Three Ways Millennials Can Start Saving More Money

For too long, Millennials have gotten a bad rap about money and their ability to save for a rainy day or retirement.

However, a new “Relationship With Money” survey by financial services firm Edward Jones found that not only do more Americans born between 1981 and 1996 consider themselves “savers” than those in their parents’ Gen-X cohort (48 percent vs. 46 percent), but that Millennials also were better at socking away emergency funds (75 percent vs. 66 percent).

That’s right. The same Millennials whose motto could be “Why buy a car when you can Uber?”

“This debunks the myth that Millennials aren’t as financially focused as other generations,” says Edward Jones investment strategist Nela Richardson.

And the survey isn’t some outlier. It’s supported by other research.

The Federal Reserve Survey on Consumer Finances found that while Millennials are deep in debt, more than 42 percent have retirement accounts, the highest share for those under 35 years of age since 2001.

Part of what’s driving Millennials’ emphasis on saving could stem from lingering memories of the Great Recession.

“Back in the late 2000’s, the oldest cohort of millennials entered the worst job market since the Great Depression of the 1930’s,” says Richardson.

“For younger millennials, watching their parents and other family members go through that experience may have also made them more aware of the risks of a market downturn or some other unexpected event, such as losing a home or a job, and so they’re more conservative when it comes to spending and saving in their adult lives,” says Richardson.

One potential alarm bell uncovered by Edward Jones’ sampling of more than 2,000 adults nationally age 18 and over: While 92 percent were honest enough with themselves to recognize there was room for improvement in their financial health, the very thought of saving money sufficed to make more than a third feel either “anxious” or “overwhelmed.”

If that sounds familiar, here are three steps to consider:

• Identify your money-related emotions. People often have emotional responses to money. Getting a big bonus at work can make you feel euphoric; agonizing over what to do with it can be paralyzing even as the logical part of your brain (invest at least most of it) fights it out with the emotional part (splurge it all!). What’s key is knowing that letting your feelings dictate your spending, saving and investing choices can lead to poor decisions.

“The standard recommendations are for children to get six to eight glasses of water per day,” says Dr. Melina Jampolis, CNNHealth’s Diet and Fitness expert. “Mild dehydration can affect learning as well as mental and physical performance.”

Mayor urges increased ‘social distancing’ efforts in coming week

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Mayor Bill de Blasio urged New Yorkers on Monday to increase their efforts to “socially distance” themselves in the next week, warning of possible further measures restricting human interaction.

New York City has become the epicenter of the American coronavirus outbreak, and its residents, particularly its young people, have repeatedly been the targets of criticism for not heeding orders to be isolated.

Multiple reports have highlighted group gatherings across the city, including a Sunday wedding on Staten Island, showing people flouting government orders to limit gatherings and maintain at least six feet of separation.

“We’re New Yorkers,'' de Blasio said. "We’re used to crowds. We’re used to lines. We’re used to being close together. Not anymore. We are not going allow crowds to form.”

City agencies will increase efforts to ensure New Yorkers are practicing social distancing this week, according to de Blasio. Signage will also be posted to help people better understand the best practices and benefits of social distancing.

He said the increased efforts will begin focusing on city parks and other places where people congregate. The efforts will be conducted in partnership with the NYPD, Parks Department and other city agencies.

“If we see people in groups, we’re gonna break them up,'' the mayor said. "If we see a place that’s too crowded, we’re gonna get people to disperse. We want to see how this is going...If we don’t think it can be done, we’re going to have to come up with tougher rules.”

No large gatherings or team sports will be allowed in city parks. Barbecues are also prohibited for the duration of the coronavirus crisis.

The mayor dialed back his criticism of the Trump administration, saying he had a conversation with the president and Vice President Mike Pence that went well.

He said the administration committed to sending 400 ventilators to the city from the federal government’s stockpile. He also said the administration is sending a stockpile of protective equipment for the city’s medical professionals.

Both Gov. Andrew Cuomo and de Blasio have sounded the alarm on supplies and called for market intervention from the federal government for things like masks, gloves, and, particularly, ventilators.

Democrats, including members of the party’s congressional delegation, have called on the president to use the powers granted by the federal Defense Production Act to mandate private industry to shift its production focus to what the nation needs to fight the virus.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- As coronavirus (COVID-19) related deaths surged to at least 12 on Staten Island, the borough also became the most affected in the city per 100,000 residents.

Based on positive tests, which officials have stressed does not necessarily reflect the full spread of the virus, coronavirus is affecting 174.3 of every 100,000 Staten Islanders, based on 2010 Census data and the latest figures from the city’s Health Department.

There are 817 confirmed cases on the borough, according to city data posted at 9:35 a.m.

Queens and Manhattan, both of which have populations of 2,230,578 and 1,586,360 respectively, are behind the borough in rate of positive tests but are nearly identical in rate when adjusted for population.

Coronavirus is affecting 162.3 of every 100,000 Queens residents and 162.1 Manhattanites, the data shows.

There is a steep drop-off to the next-closest affected borough — Brooklyn — at 139.5 positive patients per 100,000 residents.

The Bronx, the borough with the lowest rate of confirmed coronavirus cases, is standing at a rate of 132 positive patients per 100,000 residents, though the rate of infections in every borough is almost surely to rise, as Gov. Andrew Cuomo has repeatedly said: “The more you test, the more positives you will find.”

In terms of confirmed cases, Queens has 3,621, Brooklyn has 3,494, Manhattan has 2,572 and the Bronx has 1,829.

Moving forward, however, who the tests are administered to is likely to change for commercial labs. Vice President Mike Pence said on Sunday the country will be “caught up” on a backlog of tests by the middle of next week, but added that the Trump administration is “directing commercial labs to prioritize people who are in the hospital for coronavirus tests" in the effort “to get the results of that as quickly as possible for every American.”

The shift in test procedures to the most affected residents could shift the rate at which the amount of confirmed cases increase, but there is currently no indication that the state-run drive-through testing on Staten Island has slowed thus far.

HOSPITAL CAPACITY COULD BE STRAINED

Despite accounting for only 7% of citywide cases as of Monday morning, the high rate of coronavirus tests could put pressure on the Staten Island’s hospital systems. There are currently a total of 101 in-patients being treated at borough hospitals in coronavirus cases, the Advance/SILive.com reported.

While holding 7% of the New York City’s positive cases, according to the most recent data on Monday, the borough accounts for only 5.7% of the city’s population.

Cuomo continued his push to increase the state’s hospital capacity on Monday, mandating that all New York hospitals up their number of beds by 50% as the system prepares to deal with the worst of the coronavirus outbreak, the Advance/SILive.com reported.

Staffs at Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) and Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) previously told the Advance/SILive.com that they are aiming to maximize their capacity well ahead of the potential surge in hospitalizations, increasing room by utilizing medical tents and optimizing existing hospital space.

“We are planning for the worst-case scenario,” said Alex Lutz, a RUMC spokesman. “We are looking at our capacity within the structure of the hospital itself and not leaving any stone unturned.”

Both Staten Island University Hospital campuses have a plan to deploy medical tents if the situation requires them to do so, spokesman Christian Preston said. A medical tent was recently placed outside of RUMC with another tent possibly used for a location off the hospital’s campus.
