Hamilton Hearts For Haiti fundraiser concert Sun Jan 31st

The Hamilton Spectator and Vibewrangler Studio are presenting a fundraiser concert event for Haiti relief efforts on Sunday, January 31 at Hamilton Place's Great Hall theatre.

FEIST ,Tom Wilson + Stephen Fearing of BLACKIE and the RODEO KINGS, The Arkells, LUKE DOUCET +MELISSA MCCLELLAND, JACOB MOON, Lee Harvey Osmond, Harlan Pepper, Lily Frost, Brian Melo with many more TBA will perform to raise money in support of Disaster Relief in Haiti.
. All proceeds from the event will be distributed to three Registered Charities that are already on the ground and familiar to Hamilton/Oakville residents already supporting their ongoing work on the ground in Haiti and matched dollar for dollar by the Government of Canada's Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.

The Canadian Friends of Albert Schweitzer Hospital (which operates out in the mountain region north of the Haitian Capital), OMS Canada, which operates a mission in Cape Haitian and the International Child Care, which operates Grace Hospital in Port-Au-Prince (watch W5 on Sat Jan 23 at 7pm for the full story on this worthy organization) .

The event is coming together quickly, with sponsors and acts signing on to help every few hours since launch on Friday.

The situation in Haiti is deteriorating rapidly (with a new 6.1 earthquake just this week) and we are supporting all efforts to do our part and help the Haitian people.

Like how come the vid we posted sounds and looks so bad? No matter.
Its just an example of what not to do. LOL.

Recording World Loses Musical Giant and Inventor: Les Paul

Guitar great and originator of the multitrack recording dies at the age of 94. Les Paul has been widely credited with the invention of sound on sound recording which is the originator of multitrack recording which is the standard method of recording each musical part on a separt track for control and manipulation of the sound.

Apart from his continual weekly club performances well into his 90's this giant of the instrument was know for his innovative musical style as well as his inovations in recording techinique.

Paul even built his own disc-cutter assembly, based on auto parts. He favored the flywheel from a Cadillac for its weight and flatness. Even in these early days, he used the acetate disk setup to record parts at different speeds and with delay, resulting in his signature sound with echoes and birdsong-like guitar riffs. When he later began using magnetic tape, the major change was that he could take his recording rig on tour with him, even making episodes for his 15-minute radio show in his hotel room.

Here is a great example his unique performance that demonstrates both his wonderful guitar playing and technical inovation as he plays along with pre-recorded takes of himself and Mary Ford in an arrangement of the Jazz standart "How Hight the Moon". His talented wife Mary Ford was a well known and respected Jazz and Pop singer of the 1940's.

Les Paul's need for multiple non-destructive tracks was obvious and his re-invention of the Ampex 200 inspired Ampex to develop two-track and three-track recorders. These machines were the backbone of professional recording, radio and television studios in the 1950s and early 1960s. In 1954, Paul continued to develop this technology by commissioning Ampex to build the first eight track tape recorder, at his expense. The machine took three years to get working properly, and Paul said that by the time it was functional his music was out of favor and so he never had a hit record using it. His design became known as "Sel-Sync," (Selective Synchronization) in which a specially modified electronics could either record or playback from the Record Head, which was not optimized for playback but was acceptable for the purposes of recording an "overdub" (OD) in sync with the original recording. This is the core technology behind multi-track recording.

Like Bing Crosby, Paul and Ford also used the now-ubiquitous recording technique known as close miking, where the microphone is less than six inches from the singer's mouth. This produces a more intimate, less reverberant sound than is heard when a singer is a foot or more from the microphone. When implemented using a cardioid-patterned microphone, it emphasizes low-frequency sounds in the voice due to a cardioid microphone's proximity effect and can give a more relaxed feel because the performer isn't working so hard.

An online music consultant, a co-founder of Music Think Tank and the author of New Music Strategies, Dubber is one of the world’s leading experts on the topic of practical online business models for the music business. HAMILTON, ON, Nov. 28 /CNW/ - On Sunday, November 16, Hamilton
musicians and artists launched the Christmas holiday season early, recording
a new Christmas song to support local and international AIDS efforts. Written
byJeffrey C. Martin, singer/songwriter for new folk-rock group The Caretakers,
the song is being produced by Glen Marshall and Michael Keire of Hamilton's
Vibewrangler Recording Studio. Local musicians including The Mississippi
Kings, Tom Wilson, Mike McCurlie and Jesse Lewis have contributed to this
Christmas fundraising initiative.
Sing Merry Christmas will be released on Monday, December 1st - World AIDS Day
- and will be available for free to download atwww.singmerrychristmas.com. "When
people go to the website to download theMP3, they have the choice of making a donation
in whatever amount they wish inthe spirit of goodwill," says Martin. "During this Christmas season, peoplewill have the choice of donating to the (Hamilton) AIDS Network and/or the Stephen Lewis Foundation. They'll be helping children and families not only in the Hamilton area who are simply trying to hang on to life, one challenging and often frightening day at a time, but also the millions of orphans andwomen suffering from AIDS in Africa."
In order for this Christmas song to sustain some long-term fundraising
capacity, Martin (composer), Marshall and Keire (producers) have agreed to
direct all future publishing royalties to the Stephen Lewis Foundation
indefinitely. "We want to make an official presentation once a date and time
can be arranged with the Foundation," says Martin. "Every time this song is
played on radio, Internet or performed publicly, royalties will accrue and go
to support the Foundation."
"I think every songwriter would like to pen a song for Christmas that has
the potential to become a holiday favourite," says producer Glen Marshall. "I
think Jeff has done it with Sing Merry Christmas. We all liked it the first
time we heard the demo. It's a song about hope, goodwill and the true spirit
of Christmas. But more important, the song will lend a hand to a cause that is
in great need of help."
Organizations like the AIDS Network work to recognize and respond to the
stigma and challenges posed by HIV/AIDS on individuals and communities through
education and support. "But we don't do it alone," says Adrian Betts, interim
executive director. "Events like SingMerryChristmas.com are crucial. It's a
wonderful way to bring the AIDS prevention message to a broad cross section of
the public in a non-confrontational manner. We're extremely grateful to
organizer Jeff Martin for including the AIDS Network and the Stephen Lewis
Foundation in his holiday gift list. Thanks to his hard work, and the talent
of all the generous musicians and producers, every person who makes a donation
for this song over the holiday season will be making a very real contribution
to the fight against AIDS, here at home and around the world."
The statistics about AIDS are mind-boggling says Martin. "There are 40
million people infected with the HIV virus around the world, 28 million of
them in sub-Saharan Africa, of which nearly two thirds are women - and more
than 11 million children have been orphaned by AIDS. Since the beginning of
the epidemic more than 15 million Africans have died from AIDS. This 20th
century plague has caused immense human suffering everywhere."
"Christmas is supposed to be that time of year filled with joy and
happiness, but too many people don't even have the necessities of life, like
shelter, food and basic healthcare," says Lena Smye, lead vocalist with The
Caretakers. "We take much for granted today and get so hung up on our own
problems that are relatively small stuff compared to what the majority of
people on this planet, particularly children, are facing every day. So this is
one small way of helping those in both our local and global community who
desperately need it."
The coalition of Hamilton musicians and supporters are hoping that at the
very least, local businesses and organizations will promote the Sing MerryChristmas URL - www.singmerrychristmas.com - to their employees, suppliers and peers. "Our only goal is to offer people a new sing-along Christmas song that they can play this season and many more," says Marshall. "But most
importantly, we want to encourage people to help us rid the scourge of AIDS
everywhere, especially from our developing world in exchange for this song.
The first part is easy, the second part will define the extent of our humanity."

Vibewrangler Sessions in New York With World Music All Stars

Vibewrangler producer Glen Marshall just returned from a week of recording sessions in NYC with cellist and ex patriot Rufus Cappadocia and Haitian percussionist and performer Bonga Gaston Jean Baptist.

Marshall has been working on the follow up to Rufus' critically acclaimed solo album "Songs for cello", an album that has really opened up doors internationally for the New York based Cappadocia.

The album was originally signed to NY's Velour label, who in turn helped have the album signed the to the prestigious Daqui label, which is the Imprint label for the Nuit Atypiques Festival in France and distributed world wide by the respected prestige distributor and label Harmonium Mundi. The "Daqui" Label which means literally "from here" is known to feature some of the worlds rarest and beautiful musical cultural treasures.

Also collaborating with Cappadocia is Haitian born percussionist and performer Bonga Gaston Jean-Baptist. Marshall also co-produced Ayiti Afrika with Bonga's group The Vodou Drums of Haiti. Bonga has been featured on tracks and performed with Wyclef Jean and Grace Jones to name a few.

Also cutting tracks at the session was Cameroonian born singer Kaissa who divides her time between her own career and backing up performers as diverse as Salif Keita, Cesaria Evora , Diana Ross, and is preparing for a fall tour with David Byrne.
