History:

In the year 1813, a Military Battalion in which one Suriti Appaiah, a Doli Bearer was transferred to Ujjaini. At the time Cholera broke out in a virulent firm, and thousands of people died. Suriti Appaiah and his associates went to Mahakali Devasthanam at Ujjaini and prayed that if the people are saved from the epidemic, they would install the idol of Mahakali, Secunderabad.

Accordingly after return from Ujjaini, Sri Suriti Appaiah and his associates have installed the idol of Goddess Mahakali made of wood at Secunderabad in July 1815. During construction of sanctum sanctorum a stone idol named as Manikyalamma was found and that the said idol was also installed besides Sri Mahakali Ammavaru.

In the year 1964, a stone idol of Goddess Mahakali was installed. Later on Sri Suriti Appaiah with the help of Philanthropic persons has developed the Devasthanam. Subsequently Endowments Department has taken over the Management of the Devasthanam. Sri Suriti Krishna the great grandson of the Founder has been recognized as Member of the Founder’s Family who is also taking keen interest for the proper Management of the Devasthanam.

One Sri Ammanabolu Nagabhushanam a philanthropic devotees and prominent businessmen of Secunderabad constructed Kalyana Mandapam by the side of the Devasthanam. Several devotees have been contributing for the development of the Devasthanam. By such contribution a Rudrakshe Mandapam made of Silver has been arranged in Garbhalayam. The Garbhalaya Dwaram is covered by ornamental Silver Sheets, etc.,

There are several oldest temples in Andhra Pradesh in which exist famous goddess temples like “Kanakadurga“ at Vijayawada , ”Bhadrakali” at Warrangal etc. “Sri Ujjaini Mahakali” temple in Telangana region at Secunderabad which is 191 years old. It is visited and prayers offered to the goddess by unending large number of devotees everyday in general and in particularly thousands of devotees in Ashada jathara on principal days which falls on Sunday and Monday. There is no doubt about granting the wishes of devotees by the goddess and devotees fulfilling the vows.

The goddess Ujjain Mahakali sits in a Padmasana posture with four hands with sword, spear, damaru, vessel of amrut, is a beautiful stone idol. It is said by some people that this idol was brought from Ujjain. This idol is covered and fixed with vendi kavacham(silver shield). By the side of Sri Ujjain Mahakali is the goddess of “Manikyaladevi”.

There are no historical records about the existence of this temple. This temple is a symbol of devotion of Shri Suriti Appaiah garu resident of secunderabad as Shri Rama temple at Bhadrachalam is symbol of devotee Bhakta Ramdas of those days.

Shri Suriti Appaiah garu was working in the military in the year 1813.A.D. Shri Suriti Appaiah along with others(Army bearers) was sent to Ujjain as mason. Everyday Shri Appaiah garu visited Mahankali goddess temple and prayed her with utmost devotion during the entire period of his stay at Ujjain.

Shri Appaiah garu became an ardent devotee of the powerful goddess at Ujjain.On one day he has prostrated at her feet and offered prayers expressing gratitude for success of their mission to Ujjain and for showing the way for return journey, also prayed in many respects and expressed his wish that her idol will be installed at Secunderabad for offering prayers for ever. All of them returned to Secunderabad from Ujjain after the goddess felt happy and blessed Shri Appaiah garu for his selfless devotion. She also bestowed kindness on him.

In the month of July 1815, Shri Appaiah garu installed a idol made of wood at the place where the present temple is existing and conducting pujas. He built the walls around the idol and constructed a small temple named “Ujjain Mahankali” temple.

It is said that in those olden days this place was inhabited by trees, insects, rocks and lakes. There was a big well and when repairs were being carried out by digging an idol named “Manikyalamma” was found. The same idol can be seen today in the sanctorum of the temple towards Ujjaini Mahankali’s right side. In the year 1864 A.D Shri Appaiah garu replaced wooden idol and installed the two idols of “Mahankali” and “Mnikyalamma” as per the Hindu sastras and relevant pujas. Later, Shri Sanjivaiah the son of Shri Surirti Appaiah garu collected some amount in his village along with his friends got constructed the mandapam in the year 1900 A.D. Shri Laxmaiah (mesthri and representing of army bearer) son of Shri Sanjivaiah collected some amount and constructed few shops along side the temple entrance as a source of income. In the year 1914 A.D Shri Kistaiah son of Shri Laxmaiah formed a committee to conduct daily pujas and archanas by appointing a brahman(Shri Ogirala Subbaiah garu). Sons of Shri Kistaiah and Chikoti Chandraiah garu, prominent vysyas and their family members continued their efforts for the development of Shri Ujjaini Mahankali temple. In the year 1947 A.D the endowment department of the then state government constituted a committee and arranged a Brahman, Shri Yendapalli Venkataramaiah for the purpose of conducting rituals to the goddess.

In the year 1953 A.D endowment department of the then state government arranged board of trustees though the first founder was Shri Appaiah garu, there is a saying that family members of the army bearers also involved in the establishment of the Ujjaini Mahankali temple. The chairman, president, committee members honorary secretary etc are making necessary efforts to develop the temple further.

Annual Events:

SHRI AMMAVARI JATHARA: In Andhra Pradesh Shri Ammavari jathara has become very popular.

1.Ghatothsavam :

In the month of Ashada on first Sunday this celebration will begin. At the Karbala Maidan Ghatam is decorated with flowers etc and then brought in a procession with music and band in the manner of “Vampuja” for the goddess similar to a bridegroom’s procession. This is called “Yedorkolupu”. On reaching, the Ghatam is kept in the temple.

From the next day onwards, the Ghatam goes to every house, dwelling of each basti/street for fifteen days with a small procession with music and mangal vadyam.

2.Kolupu Potharaju Bali :

Kolupu takes place on completion of 15 days. This is conducted on Sunday. In olden days “animal sacrifice” was made as a custom for goddess. At one stroke the of the buffalo was cut and fell down. This separated head was kept on the head of a person and went round the temple scattering the bali samagri dancing, jumping, displaying the skill of a potharaju. The entire site was very beautiful to look at when making rounds of the temple. But recently since, 25 years the “animal sacrifice” is prohibited, in its place “Kushmanda Bali” (Gummadikaya Bali) is being done as per the traditional procedure. As per the greatness of goddess “animal sacrifice was done in unlimited number and blood flowed down in various directions. The same night rain would fall and the entire area spread with blood is washed away and the premises got cleaned. (Even today on the day of Jatara rain falls).

3.Rangam :

Rangam is worth witnessing during the period of Ammavari Jatara. Inside the temple in front of the goddess an unmarried woman stand on a unburnt pot looking at the idol with utmost devotion and prayers. The mother goddess immediately responds and pronounce the good events going to take place in the coming year. Thousands of devotees gather near the temple and hear the Rangam with apt attention.

4.Saganamputa(Farewell) :

On Monday the Ghatam is bid farewell with great pomp and show in a procession. At Mettuguda the decoration of the Ghatam is taken away. People who join the Jatara experience in their as a memorable event for ever.

Poojas:

As per the Vedas daily poojas are conducted. On Friday special decorated archanas are being performed.Celebration of Navarathris are performed in the month of Ashwayujam with beautiful floral decorations for the goddess. Saptasathi homamas are performed. Thousands of devotees men, women and children will have the darshan of goddess and get blessed.

Daily Sashwata Annadanam scheme , The devotees who join the scheme will have to pay Rs.5516/- (Five thousand five hundred and sixteen only) and 5916 for online payment option with payment gateway service tax to the temple.

UMAMAHESHWARAM

Umamaheshwaram (also known as Maheshwaram and Umamaheshrum) is a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is in the picturesque Nallamala forest range around 100 kilometers away from Hyderabad on the Hyderabad-Srisailam highway. It is atop the hill 4 km from Rangapur Village, Achampet, MahabubNagar on Hyderabad-Srisailam highway NH7.

Umamaheshwaram is the northern gateway of Srisailam — one of the jyotirlingas. It is mentioned in many Vedas that visit to a Srisailam without Umamaheswaram is incomplete. It is atop the hill properly covered by huge trees. Hill ranges shields the temple and 500 metres of stretch to PapaNasanam. Through the day hardly any sunlight falls on this stretch, thus maintaining the temperature below normal year round. It is popularly known as Poor Man’s Ooti.

Papanasanam:

Papanasanam is around 200 meters away from the sanctum sanctorum, where water comes out underneath the huge rocks at the same rate all through the year. There is a rock-pot there that gets filled with water for every five minutes and overflows to water jasmine and other plants below.

Umamaheswara swamy temple is situated on very tall hills of Nallamala forests and datesback to 2nd century AD. Uma Maheshwara Temple temple was built during the reign of Maurya Chandragupta contains a grand image of Errana, adored in literature.

Umamaheswara swamy temple is also known as the North Entrance to Srisailam (Jyotirlingam). The presiding deities in Umamaheshwaram are Mallikarjuna (Shiva) and Bhramaramba (Devi). The Shivalinga is a surprise for the devotees because of its colour - it iswhite on one side and red on the other side. There is an enormous tank where a thousand elephants can swim at the same time. It contains the images of Chandi, Subrahmanya, Virabhadra, Kumaraswamy and other gods.

Importance of Temple:

Lord Umamaheswara swamy is a swayabhu lingam. Lord Srirama visited this place when doing Parikrama to Srisaila parvatam. This place is also described as Kubera sthanam.

Goddess Uma devi present in left side of Lord Shiva. Mahishamardini idol present in right side of Lord Shiva. Lord Ganesh and Lord Ayyappa also present in the main temple.

Temples of Lord Veerabhadra swamy and Lord Janardhanaswamy also present in the way to Papavinasanam. Nagaraju idol also present in the way to papavinasanam.

Papavinasanam is a continuous water flow coming from hill rocks. There is a small pit where coming water stored which makes us easy to take the holy water with mugs. we can do a holy bath in this sacred place.

Nearby Locations:

In the nearby village Rangapur is the famous Darga - Niranjanshalvali where every January 17 night you have huge processions taken in which lakhs of people participate.
50 km from here, en route to Srisailam is the Mallela Thirtham which houses Lord Shiva. The waterfalls are a big attraction. To reach here you have to take a diversion from VatavarlaPalli.
80 km from here is Maddimadugu, one more famous temple of Lord Anjaneya which receives thousands of devotees every Saturday and Sunday.

How to reach :

1.Uma Maheswaram is very nearer(10-12 km) to Achampet, Mahaboobnagar district. We have to go Achampet first, then Rangapur and from there Umamaheswaram. Autos will be avaailable from Achampet or from Rangapur.

2. Uma Maheswaram is also nearer to Munnanur(15 km). When we are coming from Srisailam, we have to get down at Munnanur from there pick a auto to reach Uma Maheswaram.

3. Uma Maheswaram present on hill, there is no village near temple. But Rooms are available to stay for families. If any body go singly, he had to stay in Temple hall.

The Undavalli caves, in the village of Undavalli, are at a distance of and nearly The high hill overlooking the Krishna river hosts fine specimens of rock cut architectural of the Buddhists.

The Undavalli Caves an example of Indian rock-cut architecture and a finest testimonial of ancient vishwakarma sthapathis, are located in the village of Undavalli in Tadepalle Mandal in Guntur District, near the southern bank of theKrishna River, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The caves are located 6 km south west from Vijayawada, 22 km north east of Guntur City and about 280 km from Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.

History:

Caves are associated with Vishnukundina kings - influential dynasty ruling over significant part of contemporary India in 420 - 620 AD. Caves were dedicated by local governor Madhava Reddy to the Anantapadmanabha Swamy and Narisimha Swamy temples.

First Vishnukundina kings were supporters of Buddhism and Undavalli Caves were started as Buddhist temples. For a while they were used by Buddhist monks and there have been preserved some Buddhist statues up to this day.

Later though caves were taken over by Hindus and major part of artwork we see here today is related to Hindu religion.

There is exciting legend about the cave - it tells that here starts 9 kilometres long underground passage leading to the sacred Mangalgiri mountain. Many locals believe in its existence and consider that the entrances have been closed and hidden by authorities to avoid accidents.

There are several smaller rock-cut chambers nearby but the main attention is given to the large four storied cave. From the distance it resembles an abandoned fort but when approaching it there reveals an exciting sight - whole enormous structure is cut in monolithic sandstone cliff.

Caves have four stories, each successive floor recedes. Facade is 29 m wide. Cave in its planning belongs to the earliest examples of Gupta architecture although several details in the second floor show the influence of Chalukyan architecture.

First floor can be entered through one of 8 - 9 roughly shaped openings with massive square columns in between. Planning and style of sculptures in the first floor shows that this was Buddhist monastery - vihara. Part of chambers are primitive rock-cut monastery cells. Hall is not completed, it contains 8 columns. Here are three separate sanctuaries for Trimurti - Brahma, Vishnu and Shivu, each with a pillared hall in front. Trimurti is important concept in Hindu religion - a triad of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, embodyment of cosmic functions of creation, maintenance and destruction.

Walls in the first floor are adorned with frescoes showing scenes from mythological stories and made in 7 - 8th c. AD, some paintings here have been done also in later time periods.

Second floor contains the most amazing sculpture in this temple - a huge, 5 m long statue of Lord Vishnu in his Padmanabha aspect shown in reclining posture. Also this statue resembles similar Buddha statues in some other cave temples. Sculpture is made out of single block of granite. Over Vishnu there is a canopy of multi-hooded Adi-Shesha, king of all nagas, shrine is adorned with numerous other sculptures as well.

Facade of the third floor is adorned with numerous sculptures, including depictions of lions and elephants. There opens beautiful view through these ancient sculptures towards other green hills and stands of palms below.

VALLABHAPURAM

Vallabhapuram is a shrine of Lord Sri Pada Sri Vallabha, and is located in Andhra Pradesh, India. This temple was built and organised by Guru Sri Vittalananda Saraswathi Maharaj (also known as Sri Vital Baba Ji), and he runs the ashram. There are temples relevant to the gods "Dattatreya Swamy", "Kala Bhairava" and "Gayatri Mata".

The shrine is on the bank of the Krishna River, close to the border of Andhra Pradesh. On the opposite bank of the river lies Kurvapur, a place in Karnataka state where Lord Sri Pada Sri Vallabha used to meditate under a banyan tree.

Sri Vallabha is the first and foremost incarnation (avatar) of jagad guru Sri Dattatreya. This took place in 1320 AD at Srikshetra Pthapuram. Sri Vallabha is most powerful and capable in destroying the difficulties, losses, miseries and obstacles occurring in the developments of his dedicated devotees. The aim of Sripada Srivallabha's incarnation is to bless maha siddhas, maha yogis and to uplift dharma through them in the universe.

Sri Vallabha was born in the early hours of Ganesh Chathurdhi in 'Chitra' star, in Simha (Leo) Lagna and Tula (Libra) raasi. As an incarnation of Sree Datta, his feet were marked with all auspicious features, and he bears a worthy name as Sri Vallabha. It was further noted that his horoscope should not be given to anyone and that it will reach in course of time through Akshya Kumar of Tripura belonging to Jainism. All that would happen according to divine plan and it would reach Pithapuram as a part of divine play. When Sri Vallabha was born, a cobra with three hoods was holding its hoods as an umbrella wherever he was kept for eighteen days.

Sri Pada Sri Vallabha came out of the mother's womb as a dazzling illumination (Jyothi). Sow Sumati Maharani fainted immediately after he was born. Auspicious musical notes from musical instruments were heard from the labour room. After some time an invisible voice (aakasha vani)warned all people to leave the room. Four vedas, eighteen puraanas, great persons arrived in the shape of brilliant lights to Great Sreepada. Sacred vedic mantras were heard outside the room. Silence spread after some time.Sreepada Sree vallabha the first dattavataar or incarnation of sri dattaguru was now born in pithapuram and would save the world with his shakti sri Anagha Laxmi.

In Vallabhapuram we can see Dattatreya ,RenukaMata, Saibaba, Anagamata Temples. Coming to Dattatreya temple the people will say that if you have any kind of wish then if you can do 108 rounds for the datta temple and pray with great emotion then definitely your wish will come true. Here from 1999 Guruji Sri Sri Sri Swami Vithalananda Saraswathi Maharaj has been living and developing the Ashramam.

Here they will ( do Annadanam ) Provide free Food for all people who ever come to visit those temples, and Guruji will give his blessings to the people. They will celebrate all festivals like Dattajayanti, Gurupournima, MahaShivaratri, Etc. The other side of the vallabhapuram their is other place called Kuruvapuram in between these two places their is a river called Krishna.

Lord Dattatreya Used to visit this place daily while walking from krishna river. Now the Ashramam has been developing by guruji vital babji. He has started another ashramam in Hyderabad, Jeedimetla. People who ever interested in visiting the Hyderabad ashramam they can go and have a visit and take the blessings of Lord dattatreya. Hyderabad Ashramam also Guruji usually comes so you can have his darshan and Blessings.

How to Reach

Vallabhapuram is approximately 85 KM from Mahbubnagar (the district head quarters) and approximately 190 KM from Hyderabad (the state capital).

Mahbubnagar can be reached either by road or train from many places in Andhra Pradesh. Travelling to the shrine from Mahbubnagar involves taking the Raichur bus as far as Makthal (about 70 km), then taking the Anukonda bus from Makthal as far as Vallabhapuram (15 km).

Raichur Station is the nearest destination. Visitors should get off the train at Raichur Station and then go to the bus stand, from which they should board a bus to Atmakur. There are only two buses available from Raichur, at 7:30am and at 11am. From Atmakur the journey continues by bullock cart and boat to reach Kuravpur Temple. Important trains coming to Raichur include.

Accommodation is available at Vallabhapuram, and food and beverages are provided by the Vallabhapuram ashram.

VEERABHADRA SWAMY - LEPAKSHI TEMPLE

Veerabhadra temple in Lepakshi is located near Anantapur which is 15 km east of Hindupur in the Anantapur district in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southeastern India. Bangalore is the nearest large city.

The temple, a wonderful example of the Vijayanagara Architectural style and art and a master piece of art work done by the Vishwakarma Brahmin stapathis who sculpted this temple. This was built in the 16th century and sits on a mount. The presiding deity is Veerabhadra.

In the exquisite shrine is a wealth of magnificent sculpture in the intricate mandapams. One mandapam has pillars with life-size images of dancers, musicians and other sculptures, created by the artisans of the Vijayanagar empire. The huge granite Nandi bull is carved out of a single stone. The ceilings have breathtakingly beautiful mural paintings.

Temple Architecture:

The temple is situated on a low lying hill called the Kurmasaila to the south of the village and faces the north. There is a short flight of steps from the foot of the hill to the temple. The temple has two enclosures built in cyclopean masonry. There are three entrances to the first enclosure, one in the north, the second in the east and the third in the west. The entrances in the east and west are now closed. the entrance in the north is surmounted by a gopura. …

The northern entrance is the main entrance to the temple. It has a mandapa before it in two sections, one on each side of the passage, covering the adhistana of the gopura. Each section has a pillar in the front with Cola corbels. There is a mandapa similar to the above mentioned one in the rear side of the gopura. The brick superstructure of the gopura is in a dilapidated conditionand there is only one tala containing the kuta, panjara and sala series.

The eastern entrance: The eastern entrance is through a dvara inside a mandapa. There is amandapa before it in two sections, in front of the western entrance section has a pillar with Colacorbels. There is a mandapa in two sections in the inner side of the entrance similar to the above mentioned one. The roof is fallen.

There is a pillared corridor on the four sides along the inner side of the prakara walls of the outer enclosure. The pillars are of a single type, i.e., pillar with one pillaret projecting having the Vijayanagara corbels.

A Mandapa: There is a mandapa facing the north in the south-western corner of the outer enclosure. It has three projections towards the south, east and west with pial in each of the projections. Themandapa contains forty pillars which are of the following types:

(a) Pillar with vyala bracket and Vijayanagara corbels and
(b) Pillar with Cola corbels.

The ceiling of the mandapa contains paintings which are badly damaged due to percolation fo water. The inner enclosure is formed by four walls of stone which have fallen here and there. there are two entrances to this enclosure one in the north and the other in the south.

The northern entrance: The northern entrance is the main entrance and is surmounted by agopura. The adhistana of the gopura is very high and is in two sections. The lower section contains from botton upwards of upana, board patta, gala cut into compartments containing figures of elephants, patta, with scroll decoration, another patta with scroll decoration, padma, gala an ornate moulding decorated with buckled flutes, broad galacontaining short pilasters and kumbhapanjaras and cornice decorated with bead garland decoration and simhalalata gables. (Picture)There are figures of men and women in fine dance poses connecting the padma and the moulding with ribbon cuttings(Picture). The second or upper section contains in order patta, padma, patta, tripattagala, projecting patta with scroll decoration, another gala, padma and alingapattika. The front wall is decorated with three pilasters. Pilaster surmounted by panjara and three pilasters. The back wall is decorated with two pilasters, kumbhapanjara pilaster, salakosta pilaster and kumbhapanjara. The superstructure is of brick and contains a single tala with kuta, panjara, sala with three stucco figures,panjara, kuta, panjara and kuta. The verticals of the dvara have a makara at the base and scroll decoration above. Another vertical of dvara has the figure of a woman standing under a creeper at the base and a vertical row of circles containing the figures of dancers and musicians. Before this gopura are the Dhwajastambha and Balipitha. . ,

The southern entrance: The southern entrance has a mandapa with a passage in the centre. IN each section of the mandapa there are four pillars wit Cola corbels.

A Mandapa: There is a mandapa facing the west in the south-east corner of the second enclosure. The Mandapa is in two sections with a wall containing an entrance, dividing the two, the front section of the mandapa contains four pillars which are decorated with vertical scroll decoration and have the roll corbels. the verticals on either side of the entrance have at the base a dvarapalaka image. The lintel contains the figure of Gajalakshmi. In the back section of the mandapa there are four pillars with Vijayanagara corbels.

Very near the above mentioned mandapa is a big boulder against the east face of which is a richly carved granite base. A flight of steps in the east leads to the base. On the base is a huge serpent with three coils and seven hoods cutout of the rock and in the centre of the third coil is a panavattaand above it a granite linga. The linga is protected by the seven hoods of the serpent. The base is split and the local legend says that the lingam base and all was cut out by a workman of the temple during the rest hour while his mother was getting his meal ready. On arriving with his meal his mother expressed her not unnatural surprise and admiration; whereupon the stone base immediately fell as under due to the evil influence of the unlucky words of praise. On the north face of the boulder is a huge sculpture of Ganapati seated.

Kalyanamandapa: The mandapa is situated in the south-west corner of the second or inner enclosure. It is an open structure, built on a high base which rises to five and a half feet (5½) on the northern side. It contains thirty eight pillars which are of the following types:

a) Pillar with one pillaret projecting

b) Pillar with two pillarets projecting and

c) Pillar with a big deity image carved on a projection of the shaft.

The marriage of Siva and Parvathi has been carved on one of the pillars of thismandapa. Many sages, gods, Dhanvantari and the eight Dikpalakas are shown adorning the pillars as important guests. This mandapa was left unfinished.

The western part of the Kalyanamandapa made up of forty two pillars is called theLATAMANDAPA or HALL OF CREEPERS. To the west of the Kalyanamandapa is a mark on the rock which is said to be the foot print of the goddess Durga.

The Unjal Mandapa:This is situated near the Kalyanamandapa to its east. The adhishtana of thismandapa contains from bottom upwards-upana, patta, padma, broad gala with figures of elephants and cornice containing simhalalata gables. There are four tall pillars having Cola corbels in the four corners of the mandapa supporting the roof. There is a round sikhara above the roof of themandapa.

A small Shrine:There is a small shrine consisting of the garbhagriha and a mandapa before it and oriented to the south in the north west corner of the second enclosure. the mandapa contains four rows (4) of four pillars each with Vijayanagara corbels. The garbhagriha is in a ruined condition.

The Anjaneya Shrine:This shrine is situated a few yards to the south-east of the one described above. It faces the east and consists of the garbhagriha and a small mandapabefore it. The walls are plain and the roof is flat. Themandapa contains two rows of three pillars each. There is astanding image of Anjaneya with hands in anjali inside thegarbhagriha.

The main Shrine:The main shrine of Virabhadra is situated in the center of the second enclosure, faces the north and consists of the grabhagriha and antaralasurrounded by a pradakshina, mukha mandapa, a pillared corridor outside the mukhamandapa and thenatyamandapa. At right angles to the mukhamandapa is the shrine of Vishnu facing the east.

There is a shrine dedicated to shiva under the name of Papavinasesvara facing the Vishnu shrine. To the south of the papavinasesvara shrine is the Sayanagara and to its south is the parvathi shrine both facing the west. In the western wing of the pradakshina surrounding the garbhagriha and antarala of the Virabhadrashrine are three shrines known respectively as the Ramalinga shrine, Bhadrakali shrine and Hanumalinga shrine all facing the east. In the north east corner of the mukhamandapathere is a vedi with the Navagrahas.

The Natyamandapa: The natyamandapa is the finest part of the temple. It is situated immediately behind the north gopura of the second enclosure and measures eighty one feet east-west and forty two feet(42) north-south. It is supported on seventy(70) excellently sculptured pillars, the twelve(12) pillars in the centre forming a court. The columns of the central group bear almost life size representations of the musicians and dancers carvged with much spirit and freedom. The figure ofBhiksatanamurti, Brahma playing the drum, Tumbura thrumming the strings of vina, Nandikesvara playing the hudduka, a devince danseuse Ramba dancing, Bhringi, Chandra and a prominent figure of Nataraja are amongst the noteworthy sculptures adorning the pillars that beautify the central part of this natyamandapa. Other pillars in this mandapa are of the following types -

a) pillar with one pillaret projecting

(b) pillar with two pillarets projecting

(d) pillar with Vyala bracket with rider.

All these pillars have Vijayanagara corbels. The ceiling of the court formed by the twelve (12)central piers has a big lotus with several petals inside a square with the bud hanging in the centre. By far the most remarkable feature of this Natyamandapa is the numerous mural paintings of scenes from the Mahabharata, Ramayana and the puranas with which the ceiling is covered. On some pillars we find figures of women in charming postures.

Behind theNatyamandapa and attached to it by a narrow transverse corridor, and at a higher level is the main part of the temple. A flight of steps from theNatyamandapa leads to the pillared corridor. On the northern side, the corridor contains two rows of seven pillars. The big boulder on the eastern side cuts the east wing of the corridor into two sections. The section to the north of the boulder contains two rows of four pillars and the section to the south contains a row of four pillars(4). The southern wing of the corridor contains a row of fifteen pillars(15). Thecornice which runs on all sides of the corridor has a concave upper portion and a convex lower portion.

The Mukhamandapa: The entrance of the Mukhamandapa is in the north. In the interior, theMukhamandapacontains twenty two pillars(22), which are of the following types -(a) pillar with one pillaret projecting, (b) pillar withVyala bracket, (c) pillar with two Vyala brackets at right angles to one another and (d) pillar with a big sculpture carved on a projection o the shaft. All the pillars have the Vijayanagara corbels. There are some remarkable sculptures on the pillars of this mukhamandapa. Each sculpture is about four feet (4) in height and is in high relief. On a pillar in the north-west corner are the figures of Durga on one side and Kalarimurti on the other side. An imposing figure of Gajasuramurti(Plate21) is found on a pillar in the south-east corner. A pillar in the north-east corner shows fine figures locally known asPadmini Jati Stree(plate22) and a Panchala purusha. Designed as a caryatid, the Padmini Jati Streestands gracefully on a makara, holding the vine of creeper.

The Mukhamandapa contains four pillars in the centre with vijayanagara corbes. The ceiling of themukhamandapa contains paintings of the dasavataras. There is a dvarapalaka on either side of the entrance of the antarala.

The adhistana of the garbhagriha and the antarala of the Virabhadra shrine contains from bottom upwards upana, broad patta, padma, patta, broad patta, gala, tripatta, gala, patta and alingapattika.The walls of the garbhagriha and antarala are plain. The vimana contains two talas with the kuta, panjara, sala, panjara, and kuta series. Above the second tala is a step with nandis in the foru corners. The sikhara is round and belongs to the Vesara order. The garbhagriha houses an imposing image of virabhadra.

The Vishnu shrine: The Visnu shrine faces the east and its entrance is in the west wall of themukhamandapa of the Virabhadra shrine. This shrine is referred to as Ranganatha shrine in an inscription discovered at Chautakuntapalli in the Hindupur taluk of the Anantapur District. dated in Saka 1459(A.D.1537) it refers to the gods Papavinasana, Viresa and Ranganatha at Lepakshi. An inscription on the east wall of the second Prakara in the Lepakshi temple mentions the shrines ofVirabhadra, Papanasesvara and Rama.(22) The Rama shrine mentioned must be Vishnu shrine. At present the sanctum in this shrine houses a standing image of Visnu with a Devi on either side.

The vishnu shrine contains the garbhagriha, antarala and mukhamandapa. The adhishtana of thegarbhagriha and antarala has from bottom upwards - upana, patta, two pattas, tripatta, patta, gala and alingapattika. The walls are plain. The cornice is slightly projecting and contains gables. Above the cornice is a row of makaras. The vimana contains two talas with the series kuta, panjara, sala panjara and kuta in each. There is a steop above the second tala with a lion in each of the four corners. There is a seated figure of Vishnu in each of the four directions in the gala. The sikhara is four sided and contains a simhalalata gable in the centre of each side. Above the sikhara are lotuses and in their centre is the kalasa. This is a dvitala vimana of the nagara order.

The Papavinasesvara shrine: This shrine consists of the garbhagriha and antarala and faces the west. The adhishtana and the walls are plain. The vimana above the garbhagriha has a single talawith the kuta, panjara, sala, panjara and kuta series. There is a phalaka above the tala with a nandiin each of the four corners. The Sihara is round. This is an ekatala vimana of the vesara order. There is a dvarapalaka on either side of the entrance of the antarala. There is a nandi before theantarala. The garbhagriha houses a linga on vedi. On the back wall of the garbhagriha is a sculpture of Siva as Bhiskshatanamurti.

Miniature Shrine: There is a miniature shrine to the right of the entrance of the antarala of the shrine described above. It consists of the garbhagriha whose walls are plain. There is four facedNAgarasikhara on the roof. The shrine houses an image of Ganapathi.

The Sayanagara: This is a dark room to the south of Papavinasesvara shrine. The entrance of theSayanagara is in the east wall of the mukhamandapa of the Virabhadra shrine. The ceilings of the passage in to the Sayanagara and that of the Sayanagara contain paintings.

The Parvathi Shrine: This is situated to the south of the Sayanagara, contains only thegarbhagriha and faces the east. The walls are plain and the roof is flat. The sanctum houses a standing image of Parvathi.

The Ramalinga Shrine: The shrine is situated at the south western corner of the pradakshinawhich surrounds the garbhagriha and antarala of the Virabhadra shrine. The entrance of this shrine is in the south-west corner of the pradakshina wall. The shrine faces the east and has only thegarbhagriha with a linga on a panavatta.

The Badrakali shrine:This shrine is situated immediately to the north of the Ramalinga shrine. The shrine faces the east and contains only the garbhagriha which enshrines an image of Bhadrakali.

The Hanumalinga shrine:This shrine is situated to the north of the Bhadrakali shrine. It faces the east and contains only the garbhagriha whose walls are plain. Above the roof is a four faced Nagara Sikhara. The garbhagriha houses a linga on a panavatta.

Nandi Statues at Temple

The Nandi:The nandi, situated a few furlongs from the temple, is considered to be one of the biggest in India. Massiveness in size, however, ha not been secured at the expenseof artistic beauty. The bull is depictedin the characteristic pose of Nandi. It is noticeable, however, that the head is held aloft at a higher angle than is usual. Consequently, the xpression of submission which is typical of nandi lying befre Siva, is conspicuous by its absence here. From the stand point of the proper prroportion in the formation of the various limbs and the excellent finish secured in the workmanship.The Lepakshi Nandi is a good piece of art of the Vijayanagara period. Like the big Nagalingam, this monolith is said to have been casually carved by a party of workmen in an off hour while waiting for their meals. it is a remarkable piece of work, being about fifteen feet high, some twenty seven in length and finished with great care.

Wargal Saraswati Temple is a Hindu temple of Goddess Saraswati located in Andhra Pradesh, India. The deity of education in Hinduism is goddess Saraswati. There are a few temples devoted to this goddess in the state of Andhra Pradesh (India), one of them being the Saraswati Temple in Wargal, which is less prominent than the Saraswati Mata Temple in Basara.
This temple is maintained by Kanchi Shanker Mutt and there is a Veda Paathashaala where many students learn Vedas. This temple complex was a brain child of Sri Yamavaram Chandrashekhara Sharma scholared follower of goddesses Saraswati.

This temple is located on a hillock near Wargal village. On the same hillock there are temples of various other deities like

Many families visit to the temple for their children's Akshara abyasam (learning ceremony). Meals are provided for free for all the devotees at the temple premises called as Nitya Annadanam. Vasant Panchami celebrations are celebrated every year.

This temple complex was a brain child of Sri Yamavaram Chandrashekhara Sharma scholared follower of goddesses Saraswathi astrologer and a vastu experter. Being a business man he has multi faceted activities to his credit.

In 1998 the building process for the above temple was activated under the group who called themselves as Satya patam seva samethi. This committee has started searching for a convenient place to built a temple.

Ultimately they selected the hillock of Vergal were 400 years old Shambu Deva Temple was situated. This temple is 2 feet below the ground level and one has to pass crawling of the ground for few feets to reach the main Shiva lingam. Sorrounding this temple were two ancient Vaishnaya Temples which were built during or before the Kakatiya rulers. There is a big Victory Pillar made of rock which is around 30 feet in height. The Vicotry Pillar has the statues of SitaRama Lakshmana, Goddesses Lakshmi and entwined couple of snakes.

On Vasantha Panchami of 1989 the Bhoomi pooja was performed and the foundation stone was laid for the temple of Sri Saraswathi Devi. It should be noted on this day they had only Rs. 2700 only.When they started propagating about the process of building Saraswathi Temple of donations poured in as a flood. In this way the construction process continued without any hindrance with the help of Lord Saraswathi.

On 1992 Magashudda Trayodashi Pushpagiri petadipate Sri Sri Sri Vidya Nrusinha Bharati Swamy has laid the foundation to the statues of Goddesses Sri Vidya Saraswathi Devi and Lord Shani statues in a temple. This temple was later dedicated to Kanchi Petam and a Vedic Patashala was started in 1999 by Sri Shankara Vijaya Saraswathi of Kanchi Petam and Lakshmi Ganapathi was inaugarated in 2001. The Expenditure crossed 1 crore of the rupees for building this temple. The temple has 13 and half acres of land on the east side were a park, library, hospital were planned in their future expansion.

Every day 100 of people were given free food to come to visit the temple at a big dining hall in the temple complex. During Dussehra period 1000's of devotees visit the temple every day. The Dussehra temple starts with Vigneshwara Pooja. Maha Abishekam Navaratri Kalasha Sthapana Chathu Sha shatyu pachara pooja, Arathi, Mantha Pushpam, Kukumarchana were performed. Laksha pooja Archana Pustaka Roopini Saraswathi Pooja Ashtothara Shathakalasha Abishekam On the last day of Vijayadarshanam of the goddesses Saraswati is decorated for devotees.

Pooja for Lord Shani Special pooja will be performed on every Shani Trayodashi which comes on the saturday. The poojas for Lord Shani were start on 5 a.m. in the morning which start with Ganapathi pooja and Japam, Homam will be performed with Tarpana to Lord Shani. The Lord Sheni will be worshipped with oil called as Taila Abishekam. The Homam for Lord Sheni will be ended at 12:00 noon with Poornahuthi, Arathi etc.,This is a very big event for this temple which attract 1000's of devotees from all over A.P and other places of India.

Yadagirigutta is a census town in Nalgonda district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

In Tretayugam, there lived a sage by the name of Yadarishi, son of the great sage Rishyasrunga and Santa Devi who did penance inside a cave with the blessings of Anjaneya (Hanuman) on this hill between Bhongir (Bhuvanagiri) and Raigiri (Now in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh, India). Pleased with his deep devotion, Lord Narasimha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu appeared before him in five different forms as Jwala, Yogananda, Gandabherunda, Ugra and Lakshminarasimha. They later manifested themselves into finely sculpted forms that later came to be worshiped as Pancha Narasimha Kshetram.

There are Purana and traditional accounts of this Shrine, which are widely popular among the devotees. There is mention about the origin of this temple in the Skanda Purana, one of the famous 18 puranas

Another Legend also has it that Sriman Narayana, pleased with YadaRushi penance, sent Sri Anjaneya to direct the rishi to a holy spot, where the Lord appeared to him in the form of Sri LakshmiNarasimha. This spot is marked by a temple located at the foot of the Yadagiri hillock, and is located about 500 meters from the present temple. There the sage worshiped the Lord for many years.

After Yadarishi attained moksha, a number of tribals, Knowing of the Lord’s presence, came to worship Him at this temple. But, not being very learned, these devotees began to engage in improper worship. Because of this, Sri LakshmiNarasimha moved into to the hills. The tribals searched for many years to find their Lord, to no avail.

After many years had passed, the Lord appeared in the dream of a devout lady among the tribe, directing her to a large cavern wherein He revealed Himself to all as five majestic Avatars.The Aradhanam and Puja in this temple are performed according to Pancharatra Agamam. The puja vidhanam (Worship procedure) was set by Late Sri Vangeepuram Narasimhacharyulu who composed Yadagiri Suprabhatam, Prapatti, Stotram, Mangalashasanam and served as Sthanacharya of this temple.

After securing blessing for his penance Lord Narasimha had come into existence in Five Avatharas called as Sri Jwala Narasimha, Sri Yogananda Narasimha, Sri Ugra Narasimha, Sri Gandaberunda Narasimha, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha. As such this is known as “Pancha Narasimha Kshetram”. The devotees who worship this deity with devotion, the problems faced by them in regarding their “Graha”, the difficulties through evil spirits and their all mental problems are being cured by the God & Godess. All the difficulties faced by the devotees are being cured through herbal medicines like fruits, flowers and Tulasi Teertham. The devotees who believe the Lord. He is appearing to them in their dreams and conducting operations also.

Yadagirigutta is about 60 km (approx. 38 miles) from Hyderabad and is well connected by Rail and Road.

The nearest airport is Hyderabad. There are number of buses from Hyderabad, Secunderabad and other parts of the state to Yadagirigutta.

The nearest Railway station is Raigiri (about 3 km) where we can catch passenger trains. After alighting at Raigiri, one can take an auto rickshaw or Tanga.

About Temple

Sri Yagantiswamy Umamaheswara temple is one of the few temples patronized by one of the great dynasties of India. Every year Shivarathri is celebrated and a large number of devotees from all over Andhra Pradesh visit this temple. This temple was constructed and completed by the first Vijayanagara Sangama Kings Harihara Bukka rayalu in the 15th century. It was built according to Vaishnavaite tradition.

History of the Temple

Here is the story about Yaganti, that has been mentioned in the book sold at the temple:

While traveling in South India, Sage Agastya came across this place and he wanted to build a temple for Lord Venkateswara. However, the statue that was made could not be installed as the toe nail of the deity got broken. Sage Agastya was upset over this and he performed a penance for Lord Shiva. When Lord Shiva appeared, he asked the Lord the reason why he could not install Lord Venkateswara statue. Lord Shiva replied that the place suits Shiva better as it resembles Kailash. Agastya then requested Lord Shiva to give the darshan devotees along with Parvathi Goddess as Lord Uma Maheswara in a single stone, which Lord Shiva obliged.

Chitteppa, a devotee of Lord Shiva, was worshiping Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva appeared to him as a tiger. Chitteppa understood Lord Shiva's darshan in Tiger form and shouted "Neganti Shivanu ne khanti" (meaning: I saw Shiva I saw)and danced with joy. Gradually it became Yaganti and temple was constructed first by him and later by Vijayanagara rulers. Still there is Chitteppa cave.

Pushkarini

An amazing feature of this temple is its Pushkarini, a small pond of water in the temple premises. Water flows into this Pushkarini from the bottom of hill through the mouth of a Nandi. No one knows how the water reaches this Pushkarini in all the seasons. Devotees consider that a holy bath in Pushkarini is highly beneficial. After taking the bath in Pushkarini, they pay tributes to Lord Shiva.
Saint Agasthya came to this place and took bath in this Pushkarini and worshipped Lord Shiva. The water in this Pushkarini is fresh and sweet, as it comes from the hills.

Yaganti Caves

Agastya Cave

This is the cave where Agastya performed the Penance for Lord Shiva. One can enter the guha by climbing 120 steep steps. Devi Idol is installed and worshiped here.

Venkateswara Cave

The damaged idol of Lord Venkateswara is present in this cave. Compared to Agastya guha it is easy to climb though the steps are steep. According to the story of this Venkateswara idol first lord Venkateswara was present in this cave before Tirupati. But as the idol is damaged near the foot,it could not be worshipped. As per Veera Brahmam Kala Gynanam, whenever in Tirupati people cannot worship god,then this place will stand as an alternative instead of Tirupati. This temple has very beautiful scenic locations around it.

Veera Brahmam Cave

This is the cave, where Vishwakarma Brahmin saint Sree Potuluri Veera Brahmam wrote some of his "Kala Gyaanam" (Prophecy). The height of the cave is less and one needs to bend into half to enter it.

Interesting Facts

Growing Nandi

The devotees believe that the Nandi idol in front of the temple is continuously increasing its size. Its heard from the locals that the idol was initially very smaller than its present size. They say that certain experimentation was carried on this idol and it was said that the type of rock out of which the idol is carved has that growing or enlarging nature associated with it. As per Archaeological Survey of India the rock grows at the rate of 1 inch per 20 years (1 mm per 8 years).

It is said that people used to do Pradakshinas(Rounds) around it in the past. Already the temple staff has removed one pillar as the size of Nandi has increased.
According to Potuluri Veera Brahmam, the Basavanna(stone nandi) of Yaganti will come alive and shout when kaliyuga ends.

Absence of Crows

According to site location and from history here 'crows' do not move near temple premises. Legend has it that while Sage Agastya was performing the penance, crows disturbed him and he cursed that the crows cannot enter the place. As Crow which is the Vahan for Lord Shani, it is believed that Lord Shani cannot enter this place.

How to Reach

Yaganti is located in the Kurnool District in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, located approximately 100 km (60 miles) from the City of Kurnool. Sri Yagantiswamy Temple in Banaganapalle mandal of Kurnool district is a popular lord Shiva temple which is located 13 km (8 miles) West of Banagapalle the mandal headquarters on the Banaganapalle-Peapully road. The other route is via Srisailam, Mahanandi, Nandyal and Banagapalli. The third route from Bangalore is to travel via Anantpur, Tadpatri, Belum Caves, Banagapalli and Yaganti. The approach road is from Gooty to Yaganti. The approx distance from Bangalore is 270 kms and Hyderabad it is 340 Kms on NH 7. Yaganti is located exactly 17 kms from Banagapalli if one approaches from Ananthpur or Srisailam route.

However, Yaganti is well-connected by road rather than by rail. There are regular buses from Kurnool, Banaganapalli, Nandyal and some nearby town. There is a bus facility available from Banaganapalli to Yaganti twice per day, one at 7:00 hours and another at 15:30 hours.The nearest railway station is at Panyam and others are at Nandyal and Kurnool, which is on the Secunderabad-Banglore Railway line.
