Hey all...! I'm going to discuss about LIGHTS as in lighting fixtures today. Well this is a project work from my student days and i hope you find some interesting and relevant stuff for yourself.

TYPES OF LIGHTS

There are two types of lights :

~ NATURAL that we get as sunlight in homes through windows, doors, balconies, glass roof or any opening in the house.

~ ARTIFICIAL that we install in our homes to illuminate areas with less natural lighting and during nights.

DIWALI - the TRUE MEANING

Deepavali is an Indian festival and popularly known as the "festival of lights", but the most significant spiritual meaning is "the awareness of the inner light". Central to Hindu philosophy is the assertion that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Deepavali as the "victory of good over evil" refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening comes compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings anand (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Deepavali is the celebration of this Inner Light.

While the story behind Deepavali and the manner of celebration varies from region to region (festive fireworks, worship, lights, sharing of sweets), the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light (Atman) or the underlying Reality of all things (Brahman).

This festival is celebrated with fireworks, worshiping lord ganesha and goddess laxmi, gifting and sharing sweets and decorating homes. I am sharing a few things that I would want to do on this diwali hoping they might become a part of your decor this festive season :

Candles are also used in this festival to light up home, variety of candles can be used for this purpose. Use candles in such a way that they blend with the decor and give your home an ethnic touch.

Candles can also be made at home like crayon candles, gel candle and also candle holders can be customized at home with bangles, mirrors, sequins, beads, paints, ribbons, etc

lighting can be done by either LED or bulb light ropes/ strips/ net etc. These lights come in various colors, patterns, forms and designs.

Flowers used during this festival are fragrant and vitalize the senses. flowers like marigold and jasmine are more often used, but rose, zarbera, sunflower can be used to add color. flowers can be used in different places like with floating candles or in a pot of water or filled in a jar or strands hung through out the place or wrapped on stair rail/ door knob/ furniture or hung in a net bag or hung to the ceiling or against walls etc.

rangoli

rangoli making is a part of indian tradition during diwali. it is usually made by arranging different colored substances to make an abstract or a beautiful pattern.

rangoli can be made on floor or in water, water rangoli is usually made by flower arrangement in water while that on floor can be made from colors, colored rice, husk, flowers, spices, flour etc.....

diyas or floating candles can be added for illumination and beauty.

also readymade rangoli stickers are available which can be directly glued to the floor or rangoli stencils are available for people not expert in rangoli making.

Toran is an Indian door hanging which is all about those who live within and those who visit. It is almost the first thing a visitor sees even before the door to the house is opened. It is strung across the top of the frame that makes an Indian doorway.

Diwali is the festival of Laxmi, the Goddess of prosperity and wealth. It is believed that Goddess Laxmi visit everyone during Diwali and brings peace and prosperity to all. On the night of Diwali "Lakshmi-Pujan" is performed in the evenings. A traditional Pujan is performed after sunset in all the homes.

Five pieces of ghee diyas (lamps) are lit in front of the deities, naivedya of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess and devotional songs are sung in praise of Goddess Laxmi. After Deepawali Puja people light diyas (lamps) in their homes to usher in light and clear the darkness from the world.

MAJORLY BEDS!!

Alright friends this post is about BEDS and actually a long list of beds used worldwide.

A bed is a piece of furniture meant for sleep or rest,it majorly comprises of a framework with a mattress and coverings.

PARTS

Framework : made mostly of wood/ metal and attached to head and footboard. matress rests on framework. it can be either a solid base made of wooden slats or a spring base.

Headboard : is a part of bed that attaches to the framework on the head side.

Side rail/ Safety rail : it is generally added for extra safety in hospital or kids bed.

Foot board : it is an upright panel on the foot of the bed. it may or may not be present.

Legs/ Feet : they are the supporting structures which keep the bed off the ground ranging from few inches to a feet and some inches. they are named according to the raise in height.

WHAT'S BETTER THAN A GLASS WALL

Hey everyone!!

So today i'm going to discuss a little about my own project and presentation work during my interior designing studies, thats GLASS and variants of glass that can be used in interior designing and believe me people glass,if used correctly might become the most relevant and the most attractive part of it.

Glass is a chemically inert, brittle, hard & transparent material…with a wide use in interior designing of a space…

WHAT'S GLASS MADE UP OF

>> It is mainly composed of QUARTZ ( silica),now-a-days it is generally added with sodium bicarbonate & calcium oxide to decrease its melting point & thereby reducing its manufacturing cost…this type is k/a soda lime glass.

>> Other components can be added for different purposes :

* cerium(lV)oxide absorbs UV rays

* flint glass has lead for more refractive index i.e. sparkle

* pyrex glass has barium for better thermal and electrical properties & sparkle

CATEGORIES

>>Transparent glass – *is completely see through * Includes plain, float, toughened, laminated glasses

>>Translucent glass - *allows limited light to pass through * includes patterned, tinted glasses

>> Opaque glass - *allows no light to pass through *this type is resistant to scuffing & scratching *has high gloss finish & also used for hard decoratives *Includes milky white, reflective, acid etched glasses

VARIETY TO LOOK FOR

§ Clear sheet glass –*is plain glass drawn vertically from tank of molten glass *Used as ordinary glass for door, shelves, windows *Also used in making accessories to decorate room

§ Polished plate glass -* is roughcast glass that is ground & polished to produce a smooth surface *Used in making mirrors, shelves, tabletops…

§ Float glass – is molten glass floated on bed of molten tin to give flat smooth surface…

§ Tinted glass – is semicoloured to absorb solar radiation or reduce glare & heat build up. Mostly in black/ brown/ blue/ green/ grey/ bronze shades…

§ Wired polished plate(Georgian wire)- has a wire incorporated in it which holds the glass together if it breaks. also this variety is FIRE RESISTANT.

§ Colored /stained glass – is a glass with various colored patterns & designs for esthetics *They can be used in partitions,doors, windows *They act as highlighters and create a focal point…

§ Patterned glass – translucent glass that has linear or geometric or any pattern embossed usually on one & sometimes on both sides.

§ Reflective glass – plain glass with a transparent coating of metal in order to reflect sunlight & reduce heating effect… available in various shades..

§ Insulating glass – two layers of glass are separated by hermetically sealed airspace to provide thermal insulation & restrict condensation…

§ Cullet – is the broken glass that is recycled to make glass containers, used in golf bunkers, manufacture of brick, ceramic. For water filtration, as abrasive.

§ Toughened /Tempered glass – made by heating & suddenly cooling the glass which tempers it.

*Also k/a SAFETY glass.. If breaks, splits into tiny pieces thereby reducing the harm caused…

* 4 x harder, therefore IMPACT RESISTANT

* Thermal stress resistant

* Wind load resistant

* Available in 8 & 12 mm sheets

* Used in glass walls, balustrades, security areas, escalator side panels, windows, doors, bath screens, tabletops…

§ Laminated glass – is a combination of 2 or more layers of glasses with a plastic like film made of PVB (Polyvinyl butyral ). The plastic film/s are placed b/w glass layers which adhere to each other & gain high strength..The glass splits into tiny particles but does not fall off ‘coz of film..The strength is so high that impact as high as bullet can’t pierce & so k/a Bulletproof glass / Security glass.. It is used in high security areas, balustrades, etc...

§ Other variety

*glass tile mosaic - small pieces of glass arranged to form various patterns,shapes and designs.These tiles have become popular for both field and accent tiles. They have potential to impart intense color and reflect light, and are impervious to water.

*fused glass -glass that has been fired (heat-processed) in a kiln at a range of very high temperatures

*glass brick - also known as glass block, it provides visual obstruction while admitting light. It is sound proof and acts as an insulator because the brick is hollow on inside

*lacquered glass - is coloured and opaque in appearance and is produced by depositing and then baking a highly durable and resistant lacquer to one side of the glass.

*stacked glass - consists of many layers of precisely placed glass stacked and deep carved to form a three dimensional structure.

*filled glass – filling can be glass small or large, marble, stones, wooden shavings, chips etc.

*bent glass - is a normal glass, which is curved with a special process. It can be used for external sites, such as facades, shop fronts, panoramic lifts etc.

*Fiberglass - consists of fine but solid rods of glass, each of which may be less than one-twentieth the width of a human hair. These tiny glass fibers can be loosely packed together in a woollike mass that can serve as heat insulation. It is used for electrical insulation, chemical filtration, making furniture, roofing and firefighters' suits. Fiberglass is a popular curtain material because it is fire-resistant and washable.

I guess that's quite information regarding glass...... I'm sure there are plenty of them that i've missed and if anybody knows more about this, please, don't hesitate writing. After all knowledge is what we crave for.... :)

MY FIRST POST

Hi reader, this is my first post of the blog and i'm really really nervous about what exactly should i write but i think should start with something that I've always loved and considered vital to myself and that's CANDLES. candles give peace to senses - one can see(beautiful colors and flame), smell(aroma), touch(ultra smooth wax body) and feel(warmth) the beauty of it. lighting a candle calms down the senses and fills it with bundles of positive energy which ultimately gives peace.
