Description of the Position
Applications are invited for a PhD position, working under supervision of Klaus R. Liedl in the Department of
Theoretical Chemistry at University of Innsbruck as part of the Marie Curie Training Network NANODRUG. The
NANODRUG Network is funded by the European Commission and comprises of 13 teams from different
countries. This Network will provide an exceptional training platform for young researchers to acquire a variety of
interdisciplinary and intersectorial skills in the area of nanomedicine.
The project in Innsbruck will focus on computational studies of the nanoparticles' interactions occurring during
their application to patients (e.g., computer simulations of membrane permeation by nanoparticles and drug
interactions with nanoparticles). The successful candidate will attend regular training courses and international
meetings and will be expected to go on three secondments to other teams of the NANODRUG Network.
The starting date for the contract is expected to be April/May 2012. The position is available for a fixed term
period of 36 month. The successful candidate will register for the doctoral programme Chemistry at University of
Innsbruck. The appointment will be on a fixed gross salary of € 34.416,20 per annum (for 40 working hours per
week).
Requirements for Candidates
Candidates must have a master or diploma degree in Chemistry with strong background in physical and
computational chemistry. Experience in application of computer simulations and programming/scripting skills are
of advantage. We expect sufficient knowledge of English (both written and spoken). Knowledge of the German
language is beneficial but not required.
Due to this project being part of a Marie Curie Initial Training Network, eligibility rules apply. Applicants must not
be nationals of the state in which the project and research is to take place – in this case Austria. Applicants also
must not have lived, worked or studied in Austria for more than 12 months in the last 3 years. To qualify as “Early
Stage Researchers” applicants should be within the first 5 years of their research careers.

Postdoctoral research positions are available immediately in the research groups of Professors Thomas D. Sewell and Donald L. Thompson in the Department of Chemistry at The University of Missouri-Columbia. The focus areas of the research are:

• Development and application of MD-based theoretical and computational methods for accurate predictions of vibrational spectroscopy and relaxation dynamics in organic and ionic materials, with particular emphasis on the terahertz region.

• Development and application of MD force fields for simulating organic and ionic materials and interfaces subjected to extreme conditions of temperature, stress, and strain rate.

• Development and application of dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) methods for simulating reactive materials under shock wave loading.

Demonstrated experience in one or more of these emphasis areas is required, as is code-developer-level experience with F90, C++, or a related computer language. Experience with Linux cluster system administration is highly desirable. Individuals lacking code development skills or whose experience is limited to performing calculations using unmodified off-the-shelf codes will not be considered.

PhD for Metallic and biomimetic Nano-Catalysts for Glucose Fuel Cells

PhD fellowship (funding secured for 3 years) is immediately available, only for an applicant who lives in Germany or in EU countries, in the research training group (Graduiertenkolleg GRK 1322 „Micro Energy Harvesting“), supported by the German research foundation (DFG) in connection with University of Freiburg.

Responsibilities: for B1 project entitled “Metallic and biomimetic Nano-Catalysts for Glucose Fuel Cells”. The study will use water in oil microemulsion method to prepare monometallic or bimetallic nanoparticles supported on different carbon nanostructured materials in order to utilize as nanocatalysts for one-compartment biofuel cell applications. The synergistic effect of bimetallic or nanohybrid system can be utilized to have tolerant catalysts in this mixed-reactant fuel cell. Mechanistic investigation of reaction products detected by the chromatographic analysis will give insight into fundamental aspects of catalysis, allowing comparison different catalysts in terms of high electrocatalytic efficiency in physiological condition.
Innovative research may be focused at the nanoscale or molecular level. Examples of possible research emphases include the following areas: nanomaterials, biocatalysis, immobilization techniques such as layer-by-layer self assembly of enzymes/polymerized electron mediator on electrode surface, electrochemical engineering, and nanotechnology.

Mechanistic modelling of restructuring behaviour of colloidal aggregates
Colloidal particles are submicron particles which are usually suspended in a continuous phase (liquid or gas). They have unique properties due to their high ration of surface area to volume. The Priority Programme “Colloidal Process Engineering” (SPP 1273) funded by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) aims at fundamental understanding of the effects when processing colloidal suspensions and at exploiting these effects for tailored process and product design. Considering solid-liquid dispersions as they arise from precipitation and crystallization processes in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, there is significant interest in controlling the structure of colloidal aggregates, because it affects downstream processing characteristics (e.g. solid-liquid separation) and the end-use properties of the product. Under flow conditions, as they typically arise in industrial settings, the aggregates are affected by restructuring. The objective of this project is to asses! s the behaviour of colloidal aggregates in a shear environment. The project will be conducted in close cooperation with Professor Marek Behr (Computational Analysis of Technical Systems, RWTH Aachen).

A qualified candidate is interested in applied interdisciplinary research and has a Master’s or equivalent degree in a relevant scientific or technical subject, such as chemical engineering, physics, chemistry, computational or mechanical engineering. Previous experience in scientific computing, modelling of complex systems, colloidal systems is a plus. Applications from candidates who already hold a PhD degree and want to gain further qualification in a PostDoc-phase are especially welcome.

Our offer

The position is expected to be filled in the second half of 2011 and is for a fixed term for 2 years. The successful candidate will be pursuing a PhD. The payment will be in the framework to the German public salary system.

AFS is pleased to offer financial awards for three undergraduate or graduate students in support of their attendance at the AFS 2011 Annual Meeting. The meeting is scheduled for 4-8 September 2011 in Seattle, WA. The amount of each award will be $500 and will include a one-year membership in the Estuaries Section. The Estuaries Section will fund one award, and the Southern Association of Marine Laboratories (SAML) will fund two. For the Estuaries Section award, priority will be given to students who are presenting their own research at the conference (in an oral or poster presentation), are AFS Estuaries Section members, and have a demonstrated financial need. For the two SAML funded awards, in addition to the criteria listed above, preference will be given to those students representing a SAML institution. Recipients of the SAML sponsored awards will also be required to provide a brief, one-page report to SAML regarding his/her research and how the funds were used. CHM Postdoctoral Research Associate Position at NIST CNST

Applicants are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Nanomanufacturing Measurement and Process Control of Diblock Copolymers.

The objectives of the research are to develop models to simulate the electromagnetic response of diblock materials as a function of domain size and morphology in both the near- and far-field regimes and to apply those models to the development of non-contact, high-speed, optical measurement methods for nanostructure characterization in roll-to-roll manufacturing.

The project is part of a collaboration between the Center for Hierarchical Manufacturing (CHM) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology (CNST) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. The successful applicant will be employed by UMass while the research will take place primarily at CNST, but it is anticipated that frequent travel between UMass and NIST will be needed to facilitate the collaboration.

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. degree (or have submitted his/her doctoral thesis) in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or related fields and have a good track record of research in the interaction of light with nanostructures. A good publication record, experience working in multidisciplinary teams, demonstrated ability for scientific accomplishment with minimal direct guidance, and ability to travel between UMass and NIST are required. Salary will be approximately $60k/year.

Cellular interactions with mechanically nanostructured and chemically functionalized surfaces,
and substrates with stiffness gradients have been well‐studied for understanding cellular mechanotransduction; however, these approaches generally neglect electrostatics and electromechanical coupling, which are always present in biological systems. The ultimate objective of this project is to use charge‐functionalized and mechanosensitive surfaces to address and understand the role of charge and electromechanically‐active substrates on surface‐bound

Project
We will use substrates with locally reversible surface charge (i.e., organic and inorganic ferroelectric materials with reversible polarization), which can be charge‐patterned from the length

The charge will be exploited for charge‐patterning‐directed self‐assembly, adsorption of proteins and molecules, and local reactivity. Local charge conditions can be further modified using thermal or optical excitation, thus allowing both static and dynamic effects of the patterning on protein adsorption and chemical reactivity to be determined. The cellular response to charge and protein‐patterned surfaces will also be investigated, broadening our understanding of mechano‐ and electrotransduction. This research is expected to have a significant impact on biomimetic design of engineered tissues and implants.

Required Qualifications:

Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Fellowships aim to develop leadership, address priority regional development issues, and build partnerships and linkages between Australian organisations and partner organisations in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East.

The ALA Fellowships program engages with a wide cross-section of the Australian community on aid delivery issues and priorities for development. Through ALA Fellowships, Australian organisations have the opportunity to build and strengthen links with organisations in developing countries by offering professional development opportunities in Australia.

The goal of the ALA Fellowships program is to develop appropriately trained current and aspiring leaders in priority areas, who, in the short to medium term, will be in a position to advance key regional policy objectives and increase institutional capacity of partner countries. ALA Fellowships are designed to complement individual bilateral country programs by offering flexible fellowship placements which address current and emerging needs at the country, sub-regional and regional levels.

ALA Fellowships do not lead to academic qualifications. Instead, they are designed to provide short term opportunities for study, research and professional attachment programs in Australia, delivered by Australian organisations, to nominated fellows from eligible countries.

Through ALA Fellowships, Australian organisations can apply for funding to support a range of professional development activities that will build expertise and leadership capacity in eligible countries.

Applications are accepted from Australian organisations only; individuals are not eligible to apply.

ALA Fellowships support a wide variety of areas and sectors. Australian organisations are encouraged to design programs that address priority areas, including disability and development, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development and water and sanitation

Eligibility

Australian organisations

Applications are restricted to Australian organisations that can demonstrate ongoing linkages with overseas counterpart organisations in eligible countries.

Examples of eligible Australian organisations include NGOs, academic institutions, research organisations, business, industry, media, professional associations and Government agencies.

Overseas counterpart organisations and individual fellows must be sponsored by an Australian organisation, and may not apply directly for an ALA Fellowship. They may, however, initiate contact with an Australian organisation to explore the latter’s interest in applying for Fellowship funding.

Fellows

Prospective fellows identified by Australian organisations must be from an eligible country.

Typically, they will be professionals already in leadership positions or have a potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes.

Individuals cannot apply for an ALA Fellowship directly. Individuals may be eligible for other Australia Awards.

How to apply for ALA Fellowship funding

ALA Fellowships are awarded twice yearly through a competitive selection process. The ALA Fellowships submission guidelines provide detailed information on the application process.

Application process

Australian organisations can apply for ALA Fellowship funding through a competitive grant process. Important selection criteria include:

1. the likely impact of the program or activities

2. the leadership potential and quality of nominated fellows to assume leadership roles and influence policy reform and development outcomes

3. the level of support from the overseas counterpart organisation(s) and the sustainability of linkages between the Australian organisation and the overseas counterpart organisation(s) and fellows

4. the capacity of the Australian organisation to support the program or activities.

A PhD position is available from 1st October 2011 to work with Dr Klaus von Haeften (Physics) and Professor Andrew Ellis (Chemistry) at the University of Leicester, UK. The person appointed will participate in an exciting and innovative new project employing ultrafast laser pump-probe techniques to explore superfluid effects in helium clusters and in helium nanodroplets. The work is largely experimentally-driven and will include laboratory work in the UK, as well as the possibility of experiments in other countries using major ultrafast laser facilities. In addition to the specific experiments, the student will be expected to take part in instrument development work associated with the project, data acquisition software development, and in the analysis of the collected data. You will also liaise with theoretical physics colleagues in the interpretation of the experimental findings.

The project will appeal to an ambitious graduate in Physics or Chemistry with an interest in molecular physics. A minimum qualification of a 2.1 MSci degree from the UK or equivalent is essential.
