I sure miss my old Tivo, DirecTV cut ties with them some years back, I'm now forced to use the DVR they supply :/ That's unless I change cable providers, which may be coming soon.

Tivo has unveiled it's new "Tivo premiere" and it sure does make me want my Tivo UI back.

This made me feel young.

The average social network user is 37 years old.
LinkedIn, with its business focus, has a predictably high average user age; 44.
The average Twitter user is 39 years old.
The average Facebook user is 38 years old.
The average MySpace user is 31 years old.
Bebo has by far the youngest users, as witnessed earlier, with an average age of 28.

Olympic hockey and the NHL

I enjoyed watching the Olympic hockey matches, but after all the attention it gained it left me wondering if the NHL will now have more of a following? This could work both ways, on one hand it's sure to gain more attention to the NHL. On the other hand, I'm not sure if the NHL can match the quality of play it displayed during the Olympics.

Chatroulette fun

I went and had my turn on Chatroulette last week...

Decided to post up some images tonight and share some links to other sites that are gathering these images, some of which may be NSFW, much like the site itself.

If you haven't experienced the site, brace yourself.

I'll take a stab at summing up my experience with a percentage of types of people on at any given time:

25% perverts (making it NSFW)
15% dressed up wearing masks or full costumes
15% with sign's asking to see various female body parts
15% just plain bored/normal
10% goofing off with some type of cam effect (this was me)
10% party goers drinking and laughing
5% streaming a video of some sort
5% still images or gif's

Half the time you'll get a muted cam or a blank screen, but the simplicity of the site includes just clicking "next" to view another cam. You also have the option of reporting offending users and chatting. That's all that's to it.

For the most part this site had me laughing for a while and the ability to make people laugh was worthwhile. If you're bored or feel like just getting a few laughs, click away! But please make sure the kids are in bed or you're not at work.

A recent update says " Update:
Connecting might take a while (service is a little overloaded, but nothing too bad, and in a few days all delays should be removed as I get new servers).
I have also been experimenting with new report system. CR should be clean from bad stuff now

So maybe the report system has helped lower the perv's... but I'm sure they'll still be on there. Also seems to not connect as well. This is most likely due to an increasing number of users.

Using Google Buzz on a unsupported Android device

I have the Sprint HTC Hero, which currently is running 1.5

I visit https://m.google.com/app/buzz?force=1#~buzz:view=following from my browser and it will find my location. Find my nearby buzz, along with the people I follow. I can comment and like. Posting seems to only work when I remove my location though.

Features I'm missing (that I know of):

Posting with my location
Voice Posting
Google Maps with layers

Overall I'm very happy with being able to view all my incoming Buzz and viewing nearby Buzz is a big bonus!

This will hold me over until I get the 2.1 update for my HTC Hero. So if you have been enjoying Buzz on your desktop, and have an Android device that is lower then 2.0, give this a try!

Some notes:

I had to enable GPS to find my location (even though I have my location settings set to find my location using network and wifi).

When trying to post with my location it will seem to go through and return to my buzz stream and will hang at "posting..."

Let me know what works or doesn't work for you.

Just found this site tonight. I really like the idea of this and want my blog to be based around this type of idea. Open discussion on any topic. I suppose my blog title here may be a bit misleading. Topic's don't have to be trending, but rather create a good discussion on any topic.

Someday I'll get this blog right. Eventually, I'd like to create a social site based on questions and ideas... Sort of like Yahoo answers, but where ideas evolve, not questions that are resolved.

I spend more time on trying to put this blog together then posting. I'll get to the point where I'm happy with it... but this blog is far from finished.

Google Buzz - Why Email based and is this really Facebook's demise? (Updated)

With the recent release of Buzz, It has my attention and I'm ready to share my thoughts on my experience using it so far, and some speculation going around about Google's Buzz!

Why I think they are targeting email...

Google is clearly not trying to go head on with Facebook or Twitter, they just want to be the best web-mail out there, thus why you need a Gmail account.

I don't think it should be compared to Twitter. Buzz is more personal and better equipped for discussions and conversations, yes it does share some similarities with Twitter by the way it is consumed. Twitter for me has become like TV, its a semi-
interactive celeb-reality show. I interact with friends on Facebook.

At some point most people will check their email (who would use an @myspace.com or @facebook.com* for primary email?), for most of us it's some form of web based email. Google now offers a more interactive email service then any other web based email providers with the addition of Buzz.

I've read plenty of speculation that Buzz is competing with Facebook...

Facebook is very personal, you share a lot directly and indirectly about yourself. For Buzz to compete it will have to be over the long haul. Buzz is social networking, but lacks that personal touch Facebook users are accustom to.

Look at how MySpace (now a hub for comedians and bands) has fallen off. The average person doesn't bother with more then just Facebook, and only about 20% of my friends from Facebook view Twitter, never-mind post. I think 20% is being generous too. People won't be ready for another social app, they can't even handle the new layout in Facebook without panic, how many "I hate the new Facebook" messages have you seen over the years?

I'd think Google's vision is set farther ahead on this type of project then competing for users. I'm not sure where the source of these "Buzz wants to rival insert social site here" comes from, but if Google thinks that? It's not going to happen with Buzz by itself.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Google Wave or parts of it make its way into Buzz or vice-versa. Maybe its time for Google to do something different with Reader as well. Sure it's functional, but could be displayed a lot nicer. Checking your email, reading your news/feeds, and interacting with friends all in one place sounds great. But it's not going to topple Facebook anytime soon, nor do I think that's what Google has in mind with Buzz.

Buzz is still in it's infancy stages, I'd love to see it gain popularity. I'm sure there's plenty more to come from Google, I recently started using Wave with friends, which IMO is more advanced then Buzz. To me, Buzz is just another feed aggregator with the ability to comment, much like FriendFeed.

My Advice for Buzz...

Slow and steady. Make sure the mobile platform is there to view and post with ease, and integrate Wave and Reader. Please don't abandon the project too early.

That could of been a base for Buzz, but the choice to go email based makes it feel fresh and may prove to be a smart idea, despite my initial rash thoughts. I had issues with it being only Gmail based, I don't know many of my friends or families email addresses, and willing to bet that less then half of them use Gmail. I can envision this starting slowly, and it will be interesting to see how it develops over the years.

To answer my own question's and leave you with another question:

It's obvious to why its email based, they want more Gmail users. Ive used it ever since Hotmail and I've never turned back.

Facebook is still growing, this is a small speedbump for them. Google watched Facebook buy Friendfeed for 47.5M. Maybe Google thought that Facebook seen Friendfeed as a threat? I used Friendfeed to post updates to my Facebook, had to stop using it cause it would post into news feeds and was to much noise to let out, I only wanted it on my wall. Which Facebook needs to re-address that situation with to many app's spitting into my feed, we need more control/filters. Facebook is for the masses of people you do know. Following people on Buzz will be just a few people u want to hear about in the tech world, much like how my Friendfeed became and was never a threat to Facebook IMO.

Both Google and Facebook are taking back control of these activity streams, Why is this?
