Review: Bleuet Pocket Stove w/6 fuel cubes

Are you looking for a very lightweight stove for backpacking? The Bleuet Pocket Stove would be fantastic for backpacking, but as an emergency backup from another stove you may have with you on the trail.

In fact, this little guy weighs in at about 3.25 ounces or 92 grams and fits nicely in a shirt or pant pocket. Not only that but, the construction of the stove is made of galvanized hardened steel. It opens up wide enough to accommodate small or larger pots.

Included with the stove will be 6 solid fuel tablets, which are enclosed, in a waterproof case. They light very easy with a lighter or match and even are useful as a fire starter. Each fuel tablet will last around 15 minutes. In addition, when done with the stove the tablet is gone with no ashes to cleanup.

Of course, the intensity of the flame is not as a great as say a canister or fuel operating camp stove, but efficient enough to boil water for food or drink. The only other con would be that it would leave a residue on your pot after use. Just be prepared to carry something easy to clean that residue off when done so it does not get all over your equipment when packed.

All in all, a great little stove to carry as a backup or emergency use in the back country. The price for this stove runs around $10 dollars or less. Make Plans for Camping in 2012

If you plan to camp this summer at your favorite campgrounds now is the time to plan. To plan now most likely will guarantee your reservations especially if it happens to be a holiday weekend. You may use Reserveamerica.com website to reserve your spot 6 months out from the day you plan to camp at any campground in the United States and Canada. So plan accordingly and guarantee your vacation spot for your family in the near future.

Of course, if you plan to camp at a state park here in Minnesota expect a delay in using their reservation website as it is being revamped and will not be available until March 1, 2012. The new reservation system will provide interactive maps, have trip planning features, show vacancies at a glance, and even provide a reservation call center.

In addition, for winter lodging reservations call directly to the park that you wish to stay. On the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website, they update lodging information weekdays by noon. Just simply call the park to confirm availability for your reservation. Alternatively, the updated information for camper cabins is located in a pdf file on the DNR website. You may want to check this first before calling to make reservations at the park of your choice.

Furthermore, once the new reservation system becomes active March 1, the opportunity to reserve a campsite a year in advance will be available. Even if you did not make prior reservations, about 30% of the parks have spots to camp with first come first serve basis. Camping during the week is a lot easier to secure a campsite, but the weekends could be a lot tougher.

Moreover, you cannot count on that 30% spots being available on a holiday weekend, like July 4, as I found out one summer. At least July 4 falls in the middle of the week this year, but be prepared for a busy weekend on either side of that date.

Lastly, by checking out your favorite state park and planning now will better your chances of securing a spot for camping this summer. Make sure you mark your calendar for March 1 to reserve your summer fun on the new DNR reservation website. See you at the parks!

Camping Gear Simple Maintenance

We have had an exceptional fall run on weather here in Minnesota. So much I was able to extend my camping adventures into the beginning weekends of October. It has been enjoyable to continue something I love and share in the outdoor experiences. You might say I am a fair weather camper and only have equipment for three seasons.

Therefore, with that said, I have cleaned and organized my equipment in storage tubs to rest over the winter months. The tubs will be stored in one place ready to go for a new journey in the spring. My camping stoves, tent, and sleeping bag are the most important pieces of equipment that I spend extra time on for maintenance.

For example, here are some of the things I do in order to store my equipment for the winter months.

Camping Stoves – two burners or single burner depending on the trip I did.

· Clean with mild soap and warm water and thoroughly dry

· Check hose lines where connections are made to fuel sources

· Store your regulator or hose under the grill even in transportation

· Keep your stoves instructions for spare part ordering

· Store in a cool dry place

· I still store in the original box

Tent

· Always after use I inspect for mud or tree sap and remove with water and mild soap

· Air out after each use

· Sweep the tent floor

· Check for wear and tear where tent is staked out and seams

· Silicone the zippers if not zipped with ease

· Store in plastic tubs in a cool dry place

Sleeping Bag

· Air out after each use

· Store in a bigger bag when done for the season as compact form will damage the filling of bag

· Wash if bag was used a lot

· Follow instructions for care and washing

Simple maintenance after each use and proper storage when done for the season will extend the life of your equipment. The camping season maybe over for another year, but not the fun in being in the outdoors doing other things I love.

Spontaneous Road Trip – Camping, Geocaching, and Fall Foliage the goal

First weekend in October, I decided to take a road trip. I wanted to camp and combine geocaching and seeing the fall colors as my goal. Fortunately, my camping equipment recently cleaned and was ready to be stored for the winter, was accessible and packed in the car for a road trip. I wanted to take advantage of the warmer weather we were experiencing this fall and continue my quest for visiting and geocaching all 72 state parks in Minnesota.

After work on Friday, I made my way to Lac Qui Parle State Park, located near Watson, Minnesota. I set up camp and grilled corn on the cob and a brat, on my Stansport grill. Not much later, I did a little hiking before the sun was to set around 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, I completed my officiating duties at a B squad volleyball tournament on Saturday and headed to Sibley State Park, located near New London, Minnesota. Again, I had a very small window to set up camp and grill my evening meal of a pork chop and corn on the cob.

Sunday I packed up the gear and headed towards Charles Lindbergh State Park, near Little Falls, Minnesota. The fall foliage was beautiful as I hiked around looking for the “Wild Life Safari” geocache. I took some photos along the way and headed to the next park.

I am on a mission for the weekend and the goal is to complete five more state parks. Next stop was Crow Wing State Park, located near Brainerd, Minnesota. I grabbed the cache and was on to Cuyuna State Park, near Crosby- Ironton, Minnesota.

The Cuyuna State Park is a huge recreational area that is around 5,000 acres and the DNR office was located in Crosby. This park just opened up mountain bike trails this past spring. Needless to say, while geocaching here I had to be careful not to cross a bike trail. It is now late afternoon, it will be dark soon, and tomorrows another day to hunt for treasure and view fall colors.

I love retirement and my flexibility. It is now Monday, I have two more parks to visit, and then it will be time to head home.

Next stop is Savanna Portage State Park, located near McGregor, Minnesota. This park was definitely worth the trip. Not only did I find the cache, but also the fall foliage was gorgeous. I took photos at two different lakes in this park with the fall colors as a backdrop.

Last stop on my way home was Lake Maria State Park, near Monticello, Minnesota. Nice little park, and the geocache was located near a beautiful lake.

Overall, mission accomplished for a spontaneous trip north to camp, geocache, and view fall colors. I could not have asked for better weather. Of course, the weather here in Minnesota will turn colder soon with blankets of the white stuff to follow. Not to worry I will just have to pull out the snowshoes or cross-country skis and continue my quest. Until then, I will just have to wait for the next road trip.

Minnesota Fall Family Fun

This is the time of year to venture outdoors and take in the fall colors in our great state. There is time to go camping, hiking, geocaching, canoeing, biking, fishing, and visiting state parks.

Our Minnesota State Parks offer various programs year round for families to engage in outdoor fun. If you have not been to the Minnesota Departments of Natural Resource (DNR) website, you are missing out in year round activities that each park may offer. Just click on the link above to take you to the DNR website to create your family outing. Next, click on calendar of events, which will display each parks activity for the weekend. In fact, it displays about three months worth of activities a family could plan their outings of fun.

There are 74 state parks in Minnesota and you are bound to live in proximity of a state park in your own backyard. Here are some of the activities offered this time of year:

· Autumn hikes

· Star gazing

· Geocaching or Scavenger hunts

· Learn about certain animals

· Fall bike rides or ATV rides

· Archery

These are just a few activities from various state parks calendar of events. The one that caught my eye was Fort Snellings, location in the metro –area, activity for the weekend of October 1, 2011. They are offering “Explore Your Parks,” which include guided hikes, canoeing, geocaching, fishing, snacks, and demonstrations. In fact, they are giving away “Explore Your Parks Minnesota” activity guides and a one-day pass to Minnesota State Parks. This would be a great opportunity for a family to visit a state park free.

Furthermore, if your family enjoys activities at state parks then why not purchase an annual pass for $25.00 dollars. Well worth the money, this allows unlimited access to state parks and recreation areas one year from date of purchase.

Lastly, Minnesota is a great place to engage in outdoor activities for families not just in the fall. We have the opportunity to take on many activities in four seasons. Minnesota State Parks in the Fall

Ahh, the changes of seasons in Minnesota are a site to behold. This is the time of year to get out and take in the fall colors. Starting to the north and heading south you can see the changes begin from mid- September to early October. Of course, if you are not sure where to begin your journey may I suggest a visit to Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to get updated information? Not only pertinent information about the fall colors, but they will have a map to show the percentages of changes that have occurred. That way you can plan when and where to go to see mother nature at work in your section of the state. Do not delay because this fabulous spectacle does not last long.

Next, if you travel quite a bit and you want this information while on the road, check out the “Fall Colors Mobile Page.” Here you are able to use the DNR mobile APP to keep abreast of the latest information about fall colors in the state. Reports come out every Thursday by noon, and integrated with Google maps. How cool is that!

Camp Stove Used in Emergency Situation

My camp stove was ready for action on Friday July 1, 2011 when a storm ravaged our town and no power was available for hours. I became a victim of my own advice of using my stove for cooking a meal when it was safe to come out of hiding. Being prepared in emergency situation when Mother Nature throws a curve is wonderful advice. You just never know!

The storm hit with so much wind and hail that trees literally toppled over. This is all due to the amount of moisture we have accumulated from winter snows and recent rains this spring. Our town is in major clean-up mode for weeks to come. This year’s storms have been many and predications from meteorologist say it may be an active summer for Minnesota. With that said I am taking my own advice and keeping my camping stove ready in case more emergencies arise with power outages.

Of course, I own more than one camping stove for certain camping adventures I take. I have a Primus Alte 2 burner stove for the car camping trips with my family, a Primus EtaPower EF for backpacking or Boundary Water trips, and my JACCARD single burner stove for emergency purposes. Anyone of these stoves alone would have been efficient for my needs, but the JACCARD I was able to use indoors in a well-ventilated area to cook my meal. In a matter of ten minutes or less I was ready to eat ramen noodles with a peanut butter sandwich.

The JACCARD stove worked like a charm and I am thankful to know I was able to survive in a power outage. This is a single burner stove that runs on butane. I was able to purchase the butane at my Ace Hardware store in town. It is not an expensive item to have available in time of emergencies. I store all my camping gear in storage bins either piled up in the stairwell closet or out in my shed. It was very accessible in times like this. In addition, I hope I do not have to experience another storm of this magnitude anytime soon, but at least I will be ready!

Furthermore, I noticed they have some wonderful “I Can” workshops in the areas of archery, rock climbing, camping, fishing, and even paddling. The best part is all the gear for activities are provided with instruction with minimal or no cost to you. What are you waiting for what a fantastic time to learn something new without spending money on gear or equipment you may not use if you do not like it?

Also, check to see the age restrictions on the rock climbing at specific state parks and the archery activity. In addition, some of the events need an adult present under a certain age. The other activities are family friendly and there are no age restrictions for camping, fishing, or paddling. There is no experience necessary to engage in the “I Can” programs. What a wonderful time to spend with your family learning something new together.

Lastly, plan accordingly by checking the website for times, dates, and location. The “I Can” camping workshop you need to register a head of time, while the others may just have a starting time mentioned. Best bet is to call the specific parks and get further information and to ask any questions about the program before you venture to the parks.

Camping Adventure in North East Texas

Great Blue Heron - Caddo Lake State Park, TX

The last ten days I completed a camping adventure with a Texas friend to North East Texas. My adventure started in San Antonio, TX with a flight from Minneapolis, MN airport. I arrived on a Tuesday and we organized the camper to leave the next day. Our goal was to hike, bird, canoe, geocaching and just relax.

Meanwhile, our first stop for camping took us to Mission Tejas State Park. This park is located in the Pineywoods Region in east Texas. We arrived late afternoon to the 363-acre park where one can fish in the Neches River, picnic, or hike on the trails. Unfortunately, a storm came through the night before and electricity was unavailable until later that evening. We stayed two nights in this park before moving on.

Next, our travels brought us to Caddo Lake State Park, again in Pineywoods Region. Here we were able to maneuver a canoe through the maze of bayous with the picturesque bald cypress trees. While canoeing we saw a great blue heron up close and personal. In addition, hiking in the area we did some geocaching.

Our next state park visit brought us to the Prairies and Lakes Region located east of Austin and San Antonio. The state park is about a 1460-acre park near beautiful Fairfield Lake. Camping spots located near the shorefront are awesome for bird watching, sunsets, and peaceful reflection. Meanwhile, geocaching led us to many hiking trails that gave us different perspectives of the park.

Lastly, the state park we visited was Pedernales Falls State Park, which is located in the Hill Country Region of Texas. Probably people for recreational activities utilize the most popular parks found in this region. This particular park is over 5000 acres in size with plenty of activities for hiking, birding, and camping, swimming, mountain biking or horseback riding.

Of course, we combined the hiking with geocaching, and the numbers of caches are not lacking in the park itself to entertain the family. After our successful finds in geocaching we headed to the river to cool off. Also, make sure you stop off at the bird blind in the morning hours when the rangers put down the seeds and stock the hanging branches with peanut butter. We were lucky to spot a beautiful male painted bunting one morning.

All in all, a successful trip, that originally we planned for Southwest Texas, but took us to Northeast instead due to the fire outbreaks in that area. Texas has some wonderful state parks to visit, and now I have added a few more to my list. Thanks and hope to see ya’ll real soon.

Spring in Minnesota, when?

A bit of news from the heart of Minnesota, find them in extended winter mode. Winter just seems to hang on with a little teasing now and then of warmer weather ahead. We just cannot seem to shake this weather pattern. I am wishing that we could share this moisture with Texas and their wildfires.

Meanwhile, I am looking forward to warmer weather and a chance to get out and enjoy the great outdoors in Minnesota. I have had my camping gear in storage for the winter and occasionally pull out the bins to take stock of what I have and create a wish list of what I need.

First, I decided to take my Primus North American Gear 2 burner stove and buy an adapter hose that will connect with a bulk tank instead of using a disposable propane cylinder. My thought here was to be more conscious of being green. I was able to purchase the adapter hose at my own community’s hardware store for around $23.00 dollars.

Next, I looked over the connector hoses and o-ring to make sure they did not have wear and tear on them to minimize the danger of using it. I connected the hose up to the stove and bulk propane tank to see if there might be leaks. To my knowledge, none seen and then I cranked up the stove to check the flames ability to burn evenly. I had to clean the burners and restarted the stove again.

Overall, it has been a long winter here, but the time spent now to check my camping gear would make it more efficient when it is time to go camping. Better to be prepared with equipment that functions appropriately then finding out differently when camping. Have a safe and wonderful camping season!

JACCARD Home N’ Away Stove

This portable stove is a single burner stove that runs on butane. I like this stove because it’s wonderful to have on hand for an extra burner at a family gathering or for emergency purposes. It comes with its own carrying case for easy storage or transportation.

Also, you should be able to purchase the butane at your local hardware store for around $4 dollars. The suggested butane fuel for this stove is “Max Burton” butane fuel cartridge. Depending on your use you should be able to use your stove for around 2-2.5 hours of burning time.

The stove itself has a price tag of around $26.00 dollars. It burns at about 9800 BTUs and burns cleaner than propane, which allows for well ventilated indoor use. Moreover, it has a piezo ignition system and advance shutoff system that disengages the canister when not in use. This stove is really easy to use and cleanup is a snap.

Fun Activities in Minnesota Winters

Are you looking for some fun winter activities that you can do with family and friends? Although, it may be very cold in January we begin to look forward to a break in the weather pattern to bring a tad bit warmer weather in February. So, why not take advantage of the great snow and moderating temperatures for some outdoor activities.

For example, we have about 13 downhill ski areas; over 1180 miles of state trails, 500 miles are paved, plus a thousand miles of snowmobile and cross country skiing. Also, available are opportunities to rent alpine ski equipment at the ski hills and cross country skis or snowshoes at the state parks. For a new experience there are camper cabins available during the winter to rent at the state parks.

Furthermore, it is a winter wonderland at this time of year and there are plenty of fun activities that are available to enjoy. All you need to do is create a plan and join the rest of us in engaging in some great winter fun. See you in the snow!

Minnesota State Parks do have camper cabins that can be rented all year, which means you do not need to pitch a tent in the snow. The one-room log cabins are accessorized with bunk beds, table and benches, and a fire place. The cost for the cabin is about $45.00-$50.00 dollars depending on a want for electricity or not. Also, latrines, outdoor fire rings, and picnic tables are nearby.

Of course, you will have to bring your own sleeping bags, cookware, camp stove, lanterns and food just like your other car camping adventures. What a fantastic time to venture in outdoor activities without the bothersome bugs and large camping crowds. The experience will be a whole new adventure for your family. Looking for some snow fun that won’t break the bank? Minnesota State Parks offer snowshoe hiking activities during the winter months. In fact, some of the hikes may include candle hikes, moonlight walks, or even global positioning system (GPS) hikes.

Just visit http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/ for more specific information on the parks that participate in these types of programs. The cost of snowshoe rental is $6.00 dollars a day. The only other expense would entail your travels to the park for gas and a $5.00 day pass to enter the park.

Although, you may not use the cross country ski trails to hike on it is great fun to use the snowshoes to venture off the beaten paths. Also, you should call or check the DNR website for updates on programs or cancelations due to extreme weather or poor snow conditions.

In other words, as our state theme says, “Explore Minnesota” it is just another wonderful season to enjoy.
