Forbes baru saja meluncurkan daftar perusahaan terbuka yang paling besar di dunia. Daftar perusahaan tersebut dinamakan Forbes Global 2000.

Di Indonesia, Bank Rakyat Indonesia berhasil menjadi yang terbaik. Menurut catatan Forbes, nilai kapitalisasi pasar BRI mencapai 18,37 miliar dollar AS per April 2012. Penjualan BRI pun tercatat 5,93 miliar dollar AS. Kini bank yang dinahkodai oleh Sofyan Basir telah mempunyai sekitar 40 ribu karyawan.

Dengan sejumlah catatan tersebut, BRI pun menempati rangking ke-479 dalam daftar Global 2000. Dalam hal laba, bank yang punya cabang hingga kepulauan Cayman ini punya peringkat yang lebih baik yakni ke-372, yang nilainya mencapai 1,7 miliar dollar AS. Asetnya pun mencapai 51,5 miliar dollar AS.

Perusahaan terbuka terbaik kedua di Indonesia adalah Bank Mandiri. Penjualan bank BUMN ini tercatat mencapai 6 miliar dollar AS. Sekalipun memiliki angka penjualan di atas BRI, namun dalam laba Mandiri hanya mencapai 1,3 miliar dollar AS. Aset bank yang sekarang dipimpin oleh Zulkifli Zaini ini tercatat sebesar 60,4 miliar dollar AS. Nilai kapitalisasi pasar Mandiri pun mencapai 17,6 miliar dollar AS. Semua catatan keuangan tersebut membawa Mandiri menempati peringkat ke-488 dalam Global 2000.

Sementara Bank Central Asia Bank menempati peringkat ketiga yakni. Penjualan BCA tercatat sebesar 3,1 miliar dollar AS dengan laba 0,9 miliar dollar AS. Kini aset BCA ditaksir Forbes mencapai 35,9 miliar dollar AS. Dan, nilai kapitalisasi pasar mencapai 21,1 miliar dollar AS. Dalam Global 2000, BCA yang kini mempunyai sekitar 19.600 karyawan berada di peringkat ke-700.

From Friday this week a three-tonne satellite is set to fall to Earth, the German Aerospace Agency DLR warned today.
The ROSAT satellite will re-enter between October 21st and 24th, scientists predict, and could strike anywhere on Earth between 53 degrees north and 53 degrees south - an area stretching from as far north as the UK to as far south as the Falkland Islands.

The agency calculates that there is a 1 in 2000 chance it will hit someone. Fragments - including pieces of a heat-resistant mirror weighing 880lb - could hit anywhere within an 50 mile-wide path along the satellite's track.
'ROSAT has no propulsion system on board that could be used to alter its orbit or re-entry trajectory; this means that the re-entry of ROSAT cannot be controlled,' said the German space agency, DLR in a statement this week.
'The time and location of re-entry cannot be predicted precisely. Currently, the re-entry date can only be calculated to within plus/minus two days.
'This time slot of uncertainty will be reduced as the date of re-entry approaches. However, even one day before re-entry, the estimate will only be accurate to within plus/minus five hours.'
'All areas under the orbit of ROSAT, which extends to 53 degrees northern and southern latitude could be affected by its re-entry.'
The German Aerospace Center has warned that 30 'individual pieces weighing a total of 1.6 tons may reach the surface of the Earth'.
ROSAT’s heat-resistant mirror in particular may not burn up upon re-entry and falling debris may include razor-sharp shards. However Professor Heiner Klinkrad of the European Space Agency assured: 'Until now in the more than 50-years of space history not a single person has been harmed [by pieces of falling satellites].'
ROSAT was launched on June 1, 1990, from U.S. launch site Cape Canaveral for what was originally intended as an 18-month mission.
It actually operated for more than eight years, finally shutting down on February 12, 1999. It is now expected to hit the Earth at some point between now and December.
Odds are long of anyone being hurt, but emergency services in Germany are practicing drills to deal with debris injuries just in case - although there is no evidence that it will land there as opposed to anywhere else.
Last month the German space agency estimated that ROSAT has a 1-in-2000 chance of hitting someone - higher than the 1-in-3,200 odds Nasa gave for UARS, the last satellite to fall to Earth. But any one individual's odds of being struck are 1-in-14trillion.
It's impossible to predict more accurately because of the sun's effects on our atmosphere. 'Solar radiation heats up the Earth’s atmosphere and therefore increases the atmospheric drag,' said DLR this week.
ROSAT, a German X-ray telescope built with British and American technology, has been orbiting the Earth since 1990 and has provided invaluable data on stars. But they lost contact with it in 1999. It is now predicted to re-enter Earth's atmosphere at the end of this month.
Heiner Klinkrad, head of the Space Debris Office at the European Space Agency, said in a webcast this month: 'It is not possible to accurately predict ROSAT's re-entry.
'The uncertainty will decrease as the moment of re-entry approaches.
'It will not be possible to make any kind of reliable forecast about where the satellite will actually come down until about one or two hours before the fact.'
Last month, Nasa's six-ton, bus-sized Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite made its final fiery plunge into the Earth's atmosphere. Americans had been warned that the 20-year-old orbiter could cause injuries and damage to property as it dropped about two dozen pieces of debris on to Earth weighting up to 300lbs.
The satellite was far smaller than the 135-ton Russian space station Mir, which fell to Earth in 2001 or the 100-ton Skylab that fell in 1979. So far this year, two large Russian rocket stages have also fallen to earth without inflicting any injury.
Mir fell into the South Pacific, while Skylab hit the Indian Ocean and parts of sparsely populated western Australia. Because two-thirds of the Earth is ocean, space debris usually hits water. Nasa urged anyone who finds a piece of the UARS satellite not to touch it.(source by kompas.com)

Behind the flamboyance and showmanship, associates say Gadhafi was meticulous in managing the levers of power. He intervened in decisions large and small and constantly met personally with tribal leaders and military officers whose support he maintained through lucrative posts.

The sole constant was his grip on the country. Numerous coup and assassination attempts against him over the years mostly ended with public executions of the plotters, hanged in city squares.

The ultimate secret of his longevity lay in the vast oil reserves under his North African desert nation and in his capacity for drastic changes of course when necessary.

The most spectacular U-turn came in late 2003. After years of denial, Libya acknowledged responsibility — though in a Gadhafi-esque twist of logic, not guilt — for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, that killed 270 people. He agreed to pay up to $10 million to relatives of each victim.

He also announced that Libya would dismantle its nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs under international supervision. The rewards came fast. Within months, the U.S. lifted economic sanctions and resumed diplomatic ties. The European Union hosted Gadhafi in Brussels.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2008 became the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit the country in more than 50 years. Rice had a special place in the heart for Gadhafi, who in an interview once called her "my darling black African woman ... I love her very much ... Leezza, Leezza, Leezza." After Swiss police had the temerity to briefly arrest his son Hannibal for allegedly beating up two servants in a Geneva luxury hotel in 2008, Gadhafi's regime arrested two Swiss nationals and raked Switzerland over the coals, extracting an apology and compensation before finally releasing the men nearly two years later. European countries, eagerly building economic ties with Libya, did little to back up Switzerland in the dispute.

But Gadhafi became an instant pariah once more when he began a brutal crackdown on the February uprising in his country that grew out of the "Arab Spring" of popular revolts across the region. The U.N. authorized a no-fly zone for Libya in March, and NATO launched a campaign of airstrikes against his military forces.

"I am a fighter, a revolutionary from tents. ... I will die as a martyr at the end," he proclaimed in one of his last televised speeches during the uprising, pounding the lectern near a sculpture of a golden fist crushing a U.S. warplane.

Gadhafi was born in 1942 in the central Libyan desert near Sirte, the son of a Bedouin father who was once jailed for opposing Libya's Italian colonialists. The young Gadhafi seemed to inherit that rebellious nature, being expelled from high school for leading a demonstration, and disciplined while in the army for organizing revolutionary cells.

In 1969, as a mere 27-year-old captain, he emerged as leader of a group of officers who overthrew the monarchy of King Idris. A handsome, dashing figure in uniform and sunglasses, Gadhafi took undisputed power and became a symbol of anti-Western defiance in a Third World recently liberated from its European colonial rulers.

During the 1970s, Gadhafi proceeded to transform the nation. A U.S. air base was closed. Some 20,000 Italians were expelled in retaliation for the 1911-41 occupation. Businesses were nationalized.

In 1975 he published the "Green Book," his political manifesto that laid out what he called the "Third International Theory" of government and society. He declared Libya to be a "Jamahiriya" — an Arabic neologism he created meaning roughly "republic of the masses."

Everyone rules, it declared, calling representative democracy a form of tyranny, and Libyans were organized into "people's committees" that went all the way up to a "People's Congress," a sort of parliament. In the end, rule by all meant rule by none except Gadhafi, who elevated himself to colonel and declared himself "Brother Leader."

"He aspired to create an ideal state," said North African analyst Saad Djebbar of Cambridge University. "He ended up without any components of a normal state. The 'people's power' was the most useless system in the world."

In the 1970s and 1980s, Gadhafi supported groups deemed by the West to be terrorists — from the Irish Republican Army through various radical Palestinian units to militant groups in the Philippines. He embarked on a series of military adventures in Africa, invading Chad in 1980-89, and supplying arms, training and finance to rebels in Liberia, Uganda and Burkina Faso.

A 1984 incident at the Libyan Embassy in London entrenched his regime's image as a lawless one. A gunman inside the embassy opened fire on a demonstration by Gadhafi opponents outside, killing a British policewoman.

The heat was rising, meanwhile, between the Reagan administration and Gadhafi over terrorism. In 1986, Libya was found responsible for a bombing at a Berlin discotheque frequented by U.S. troops in which three people died. America struck back by sending warplanes to bomb Libya. About 40 Libyans died.

The Lockerbie bombing followed in 1988, followed a year later by a bombing that downed a French airliner over the West African nation of Niger. The West was outraged, and years of sanctions followed.

Libya's road back from pariah status began in 1999, when Gadhafi's government handed over two Libyans for trial in the Lockerbie bombing. In 2001, a Scottish court convicted one, an intelligence agent, and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The other was acquitted.

In 2002, Gadhafi looked back on his actions and told a crowd of Libyans in the southern city of Sabha: "In the old days, they called us a rogue state. They were right in accusing us of that. In the old days, we had a revolutionary behavior."

Throughout his rule, he was a showman who would stop at nothing to make his point.

His appearances at Arab League summits were an annual cause of cringing among fellow Arab rulers. At one, he argued vehemently with Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, winning the monarch's eternal hatred. At another, Gadhafi smoked cigars on the conference hall floor during speeches to show his contempt.

In a 2009 address at the United Nations, he rambled on about jet lag, then tore up a copy of the U.N. charter, saying the Security Council "should be called the terrorism council."

On state trips, he would insist on setting up a tent to stay in. He sported a personal escort of female guards — which he once explained by saying: "There are no men in the Arab world."

A 2009 U.S. diplomatic cable released by the website WikiLeaks spoke of Gadhafi's intense dislike of staying on upper floors of buildings, aversion to flying over water, and taste for horse racing and flamenco dancing.

The Dutch Oils and Fats sector believes that abolishing the EU import duty on sustainable palm oil will serve to offset most of the additional costs to produce sustainable palm oil and will help to remove a significant barrier to its market uptake in Europe.

The MVO’s proposal requests that the EU levy on RSPO’s CSPO imported from Malaysia and Indonesia for use in consumer goods be abolished. Currently, crude palm oil for use in non-food products and palm oil originating from nearly all other producing countries are exempted from import duties.

Darrel Webber, RSPO Secretary General, commented: “The Dutch industry initiative once again places the Netherlands, the largest palm oil importer and processor in Europe, at the forefront of spearheading market transformation towards sustainable palm oil. The RSPO commends and supports the MVO’s resolution aimed at stimulating demand for sustainable palm oil.”

“Since the beginning of the certification process in 2008, we have witnessed increased accountability on the part of our sustainably operating palm oil producers. This has resulted in CSPO now boasting close to 5 million metric tonnes, equal to 10% of global palm oil production – an exceptional accomplishment for a commodity with such a highly complex supply chain as palm oil.

“RSPO has achieved this important result thanks to the commitment of its member companies. They understand the importance of producing palm oil responsibly and sustainably to the benefit of our people and our planet. In addition, the commitment towards 100% CSPO by 2015 on the demand side by many established global organizations - including processors, traders, consumer goods manufacturers and retailers - has been a major driver in getting growers on board.

“While such developments are a crucial step in the right direction, as demonstrated by the growing uptake of CSPO from 26% in 2009 to 56% in 2010, it is imperative that market uptake of sustainable palm oil accelerate at a greater pace to match the increasing rate of production. Industries should embrace the use of CSPO.

“The RSPO looks forward to future opportunities for dialogue and cooperation with EU decision-makers regarding the proposal made by the MVO.” Webber concluded.

The Netherlands, the fourth-largest country by RSPO membership, is also the second-largest EU consumer market in the RSPO, after the United Kingdom.

Aroun 12,000 Indonesians Working as Sailors Worldwide

Around 12,000 Indonesian men are currently working on board various ocean liners across international waters, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad said on Tuesday.
"There are around 12,000 Indonesian workers on board both domestic and foreign ships which sail across international waters at present," Fadel said in an economic-related dialog.

He obtained the data about the number after a hijacking incident of an Indonesian ship with 20 crews by Somali pirates almost a month ago. The minister explained that the thousands of Indonesian sailors spread in various regions in Asia and Europe.
Fadel pointed out that there were around 2,000 sailors in Spain, 600 in Taiwan, and 400 in Thailand. Therefore he said the sailors had been asked to form an association amongst Indonesian seamen.
"I have asked them to form the association and to remain getting in touch with with Indonesian embassies abroad," Fadel said.
Meanwhile, chairman of Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) faction at the House of Representatives (DPR), Thahjo Kumolo urged the government to immediately rescue 20 Indonesian nationals being held hostage by Somali pirates.
"I urge the government to immediately take action to set free the Indonesian national who are being held hostage by Somali pirates," Tjahjo Kumolo said.
An Indonesian ship MV Sinar Kudus with a cargo of ferronickel belonging to state mining company PT Aneka Tambang was on its way from Indonesia to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, when it was pirated by Somali gunmen on March 16, 2011.
The ill-fated ship left Pomala, Southeast Sulawesi in April for Rotterdam and was expected to have arrived in the Netherlands but it was hijacked and still somewhere at Somali water. Therefore Tjahjo said freeing the ship’s crew was a matter of national urgency and pride.

MOST men in heterosexual relationships feel they are not having enough sex, but seem more satisfied than women with the sex they are having, an Australian study has found.
Whether we have our desired amount of sex influences not only how happy we are with our sex life, but also our overall relationship, the researchers found.

Their study of more than 6500 men and women in regular relationships showed 54 per cent of men and 42 per cent of women were not satisfied with the amount of sex they were having. But while the dissatisfied men overwhelmingly wanted more sex, one-third of the dissatisfied women wanted less.
The study's co-author, Juliet Richters, of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of NSW, said often women preferred sex involving more than traditional intercourse. When this was not forthcoming, they could lose interest.
"They are just not getting the sex they want," she said.
"We have this idea that sex should revolve around intercourse and that favours the man of course,' she said.
This mismatch in expectations could partly explain why the women were less likely to be satisfied with their relationship despite being more satisfied with the amount of sex they were having, the research team wrote in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy.
Associate Professor Richters said the groups of men most likely to want less sex were aged 16 to 24, or those who had been in their relationship less than one year.
"If you look at some of the research it seems it often takes men of that age about a year to commit to a relationship, or longer," she said. "There are quite a lot of men who seem to get into relationships and start having sex and they are not at all sure that is what they want.'
The researchers said middle age seemed to be particularly unsatisfying for men.
'It may be no coincidence that this is when many couples face competing demands on their time, such as as juggling careers and raising a young family,' they said.
'It may also be possible that some women desire sex more often earlier in a relationship, or feel safer refusing sex in longer, more established relationships.'

Embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has enlisted the help of his glamorous only daughter in his fight to retain power in the war-ravaged country.
Aisha Gaddafi, a 34-year-old lawyer who has represented Saddam Hussein and the IRA, was photographed in the capital Tripoli, dressed in a veil and waving her father's green flag from a vehicle, London's Daily Mail reported.

Mobbed by supporters, her modest appearance was a far cry from the eye-catching designer outfits and voluminous blonde hair that earned her the nickname "the Claudia Schiffer of North Africa".
She told the crowd at the Bab Al Azizia compound that her father was a "great man and leader".
Her appearance came as Gaddafi's troops bombarded the oil terminal town of Ras Lanuf, east of Tripoli, and the United States fired missiles over Taiura, the suburb where the Libyan leader maintains a home.
Ms Gaddafi, her father's only daughter, was named as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador in 2009 but was stripped of the honour in February because of her support of Gaddafi's regime. As a lawyer she volunteered on the defence team that worked for Saddam Hussein before his trial and hanging in 2006.
When London's Telegraph asked Ms Gaddafi what she thought of Iraqis who claimed her client murdered thousands of their countrymen, she replied: "It is only normal that some people are against you and some people are with you. You are bound to meet people who may be against your policies".
According to CNN, she also defended the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoe at former US president George W. Bush. Ms Gaddafi married her cousin, army general Ahmed al-Gaddafi al-Qahsi, in 2006. The couple have three children.
The newspaper also wrote that she is resentful towards the West after the death of her adopted sister, Hana, who was killed when Ms Gaddafi was nine, during a US raid on Tripoli.
"I woke to the thunder of bombs and the screams of my sister, with blood splattered all over me," she is reported as saying at the time.
During a rare interview with the Telegraph last October she said people "generally gasp" when they find out who she is.
"... and then they become very friendly, and take the chance to send greeting to my father," she said.
"No one has ever reacted badly".
Ms Gaddafi reportedly tried to leave Libya for Malta in January but was turned back when the aircraft was denied permission to land, according to Al Jazeera and the Telegraph.
She denied the reports and told the Libyan public: "I am steadfastly here".

Indonesia to Stop Importing Rice

The government looks set to stop importing rice as of March 31, citing the ongoing grand harvest and adequate stocks.
"Rice imports will be stopped because they are no longer needed. Right now rice stocks are enough as almost all the country’s main rice-producing regions see grand harvest," Deputy Agriculture Minister Bayu Krisnamurthi said following a dialog with the national logistics agency (Bulog) and its working partners here on Wednesday.

The dialog was designed to find problems related to rice trading in North Sumatra. Krisnamurthi said the current rice stocks were enough to meet consumption for five to six months ahead.
On a national scale, since the government issued permits to rice importers some time ago rice imports had reached 1.6 million to 1.7 million tons. The rice imports had been used to build national stocks including market operations to keep down the rising rice prices, he said.
"Rice stocks are really safe. Even rice stocks in some regions such as North Sumatra are very safe or enough to meet consumption until the end of this year due to the ongoing harvest. So there will be no problem if the rice imports are stopped," he said.
He said six ships carrying 25,000 tons of imported rice were on their way to Belawan port in Medan. It would not be problem even if the rice imported by the North Sumatra branch of Bulog would arrive at the port after March 31.

They spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information. The New York Times reported the CIA had sent in small groups of CIA operatives.

Balinese Expected to Support "Save Earth Appeal"

All elements in the Balinese society were expected to meet an appeal of the United Nations’ (UN) Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) for saving the earth from the danger of global warming, an environmentalist said.

"The appeal of an international organization consists of three important matters and has received positive responses from Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika," Spokesman of Bali Green Community Committee (BGC), Made Aripta Wibawa, said here Monday.

He said the organization had urged the world community to stop eating meat, ride bike in the daily transportation activities as well as become a frugal shopper.

According to the World Food Organizations (FAO) report, the meat was a commodity, which produced carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) equivalent to 18 percents so that the contribution exceeded 13 percent of CO2 emissions from all means of transportation in the world.

"If we are able to exercise diet, stop eating meat products and become vegetarians, the CO2 emissions can be reduced up to 1.5 tons a year," Wibawa said.

Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika’s support for the UN IPCC appeal was marked by declaring the World Vegan Organic Day and Friday as a Day Without Animal Products (Friday - Animal Product Free Day).

The declaration was addressed to the people of the world, Indonesia and Bali province in particular to save the earth from the danger of global warming. Wibawa said livestock sector could harm the earth due to the fact that modern agriculture, especially in developed countries, required large electricity power supplies from production process to meat storage.
