Thoughtful Thur~ 250 Celebration Yard Flag

The only thing I had in mind for this flag was

the fabric I would use to cut the numbers.

The font is just the same old free hand cut

I've made since way back doing

bulletin boards for the classroom.

Once I pulled out my fabrics (my color pallet),

and started laying out bits and pieces

the ideas came to my head.

The height of letters about 6 inches

and width 5 inches.

The "ribbons" are 2.5 inches wide.

They were cut off where the bottom piece was added.

The ribbons were only appliqued down about 3 inches.

The rest was left to hang free.

Here you see one is still wet from

Fray Check being applied.

The one on the left is already dry.

I still have my bottle of Fray Check from

about 20 years ago

when we thought we had to have it to

finish serger end seams.

I didn't notice till I pulled up the pictures on the computer

I forgot to applique the center of the zero.

In the quilting world around here

we have a saying for accepting mistakes,

"If you can't see it while riding by on a fast horse,

then it's acceptable."

So will the cars driving by see that?

The walkers, maybe?

Since it has iron on interfacing on the back

I'm not worried.

What a great year to celebrate!

Tues Tutorial~ Great Grand's Bday Card 2026

Last summer Great Grand's Mom took him to "Dinosaur World" in Cave City, KY. Since then he has talked, played, had toys, colored, drawn and told his creative stories about dinosaurs. He even gave me a dinosaur magnet for Christmas which I display on my fridge and have him in my mind every time I open the fridge (which can be often.)

So naturally, his card this year was a dinosaur.

Not sure how I'll use this.

But who isn't attracted to a little bling sparkles?

His gift to me for Christmas will become the pattern.

It's just the perfect size for a card.

Love it when things come together and work.

Kept the outline intact

to help audition the fabric.

Decided on the one with a white circle

in the right place for the eye.

Then I auditioned the background.

One great thing about having

one piece of batik is like

having multiple pieces of fabric to choose from

for a project.

White pieces were too much competition.

The finale:

Chose darkest background.

The bling became a cloud.

Thank goodness I still have

old time tiny pins.

Can you believe I used them to sew garments

once upon a time with them?

When sewing around tiny pieces like this,

I'm so appreciative of the automatic foot lift

that raises on its own every time I stop which

allows me to adjust the turn of the fabric.

That allows me to keep both hands on the fabric,

or maybe my right hand on a stiletto.

Even every stitch or two

the foot may need to raise and it does.

This is still my choice verses a

free motion foot.

I have more control.

For tiny pieces like this,

the stitch length is set at 1.5 to allow those small turns.

Some stitching during outline added some details.

Went with red thread instead of black.

But for the smile......some black hand stitching

using regular thread and embroidery outline back stitching

with a couple of couching stitches.

Since the background was a solid heavy batik,

the usual drier sheet for backing wasn't needed.

This piece was directly stitched to the edge of the card

with the red thread also.

For a while now,

I've chosen to stitch the various pieces of fabric to

a background and not the card.

It provides a much neater look on the inside of the card,

because all you see on the inside is the

stitching around the edge of the card.

Since I found out everyone saves their cards,

I sign and date them.

A final trim which is easy for me to do with these scissors

rather than a rotary cutter.

Tuesday Tutorial~ Hexie Hand Stitched PATRIOT SCARF

It is a great year to make a patriot scarf to wear for the 250 celebration. I wore mine to the Quilt of Valor Awards this past May. (See some of the quilts here.)

Here is my hand stitched hexagon version.

Several 1.5 inch (side measurement) hexies were

cut from the quilt scraps.

Three rows of 30 hexies were stitched together.

This was a great lap project while watching TV.

One end was a triangle,

and the other end was a straight edge.

I hand stitched the triangle end closed.

Then I turned it inside out.

I used the Hidden Ladder stitch (found here) to close the straight edge

so the stitches wouldn't show.

I did not iron it.
I've enjoyed wearing it.

Tuesday Tutorial: 2nd Daughter's Bday Card 2026

After I finished the quilt for my daughter's up and coming new grand daughter, I made her a belated birthday card from the tiny leftover scraps.

You got a sneak peek of the quarter inch hexies HERE. This post offers a few more details.

I call it a quarter inch hexagon, because the finished edges are a quarter inch. The actual template has half inch sides. Anyway, in comparison to my thumb you can see how big it is.

Tracing and cutting isn't too hard.

It would be difficult to use a rotary cutter.

Still using the "Grandmother's Flower Garden" pattern,

the first round wasn't too tedious.

It only took 2 to 3 stitches in a seam.

First stitch with a knot is a back stitch,

and last stitch is a back stitch finished with a tie off.

Using a dryer sheet for foundation,

odd scrap pieces were overlapped to

show raw edges

and pinned using my tiny pins.

I can't believe I used to make garments with them,

because that was the only size sewing pins back in the day.

They are invaluable for working with tiny pieces.

Each visible raw edge was stitched around.

The background piece was trimmed to be

slightly larger than the cover of the card stock card

which was half of a sheet then folded in half.

The finished hand stitched

Grandmother's Flower Garden Flower

was machine stitched onto the background.

I enjoyed seeing and hearing her reaction.

"Grandmother's Flower Garden"

A 36 in x 36 in approx quilt

for my new Great Grand Daughter.

Hand pieced and quilted.

I've attempted a few by hand back in the 1980s.

This is my first one completely finished.

4. Extra time was put into adding pieces to square up the quilt.

Quilt was sandwiched with batting &

backing (which was machine stitched together).

Then layers safety pinned together.

No shots were taken.

5. Hand quilting

6. Binding was sewn by machine for first step,

then hand binded second step like many have been done on this blog.

I made a label for the quilt and hand stitched it to the back.

How to make a label.

When I gift a quilt,

I try to make a pillow case or bag to present the quilt.

My grand daughter tells me she likes the bags as much as the gifts.

She reuses them a lot, which is what I hope for.

There was just enough of the flower fabric and flower center and binding

to make the bag.

And of course with a scrap tag.

Many at the shower said tags didn't come on gift bags anymore.

Should I make some for Christmas gifts?

Sorry I covered up her smile.

I believe she was happy with the colors.

They are often found in her home.

Lots of the new baby clothes were of the peachy orange color.

The length of the side of these hexagons

are one fourth inch.

I used slightly less than a quarter inch seam.

Each seam only took 3 very small stitches.

Can you guess what I made?

He has ownership in race horses.

I did a search online for

"Black line clip art horse"

Traced an outline from my phone screen.

Added some "hair" lines.

Pinned the paper to the fabric.

Set my stitch length at 1.5.

Stitched on the drawn lines.

Tore the paper off.

You can see a couple of spots of paper

I didn't get off.

I decided to leave them for texture.

Then sewed the fabric to card stock around the edge

matching thread color to the fabric.

Just type in "dog clipart" (for my dog loving daughter) into a search engine and you get several images to give you ideas.

There was one close to this idea, but I gave it a bit of a twist to try to be my own. Thanks to the person that had this one line idea.

FYI, years ago I took a 101 art class for my elementary degree. We learned about several types of art. Two that I remember were Pointillism and Single Line Art. I wondered then, who really uses those? Guess what? They do come in handy for fiber art.

Stitch length 1.5 to tear away paper more easily.

I still like the control with the straight foot

instead of the free motion.

According to my research,

A "Grandmother's Flower Garden" consists of

2 rounds making a flower,

set together with one other fabric.

The days of my grandmother, set their flowers apart

with white.

Today, any color is used.

I chose this peach color that new Mommy's today

seem to like.

I was short of fabric for 5 hexies.

I did have fabric to piece 5 of them together.

It was common for our grandmother's to

piece together pieces,

because they usually made these

Flower gardens with fabric of old clothes.

This is what was left over.

Even though they look like large pieces,

they actually were not big enough to cut a whole hexie.

Now to even out the edges.

The hardest part, because it twists my brain.

Each night I go to bed,

I tell myself I'll have the top done in another day.

Somehow that doesn't happen.

The top was to be done in my plans by April 30!

I need to have it hand quilted by May 24.

Will it happen?
