Hammocks for Special Needs Children

Over the summer, we were very pleased to supply a number of our Garden Hammocks to the Phoenix Special School in East London. This is a school for children aged between 2-16 years with language and communication difficulties and severe learning difficulties, including those on the autistic spectrum.

This isn't the first time we have provided hammocks for both children and adults with special needs. On this occasion, however, it was our pleasure to deal with Gabriella, a play leader of great compassion and kindness and provide various shapes and sizes of hammocks and hammock chairs to accommodate the very individual needs of pupils.

Together with the hammocks, we were able to furnish the school with an array of suspension kit components to allow swinging, spinning and even a little bouncing!

And for the first time some of our Garden Hammocks in Natural have gone to the school's Art Department to be used as canvasses for artwork. Paint your own hammock - what a wonderful idea!

We wish everyone there the very best.

Chiggy the Hammock Star

This is 'Chiggy in one of our All Weather Hammock Chairs .' He is a 'grey' German Shepherd Dog and we re-homed him a few years ago from Battersea Dogs& Cats , Home. Possessed of an unorthodox character, one might go so far as to say that he was as daft as a brush. Compared to our other Shepherd dog (Biff) Chiggy was...still in the elementary stages of dog evolution.

Now reading 'The Dog Whisperer' books I see all the mistakes we made...

Having said all that, he made the most fantastic hammock model.

The English Bull Terriers' Bed of Choice

Back to our 'animals in hammocks' theme...Here's another lovely scene sent to us by one of our customers. The lady in question is happily esconsced in one of our Single Hammocks with her English Bull Terrier who seems to be having a very hard time of it! ...It's a dog's life...

This hammock has was suspended across a corner between 2 walls in a small walled yard using one of our Eye-bolt Suspension Kits. The eyebolts have a tapering screw thread together with masonry plugs which means that they can be fitted into wood without the plugs or, solid brick, stone or concrete with them. The Kit also comes with 2 snap hooks to connect the eyebolt to the rope eye of the hammock. When it's time to go in, just unclip your hammock and leave the fixings ready for the next time.

If anyone out there has a hammock/animal shot they'd like to share, we'd love to see it.

We were delighted last year when Julia Sanders of 'Woodland Tipis' contacted us to purchase some of our Rope Hammocks for their 14 acre natural woodland campground in Herefordshire. Offering accommodation in the most luxurious tipis and yurts I have ever seen, Woodland Tipis is an ideal camping holiday minus the toil!

This year they decided to try out some of our All-Weather Rod Hammocks in Tikking and these have proved an even greater success.

Mexican Hammock Cat

On the theme of 'animals in hammocks' let us continue as we have begun...This image of their gorgeous tabby cat in one of our Mexican Hammocks was sent to us by one of our customers a few years ago. It's amazing that kitty could get in on her own without capsizing and never once tangled her claws in the miles of string netting that forms the hammock. Apparently the hammock was kitty's bed of choice and it was hard for the humans to get a look in.

This is a compact and, dare we say, bijoux little number that looks great in even the smallest garden.

Hammock Time At Last....

The sun is out, the ice is melting and the flowers are coming into bloom....which means....HAMMOCK TIME IS HERE AGAIN!!

Now, don't be mean with yourself, the budget wasn't that bad. We've been tightening our belts until there are no more notches left so it must be time for some R&R. What better way to to pander (or as an Israeli friend wrote to me 'punder' yourself) yourself that in a hammock. Lie back, gently rock and forget it's all happening. Yes, only in your hammock can you truly get off the world.

You won't find a much better hammock to do this in than one of our Garden Jumbo hammocks. Our Jumbo Fringed Hammock comes in handwoven chunky natural cotton with deep lattice work fringing for that touch of luxury. Will someone peel me a grape please...

What a breath of fresh air it is to see our hammocks used in and around the workplace. This is a video of Eric, our mechanic, who loves his hammock so much that he takes it to work.

Eric is a large fellow in both girth and height, so it is a delight to see him snuggling down like a baby in one of our Garden Jumbo Hammocks.

Garden Hammocks

Out in the garden, there's only one way to relax - in a hammock of course. There's something about being so weightless and gently rocking from side to side that soothes the soul.

...And, caring as much as we do about your soul, we have a very extensive and colourful range of hammocks just for the garden called, rather descriptively we feel, 'Garden Hammocks.' These are made from deliciously thick, chunky cotton to give some shelter from the occasional North wind as well as shade from the less occasional baking sun.

You probably know, of course that these hammock are designed to be lain in diagonally, so they are like a sling.

Your back is nice and flat and your body forms a kind of human spreader bar to keep the fabric open - handy when you want to read the newspaper. If you lie the other way, end to end, the edges of the hammock close around you and you're restricted to something very small to read...like a take-away menu or a library card. Apart from that lying diagonally is so much more comfortable, it's almost impossible to stay awake to read anything...

Botanic Cushions

In this glorious nanosecond of weather, the urge to get out into the garden and tackle the forest of green is overwhelming. So it is that after a few hours of pulling plant hooligans out of the ground, you just can't beat a nice sit down and a cup of tea.

With this very idea in mind, we now stock a new range of garden hammock cushions called 'Botanic Cushions.'

These are designed with an eye on the garden and whether it's the trusty scatter or the deliciously plump size pillow, you won't find a prettier place to park your bot.

With names such as 'Fern' and 'Brambly' these are just the part in a British garden. Of course the very best place to be in your garden is in your hammock but if you can't spare time for that luxury then you might always just sit on the cushion and look at your hammock. Probably the next best thing...

The Wonders of Bamboo

It wasn't until FSC hardwood became so diffcult to get one's paws on that the concept of composite bamboo hammock stands entered our consciousness here at Handmade Hammocks.

Now, I know the mention of 'bamboo' immediately conjures up images of spindly garden apparatus or the sort of coffee tables found at the hairdresser.

This, however is not the sort of bamboo I am talking about. There is nothing spindly about this stuff, which has the density and weight of the equivalent size of hardwood and a significantly greater weight capacity. This makes it an ideal material for our adjustable hammock stands.

On top of these attributes, there are the equally positive environmental properties. Viz: a field of bamboo produces 50% more oxygen than the equivalent sized forest of hardwood; it replants itself after harvesting and is ready to re-harvest in 3-5 years ; the lateral root structure prevents soil erosion and it works well to detoxify the soil. All in all, a most versatile substance indeed.

Not bad...for a grass.

The Comemorative Royal Wedding Hammock

We're just wondering here at Handmade Hammocks whether we should invest in something a little special for the Big Day. One of our hammocks with the Royal Love Birds printed on...a head at each end joining hands across the middle or perhaps just the 2heads snuggled up together at one end? Well, it beats a biscuit tin I suppose.

The question is, do they have a hammock listed on their wedding present list and if so...why hasn't one of the friends and family purchased one from us yet? Even though we offer a same day dispatch and next working day delivery, if I may say, they are leaving it a little late. Still, if they buck up now and get their order in before Easter, there is always time I expect. We can always pull the stops out in the case of an emergency, that forgotten birthday, anniversary or, dare I say, wedding.

And, even if you aren't Royal and aren't getting married, a hammock is always a good idea. Hammocks for the leiges are equally popular and a splendid idea now that the garden has thawed out and the long-johns are in storage for a while. Just think, instead of visiting the garden in your duffle coat and wellies, only to put the bin out, you might be tempted now to lie out there and relax - like people do in warm places. Just a thought.

Mexican-Style Hammocks - They're So..... S-T-R-E-T-C-H-Y

It has been many years since I first lay in a Mexican hammock . Of course, I was in Mexico at the time and my Spanish was sketchy, so I didn't understand what they were trying to tell me about lying across the hammock.

As a result, I made the 2 cardinal mistakes of Mexican hammock suspension, I suspended the hammock without leaving any drop and I lay in it end to end. The result was far from comfortable. I felt like I was tied into a string bagette.

It was only after further limited Spanish communications I learned that the hammock should be suspended at a height with the ends close enough together to allow a lot of drop. The art is to lie across the hammock and never end to end.

Mexican-style hammocks are made from over a mile of cotton (or nylon) string. The weave is continuous without knots so that the end result is one huge and incredibly strong net that works like a concertina. Hold the sides of a Mexican hammock out and they will stretch to your full body length and probably beyond. When you lie across one of these hammocks the weave goes nice and tight and springy, making a wonderful support for your back.

If you feel like company a large Mexican-style hammock will hold up to 5 people and probably more - but after 5 it's just too squashy for comfort.

To add to it's list of virtues, this hammock packs down small for travel and can be washed in the machine (except always knot the brassos first to avoid spaghetti). They make a fantastic spare bed, are wonderful for parties and dogs like them too.

They really thought of everything when they designed this hammock. What a gem...
