Here are a few tips to get you started:

Use sharp tools

This makes turning much easier and quicker, and means that the wood is cut smoothly. My bowl gouge needs sharpening about four times for one bowl, so you may wish to buy an electric grinder to make sharpening quick and easy.

Practice with each tool

It took me a while before I could cut smoothly and without dig-ins. So get yourself a piece of scrap wood and practice different techniques on it until you get good at them. For between centres work, you need to be able to: rough out (gouge), smooth (skew chisel), and form shapes (parting/beading tool, spindle gouge). When I make bowls, I use only one tool (a bowl gouge) for almost everything, so don't feel that you must have loads of tools to begin with! Also, try not to be put off if a tool snatches (usually the skew chisel) as this will be remedied with practice.

Get a book or video

There are lots of woodturning books and videos which I found very useful. If there is another woodturner in your area, get in touch, but if not, books and videos give lots of advice and tips. They also show people actually woodturning so you can see what to do. There are lots of woodturning sites on the internet too

Use different grades of sandpaper

Start with the roughest, sanding until all tool marks are gone. Change to a finer grade to get rid of the rough sandpaper scratches. Finally, use an even finer grade to get the wood glassy smooth. I use '150', '240', and '320' sandpaper. You can get the wood even better still if you hold a handful of wood shavings against it to 'burnish' the surface.

Check before switching on

Before you start the lathe, spin the wood to check that it won't hit anything on the way round. Check that all bolts/clamps are tight too. Remember your safety glasses just in case the unexpected happens! If you are sanding the wood wear a dust mask, especially with exotic hardwoods.

Step 1. GLASS AS A PAINTING SUPPORT

Both glasses (or plastified glass) are non-absorbent painting supports which do not allow the paint to easily adhere to them, apart from through the paint's own drying process.

For this reason, the outline of a subject painted on glass needs to be simplified when applied to an extremely smooth surface.

Working the paint or changing outlines without smudging the surrounding areas of undried paint requires patience, as well as a certain amount of skill.

Simplifying a subject does not necessarily detract from the end result after the painting is completed. The final result often has an appearance similar to that of naive art, in which composition and form and a certain number of other details are simplified. Many artists will find that such simplification can actually be very appealing.

With patience and the development of their skills, while using this painting technique, artists will find that applying and mastering the use of glass as support will become easier as time progresses.

Step 2. PREPARING THE PAINTING SUPPORT

Choose a piece of clear glass (or plastified glass) in the dimensions you would like to work with and check carefully to make sure the surface is neither scratched nor flawed.

It is worthwhile remembering that a flaw in the glass itself will often detract from the finished appearance of a painting and may be impossible to remove after the completion of your artwork.

The sheet of glass that is to become your artwork constitutes the following:

(1) The ‘painting side’ - or the side you will be painting on.

(2) The ‘viewing side’ - or the side you will be looking at (or through) as you progress with your work, and after it has been completed.

To render the cutting edges of the glass safe, take a length of sellotape that will correspond to the length of one edge. Apply it carefully along that length (ideally so that it is folded equally over each side of the glass). Repeat this procedure for the other 3 glass edges. The edge of the sellotape will also help mark the outer limits of your artwork.

Clean the surface of the glass thoroughly with a glass-cleaning product. Use paper towelling or any cleaning material that will not leave dust or threads on your painting surface.

Store the glass where it will be safe. If placed between sheets of newspaper it will be protected from scratches and dust.

Step 3. MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR REVERSE PAINTING

Glass

Choose clear unflawed glass (or plastified glass) in the shape and size you wish to use. It is advised to choose smaller sizes to begin with.

Paints

It is necessary to use a paint that will adhere properly to the surface of the glass. Oil based paints or acrylics are often used for this reason. There are also opaque and transparent ceramic artist colours that have been especially manufactured for using on a non-absorbant surface. Metallic oil-based colours (eg. gold, silver or copper) can also be interesting to work with.

Paintbrushes

Choose a selection of small or medium-sized paintbrushes with fine, flat and pointed tips. Larger brushes can be used for working on a larger scale.

A penholder

It can be an advantage to use interchangeable nibs suitable for creating both thick and thin outlines.

A painting palette

Or something similar to mix your paint on.

A palette knife

(Optional) for mixing paint.

Step 4. CREATING OUTLINES

Art products in liquid form that are suitable for creating outlines on glass may be readily available in some countries. Oil-based paint, water-based acrylic and ceramic paint can also be used for this purpose. In order to create fine lines, these paints must sometimes be thinned down in order to use with a pen nib or similar line-drawing tool.

To prevent lines from being effaced too easily use a paint that is oil-based for creating the outlines of your subject if the paint you will be applying over the top of it (after it has properly dried) is water-based.

Reverse this procedure if your outlines are created with water-based paint.

Always use a liquid paint product that will provide the best adhesion possible to a glass surface.

Due to pen nibs clogging relatively easily attention must be paid to cleaning the nibs regularly.

Method 1.

If you have a steady hand you can use a freehand method for applying outlines directly onto the surface of the glass.

Method 2.

Use an original subject for your painting (e.g. a drawing) and place this under the glass, then copy it onto the glass surface.

Method 3.

Place a layer of carbon paper on top of the glass then place your drawing on top of the carbon paper and with a pointed object trace the subject onto the glass.

Method 4.

A tracing table can be used for creating outlines. This is a table with a sheet of clear glass inserted into the top and an electric light source situated beneath it. For those who frequently need to trace their work, a tracing table can be very practical and useful.

Method 5.

You can omit outlines altogether.

Most artists have a preference for how to work when creating an artwork. Once you have decided whether to use a table easel, a standing easel or prefer placing your artwork either slightly propped up on a table or flat down, you will find it necessary to view your artwork regularly from its observation side in order to see its progress. Some artists simply take the glass in their hands and turn it around to look at it directly from its observation side. Others prefer to use a mirror placed directly opposite their working area so that they can observe their progress while they paint.

Mixing and blending

If you are blending colours, always do so on your palette before applying them to the glass. If colours are not well blended or mixed the result will be a streaky appearance in the paint on the observation side of the glass.

Avoiding smudges

It is important to watch out for smudges of paint, or particles of dirt or dust that may accidentally be transferred onto unpainted areas of your artwork as you are progressing. Unless removed these may appear as flaws that will show when viewing the artwork from its observation side. If they are also inadvertently covered with a layer of paint removing them afterwards may become very messy and difficult. When lifting off any smudges always be careful not to damage outlines or other areas of paint you have already applied.

Step 5. APPLYING THE PAINT

Once the outlines of your subject have thoroughly dried you can begin to apply paint to fill in the remainder of your artwork. Keep in mind that applying layer on layer of paint on a non-absorbant surface needs to be done carefully in order to avoid one layer lifting off the preceding one. For this reason ample drying-time should be allowed between layers.

Painting the subject of a reverse painting on glass requires a different approach to that of a normal painting method. In the case of a reverse painting on glass it is necessary to paint the subject or subjects situated in the foreground first, and those in the background afterwards. You will therefore normally begin by painting more detailed objects first, e.g. eyes, faces, figures or other foreground objects. This also means that if you wish to sign your artwork you will need to begin by applying your signature.

For practical reasons it is best to begin working from the centre of the artwork outwards in order to avoid your hands having to touch the glass surface more than necessary. To watch your progress from the viewing side of the glass, carefully turn your artwork around from time to time, or use a mirror as indicated in Step 3.

Keep in mind:

- That your artwork will be observed from the opposite side to the one you are painting on.

- That you are painting in reverse, therefore foregrounds precede backgrounds.

When applying the reverse painting method it is best to think carefully about the sequence in which your painting will develop before beginning to apply your paint. This will help create the methodical approach that is necessary for this particularly interesting and also intricate painting technique.

It is necessary to use paint that will adhere properly to the surface of the glass. Oil-based paints or acrylics are often used for this reason. There are also opaque and transparent ceramic artist colours that have been specially manufactured for use on a non-absorbant surface. Metallic oil-based colours (eg. gold, silver or copper) can also be interesting to work with.

Paintbrushes

Choose a selection of small or medium-sized paintbrushes with fine, flat and pointed tips. Larger brushes can be used for working on a larger scale.

Step 4. CREATING OUTLINES

Reverse this procedure if your outlines are created with water-based paint.

Always use a liquid paint product that will provide the best adhesion possible to a glass surface.

Method 1.

If you have a steady hand you can use a freehand method for applying outlines directly onto the surface of the glass.

Method 2. Use an original subject for your painting (e.g. a drawing) and place this under the glass, then copy it onto the glass surface.

Method 3. Place a layer of carbon paper on top of the glass then place your drawing on top of the carbon paper and with a pointed object trace the subject onto the glass.

Method 4. A tracing table can be used for creating outlines.

This is a table with a sheet of clear glass inserted into the top and with an electric light source situated beneath it. For those who frequently need to trace their work, a tracing table can be very practical and useful.

Method 5. You can omit outlines altogether.

Once the outlines of your subject have thoroughly dried you can begin to apply paint to fill in the remainder of your artwork. Keep in mind that applying layer on layer of paint on a non-absorbant surface needs to be done carefully in order to avoid one layer lifting off the preceding one. For this reason, ample drying time should be allowed between layers.

For practical reasons, it is best to begin working from the centre of the artwork outwards in order to avoid your hands having to touch the glass surface more than necessary. To watch your progress from the viewing side of the glass, carefully turn your artwork around from time to time, or use a mirror as indicated in Step 3.

Keep in mind:

- That your artwork will be observed from the opposite side to the one you are painting on.

- That you are painting in reverse, therefore foregrounds precede backgrounds.

Holly

This wood is fine-grained and heavy and is pure white in colour. As the holly is of shrub-like proportions, its wood can be used, like boxwood, only for small objects and carvings, musical instruments, and inlay. Holly is fairly easy to work with and will take detail without breaking or splitting.

Curly Jarrah

This wood is rich red in colour and is probably the most important tree found in Western Australia. It can grow to as much as six feet in diameter. Jarrah carves well and takes a very high natural polish. It is extremely durable. The grain is straight but with a wavy or rippling character.

Iroko

This is the West African carver's favourite wood Exposure to air turns the wood from straw colour to red and the surface hardens. Finally, however, it becomes hard all through and it is resistant to termites.

Kingwood

This timber, not easily obtained, is found in Brazil and is similar to Indian Rosewood. Sizes are small, the maximum being 18 inches in diameter. The colour of the wood is remarkable, almost violet with narrow, regular black stripes interspersed with wide, lighter bands. The grain is uniform and the wood will burnish to a fine natural polish.

Lignum Vitae

This is one of the heaviest of all woods and is therefore widely used for mallets and tools where weight and toughness are required. The heartwood is dark greenish-brown and the sapwood a contrasting yellow. The fibres of the wood are interlocked and it is impossible to split, though it can be carved with sharp tools.

lime

This is a favourite wood for sculpture. It is firm and pleasant to carve. The colour is white to yellowish pink. Lime takes stain or bleach readily, the latter turning the timber pure white. It is moderately hard and takes a very good polish. Lime is also used for drawing boards, hat blocks and cabinetwork.

woodturning lessons - Nine Things I Wish Somone Had Told Me

After more than four decades of woodturning, it is difficult for me to remember how I first learned. I do remember seventh-grade shop classes and also my father showing me the little bit he knew. Mainly, learning was by trial and error. As years went by, I got better at it, partly because I was exposed to some good books such as the classic by Frank Pain, and The Practical Woodturner, but it became clear to me that woodturning was an obscure speciality. Many of the tools I saw in old books were not available.

Today woodturning is no longer obscure. The woodturning renaissance has had 30 years to mature – we have the American Association of Woodturners and hundreds of books and instructional videos. As a result, no one has to learn by trial and error in isolation as I did when I was a kid starting out in 1960. Nonetheless, in this article, I will attempt to help beginners not by giving simply a set of “tips”, but a list of items which fall into one or more of the following categories:

• Things I did incorrectly at first, and later had to “unlearn.”

• Things I should have learned sooner rather than later.

• Things I had to figure out on my own because they were not in any books I had seen.

While I will jump around to many different topics, these represent some of the high points in my odyssey of discovery.

1 CUTTING VS SCRAPING – I wish my seventh-grade shop teacher had said to me, “I’m teaching you the scraping method because you’re a beginner, but someday when you get serious about woodturning you’ll learn the cutting method.” If he had done so, I would have realized from the start that he was sending me down the wrong path.

Twenty years later, I found myself teaching shop, and I quickly discovered that you never learn something as well as when you must teach it. I developed this educational philosophy – don’t teach beginners the wrong way just because you think it might be easier for them to grasp. This does the students a great disservice and insults their intelligence. Show students the right way from the beginning, and be honest about the commitment required.

It’s easy to criticize my shop teacher now, but I don’t think he was purposely keeping anything from me. Rather I suspect he was not in possession of that information. In those days, industrial arts textbooks described mostly the use of scrapers. Gouges were used only for roughing out spindles. Many of these textbooks were written by authors whose expertise was mainly in metalwork and pattern making.

2 A LATHE IS NOT A VISE – I once read in what I thought was a reputable magazine that the wood should be placed between centres and the tailstock tightened as hard as possible! Yikes! Excessive force from the tailstock causes a multitude of problems – premature wear on the headstock bearings, premature wear on the tailstock centre bearings, and most importantly, the vibration of the workpiece. It took me a long time to realize that excessive force between centres was a major contributor to the workpiece vibration of long thin spindles. A well-tuned drive centre with sharp spurs (as sharp as a chisel) and a centre point that is just the right length (or on a spring) will allow turning with minimum force from the tailstock.

3 THE WOODTURNER’S BEST FRIEND – Paraffin wax, sold at grocery stores for canning, makes an excellent lubricant for your tool rest. Break each bar up into small pieces so you have one within easy reach around your lathe. Use paraffin on the tool rest every five or ten minutes. Use it on the lathe bed too. Everything will go better. Paraffin is much more convenient than paste wax from a can.

4 YOU DON’T NEED MANY CHISELS – I wasted a lot of time and money buying chisels I didn’t need. As time went on, I realized that there are only about five chisels for spindle turning, and another five (bowl gouges and scrapers) for cross-grain work, that I really need. The chisels I no longer use are mainly the large ones. Refer to my article in the June 2005 issue of The Old Saw for suggestions on the essential chisels.

5 YOU WON’T GET FAR WITHOUT A STEADY REST – Frank Pain’s book introduced me to the technique of using my hand to steady the work and reduce vibration. As an unexpected benefit, I also learned that touching the work with my fingers can tell me things about the quality of the surface which my eyes alone could not detect. But for a long time, the flexibility of spindles was a limiting factor in my furniture designs. While I consider the use of the hand to steady the work an essential skill, it will only go so far. Once I got a good mechanical steady rest, I could cut as deeply as I wanted, and my turnings instantly improved.

6 SHARP TOOLS PLUS GOOD TECHNIQUE EQUALS LESS SANDING – In my early years, I thought that it didn’t matter much how you got the shape because, in the end, you could sand the work into submission. The lesson, which came gradually, is that less sanding is better for many reasons – sanding is boring, sanding dust is horrific and sandpaper costs money. But most importantly, the work looks better with a minimum of sanding because the surfaces are true and the details are crisp.

7 YOUR LATHE NEEDS SPEED CONTROL – Years ago, most lathes had step pulleys with four speeds – fast, faster and two more even higher speeds which were so ridiculously fast that no one ever used them. So essentially we had two-speed lathes and used the low speed for bowls and the second speed for spindles. Today, lathes with step pulleys have five or six speeds, but the problem has not changed. The lowest speed is not low enough and the high speeds are still ridiculous. In general, all these lathes would be better if the speeds were cut in half. Variable speed mechanisms are a great improvement, but variable speed motors with two or three-speed ranges are ideal.

8 FLAT GRIND – One day I discovered that chisels ground with a flat bevel works better than those that are hollow ground. I quickly re-ground all my cutting tools to the new flat grind, and I have never looked back. It’s hard to describe the feeling of that day. Without buying anything new or investing additional years of practice, I had suddenly made great progress in my ability, and I was seeing results that amazed me. If you attended the lecture by Michael Dunbar last September, you may remember he said the same thing about drawing knives, scoops, etc. Any tool which is guided by riding the bevel should not be hollow ground.

9 THE JOY OF WOODTURNING IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE MASS OF YOUR LATHE – This is not to say that I don’t like mini-lathes, I do. Any lathe that is built with all its parts in proportion with each other will function well on workpieces that are also in proportion to its size.

Back in the ’70s, I was fortunate to get a used Blount lathe (made in Milford, NH) which weighs about 500 pounds. My experience with that lathe resulted in a great leap forward. In particular, I think having a well-designed tool rest on a 300 pound cast iron bed made me realize how turning should feel. Now I have three lathes at 50, 500, and 5,000 pounds, and the Blount holds the middle ground.
