Natural implies that the skin care product contains ingredients extracted from plants, earth, sea or animals. Examples would be essential oils extracted from botanicals, minerals such as mica, and zinc oxide which are found in mineral makeup, marine ingredients such as seaweed, or sea salt, or oils and other animal byproducts such as Emu oil which is made from the fat of an Emu bird.

Unfortunately, the term" natural" is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and thus the term "natural" is often used very loosely in labeling and extensively in marketing ploys by the skin care industry. Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not define the term natural or organic. In fact the USFDA does not approve cosmetics before going to the market. The responsibility of the safety of the cosmetic lies with the manufacturer. Except for color additives and those ingredients which are prohibited or restricted by regulation, the manufacturer may use any ingredient in a cosmetic provided that they are safe and properly labeled and can coin numerous terms when marketing the cosmetic that may or may not be true. You can read more about the regulation of cosmetics at the Food and Drug Administration website.

If you are considering purchasing natural skin care products consider these tips:

Read the label - many skin care companies use the term "Natural" when in reality many products contain less than 1% of a natural ingredient such as aloe Vera, or other essential oils as an example. The most prevalent ingredient will be listed at the top of the ingredient list and the least amount of an ingredient will be listed at the bottom. Therefore if you are buying an aloe Vera gel and aloe Vera is not listed at the top of the ingredient list, you are more than likely buying a gel containing an enormous amount of synthetic ingredients versus the natural ingredient of aloe Vera.

Question the product - Is there scientific proof or clinical testing that can substantiate the product claims? Are you paying more because the product is labeled natural? Is it really natural?

For those with sensitive skin it is best to avoid skin care product with fragrances, alcohol, FD and C colors, mineral oil and formaldehyde, however, mineral oil is in almost all skin care products and the more you use it the drier your skin becomes. Unfortunately many women continue to have irritated, dry, scaly, itchy or blotchy skin and jump from one chemical cosmetic to another trying to find the cure.

In short, always read the label on your skin care products and do skin patches test to avoid topical dermatitis or an allergic reaction. Of all the chemicals used in cosmetics, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has reported that nearly 900 are toxic - although other groups attack that figure as being far too conservative. Again, understanding the ingredients in your skin care products will provide a great advantage when shopping for a new lotion or cream.

For great skin care recipes visit Complete Skin Care Therapy and click on the Recipes tab.

This ebook is full of easy skin care recipes. It's not just my face that seems to dry out, my legs become dry and flaky and get really itchy. This unusually dry skin is a result of oil glands producing less oil due to the colder temperatures. Another factor is low humidity in the home and outdoors. There is no moisture available for your skin to absorb. These combined factors of less humidity and less oil production in the skin makes for dreadful dry, itchy skin.

It is not a problem figuring out what your skin needs - it needs moisture and extreme hydration to relieve the dryness and itchiness. The problem is finding a product that really hydrates and soothes the skin.

From my experience lotions loaded with fragrances seemed to do more harm than good. They actually made my legs itch more! I have tried Eucerin which worked for me as it does not contain fragrances which are known irritants for dry and/or sensitive skin and it seemed to lock in moisture. Get three bottles of Eucerin for only $10.75!

Additionally, I have tried various homemade treatments which have worked well and relived the dryness and itchiness on my legs.

Below are just a few of some natural ingredients that will relieve dry skin and they are easy on the environment too!

Almond oil, Olive oil or Vitamin E - oils have more staying power than lotions and really lock in the moisture. Apply to skin right out of the shower then pat dry.

Safflower oil - A reader had posted this recommendation on another dry skin article and said it worked really well for her.

For superb moisturizing bath oil, add 5 drops of your favorite essential oil to 1 tablespoon of carrier oil such as almond or safflower. Shake bottle thoroughly. For instance you can add lavender essential oil or a lavender and rosemary blend. However, I feel that a note of caution is due here - when working with essential oils - know their properties as they are potent. For instance rosemary has stimulating effects and should not be used by pregnant women as an example. Be sure you understand the properties of essential oils before using them in any skin care products.

Get essential oil samples, some less than $1.00. Great for experimenting with and learning about essential oils. Additionally lipstick adds color to the face and compliments the rest of your makeup and complexion.

However, the problem with lipstick though is its inability to last all day. Whether it is a drug store brand or a high end lipstick, it never seems to last. Lipstick needs to be reapplied throughout the day. Another downside with traditional lipstick is that it can be messy; it ends up on clothing, bleeds onto teeth and even ends up on the cheeks and lips of people you love.

The time had come to reinvent lipstick and SeneGence did just that. A new product hit the market called LipSense. LipSense is a non-conventional lip stain. It is a revolutionary breakthrough in lipstick. It will not fade, wear off, leave marks on the clothes, teeth or on the cheeks and lips of the people you love. Furthermore, because it lasts all day, it moisturizers and protects the lips so that dry chapped lips are a thing of the past.

Another advantage of this innovative lipstick is that you can create your own colors and texture. You can select and combine shades and choose to make them shiny or frosty or rich and solid. How many traditional lipsticks do will do that?

Have you tried this innovative new lipstick? My family was not rich by any means but there were principles of fashion that I was taught. Below are just a few of the fashion insights I had while growing up.

1: Never wear white in winter. Although a winter white is appropriate. What this actually means is that you are not going to wear white slacks made from a lightweight material. A winter white would be slacks made from a heavier material. It is really not the color it is the fabric that mattered.

2: Never wear high heels with cropped pants - Cropped pants are considered casual wear and the fashion etiquette rule was never mix casual clothing with dress shoes. During the fifties a woman wearing high heels and Capri or cropped pants had a definite "naughty girl" association with it. Today women in heels with cropped pants look pretty good. Wider leg crop pants look refined with bulky shoes and a skinny leg cropped pant look more flattering with a pointy toe or wedge sandal which elongates the legs.

3: Your Skirt Should never be longer than you coat - This came about in the 1920's when knee length hemlines finally made the scene. I still practice this rule, but according to the experts it's ok as long as your skirt and coat shape and length are streamlined in appearance.

4: Purse, Shoes and Belt should always match - how boring! I sure do not follow this fashion rule anymore. Combining different textures and colors that compliment each other creates a far more interesting look. And, who could afford or have the patience change her purse every time she changed her shoes.

My fashion pet peeves:

1: Just because you do not like a particular piece of clothing in the store, keep it to yourself; the person in front of you may be buying it.
2: Dressing for comfort doesn't have to mean letting it all hang out. Other people may not want to see it.
3: If the outfit doesn't fit, don't wear it. Put it back in the closet or give it to someone it will fit.
4: Where holiday clothing appropriately and know when to put it away.
5: Wear appropriate clothes for the weather. Also called dressing for the season.
6: When complimented on your outfit, just say "thank you"

Fortunately fashion rules have come along way since I was growing up and I am glad for that. Fashion is more of "if it makes you feel good - wear it" and that to me is what fashion is all about.

What fashion etiquette do you follow? Do you have fashion pet peeves? I would love to hear them!

Interested in skin care recipes, easy, inexpensive and so beneficial to the skin, visit Complete Skin Care Therapy

The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own

Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro

I do hope you will read my other posts and offer your comments and opinions.

Every season we should evaluate our skin care routine. For instance, during the winter months the sebaceous (oil) glands produce less oil; thus for those with oily skin during the summer months they may find some relief from excess oil during the winter. However for those of us with combination skin or dry skin, the winter months dry out the skin even more.

Below are suggestions to help you combat dry skin in the winter time:

Hydrate the Face - both inside and outside. Winter is the perfect time for warm herbal teas loaded with antioxidants. Additionally, you should have a daytime moisturizer that still includes SPF and an emollient rich nighttime cream. Consider a lotion during the day and a cream at night time. Consider creams that contain shea butter, avocado oil, and olive oil for example. Avoid moisturizers that contain alcohol and synthetic preservatives, fragrances, and coloring, as these have a tendency to strip the skin of its natural oils and have a drying effect on the skin.

Cleansing - we all know that we should stay clear of harsh soaps on our face. We also know that we should avoid extremely hot showers, although they are so tempting when it's zero degrees! Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils thus drying out the skin.

Cleansing for the body, consider a body wash that is gentle and can enrich the skin such as aloe Vera. I love these body washes.

After your shower pat down with a lotion rich in moisture such as shea butter. Check out these body butters loaded with nourishing ingredients body butters.

Addtionally, if possible consider using fragrance- and dye-free laundry detergents and avoid fabric softeners. These chemicals embedded into our clothes can irritate dry skin. Consider eco-friendly products as Shaklee -Fresh Laundry Concentrate HE Compatible, only use 1 oz per load.

Facial Cleansing - this is probably the most important part of your skin care routine. A good cleanser will thoroughly clean the skin and not strip away natural oils. Check out this gentle cleanser loaded with hebal extracts, omega 3's, and natural oils.

Facial Toning - this is a matter of preference. I have read and written several articles about the importance of toners, however there are some that say it is not needed. Personally, I love my homemade green tea and chamomile toner. Get the recipe here

Body Exfoliate - A good exfoliate once a week will perk up skin and color by promoting circulation under the skin. There are various types on the market and there are also some great body scrub recipes. If looking to purchase a body scrub consider these body scrubs. If you are considering making your own or would like to make some for a gift, read my post DIY Christmas Gifts

Facial Exfoliate - usually once a week. For an easy exfoliate, add a little cornmeal to your facial cleansing. You will notice a difference in the feel and look of your complexion.

Facial Masks - A facial mask can do so much to hydrate deep down into the lower layers of the skin. There are numerous types on the market, I like this dead sea mud mask. Addtionally, I make my own masks, such as an Oatmeal mask or visit Complete skin Care Therapy and click on the Recipes tab.

Lips - thin skinned and no oil producing glands in the lips. They take a beating during the winter. If you suffer from chapped lips all winter long consider a waxy lip balm to lock in moisture and protect before you got outdoors. Consider a lip balm that contain avocado, olive, or soybean, they soften and soothe, while vitamin A-rich shea butter promotes healing. Check out Burt's Bees Replenishing Lip Balm with Pomegranate

Hands and Feet - just like the face, if you do not wear gloves, the hands are exposed to the winter elements. They need moisture and protection to. Consider a day lotion with SPF and at night give them a treatment with some shea butter for example. The feet which never see the light of day during the winter months are still vulnerable to cracks and dry skin and prone to developing fungus. Consider a balm with peppermint or tea tree oil at night to fight fungus, and cover your feet with cotton socks. Additionally a weekly soak in Epsom salts does wonders to relieve foot ache, fungus and cleanse.

Well those are my winter skin care tips; I would love to hear what changes you make in you skin care routine for the winter. The harmful fumes from so many cleaning products linger in the air and can actually cause illness and/or respiratory problems especially in children. In view of the harmful effects of common cleaning products on our health and the environment, it behooves me that these toxic chemical based cleaners still crowd the shelves of supermarkets and drugstores. Additionally, there is an assortment of germicide products on the market today. They come in the form of sprays or wipes and most of these products contain triclosan which is detrimental to the environment. These products leave behind harmful chemicals on the countertop and harmful odors in the air, especially for young children. Furthermore, unless you use the product as directed it really does nothing to destroy germs or bacteria.

So look at the label on your germicide. It is EPA registered – meaning it is eco-friendly safe. Does it give the list of germs and viruses it is supposed to remove? Can your germicide live up to Shaklee’s Basic G?

Below is a list of the pathogens that Basic G can remove. Does your germicide compare or are your just pouring more toxins down the drain?

Basic-G Concentrated Germicide Quart - Tough on Germs

Bacteria, fungi, and viruses can wreak havoc on your family's health and safety. Used as directed, Basic-G tackles over 40 of these pesky microbes, including several animal viruses. That makes it an excellent choice for use in the kitchen, bathroom, or pet area. In addition to being economical - one quart makes up to 64 gallons - it's also EPA registered.

Basic-G® Germicide is effective against the following pathogens:

Bacteria
Pseudomonas aeruginosa1
Staphylococcus aureus1
Salmonella enterica
Acinetobacter calcoaceticus
Bordetella bronchiseptica
Chlamydia psittaci
Community Associated Methicillin-Resistant
Staphylococcus aureus (NRS384) (USA300)
Community Associated Methicillin-Resistant
Staphylococcus aureus (NRS123) (USA400)
Enterobacter aerogenes
Enterobacter cloacae
Enterococcus faecalis – Vancomycin Resistant
(VRE)
Escherichia coli1
Fusobacterium necrophorum
Klebsiella pneumoniae1
Legionella pneumophila
Listeria monocytogenes
Pasteurella multocida
Proteus mirabilis
Proteus vulgaris
Salmonella enteritidis
Salmonella typhi
Salmonella typhimurium
Serratia marcescens
Shigella flexneri
Shigella sonnei
Staphylococcus aureus – Methicillin resistant
(MRSA)
Staphylococcus aureus – Vancomycin Intermediate
Resistant (VISA)
Staphylococcus epidermidis2
Streptococcus faecalis1
Streptococcus pyogenes (Strep)

Viruses
*Adenovirus Type 4
*Herpes Simplex Type1
*Herpes Simplex Type2
*Human coronavirus
*Influenza A / Hong Kong Flu Virus*
*Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
*Rotavirus
*Rubella (German Measles)
*SARS Associated Coronavirus

Animal Viruses
*Avian Influenza (H5N1)*Avian polyomavirus
*Canine distemper
*Feline leukemia
*Feline picornavirus
*Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis
*Infectious bronchitis (Avian IBV)
* Newcastle Disease
*Pseudorabies (PRV)
*Rabies
*Transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGE)

Fungi
Aspergillus niger
Candida albicans
Trichophyton mentagrophytes (Athlete’s Foot Fungus)
----------------------------------------
1 ATCC & antibiotic-resistant strain
2 Antibiotic-resistant only
* Virucidal

Revised May 2009 ---Member price $17.00 SRP: $20.35 one quart makes up to 64 gallons and EPA registered! These winter blues is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), and the primary cause of this of this disorder is lack of light. That is why Seasonal Affective is more prevalent in the northern parts of the country due to the extremely long periods of darkness. For some, this type of depression can be incapacitating due to severe depression, feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and social withdrawal to name a few.

There are approximately 10 million to 25 million Americans, 75 percent of whom are women, who suffer from this subtype of depression called seasonal affective disorder. As indicated above this condition can incapacitate otherwise healthy people while others may experience mild symptoms such as grumpiness and general irritability.

SAD usually sets in about late October when the days start getting shorter and dissipates in early spring. The difference between this type pf depression and other mental illness diseases is that, as the name implies, it is seasonal. Furthermore SAD symptoms can be remedied with out the use of prescription drugs for the most part. However, if light therapy and home remedies do not alleviate your SAD symptoms, you should visit your doctor to ensure that there are not other health issues causing your depression.

Light Therapy – This should be your first line of defense. Lighten up your living and workspace that closely match natural daylight. Start at about 30 minuets a day and evaluate your symptoms on a weekly basis, if symptoms do not improve increase your light therapy to 45 minutes a day. Believe it or not you should feel better in three to four days. Light boxes specially made for light therapy can be quite expensive. However, light therapy should be your first choice in combating SAD and so much better than prescription drugs. You can find light boxes at Amazon.com starting at about $70.00

Diet and Exercise – we all know exercise reduces stress and anxiety. Make it a point to get a little exercise each day. Additionally eat more foods high in omega 3 fatty acids, such as mackerel and salmon. A study found that people with depression often have low levels of omega 3s.

Natural Remedy such as St. John’s wort has been used to ward off depression. Did you know that avocado contains vitamins A, B1, B2 and D, lecithin, potassium as well as vitamin E. In addition to the vitamins it contains proteins and more than 20% essential fatty acids (amino acids). It is a sought after skin care ingredient because it has so much to offer.

Avocados are used in anti-aging products because of its nourishing and hydrating abilities. The Department of Food Engineering and Biotechnology, Technion Israel Institute of Technology in 1991 found that avocado oil significantly increases collagen in the skin which is why it is commonly found in antiaging products. Furthermore because of its deep penetration into the skin it is a perfect ingredient to combat dry skin. For those that suffer with eczema or psoriasis avocado offers healing properties that will relive dryness. Both avocado and avocado oil is gentle and well tolerated by those with sensitive skin.

In addition to its moisturizing and healing properties, it is also high in sterolins, AKA plant steroids, which are reported to diminish age spots and heal scars. If you never had an avocado facial, try one; your skin will love you for it!

Below are a few avocado skin care recipes:

Facial Mask for Dry Skin
½ avocado
1 teaspoon almond oil (Note if allergic to nuts use different oil such as jojoba oil or olive oil). Even a vegetable oil in your cupboard will do.)
Mash avocado and then add almond oil or oil of your choice.
Apply to face, avoiding the eye area, and let set for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado & Honey Face Mask – for dry skin
2 tablespoons of avocado
2 tablespoons honey
1 egg yolk
Mash the avocado, add the honey and egg. Mix until thoroughly blended. Apply to face avoiding the eye area. Let set 10 minutes then rise with warm water then cool water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado Mask for Oily Skin
1 avocado, mash
1 egg white
1 tsp. lemon juice
Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until you get a mixture. Apply to a clean face with fingertips on the oiliest part of the face (T-zone). Let dry for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water, follow with toner and moisturizer.

Avocado’s can be hard to find and/or a little pricey if living in a northern climate, so here are some recipes that use avocado oil instead.

Dry Skin Cleansing Cream
1/2 oz. Beeswax
1 oz. Lanolin
2 oz. Almond Oil
1 oz. Avocado Oil
1 oz. Grapeseed Oil
2 drops Clary-Sage Essential Oil
2 drops Lemon Essential Oil
3 oz. Spring Water
Instructions:
Using a double boiler, melt beeswax, lanolin, and oils. Stir well. When melted, take off heat and add essential oils, then water. As a teenager I recall using facial masks and bath and body products that contained oatmeal. I loved oatmeal skin care products then, and to this day I still use oatmeal in my skin care routine. The only difference now is that I make my own oatmeal scrubs and masks and will soon try my hand at making some oatmeal bar soaps.

Oatmeal has wonderful properties that can nourish and heal and good for all skin types. It is hypoallergenic and contains amino acids which will keep the skin will hydrated. As we all know amino acids have a positive effect upon cells. They can help improve skin that has been scarred and I have read that they are more powerful than alpha-hydroxyls in terms of smoothing the skin and improving tone and color. Another plus is amino acid is not photosensitive and does not cause irritation that alpha and beta hydroxyls have.

Additionally you may have seen the term colloidal oatmeal listed in your oatmeal bath and skin care products, this is simply oats that are ground into an extremely fine powder. The oatmeal is ground so fine that it blends easily with water, such as in a bath, or in lotions and creams.

Also, did you know that oats are recognized by the Food and Drug Administration for its natural skin protection? Furthermore, oats are so versatile; you can mix and match your ingredients depending on your skin type and skin care need.

So without further ado, get out the oatmeal and prepare for a wonderful facial mask. If a soaking bath is in order, get out the grinder and grind up some oats and add a little to your bath water. I suggest that you use old fashioned rolled oats.

Basic Oatmeal Facial mask with exfoliating properties
3/4 cup dry Oatmeal
1/3 cup warm water
Mix the ingredients together until a paste is formed. Spread evenly over face and neck avoiding the eye area. Sit back and relax, maybe through a couple of sliced cucumbers on the eyes for the ultimate spa experience. When the mask starts to feel a little itchy, because ithe oats are drying, rinse with warm water then cool water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.

Oatmeal Dry Skin Facial Mask
1 Egg (naturally if allergic to eggs do not use)
1/2 cup Oatmeal
2 teaspoons extra virgin Olive oil or almond oil (do not use almond oil if allergic to nuts)
Mix all the ingredients to form a paste. Adjust oatmeal or oil so that you have a thick paste that will not run. Apply to face and neck avoiding the eye area. Leave on 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water then cool water. Follow with a homemade toner and moisturizer.

Oatmeal Oily Skin Mask
1 Egg white (has astringent properties)
1 tablespoon Oatmeal
1/2 teaspoon Lemon juice (has astringent properties and skin whitening properties)
Beat the egg and slowly add the oatmeal then lemon juice. Adjust if needed so that you have a good paste that will not run. Apply over face and neck avoiding the eye area. When the oatmeal starts to dry and slight itching begins rinse with warm water then cool water. Follow with a toner and moisturizer. Note: lemon has photosensitivity properties so best used in the evening.

These are just a few of the facial masks you can make with oatmeal. There are a variety of other ingredients you can use such as honey, yogurt, milk, baking soda, etc. However, as with all skin care products a patch test is always recommended.

Wild oats, honey and vitamins combine to create this unique hydrating mask - deep penetrating and long lasting moisturizing. Soothe and moisturize dry, rough skin, soften and eliminate skin rashes. Provides healing skin care that moisturizes and hydrates renewing molecular moisture and retention. Increases cellular rejuvenation and turnover for fresh moisture rich skin. Get your oatmeal mask.

Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Body Wash with Natural Collidial Oatmeal - 18 oz bottles, pack of three!

For more great skin care recipes, beauty tips, and skin care articles visit Complete Skin Care Therapy

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers kill harmful bacterial, such as streptococcus, salmonella, staphylococcus, E. coli and shigella. Hand sanitizers physically destroy the germs however these products do not claim to kill viruses.

While hand sanitizers can be useful when soap and water are not available, there are key elements that make them effective. For a hand sanitizer to be effective it must contain at least 63% Ethyl Alcohol, any percent less than that will not be effective in killing germs. Unfortunately there are hand sanitizers on the market with an alcohol content of 40% which will have no effect when sanitizing the hands. Always check the label for the concentration of alcohol if buying an alcohol based hand sanitizer.

Furthermore, just like properly washing your hands a hand sanitizer needs to be applied to the top, bottom, sides, inside fingers and fingertips. Rub vigorously with enough cleaner to get them damp and continue rubbing together until they appear dry. If this dry feeling occurs within les then 15 seconds you have not used enough cleaner.

Lately it has also been an issue in schools about the flammability of the alcohol in hand sanitizers and the potential misuse they may pose as an intoxicant. Thus alcohol based hand sanitizers have been banned from some schools. As an alternative to these alcohol based sanitizers a chemical called benzalkonium chloride is used instead of alcohol.

If you are an environmentalist such as me, I have a problem with throwing all those little plastic bottles in the trash. I also have a problem with the chemicals contained in them and the fact that they are getting a little pricey! How about a more natural remedy to sanitize your hands and with no ill effect on the environment!

Here is the recipe!

2 parts aloe gel (NOT juice)
1 part distilled water (NOT tap)
1 part ethyl alcohol-(such as vodka) (NOT isopropyl)
4-5 drops tea tree oil - a great antibacterial essential oil
Lavender oil or other fragrance oil to your liking, also blends well with blends well with lemon, eucalyptus, clove, cinnamon, and orange to name a few.

Although this may not have a concentration of 63% alcohol, the essential oil Tea tree oil has antiseptic, antibiotic, antiviral, and other wonderful properties to ward of germs.

You can get sample essential oils at Complete Skin Care Therapy

CleanWell hand sanitizers are made with a patented formulation of essential plant oils lab proven to kill 99.99 percent of the harmful germs. CleanWell is the only hand sanitizer that is all-natural and alcohol-free. These birds are native to Australia and history has it that this oil was used by the Aborigines for treatment of wounds, burns, scars, and muscle and joint paint. Today Emus are raised and harvested in the United States. They provide a rich lean meat that is fat free and low in cholesterol and a remarkable skin care treatment from the fat of the bird.

Emu oil is comprised of approximately 70% unsaturated fatty acids including an omega -6 and an omega-3 fatty acid. The cosmetic properties of Emu oil were studied at the University of Australia and their findings were outstanding. They found that it is a very effective moisturizer and offers skin softening and skin cell rejuvenating properties. Emu oil penetrates deep into the dermal layers of skin thus diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally it has anti-biotic and anti-inflammatory properties, which will help heal sunburn, skin rashes, eczema and other skin disorders. It is also non-comedogic, non-greasy, and hypo-allergenic.

The latest research in skin care indicates that essential fatty acids are important to achieve great skin and great hair. And, that the best anti-aging formulas need to have essential fatty acids and omega-3 in their formula. This is according to Dr. Perriconne’s latest best seller
Emu oil is loaded with essential fatty acids and omega-3’s. Has superb hydrating qualities, does not clog pores and kills bacteria.

Emu oil can help you keep a youthful appearance. In 4,500 B.C. Egyptians used myrrh and cedar wood oils for a embalming their dead and 6,500 years later the preserved mummies prove the fact discovered by the modern researchers that the cedar wood contains natural fixative and strong antibacterial and antiseptic properties. From that time forward there has been numerous instances recorded on the use of essential oils in healing.

Today, research has proved the valuable and multiple uses of essential oils. Medical research in the recent years has uncovered that the odors we smell have a significant impact on the way we feel. Smells act directly on the brain like a drug according to scientific research. For instance smelling lavender increases alpha wave frequency in the back of the head and this state is associated with relaxation. Additionally, essential oils have now become popular in skin care products for their valuable properties.

Essential oils in the home:

Diffusers
Diffusers are generally made of ceramic or clay. The diffuser has a cave-like opening to house small candles are earthen oil lamps and the top is shaped like a curved cup to hold a little water and few drops of aroma oil. Fill the top cup with water, add a few drops of essential oils depending on the oil chosen then light the candle or the lamp. For the oil lamp to last for a long duration, add castor oil to the earthen lamp because castor oil burns for a very long time as compared to the other oils used to light a lamp. Once the water and oil heat up, evaporation takes place and the whole atmosphere is filled with the aromatic scent

Vaporization
Consider placing a few drops into a vaporizer to add a moist, subtle hint of fragrance to any room. You can also add a couple of drops to a pan of water to gently steam over the kitchen stove or radiator.

Potpourri
Potpourri as the name suggests is a mixture of dried flowers, herbs, and grass and seed pods. Add a few drops to the potpourri mixture and place in a closed container overnight. This allows the oils to absorb into the potpourri. The following morning open the box and the aroma will fill the room. A few drops of essential oil added to the potpourri and kept in a bowl would keep giving out aromatic fragrance for 4-6 weeks.

Room Sprays
As we become more environment conscious, aerosols are being discouraged due to their ozone depleting properties. Essential oils are natural and hence they could be used liberally to deodorize a room, freshen and scent your bathroom, living-room, bedroom, dining-room, office cabin, etc. Merely add 10-12 drops of aroma oil to half a liter of water and spray the mixture with the help of a spray bottle. Oils like lavender, lemon, peppermint, pine and rosemary are best for this application.

Essential oils in the home are the best air filtration system. They purify by removing metallic particles and toxins, increase atmospheric oxygen, increase ozone and negative ions which inhibit bacteria growth, destroys mold, cigarette and animal odors and finally they will fill the air with a fresh scent. On top of all of that, they are environmentally safe!

Below are the benefits from some of the more common essential oils and fragrance oils used in the home:

•Chamomile offers a fruity, apple like fragrance which eases anxiety, tension, anger and fear and promotes relaxation, gives patience, peace minimizes worry.

•Grapefruit is a sweet, sharp and refreshing scent which has an overall uplifting effect. It has a reputation for balancing manic depression.

•Jasmine is a sweet, flowery-exotic and slightly heady scent which is claming to the nerves and warms emotions. Produces positive feelings of confidence

•Lavender fights depression, promotes sleep, lowers blood pressure and has an overall calming effect.

•Eucalyptus a clear and sharp scent which has a cooling effect on the emotions. Known to clear the head, help with concentration and strengthens the nervous system.

Please note that I have only listed the properties of these common essential oils and their effect on the mind, they also have therapeutic values to the body and to the skin. Spa treatments such as body wraps, and facial steams use essential oils for their therapeutic values and more and more skin care products are using wonderful essential oils such as jojoba oil, aloe Vera, neroli, and rose for example.

Essential oils are potent and care should be used when working with them. Pretty well manicured fingernails can add so much to your overall look.

So what are the latest trends in fingernail polish and shape? Well after some thorough investigation it appears that dark colors are the trend this year. Colors such as dark orange, coppers, wine, lavender, navy, plums, reds and dark browns are the color of the season. Additionally shimmer, glittery or sparkly is in for fall. These dark colors and shimmering colors are great for the night on the town! For the office consider nude/opaque colors and light pinks.

In addition to making a fashion statement with your new nail color, this season’s style seems to opt for the shorter length. Fingernails that extend slightly past the tip of the finger are the idea length. The shape of the fingernail this season is somewhere between oval and square. The trend seems to have moved completely away from the square fingernail. Whether you opt for long fingernails or fingernails just above the tip of the finger, it is important to note that you should select the right fingernail polish to complement the length of your nails.

DIY Manicure

Keep your nails manicured to a length that suits you. When filing your nails use an upward stroke along the top side of the nail. Do not file your nails along the side walls as this weakens the nail.

When cleaning your nails, use a nail brush in the shower or sink. Digging too far underneath the nail destroys the nail base and enlarges the white space between the nail plate and nail base. A gentle nail brush is much better for cleaning the nails. In addition, the gentle scrubbing under the fingernail promotes circulation to the finger tip.

The cuticle is an important part of the fingernail. It seals the area at the base of the nail protecting the nail base and the nail development system. Poking, prodding and cutting at the cuticle are not necessary. Doing so leaves your fingernail vulnerable to infection and bacteria. Once bacteria or an infection has set in under the cuticle or nail your nails could grow out with ridges or other unsightly markings. Gently massaging the cuticle with cuticle creams or lotion is fine to promote circulation and soften the cuticle for a well manicure look. A nice cuticle softener is olive oil. Just dab a small amount onto the cuticle and massage.

Invest in a good manicure set. If you go to the spa to get your nails done, bring your own equipment.

DIY Fingernail Polishing

Start with a base coat – there are various types on the market that will strengthen nails, smooth out ridges, etc. Select the one appropriate for your nail condition.

Apply polish – this should take three strokes, one down the middle, and one on each side. This definitely takes practice. Instead of going over the same area three or more times wait for the first coat to dry.

Apply a top coat – this will protect your polish from chipping and cracking. Some top coats are also designed to fast dry your polish.

Fingernail Polish Removal

After removing your nail polish, be sure to rinse your nails with water. Nail polish remover has a tendency dissolve the nail thus weakening them. I for one am a dedicated toner user. Toner has been part of my skin care routine since I was in my twenties and I am now over 50.

Toners are used after cleansing your face but before moisturizing. They are meant to remove the last bits of cleansing lotion, dirt or debris and to restore the skin’s pH balance. Additionally, depending on the type of toner and the ingredients they contain, they can offer anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Toners refresh and cool the skin and prepare your face for the next application of your skin care routine, such as applying your moisturizer or makeup, if any.

All skin types can benefit from a toner. However be sure to use the right toner for your skin type. Furthermore, find a toner that is free of irritants such as acetone, mint, menthol and SD alcohol, and ethanol and isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol is very drying to the skin and harms the soluble collagen below the surface of the skin. Witch hazel, germanium, honey, lemon, ivy and sage, chamomile, and green tea are just some of the herbs used in toners. Although witch hazel by itself can be very drying to the skin, use it with moisturizers such as vitamin E and honey.

As indicated above, toners are used after cleansing your face but before moisturizing. To apply, add a generous amount to a cotton ball and stroke over your face and neck liberally. Your toner should feel soothing and refreshing to the skin. I personally leave my toner in the fridge so it is really refreshes the skin and the cool liquid will close the pores before applying any moisturizer or makeup.

Below is a simple recipe to make your own toner. Keep it refrigerated and your skin will love the soothing and refreshing treat.

Anti-aging Toner
1/2 cup pure spring water or distilled water
2 teaspoons green tea leaves (or 1 green tea bag) – not decaffeinated
Bring water to a boil. Place the tea leaves or tea bag in a glass or bowl. Pour the boiling water over the leaves or bag and steep for 2 to 3 minutes. Strain the green tea into a bottle, and let it cool. Apply to skin with cotton balls. Do not rinse. Apply moisturizer.

It is not a mystery green tea is so popular in the cosmetic industry. Loaded with Vitamin E and C, the antioxidant agents slow the signs of aging externally.

For more skin care articles, homemade skin care recipes such as toners, facial peels, cleansers and exfoliate, visit Complete Skin Care Therapy and click on the recipes tab.

Check out these toners here

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 70px; height: 70px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xOMuNdyBVcA/Ss0mGhJzQDI/AAAAAAAAAK8/Zz6LB3mq7So/s200/iToners.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390006222452899890" />

Hope you can try some of these recipes and let me know what you think.

Toner for Large Pores
10 drops Patchouli essential oil
2 fluid ounces of distilled water
Mix both ingredients in a small spray bottle. Shake well to blend oil and water prior to each use. Spray on clean, washed face.

Patchouli offers many benefits in skin care products. Has a toning and tightening effect due to its astringent properties and therefore cools inflamed skin and heals rough cracked skin, sores and wounds. Also have diuretic properties which prove valuable for water retention and cellulite. Patchouli also proves effective for aging skin as it is believed to be a tissue regenerator thus promoting growth of new skin cells.

Firming Face Mask
1 Tbsp. honey
1 egg white
1 teaspoon glycerin
¼ cup flour
Blend & smooth over face and throat. Leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse

Softening Facial Masque (emollient)
1 egg yolk
1/3 cup avocado peeled and mashed
1/3 cup milk
Beat the egg yolk until fluffy. Add milk and avocado, mixing thoroughly with the yolk. Apply to face and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

Below is a simple recipe to make your own blackhead remover strip(s).
1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin
1 1/2 tablespoons milk
Mix both ingredients and microwave for 10 seconds until it is warm to the touch.

Note: this does not smell the best when taking it out of the microwave, but this recipe actually removes blackheads! Warm nose, and/or chin and forehead with a warm cloth to open pores, apply mixture to the area in which you wish to remove blackheads. Do not use around eyes or other delicate areas.

Allow mixture to dry for 15-20 minutes, or until a stiff film appears. Slowly peel off the film and there you go, all the debris in your pores has surfaced to the top. Rinse face with warm water and then follow with a cool toner to close pores and restore pH balance. Follow with a moisturizer that does not clog pores.
For blackheads that are deeply embedded into the skin, steam your face to open pores.

Coffee Rinse -to add shine and depth for brunettes and redheads
8 cups warm brewed coffee
Rinse hair with coffee after shampooing. Do not rinse it out. Your hair will be rich and shiny.

Vinegar Rinse
This rinse will remove the last traces of shampoo and give the hair extra shine and a soft, smooth, texture. Vinegar restores the pH balance to hair. Add a few tablespoons of pleasant-scented vinegar, such as raspberry or plum, to your rinse water. You can use this rinse after every shampoo, if desired.

Eliminating Large Pores
Mix 1 tsp. ground almond meal with enough water to form a paste. Apply it to your face and let it dry for 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water and follow up with a toner – see toner recipe at top. How exciting!

On first glance, I was intrigued. The product is about the size of a marker with small rollers on one end. A couple of clicks on the other end send the fluid to the rollers. Application is easy; just roll on under and around the eye area and then massage with fingertips.

Olay’s claim for this product is to “reduce eye puffiness, regenerate skin’s appearance to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.” So knowing Olay’s claim, I used the product everyday as directed and evaluated whether there was any improvement in diminishing fine lines and wrinkles and eye puffiness.

The first thing I noticed was how cool it was on the eye area and found it to be very soothing. Additionally, it is a lightweight and non-greasy formula that quickly absorbs into the skin. It is also a fun product to use and I can see how the rollers can increase blood flow thus reducing puffiness. I had absolutely no skin reaction to the product and I do suffer from skin sensitivity from certain skin care products.

My under eye puffiness usually subsides as the day wears on, however I did notice that eye puffiness was reduced in a minimal amount of time with the use of this product. It is important to note that the directions state that you must massage into the skin for 30 seconds and I noticed you will get better results by doing so.

As far as diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the corners of the eyes (crow’s feet, etc) I really can not comment either way.

I have been blessed, and at 56 I have no wrinkles in the corner of my eyes. However the under eye puffiness is my biggest aging skin problem to overcome.

Would I buy the product? I would like to, but at $22.99 it is a little steep for my pocketbook. So guess I will have to stick with my homemade beauty treatments such as rosemary tea bags, cold eye compresses and sweet almond oil for moisturizing to reduce eye puffiness. However, overall I liked the product, the innovative application, and I believe it helped my under eye puffiness. Additionally, I will certainly keep the rollers and use them to apply my other eye care products that I have on hand.

My disappointment was the packaging. In this day and age we should all be a little more environmentally conscious and the packaging was quite large for the size of the product.

Get your Olay anti-aging roller at Amazon the current price only $18.99 Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging Eye Anti-Aging Roller, 0.2-Ounce Box

For easy homemade skin care recipes and informative articles, visit Complete Skin Care Therapy

Brown eyes can wear so many shades of eye shadow and go from smoky eyes for evening wear to a light and natural finish for day wear.

Not all brown eyes are created equal. There is different color of brown eyes ranging from deep dark brown to a lighter brown. Additionally the specs in the iris can vary from yellow to copper toned specs. When selecting the perfect color for your brown eyes, pick colors that complement the specs in the iris of the eye. Colors that complement the specs in your eyes will blend with your complexion and accentuate your eyes.

Again, while most brown eyed girls can wear a wide variety of eye colors, skin tone is an important factor. For instance those with a warm skin tone (yellow tinted) should avoid yellow tinted eye makeup while those with a cool skin tone should avoid red based or rosy hues. As a general rule, women with fair complexions should use earthy or pastel colors, while women with darker skin should choose darker colors that enhance their eyes.

Tpo enhance the eyes, brown eyed girls should avoid brown eye makeup that matches the color of their eyes. Consider a shade lighter or darker to add depth to the eye area. Colors such as beige, tan, taupe, dark brown and chocolate brown are better tones for brown eyes than just plain brown. Additionally, amber, mahogany, copper and gold will enhance your eyes but only when used lightly as a highlight or accent for other tones.

Other colors that work well on brown eyes are:
Brown - preferably one that is a shade lighter or dark than your eyes, mocha, beige, tan, gray, charcoal, khaki, olive green, hunter green, bronze, gold, violet, lavender, pink, rose, and blue. Usually silver should be avoided. Plum, burnt orange, coral, aqua and burgundy compliment brown eyes. Again take into consideration the color of the specs in your eyes and your skin tone. Chances are you will be able to tell if a color just isn't working for you!

Application

The first step in your eye makeup application is to apply a base coat of a neutral or matte color over the entire eyelid. If you are over 40 consider a primer to help hold you eye makeup in place. Consider colors that range from beige to champagne.

Secondly, contour your eyes, by using a darker color or contrasting color in the crease of your eyes and blend into the base color. A darker or contrasting shade will create depth.

Lastly, highlight just below the brow with a shimmery color or a light contrasting color that will blend with your base color.

A good tip to remember is to use lighter matte colors as your base color, darker colors as your contouring color, and lightest colors as your highlight.

The best thing about brown eyes is the variety of colors that will enhance your eyes. So get out of the brown eye makeup rut and experiment with some plums, coppers, etc.

This product has great review, check it out!

NEW SHANY© 2009 BOUTIQUE 40 color eyeshadow palette KIT -The Most Gifted 2008

Are one of those types that simply wipes down your face at the end of the day? Then you are not doing you complexion any justice. Your skin works hard all day fighting off free radicals and deserves proper cleansing. Additionally proper cleansing will refresh and rejuvenate your complexion.

Proper cleansing comes from selecting the right product for your skin type. Furthermore the best cleanser, no matter what skin type you have, is those that do not strip away the natural fatty oils which protect and waterproof the skin. Over drying the skin with harsh cleansers leaves the skin vulnerable to excessive dryness and leaves the skin exposed to bacteria and cellular damage.

To begin pull your hair away from your face then wash your hands, this prevents bacterial and dirt from transferring from your hands onto your face. Apply your cleansing product at the forehead then gently sweep the cleanser over the face and continue to massage into the lips and neck area. Massage the cleanser into your skin in a gentle circular motion, paying special attention to the thin skin under the eyes. Avoid the upper eye area; many cleansers are not formulated to be used on the eye area. Thoroughly rinse your face with cool or tepid water (not to hot or to cold). Extreme hot or cold water can cause flushing and break sensitive capillaries in the skin. After cleansing, pat dry and follow with toner to restore pH balance and any traces of cleanser. Apply toner on a cotton ball or pad and gently wipe over your face starting with cheeks, chin, nose and ending with your forehead. After toning, follow with a SPF moisturizer for daytime wear and a hydrating lotion for nighttime wear. Gently smooth your moisturizer over your face and neck area to protect and hydrate your skin.

For an added bonus for your complexion, consider an exfoliate to slough off dead skin cells, promote new skin cell growth and improve circulation. Depending on your skin type and the type of exfoliate I recommend no more than one per week. A simple homemade skin care exfoliate is to just add a bit of cornmeal to your regular cleansing cream. Other alternatives are sea salts, Epsom salts, or sugar. Sea salt is a natural for normal skin. It contains marine extracts and minerals that help revitalize the skin. Sugar is a gentle exfoliate ideal for sensitive skin since the grains have smoother edges than salt grains.

Another spa treatment that is so beneficial to the skin is facial masks. Again, depending on your skin type, no more than once a week is recommended. Papaya, avocado or honey makes great facial masks.

To get some easy homemade skin care recipes for facial masks, toners, and exfoliates visit Complete Skin Care Therapy

Get some great name brand, reasonably priced skin care products at Skin Energizer

The line(s) across your face are quite upsetting, especially if you have to head out the door to work, run errands or whatever you do to start your day.

Usually the big wrinkle disappears in an hour or two but did you know that these types of creases in your face can eventually cause a permanent skin wrinkle. These creases are similar in concept to constant frowning which can give you permanent lines in your forhead, or how squinting all the time can produce those fine lines around the eyes.

Sleep is a time in which our bodies and skin rejuvenate, however as we age that rejuvenation process slows down. During the aging process, collagen breaks down leading to less elasticity, cell regeneration is sluggish, blood circulation slow downs, and usually the skin tends to be more dry. Because of these factors our skin does not bounce back as quickly as it used to, thus pillow crease lines are formed. Furthermore, pillow crease lines can also be a result of laying in the same position for prolong periods thus restricting blood circulation.

Whether you develop pillow crease lines due to aging and loss of elasticity or from lying in the same position for several hours, restricting blood flow, there are several options to eliminate facial pillow case creases. The most obvious is to sleep on your back - yeah right! Another option is to have wrinkle free pillow cases, and is that really an option - who has time to iron pillow cases! The best solution is to invest in silk pillowcases and use a hydrating lotion or cream at night. A night time hydrating lotion will prevent or lessen pillow case creases as it will keep the skin supple. Additionally, whether you are 56 years old or 22 retaining moisture and suppleness in the skin will prevent or lessen the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

For more skin care articles, homemade skin care recipes, and great skin care products visit Complete Skin Care Therapy

Get your Silk Pillowcase Covers (Free Worldwide Shipping)

Get your moisturizer at Skin Energizer

Additionally, trail and error in selecting your anti-aging product can get expensive and frustrating.

Before you step out on your venture for the right anti-aging product, consider these tips.

First and foremost, know your skin type. Is your skin dry, oily, normal, combination (oily in the T-zone but dry otherwise), and/or sensitive? If you are unsure of your skin type, read my article "How to Determine Your Skin Type". Knowing your skin type is a crucial step in selecting the right anti-aging product.

Secondly, make a list of what your anti-aging cream should do for your complexion. Are you battling dark spots and age spots, or it is it fine lines and wrinkles. Is your complexion troubled with an uneven skin tone? Once you have determined the skin care issues you want to address, select your product accordingly.

For instance, if dark spots or age spots add years to your complexion, look for creams that are rich with D3PA (Dithiolane-3-Pentanoic Acid). D3PA alias Dithiolane-3-Pentanoic Acid claims to be a fast-acting anti-wrinkle treatment, loaded with antioxidants and decreases hyper pigmentation. Additionally, you could try a product with Hydroquinone which lightens the skin in two ways - It inhibits the production of melanin (the pigment responsible for the darkening of skin and actual skin color) and it breaks down the existing excess melanin on the spots that require treatment.

If fine line and wrinkles are a problem consider creams rich in AH3 (Acetyl Hexapeptide-3). AH3 supposedly relaxes facial tension leading to the reduction in facial lines and wrinkles with regular use. This remotely resembles the effect of Botox, which reduces facial tension and movement by paralyzing facial muscles.

Just to name a few, some of the best ingredients in anti-aging products are: alpha hydroxyl acids - (read my article on which alpha hydroxyl acid is right for your skin type). Retinol - which is a Vitamin A based derivatives - Retinol speeds up cell turnover, which means new skin cells come to the surface. Additionally, it has been observed to reduce the size of wrinkles. Look for forms of retinol such as retinal palmitate in wrinkle creams. This ingredient works to give your face an overall youthful glow, however some people do experience sun sensitivity to retinol and should only be used at bedtime and a sunscreen should be applied in the a.m. Vitamins C, E, and K also prove helpful in anti-aging products.

There are many anti-aging creams available that contain artificial ingredients, whether they are better or not compared to natural ingredients is not the scope of this article. However, I do believe that synthetic ingredients in anti-aging products have unknown side effects down the road. Therefore, I am a firm believer of natural products made from botanicals, marine plant extracts, sea salts, and homemade facials with various common kitchen ingredients. When shopping for your anti-aging cream, look for natural ingredients such as aloe Vera, honey, or jojoba oil to name a few, all of these ingredients have nourishing properties. Consider clay masks or seaweed mask for extra nourishment or citrus masks for skin lightening.

Next time you purchase your next anti-aging product be prepared to understand what you are buying and know the side effects of the ingredients, if any. I am also inclined to believe that there are basic skin care tools that are necessary for great skin care.

How many times have you tried to do a job without the right tool? For instance, removing nail polish with toilet paper instead of a cotton ball or pad makes that particular job more difficult and takes more time and effort than it needs to be.

While searching through the skin care isle at any drugstore, department store or discount store,
there is an overwhelming array of tools to care for your skin. There are facial scrubbers, body
scrubbers and microdermabrasion cloths to name a few. So what tools are really needed for total skin care and body care? Well after much consideration, below are the tools I think are absolute must have items.

A magnified mirror is a must have. The magnification helps me to really see my skin. I can see what pesky hair needs to be plucked which I might otherwise have missed viewing in a regular mirror. I can also evaluate the pores on my skin and adjust my skin care routine as needed. For example, if I see that my face is oilier than usual and blackheads are building up I can adjust my toner and cleanser to address those problems.

Tweezers are next on my list of needed skin care tools. Over the years I have bought several cheap pairs and they were just that, cheap! Invest in a good pair of tweezers. A great pair of tweezers makes plucking the eyebrows and other facial areas so much easier.

Cotton balls or cotton pads to remove eye makeup are a must. Cotton balls or pads are gentle on the delicate skin around the eyes than a washcloth would be. They are also useful for nail polish removing, applying toner, blending makeup, etc. I personally prefer cotton balls but there are some good cotton pads on the market today.

A good manicure/pedicure set will keep your hands and feet beautiful. Pretty nail polish and well manicured fingernails and toes add so much to your overall appearance. If you are not a nail polish person, consider a nail buffer to bring out the shine in your fingernails and toes.

Finally, a good washcloth is my choice for body care. Although all the cute body scrubbers on the market are tempting, a washcloth works fine. It offers just enough exfoliate to slough off dead skin and promote circulation.

Visit Complete Skin Care Therapy for more articles, skin care recipes and great products!

However, it is important to note that how you treat your skin in your twenties will forever be apparent later in life. Beginning a preventive maintenance skin care program in your twenties will help maintain a youthful glow well into your 40's.

Our skin ages in two ways: the accumulated physical changes normally associated with the passage of time (chronological aging) and through the accumulated damage caused by exposure to environmental pollutants and UV radiation (accelerated aging). Both of these types of aging can be slowed down with proper skin care and protection.

Your twenties could be considered the age of prevention, when most skin care issues start with lack of care. Forgetting to wash your face before bed can lead to clogged pores, whiteheads and blackheads. Squinting in the sun and not using moisturizers can contribute to fine dry lines around the eyes. Too little sleep, too much alcohol and smoking can dull the complexion. Serious sunburn can now set the stage for age spots, and worse yet set the stage for some form of skin cancer including melanoma

The first step in developing the right skin care program to ward off premature aging is to determine your skin type. Is your skin on the dry side, oily or a combination of both - knowing your skin type will ensure that you have selected the most beneficial skin care products. If you are not sure how to determine your skin type read my article "How to Determine Your Skin Type".

Your beauty regimen should consist of daily cleansing, toning and moisturizing. No matter what skin type you have (dry, oily, or combination) these steps are the key to great skin. For those with dry skin, avoid lathering type cleansers, and toners that are alcohol based. Your moisturizer should be rich in emollients. For those with oily skin, do not over dry the skin with to harsh of skin care products, this only leads the skin to produce more oil to combat that "dry" skin feeling.

Exfoliates and Masks:
A good exfoliate stimulates skin cells, cleans pores and sloughs off dead skin. No matter what skin type, an exfoliate is recommended, and depending on your skin type and the type of exfoliate, they should be used as needed. Additionally, facial masks do wonder to hydrate and nourish the skin.

Sunscreen - Although we hear it over and over again, don't leave home without your sunscreen on. Sunscreen will protect your skin from those age spots that will eventually show up later in life or worse yet development of some form of skin cancer.

On a personal note, look for products that contain natural ingredients such as green tea, jojoba oil, or aloe vera just to name a few. Better yet consider making your own toners, masks, and exfoliates. By taking care of your skin in your twenties you will be rewarded in your 40's by less wrinkles, age spots, and an overall beautiful complexion.

For easy exfoliates, facial masks and facial peels you can easily make at home, visit Complete Skin Care Therapy

Carol Belanger, author of 300+ Skin Care Recipes

Emu Moisturizing Lotion
A skin moisturizer that penetrates deep for effective soothing and hydration. It’s great on toast, in tea, and offers so many benefits when used in skin care products.

Honey is not anything new; it has been around for thousands of years! Honey has been and still is used in food products and in medicine. Honey is now emerging into the cosmetics industry which is really not new either. Honey has been used by women in the early days of the Roman Empire as facial masks, honey and milk baths, etc.

Honey is comprised of 98% sugar and 2% enzymes, vitamins and minerals. These vitamins and minerals would include vitamin C, a variety of B vitamins such as niacin, riboflavin, and pantothenic acid, and the mineral potassium. It is also rich in amino acids. This combination of natural ingredients offers a multitude of benefits when used in skin care products.

Properties of Honey:

Natural humectants - which makes it a superb moisturizing ingredient. Honey has the ability to bind moisture to the skin to help it stay hydrated. Additionally, it will smooth out rough, dry and wrinkled skin.

A natural antioxidant - which fights off free radical damage. Antioxidants are used in skin care products to fight free radicals and reverse the signs of aging.

Ant-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties - Honey also possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. These properties are beneficial for those with problems skin such as mild acne. Research has shown honey has shown to manage acne by attacking the bacteria which is causing the outbreaks. Because of its potent antibacterial properties, hospitals in Asia and Europe have used honey infused bandages to help heal infected wounds successfully

Below are some simple skin care recipes to enjoy the many benefits of honey. Although honey tends to be well tolerated by most skin types, a patch test is always recommended.

Easy Cleansing Scrub
Mix honey with ground almonds and scrub on face. Note: if allergic to nuts this would not be recommended. Try cornmeal instead.

Purifying Scrub

Mix 1 tbsp. of honey with 2 tbsp. finely ground almonds and 1/2 tsp. lemon juice. Massage gently onto face and rinse well with warm water. Follow with toner

Firming Facial mask
Whisk a tablespoon of honey together with an egg white, 1 teaspoon of glycerin and about 1/4 cup of flour. Smooth on the face, leave on 15 minutes, and rinse off with warm water.

Moisturizing pack
Mix 2 tablespoons of honey with 2 teaspoons of whole milk, smooth over the face and throat, and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water, and finish by splashing with cold water.

Moisturizing lotion
for dry patches such as elbows, mix 1 teaspoon of honey with 1 teaspoon of olive oil and a 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice, then apply. Wash off after 15 minutes.

For easy exfoliates, facial masks and facial peels you can easily make at home, visit Complete Skin Care Therapy

Try this dry skin face mask made with wild oats, honey and vitamins!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 143px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xOMuNdyBVcA/Sn8hABdPCNI/AAAAAAAAAJk/Fql4aXYGuJU/s200/dry+skin+face+mask.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368045565123692754" />

These products actually do what they claim to do, which is to reduce the appearance of winkles, even out skin tone, and smooth out your complexion.

Alpha and beta hydroxyl acids are similar to a microdermabrasion or exfoliate treatment. They slough off the top layers of the skin thus promoting new skin cell growth. Additionally they claim to stimulate the production of collagen and elasticity in the skin.

Alpha hydroxyl acids are derived from fruit, milk and sugars. They are represented on skin care labeling as:
Glycolic acid - sugar cane
Lactic acid - milk
Malic acid - apples and pears
Citric acid- oranges and lemons
Tartaric acid - grapes

Alpha hydroxyl acids are water soluble which makes them the choice for sun damaged skin in which skin sensitivity or breakouts are not a problem.

Beta hydroxyl acid is salicylic acid which is derived from aspirin and is oil soluble. Beta hydroxyl acid is best for oily skin that is prone to breakouts, blackheads and whiteheads. The acid is able to penetrate deep into the pores to exfoliate and clean. Furthermore, because Beta-hydroxyl acids are derived from aspirin they retain anti-inflammatory properties.

The level of hydroxyl acids in skin-care products should be at a minimum concentration of 5% to 10% and at a pH of 3 to 4 for it to be effective. Cosmetologists are able to use a solution of 20% to 30% and physicians can use up to a 70% concentration. A concentration of 20% is much like a microdermabrasion treatment where it actually erases fine lines and smoothes out the complexion. Normally this can be achieved in one to three applications and last 3 to 6 months to maintain a smooth complexion. A concentration of 50% to 70% will remove surface scars and fine lines and winkles and last two to five years. However at this concentration you could expect severe redness, flaking, and weeping up to four weeks or so. Remember, the higher the level of concentration the longer the recovery period. Consider an hydroxl acid as a very mild chemical peel at 5% to an intense peel at a 50% concentration or higher.

Hydroxyl acids can do wonders in sloughing off the dead skin and promoting new skin cell growth, although they do have their drawbacks. The major side effects of these acids are skin irritation and sun sensitivity. Skin irritation can be mild to extreme causing redness, burning, itching and possible scarring, especially on dark skin people. While hydroxyl acids can reverse the signs of aging such as brown, age spots and fine lines, you skin is left very susceptible to sun burn and sun sensitivity.

When using hydroxyl acids allow the acid to penetrate the skin then apply a sunscreen that contains UVA and UVB protection if going outdoors.

Sunscreens that are mixed with hydroxyl acids are usually ineffective. Additionally, be wary of buying products that claim to have either alpha or beta hydroxyl acids, for these acids to work they must have a concentration of 5% to 10% and a pH of 3 to 4, however this information is rarely seen on the labels.

Below are a few tips when purchasing an alpha or beta hydroxyl acid:
Do not buy a hydroxyl acid combined with a sunscreen
Consider a hydroxyl acid that includes a moisturizer, or an exfoliate with hydroxyl acid. Only use one skin care product with an hydroxyl acid to avoid skin irritation.
If possible, test the product with a pH test strip, the acid must have at least 3 to 4 pH in order for it to be effective.
Do not purchase cleansers with hydroxyl acids. The hydroxyl acid must have time to penetrate the skin to be effective.

For easy exfoliates, facial masks and facial peels you can easily make at home, visit Complete Skin Care Therapy

Check out this great microdermabrasion product at Skin Energizer
