Graduate Assistantship (Ph.D.) in forest restoration at Texas Tech University, USA

The Department of Natural Resources Management at Texas Tech University is seeking a highly motivated, talented and hard-working graduate student (Ph.D.).

The field research portions of their dissertation will be conducted in north-central New Mexico in collaboration with faculty and students with the New Mexico Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.

The selected student will be expected to develop and focus their dissertation research on elk ecology, within already existing larger project goals of the influence of large-scale forest restoration treatments on vegetation and elk resource selection, space use and foraging ecology.

The selected student will begin the graduate program in the Department of Natural Resources Management at Texas Tech University for the Fall 2015 semester. The Ph.D. graduate stipend will be ~$20,000/year and will include insurance and out-of-state tuition waiver.

Requirements:

Candidates must have a M.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology or a related field, a GPA: 3.3, competitive GRE scores (300 verbal + quantitative), and a valid U.S driver’s license.

Prior experience conducting field research on large mammals, collecting vegetation data, and working in remote locations and experience with radio telemetry is preferred.

Use of GIS technology and geospatial analyses experience is also preferred. Field work will require hiking 3-6 miles/day over rough terrain and occasional camping in the backcountry. The selected student will be required to present research results at professional conferences, publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific publications, and assist with preparation of project reports and grant proposals.

Post-doc position at Avian Science Center - Wildlife Biology Program University of Montana

The Avian Science Center, part of the Wildlife Biology Program at the University of Montana (UM), invites applicants for a post-doctoral research associate (RA).

They seek to hire a systems ecologist broadly trained in spatial statistics and demographic modeling and estimation.

Successful applicant will examine spatio-temporal patterns in wetland dynamics as they relate to sage-grouse populations and their mesic summer habitat requirements. Study system is the 165- million acre sage-steppe ecosystem across 11 western states. Requisite datasets have been prepared for analysis including 30 years of spatial wetland data and long-term sage-grouse count data and population trends. As such, demonstrated experience in remote sensing and GIS expertise is preferred but not required.

RA is expected to publish findings, present at professional conferences and agency meetings, and transcribe findings into management alternatives to improve conservation delivery.

Position will be based in Missoula on the UM campus for 18 months (with possibility for extension). RA will collaborate with Drs. Victoria Dreitz and David Naugle at UM, and with Patrick Donnelly, spatial ecologist with the Intermountain West Joint Venture in Missoula.

This RA is part of a larger partnership between UM and the USDA-led Sage Grouse Initiative, a highly targeted and science-based approach for implementing wildlife conservation through sustainable ranching www.sagegrouseinitiative.com.

The Alaska Region of the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service will be hiring numerous temporary/seasonal Biological Science Technicians for the 2015 field season to work on a variety of fisheries-related studies.

Appointments will extend from three to six months, and will be filled at the GS 4–7 level (~$16.76/hr. to ~$23.21/hr.; includes locality pay and cost of living allowance).
Projects involve monitoring salmon runs using fish weirs, digital video equipment, and sonar; conducting abundance estimates of resident fish species; documenting fish movement using radio telemetry; sampling water quality; and performing fish habitat inventories.
Technicians will perform field work at various locations throughout the state, including remote areas in the Alaskan bush.
Travel to field camps is primarily by small aircraft or boat.
Please note that these positions are for the adventurous as harsh weather, an abundance of biting insects, and remote living conditions can be challenging. MS Graduate Research Assistantship in Ecology || Utah State University

The Lake Ecology Laboratory is looking for a curious and driven MS student to join us in beautiful Logan, Utah to explore the ecology and conservation of fishes throughout the Intermountain West.

More than 20% of the world’s freshwater fishes are either extinct or in decline with more than 35% of the freshwater fishes in the United States classified as either imperiled or extinct. In the western United States, invasive species have been recognized as the agent limiting the recovery of 60% of the imperiled fishes. June sucker (shown below) are endemic to Utah Lake, UT (shown above) and are one such imperiled fish species. A recent invasion by an apex predator fish species, northern pike, is raising concerns about the impact of this invasion on June sucker recovery efforts and the future food web structure of this ecosystem. The overarching goal of this study is to determine whether northern pike predation will negatively impact the efforts to restore and protect June sucker. We will evaluate the threat of northern pike predation on the recovery and survival of June sucker in Utah Lake and identify ways, if possible, to mitigate this potential threat.

Responsibilities:

The prospective graduate student will develop their field-based MS thesis within the overall framework of this study.
The student will have opportunities test whether a northern pike invasion influences the restoration of endangered June sucker using descriptive statistics, statistical models, and biological models.

The Lake Ecology Laboratory is looking for a curious and driven PhD or MS student to join us in beautiful Logan, Utah to study the ecology and conservation of fishes throughout the Intermountain West.

Drought is often a primary effect of climate change and is of particular concern for lakes and reservoirs throughout the western United States. Understanding the effects of drought on lake ecosystems, therefore, is critical. Bear Lake, UT/ID (shown above) holds a unique assemblage of endemic, cold-water fishes including sculpin, cisco, whitefishes, and Bonneville cutthroat trout (picture below) as well as introduced lake trout. Our goal is to understand how drought-induced reductions in lake level alter critical littoral habitat in lakes and reservoirs in the Intermountain West and to test whether changes in littoral habitat influence the cold-water fish community. All of these cold-water species directly or indirectly depend on littoral habitat for spawning or prey production. Ultimately, we want to understand how to better manage these fishes in a changing climate. While this work will expand to other lakes and reservoirs, the research

will initially focus on Bear Lake.

Climate System Modelling Research Fellow Position in Denmark

The Danish Meteorological Institute has a vacancy for a Research Fellow in the field of high resolution Arctic regional climate system modelling. The fellowship position is for a fixed period of 3 years, and will be based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The candidate's focus will be on performance of the model over Greenland and with a special emphasis of representing the local climate at the east cost of Greenland, in particular the complex Scoresbysund setting.
Focus will be on local surface mass balance over the ice sheet and the Renland glacier in particular. The work will contribute to the development of a dynamic high resolution system model of the Greenland ice sheet, the coastal regions and interactions with the surrounding ocean, and to study changes in the ice sheet as a consequence of changes in Arctic climate and sea ice.

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science at the University of Jyvaskyla seeks applicants to two PhD students position focusing on a paleolimnological approach for examining carbon pathways in high latitude lake food webs. The positions will start in 2015 and be based in Jyvaskyla, Finland.

The objective of the applied PhD student's project is to improve our understanding of climatic controls on carbon transport from terrestrial sources to aquatic systems, ecological impacts of carbon-driven lake optics, and carbon utilization by different functional groups of aquatic fauna in a long-term temporal perspective and under natural climate fluctuations. The project will contribute to unravel the relationships between climate change and lake food web functioning in environmentally sensitive high latitude lakes, and provide information on natural fluctuations of lake functioning as a reference for future assessments.

The successful candidate will carry out paleolimnological research in high latitude lakes in Finnish Lapland and northern Canada.

Specifically, the PhD project will utilize spatial and temporal sedimentary datasets with the aims to examine species-environment relationships with a focus on carbon-driven lake properties, reconstruct past lake-water conditions related to terrestrial carbon input, and clarify the contributions of terrestrial and aquatic carbon sources to aquatic food webs. The research methods include microfossil analysis of aquatic invertebrates, paleoenvironmental modeling, and carbon stable isotope analysis. The PhD candidate will be part of the paleoaquatic research group and supervised by Dr. Liisa Nevalainen (Univ. Jyvaeskylae), Prof. Milla Rautio (Univ. Quebec Chicoutimi), and Dr. Tomi Luoto (Univ. Helsinki & Univ. Jyvaeskylae).

The Mountain Ecosystems and Climate Research teams at the Institute for Forest, Snow, and Landscape Research seek a Postdoctoral Researcher for a project entitled "Warmer temperatures, less snow, earlier plant development? Using a long-term meteorological network to unravel temperature and snow effects on mountain vegetation." The position will have a duration of two years starting in January 2015, and be based in Davos, Switzerland.

The project takes advantage of a unique and extensive set of climate monitoring stations in the Swiss Alps that provide c. 20 years of climate, snow, and plant growth data. Project leaders plan to extend the approach to other regions of the Alps or world. The successful applicant will investigate how temperatures and snow cover influence plant phenology along geographical gradients within the network of climate stations to determine how changed climate conditions such as accelerated snowmelt control phenology and the distribution of plants.

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) seeks fulltime Field Technicians. The primary work location is Fairbanks, Alaska, with support sites throughout Fairbanks.

NEON is a $430 million dollar observatory project dedicated to understanding how changes in climate, land use and invasive species impact ecology. For the next three decades NEON will collect a comprehensive range of ecological data on a continental scale across 20 eco-climatic domains representing US ecosystems. NEON will use cutting edge technology including an airborne observation platform that will capture images of regional landscapes and vegetation; mobile, re-locatable, and fixed data collection sites with automated ground sensors to monitor soil and atmosphere; and trained field crews who will observe and sample populations of diverse organisms and collect soil and water data. A leading edge cyber-infrastructure will calibrate, store and publish this information. The Observatory will grow to 300+ personnel and will be the first of its kind designed to detect and enable forecasting of ecological change at continental scales.

The awardees receive a copy of the Society's Desk Book, a certificate, and a year's membership in the Society. Their names and the names of their faculty advisors will appear in the Society's Newsletter (published in Applied Spectroscopy and available from the Coblentz Society and SAS websites). All awardees who attend the SciX conference will receive their award in person at a presentation during the poster session on Sunday evening by then Coblentz Society's president. Graduate Assistantships Available in Great Plains Fish Ecology, Spring 2014‏

Three research assistantships (PhD and MS) are available for spring semester, 2014, to work on patterns, drivers, and consequences of fish distribution and movement in Great Plains streams, rivers, and reservoirs. These opportunities interface basic ecology and applied fisheries/watershed management within a very active ecology community at Kansas State University in cooperation with progressive and interactive state resource managers.

Within the scope of the two funded projects, students will develop a basic ecology research project with management implications. These funded research areas are: (1) Controls on predator survival and related ecosystem effects, and (2) Coupled climate, cultivation, culture, and fish communities. More details are included on the attached flyer.

Projects will start January 1, 2014. The stipend is $21,000 per calendar year plus a tuition waiver. Applications received before October 15, 2013 will have the best chance for acceptance.

Postdoctoral position in atomic and molecular physics - Caen, France

A one-year postdoctoral position is available in the field of atomic and molecular physics in the Centre de Recherche sur les Ions, les Matériaux et la Photonique (CIMAP), in Caen (France). The position is funded by the “Plan Physique Cancer” (INCa/INSERM) in the framework of a collaboration between the CIMAP and the Institut de Physique Nucléaire de Lyon (IPNL).

Research project: Nowadays, ion beam cancer therapy is a powerful emergent technique used in cancer treatment, especially for deep-seated tumors. The advantages of ion beams with respect to conventional radiotherapy techniques based on photons and electrons are well known. They are due to the characteristic Bragg peak, the small lateral spreading and the increased relative radiobiological efficiency. However, a number of important scientific questions, especially related to DNA damage assessment at the molecular level, have not been resolved. We propose to study the fundamental processes occurring at the molecular levelduring the interaction of ions with small biological systems in the gas phase. We will measure the destruction rates of biomolecules governed by energy and charge transfer. Mass spectrometric analysis will be applied to obtain detailed insights into the fragmentation pathways of ion-induced radiation damage and the secondary electron production. The studies will be performed with isolated as well as nano-hydrated biomolecules to clarify the role of water molecules in the radiation damage process (direct and indirect effects). In addition, noble metal nanoparticles will be included in the target in order to elucidate their enhancing effect on the radio-biological efficiency of ion irradiation. To improve our understanding of the first steps of radiation damage induced by ionizing radiation, the experimental work will be supported by simulations of radical production by water radiolysis with and without nanoparticle included.

To apply

The candidate will further develop the experimental set-up and implement first experiments on ion collisions with biological complex systems in the gas phase. The candidate should have a PhD in Physics or Physical-Chemistry. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in instrument development, gas phase techniques and mass spectrometry. Wyoming EPSCoR & Wyoming INBRE Undergraduate Research Fellowship for Fall 2013

Applications are being accepted from University of Wyoming undergraduates in the biological, physical and social sciences; engineering; mathematics; in certain areas of health sciences; and in science and mathematics education for research fellowship awards to fund independent research projects.

The stipend will be $750 for the Fall Fellowship and is intended to support undergraduate fellows during an independent research activity directed by a University of Wyoming faculty member. Literature reviews and survey research are not ordinarily considered for these awards.

The Wyoming INBRE UW Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program provides support for outstanding undergraduate students in the biological and physical sciences or mathematics to work on biomedical related research projects.

The Wyoming NSF EPSCoR Fellowship Program is designed to support undergraduate students in biological sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, mathematics, certain areas of health sciences, and science and mathematics education.

Who Should Apply

Undergraduates in the sciences, mathematics, engineering, certain areas of health sciences (disciplines supported by the NSF) and students in science and mathematics education who will complete their Bachelor’s degree at the University of Wyoming. Preference will be given to students in their junior year who intend to enter careers in research. First generation college students, minorities and women are especially encouraged to apply.
