US Education- New Community College Scholarship to Develop Professional Skills for India Students

The U.S. Department of State announces a new scholarship program intended for those young adults who have not had the opportunity for post secondary education. The Community College Initiatives Program is an opportunity for young adults to develop professional skills in the United States. This international educational exchange program enables individuals from selected countries, including India, to study at a community college in the United States.

The eligible fields are Agriculture, Applied Engineering, Business Management and Administration; Health Professions, including Nursing; Information Technology; Media; and Tourism and Hospitality Management.

Applications are due at the U.S. Consulate General, Hyderabad, by December 4, 2009.

The Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship For Indian Students At Stanford University, 2009

The Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship is the only full fellowship for Indian students with financial need in obtaining an MBA at Stanford; covering all financial costs related to tuition, books, accommodation, and travel.

Each year, Stanford may award up to five Fellowships:

Fellows will receive full financial support for the two-year Stanford MBA Program and for all fees associated with applying and attending.
Reliance and Stanford are dedicated to developing the next generation of leaders in India who are committed to the country’s human and socio-economic progress.
Within two years of completing their Stanford MBA studies, Reliance Dhirubhai Fellows are required to return to India for a period of at least two years employment in the public or private sector.

US Student Visa (F-1) processing fee and SEVIS I-901 fee

Prior to confirming a visa interview appointment online, you need to pay the following fees and obtain a Visa Fee Receipt from HDFC Bank.

When going to HDFC Bank, please carry with you a photocopy of the 1st page of the applicant's passport.

The fees payable at HDFC Bank per passport are: -
Visa Application Fee (MRV Fee): US $131 payable in INR equivalent at consular exchange rate. Visa Application Fee at current exchange rate (Rs. 50/-) is Rs. 6,550/-.

Service Charge: Rs.381/- which includes VFS’ service charge Rs366/- & Bank service charge Rs15/- (inclusive of Service Tax @ 12% and Education Cess Tax @0.36%)

IMPORTANT: The fee receipt gets activated 2 working days from date of issue. Do not attempt to take an appointment till then.

The above fees are not refundable. You must appear for an Interview within 1 year (365 days) from the date you purchased your fee receipt from HDFC Bank. If you do not appear for an Interview within one year after the purchase of your fee receipt, it will no longer be valid. The receipt is deemed as utilized once the interview has taken place, and cannot be used to make a subsequent appointment.

Leadership Awards for new Freshmen entering in the fall of 2008

Montana State University will be offering a limited number of Leadership Awards to new freshmen who will enter MSU in the fall of 2008. To be considered, students must print, complete and mail the Leadership Scholarship Application to MSU Admissions, P.O. Box 172190 by February 15, 2008. Previous leadership experience, activities, honors along with financial need and the amount of other scholarships already awarded by MSU may be considered in selecting recipients. Award amounts will vary from $500 to $2,500.

The 90/10 Scholarships

It is a special scholarship program for international students of limited financial means. The 90/10 plan provides a 90% tuition scholarship coupled with a 10% on-campus work requirement for a maximum of TEN international students each year. The scholarship is valid for 4 years for undergraduate students only. Under the 90/10 program, 90% of the tuition cost is waived; the students must engage in on-campus employment ten hours per week to cover the remaining 10 % of the tuition coast.

Partial Tuition Scholarships
All international students are eligible to apply for a fifty-percent tuition scholarship. Students who apply for but are not awarded a 90/10 scholarship are eligible for th fifty percent scholarship.

The current full cost of tuition at the college is $23,434 per year. The total expenditure for one academic year which includes tuition, fees, living expenses comes to $31, 780. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of documented financial need, academic excellence, school activities, the essay and teacher recommendations.

International Undergraduate Scholars Award (I-USA)

The I-USA Scholarship provides $60,000 ($15,000 annually for four years) for undergraduate coursework at USF. Up to three I-USA Scholarships per year will be offered to high achieving, first-time in college international students with proven leadership, volunteerism and community service. This scholarship is designed for international students whose permanent residence is outside the United States (US citizens, dual citizens and permanent residents or pending permanent residents are not eligible to apply). Recipients may be eligible for an additional award of $500 per year from the USF Honors College. To be considered for this award, you must complete the application by the February 15, 2008 deadline and meet the minimum requirements:

A high school GPA of 3.5 (as calculated by USF)

GEM Scholarships

Boise State University offers merit based tuition assistance program to non-resident students. There is no separate application form to apply for this assistance. The application material should be sent before the priority deadline of February 15 for Fall admission.

All students who possess an outstanding academic record, and who are not residents of Idaho are automatically considered for a Gem scholarship. This scholarship waives the total cost of non-resident tuition.

The current full cost of tuition at the college is $12, 578 per year. The total expenditure for one academic year which includes tuition, fees, living expenses comes to $24,220.

But the facts remain, if you have been involved in the whole application and admission process and worked sincerely towards getting your I-20s from Universities that you have well researched, then you have won half the battle. The next half is taking your visa appointment on time and preparing your documents with precision, especially the financial documents; and demonstrate good communication skills in the English language, to interact with the visa officers during the interview.

The visa officers have very little time to conduct interview, and must assess very quickly whether the documents and the answers determine a student's eligibility to receive a student visa.

Some information on the financial documents:

Proof of funds (Sponsor’s)Preferred documentation

· include 6 months of bank records, bank passbooks, chartered account
statements, Employment letter/Salary slip, IT Returns, Bank loan sanction letter, Fixed deposits, Post office savings, Provident Funds, documents pertaining to fixed assets(property, agricultural lands, Jewelry, Stocks/shares, etc) along with the valuator’s report.

· Prospective students must present documentary evidence that sufficient funds are, or will be, available from a specifically identified and reliable financial source to defray all living and school expenses during the entire period of anticipated study in the U.S. Specifically, the applicant must present credible evidence of enough readily available funds to meet all expenses for the first year of study and that, barring unforeseen circumstances, adequate funds will be available for each subsequent year of study.

· Part 7 on the I-20 shows the amount of funding you must have available to cover the first year’s expenses. The total amount includes tuition and fees, living expenses, expenses of dependents (if applicable), and other expenses (as applicable). You must prove that you have immediate funds available to cover this amount. If you are going to a two-years Master’s program, then you must also show that funds are or will likely be available to cover the same amount for the second year.

What kind of information should a student possess?

A student should

be well prepared and well informed about the University, program of study, costs, on going research in the respective departments; sum up your educational objectives.
be able to justify his/her choice of studying in the United States and how it would help in pursuing a career, back home in India.
demonstrate strong economic, social and cultural ties with one's home country.
be aware of the sponsors' ( preferably parents) vocation, income and nature of work.
be well acquainted with one's educational qualifications, University, college and credentials from India.
finally be able to demonstrate that he/she has sufficient funds currently available to pay the entire first year of study, and that funds will be available for all additional years until the course of study is to be completed.

What does the Visa officer look for in a student?

The visa officer is looking for students who are honest ( do not beat around the bush or cook up stories), well prepared ( no parroting ), motivated and confident (not over confident), Spontaneous ( spontaneity comes only when you are well prepared), articulate (does not mean you should speak in slang or put on an accent), clarity in communication, and projecting positive body language ( no nervous behaviour like fidgeting, yawning, chatting, etc). A student should be able to justify as to "why he/she deserves to secure a student visa".

What are the possible ( Very Common) questions a visa officer may ask?

Why did you select this particular University?
How many Universities did you apply to?
How many Universities accepted you?
Who are your sponsors?
Why are you considering United States as your study destination?
If I deny you a student visa, do you have an alternative educational plan?
What does your father or mother do?
What is their annual income?
Where are they employed and what is their nature of work?
Do you have any siblings?
What do they do?
Are you in touch with any professor in this University?
What is the specialization you intend to pursue in the university?
How do you think it will help in pursuing a career, back home in India?
Will you come back to India after your studies ?
What do you intend to do after you complete your studies?
Can you explain your strong ties with your home country?
Did you get any financial aid from the university?
Have you taken the TOEFL, GRE, GMAT or SAT?
Do you have any family members or relatives living in the US?
What project did you do in the final year of engineering?
How many backlogs do you have? Why?
Do you have any work experience?
What is the nature of your work?
What is your income?
Can you tell me a little more about your company or work place?

As long as a student is prepared for all these questions and has all the documents systematically compiled, getting a student visa will be easier than imagined. Doesn't it sound easier than a job interview?

Application Fee (MRV Fee) and Service Charge

Prior to confirming a visa interview appointment online, you need to pay the following fees and obtain a Visa Fee Receipt from HDFC Bank.

When going to HDFC Bank, please carry with you a photocopy of the 1^st page of the applicant's passport.

The fees payable at HDFC Bank per passport are:

Visa Application Fee (MRV Fee): $100 in Indian Rupee equivalent at consular rate of exchange. Rupee amount at current rate of exchange (Rs. 46) is Rs 4,600/-

This fee is payable in cash or by DD/HDFC Bank cheque favouring “US Embassy - Visa Fees”. DDs issued by cooperative banks are not accepted.

Service Charge: Rs.322/- which includes VFS’ service charge Rs310/- & Bank service charge Rs12/- (inclusive of Service Tax @ 12% and Education Cess Tax @0.24%)

VFS' Service Charge This service charge covers on-line/off-line or phone-in information, assistance with making appointment and return by courier of passports with the new visas.

This fee is payable in cash or by DD/HDFC Bank cheque favouring “HDFC Bank a/c VFS”. DDs issued by cooperative banks are not accepted.

IMPORTANT: The fee receipt gets activated 2 working days from date of issue. Do not attempt to take an appointment till then.

The above fees are not refundable. You must appear for an Interview within 1 year (365 days) from the date you purchased your fee receipt from HDFC Bank. If you do not appear for an Interview within one year after the purchase of your fee receipt, it will no longer be valid. The receipt is deemed as utilized once the interview has taken place, and cannot be used to make a subsequent appointment.

Step 2:

Return to this site and click on the Apply for a Non-immigrant Visa link once the fees are paid. You will need to use the bar code number from your HDFC Bank Fee Receipt and the Student's copy Sevis number mentioned on the I-20, in order to schedule an appointment.

Step 3:

Report to the US Embassy or Consulate where your appointment for a visa interview is scheduled. You will need to bring the printed Appointment Letter, the Visa Application Forms, one recent photograph, the original HDFC Bank Fee Receipt with its two barcode stickers. Applications without an original HDFC Bank Receipt or with an incorrect photograph will NOT be accepted.

Original Form DS-157 only if you are 15 to 55 years of age.
