ADHAAN (CALL TO PRAYER)

The "Adhaan" is a call to inform others in specific words that the time for a particular prayer has begun.lt is a call to the congregation and is an expression of the lslamic practice.It is required as an act for all the Obligatory Prayers.

The greatness of the virtue which lslam attaches to the "Adhaan" and the one who performs it i.e. the "Muadhin", can be noted from the following verse of the Holy Our'an: "WHO IS BETTER IN SPEECH THAN ONE WHO CALLS (THE PEOPLE) TO ALLAH AND WORKS RIGHTEOUSIVESS". (Our'an 41:33) The mother of the faithful, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her ) confirmed that this verse concerns and refers to the Muadhin and was revealed on no other reason than for the Muadhin. And, from the prophetic traditions,Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (PBUH), said: "lf the people knew the reward in the Adhaan and the first row of the prayer and that they could not get it (the reward)save by drawing lots, they would draw lots....." (Narrated by lmam Bukhari) And, in another saying the Prophet (PBUH) ,said: "The "Muadhins" will on the Day of Judgement have the longest necks (reflecting their exclusive eminence)". (Reported by lmam Muslim).

Preferably,there should be an appointed Muadhin at each Mosque who will call the people to prayer when the time of a particular prayer is due.In performing the Adhaan, the Muadhrn would stand facing the direction of the "Qiblah" (the sacred mosque in Makkah).He would then raise both hands upto his ears and say in a loud voice the following words:

ALLAHU AKBAR -Allah is the greatest.(to be repeated 4 times)
ASH.HADU ANNA MUHAMMADAN RASUULULLAAH - l testify that Muhammad(S.A.W) is Allah's messenger. (to be repeated 2 times)
HAYYA'ALAS SALAAT - Come fast to prayer. (to be repeated 2 times). The Muadhin, when reciting this turns the face slightly to the right side.
HAYYA'ALAL FALAAH - Come fast to success. (to be repeated 2 times). The Muadhin, when reciting this turns the face slightly to the left side.
ALLAHU AKBAR - Allah is the greatest. ( to be repeated 2 times)
LAA ILAHA ILLALLAAH - There is no god but Allah. (to be recited once)

THE VIRTUES OF PRAYER

Salaat( Prayer) performed genuinely with humility and submission to "Allah( SWT) " has unlimited virtues and beneifts. lt is the noblest expression of faith and the surest way of thanking "Allah(S.W.T)" for His unlimited favours. lt is the way to obtaining Allah's mercy, generosity, kindness, blessings and a sure way to paradise. "Allah (SWT)" says in the Holy Our'an:

''PROSPEROUS INDEED ARE THE BELIEVERS WHO ARE HUMBLE IN THEIR PRAYERS". (Our'an 23:1 -2)

It is a deliverance on the Day of Judgement for those who used to observe it well. The Prophet (PBUH) says: "The first thing that the servant of "Allah (SWT)" will be called to account for on the Day of Judgement will be the prayer; and if it was good the person's deeds will have been good, but if it was bad, the person's deeds will have been bad". (Reported by lmam bhukari)

Prayer purifies the soul, refines the character and inculcates in man the excellent virtues of truthfulness, honesty and modesty.lt keeps one who performs it from falsehood and from all forbidden actions as is categorically confirmed by the following verse of the Holy Our'an:

"...VERILY, PRAYER REFRAINS FROM INDECENCY AND EVIL..."(Our'an 29:45)

Salah And Its Categories

SALAH
Prayer is the most essential obligatory duty which a Muslim must perform.This is the most obvious act which a Muslim does to show his/her obedience to Allah (S.W.T).This is also the second Pillar of Islam.
Allah (S.W.T) gave Namaz as a gift to the Prophet (S.W.T) for his Ummah on the night of Miraj Sharif.
In prayer a person leaves everything and devotes himself to the worship of Allah(S.W.T).This can be done individually or in congregation (jammat).
Before performing prayer, a person must sure that his body, clothes and his place of worship are clean.
It is a Hadith of the Prophet Muhammed (S.W.T) that: “A person who reads Namaz five times a day, his/her sins will fall like leaves off a tree during autumn”.

DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF SALAH

1. Farz : means duty. It is compulsory and should not be avoided. It has two sub-divisions:

a) Farz-i-ayn : which is compulsory on all Muslims, for example offering Namaz five times a day, fasting during the month of Ramadan etc. One who performs it gets the reward but one who does not perform it is a sinner, liable to be punished .One who rejects it altogether is a kafir (Unbeliever).

b) Farz-i-kifayah : which is not compulsory on all Muslims and even if a group of Muslims performs it the responsibility of all Muslims would be fulfilled, for example Namaz-i-janazah (Namaz for the dead).

2. Wajib : means essential or necessary .It is next to Farz in importance ,for example Namaz-i-Idd. One who performs it gets the reward but one who does not perform it is a sinner liable to be punished.

3. Sunnah: means that which Prophet Muhammed(S.A.W) did.There are two types of sunnaths:

a) Sunnath-i-maukkadah : that which Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) always did and ordered his followers to do. One who does it gets reward and one who does not do it will be deprived of intercession (shafat) by the Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) on the day of judgement.

b) Sunnath-i-ghair muakkadah : that which Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) did occasionally and which is optional on his followers. One who does it gets a reward.

4. Nafil : means extra . One who does it gets a reward but one who does not do is not liable to be punished.
