The 'Joker' Virus Has Returned to Android: It Can Empty Your Bank Accounts Without You Noticing It and It Is Hidden in These Apps in the Google Play Store

The Belgian Police warned about the return of the 'Joker' virus , which attacks Android devices and hides itself in various applications on the Google Play Store . This malware is capable of subscribing the user to payment services without their authorization and emptying their bank accounts without them noticing.

"This malicious program has been detected in eight Play Store applications that Google has suppressed," say the Belgian authorities in a statement published this Friday on their website.

Bitcoin comes to UK PayPal - but not for payments.

PayPal customers in the UK will now be able to use the platform to buy, hold and sell cryptocurrency, with investments starting at £1.

But PayPal payments can still not be made in Bitcoin, for example, directly.

Instead, the cryptocurrency will have to be sold for traditional currency and its value then used to make a cash purchase.

PayPal is initially working with Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash.

But the currencies cannot be sent to friends or family or transferred to or from of any other digital wallet.

Entry point

PayPal launched its cryptocurrency service in the US, in October, hoping to make them more accessible to a wider audience.

But they remain volatile in value and unregulated - meaning investments are not protected by the authorities, if something goes wrong

"The tokens and coins have been around for a while but you had to be a relatively sophisticated user to be able to access that," a PayPal spokesman told CNBC.

"Having that on a platform like ours makes a really good entry point."

New Oculus Quest feature can automatically sync VR photos and video clips to your phone

Oculus has begun rolling out a set of new software features for Quest and Quest 2 virtual reality headsets. The v32 update introduces some small, but important tweaks to the in-headset user experience, as well as to the Oculus Move health tracking app. The feature that most piqued my attention is an option to automatically sync saved photos and videos captured within VR to the Oculus mobile app for iOS and Android.

In an earlier update, Oculus let you upload files from a headset through the Browser app within VR, an improvement over the original method of plugging the headset into a PC. But this update goes a step further in removing friction for viewing or sharing content, as it lets you do it without a headset on. To sync items from your headset (running v32 software, of course) to the app for the first time, open up the Files app from your Quest’s app library within the headset, then click the cloud icon that will appear at its top-right corner. It’ll ask you to turn on the syncing feature. Once you’re finished, your clips and pics will be viewable and shareable within the “Devices” pane in the Oculus mobile app.

Oculus has made a few other changes, including the ability to gift apps and games while you have a headset on. Previously (and frustratingly), gifting had to be done by the Oculus app or through a browser, but you can do it all in one place now.

If you like to chat with your Oculus friends while in virtual reality, you’ll soon find these contacts in the “People” tab within Facebook Messenger in VR, not as a separate section. Oculus contacts will be placed in the same list as your Facebook friends, but Oculus says that the friends you made in VR won’t be able to see Facebook activity unless you add them as friends on Facebook, so they remain separate despite how it may appear within the app.

Oculus told The Verge that this will be the new setup for everyone who installs the v32 software, though you can use a filter that can display your Oculus or Facebook friends instead of both.

Lastly, Oculus is making tweaks to its Move fitness platform that can monitor your movements within games to report metrics, much like a fitness tracker does. Instead of only tracking daily goals, Oculus added a new weekly goal metric that lets you select how many days you’re aiming to work out in VR each week. It’s also letting you share Oculus Move workout stats that you’re proud of to your Facebook timeline, groups, or within Messenger.

4. Interpretation. The micro, small and medium enterprise ministry launched a new portal for udyam registration www.udyamregistration.gov.in. Following the recommendations of the advisory council in this regard, the central government officially notifies certain criteria for classifying enterprises as micro, small, and medium enterprises, as shown in the table above.
5. The above said notification dated 26th of June 2020 suppress all the notifications issued earlier on the following dates: a. Notification no. s.o.1702 (E), dated the 1st of June, 2020, new criteria for classification of micro, small and medium enterprises b. Notification no. s.o. 2052 (E), dated the 30th of June, 2017, mandatory filing of Udyog aadhaar memorandum by all micro, small and medium enterprises. c. Notification no. s.o. 3322(E), dated the 1st of November, 2013, extension of the non-tax benefits to micro, small and medium enterprises for 3 years d. Notification no. s.o. 1722 (E), dated the 5th of October, 2006, the cost of some items are to be excluded while calculating the investment in plant and machinery.
6. Basis of calculation. Investment In-plant & machinery or equipment. 1. The cost of investment in plant, machinery, and equipment will be related to the cost of capital income tax return of the previous years filed under the income tax act of 1961. 2. In the case of a new business with no prior income tax return, the investment will be based on the promoter's self-declaration of the enterprise and such relaxation shall end after the 31st March of the financial year in which it files its first income tax return. 3. The terms "plant and machinery or equipment" and "plant and machinery or equipment of the enterprise" should have the same meaning as assigned to the plant and machinery in the income tax rules, of 1962 framed under the income tax act of 1961 and shall include all tangible assets other than land and building, furniture and fittings. 9. For classification, we used a combination of investment and turnover factors. 1. To classify an enterprise as micro, small, or medium, a composite criterion of investment and turnover must be used. 2. Chinese and Russian hackers were just sanctioned by Europe for the first time

The news: The EU imposed its first-ever sanctions for cyberattacks on Thursday. The action includes travel bans and asset freezes on individuals and organizations connected to ransomware and industrial espionage.

Retaliation for Russian attacks: The most prominent target is unit 74455 of Russia’s GRU military intelligence service, a group known as Sandworm. It is linked to the NotPetya ransomware attacks, which caused over $10 billion in damage.

China’s corporate espionage: In China, two citizens and a company, Haitai Technology Development, were sanctioned in connection with a hacking campaign known as Cloudhopper. The operation, carried out on behalf of Chinese intelligence services, targeted corporate secrets across six continents and is one of the most expansive espionage operations ever spotted. How an EU tax could slash climate emissions far beyond Europe

The big reveal: Last week, EU leaders approved the most aggressive climate-change plan in history. The text of the $2 trillion budget agreement called for introducing a “carbon border adjustment mechanism” by 2023. That’s EU-speak for a tax on imported goods produced in ways that emit more greenhouse-gas emissions than are allowed by EU manufacturers.

Makes sense: Without a carbon border tax, the EU could claim emissions reductions even as production of its goods simply shifts to other parts of the world, where they can be produced in cheaper and dirtier ways.

Bigger than Paris: In addition, it might lead to bilateral or trilateral trade deals that could achieve greater climate progress than international treaties like the Paris agreement, where any targets must be loose enough to get nearly 200 nations onboard.

Details, details: The detailed negotiations won’t begin until next year, and will require several layers of approvals. And the effort is sure to face a series of legal challenges, particularly from poorer nations. Read the full story.

The field of natural language processing is chasing the wrong goal

The outlook: Researchers are concerned about the core methods and objectives of natural-language processing (NLP), the branch of AI focused on creating systems that analyze or generate human language. Are these methods enough to achieve the field’s ultimate goals? What even are those goals?

What needs fixing: The way NLP is evaluated could be part of the problem. Researchers publish new data sets of even trickier questions, only to see even bigger neural networks quickly post impressive scores. But many people in the field are growing weary of such leaderboard-chasing. Do recent “advances” really translate into helping people solve problems? Such doubts are more than abstract fretting; whether systems are truly proficient at language comprehension has real stakes for society.

Where we go from here: To bring evaluations more in line with the targets, it helps to consider what holds today’s systems back. A human reading a passage will build a detailed representation of entities, locations, events, and their relationships—a “mental model” of the world described in the text. To construct more meaningful evaluations, NLP researchers should test whether an AI system is able to construct this sort of model. Read the full story.

The quest for quantum-proof encryption just made a leap forward

The issue: Many of the things you do online every day are protected by encryption so that no one else can spy on it. Your online banking and messages to friends are likely encrypted, for example—as are government secrets. But that protection is under threat from the development of quantum computers, which threaten to render modern encryption methods useless.

Getting ahead of the game: While modern encryption is still a long way from being broken, the US National Institute of Standards and Technology launched a competition in 2016 to develop new standards for cryptography that will be more quantum-proof. Winners won’t be announced until 2022, but last week the organization announced that it had narrowed the initial field of 69 contenders down to just 15.

A promising method: So far, a single approach to “post-quantum cryptography” accounts for the majority of the finalists: lattice-based cryptography. While public-key encryption uses traditional math to encode data, lattice-based cryptography instead uses enormous grids with billions of individual points across thousands of dimensions. Google’s Play Store is a home for millions of apps that make our phones useful in so many ways. And although Google is doing its best to make sure there aren’t any harmful apps on its app market, some inevitably slip through.

Luckily, Google isn’t the only company that’s on the lookout for mischievous apps. Cybersecurity company Evina is also searching and testing apps for any malware that might be lurking inside and recently posted a list of 25 apps that were stealing users’ Facebook credentials. The 4D Network is an attempt to eliminate the need for Internet Protocol that we know today. Internet Protocol is an old system that has some vulnerability and inefficiency as more applications are added to it. A 4D Network would restructure how packets of information are handled by following the 4 network planes:

Decision plane - creating a network configuration
Dissemination plane - getting information and sending out decision plane output to routers
Discovery plane - letting devices 'discover' their directly connected neighbors;
Data plane - directing the forwarding of network traffic.
