Cosplay: Faye Valentine

DC had sent me an email about the Live Action Cowboy Bebop movie. We all know that it is kind of DOA (would of been cool though), but it got me thinking. I am doing cosplays about old school anime and this fits great.

With that said, lets take a look at the infamous Faye Valentine. Sexy and Dangerous is just two very simple words that describe her. After a quick buck and hell to anyone in her way, even Spike.

Not sure how the hell she stayed warm in that outfit, but I don't think we were caring. We just loved seeing her in action.

As always, lets get to the lovely ladies (and man) of cosplay that did her proud.

Quick Look: Aquarion EVOL

Wanted to give you a Quick Look at a new anime this season ~ Aquarion EVOL.

I really enjoyed the first Aquarion and have the anime in my collection to prove it. I just wish I had the cash for the Bandai DX Chogokin Genesis of Aquarion that transforms as well. Saw this jumped several hundred dollars sine the last time I looked.

No sense in repeating an existing plot summary. With that said, here is the one I pulled from Wikipedia:

12.000 years after the events of the original series, mankind is threatened by a new enemy from other dimension labeled "Abductors", who just like the Shadow Angels, invade the human cities to kidnap its inhabitants. To counter the invasion, the DEAVA organization establish two teams, one composed of only males and other by just females each one piloting its own giant machines called "Aquaria". To protect his new friend Mikono, teenager Amata Sora unlocks the powers he kept at bay his entire life and by combining males and females into one single robot, the legendary giant Aquarion is reborn once more.

Cool:

Mecha - Mecha and more Mecha. Just how I want it to be be. They kept the vehicle designs similar as well as Aquarion changing. The final product however, is a bit different. You have the people grabbing 'Abductors' which remind you of something from 'War of the Worlds', but not bad.

I feel the best scene so far is the one where Amata created Aquarion by breaking the 'Chastity Belts' that the vehicles have installed. He breaks them to the astonishment of the others - so funny - 'he said the word (Aquarion) that cannot be said and formed a 'perfect' union - oh the calamity.

Nothing says fun like sexual tension in an anime. Due to the schools setup and how the kids are, this will be full of some interesting events to come. I loved the corny lines that we used when they first joined. I felt so 'dirty' watching it - LOL

Wacked:

12,000 years into the future and this city looks like any European countries city. Even the film canisters haven't advanced - film in cans - come on. Their City defenses are turret cannons as well. OMFG - did all the technological part of society disappear. Oh, wait, the school is heavily technological.

Speaking of that school for the 'Elementals', do the boys and girls have to be separated this far into the future. Kind of old world thinking and silly if you ask me. They even have a freaking HUGE wall to separate the boys from the girls at the school. Even when they battle in the Aquaria, the 'Unions' are only by sex as well. Are we so damn hung up on keeping people apart by sexes to make a more perfect school and learning environment?

One other thing, what is that rabbit-head looking animal that lives in Minoko's hair? Oh, what, it is a cat - A FREAKING CAT!!!!! She also named it 'Shush' too. No technological advancement in society, but mutated pets are fine.

Overall Rating: B - why separate the kids by gender???

I will watch this as I really do like the mecha and it looks to be fun. The kids crossing over into a mixed machine in itself a wild ride. We all know how it should end, so lets see if the premonition is true or just a possible future.

Cosplay Interview: AmericanNia

Who says nothing cool comes out of Sunny Philadephia? Not us as we have a great cosplayer that comes from just that place. I had the pleasure of being contacted by Brenda who wanted to know I would feature her. Well, we never say no to the lovely ladies of cosplay - who could?

She happened to have come across our Cosplay Friday of Anti-Spiral Nia and also happened to cosplayed her as well (not sure how I missed her). We exchanged emails and she was kind enough to do an interview with us. She may be just starting out, but has some wonderful cosplays already done.

Well, enough of my banter as I am sure you would rather get on the interview.

What is your name, where do you reside and what is your age?

My name is Brenda; the two usernames I use most often are Japanimeclarinetist and AmericanNia.

I came up Japanimeclarinetist because I love Japan, anime and play the clarinet. I also came up with AmericanNia because I am a proud American and my favorite character is Nia.

The letters “NIA” also happen to be the last three letters of the two states I have lived in. I currently live in Pennsylvania in a Philadelphia suburb and I'm 19 years old.

What first started you on the road to cosplay?

Well, I think going to my first anime convention and seeing Bleach started me on the road to cosplay.

The first convention I ever went to was a really tiny one at the college I now attend and when I saw Soi Fon in Bleach I knew I wanted to dress up as her. Unfortunately though that costume still remains unfinished but I did finish my Diva costume for my cosplay sweet 16. I loved Diva from Blood+ and after dressing up as her I couldn't get enough of it. That's when I started to go to more conventions and make more costumes and after I was Nia at Katsucon last year I became hooked.

What characters have you cosplayed and why?

I've cosplayed:

-Diva from Blood+. I love her as a character and rooted for her the entire series, especially when Saya went all emo. I really want to do more Diva cosplays and maybe some Saya ones because they have the same face and Saya has pretty dresses, and I figure since they have the same face and my face isn’t going to change why not do both?

-Orihime Inoue from Bleach. I just think she's so adorable and sweet and innocent. She's a little weird but so am I and I love her crush on Ichigo.

-Nia Teppelin from Gurren Lagann. I love Nia; she's probably my most favorite character of all time. I have a really soft spot for the sweet, innocent princess type characters. Even when she became an Anti-Spiral she broke my heart but I loved her anyway.

-Anti-Spiral Nia. Like I said, I love Nia. I hope on cosplaying every version of her someday!

-Saki Morimi from Eden of the East. My friend wanted to do a group cosplay with me and I wore it to Washington D.C. during the cherry blossom festival but his Akira wasn't finished yet. Then at Otakon I didn't wear it because it was way too hot!

-Kisara Nanjo from History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi. I love Kisara. I think I've said that about every character I've cosplayed but I do, I really do! I think Kisara is awesome, I love her motivation, her reason for fighting and that she is a cat lover. It also helps that she has green eyes because I do too. Also my brother was supposed to be Odin so we were going to do a group cosplay together.

-Maria Wong from Descendants of Darkness. I found a dress that I thought was perfect for her and put some flowers in my hair and dressed up as her. Then I decided I want to redo the dress so it's more accurate and I'll be doing a group cosplay for it at Katsucon this coming February. I’m excited because my brother will be Doctor Muraki and it will be the first time we cosplay together.

I also recently finished a Moka Akashiya cosplay that I haven't debuted and am working on Zelda from The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword.

What one character you have been dying to do, but not had the chance and why?

I have been dying to be Kallen from Code Geass, or Euphemia, Cornelia and C.C.

When I watched Code Geass I was in love with it. My brother and I were obsessed and admired the women in it! Some anime really downplay what a woman can do but in Code Geass they are strong and independent and above all else determined. They're really good role models, I mean, except that Kallen was a terrorist but the terrorists were the good guys anyway. I'd love to be all of them one day. I have so many planned cosplays; I'm set for the next few years.

I have been trying to figure this out for the Anti Spiral Nia Cosplays. How was the red lines done on the suit and the blue for the wig?

Well for my Anti Spiral Nia cosplay I asked my friend Sarah to paint the lines.

I watched every episode with her in it and took a million reference pictures. I'm not as skinny as Nia so when my friend painted on the lines she made it proportional to my body so it wouldn't look weird. You would not believe how many people think I'm from Tron!

I now have two Nia wigs so the answer for how the blue was put in is a little different for each. For my first wig I bought a wig that was blonde but already had the blue in it because it was made for Nia cosplays, but I killed that wig. Then I invested in a new Nia wig and I made it myself following WindoftheStars tutorial. You start out with a light blonde wig and cut up the blue wig and sew the first blue wefts in, and then glue some in and then sew the blue in for the bangs. I mean if you want to do it yourself it’s not that simple, you’d have to follow her tutorial but she makes it really easy. And I’m really happy with my result.

When not cosplaying, what do you do?

Normally I'd like to say hang out with my friends but really this last semester I was doing nothing but school work, working at my job, actually for a while I was working two jobs, and working on cosplays. I also spend a lot of time planning out which conventions I’m going to and what cosplays I’m making.

For any aspiring cosplayers a little shy, what words of wisdom do you have for them to get started?

I'd say don't care what anyone else thinks.

If you want to go for it then go for it! I get criticized for still liking anime and some of my relatives don't approve of the cosplaying. I also occasionally get criticized for my size but you can't listen to all that!

If you like it and are having fun and making friends then what everyone else says doesn't matter! But be warned, between getting wigs, and registering for conventions, paying for hotels and the actual costumes it is a pretty expensive hobby. Get a job before you start so you can pay for what you want to do. I try to make my cosplays so that helps keep costs down.

And I'm lucky because my mom is an awesome seamstress and is helping me get better at sewing. Also if you’re as shy as I can be you need to work on being more outgoing because that is the best way to make friends. If you like someone’s cosplay, compliment them! They’ll appreciate that you like the hard work they put into it. You never know who your next friend is going to be.

Quick Look: Gundam Double 00 the Movie

Welcome to another edition of Kids Korner

I have decided to let my son help with doing another review. It is interesting seeing it from a child's perspective. Besides, it helps him with writing in school which is always a good thing. This time we will be reviewing: Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer

What did you like about the movie?

Raven: How well the alien entities transform into a Gundam.I also liked the illustration of the Gundams.

Dad: What is not to like as it is a Gundam Movie :)

What didn't you like about the movie?

R: When the entities came together and made a flower. I thought that was unusual.

D: I agree with my son on this. This was a bit of an odd ending for a Gundam movie, but I got the reference - still not how I expected it to end.

What part of the movie was your favorite?

R: The war zone, because I like a lot of action.

D: I likes the battle scenes as well, but sometimes the action moved so fast you couldn't catch it.

Who was your favorite Gundam and why?

R: I didn't have one as I liked them all.

D: I have to say my favorite was the GN-006 Cherudim - love the shields and guns on this baby.

Would you recommend this to your friends and why?

R: No, even for me it was a little scary for me.

D: I would toss a coin on this as I think I would recommend Gundam Wing before this.

Overall Rating:

R: A, because it is Gundam and anime, a perfect mix

D: C, just because of the screwed up ending.

Keep or Throw: Keep (we both agree on this)

We both had fun with this and hope to do it again soon.

Cosplay: Bubblegum Crisis

Going Mecha this time for the Old School. We are featuring nothing less than Bubblegum Crisis.

We will be featuring the Night Sabres in their Mecha outfits. Hell, the picture to the left is actually the side views of the old VHS tape series.

Now there was 2 versions of this created, so you may see both versions here. You will have the original series from 1987 and the revamped Tokyo 2040 series from 1998. I tried to find one of each of the ladies, but it seems Priss and Nene held the favorite spots.

Either way, you will get to see lovely ladies in cosplay, so lets get started.

DC Rushton’s Toy and Figures Review #3

“MY NUMBER ONE CHRISTMAS PRESENT!”

This year’s Christmas for sure was DOOMED to be a “Slim One”. But with family, friends, and “Good Cheer”, made it a meaningful one. And that is what counts. Presents were unexpected. You would think my son Jon finding a black leather couch/love seat by a dumpster that match my recliner be the best. Completes my living room. NO! An e-mail came from the East. MY LORD AND WEB-MASTER DAN. (or is that “OUR’S) It for told of a package coming to his most “Humble Servant” , and Co-Writer. (it’s a LONG RUNNING joke between us) This was that Christmas’s, “UNEXPECTED” present that, “MADE MY CHRISTMAS“!

From “Revoltech” of the YAMAGUCHI Series, the “GENO BREAKER“. IN MY TWO FAVORITE COLOR COMBO! RED AND BLACK! I named her while still in her box, “The Red MECH Dragon”. (NO, NOT “RED NECK” DRAGON”)

She is the HOME LAND JAPANESE issue. 99% of the instructions and illustration are in “PURE NIPPON”. Only 1% English. So you MUST be mechanical mind for this “BABY”. There are “97” parts to her with Special Plastic Pliers tool included for the connectors. She a “ARF”. “All-Most Ready-To Fly”. (Old Radio Control Airplane term) Removing her from the box I only had to attach a leg to hip joint, and “Cutter Claws” in place.

Also inside I found a plastic bag with the usual “Catalog”, Spare Connectors, Tool, Flyers, and 2 “Tokens”, with a box for them. 10, and 20 value. I have no idea what you save them for. Perchance save them up and trade them in to buy a “Special” Revoltech. If anyone out there knows, please drop us a note. I AM NEW TO THIS! Assembled, I for saw the “Stander Set Up” problems with this Figures. No problem for this experienced Figure Hobbyist.

From the Dumpster came a nice little black prefinished rectangle of wood, 5 ½ X 9 ½ inch. (must have been a DVD shelf) This is why I save wood scraps and such. This became the “Display Base”. When dealing with these “Articulated Figures”, start with the feet and legs FIRST. A solid proper position attached to your Display Base will give you a work base. THIS IS A MUST. So PRE-PLAN! I would of epoxy her feet to base. Damn I was all out. So… I attached her with small screws. I will fill the cross tip heads with epoxy and paint silver to match. E-Z!

IT’S MAN “PLAY TIME”! Position your DRAGON any way you wish for today’s display. One could spend hours changing it, deploying weapons, and the like. I DISPLAY HER RIGHT UNDER THE CENTER OF MY CHRISTMAS TREE! For she was my Number One Present this year of 2011. The MEN during Christmas Day would set in my back bed room around my work bench to do MANLY things they do at Christmas. Center on my work bench was my Red Mech Dragon. And center of conversation she was! (and MAN play).

Cosplay Interview: Vickybunnyangel

We have the distinct pleasure of having Vickybunnyangel for our Cosplay Interview. I have to say that I am amazed by the number of gifted cosplayers from this region of the world (Canada).

She has done some really extravagant photo shoots that really show you her fashion side. I am seeing this more frequently where cosplayers are crossing over to fashion.

You also have to check out her on YouTube. It really showcases what these cosplayers do to get these designs created for our enjoyment. Speaking of costumes, I am excited to let you know that some photos here are being shown for the first time. Yep, you will see some stunning cosplay photos that have never been posted anywhere else ~ WORLD EXCLUSIVE ~ :D

Lets have me stop talking so you can get onto the interview - so excited:

What is your name and where do you reside?

I go by Vickybunnyangel and my full name is Victoria. I’m proud to be Canadian! I currently reside in Toronto and lovin’ it.

What first started you on the road to cosplay?

I was under the impression you had to cosplay if you went to anime conventions, so when the high school anime club president invited me to Anime North, I jumped right into it! Of course when I got to the convention scene I realized a good majority of people didn’t cosplay. Yeah, I admit to being gullible and naïve at the time, but I have no regrets. Cosplay is awesome!

How do you choose which characters you will Cosplay?

I first started out picking characters I really liked, or characters who had similar personalities to me, but nowadays I’m attracted to design over character. I don’t have a lot of time to watch anime/read manga/play games, so when I come across an image for a design I really like, I’ll research it further. It’s kind of like doing things in reverse. If I see a character from a game I like, then I’ll go play the game to figure out if I will like the character and gain better insight into their personality.

Even if I don’t like the personality of a character, I’ve moved beyond doing personalities that are comfortable to me. Cosplay allows me to be someone else, and I’m seeking to diversify my acting/modeling ability. It’s fun to be “that annoying person” or “that over-the-top enthusiastic person”, because it’s so unlike me.

The only characters I typically stay away from are super moe children. There’s no way I can pull off a child, so I don’t even bother.

You are very dramatic in how you pose for the camera. Did you have any formal training or was this just natural for you ?

Why thank you! ^_^

I haven’t had any training, but I wouldn’t say I’m born with that talent either. I used to be addicted to America’s Next Top Model, and Tyra gives a lot of modeling advice in every episode. If you can get past the catty drama, there is a lot of good tips to learn from that show! I was an Art History Major in university, and took a few courses in Classical Art. Studying the way master artists depicted the human body certainly helped me understand the theories behind aesthetics.

This sounds very narcissistic but I spend a lot of time in front of the mirror too. I study my own body and practice poses to see what works at what angle, and what just looks dumb. Anime characters can pull off a lot of poses that can be painful if you’re not a contortionist. I’ve been put in a lot of pain before after posing a certain way for a character, but if it delivers a kickass photo, then the momentary discomfort was worth it.

What conventions or shows have you cosplayed at and have you gotten any awards?

I’ve mainly cosplayed at Anime North, Fan Expo, Otakuthon and smaller local cosplay events in Toronto. In 2011, I ventured south of the border and started going to American conventions which included: Katsucon, Otakon, and Youmacon.

I’ve won several major awards at masquerades with the most recent win being Best in Show Workmanship for Yuko Ichihara at Youmacon 2011.

Has there been a favorite Cosplay over the years that you enjoyed doing and why?

Astharoshe Asran is so far still my favourite because of how challenging it was.

It was the first time I really wanted to go for something ambitious to test my own abilities. I didn’t follow any tutorials, and just solved the costume on my own. There was only one reference image for that dress, which allowed me to get creative with the way the rest of it looked.

I can’t believe how much attention that cosplay got, and how it continues to inspire so many people to do that character now. I see a lot of people using what I did as a reference, but that’s ok. It was a challenge that I had overcome and at the end of the day that is what satisfies me.

When not cosplaying, what do you do?

I work full-time in marketing and that pretty much takes up most of my time.

After work I play video games or watch anime with the boyfriend. My other pet hobby is cooking for bento boxes. On days where I don’t feel like sewing, I’ll try out a new recipe to make something yummy and cute for lunch.

For any aspiring cosplayers a little shy, what words of wisdom do you have for them to get started?

Stop asking “how” and just “do”.

Cosplay is often trial and error. In this age there are so many tutorials out there that didn’t exist when I first started, so my best advice would be to Google if you’re really looking for advice on how to make something.

Failing Google, just jump in and experiment. You will learn a lot by doing things yourself, and who knows? You might discover the next innovative technique to share with the cosplay community. If you’re not good at sewing, don’t let that be a barrier. Go with cosplays that can be put together from normal clothing, and learn to modify them a bit to be more accurate. You can also buy a lot of costumes online now, so anyone can participate and enjoy this hobby.

Shonen Jump goes Digital

To my son's disappointment, Shonen Jump is now going to be digital. His subscription ends n May and I am not sure I am going to continue it. It is now called Shonen Jump Alpha.

I can understand the business part of this as it would be cheaper to go digital than to print & ship these mags each month.

The last 'printed' edition is going to be the one in March (April Edition). I am a little upset as we didn't get the January or February editions. I purchase the February one at Barnes & Noble this past week for him. I have contacted Shonen Jump for the other issue he missed.

My son does have a computer, but I really can't open an account for him as he needs an email address. Now we have made one for him, but I am not ready to turn email access over to a 10 year old. He has loved getting this in the mail, but sometimes I think it is more for the Yu-Gi-Oh! cards than the Manga.

I will probably not renew the subscription unless maybe I get it for him. Without an electronic device, it is a little hard to read these in the bathroom like he does :D

Keeping it old school this month and reaching back into the vaults. We have this week up for your enjoyment Queen Emeraldas.Never was into the Space Operas too much, but she was a beauty in her day. She made appearances in both Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 in the late 70's.

I always thought it odd that both her and Harlock had scars on their faces on the same side. It is great that even old anime like this gets the attention of the cosplayers. I really enjoy seeing the stuff I used to watch being cosplayed today.

Cosplay Interview: Sweet Angel

Welcome to another addition of Cosplay Interview. Today we will being traveling to Europe to met up with the lovely Sweet Angel.

She has done some amazing cosplays in recent years and her photographers have really brought out the characters she portrays. What really impressed me was a series of shots of her as Yoko that were done by Lucas Tonet.

I was blown away by the artistic points of view and how stylish Sweet Angel posed for them. As you will see below, she can really bring your favorite characters to life.

Well, I guess it is time to open the interview up and hear from Sweet Angel herself:

What is your name, where do you reside and what is your age?

My name is Gloria, but I'm known on web as Sweet Angel. I'm 21 years old and I'm Italian.

What first started you on the road to cosplay?

When I was a child I wanted so much to wear a Sailor Moon costume for Carnival, but my mother never bought me one, so I just worn a very simple, black witch costume.

When I was a teenager it happened that sometimes I found images of people who was wearing costumes of my favourite characters, I admired them but to me it was just a a dream to do the same.

By chance, in 2008 I found out that in my city there was a cosplay contest, so I went to see it. After 1-2 months I prepared my first cosplay, Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII.

How do you choose which characters you will Cosplay?

First of all I must like them esthetically and the character must be pretty similar to me. If they don't I don't even start to make it, even if I like them very much!

Second, I must like their temper, it must have a strong and decisive personality and even a giant weapon xD

I don't take into consideration to make cosplay of defenseless princesses, crybabies and so on because I don't really like them :/

Sometimes my boyfriend asks me to make a cosplay of a character he likes, and if following the anime series or playing the videogame I found out that I like it too, the cosplay will be done (examples:
Kirin Armor and Kaguya)

I am a HUGE Yoko fan and your photos were stunning that you did of her. How was it working on that photo shoot and with the photographer?

Yoko is too my favourite character since the first moment I saw her! It took two years to find a perfect location for her and in 2011 I finally found it (in some caves very near my house!).

The photographer, Luca Tonet, already took some pictures in his studio and conventions. We decided to cooperate, since as we got along very well, for this set. He's a perfectionist and among the 200 pictures made, we choose only about ten of them. I also brought another version of Yoko from the 6th episode of the anime, the one who take place in a sauna and I thin is one of the funniest of the entire series!

Another version that I made was a "model" version, inspired from the video "Pieces of sweet stars" and the artbook. The last two photo shoots were taken by my sister's boyfriend, he's a pro photographer.

I am always interested in cosplay from other parts of the world. Since you are from Italy, what are they conventions that you go to in your area? Is there a large turnout of cosplayers?

We have many different fairs in Italy, beginning with small conventions with few participants to the very big one like Lucca Comics and Games that involves the whole city.

Another very important fair, which I didn't take part, is Romics (in Rome). In this occasion the Italian representatives for the WCS (World Cosplay Summit) are selected.

Together with good friends of mine, I also organize 3 cosplay's contests in my area: Cosplay in TV, Montegames and Naoniscon. I invest a lot of time organizing them but I get a lot of satisfaction when I receive congrats from people.

The spectators number is always growing because the "cosplay phenomenon" is increasing, and sometimes it seems a trend!

Speaking of conventions, I saw that you were on the cover art for the cosplay flyer for Nipponbashi this year. What was the process for this and how did you feel when you were picked?

"Nipponbashi d'autunno" is a fair that develops in my hometown, Treviso.

I'm one of the cosplay organization staff, and the guys that arrange the entire fair decided to use one of my Yoko pictures to publicize the event, online and by flyers.

I'm really happy to be appeared in that advertising for that event, and I hope it helped the event.

I see that you have a sponsor which must be great. I know that other cosplayers would like to be sponsored. How did that come about with you getting sponsored by Miccostumes?

I had a contract by email from a Miccostumes' representative. Together we decided which cosplay I would wear, along with a wig (always gifted by them) in change of advertising and pictures for their site.

I'm enthusiastic about having this opportunity! I hope I will get more sponsors, for cosplay but also for fashion clothes and accessories!

When not cosplaying, what do you do?

I'm a third year student of byotechnology at the University of Padova. I hope I will graduate between July-September of 2012 and then specialize in medical byotech.

Furthermore, as any other girl, I LOVE shopping! I'm also interested in nail art (I have around 40 nail polishes) and I experiment with new decorations.

For any aspiring cosplayers a little shy, what words of wisdom do you have for them to get started?

Cosplay is a passion. You don't have to get upset while doing it. You just have to fulfill your commitment to yourself and do your best. It doesn't matter if you don't achieve the results you want from the beginning.

I think it's better to make a few costumes once in a while. Make costumes that give you satisfaction!

While doing cosplay, you can find many new friends and with them, you can help each other with making more cosplay costumes.

Manga Review: Monster Hunter Orage

Been a while, but I think it is time for a Manga Review. I should be doing these a couple times a month and may work on that for everyone. This week we will be reviewing Monster Hunter Orage.

This is drawn by Hiro Mashima under the supervison of CAPCOM. His other works also include Rave Master and Fairy Tail. Right now I am also reading Fairy Tail which is a great read as well.

His companion is Ailee, a skilled huntress who would rather have nothing to do with the airheaded Shiki. Now the excitement of Monster Hunter games meets the creative genius of Fairy Tail's Hiro Mashima in a fun, thrill-filled fantasy adventure!

What is Cool about it:

DRAGONS and more DRAGONS. One of my son’s favorite mythical creatures and there are plenty of them here. I like the fact that they have a page in the book that describes the dragons in more detail. Kind of a ‘want to know more’ that you should read.

Our main guy, Shiki, is not only a Dragon Hunter, but a Seal Hunter. This means he can go anywhere and hunt dragons. He is not limited by the Guilds rules and can accompany other hunters. He just needs to make sure he reports any kills. His first ‘comrade is Irie and it turns out is the daughter of his master Greylee. Talk about a small world.

The back stories are well placed and a good addition to the story as a whole. They actually give you the missing parts of a character. These ‘short stories’ help to illustrate why they have their ‘little’ attitude or characteristics. This was especially true with Irie as you just can’t understand why she didn’t like being called Shiki’s comrade.

Like all Fantasy adventures, this one has a great quest. His Master was not able to do it, so Shiki took it over. This is not just any quest, but THE ULTIMATE QUEST. He is on the trail to find the legendary dragon Miogaruna.

What Suckles about it:

I hate to say this, but it is the same old plot. Young boy looses father figure and is set up on the world by himself. He is over ambitious and easily thinks everything will be fine. While on his ‘Big Adventure’ he finds friends to accompany him on the journey and battle alongside him. There is the ever so ‘evil villain’ (who’s name is Shadow – seriously, just that????). Like all plots, he is out to stop Shiki or take something from him. Even though this is an overused plot, like all these stories, it does work here.

Why the over use of the word ‘Comrades’? I makes me feel that I am in Olde Mother Russian sipping Vodka with the boys in the corner.

Where’s PLUE??? LOL

My son actually found this, so the credit should go to him.

It is a fun read and falls well in line with Hiro’s style of storytelling. Every turn of the page just adds more excitement to the story (even if familiar). A young adventurer looking for ‘comrades’ to help him on his journey seeking the greatest of Dragons. What more fun can you have than that!

Overall Rating: B – great art, even greater Dragons, but usual plot.

Cosplay: Lum from Urusei Yatsura

Keeping with the olde school anime characters, lets look at Urusei Yatsura. I have not seen this anime or read the manga myself, but know it well thanks to one character - Lum.

I have to say this is the sexiest Oni I have seen even if she is an alien. I guess this has to be one of the skimpiest cosplays (where clothes are involved) that you will be to see at many shows.

Not sure how, but it seems that Tiger Stripped swimsuits with thigh high matching boots were the rage in the early 80's.

DC RUSHTONs TOY AND FIGURES SERIES #2

KAGURA FIGURE PROJECT

Back a few years ago, at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con, I SCORED this figure. LOVE the “Little Guy” at his small booth in the crowded “Dealer’s Room”. Oh… BACK-IN-THE-DAY! (that was when guys like him could afford it!) The man all most “Carny”, (before your time) or “Carnival Barker” chanted: “3 for 10 in front, 10 to 15 on the wall!”. Out of the “Front Bins” of “3 for 10 Dollars”, I had found 2 Plush Inuyasha toys. (too long ago to remember) There in his hand, he had pull out of a raddy box “Store Worn/Beat-Up” Figures. Saw the state it was in a flash, and what/who it was. I held up my Staff with a Ten Dollar Bill wedge in it‘s Ying/Yang symbol to him.

“Yo my man! I’ve 2 for my ten, all Inuyasha. One for me Ex, one for the kid. How’s about that old boxed Kagura. All ways had a thing for her and her “SPIDER TAD”, and HOT RED EYES!” Fellow MEN around chuckled. Elbows from their LADIES were applied. This man was a true “Little Guy” that would ‘Wheel and Deal”. Looking it over he laughed. “And we ALL KNOW ABOUT WOMEN WITH TADS. Never forget your self guy. DONE!” He took the ten, and hung her on my staff! After a year of hanging on the wall in her “Beat-Up” box, I broke her out. This is what I did with her and part of the display box.

Love what one can do with a Cigar Box. Bottom and one side became her stage. Covered with scrap red “Broad Cloth”. ( House Colors of my apt. is red + black) From her box I cut her face and name. Scrap balsa wood pads were attached to each end of her stage for stability, and her “Foot Screw” space below. A flat head screw 1/16 is drilled through stage, and her foot.

BOOM!

Your “Goddess of the WIND”, is ready for display, and BLOW AWAY ALL who dare across her path, or FAIL to “SATE”, her appetites! I hope you enjoyed this posting and I VOW I’ve got MORE!

I am just happy that 2011 is over as the end of the year sucked and we need a fresh start. Though I did get a lot of new stuff at the end of the year, which did bring some hope for the new one.

We have now started a brand new year and only 354 days until the end of the World. What joy will this year bring as our existence winds down?

What, you don't know what I am talking about?

Well, you better break out your Travel Edition of the Mayan Calendar and check it out. It is all the rage this year. What has been decoded is that the Mayans calendar stopped counting the days as of 12/21/2012 which is the the Winter Solstice. Sorry, no Christmas this year.

Enough of the doom and gloom I guess.

Have you made any New Years Resolutions? I try not to as I usually give up before the end of the first month. This year though, will give it a try since it is the last one.

My New Years Resolutions:

More review posts of anime, manga and figures
Get out and take nature photos again
Loose weight and 'try' to be healthier
BE MORE POSITIVE < this one will be fucking hard for me
Get to a con and take pictures of all the wonderful cosplayers and connect with local like minded people

More than I think I can handle, but will try.

Good part is that this will be the year of the Dragon (Water). It starts on January 23, 2012 and closes out February 9, 2013. The reason for these date is that this calendar follows the cycles of the Moon. Our calendar follows the cycles of the Sun (in case you didn't know).

This is my Chinese Astrology sign, so it has to be a good year for me. I am hoping the luck of the dragon will get me a more rewarding job.

Cosplay: Mink from Dragon Half

Reaching back in time for a nostalgic cosplay character. I have to start of with a story about this anime - Dragon Half. I actually got this on DVD many years ago and my son watched it with me. Now I figured it was for a younger crowd until her top got ripped of and we saw BOOBIES!!!!

My son was only 5 years old at the time, but this was one of is favorite anime's to watch then. I know he loved dragons, so this is probably why he wanted to see it.

Mink is actually half human (Dad) and half dragon (Mom). Dad was a knight that was set to kill the Dragon, but once she was in human form, he fell in love with her - so this is where you get the title from.

Don't Diss a Gamer

I was tuned onto this at work by a couple co-workers who are avid gamers. It is an email exchange by a Gamer (Dave) who pre-ordered the N-Control Avenger Controller. It is made for the X-Box or PS3 (which I have neither of).

Why am I mentioning this - well - it has made world news - in a very, very bad way. It is a story of Ocean Marketing's PR guru Paul Christoforo with his 'not-so-nice' responses to Gamer Dave just wanting to know where their pre-order is for this cool controller. It is a customer service and PR nightmare. It is a good lesson on knowing who you are talking to and the POWER of the INTERNET.

To quote Gabe from Penny Arcade:

" Trust me when I tell you that this is one wild ride. I’m serious, Mr. Toad would look at this ride and just give a slow clap while shaking his head."

Cosplay Interview: NAMEKO

We have another wonder Cosplayer Interview this week from the Land of the Rising Sun - NAMEKO!

You have probably seen her on some of my Friday cosplay series. She does some fabulous cosplays from a wide range of characters. She is not shy either as you can see her cosplay as the Hyper Nurse, Shunya Yamashita characters and some from Queen's Blade.

She has a very long list of cosplays and crossplays that she has done. it is amazing the amount of detail and accuracy she places on her cosplays. There are some that you will do a double take on just to see all the integrate parts she has applied.

I want to let you know that I have "paraphrased" what was noted by her. She did a great job trying to reply in English and per her request, I worked to assist with the translation. As we know, not all Japanese words translate to English and vise versa.

Lets get to this interview now:

What is your name, where do you reside and what is your age?

"My name is namechiru, I am 25 years old and live in Japan."

What as the first one that started you on the road to cosplay?

"The first cosplay I did was Zell from Final Fantasy 8"

How do you choose which characters you will Cosplay?

"I enjoy modeling and choose them from a figure (ie Shunya Yamashita) or other source."

I saw that you make your own Cosplay, how long does it usually take to make one and what items do you use to make them?

"Some of the cosplays can take up to 3 months to complete. I use urethane board and cloth mainly, but also use Pekapeka stretch fabric as well."

When not cosplaying, what do you do?

"I like to cook and draw."

For any aspiring cosplayers a little shy, what words of wisdom do you have for them to get started?

"You must begin with what aspires you to cosplay. You must cosplay what is important to you and not worry about your ability in the beginning. Keep continuing as you will just get better."

Anime Cels still Sell

Not sure how many people collect Anime Cels, but I do have a few myself. I used to have several, but a fire we had 10 years ago destroyed most of them. They were mostly Transformer cels from the Beast Wars series in Japan. Still would like to get my hands on some Ghost in the Shell or Gundam cels however.

Usually they are only a little larger the a letter size sheet of paper, but you can get larger ones if they are used for panning in the anime. I have a larger one for this blog that showcases this. It is the only one that I know I have left.

As we know, this is pretty much a lost art form. You had the sketched sheet and then was handed off to the painter. You can see at the bottom right where it gets placed in the series of shots in the worksheet.

They would black line out the sketch and paint the colors in layers on the transparent sheet. Some, would have some sprayed areas to showcase explosions or lighting effects. Below is the front and back of the cel itself to give you an idea.

You also can be lucky and get a background sheet as well. These are the fully painted and sometimes highly detailed artwork that is used for the anime cels to be placed on top of for the anime.

I have only been able to pick mine up on eBay which does leave the chance of the being forged. I think that I have gotten all original cels however. I try to make sure that they have the sketch and cel both if I am purchasing them. This way I feel it is original, but who knows. I also like it when the background comes with them as well. With the background and cel, it makes it better if you choose to hang them up to show them off.

We actually celebrate Yule which is on the Winter Solstice. This year it happened to fall on December 23rd.

We did it a little different this year as we used Amazon Wishlists to get each other gifts. This way we got EXACTLY what we each wanted. My list was totally related to my passion for stuff from Japan. With the exception of some cologne, it was an Otaku Yule celebration.
