No, I'm not refering to the creepy photo that has been making the rounds on Facebook. I'm not writing a whole blog post about that.

The theme I'm using didn't change (I did that almost one year ago today!). The colours are the same. I'm still mapsgirl. The RSS feed didn't change. The crazy thing is that depending on how you got here, you won't even notice the change. That is kinda cool, because it means that people can't lose their way to my blog.

pandora's basement: opening the box

Some of you may remember that I started documenting the issues with our basement:

Here's a refresher in case you forgot, or are new and want to catch up:

Discovering the leak: when it rains it pours

That was back in March and April of last year.

I stopped talking about the basement. Once we started working on the inside, the issues started snowballing and I got completely overwhelmed. And a bit embarrassed. I didn't want to come across as a bad homeowner or a bad parent.

What we learned over the past year is too important not to tell the world.

Our friend Gemil is a Home Inspector, Certified Indoor Air Quality and Mold Inspector and owner of G1000 Home Inspections. He said that we needed to remove the drywall that had been wet because there was a risk of mold.

Just in case, he put up a protective wall of plastic so that dust and the potential mold spores wouldn't go everywhere. He did an air test to see if there were any mold spores in the air and sent that off to the lab.

Gemil started to take down the drywall and then with each step, the evil became more and more apparent.

Tim Hortons is getting bigger cups on Monday!

Last summer when we were camping in the US, Saturday morning we headed to the closest Tim Hortons. We put our orders in and I asked for what I always order, an XL Coffee with 2 milks and 2 sugars.

They handed me the biggest cup I had ever seen! It was bigger than the XLs in Canada!

I said to the barista -- "We need cups this size in Canada!"

My wish has come true!!

Here is the announcement from Tim Hortons....

Tim Hortons announced it will be brewing its biggest cup yet, with this month’s introduction of a brand new extra large cup.

Beginning January 23^rd, the new cup will offer coffee lovers across Canada a premium quality, extra large coffee at a value price.

To accommodate the brand new cup, the names of the other hot cup sizes have shifted: the original small is now extra small, the medium is now small and so forth. The change in names of the hot cup sizes will apply to all hot beverages - guests will still receive the same amount of coffee for the same price, only the name of the size has changed.

“We tested the names of the new hot cup sizes with our guests and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Our guests also told us that they love our small eight-ounce cup, so we will continue to offer that size,” said Dave McKay, Director of Brand Marketing for Beverages, Tim Hortons. “By shifting the sizes, we’re able to provide coffee lovers with a full range of five size options: from extra small, all the way up to the new extra large.”

car seats in the news - a horrible reminder

Please get your car seats checked and be sure you know how to use them correctly!!!

Last week, a child and their car seat was ejected from a car as a result of a collision.

Why? Because the child was not harnessed in the seat correctly and the seat was not installed properly.

"A five-month old baby is suffering serious injuries after being ejected from a car crash in the city's west end on Thursday.

According to police, the whole car seat was thrown off after a collision on Rutherford Rd., east of Islington Ave. in Woodbridge, just after 9:30 p.m.

The impact was felt on the side of the car the baby was in, however no one else was seriously hurt. "

If car seats are installed properly and used correctly, they save lives.

This is the reason why I am so diligent to get the message out to parents to get their car seats check and make sure they know how to use their car seats.

Beauty and the Beast 3D opens today!

Beauty and the Beast 3D opens in theaters today!!

It's been 20 years since Beauty and the Beast brought magic to the big screen and now it's back in 3D!

I remember going to see Beauty and the Beast when it first came out in 1991. I was 17 years old and it was a first date. I loved the movie, the songs, the story. I eventually owned the movie on VHS and had the soundtrack on CD.

When the movie was released on DVD last year, I purchased for the me the girls.They love the movie and now they are singing along to all the songs.

Last weekend, my family and I had the pleasure of seeing the advanced screening of Beauty and the Beast 3D. We were so excited!

I was a little apprehensive about the fact that it was 3D. How were they going to take a 2D movie and turn it into 3D? The CGI graphics of animated movies today are much different than the animated graphics from 20 years ago. But I put on my glasses and got goosebumps when I heard the music start.

Surprisingly the graphics were amazing! The 3D parts of the movie weren't obtrusive and didn't take away from the original feel of the movie. I tried very hard to find spots int he movie where you could tell that they changed the graphics during the 3D process. There were only a few spots that looked different from the original but I'm not going to point them out, because I'm sure most people aren't going to scrutinize the movie like I did. Most of the enhancements were subtle -- the dust floating in the beam of light, the puffs of smoke, the wind blowing. I would have to say that "Be Our Guest" is my favorite song and was always my favorite part of the movie; the 3D effects totally added to that scene! As you can tell, I loved it!

I hope that everyone goes to see the magic of Beauty and the Beast 3D. You won't be disappointed!

Oh, and as a special treat before the movie starts, you'll get to see the Tangled Ever After short film.

The new short spotlights the royal wedding of Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) and Flynn Rider – a.k.a Eugene (Zachary Levi).

TANGLED directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard bring back some of Disney’s most beloved characters when TANGLED EVER AFTER picks up where TANGLED left off. The Kingdom is in a festive mood as everyone gathers for the royal wedding of Rapunzel and Flynn. However, when Pascal and Maximus, as flower chameleon and ring bearer, respectively, lose the gold bands, a frenzied search and recovery mission gets underway. As the desperate duo tries to find the rings before anyone discovers that they’re missing, they leave behind a trail of comical chaos that includes flying lanterns, a flock of doves, a wine barrel barricade and a very sticky finale. Will Maximus and Pascal save the day and make it to the church in time? And will they ever get Flynn’s nose right?

the idiot's guide to irony?

Yesterday I blogged that I didn't know where my blog was going.

BigDaddy was confused when I got home. "Are you still blogging?" he asks.

"Yes, I'm still blogging. I just want to blog more for myself. I feel that I have deadlines to meet all the time. I need to make sure everything is balanced."

Let's backtrack to Sunday.... In my quest to learn Wordpress, I got "The Idiot's Guide to Wordpress" from the library. Even though I've learned a lot about Wordpress from building several sites, I wanted to start with the basics to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Last night I sat down to read... Chapter One: Blogging Basics. First line... "It all starts with a plan"

Irony: inconsistency between an actual and an expected result of a sequence of events

I expected to advance my knowledge in Wordpress and I get blindsided with the direction I was looking for.

So I could take 2 things from this. One... I'm an idiot when it comes to blogging or ...two... I'm on the right track. (Let's go with the 2nd)

Next step -- coming up with a plan.

This is probably a very strange thing for someone who calls themselves "mapsgirl" to ask. Yes, I am a cartographer (I draw maps) so I know how to get from one location to another.

I don't think Google Maps is going to be able to help me find the directions this time.

I'm not sure where this blog is going.

Up until now I've just let things happen; go with the flow. I started with small posts about life with my daughter. Then it became 2 daughters. I got opportunities to review products. Giveaways came next. Things were just happening.

Lately life has gotten busy and I don't seem to be blogging about life as much. There are a lot of great review, giveaway and promotional things coming my way which are always fun! But I'm feeling imbalanced. I'm feeling disconnected from my readers.

I think for 2012, I'll need to reevaluate; find a balance that feels good to me. There needs to be a plan; a vision.

Maybe someone could just point me in the right direction?

flying solo: I miss my teammate

Oh, these words could not be more true. This might be slight exaggeration, but it's my blog so there.

He's not gone forever and he is coming back.

Right now, BigDaddy is in Detroit having the most amazing experience with Ford Canada at the North American International Auto Show. He wrote this -- Heading to #NAIS in Detroit with Ford Canada

BigDaddy and I are a fantastic team and I miss him.

When he left on Sunday, I felt confident that two nights and three days without him would be easy. Well, I need my teammate. Sure, I'll make it through these days without him, but running this house is so much easier with him. I need back up when the girls decide that the kitchen is a good place for a WWE wresting match. I like it when I can say, "go talk to your father about that" because I know he'll give them the same answer I did.

Thank goodness for FaceTime because we've been able to chat a few times when he's been at the hotel. And the girls have been telling me things to text to him when I do get in touch with him.

I over heard Munchkin say, "Mommy's not happy. She's gonna text Daddy and he won't be happy."

My teammate will be home tomorrow but they have one more day of exciting things ahead of them.

I'm so excited for him. He's getting to see and do things that he's never done before. He's meeting new people and talking with the big wig executives of Ford. Very, very cool.

understanding the new Canadian car seat regulations (effective Jan 1, 2012)

I have had several people ask me about the new Canadian car seat regulations that take affect January 2012.

This change was supposed to take place January 2011, but was delayed for a year so that manufacturers could have time to make the changes they needed to make to all of their seats. Here is my blog from last year -- Canadian child car seats and what is happening in January 2011

This does not changes the Ontario Laws.

The Ontario Law still states that:

Rear-facing until 20lbs (with a recommendation of 1 year of age)
Forward-facing in a 5pt harness until 40lbs and 40"
Booster seat until age 8 or 4'9" or 80lbs

Yep, that's it. All of those number are on the very low side in my opinion. But those are the laws in Ontario.

So what are these new regulations?

As stated on CTV News:

Forward-facing child car seats will have to accommodate children weighing up to 66 pounds, instead of the current 48 pounds.

An infant will be defined as someone weighing up to 22 pounds, up from the current 20 pounds.

How does this affect you and your child?

It means that when you go buy a new seat after January 1, 2012, the car seat will have to abide by the new regulations listed above.

You do not need to get rid of your current seat. However, it cannot be resold (not that we recommend that anyway) because it may not abide by the new regulations.

There are many seats already on the market that meet the new regulations already. Britax and Diono are two manufacturers that have seats meeting the new standards. I'm sure there are others, but know these two off the top of my head.
