STOP TREKKING, PRAY INSTEAD-Buhari's Tells Youth

Mohammed Shehu, an aide to President-elect Muhammadu Buhari, has advised youths to pray instead of trekking for the incoming leader’s administration.

Mr. Shehu gave this advice during interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja on Monday.

According to him, the incoming administration acknowledges the excitement of youths over Mr. Buhari’s election but would prefer that
they channel their energies towards praying than embarking on, sometimes dangerous, journeys.

“It’s kind of overwhelming. Last week, I told youths to stay where they are, stop trekking, and pray for the incoming administration instead.

“We have a lot of challenges; light, unemployment, insecurity, and so on.

“So it is more profitable for them to stay where they are and pray instead of taking the dangerous risk of walking all the way to Abuja,’’ Mr. Shehu said.
On the allegation that the trekkers were ignored, Mr. Shehu said: “that is not true. Even outsiders have been bringing gifts and food for them out of goodwill.

“It is untrue that they have been ignored or starved and this is not the first batch but you know the problem with this kind of situation is that when others hear, they keep coming.”

Several young Nigerians have in the past weeks announced solidarity trekking from distant towns and cities to Abuja.

The only female among the group of 22, Lauratu Musa, said she took off from Kaduna eight days ago with her 15 year-old son, Adamu Abdullahi.
“I collected 28 goodwill letters from the various villages I lodged in on my way. This is my son, he was bitten on the way by plenty mosquitoes but we thank God we are here,’’ she said.

NAN reports that the trekkers, 22 in all, cut across various ages ranging from 20 to 63, and came from different parts of the country including Katsina, Kano, Adamawa, Yobe, Anambra and Kaduna States. (NAN)

GOVERNOR Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, in Benin City, Edo State, weekend, gave reasons why he disagreed with the planned country’s centenary celebration by the Federal Government, just as the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr. Samson Osagie, alleged plans by the Federal Government to present a bogus budget in the name of centenary celebration with a view to squandering the money. Governor Fashola and Osagie bared their minds on the proposed centenary celebration in Benin City, during a youth summit organised by the Edo State Government. Osagie said: “We have heard all the talk about Nigeria’s centenary. I do not understand except on the fact that those who are putting it together have an agenda to put bogus budget in order to squander it in the name of celebration.” On his part, Fashola expressed confusion over the planned centenary, insisting that the country was supposed to be celebrating 54 years of independence and not a hundred years as planned by the Federal Government. He said: “I have more questions to ask because all our teachers taught us is that Nigeria became a sovereign nation on October 1, 1960. And on Independence day, I participated in many national parade and I believe that about a few years ago, in 2010, we rolled out the drums celebrating our 50th Independence anniversary. “Then speeches were made, we all made promises including at the national level, that in 50 years time, Nigeria will be 100 and that was documented. And then three or four years after, suddenly we said there is a centenary. I don’t understand it, centenary of what? I want answers because I don’t know how we got to the 100, because we can then ask Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Enahoro and others that we are confused. “Our people said they wanted independence because of that some of them went to jail, but today they have changed the counter.”

A Chinese obstetrician has been given a suspended death sentence for stealing newborn babies and selling them to child traffickers. Zhang Shuxia was found guilty of abducting and selling seven babies in Fuping, Shaanxi province, the sentencing court said. She told parents their infants had serious diseases and convinced them to give up the babies, the court said. Zhang has been sentenced to death, with a two year reprieve. Suspended death sentences are normally commuted to life imprisonment in China. Zhang sold seven babies to child traffickers between November 2011 and July 2013, including a pair of twins, a judgement posted on the Weinan Intermediate People's Court's verified microblog on Tuesday said. Six of the babies were rescued, but one baby girl died. 'Fabricated reports' Zhang worked in Shaanxi's Fuping Maternal and Child Healthcare Hospital. "Zhang used her position as medical personnel to fabricate reports about the infants, saying they suffered from birth defects or diseases that were hard to cure," the court said in its judgement. "She abducted and sold several new-born infants, violating professional and social ethics," the judgement added. It is not yet clear whether Zhang will appeal, the court said. Zhang and several other suspects were arrested after the most recent abduction case in July. The parents reported the case to police after they suspected their baby had been trafficked. The baby was found and returned to his parents in early August. Police said they were still investigating 50 related cases, including 26 cases linked to Zhang, and several other suspects were in criminal detention, Xinhua news agency reported. Four other officials from the hospital are on trial for suspected dereliction of duty and are awaiting sentencing, Xinhua added. 'Unspeakable acts' Under China's strict population control policies, most couples can only have one child, and there is a strong preference for healthy baby boys. Earlier this month, China's top legislature formally adopted a resolution easing the country's one-child policy, allowing couples to have two children if either parent is an only child. On Chinese social media, netizens condemned Zhang's actions, with many calling for the death penalty. "She obliterated her humanity, and conducted unspeakable acts under a cloak of legality - only executing her will level the people's anger!" microblog user China Luo Jian wrote. However, user Wen Jin Rang wrote: "For such a criminal, sparing her life will serve a greater educational purpose than killing her." The Mexican government has announced that federal troops will take over security in an area where vigilante groups and a drugs cartel are clashing. The "self-defence groups" seized several small towns in the western state of Michoacan over the past week. They say they are fighting for the freedom of their communities from the notorious Knights Templar cartel. Mexican Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong urged the vigilantes to lay down their weapons. But he warned that there would be no tolerance for those who continued fighting. "Be certain we will contain the violence in Michoacan," he said after a meeting with state governor Fausto Vallejo in the regional capital, Morelia. The vigilantes have vowed to rid Michoacan of the Knights Templar cartel Mr Osorio Chong also encouraged the vigilantes to join the police forces. But the leader of one of the "self-defence groups," Estanislao Beltran, rejected that offer. "If we give up our weapons without any of the drug cartel leaders having been detained, we are putting our families in danger because they will come and kill everyone, including the dogs," said Mr Beltran. On Sunday, more than 100 vigilantes seized the small town of Nueva Italia. There were brief exchanges of fire with members of the Knights Templar cartel. Local police were searched and disarmed, and federal forces were nowhere to be seen. Dangerously cold arctic winds and snow blew across the United States on Monday, forcing schools and public transport to close and prompting officials to ask residents to stay indoors to avoid the deep freeze.

A shift in a weather pattern known as the "polar vortex" triggered a drastic drop in temperatures to lows not seen in two decades.

Comertown, Montana, recorded the lowest wind chill temperature at -63 Fahrenheit (-53 Celsius) – colder than the South Pole, which recorded a wind chill reading of -29 Fahrenheit.

Even the typically temperate Deep South was feeling the

chill, with warnings of a hard freeze threatening crops and livestock.

On the East Coast, rainstorms threatened to turn roads and sidewalks into ice rinks overnight as temperatures were expected to plunge.

The cold snap came after two massive winter storms snarled travel, grounded thousands of flights and dumped as much as two feet (60 centimetres) of snow in the first few days of the year.

More than 4,300 US flights were canceled Monday -- nearly half of those in Chicago -- and more than 6,500 were delayed, according to FlightAware.

The ciy of Chicago was among scores of municipalities which told parents to keep their children at home rather than risk sending them out into winds so bitter that skin could freeze in a matter of minutes.

The governor of Minnesota canceled school across the entire state on Monday.
Illinois Governor Pat Quinn declared a state of emergency and called up the National Guard to help rescue stranded motorists as high winds whipped up blinding snow.

"We are facing a dangerous combination of low temperatures, black ice and snow drifts," Quinn said, as he urged people to stay off the roads.

Quinn praised the "heroic" efforts of National Guard troops who cleared a 375-vehicle backup and a forestry officer who rescued seven stranded people and two of their pets using a snowmobile.

Deadly cold snap

At least 19 deaths have been blamed on the frigid weather, including a worker who was crushed by a 100-foot-high (30-metre-high) pile of salt being prepared to treat roads on Friday.

A 71-year-old woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease froze to death after getting lost in New York state while the body of another elderly woman, 90, was found face down in the snow next to her car in Ohio on Monday morning, the Toledo Blade newspaper reported.

At least a dozen other people were reportedly killed in crashes on icy roads, including four people whose sport utility vehicle slid off a rural Minnesota highway and fell into the Mississippi River.

Four Chicago men aged 48 to 63 died of apparent heart attacks while shovelling the snow over the weekend, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Officials in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, warned residents to stay indoors and urged schools to shut down as temperatures dropped to -12 Fahrenheit, with the wind chill making it feel more like -37.

"Police are reaching out to homeless citizens in order to help them find the nearest shelter," city spokeswoman Sarah DeRoo told AFP.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard barred everyone except emergency workers from driving at the height of the storm on Sunday and urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary on Monday.

"This extreme cold poses a serious health and safety risk," he warned.

But with thousands of people without power after electrical lines were felled, home was not always the best option. Those who couldn't stay with family or friends were urged to seek out community centres which were opened as temporary shelters.

The extreme cold disrupted flights and classes in Canada as well. In the Atlantic island province of Newfoundland, more than 30,000 people were without power.

Nationwide, officials warned of "treacherous" travel conditions, but meteorologists said a warming trend would begin mid-week.

US forecasters are warning that the freezing weather is heading east

North America's brutal cold snap is heading east, ushering in dangerous temperatures not seen in two decades, warn forecasters.
From Montana to Maryland, about half of the US population has been placed under a wind chill warning or advisory.

In Canada, the province of Ontario is facing temperatures of -40C (-40F) with wind chill.

Thousands of flights have been grounded, and residents told their skin could freeze if they go outside.

People on the US north-east coast were warned to

prepare themselves for the cold front sweeping in on Tuesday from the Midwest.

Temperatures were set to plummet overnight in New York and Washington DC by as much as 45 degrees, from unseasonably clement highs a day earlier.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that parts of major highways would be closed in preparation for the extreme weather, which could see the mercury plummet to -26C (-15F) overnight with wind chill.

The polar blast was threatening crops and livestock across the American farm belt, even in the usually temperate Deep South.

Meteorologists said some 187 million people in all would be able to feel the effects of the cold snap by Tuesday.

It has been widely blamed on a shift in the weather pattern known as the "polar vortex".

In Comertown, Montana, on Monday the temperature sank to -53C (-63F) with wind chill.

The state of Minnesota saw the mercury plummet to -48C (-56F) by the same measure.

The South Pole, and Irkutsk, Siberia, by comparison, jointly basked in a relatively balmy -33C.

More than 4,500 US flights were cancelled just on Monday in the US because of the extreme weather.

JetBlue Airways suspended nearly all operations at airports in Boston and around New York City until midday on Tuesday.

Ice-breakers were deployed to Lake Michigan

The state of Minnesota and the city of Chicago, Illinois, have ordered all schools closed.

It was so cold that even the polar bear at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo was kept indoors, CNN reports.

Public parks were also shut as officials warned that exposed flesh could become frostbitten.

Nearly 1,000 homes in Newfoundland, Canada, were still without electricity on Monday after a power outage.

Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips told the Globe and Mail newspaper: "The weather gods are out to punish you."

The Ankara police shake-up is the largest so far

Turkey has sacked 350 police officers in the capital Ankara, following a corruption probe targeting people close to the government, reports say.

Officials, mostly from outside the city, have been named to replace them.

Hundreds of police have been dismissed or reassigned across the country since last month's corruption investigation. Three cabinet ministers resigned after their sons were detained in the raids.

The prime minister has accused the police and judiciary of

a "dirty plot".

The arrests were carried out as part of an inquiry into alleged bribery involving public tenders, which included controversial building projects in Istanbul.

Those detained in the 17 December raids included more than 50 public officials and businessmen - all allies of the prime minister.

'Political plotting'

The latest round of police sackings and reassignments were carried out under a government decree published at midnight.

Those removed from their posts include chiefs of the financial crimes, anti-smuggling and organised crime units, the private Dogan News Agency reported.

The move comes as the government is trying to contain the fall-out from the corruption inquiry.

Many believe the arrests and firings reflect a feud within Turkey's ruling AK Party between those who back Mr Erdogan, and supporters of Fethullah Gulen, an influential Islamic scholar living in self-imposed exile in the US.

Members of Mr Gulen's Hizmet movement are said to hold influential positions in institutions such as the police, the judiciary and the AK Party itself.

Mr Erdogan has said he would not allow "political plotting".

An Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ court, yesterday, remanded a man believed to be pastor and four others for allegedly breaking into a shop in the city and carting away goods worth N6.5 million.

The accused are Peter Olawale, 34; Sunday Job, 27; Ajagbe Babatunde, 25; Olaiya Saidi, 23; and Adedeji Musibau, 24.

The Chief Magistrate, Adebayo Lasisi, said the men should be remanded in Ilesha prisons until their bail application is considered.

The prosecutor, Inspector Isiaka Ajadi, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on December 22, 2013 at 10.30 p.m. at Igbona area of Osogbo.

He said the men broke into a shop and a warehouse belonging to

one Josephat Onwubufo.

According to Ajadi, they stole 40 laptops, 16 digital cameras and memory cards valued at N6.5 million.

He said they also stole 62 mobile phones valued at N484,950 belonging to one Egwuogu Uche from the shop.

He noted that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9), 413 (1), (2), 417(c) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun 2003.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

Counsel to the accused, Mr Hasheem Abioye, Mrs Muslimat Nagode and Miss Olatunbi Tobi, urged the court to grant them bail.

The prosecutor, however, opposed the bail on the grounds that the amount involved was big and that the accused were not resident in Osun, saying: “If they are granted bail they may jump bail.”

Ruling on the bail application has been adjourned to January 17.

The Joint Health Sector Unions, in league with the Assembly of Health Sector Professionals, yesterday, directed its members to proceed on a 5-day warning strike from Wednesday January 15, to Tuesday January 21, 2014, except government addresses their grievances through constructive dialogue.
Stating their grievances/prayers in a jointly signed position paper presented on contemporary developments in the health sector, the workers, comprising pharmacists, nurses, physiotherapists, radiographers and laboratory scientists among others, insisted that the dialogue
with the President is the minimum and non-negotiable conditionality, as the President, who they described as “the father of the nation”, must be willing to give all his children a listening ear in a conflict that continues to fester as a rotten and infected wound.
Spokesperson of the group, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, Pharm Olumide Akintayo, warned: “In the event that government does not enter into meaningful dialogue within two weeks of this notice, we shall be left with no option than to commence a more excruciating and total nationwide strike to enforce our liberties.
Noting that the declaration was a follow-up to the expiration of the 15-day ultimatum earlier given, Akintayo stated: “We call on all men and women of goodwill to admonish government on the need to urgently redress this avoidable crisis it has also assisted to worsen.”

The kidnappers of Olali, six-year-old son of the former chairman of Yenagoa Local Government Area and ex-Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development in Bayelsa State, Mr. Godknows Powell, have demanded N50 million to set him free.
The boy was abducted on new year day at the Etegwe suburb of
Yenagoa by some gunmen while returning from a church service with his mother.
The kidnappers, weekend, established contact with their victim’s family.
According to a security source, the abductors whose whereabouts were still unknown warned the victim’s family against involving security agencies in their negotiations.
The source who pleaded anonymity said the hoodlums insisted on N50 million ransom.
“We know the kidnappers will reduce their ransom. It is their normal practice. They always place high amount of money on their victims only to reduce it later through negotiation,” he said, adding that the police are working round the clock to rescue the boy.

No injuries were reported, but officials are urging people from the nearby town of Casselton - some 2,300 people - to evacuate as a precaution. An investigation into the incident has been launched. A spokeswoman for the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services said the last 50 wagons of the train had been uncoupled, but another 56 remained at risk. The derailment, after a
collision involving another goods train, is reported to have happened near an ethanol plant. Emergency and fire-fighting crews have been sent to the scene. Cass County sheriff's office said it was "strongly recommending" that residents in parts of Casselton and anyone living five miles (8km) to the south and east evacuate. Officials say several wagons of the train had been knocked off the tracks Residents said the heat from the explosion could be felt from the town of Casselton The accident happened at around 14:00 local time on Monday afternoon The train carrying crude oil was pulling 106 wagons Officials have said a change in weather patterns could expose residents to smoke and possible health hazards. Residents within 10 miles of the scene are being asked to stay indoors. A shelter for those evacuated has been set up in Fargo, about 25 miles away. Casselton resident Eva Fercho said she first noticed black smoke and then heard two explosions, WDAY News reported. "I could almost feel the house shake... it was loud," she said. Correspondents say it is the latest in a string of incidents that have raised alarm about a rise in crude oil traffic on the railways. In July a train carrying oil from the Bakken oil region in North Dakota derailed near the Canadian town of Lac Megantic, killing more than 40 people.
