For every year, there is a pre-approved list of tropical storm and hurricane names. These lists have been generated by the National Hurricane Center since 1953. At first, the lists consisted of only female names; however, since 1979, the lists alternate between male and female.
Hurricanes are named alphabetically from the list in chronological order. Thus the first tropical storm or hurricane of the year has a name that begins with "A" and the second is given the name that begins with "B." The lists contain hurricane names that begin from A to W, but exclude names that begin with a "Q" or "U."
There are six lists that continue to rotate. The lists only change when there is a hurricane that is so devastating, the name is retired and another hurricane name replaces it. Thus, the 2010 hurricane name list is the same as the 2004 hurricane name list although four hurricane names were retired after the devastating 2004 hurricane season so on the 2010 list Charley was replaced by Colin, Frances was replaced by Fiona, Ivan was replaced by Igor, and Jeanne was replaced by Julia.
One SCAREY night indeed! .We were 9 days without power (most importantly air conditioning) UGH! The roof needs fixing as well as walls from water coming in (and we were boarded up!), my beautiful hardwood floors buckled in a couple places, the ceiling in our bedroom (about 4 ft wide crack/hole) needs to be replaced and 2 broken windows. The water in the marina came up to a foot from the bottom of our Townhomes (we are 16 feet up on piers). Davis Rd was under water as well as some garages at the Wharf had 4 feet of water in them…..unfortunately some of our neighbors did lose their vehicles. Four chimneys blown off the roofs. Many trees split in half and damaged nearby buildings. The condos next door have been condemned and it is not known if they will rebuild or tear it down. Our parking lot was littered with dead fish, logs, barrels from 2 miles away and huge tree limbs, debris and water completely covering the concrete. It looked like a bomb had gone off. It’s amazing to look at it now just 2 weeks later, most of the debris has been piled up on the side of the street and waiting for disposal.

We ventured out in the boat and the damage we saw was horrendous.
View photos HERE The Kemah boardwalk has been basically reduced to sticks, 3 Amigo's has lost their docks as well as Outriggers (our favorite local boating eatery). 60 foot yachts on top of each other, half sunk and up in residents front yards. Some look as though they are meant to be parked there. We could see one sailboat sunk in the channel with only the top of the mast visible.

CNN iReport Featured

<img style="cursor: pointer; The weather is nice. First off this morning we are going to the Home Goods store looking for fun stuff for the house. Then back and taking the boat to Redfish Island. We had one week of winter so far this season. Last night we took Daggie out to the Kemah Boardwalk in the boat. He is really getting used to the wakes and when he sees them coming he jumps down onto the deck and hangs on for dear life LOL!! He looks great in his doggie life vest! Steph, Daggie wants to meet Gus so come on out and visit! Seeeeee Ya!

Seabrook's Pelican Path Project

Seabrook Texas

These are kinda cool.......The pelicans appear throughout the communities in Southeast Texas to promote tourism and community pride. Some of those reasons many of us do not understand. We love our brave men and women who risk their lives for our freedom everyday.
No...Freedom is not free! And, to all of the families who have lost loved ones in the war -that includes all wars, past and present- how difficult it must be to even begin to forgive the foes who have killed their sons or daughters. Some may think one has to be a saint to be capable of such forgiveness. I think so. But sainthood is open to all of us and being able to forgive comes from prayer. Having the strength to forgive comes from God. Having the power to forgive is a showering of God's grace upon our hearts, and although time may feel like an enemy in the forgiving process... I think that God's love and patience is eternal, and He will help our grief. May peace replace the grief you may feel in your heart.
The faded yellow ribbon tied tight around the tree.A tree so large and lovely, 200 years old is she.Who thought she would be holding a faded ribbon tight?Of someone's son or daughter, remembered day and night. We see this yellow ribbon and pray that all goes well. Its not my son or daughter, but I feel they are and tell.I tell my friends and family to keep them in their prayers. For God to hold them closely and wash away their fears.
We thank our men and women. While these faded ribbons wave.We never will forget. The sacrifice they gave.
Poem by Lorraine Jara, 2006

Jamaican Artist

Jamaican Inspiration
Artist Judy Ann MacMillan captures the island on canvas. Here’s a sampling of her work.
(Photo: Courtesy Judy Ann MacMillan) Text by Annie S. Butterworth An avid painter since the age of 4, artist (and new member of the Caribbean Hall of Fame) Judy Ann MacMillan is an expert at capturing every aspect of coastal culture, from the free-spirited people of Kingston to the relaxing blue-green waves of the Caribbean Sea.
Judy Ann’s fascination with Jamaica reflects her emotional connection to the island. She finds childhood memories in the faces of the people and in the natural beauty of the place. “Painting has become the way I express and live my life,” she says. “I never know whether painting filled my life because it was empty, or if I emptied my life in order for painting to fill it.”

Start today January 10, 2008

1st time blogger on the loose!
