Ive changed the way I plan to manage this Messenger Music Service project so many times. Mainly due to the fact that it has to be easy to update. I've been working on so many projects that MMS has taken a back seat. Now I know how I want it and it's being built to be updated as easily as possible. Stay tuned, it will be here very soon.

Absolut Kravitz - free downloads!

Absolut Vodka has commissioned remixes from some excellent talent and now they offer the tracks for free download on the Absolut site. I like the fact that they ask very little committment from you--primarily in your region and age--and then you're free to check out the music. Notable remixers are Jazzanova, Louie Vega, Chromeo, and one of my favorite artists, Ashley Beedle. I think the best mix comes from Chinese producer Wang Lei since he strips the very poppy Lenny vocals out and lays down some funky future noise. I dig the Chromeo version too which still uses the vocal but it has some great instrumental moments that could cut up and used in my dj sets. The others are good but the song is mediocre at best. This is a cool project from Absolut and a good chance to get some free legal music, so we give it good marks. Check out the downloads HERE.

In the future release of MMS mag we'll be directing you to many places where you can get free music --and of course info where you can buy additional music from the same artists. Don't forget to support the people making (or playing) the new music you love, or else there won't be much music to choose from.

Laptop Death Match

This is a cool event in Texas where they get together and battle with laptop performances. It's not really anything new, but they are organizing and performing it in a different way. I think the key to the further progression and popularity of dj/laptop/live PA performance of electronic music is to provide a more interesting show for the patrons to check out. Another interesting thing is that the artists featured on the website only use My Space profiles. It seems that many young artists are using it as their primary web presence. It's funny because My Space can be a little dorky and it's extremely commercial with cheesy ads everywhere, but that's where the traffic is. I probably get more page views there than on my dj site, but I do use it (My Space) to point people to my site to download mixes. Synergy is the goal...

Giant Step Jukebox / Giles Peterson Worldwide

Giant Step has been one of my favorite record
labels for some time. It was the first stateside
label with major label connections to spotlight
quality soul, jazz, house, funk, Latin, African and
other styles of music--that no one would touch in
the early days. Since then they helped launch
the major-label careers of Macy Gray, Jill Scott,
Nora Jones and many others.

Now they have a feature called Giant Step Jukebox
which is a simple Flash-based player with tons of
archived content. It really drew my attention
because it features (exclusively) the only
US-based place to listen to Giles Peterson's
Worldwide radio program. Originally broadcast on
London's Radio 1, Worldwide is an essential show
to check if you want to hear quality music first.

Sure you can listen from the BBC

website, but sometimes I
have trouble with the connection at my
office so I rarely get to listen to the entire
program. Now with Giant Step's service I can
listen to it (and several others) whenever I
want.Plus a lot of the music being played can be
purchased directly from Giant Step's store.

I've been wondering how many music services would
pop up that allow you to sell digital music and
it seems that now is the time.

I think one of the shortcomings of digital music
stores is that they have not set up a system that
enables the regular, super-independent artist to
sell his or her self-produced music. Indy, digital,
electronic-music stores such as Beatport and
Traxsource require that you have an entire
catalog of music (or that you are "signed")
before they will consider you. That policy
eliminates many artists trying to make it on
their own. I'm sure they will have those services
soon but in the meantime companies such as
Musicane are getting a jumpstart on cornering the
market.

I think I'll try out this service since it seems
decent. You can use the free "Lite" program with
ads, limited uploads and a 40% cut taken by
Musicane for any music you sell. If you
subscribe, you can offer a lot more but they
still take 30 percent
30 percent isn't a lot but it remains to be
seen whether or not using this service will
actually help you. I think it's good for the
musician who doesn't know much about the digital
world and who doesn't want to fiddle with too
much technology instead of creating. But for
someone who knows how to set-up their own site
for sales, and who knows how to market it, they might
be better off on their own.

But then again it might be better to have your
digital music in as many places as possible, to
increase your chances of making some money from
your hard work.

OK back to some music. Alice Russell is one of the best vocalists you will hear period. Her new album is stunning; it features downbeat rhythms, jazz, funk and her amazing voice. It was produced by TM Juke from whom we can expect more great things in the future.

Yahoo Podcast Search

Yahoo has a podcast search to go with their music search, which might make it easier to find good content. I tried it out and found a few, but I was surprised to find very few listings. Maybe it's still new, I'm sure eventually it will be better. I'm excited about podcasting (except for the actual term "podcasting"), I just feel overwhelmed sometimes when I think about just how big it's becoming. I think search and directory services such a this and others will help to filter out the junk.

I wish I could just type in "good music" and actually get results that are pleasurable; now there's an idea, if only we could figure out how to manufacture and package truly good music.

Motorola iradio

The iRadio project seems like a good idea.
Basically you can set-up a radio broadcast and
send it out to Motorola subscribers. It's pretty
much the same thing that you can already do with
a podcast--knowing that eventually everyone will
have a phone that can pick up podcasts and
satellite radio, and all of the other garbage
that will be polluting the airways.
With iradio, they say that you can access your
mp3 collection which is transmitted to your car
stereo or home stereo through your phone, so
whatever you have on your phone can be broadcast.
I like the idea that I can do one radio program
every week, upload it to my site and broadcast it
on iradio, itunes (and all of the other podcast
directories), and host it on whichever network
will take it. Plus I can use my own marketing
methods to try and reach listeners, so it could
eventually be like hosting my own program, and it
could even be better than terrestrial radio.

Anyway, it looks like a cool service to check;

it's always fun to get involved with
something in the beginning, and in this case if
anyone can pull it off, it's a big company like
Motorola.
