София е една от най-древните европейски столици. Нейната история може да се проследи до времето на неолита. Следи от няколко неолитни селища са открити на нейна територия (около днешния Дворец, както и в днешния квартал Слатина), които датират от 5000 г.пр.н.е.
През VII век пр.н.е. на север от топлия минерален извор, близо до река Елешница (днешната Владайска), възниква древен тракийски град, документиран по-късно от римляните като Сердика — име, за което се приема, че произлиза от местното тракийско племе серди, което живее в околностите на града. Професор Александър Фол изразява съмнение в реалното съществуване на племе серди, тъй като това име се появява много по-късно, далече след създаването на града, през III век. Рилският манастир е един от културно-историческите паметници в България, който е включен в списъка за световното наследство на Юнеско. Разположен на 1,147 метра надморска височина сред ухаещите иглолистни гори на планината Рила.
Рилският манастир се отличава с уникална архитектура. Отвън, с 24-метровите каменни стени на основните си сгради, които образуват неправилен петоъгълник, манастирът има вид на крепост. Затова поклонникът или туристът, който попада във вътрешността през една от двете железни порти, остава изненадан от мекотата на архитектурните форми: арки и колонади, покрити дървени стълби и резбовани чардаци, зад които са килиите – 300-400 на брой. В средата на калдъръмения двор в странна симбиоза съжителстват суровите бойници на Хрельовата кула и бароковите сребърни куполи на главната църква. В средата на вътрешния двор се издига най-старата сграда в комплекса – впечатляваща каменна кула, създадена от местния феодал Севастократор Хрелю през 1334-1335 г. Непосредствено до нея стои и малка църква, която е само няколко години по-млада (1343 г.). В по-нови времена (1844 г.) към кулата е добавена и камбанария. Приблизително от същия период датира и главната манастирска черква “Рождество Богородично”. Архитект е майстор Петър Иванович, който работи по нея межу 1834 и 1837 г. Храма е 5-куполен, с три олтарни ниши и два странични параклиса. Едно от най-ценните неща вътре е иконостаса със своята невероятна дърворезба. Стенописите са завършени през 1846 г. и са дело на много майстори, но само известния Захари Зограф се е подписал под своите рисунки. В църквата има и голям брой стойностни икони, създадени между 14-ти и 19-ти век.

Преди около 230 млн. години (в края на палеозойската ера) в този район се наслоили песъчливо-мергелни скали. По-късно те били залети от море, на дъното на което се отлагали довлечените от реките пясък, чакъл и глина. С течение на времето тези материали били свързани от силициева или пясъчно-глинеста спойка. Така се получили конгломерати и пясъчници, известни като пъстър пясъчник (бундзандщайн). Поради обагрянето с железен окис те придобили червеникав оттенък. През юрския период върху пясъчниците се наслоили сиви и кремавобели варовици. Те изграждат челата на сегашните Белоградчишки Венец и Ведерник. При нагъването на Стара планина този район се превръща в суша. В най-високата му част се появили пукнатини, където започнала разрушителната работа на водата, ветровете и колебанията на температурата. Тази дейност достигнала до пясъчниците. Поради нееднаквата им твърдост те се рушали неравномерно. Така в продължение на милиони години се създали причудливите форми на Белоградчишките скали. В пясъчника и варовика се образували и над 100 пещери, богати на красиви образувания, пропасти,пещери и интересна фауна. Най-известната пещера - Магура (дължина над 2 500 м) е благоустроена - осветление, обезопасителни съоръжения. Заедно с района около нея е обявена за природна забележителност.

Историческият музей в град Белоградчик е основан през 1970 г. и се помещава в "Пановата къща" - образец на западно българската възрожденска архитектура. Този паметник на културата е построен през 1810 г. и е запазил възрожденския си лик и до днес. Експозицията в музея е посветена на Османския период и Възраждането и отразява развитието на занаяти като златарство, дърворезбарство, абаджийство, терзийство, мутафчийство, грънчарство, медникарство. Основният фонд включва над 6000 експоната. Голяма част от експозицията акцентира върху въстанието срещу турския поробител от 1850 г. с център град Белоградчик – едно от най-масовите въстания в българските земи. Маркирани са и събитията, свързани с освобождението на Белоградчик от робството и тези със сръбско-българската война от 1885 г. Музеят разполага с богата колекция на монети и икони. Показан е домашния бит, народни носии и предмети на бита. Женските накити - обеци, невестенски венци, пръстени и наушници са богато украсени с цветни стъкълца, седеф и висулки. В дворът на музея са експонирани антични надгробни паметници.

Една от последните крепости (тогава с име Белград), завладяна от турците в края на XIV век. Последните настаняват тук гарнизон, играещ важна роля в охраната на западните области на държавата и в потушаването на въстанията на българското население.

В периода 1805-1837 год. се разширява и преустроява за огнестрелно оръжие под ръководството на френски и италиански инженери. Паметните плочи във връзка със строежа са на турски и български език - единствен случай в историята на строежите на турските крепости. Състои се от 3 двора (всеки с възможност за самостоятелна защита) с обща площ 10 211 кв. м и едно отделно укрепление. Има две главни порти - Видин капия и Ниш капия. На крепостните стени (височина до 10 м) са изградени амбразури за пушки. За оръдията са построени три бастиона за 15-16 оръдия. Във военно време броят на защитниците на крепостта и околните възвишения достига до 3000 души. Белоградчишката крепост е обявена за паметник на културата,през 1985 г. с национална значение,пригодена за масови посещения.

От най-високата част на крепостта известна като Първа плоча се разкрива неповторима панорама.На юг погледът гали нагънатото било на Стара Планина, от връх Ком до Връшка чука , на запад е привлечен от островърхите медни планини на Карпатите , а в ниското намира покой във фантастиката на Белоградчишките скали. D'où vient, cher Le Vayer, que l'homme le moins sage
Croit toujours seul avoir la sagesse en partage,
Et qu'il n'est point de fou, qui, par belles raisons,
Ne loge son voisin aux Petites-Maisons ?
Un pédant enivré de sa vaine science,
Tout hérissé de grec, tout bouffi d'arrogance,
Et qui, de mille auteurs retenus mot pour mot,
Dans sa tête entassés, n'a souvent fait qu'un sot,
Croit qu'un livre fait tout, et que, sans Aristote,
La raison ne voit goutte, et le bon sens radote.
D'autre part un galant, de qui tout le métier
Est de courir le jour de quartier en quartier,
Et d'aller, à l'abri d'une perruque blonde,
De ses froides douceurs fatiguer le beau monde,
Condamne la science, et, blâmant tout écrit,
Croit qu'en lui l'ignorance est un titre d'esprit :
Que c'est des gens de cour le plus beau privilège,
Et renvoie un savant dans le fond d'un collège.
Un bigot orgueilleux, qui, dans sa vanité,
Croit duper jusqu'à Dieu par son zèle affecté,
Couvrant tous ses défauts d'une sainte apparence,
Damne tous les humains, de sa pleine puissance.
Un libertin d'ailleurs, qui, sans âme et sans foi,
Se fait de son plaisir une suprême loi,
Tient que ces vieux propos de démons et de flammes
Sont bons pour étonner des enfants et des femmes,
Que c'est s'embarrasser de soucis superflus,
Et qu'enfin tout dévot a le cerveau perclus.
En un mot, qui voudrait épuiser ces matières,
Peignant de tant d'esprits les diverses manières,
Il compterait plutôt combien, dans un printemps,
Guénaud et l'antimoine ont fait mourir de gens,
Et combien la Neveu, devant son mariage,
A de fois au public, vendu son p...

Résolution de maître Adam de ne plus aimer son ingrate par la
protestation qu'il en fait à son confesseur

Mon Père à deux genoux j'accuse mes malices,
Avec un repentir profond et solennel,
Et pour ne point tromper votre soin paternel,
Je laisse de Phillis les aimables supplices.

Éloignant ces beaux yeux, mes souverains complices,
Je change en une nuit un beau jour éternel,
Et si pour bien aimer on devient criminel,
C'est trop peu que l'enfer pour expier mes vices.

Puisqu'il faut obéir aux lois du Tout-puissant,
Pour un si grand sujet je suis obéissant,
En brisant de mes fers la douce violence.

Ha qu'en ce changement je me trouve étonné !
Et que j'ai peu besoin de votre pénitence,
Si cherchant mon salut je passe pour damné.
