BAY LEAVES ONE OF THESE IS NOT LIKE THE OTHER

Ever since we lost our Bay Laurel tree in one of the epic freezes, we've been buying bay leaves again. 2nd Man loves to cook with them. Recently, we found some new ones that definitely not the same, ha.

Can you tell by this photo?

Ha! They are both bay leaves but obviously not the same. He was excited to find these quality, fresher, darker green ones and so I got to thinking...

We need our own tree again!

I searched online and found a place and ordered one. The last one we had was small, and so I decided to pay a little extra to get a bigger one.

I ordered a 3 gallon size and they did not disappoint.

This one is 3' tall. Here is the image from the website and the one we got is almost identical.

We can't wait to find the perfect spot for it, but for now, it is in a pot on the back porch. Need to do a little research and see if just putting it in a large clay pot (we have a couple we could use) will work and then we can move it as needed.

We should get to harvest some leaves soon!

UTILITY SINK AND WATER COOLER

We figured we should start touring things we've done inside the house. Yes we are still unpacking, the garage is full of boxes as we slowly empty the storage unit, but we're getting there.

This is our garage utility sink.

It's next to the garage fridge. I found a cool metal basket/drainer that we had in storage from the old house. It fits great on here! This sink will be the perfect spot for washing veggies from the (future) garden, using the back grilling/cooking porch, cleaning pots and pans and other cooking things, etc. Having a deep utility sink like this will come in handy for sure.

The fridge is on one side and so what to put on the other side of it?

We moved our water cooler to the spot next to the sink! The great thing about this set up is that while it's close to the door from inside the house to the garage (if we need instant hot water or additional fresh water for something), it's also right NEXT to the outside door to the back yard. As I come in and out on mowing/working outside days, I can use this sink to clean up!

And here's the best part:

The five gallon water bottle fits in the sink perfectly so we can refill it! Remember, our water guy looked at our well water test results even before our whole house filter and said he would drink straight from the well without any worry. Of course, we went ahead and put in the whole house filter for a multitude of other reasons and after we did that, the installer said every faucet in the house will have Ozarka quality water coming out of it, ha.

This spot worked out perfectly. I can come in the back door on mowing days and get cold water for a break without going inside the house and then once I'm done, I can stop and wash my hands and clean up before going inside!

WILDLIFE SATURDAY

We were cooking dinner not too long ago and looked out the kitchen window and saw this...

...just a couple of deer strolling through the driveway and front yard. Nothing like a wonderful meal, a couple glasses of wine and some local wildlife just casually saying hello.

We love it out there here!

RECLAIMING RAIN WATER

When we didn't have our well to water our plants, we've left the wheelbarrows to sit upright and left some of the 5 gallon buckets out next to the barn and shed. Even after we got the well, before we moved in I only had to go a few times to fill up the buckets.

That's because all other times, I used rainwater!

We really wanted to see how it would work and how much water we could reclaim.

We are amazed at how much we collect! This is one of the wheelbarrows after a rain (and I had already dipped in a bucket for some water)...

These three 5-gallon buckets were full up to the top (I had already used some of one bucket before I thought to take photos). Fifteen gallons of water here just ready to use. Now this is just to water the plants we had temporarily put behind the barn until we were out here and could use the hose.

But what that did was make us realize that we should really look into reclaiming/harvesting rainwater.

Now that we have our gutters, it should be easier to adapt something for use. Doing some research now!

GUTTER GUARDS

We recently posted HERE about our new gutters. This was something we found online that was recommended to us and we think is a good extra level of protection, especially being rural.

They are gutter guards, used to prevent animals from going up the downspout. They often use them as ladders to access roofs or as nesting sites. The most common culprits are squirrels, mice and rats. We also read that lizards and snakes can climb them looking for insects or other creatures, giving them access to the roof and possible points of entry. Worst case, they can even become trapped in a downspout and die, and we SURE don't want that.

We bought them HERE on Amazon. They are a little pricey but well-made and heavy duty for sure. They screw on (screws included) and come in a variety of colors to match various gutter colors.

The piece at the end comes slides off for easy cleaning if you need to let leaves or debris out of the gutter.

We bought eight of them and put them on all of our downspouts.

They fit fairly tight with pressure, but they do have holes and come with screws for attaching them to the downspout. It was super easy.

A couple had to be turned sideways because of the way the gutter was mounted but hey, as long as it does the job and keeps out creatures, we are fine with that.

BACK ON THE ZEN MACHINE

The first official mow of the year is in the books.

The service shop dropped it off a couple weeks ago and I had to wait for some rainy weather to finally clear out.

I am finally able to start clearing some of the areas "post construction" that had grown up a lot. Wish I had a before pic of this but suffice to say, it was heavily overgrown. This area still has some construction debris, concrete chunks and such in it so I have to walk it first and move stuff or mow around it for now.

Also cleared around the well shed and Barnabas (the big mesquite). I got as close as I could but will have to use the string trimmer for the closer to the tree.

It was a usually time, about an hour and a half and did about three acres. The weather was cool and it was definitely a moment of Zen...until...

Speaking of construction debris, I looked at the mower before I closed the shed doors and thought, "what's wrong with the mower?". Oh crap, a flat tire. Sigh. This mower has never had the tires treated with that awesome green good,, ha, so I will be off to the store soon to get some tire Slime.

There won't be any mowing this weekend because it is supposed to rain all day Saturday so I'll have time to get that and get the tires fixed.

And hey, now I have a concrete driveway to do this type of work on! Can't wait! It will certainly be much easier.

DANGER IN THE WELLHOUSE

So this weekend, I was outside in the beautiful weather and decided to check out the well shed. I opened the door and looked inside. Mostly clear, a few crickets hopped around and then I saw these two.

I took a picture from up high...see them there? Here, let me get closer...

This was the first one. Sorry, this one is a bit blurry, I was in the dark, with an LED light, trying to keep my hand steady enough to take a picture. It might be hard to make out the mark on the abdomen.

But in this next one, it will become clear what they were...

BLACK WIDOWS!!

Yikes! The well house is the perfect spot of course, dark, no one going in and out all the time, humid. Spiders love that. There are also some Daddy Longlegs in there, but those won't cause harm to you, ha.

I took the Stem spray (for spiders) and dispatched them quickly. We can't have dangerous spiders in a spot we (and technicians/repair people) have to go into to check/adjust things.

We just have to be careful!

GOOD FOOD AND KITTY CAT SUNDAY

Another week has flown by. The other day, the Zen Machine was returned after its "spa time" and it will be mowing time. The weather has turned unusually cool, and we'll take it!

This is one of our favorite, quick, go to meals. We roasted some chicken and asparagus. Yes, we do pull the skin off before we eat it, It's just prettier in a picture with it on there, ha.

We like asparagus so much, we are thinking of a special raised bed just for that (starting to make our garden plans for later this year) because it's a perennial.

Here is Babygirl enjoying the same cool weather. Still a little skittish at times but coming around. When we go out and "talk" to her, she rolls around like this. You think she is fitting in? Making herself comfortable? Ha.

BOBCAT SIGHTING

Well, apparently it's a regular Animal Kingdom out here at the farm, ha. The other morning I went outside from the back door of the garage and I saw movement. When I realized what it was, I quickly went back inside and I took this picture.

Kind of hard to tell here, he/she ran back there and then looked at me looking at it...

Here it is. A bobcat! I wish I had a clearer picture but I was inside taking it through the window. I did enhance it some so we could make out features. Then I found a good comparison picture online...

SPRING IS BLOOMING OUT ALL OVER

Things are budding out!

The new peach tree we got last Fall...

One of these days/evenings, I need to get working on the fruit tree beds and clean them all up and add soil and mulch for the season before it gets to hot out there. I have to remind myself that we live here now, this doesn't have to be a few hours on a Saturday project once a week. I can do one or two a night when I get home from work. Or half on Saturday and the other half on Sunday. It's a whole new way of thinking/living, ha.

GOOD FOOD A METEOR AND OUTSIDE KITTY WEEKEND

Happy weekend! Well we had a good weekend with a little overhead excitement thrown into the mix.

First up, we had some good food. 2nd Man made this dish using some whole wheat noodles with cubed pork, mushrooms onions and seasonings. So good.

Jack, the one eyed kitty, eats at the end of the porch so he's not as nervous coming all the way up onto the porch. He is SO feral, could be a factor of him only seeing out of one eye. He is probably just having to be extra cautious.

Now for the excitement...

We were sitting here on Saturday afternoon and heard a huge boom. "J" texted us and said "please tell me you heard that", we did but weren't sure what it was. She said her windows rattled and plates in the cabinets made noise as well. We didn't notice that (maybe the house being so new, everything is still tight). We weren't sure if a plane had crashed or a pipeline had blown up. Calls started pouring into local media and police.

A couple of hours later, NASA confirmed it was a large meteor, weighing about a ton, streaking through the sky at about 35,000 mph before breaking up just a few miles away. Though not yet confirmed, it even appears one house North of Houston was struck by a piece that came through the roof, the attic, the ceiling, struck the floor, cracked the slab and bounced back up, hit a TV and went through the wall! I guess that's what 35,000 mph does, ha.

We would like to have seen the streak in the sky.

Or maybe not, ha.

THREE FREE TREE SAPLINGS

Our nearby Master Gardener program had a free tree giveaway. Well, saplings, but hey, saplings become trees someday!

They did it in conjunction with Texas A&M University AG program. There were a choice of six trees, each household could only get three. And you couldn't get all the same. We wanted three pecan trees but since we couldn't do that, we did our research and chose a Nuttall Oak, a Shumard Oak and the Pecan.

I asked them about the pecan variety, they said it was just a native Texas variety but weren't sure.

They had (as always) a well oiled process to keep things organized and running smoothly. In about 15 minutes, I was on my way home with our three saplings.

Here they are. They suggested soaking them in water overnight to rehydrate the roots and then getting them into some soil. I did that and then the next day, I headed to the garden center to get some soil.

I got the soil and found this. I figured it would be fun to try out.

And sure enough it worked great for scooping soil from the bags into the clay pots.

Here they are, planted and watered and ready to watch for tiny new leaves (stay tuned for that). They said we can let them grow in these large pots until the Fall when it's best to plant them (if not planting now). I asked them about this because I figured if I stuck these in the ground like this now, they'd struggle and risk being eaten by a wild animal or mowed over by me, ha. One of the Master Gardeners told me to just let them grow in these until Fall, when they should be a good size to get them in the ground.

Now we wait to watch their progress. We don't know where we will plant them yet but with all these acres, we have plenty of choices. One of our goals this year is to get a lot, if not all, of our property professionally cleaned up. Then we can find the perfect spot for these "forever trees", away from the house.

GOOD FOOD AND OUTDOOR CAT SUNDAY

It's been a productive weekend. Saturday was errand running day, bought some things we needed. Then Sunday, we got more stuff out of storage, including our dining room table from the old farmhouse so we can use it on the screened in porch. I have to put the legs back on it and get it all cleaned up but it should be fun to start working on that space.

In the meantime, time for some good food and a kitty picture!

2bd Man made some piccadillo, a dish using ground turkey and lots of veggies, sautéed/simmered in a tomato based sauce. Served with some cilantro lime rice. It was delicious!

We have a ring doorbell and it sends us alerts. It uses AI to see what is in the image and then sends an alert. How is this for a specific alert? So what was there when we looked out the window?

This is babygirl just relaxing in a chair on the porch. Side note, that's one of our trash to treasure finds from the apartment recycling area. We knew we'd use it for something but didn't know it would be a spot for our farmhouse kitty!

WE HAVE QUAIL

Well, in our newly acquired hobby of birdwatching, we are now seeing a lot of quail coming to visit.

Saw these in the back yard. At first we were like "what are those birds?" and then I looked and told 2nd Man "I think those are quail". I went out there and zoomed in to get a closer up picture...

The color is a bit off than what they were. They were more of a brown color, but it was early in the day and they had moved over to a shaded area but sure enough, we have quail.

Here is a great photo of the common quail in our part of Texas, it is called the Northern Bobwhite quail. It was fun to watch them.

We would love to attract more of them to our property. From what we've read, they are mostly a ground dwelling type of bird.

Anyone have any quail advice?

PUTTING UP SMOKED TURKEY

Forgot to post this. After the holidays, I found some smoked turkey legs on clearance. We like using the meat in a pot of beans, as it's a much healthier option than ham. They are precooked since they are smoked but we like to boil them for a couple of hours. It lets us skim off any fat and makes the meat fall apart tender.

Though they had the wings, we like the legs, seem to get a bit more meat for your money.

The pot filler comes in handy!

After they have boiled for a couple of hours, we pour out the water. It's literally falling off the bone tender.

Took about 10 minutes to get all the meat off the bones (those tendons are a pain, ha).

We ended up with 6 cups, divided into 2 cup packages, vacuum sealed and put in the freezer for future use (three big pots of bean soup).

FARM TRUCK ANNIVERSARY

Five years ago today, we bought the farm truck!

For those that don't know or are new to the blog, it's a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado work truck model. No extended cab or anything fancy and extra, it even has the old school handles to "roll down" the windows (young people don't have a clue about that, ha!)

I work in insurance and one of our clients called one day to say they had a truck for sale and asked if we knew anyone who might want it. It had 224,000 miles on it but was well taken care of (mechanically, a few dents and dings outside and the interior was definitely "lived in", ha). It was only one owner from 2006 when he bought it. The price was too good to pass up, $1000...I came home and told 2nd Man about it and he and I looked at each other and said, "yep that could come in handy!"

We bought it, put some new tires on it, took it to a mechanic and had the urgent stuff worked on (surprisingly, not that much was needed) and it joined the family. We call it "Bill", named after the owner who, sadly, passed away a few months later.

I've trimmed limbs and bushes and used it to haul it to a compost pile...

I've driven it to the well to get water...

...then driven the water to the plants that needed it.

We used it for boxes and moving supplies.

We moved stuff to storage during construction.

And now we are moving the same stuff back into the new house.

I picked up the plants that we bought at the master gardener sale. I've also been to garden centers for soil and mulch...

...that I can then just drive around to get the supplies to where I need them. When I was picking up the plants recently, there were people loading wet trees and bushes into the backend of high-end SUV's. We don't have to worry about that now.

We've put about 2000 miles on it in the last five years.

It ain't a looker, that's for sure, but it sure was worth it! I like this picture that I made to look kind of old. It fits in out here on the farm perfectly. I tell 2nd Man all the time that this was the best money we ever spent!

We love it. Everyone needs an old truck, ha!

RED WHITE AND BLUE POTATOES

Regular readers know that I like to take random pics of fruits and vegetables because sometimes, well, they just look so cool.

Saw these recently at the store and took the picture. Red, white and blue fingerling potatoes. Whoever organized these did a great job, ha.

Side note, we have always loved these smaller, fingerling potatoes, they cook quickly and add lots of interest to the plate or dish you are preparing.

I've often wondered if they are easy to grow or if it's just better to buy them at the store, ha.

Anyone ever try growing these types of heirlooms?

SPECIAL CABINETS FOR CUTTING BOARDS AND SHEET PANS

You may remember me mentioning I helped to create a dream kitchen for 2nd Man. Part of having a dream kitchen is to make sure you have easy access to your stored cooking items.

Since we designed our island, we planned for these.

There are two cabinets, one on each end. Normally, there is an inset on the end of the island that either occupies these spaces or it's dead space or some people put in a bookshelf or something. We will have plenty of bookcase space elsewhere so we decided to let them put slender cabinets on each side because we knew exactly how they would be used.

The island is, of course, conveniently located right behind the stove/cooktop/ovens.

This the end closest to the sink.

Of course, the cabinets come with two shelves. In this case, I removed one of them and put the other up at the top and created a place for all of our cutting boards! The tall ones fit nicely in the bottom and then the top shelf can hold the smaller ones just stacked on top of each other. This gives us quick access, it's right below the island countertop so we can quickly pull them out to use them, it's opposite the knife drawer (more on that coming soon) and lastly, it's also next to the sink so we can wash veggies etc before cutting.

Here is the other end, directly across from the ovens which makes it convenient for...

...sheet pans! Just like the other cabinet above, it had two shelves but in this case I removed both because, well, baking sheets are large. 2nd Man likes to have all three sizes, full, half and quarter. He also keeps the cooling/roasting racks (that fit the sheet pans) in here as well. Once again, its convenient location puts it right by the ovens and under the island countertop so it it super easy to get a sheet pan out, put one some foil or parchment paper and things are ready for the oven behind you.

GOOD FOOD AND OUTDOOR CAT SUNDAY (FIRST CONTACT)

Yep, we're going to start a new post on Sundays, since we have several outside cats coming and going now, ha.

First up some good food.

I always love when 2nd Man makes a frittata.

We went to a Farmer's Market a week or so ago and got some peppers. They are always so pretty chopped up, ha. Like a sunset.

Mixed it with onions, mostly egg whites (to keep it healthier) with a couple of whole eggs, a few other herbs and seasonings and then some low fat cheddar that we love to use. Put it all together...

...and out comes a wonderful, filling dish! Breakfast, lunch OR dinner, it's always good!

But here's what you all really want to see:

Look! I was able to not only get this close for a picture of baby girl (yeah, we need a better name, ha)...

...but we are able to TOUCH her!

It's brief, she's still a little skittish, but she's just the softest, sweetest little kitty. She's starting to trust us and that's a good thing!

ZEN MACHINE UPDATE

It's getting that time of year! Zen Machine time!

This year's mowing season will be the first ever with us living out here. I can't wait.

This past weekend, I decided to mow, the grass is green and Spring is coming! The first mow of the year.

It looks so neat and tidy when it's done.

It was about the usual amount of time.

But there was another reason I had to go ahead and mow now, in February. Zen Machine tuneup time.

It will be gone a week or two and I didn't want the grass to get super tall between now and then.

They will change filters, sharpen blades, lube belts, air up the tires, etc. It's a pretty good deal and we usually have this done at this time every year because they have a "Winter Maintenance special" that includes free pick up and delivery.

And this year for the first time, I could park it in the driveway!

They came yesterday and picked it up. Bye Zen Machine, enjoy your spa day!

WE HAVE GUTTERS

We know, we know, another not so exciting topic. Here it goes anyway, ha. One thing that our builder didn't provide was gutters. The reasoning is that every home sits differently on different properties and the way water flows off your roof and onto your land can be different. You want to make sure your gutters are designed around that flow of water.

As they said, most people want to be in the home for a bit to decide how they are doing to do their landscaping, flower beds and such and where they want the rainwater to go.

We found a great local gutter company. They came out and designed a plan for us and then came out and installed them all in an afternoon.

They are seamless gutters...meaning the long, straight sections are made of one continuous piece of metal. The only seams are at the joints and downspouts like this. They also matched our trim color perfectly.

Here is a picture of part of the back of the house. Gutters all along the back with four downspouts (two are just out of the shot).

Here is one of them, the other side of the dining room by the back door to the garage...

...and here is the other one at the end of the garage. This part will be nice to keep the water from pouring off the roof and splashing onto the concrete.

Here is the front...our roof lines presented some challenges, but they did it right, down to creating small sections of gutter (as above) to direct the water.

On corners, they added these "splash guards" (or damming deflectors as they are sometimes called). This is to prevent heavy rainfall from becoming a high-volume overflow at those corner spots.

The last unique thing is this "captive area" we have. We had to have a gutter downspout here since it was an important corner for handling runoff. However, because of this area being surrounded on all sides by concrete (porch, driveway, sidewalk), we didn't want to create a ponding situation in there. The concrete guy put in two underground drains there to handle the rainwater and direct it out of the area into the front yard. What they did was connect this downspout to one of those drains so the water from there will flow under the sidewalk and into the front yard. They are coming back to dig a trench to put this underground.

Here is the front, the gutters blend in perfectly. We love it and are excited to have them. Now we just need a good rain to see how it all works, ha.

Side note, grass is greening up! Spring is coming!

OH DEER

One morning, as we were getting something ready for dinner, we looked out the dining room window and saw this! A buck looking back this way.

The picture was through the window so it wasn't as sharp as I would have liked but if I had gone outside, he would have run off.

But here it is zoomed in.

Then a few days later, we looked out the front window at the kitchen sink and saw movement. There were a couple more deer!

While the buck was on the property behind us, these two were on our property, the part of our acreage that is undeveloped/uncleared so there is no telling how many deer are out there. It's about 7 acres or so of dense brush and trees so there could be a small herd out there. We aren't hunters at all, so they are welcome to live their lives safely there. Just don't eat the garden when we get it built, ha. They have left the fruit trees alone since I put up the fishing line.

We love living out here!

PUTTING UP ROLLS INTO BREAD CUBES

2nd Man made some rolls recently and we ate a few but then we had a lot leftover.

That was by design because ultimately, we wanted to make them into bread cubes.

We cut them into cubes (more or less, ha). I put them onto a couple of parchment lined sheet pans and popped them in the freezer overnight.

The next day, I took them off and put them in a gallon size freezer bag. We didn't vacuum seal these because we didn't want to smash them...plus they'll be easy to pull out to use just a few at a time.

We had a salad the other night and 2nd Man threw a few in the air fryer after spritzing them with some avocado oil and some garlic and onion powder.

They were SO good.

THE CAT DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM HAS FOUND US

Welp, it was bound to happen.

Just after the first of the year, well, about a month ago, it seems the famous cat distribution system found us out here in the country.

Not just once...

Not just twice...

BUT THREE times!

We have three kitties visiting us now!

The gray one apparently has only one good eye (he is blind in one it seems) and he is VERY feral. If he just hears us at the door, he is gone. We think he lives near or under the barn/shed right now.

The orange one lives up to his color, he's spicy! Semi-feral. He will run away too but not far as he maintains a safe enough distance from us and watches us.

The last one, well, she is a sweetheart. She wants love in the worst way. She rolls around when we talk to her. We might have some luck with her.

SO one day at lunch, for the first time in months...

I found myself once again in the cat food aisle at the store! We bought some cat food and a bowl. Let the feline games begin!

Our goal is to get them tame enough to take them in to get them spayed and neutered to do the right thing.

In the meantime, it looks like we have some outdoor cats now.

GOOD FOOD ON DAYTONA WEEKEND

It's been a crazy weather weekend. Saturday was humid and warm...

...then a front came through. Scary skies but it was quick moving. Dumped a lot of rain but it was quick moving and today is beautiful, though a bit windy.

Saturday, I made our food for the weekend.

It is time for our semi-annual tradition of BBQ ribs and coleslaw. I did the lean pork ribs, baked up on a rack for even less fat, and the coleslaw is broccoli slaw with all the seasonings and greek yogurt instead of mayo. Homemade pickled onions and some sandwich bread.

Daytona weekend! We are racing fans and it's the big weekend for NASCAR. Holding out hope the weather in Florida cooperates, so far it has, fingers crossed. We have an amazing new TV in our new house and this has been the first race of the season.

Let's hope the green flag is in the air!
