would seem to mean swot or smart alec in Argentina but that seems strange in this context. Perhaps, it has another meaning.

Holes in the Blogosphere

Some blogs could disappear from the net and not be missed; others leave gaping holes. This was supposed to be a post about two gaping holes in the blogosphere as seen by the wolf. Happily, upon checking the links for the post, it turned out that one is a hole no more. Apart from earning the wolf's undying admiration, the two blogs could not be more different.

This is the blog that has sprang back to life. It is penned by an Iraqi woman, writing under the name of Riverbend. Her entries started in 2003, the year of the US invasion, and became ever more intermittent. After April 2007, there were six months of no entries and I really feared the worst for the author.

The blog documents in compelling personal fashion the life of a woman who used to be a computer programmer living in the modern, bustling city of Baghdad, but who is slowly pushed by the US invasion into the bowels of hell. She loses her job; she cannot go out on the streets unveiled or without male accompaniment, and she has to deal constantly, every day for years, with shortages of petrol, water and electricity. She fears for her personal safety on the streets, learns of atrocities committed upon her relatives, and eventually, in the face of increasing sectarian violence, feels there is constant danger even in her own home. When the blog entries pick up again in September 2007, she has fled with her family to Syria. Her predicament is still precarious. The Syrians, facing an incredible burden on their country with 1.5 million refugees, only renew the Iraqis visas for one or two months, so the Iraqis never know when they may be thrown back into the orgy of violence that the Americans have created in Iraq.

I loved my job- I was *good* at my job. I came and went to work on my own. At 8 am I’d walk in lugging a backpack filled with enough CDs, floppies, notebooks, chewed-on pens, paperclips and screwdrivers to make Bill Gates proud. I made as much money as my two male colleagues and got an equal amount of respect from the manager (that was because he was clueless when it came to any type of programming and anyone who could do it was worthy of respect… a girl, no less- you get the picture) ...

... We paused on the second floor and stopped to talk to one of the former department directors. I asked him when they thought things would be functioning, he wouldn’t look at me. His eyes stayed glued to A.’s face as he told him that females weren’t welcome right now- especially females who ‘couldn’t be protected’. He finally turned to me and told me, in so many words, to go home because ‘they’ refused to be responsible for what might happen to me. -- August 24, 2003

Nearly four years ago, I cringed every time I heard about the death of an American soldier. They were occupiers, but they were humans also and the knowledge that they were being killed in my country gave me sleepless nights. Never mind they crossed oceans to attack the country, I actually felt for them. Had I not chronicled those feelings of agitation in this very blog, I wouldn't believe them now. Today, they simply represent numbers. 3000 Americans dead over nearly four years? Really? That's the number of dead Iraqis in less than a month. The Americans had families? Too bad. So do we. So do the corpses in the streets and the ones waiting for identification in the morgue. Is the American soldier that died today in Anbar more important than a cousin I have who was shot last month on the night of his engagement to a woman he's wanted to marry for the last six years? The first evening we arrived, exhausted, dragging suitcases behind us, morale a little bit bruised, the Kurdish family sent over their representative – a 9 year old boy missing two front teeth, holding a lopsided cake, “We’re Abu Mohammed’s house- across from you- mama says if you need anything, just ask- this is our number. Abu Dalia’s family live upstairs, this is their number. We’re all Iraqi too... Welcome to the building.”

It is a wonderful mixture of the absurd and razor-sharp satire, in glorious psychedelic green and purple. It is written by three characters: the intrepid reporter, Fafnir, the ever hungry and angry Giblets, and the Medium Lobster, a superior being who transcends time and space. The last entry was on July 12, 2006. Here is a sample of what we are missing:

Coming at Seven

Warning: this might be what they call creative writing. It will not, in fact, make much sense unless you read this blog entry first.

That cutie art historian has invited you around for dinner at seven.You had better get your act together, if you plan to get there on time.

5.30 pm In typical journalistic style, you send off yourlatest piece 5 minutes before the deadline, then dash for the office door before they corner you for something else.

5.45 pm Pass by the wine shop to pick up something decent. With luck that is what you will have with the meal. You never can tell. Sometimes these cuties have the finest of taste, at other times they drag out a bottle of cheapo Hunter Red Valley. You know you are in trouble when they offer you the complimentary packet of pretzels that comes withthe bottle as an appetiser.

6.15 pm You emerge from a shower and pass by the bathroom mirror. Not a bad sight you think. You may have looked slightly trimmer in younger days, but you figure you are ageing well. You have had few complaints from recent female companions.

"Be prepared", you think as a former cub scout, and make sure you have a few condoms with you. At least, if you whip out a condom at the appropriate moment you avoid tedious discussions about which of you has suitably prepared for such events. What is more, some of these cuties have the temerity to launch into an interrogation of possible STD's and your past sexual history. Just wave the condom at them.

6.45 pm You are sitting in the car thinking of a few gambits to steer the conversation away from art. We cannot all be the world's greatest intellectual, but maybe she will not be too impressed by the fact that you canniot distinguish a Titian from a Tintoretto. If the gambits fail you will be forced to fall back to playing the rôle of an ignorant but charming philistine.

6.55 pm. The traffic is worse than expected. You coud be a few minutes late. "But hey," you think, "it is fashionable to be late!"

6.59 pm.Then it happens! Totally unexpectedly you are transported by a warp in the time space continium to C6B7, a planet at the other end of the universe. The bug-eyed aliens that live there were impressed with your latest piece for the newspaper. They imagine it provides just the insight into the absurdities of human behaviour they have been seeking for centuries.They place a helmet over head and interrogate your brain cells directtly about the vagaries of homo sapiens.

7.30 am January 12, 2056 You land in Tibetan goat stall, much to the amazement of the goats there. Somehow the bug-eyed aliens programmed the coordinates wrongly as they try sportingly try to get you to your date on time.

12 midnight The bug-eyed aliens get their act together and transport you back to your car in your home town. You pull up to the cutie's house and dust off the straw from the Tibetan goat stall. You look at your watch and groan.

As she opens the door, fuming with impatience, you figure you had better breeze it out. "I guess I missed the camparis, I hope I made it in time for the handcuffs".

“By the end of 2007 it is estimated that more people will live in cities than rural areas for the first time in history.” (BBC report on Global Environment Outlook). An epochal moment. When the wolf is not roaming the forests, he too lives comfortably in a smallish town. So this move to taste the fruits of civilisation must be welcomed. However, the rest of the report makes it clear that the desire of the six billion human inhabitants of planet earth to live the lifestyle of current US suburbia will not be realised. Or if it is, it will not be sustainable for very long. Maybe the move from the farm to city is not such a good idea. In fact Jared Diamond contends the move from the open savanna to the farm in the first place was a catastrophically bad idea:

Archaeologists studying the rise of farming have reconstructed a crucial stage at which we made the worst mistake in human history. Forced to choose between limiting population or trying to increase food production, we chose the latter and ended up with starvation, warfare, and tyranny. Hunter-gatherers practiced the most successful and longest-lasting life style in human history. In contrast, we’re still struggling with the mess into which agriculture has tumbled us, and it’s unclear whether we can solve it.

So what do my blog readers think. Should we go back to the bucolic more sustainable life on the farm? Or should we go back to the Eden-like existence of the the hunter-gatherers? Or should we stay in the city and keep partying like it is 1999?

Un momento especial. Cuando el lobo no está corriendo por el bosque el también tiene una vida confortable en una ciudad pequeña. Pero el resto del informe deja claro que el deseo de los seis billones de habitantes humanos de este planeta de llevar la vida que ven en las ciudades modernas de los EE.UU. no es alcanzable. O si se alcanza no va ser sostenible. Quizás la migración a la ciudad no es tan buena. Además le autor Jared Diamond piensa que la migración desde la vida de caza-recolección hasta la vida agrícola era un catástrofe sin igual. ¿Que piensan los lectores de esto blog? ¿Mejor la vida idílica rural? ¿La vida casi del jardín de Eden de los cazadores recolectores? ¿O seguimos festejando en la ciudad hasta el final?

Wenn der Wolf nicht durch den Wald umherschweift, wohnt er auch bequem in einer kleinen Stadt. Die Bewegung hin zur Stadt muß er also begrüßen. Der Bericht macht aber auch klar, dass die Sehnsucht von den 6 Milliarden Einwohnern des Planeten nach dem Lebensstil von modernen USA wird nicht in Erfüllung gehen. Oder wenigstens nicht auf langer Sicht. Der Planet wird es nicht aushalten. Vielleicht ist die Bewegung nach der Stadt nicht so wünschenswert. Zudem meinter der Autor Jared Diamond, dass die Bewegung zu Landwirtschaft katastrophal schlecht war. Was meinen meine Blogleser? Ist das Leben auf dem Lande besser? Oder wären wir es besser haben im Eden der Jäger und Sammler? Oder feiern wir bis zum Ende in der Stadt?

As the wolf has commented before, the world is sorely lacking in colourful manhole covers. Not only have the citizens of São Paulo realised this, but also the Japanese. Now if only the covers in the wolf's home town could be a bit more soulful.

Keeping up with Little Red Riding Hoods

Feeds? Feed readers? When I chatted to people after I wrote the 360 vs Blogger post, I got the impression that most of my usual blog readers do not know what a feed or a feed reader is. If you do, in fact, already know, you can skip this post entirely. For the others, these might be things worth knowing about. They help you keep track of things on the web very quickly and efficiently. In particular, they will tell you when the wolf has written an exciting new post in his blog. What more could you ask of a piece of software?

Atom Chicklet Sign

A feed (sometimes known an RSS or an Atom feed) is a list of new things on a web page or a web site. It is in a standard format and it is intended to be handled by special software and not directly viewed by web surfers in their browser. Whenever you see a link marked feed, RSS, Atom or more popularly these days the chicklet sign (see above), you know the page you are viewing has a feed. Current pages with feeds include:

Almost all 360 blogs,
Almost all Blogger blogs,
Almost all news sites such as the BBC, Tageschau, El Pais, and O Globo.
Flickr has feeds for users' photostreams, groups and tags.
YouTube has public feeds for currently popular clips and hidden feeds for tags and users.
You can create feeds out of some searches on Google, such as those on news, blogs and video.

You can read the feads with a program that runs on your own computer, be it Windows, Mac or Linux. However, the wolf can offer no guidance on which is the best of these programs, as he has hardly used one. Instead, he has used two web based services: Bloglines and Google Reader. These have the advantage that they keep connecting to the third party web sites looking for updates, even when your computer is switched off, and they know which feeds you have read, even when as you switch between reading the feeds at home, or at work, or on your mobile phone.

Bloglines and Google Reader or more or less comparable. They both offer the following features:

The main feature is that they continuously go the web sites you subscribe to and check for updates in the feeds. If Little Red Riding Hood has just written 10 new blog posts and Goldilocks five, you will see that immediately when you visit the main page in Bloglines / Google Reader.
The second main feature: they know which entries in the feeds you have read. So if you only have time to read the first 5 of Little Red Riding Hood's torrid blog posts, these feed readers will notice that and next time you can go straight to the remaining posts.
Both services give you some help on finding interesting feeds.
Both services allow you to view images and embedded YouTube videos in the feeds.
Both services have specially tailored versions for mobile phones.
Both services have buttons to add to your browser and give you one click subscription to new feeds.
Both Google Reader, and I think the beta version of Bloglines, load the feeds lazily in the background. Thus if Little Red Riding Hood has just come back from holiday and put 3 million photos in her Flickr photostream, only the first 20 will be turn up immediately in your browser. The others will get loaded as you scroll through the feed.

To give you a feel of how this works in action, imagine Ditta goes on a trip to one of the beautiful wine growing areas of Germany, currently bursting with autumnal colours: Naturally, she takes some photographs. If you are lucky, 360 will inform you about these new photos in the Updates from Friends pages. If you have more than five or six friends, there may be several pages to click through. Then you can click on Ditta's icon, to be shown this:

Alternatively, I can see if Ditta has added new photos on Flickr via Google Reader:

No pictures of the trip yet, just pretty shoes and feet. But I think that is, at least, a bit better than Photo unavailable.

To return to the theme of a previous blog post, it really does not matter if Little Red Riding Hood tells of her burning desire to meet a wolf in the forest in a post on Yahoo 360 or Blogger. Google Reader would present the same text in any case. And so with the aid of 21st century feed reading technology, the wolf would soon hear her call.

This is true for the leaders in such fantasies, as they have no need to negotiate or persuade, just use and control. It is even more true for the led, as they give up all responsibility and decision-making to find freedom in their own slavery. What do the wolf's blog readers think? Yesterday the Wolf tried to post to his 360 blog. When he pressed "submit", the blog no longer appeared on his 360 page, making it invisible to all the world except him. Since the blog entry was about the Barbican's latest attempt to boost its attendance figures by exhibiting artistic pornography, the paranoid wolf thought that some automatic censoring software was at work. In order to get around this roadblock in his blogging career, he decided to move his blog posts to Blogger.

In the end, it turned out no censoring software was in operation. There appears to be a bug in Yahoo's blogging software. If it cannot handle the last entry you submitted, presumably because of some formatting error, your blog disappears. You can bring it back by submitting another entry. Censorship or bad programming, neither is really optimal, and now that the wolf has had a chance to try out the Blogger he asks himelf which is better, Yahoo 360 or Blogger.

The Advantages of Blogger

The censorship is probably not as bad. I suspect the worst that happens on Blogger is that your blog is made open only to people you invite. In Yahoo, if someone clicks the abuse button a couple of times, you risk losing your Yahoo account without notice. Goodbye blog, goodbye Yahoo mail, goodbye 360 contacts.
Blogger is a really polished way to publish a blog. The wolf has not had a chance to try out all its features, but the following caught his attention:

The ability to define templates for blog entries, such as the one the wolf is currently using with the three flags for the three languages.
The ability to keep drafts of posts. This longish post was edited in two sessions. In 360, you have to publish the half-baked entry or find a way to store the draft on your computer and upload it again later.
Your readers can search your blog entries.
Your users can leave links in the comments.
There is a well-documented way for you to access your blog via a computer program, making it easy to archive your posts or submit them via a word processor.

Blogger does not make your blog disappear through flaky mysterious software glitches. Apart from yesterday's bug with the blog not appearing on the front page, the Wolf also found that several of his old blog posts would not display in 360 itself; he had to go to Google's cache to get a copy.

The Advantages of Yahoo 360

Yahoo 360 is more of a social network. Although Blogger belongs to Google, who also offer Orkut and Google Groups, the Google sites do not gel together in the same way as Yahoo's do. The wolf's impressions is that it is easier to get to know interesting people on the Yahoo sites, than on the Google ones.

So where should the wolf continue blogging: on flakey, censoring but sociable Yahoo, or on some blogging site that truly deserves the name?

P.S. The wolf copied all the comments from Yahoo over to Blogger. If anyone is irritated by this, the Wolf will delete them. At first, the wolf thought he might be making public comments that were only viewable by the select circle of 360 members, but, in fact, all the blogs on 360 that are not restricted to friends only are public and are indexed by Google.

Gestern hatte der Wolf versucht, einen Eintrag in seinem 360 Blog zu veröffentlichen. Als er den "Submit" Knopf klickte, war sein Blog nicht mehr auf seiner 360 Seite zu finden. Der Blog war also für alle außer dem Wolf nicht mehr zugänglich. Der Eintrag ging um den Versuch von der Barbican Galerie in London, die Besucherzahl zu erhöhen, indem sie pornographische Kunst ausstellt. Der Wolf dachte also, das Zensursoftware den Blog entfernt hatte. Um dieses Hindernis im Wege seiner Blogkarriere zu umgehen, kopiert der Wolf seinen ganzen 360 Blog nach Blogger.

Es stellt sich heraus, dass kein Zensursoftware im Spiel war. Es gab einfach ein Problem beim Veröffentlichen des Eintrags. Wenn 360 nicht mit dem Format des Eintrags umgehen kann, lässt es einfach den ganzen Blog verschwinden. Man muss noch einen Eintrag veröffentlichen, bevor der Blog wieder erscheint. Egal ob durch Zensur oder schlechtes Programmieren, das alles ist nicht so optimal und der Wolf hat jetzt Erfahrung mit Blogger. Welches ist also besser fürs Blogging: 360 oder Blogger?

Die Vorteile von Blogger

Die Zensur ist wahrscheinlich nicht so schlecht. Das schlimmste, was passiern könnte, ist, dass der Blog nur für Eingeladene zugänglich wird. Auf Yahoo könnte ein Paar Klicks auf den "Abuse" Knopf dazu führen, dass der Yahoo Account ohne Warnung gelöscht wird. Adios zum Blog, Adios zu Yahoo Mail, Adios zu deiner 360 Freundeliste.
Blogger ist eine elegante Weise einen Blog zu schreiben. Es hat zum Bespiel folgende Features:

Man kann Schablonen für Einträge definieren, wie zum Beisipiel eine mit den drei Fahnen für die drei Sprache, die der Wolf benutzt.
Man kann Entwürfe speichern. Dieser Eintrag selbst würde in zwei Sitzungen geschrieben. Mit 360 muss man den halbfertigen Eintrag veröffentlichen oder einen Weg finden, den Eintrag auf dem eigenen Rechner zu speichern und dann später wieder hochladen.
Die Leser können durch die Einträge suchen.
Die Leser können Links in den Kommentaren hinterlassen.
Es gibt eine klar definierte Weise den Blog mit einem Computerprogramm anzusprechen. Dadurch kann man die Einträge leicht archivieren oder Einträge per textverarbeitendes Software veröffentlichen.

Blogger ist nicht so fehlerhaft wie 360. Außer dem Problem mit dem verdeckten Blog auf 360 hat der Wolf auch Probleme seine alten Einträge in 360 darzustellen. Er musste sie also vom Google Cache holen.

Die Vorteile Yahoo 360

Yahoo 360 ist einfach geselliger. Obwohl Blogger der Firma Google gehört, die auch Orkut und Google Groups anbietet, hängen die Dienste von Google nicht so schön zusammen. Der Eindruck von diesem Wolf ist, dass es auf Yahoo leichter ist, interessante Leute kennenzulernen.

Wo soll denn der Wolf weiterbloggen? Auf dem fehlerhaften, zensurierenden aber geselligen YahooWebsite, oder auf einem richtigen Blog Website?

P.S. Der Wolf hat all die Kommentare von Yahoo auf Blogger herüberkopeiert. Wenn das jemanden stört, wird der Wolf sie löschen. Die Kommentare sind aber schon ziemlich öffentlich und man kann sie zum Beispiel durch Google finden.

Whither 360?

About a week ago, Yahoo announced they were opening Mash for beta testing. This represents another foray into social networking, an area where they already have Yahoo 360. The news has prompted this wolf to ask himself several questions.

What is Mash like?

Malice in Wonderland has good description of the features of Mash in her latest blog entry. There is, therefore, no need for me to list them again here. Below is a screenshot of my own unpimped and Tamagotchi-free page.

I think that some of the weaknesses that are mentioned by Ms Malice will probably be fixed by the time Mash gets out of beta: there will be better ways to find users with shared interests, there will be some form of private messaging, and there may even be some decent blogging software.

In the way that pages tend to be large, gaudy and chaotic, and that the main form of communication is via the guest book, Mash resembles MySpace. In the way that it encourages modules by third parties to offer new functionality on top of your social network, it resembles Facebook. The only novel thing I found in Mash was the ability to allow others to modify your profile, and I immediately switched that off. It is hard to see how Mash improves on these already popular sites, and I find it unlikely that people will switch. I guess the main aim is to stop people who spend a lot of time on Yahoo from signing up to those sites. Hardly a great ambition.

What will happen to Yahoo 360?

I am not sure what the stated policy of Yahoo is with regards to 360 and Mash. However, I can see what happened to Yahoo Photos once Flickr came along. I imagine a similar fate awaits 360: a year or two of resource-starved existence, followed by forced migration.

To some extent, termination of 360 would seem to be merited. Several things are poorly implemented. Often the servers are overburdened. I have an eternal outstanding invitation that I can never delete because Yahoo deleted the account it was sent to. Notifications of guest book entries sometimes get sent out weeks after the entry was added, or not at all, or the notification comes and there is no entry. I am never sure which is the case. Sometimes I try to send a 360 message and I am told it cannot be sent because the mailbox is full. Sometimes the message is just not sent and I am given no warning at all.

There are also several design flaws in 360. If Yahoo has to limit mailbox size it should make the messages automatically expire or replace the concept with normal email. Often interesting discussions take place in guest books and blog comments. Yahoo 360 should offer facilities, as Flickr does, to see keep track of the comments immediately following your own in someone else's blog or guest book.

On the other hand, it would be a shame if 360 were terminated. Both the programming and design bugs could easily be fixed by any half-way competent programmer. Moreover, as it stands, Mash and 360 fulfil overlapping, yet distinct roles. Mash would appear to be aimed, like Facebook, more at making the most out of an existing network of friends. In 360 it is far easier to strike up new friendships. The profile and blog give a good idea of what a person is like. You can leave simple smilies and one liner comments, until you see you really have something in common with the person, and then take it further with private messages and chats via the messenger account that is invariably associated with the 360 profile. So far, Mash profiles are not so informative, you have to look elsewhere for decent blog software, and gradation in communication styles is not possible.

Where else to go?

Thinking about the pros and cons of Mash caused this wolf to ask himself which is the best social networking site, inside and outside of Yahoo. None seems perfect. Myspace is too gaudy. Facebook is too serious. Orkut is over represented by Brazilians and Indians, which the wolf finds fun but he would prefer a more even spread. So where can you find the social network with the greatest geographical spread of users, where it is easiest to strike up new friendships and where you can find stimulating blogs. And where would blog readers go if they were exiled from 360?

The Fair Lady: I think the official word from Yahoo is that some unspecified "integration" is planned between Proflies, 360 and Mash. I think they are unlikely to kill off 360 tomorrow.

Anadi: Wordpress and Blogger are good for blogging but they lack the social networking side. I would guess that most authors there are also members of MySpace etc.

I agree with the fact that 360 will gradually be phased out… it’s inevitable that it will run the same course as Yahoo Photos, which in itself has caused problems. Flickr will only allow you to store 200, which isn’t a huge problem for me, but other users who made the transfer from Yahoo to Flickr found that they in fact had to pay a fee. This was never mentioned in the run-up.
I’ll keep my Mash account. Hopefully the problems I found will be fixed, and unless I find a better alternative, that will be the direction I’ll take when Yahoo 360 finally bites the dust.
If anyone finds a better alternative, please let me know. Cheers.

My Space. I had loads of requests to be my friend that I couldn't stop coming in. I consider that site a kindergarden. If mash is going to work like the photo flicker programme the just introduced, they can keep it. I know 360 has many problems, but I can't imagine another programme that gives us so many choices. I HATE MY SPACE! and anything that looks or works like it!!!!

I came here due to Sheila's 360 mail to her 360 friends. I agree with many others who have commented that Mash looks like a MySpace page (actually, it reminds me of those browser company mainpages, like Yahoo, iWon.com, and so on---just a hodge-podge thrown onto a page someplace). If my 360 friends chose not to accept Mash, and they either quit blogging (unlikely) or go elsewhere, then I'll lose my friends (because we all know how this "stay in touch by e-mail" works, NOT!). What a shame Yahoo! is doing this to us. The almighty dollar reigns again!

Brilliant article (It seems innapropriate to call such a finely written and researched piece of work a "blog").

Essentially Yahoo simply think of us as numbers and not thinking, feeling, individuals. Their unilateral decisions, seemingly without the slightest bit of consultancy with their customers, shows this.

You have to be some sort of a rocket-scientist to finally get in touch with them, indeed I have a friend who has a degree in astro-physics who found it hard.

User-friendlyness and real customer service is almost non-existent nowadays and Yahoo especialy can be considered bloody rude.

It is a shame that simething with such fabulous potential should be run by people who are too busy patting themselves on the back to look around and see the constant through of disappointed users.

I wonder how many friendships and love-lives have been ruined by mis-understandings caused by the crappy Yahoo mail system!

Yahoo may even hae blood upon it's hands.

Just because a service is free doesn't mean that it should be costantly poor. 360 is a great concept that needs few changes. But the consistently poor quality of programming is an insult to all users.

Essentially Yahoo is all about boosting the egos of it's executive. It is not about us.

The Other Six Billion

Today this wolf discovered three interesting projects that use the web to hold a mirror up to mankind. The first by a French photographer, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, who published The Earth from the Air, the coffee table book to end all coffee table books. His latest project is Six Billion Others, a beautifully presented sample of interviews from people all over the world giving their simple yet fascinating views on the things that are important to every inhabitant on the planet, including such topics as their parents, their children's dreams, what nature means to them. The project is due to finish in 2008, so I guess there are still a few more interviews to come. What there is already there is already impressive enough.

The second project is an installation in St Louis by the German artist Julius Popp that captures words constantly from the internet and displays them ephemerally as a waterfall. A nice bit of German engineering. The artist explains the ideas behind this work in an interview on YouTube.

The last project is We Feel Fine by the American Jonathan Harris. He found another way to present the six billion humans to themselves; he analysed thousands of blogs containing the phrase “I feel ...” or “I am feeling”. He looked at the type of sentiments expressed, the age and gender of the blogger and the weather where they were located at that time. The findings are presented as an interactive program and as a series of pictures from viewers of the web site. The artist goes into the details of the project in a lecture on the TED site.

The wolf wonders if any of his blog readers have discovered other similarly interesting projects, or perhaps they can help the artist Jonathan Harris who wonders what would happen if we threw away the ancient constellations and divided up the night sky giving the stars names with meanings for us 21^st century inhabitants of planet earth.

Equally exiting is another installation of his which might interest you. It’s called The Micro.Spheres. The installation takes place in a room containing around 16 autonomously acting balls, which visitors are allowed to enter, experience and interact with. Left to their own devices in the absence of any visitors, the balls will spread out across the room in an even geometric pattern. As soon as a person enters this arrangement, the balls’ alignment, and correspondingly their immediate environment is disrupted. This forces the balls into a process of realignment incorporating the visitor into their order. The system remains active as long as the visitor continues to move. When the visitor remains still the system is able to find a new stable pattern. When there is more than one visitor within the system, the complexity of the shapes and processes increases. Who says conceptual art is boring!!??

What better way to spend European tax payers' money than on Youtube clips of fun, inoffensive sex scenes? It enhances the citizens' quality of life and makes them appreciate their culture. I am not sure that all 27 member states are equally represented here. I think some countries will have to do their homework and produce a truly pan-European version

Lest anyone think from my last blog entry that the wolf is anti-Polish, let me assure you, nothing is further from the truth. It is the birthplace of one of the wolf's favourite novelists, Joseph Conrad, and many of the world's greatest mathematicians.

Moreover, last week through the wonders of last.fm, the wolf discovered Skalpel, two DJ musicians from Wroclaw. Their music is based on sampling, typically from Polish jazz of the 60's and 70's. The wolf finds it very pleasant. If you like your music mellow, atmospheric and jazzy, maybe you will, too.

Falls einer nach dem letzten Blogentrag denkt, dass der Wolf etwas gegen Polen hat, kann ich nur sagen, dass so ein Eindruck weit gefehlt ist. Da ist der Geburtsort von Joseph Conrad, einem der Lieblingsautoren des Wolfs, und von vielen der besten Mathematiker der Welt.

Noch dazu har der Wolf letzte Woche durch last.fm die Gruppe Skalpel entdeckt. Die sind zwei DJs aus Wroclaw, deren Musik hauptsächlich aus Samples von polnischem Jazz der sechziger und siebziger Jahren besteht. Der Wolf findet diese Musik sehr angenehm. Wenn du sanfte, atmosphärische, jazzartige Musik auch magst, findest du sie vielleicht ebenso angenehm.

The Polish government has obviously done civilisation a great favour by alerting us to the dangers of the Teletubbies. Presenting children at such a tender and impressionable age to images that are not totally conformant to sexual stereotypes could have horrendous consequences. Homosexuality cannot be ruled out!

I now fear for a generation of young boys whose parents did not have the wisdom of the Polish government. Can any blog readers suggest an antidote to correct bad viewing habits of earlier years? Perhaps being subjected to endless reruns of John Wayne films? I guess young girls should be made to leave the room lest they become butch lesbians.

Die Polnische Regierung tut Zivilisation offensichtlich einen großen Gefallen, indem sie uns vor die Gefahren von den Teletubbies warnt. Kindern in so einem jungen Alter Vorbilder, die nicht völlig den üblichen Stereotypen entsprechen, zu geben, kann nur horrende Folgen haben. Homosexualität ist nicht auszuschließen!

Ich mache mich jetzt Sorgen um die Jungs, deren Eltern nicht so klug wie die polnisache Regierung waren. Vielleicht können meine Blog-Leser ein Gegenmittel für solche beschädigte Jungs vorschlagen? Look, we live in a society where we are thought of as idiots. I can't go on an escalator now, without being warned at least eight times I am coming to the point I need to alight. Hey! I went through university to learn how to get off of moving stairs, and I do it with such grace that no one can fail to be impressed.

As for young children being exposed to teletubbies, never mind the dangers of homosexuallity; instead, think about what mindless drivel it is to show a child in the first place. I remember my nephew who is four, seeing one programme, when I switched it on by mistake. Looking very puzzled, he said, "but Cassandra, what on earth are they talking about"? He understands Pingu though;)!

Homosexuallity is normal, treat it as such and then there will not be a problem. I don't want it shoved in front of my face every five minutes, I know it's part of society and always has been. Thankfully there is no stigma to it now, or at least shouldn't be.
Leave young children to be young children. I wish people wouldn't keep trying to mend what doesn't need mending!!!

The existing music firms show no sign that they know how to market music in online digital form or manage music careers outside of the obsolete star-making machinery. But before they pack their bags these men are determined to cause a lot of harm. They have expensively lobbied politicians to pass laws so that they can declare legal warfare on their own customers and currently they are in the process of killing off Internet radio.

The Internet is the perfect place for small broadcasters. Anyone can put together a playlist of tunes they find interesting and streaming this music to computers around the world is becoming cheaper all the time. Having hundreds of thousands of people broadcasting the music they love will cause more people to find their own personal musical niche and ensure that many more creators of music will find an audience. But before this happy future can play out the dinosaurs of the old 20^th century music business will have to be dead and buried. The laws in this area that the dinosaurs' lobbying efforts and campaign fund contributions have bought them are obviously designed to make life financially impossible for almost all Internet radio broadcasters that are not associated with the existing terrestrial stations. The existing radio stations, one can only assume, are more easily influenced to play the music that the big firms want to bounce onto the market. Dass Hunderte von Tausenden von Leuten auf dieser Weise Musik verbreiten, würde bestimmt dazu führen, dass jeder Mensch leichter seine Lieblingsmusik findet und noch mehr Musiker ein Publikum finden würden. Bevor wir aber diese schöne Zukunft erleben dürfen, müssen die alten Dinosaurier des 20. Jahrhundert ganz aussterben. Die Gesetze, die die Dinosaurier neulich durch intensives Lobbying gekauft haben, dienen hauptsächlich dazu, dass die Sender im Internet, die nicht mit einem schon existierenden terrestrischen Sender verbunden sind, nicht überleben werden. Die alten terrestrischen Sender sind wohl leichter zu lenken und die Dinosaurier können ihre Musikstücken wie gewohnt in den Markt einschleusen. Solche Musikstücke entsprechen aber nicht unbedingt dem Geschmack des Wolfs.

So viel ist klar: die musikalischen Edelsteine wie das Radio von David Byrne werden bald gekillt. Was halten meine Blogleser für eine passende Behandlung der vier Männer oben, die für so eine Schandtat verantwortlich sind?

Man sollte sie nach Guantánamo schicken, um als Versuchskaninchen für neue Verhörsmethoden von Präsident Bush zu dienen.
Man sollte sie zwingen, ihr Leben lang MTV zuzuhören.
Man sollte auf sie die Rolle von einem Chef einer Firma, die keine Zukunft hat, zwingen, damit sie sich selbst lächerlich machen, indem sie ihre ganze Kundschaft durch plumpe Drohungen wegjagen.
