I am in Santiago, Chile, enjoying family and friends, summertime and all of the above: 1) view of the Manquehue hill from my sister's flat. 2) pisco sour, is it cocktail hour yet?? 3) empanadas! simply delicious with pino filling, consisting traditionally of beef, onions, raisins, black olives, and hard boiled eggs. 4) mighty bougainvilleas. 5) the view of Santiago with the majestic Andes in the background, and last, but not least: 6) my parents' street, where I grew up. That's why I haven't been around.

V is for verdigris

Verdigris is a green or bluish patina formed on copper, brass, or bronze surfaces exposed to the atmosphere for long periods of time, consisting principally of basic copper sulfate.Source. This is a picture from my archives taken near Hamburg, Germany. The building dates back to 1644, according to the inscription, but I am not sure about the verdigris object... Posted for ABC Wednesday.

ABC Wednesday

This quadruped is a sculpture of Fernando Botero, a Colombian painter and sculptor who is renowned for his exaggerated, puffed up human and animal forms. Located on Rambla del Raval in Barcelona, the large bronze feline stands with its thick tail. More images from the net are here.

Dimensions: 7,17 m / 23.5 ft long, 2,28 m/ 7.5 ft wide , 2,16m / 7 ft tall, weight: 2200 Kg / 4850 lb.

Light bulbs found in a department store in Paris. More pictures of this beautiful place can be found here. I kept looking up at the wonderful dome and decorations, all other goodies were not as appealing! The store's unique Belle Epoque architecture, which features a dramatic colored glass dome and an ornate Art Nouveau staircase offering dizzying perspectives, contributed to the department store being named a Paris city heritage site. ABC Wednesday

The peculiar street lamps designed in 1906 by Pere Falqués i Urpí (please note the bat at 12 o'clock, on top of the crown, no special meaning has been given to it) found in central Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona, a city which is said to represent the world's greatest urban concentration of Modernist or Art Noveau architecture. This movement is characterized by amazing combinations of curved surfaces, as opposed to harsh corners and straight lines. Another example of that is the (partially) pictured Gaudi building : La Pedrera.

This 12 meters/39 ft high wood sculpture by the Swiss artist Daniel Berset represents a giant chair with a broken leg and stands on the Place des Nations, in Geneva. It symbolizes opposition to land mines and cluster bombs, and acts as a reminder to politicians and others visiting Geneva. I have posted other pictures of this broken chair here already, bear with me, it's all because of the message.

A panoramic view of the the Plaça d'Espanya from the 27m/ 88.6 ft high rooftop terrace of a new shopping mall in Barcelona, which was once a bullfighting ring and it is pictured in the prior post.

The tall Venetian Towers mark the road that leads to the Magic Fountain and to the National Palace of Montjuic, which can be seen in the back.This palace was constructed in 1929 in order to house the installations for the International Exhibition of that year in Montjuic, and to display a selection of Spanish art. Along with other buildings from the same exhibition it should have been knocked down when the exhibitión ended, but it was preserved and it nowadays houses the Catalonia Art Museum. Aditionally, the Barcelona Fair buildings can be found on both sides of the Venetian Towers.

This is a new shopping mall in Barcelona, which was once a bullfighting ring (I like it much better like this!) The mall has a beautiful neo-Mudejar facade dating back to 1900 and striped Moorish arches. The remodelling of the long-abandoned bullring was completed in 2011 after many years of planning and construction. . Source

Part of a necropolis from the second and third centuries A.D. lie in Vila de Madrid square downtown Barcelona. The 95 graves lie in between flower-beds on both sides of one of the minor roads that leads into the Roman city of Barcino (Barcelona). Most of the tombs are 'cupae', a simple funeral monument. The necropolis lies outside the Roman wall, as the law prohibited burials within the city. Source. I find ancient places simply fascinating , this one is open to the public all the time, as you can see in the picture.
