3D quilled snowman

This snwoman was quite fun to quill. A lot easier than the dalek, that is for sure! He wouldn’t stand, so I quilled a base for him, which works perfectly. I love his little hat, and his scarf.i braided it by gluing three strips together, close but not right on top one another, and held it by a binder clip. I glued it in the perfect orientation to easily braid and fold it.

I really like Dr. Who, and I thought that a dalek would be quill-able. It was, but it was a bit difficult! I used a bit of wire for its eyestalk since I didn’t think paper would hold up. I put a bit of paper on it and stuck it between some coils. It took me a while to get it to glue.

I made this gnome for my grandma sinc eshe loves gnomes quite a bit! The hair and beard was made similar to how I have in the past, cutting into thirds. But I thought to fold the strips in half this time, and I used a quilling needle and my fingers to curl it.

These are two other pictures I finished earlier this year and last year. The purple one was completely my design. It has sections with two and three layers of coils. It’s a random design, 12” by 12”.

The other one is 8.5” by 11”, quilled over a picture. This one was really difficult, because of all the curves.

Two new quilled picture scenes

I haven’t posted in this blog in absolutely forever. There was a bug on one of my widgets that would automatically forward me to another site, so I couldn’t even use it on my iPad, which is the main device I use. But my husband figured it out for me!

These are two of the pictures I’ve quilled since I’ve updated my blog... I don’t do many small projects, mostly these big ones. I absolutely love these colorful scenes, and plan to do more. The night one is my latest one, which is 11” by 14”, and the other is about 8.5” by 11”.

Each section has a different coil shape, which further distinguishes the areas of the picture, which I quite like.

I quilled these over images I found and printed like I did for my other pictures. I found it is best to look up abstract or abstract painting to find a picture that is good for quilling. Anything that is hd has too much details to be conducive for quilling.

Very abstract quilled 'bird' picture

Hi everyone! I think at this point the people that are seeing my posts (though it's been so long), must be finding my blog randomly through Google or Pinterest. I have issues with posting a lot. A big part of this is because I'm lazy with quilling, and since I'm away at college now, it's kind of hard to get quilling in. I did put in some command hooks though to hold the dowel with the strips I need for my projects! It has worked out awesome. Since I'm in the midst of working on something, it's not hanging up right now, but it's allowed me to keep my strips nice at school! (In other news, I'm turning 21 tomorrow woo! I usually wouldn't say since I'm sure no one cares, but I'm finally going to be a full fledged adult xD).

I like abstract colorful things, so months ago I finally found the perfect picture to base it off! Luckily I have lots of strip colors now but I still had to buy more! I will use them eventually! I think it looks like an abstract bird. I will just let the pictures speak for themselves, and I have one more thing to say a few pictures down.

I wanted to hang up my quilled pictures in my room here. My first abstract tree hung up well with command strips, but while I was home for the weekend, this one fell! (Sorry for the crappy lighting, it's bright as day here, but my room is facing the north so sun doesn't shine in).

The problem is that the hanging up area goes in, and the edges aren't enough to properly hold the command strips! If only I could hang it into the wall. I have no clue how to hang it up, unless maybe instead of two command strips, I put on four.

DIY medicine bobby pin container

Hey everyone! Is anyone else obsessed with Pinterest? I've always been a crafty gal. You probably already know that though! Usually I use quilling as my creative outlet. But looking at Pinterest... There are so many other ideas for things that are useful!

I have a lot of bobby pins. Like, A LOT. I have to put my hair up for work, and I usually use two to put my hair up since my hair is short. Technically it's the summer and it's long right now for ponytails, but the point is I use lots of bobby pins. It's so easy to lose them, right?

Well, when I was cleaning up the cabinet, I thought to put some bobby pins in an old medicine container. It's free and it works. It isn't pretty. So looking on Pinterest got me inspired to morph my container into a cuter holder :). Not sure what else it could be good for, any suggestions?

Objects needed:

-scissors and preferably a razor cutter.

-pencil

-ruler

-scrapbook/printed paper

-doubtless sided tape or photo slits

-old medicine container (preferably the kind you push down on the side instead of the top. You couldn't put anything on top if that was the case, and it's harder to open).

-findings/quilling do-dad

This is pretty straight forward. First you measure how tall the medicine container is. Mine was about seven centimeters. Then mark that length on the paper and cut it nice and straight.

Start putting on the tape or photo slits. I started with just a few slits and started to put it on the container so that I know it's straight. Then keep adding them until you get to the opening part thing jutting out. You just cut down a little bit on each side of the paper between the thing (what is that even called?). Fold it a bit so it's easier to cut, and snip it off. Finish taping the paper on.

Then take off the lid and trace it on your paper. I chose a different paper, but if you put something on it, I guess that isn't necessary.

Cut it out, and Use more tape or photo slits to put it on the top. Mine isn't perfect, but that's not such a big deal.

Now you can be done if you want. It's looking cuter already!

I have an amazing amount of crafty things, so I found a few things to put on the top. You wouldn't want it on its sides since you have to hold onto the side to open it. But not the top. I found some flowers and cord. I have a sticker maker which was a good adhesive for the cord around the top. You probably don't have that, in which case hot glue, done carefully, would probably work as well.

I used more photo slits to adhere the flowers on the top. You could quill something for the top if you'd like. 1/16 inch strips would probably look best (I usually just cut strips in half with precision scissors instead of buying narrow strips). Or maybe you're crafty in some other way. Anything would look cool on the top :).

Half day, half night picture painting

Hey everyone, I know it looks like I've already finished my next quilled picture. That isn't really the case. I finished this a few months ago. I found it when I was looking through my ipad pictures. I took a picture of it before I gave it to my uncle for his birthday (he was practically begging me to quill him something, ha ha! That's why I never took any close-ups.

I seem to be in a tree/ sunset, sky rut. My first one was a sunset tree, then a sunset, half and half, now another tree, half day half night. I guess I have a thing for sunsets and trees, and half and half stuff...

I had fun making the grass at the bottom. Some clearly look like grass, others blend in with the background. The branches are mainly folded strips. And the leaves are a mere inch coils...I wouldn't recommend doing that though, the tree took so so long. My favorite part is the moon. I like how lighter blue than the rest of the top surrounds it :).

Quilling picture tutorial/tips

EDIT: I've been writing up this tutorial for a while, after I finished my 'first' completely quilled picture, that abstract tree sunset one (in picture). So some things I say in here are slightly different from how I've recently tweaked my method. I left most of it as is and added a few things, near the end under tips I will discuss more tips I've recently figured out :).

(Recap) I will be discussing this quilled picture most of the time when I discuss what I've done :).

I know that this looks overwhelming. There are so many coils in this, how on earth could you do it? I won't lie, it took forever. But overall, it wasn't too difficult at all. I have searched for quilling pictures on the internet, and I saw few like this one that could be a painting, that has a full background. I remember two notable exceptions. I would love to see more quilling pictures like this, and I would like to offer a few tips.

While something like this does take forever, if you print out a reasonably easy picture (one with limited tiny details, though some are okay, like the tiny circles on my quilled picture).

How to quill a picture (with separate tips to follow). Some of these steps and hints are meant for beginners, I don't mean to insult anyone's intelligence, I'm just covering all the bases.

1. Find/buy/make a frame. This is an important step, because you want to ensure your picture will be the ideal size. It has to be smaller than what the frame claims to be. Measure how much the sides will cut off, and how big the picture can be to be seen. Maybe cut off a quarter of an inch or centimeter to the visible area on each side to ensure it the right size. I suggest buying a shadow box. You could either buy a regular frame and take off the glass (which I don't prefer since your picture won't be protected), or find some other specialty frame without depth. I haven't found any, but I've read about a few.

2. Find a picture on the internet and print it out. If you're a good drawer, you could even draw something. I would suggest colored pencils or crayons and shade it so you know exactly what strips you need and where each strip goes. It's a good idea to know how you are going to quill it before you start.

-something abstract or uncomplicated is best. Don't pick something with too small of details,

because you need to be able to quill each part. Or, just simplify parts that look too small.

3. Get your strips/order more

You don't want to be too far into your project and realize that you are out of strips in a certain color! With quilling, it's something you have to order and isn't really at a craft store, as experienced quillers know (just some multi colored packs). I suggest using as many different shades of strips as possible. It's what makes it look the most interesting. Is your picture mostly blue or green? Go mad on ordering the most shades of each color as possible. Maybe five shades or something? They aren't that expensive per pack anyway.
-I prefer buying a bunch of single colors instead of shade packs (which is better than multicolor packs, since they have more colors of that particular color), because sometimes there are colors you don't use as often, then you could end up with a bunch of extra color you don't use much. It's worth the extra expense of single color packs for nice storage, and to get the most colors possible. Plus, you get more for your money.

4. Get some cork board and put some some wax paper on the print out on the cork. Get pins, strips, glue, toothpicks (or a glue bottle with a fine tip, which is easiest for me), ruler (you may need scissors, but for 3 mm strips I just rip them personally).

5. Decide on quilled shapes/size.

I used different shapes everywhere to completely fill in each crack, but that isn't totally necessary. Tear drops are good for leaves, long rectangles for trees, maybe ovals for clouds? That's what's cool about quilling, you have an option of shaping each shape which is unique to the craft, giving it a different feeling. I suggest using as small coils as comfortably possible. I used three inches, though some of the circles are only half inch coils. Maybe some detailed coils you could stand making smaller like two inches? The smaller the coils, the better.

6. Start quilling!

***TIPS***

-I highly discourage the use of a slotted tool, at least, the crimp in the middle doesn't always look good. You could use a needle tool, but I never understood them lol.

-instead, run your thumb along a strips a few times and roll with your fingers make the    inside as tiny as possible. The smaller the coil, the more important that is.
-if you have a really small, skinny area on your picture (like the branches on my picture), there are two ways you could do this, depending on how thick it is. First, finish your coils on one side of the small branch/ whatever it is. You can either:
   -set the strip alongside your coils, and mark with your finger where it ends. Start folding it a few times to your desired thickness. Really thin ones I folded twice, the thicker ones three or four times.
   -for slightly thicker areas, you can just loosely roll your coil so there's lots of space. Then, fold your coil. See how big it is compared to how big the area it is your coil needs to fill. Fix the coil as necessary.

**New tips I've developed from my half sunset/half night picture**

My first picture didn't involved much blending. Because of this, I just had to figure out how I wanted to blend some things.

-Some pictures don't need to be blended as much as others. In a sunset, it's quite pertinent to the overall look.
   -It may be obvious by looking at it, but the best way to blend is to buy as much different shades of a color as possible. Unfortunately, it's not possible to blend seamlessly. The best thing to do is start with all of one shade. Then, slowly start to add some coils of the darker/lighter color. Start with just a few here and there, then add more until it's completely in. It's best to add some of slightly different shades even in areas that are supposed to be the same color so that it adds interest and breaks up the single color (like, I added some orange into the red way before I changed the color to a brighter orange/yellow color).
-Sizes of coils:
   -it's best, I think, for most coils to be the same size throughout your picture. This rule can and should be broken sometimes, however. In my picture all coils are three inches, but the tree ones are two inches. I figured it would look better for my tree to have smaller coils since I think it requires more detail. Maybe you want something to stand out on your picture. This is another good time to add in some smaller coils. If there are little 'filler' areas this is another fine time to add in smaller coils. Like some of the tiny coils in between the tree here.

*What to do while you quill?*

    -Pictures like this I really like because it doesn't require as much of your attention as quilling flowers might. Just glue each coil on and pin it. Easy as that! You could even watch netflix or listen to a book tape (I've been listening to book tapes with my half sunset/half night quilled picture. I really enjoy it as my brain is free to listen, while my hands are busy) or something. I went crazy watching lots of dr. Who while making that quilled picture. It's best to have the movie close to you so it's easy to watch and quill. I watched netflix on my tablet, maybe you have a laptop, or you could find a close seat to the tv. Or maybe you want no stimulation at all! Whatever floats your boat.

Abstract half sunset half night picture

Hey everyone! Finally back with another quilled picture. This time I wanted to quill my mom something. It's in a pretty small frame, 6 by 6", so it couldn't be too complicated. We finally agreed on a sunset. It was hard to find the right picture, but luckily I found a good one. I made it abstract as well to go with my style! I had a lot of fun 'blending' with the coils. Luckily I have lots of different shades. Like a freaking crapload. So that was no problem! Each coil is three inches, aside from the coils that make up the tree which are two inches. Three inches is the perfect size for me. Good enough to blend and make it detailed, but not too small.

If anyone has any questions on how to make something like this or anything, don't be afraid to ask. Or maybe you should, maybe I'm secretly a terrorist trying to wreak havoc on your mind by hiding subliminal messages into my quilled pieces.

3D quilled lady rabbit

I made this bunny last year around Easter and since we took out Easter stuff, I found her again. I had lots of fun making her. I wanted to make a cartoon looming rabbit so I did! I had to place her on a grass patch so she would stay up. She is fairly large too, a few inches high. The strips on her are 1/16 inch, but I actually just cut 1/8 strips in half with small, precision scissors. I do have some narrow strips but I decided for how little I use them cutting them in half is fine. The only time it isn't good is if you need them to be cut with precision if you're making a flat picture or something. Or if you're not good cutting that precisely. But if you're a quiller, I think you have to be precise anyway.

Abstract colorful tree sunset picture painting

I found an 8X8 inch frame that I had bought a while ago in my craft closet. I wanted to quill an entire picture this time! I started it about two weeks ago. As I made clear in my abstract man post, I like abstract modern looking things. Modern paintings included. But there are only some modern pieces I even like! Some are just swaths of color and that's just not my thing. I want it to look sort of like something, I don't know! I know you could just say this looks like a tree by a sunset with random colors, but I see much more than that! It's like the tree of life in all of the known universes, like the multiverse, which is the theory that there are an unlimited amount of parallel universes and we live in just one of them. Perhaps it could look like an endless tree growing and sprouting random bubble things and one is our universe? I don't know I'm weird, most of you probably didn't get that xD.

Onto the picture itself... I feel as though the longer I quill, the longer it takes me to complete each one. It should be the opposite, right? No, I'm just getting more OCD about it. The coils are only three inch coils, with a few exceptions with the tree, and the white outline, and the bubbles (some are insanely tiny.. Like half an inch.) Part of the tree are regular coils, some really loose coils, and part just paper folded into half and thirds. I used so much pins it's not funny! Most all of the coils had two pins in them. It took like sixty hours it's insane! But so worth it. I am going to start a new one soon too for my uncle. He has been wanting some big quilled thing from me for a while.

Quilled 'Phoenix' bird picture

Once again, I made this a while ago, though I'm pretty sure I made this after my abstract man. I was looking up what to quill to fit my frame. It's 8x10 inches I think? Something like that. I saw an abstract looking bird, so I thought why not! Then I decided to quill some clouds and a sun for it too.

If you look closely, you can see my ipad in its case in the reflection of the glass. Ha!

I put glued the quills onto light blue card stock and put some bright green around it for just a little something! Most of the coils are six inches, but some May be different, like parts of the coils on the bird. I decided to call it a Phoenix, though it could be anything, because that is what my younger sister kept calling it! I have it hanging in my room, but I had to take it down and snap the pictures by my window because it was so dark where it was hanging. Having a basement bedroom will do that!

3D quilling abstract man

Hi everyone I'm sure everyone has forgotten about little old me already. That's okay because a year sure is a long time! As it says at the top of my blog, I will never quit quilling xD. I have quilled since I last posted but I just haven't posted anything. It's a hassle to take pictures then put them on the computer and then write something about it because I don't know if anyone cares. But people must because this blog has gotten a lot more views. I know I'm often an internet lurker and don't post comments. But of course I do love comments...

Well, a week or so ago, I decided to hunker down and organize my strips because they were such a mess in my droors (I know that isn't a word but I say droors). A complete nightmare, I'm sure many of you feel my pain! Well, I looked up the best way to store strips and I combined an idea with my own. In my craft closet, my dad had some metal hook things and put those into the wall and we bought a dowel rod. Then I clipped each color with a binder clip. I used large ones. Then I bought binder rings so I could easily take them on and off, and I also used a hexagonal punch to write the color and brand of strip and used a small hole punch to attach it with the ring to the dowel rod. It is working really well! I think it looks kind of pretty. It is weighing it down a lot. My dad said he was going to put a third hook in in the middle, but there is no telling when he will get around to doing that! I'm not even done yet, I'm not sure how I will deal with my narrow and wide strips!

I just got the new ipad air a few days ago and that's my biggest motivation to post something... It has a pretty good camera unlike my old ipad 2! Less steps to posting that way. I'm on my ipad a lot, even typing up this post.

So this is one thing I wanted to show you all that I've made. I made this like three months ago, but it's nothing new. As you may know if you've read my about me, I'm pretty young (20 now. I should update and delete parts of my profile I suppose... and update my picture, I was like fifteen in that picture! I'm not one for selfies...) and I do love quilling obviously and quilling flowers, though they are often more colorful than many people quill flowers. I also do like modern looks even though that often seems to be a different genre than quilling stuff.

I was determined to quill an abstract sculpture and this is what I came up with. It's an abstract man. I think it looks like he's cheering.

I decided to use these colors because it matches the color of my room, but I still haven't figured out where I want to put it. I wish the lighting was better, but sadly it's a depressing trying to be spring day. It's finally above freezing here in the tundra of Wisconsin. It was a nightmare winter here. There was a handful of days the highs were in the negatives. In one of my classes, we learned this was a record low December/January/February

3D quilled 'Just Hatched' Easter Chick

I've been quilling over a bunch of plastic eggs for Easter- it's such a fun, easy thing to do! We only have one big one, so we actually found more at Wal Mart last night. 88 cents for like six of them, so if you are thinking of doing the same thing, it isn't expensive at all... I will post the eggs in another post sometime, because I still plan to do more.

If you plan to do something like this, plan to use a lot of paper, even if the egg is on the smaller size. This baby chick is four inches tall. I used a whole bunch of yellow strips! Doesn't it look freaking excited that its out of its shell?

Large 3D bowl of flowers

Hey all, if anyone is left, that is... you all probably thought that I did quit quilling...well, not quite. I haven't been in the mood to really quill in the longest time... My excuse should be that I've been too busy with college, but that isn't really the case.

Now that it's my spring break (yeah, 'spring', spring with snow... everyone around here is really sick of the stuff! We have a little over a foot of snow on the ground. Anyone out there feel my pain?), I wanted to actually do somthing... you see, my spring break is before my friends' that attend different colleges in the same system of Wisconsin schools. Anyway, blah blah. The bowl is the largest I've ever made it- 30 strips! I wanted to make something big so I could make more detailed flowers and so it could be easier to see due to its bigness.

And I wanted to make it a bowl instead of a pot because it could be fatal to try to make a pot so big, because I could easily destroy it, and re-curling thirty strips is rather daunting. For the yellow flower, I cut the fringed middle on the inside on a forty five degree angle, something I surely will do again! I've been quilling some easter eggs too... so I may post a few of those sometime soon!

Hey everyone. It's been MONTHS since I've posted. I haven't quilled in a long while. Well, I just graduated from high school this past weekend, so I got a few cards and some money. I wanted to make a card for my great aunt and uncle that were pretty fortuanate (since I never see them), so I wanted to make them a quilled one.

The flower insides was done using my fringer, then I cut each fringed part two more times. Fringers don't do it fine enough! And like I did for one other card on here, the 'thank you' at the top was printed onto cardstock!

Another 3D Quilled Giant Pot

Hello all! I have made another 3D quilled pot! I made it for my friend Kelsey. She's a great painter, and I'm a great quiller, so I thought we could switch. I'd quill her something, and she'd paint me a picture (specifically one with a panda and her two babies- yes, not quite realistic). And, she wanted one of my quilled pots, specifically of the colors pink, purple, and red. So, I've done that! She's actually a new follower of my blog, the 43rd one, so I can only hope that she isn't seeing this before I show her in person. When I see her again, I want to ask how far she is with the painting! Last we talked it was sketched...

One of my teachers even offered to pay me for two pots for her mother and mother in law for Mother's Day, and I'll get 20 dollars a piece for them, she doesn't even care what colors they are. Unlike a freshmen, I can trust her. That freshmen never gave me any ching, so I never gave my pot to her. I asked her a few times, and she kept on 'forgetting', so I figured she didn't care anymore. It's annoying, but whatcha gonna do?

Also, I just started a blog for my stories if anyone feels like reading it. Right now, I'm writing an anthology collectively called "Life As We Don't Know It", which is about surreal, impossible things happening in various people's lives. If you have some time, maybe you'll decide to read one. My first one is only 2,000 words. It's also linked at the top right of my blog.

Quilled ornaments: a snowflake and 3D star...thing

Hey all! I'm finally back with some new quilling! :)

Yesterday, I really felt like quilling something, so a quilled snowflake that I cold use as an ornament came to mind. As I had no idea where to start, I searched for some quilled snowflakes and printed out my favorite. In no way did I copy it, I just used it as a guide. Here is the result.

After having fun with that, I looked at the ornaments on my tree for inspiration. There was this one 3D star one that got me thinking. So I used 1/16 inch wide strips and came up with this. It had a little gem at the bottom, so I made that and put white quilled rings on every part that needed thread: or fishing line, to be more precise. I glitter-fied it up, because hel-lo, stars are glittery! I used quite a bit of glitter. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

GIANT 3D quilled flower pot

Well, I just was able to finish this pot late last night. I wanted to make a 3D quilled pot since I haven't in such a long time. I noticed in my container full of strips that I had a lot of these really thick strips that I never used, so I used like 19 of them, so this pot is rather big. I actually brought it to school yesterday since there were some classes I know I wasn't doing anything in (like my 'fun classes' since I am now on a four day weekend). Anyway, I had time to do it in a few classes and in one of them a girl liked it so much she offered 15 dollars for it finished, and how could I refuse that? Get money for my hobby? Sure it's not that much considering how long it takes me, but how much should I expect a freshmen to pay? Anyway, to me it just feels like someone is paying me to do something I would do anyway. I wish my job was this fun!

3d quilled Dr. Suess Birthday Bird

Alright, this is the 3D quilling thing I finished a month or so ago, but I have procrastinated on hanging it (it was difficult to do so) which is when I wanted to take a pic of it :P. I decided to make the birthday bird since I already made the Lorax. They're rather fun to make.

This is my medicine cabinet, and eventually I plan to fill it with a bunch of quilled Dr. Suess character's, but for now it's just the BB. I have to bring the Lorax down! You can also see the panda I made a while ago!

I apologize for the lighting as well. This is in my bathroom which has no windows since it's in the basement, and the lights ARE up all the way.

Autumn Wedding Card

Yes, I made a wedding card about 6 months ago...and here I am with another (plus it's been a while since I've posted anything. I'm a busy girl!). I know it's rather off beat that a wedding card is made with fall colors, and it was supposed to be since my cousin is as well! I'm actually typing this right now in my aunt and uncle's house in Colorado in the beautiful mountains.

I thought of this new method for my cards the other days that I used here. I wanted a fancy phrase to put on the card in fancy writing...but out of my millions of stamps I had none that were good enough! So, I asked if I could print some text on a sheet of cardstock, and my dad didn't know, so I tried it and it worked! I will SO be doing that from now on.

I also have this other quilled thing that I made a while ago, and I have to get around to hanging it up and taking a pic of it to post it here.

Hey guys, I'm here with a new card I made! I made it for my grandma since she had MINOR shoulder surgery today.

I wanted to quill a bird, so I looked it up on images so I could quill over it. I found two adorable lovebirds and printed it out. I put the quilling on some old cork (I need new cork-my grandma gave me hers from when she was young). It, like, sheds brown dust..Anyway, I was obsessing over having the quilling stick right in all the right places, so I put on so many straight pins in it...there was more on the yellow bird, but I moved them to the other bird as I quilled.

Also, I did do some similar color schemes from the image, but I also changed up the colors too.

This is the finished version. I figured it needed a little spice, so I cut it diagonally, added a few strips of paper to the edges, and some dots of glitter glue!

Hey everyone, surely you all know who Dr. Suess is? Well, I used to love it as a kid so I decided to quill The Lorax. Isn't he adorable? "I speak for the trees." How can you not love little Lorax for caring?

My sister helped me with the drawing parts, but I cut out the eyes. They're extremely little, but it actually wasn't that bad! Notice the little black hairs at the top of his head?
