Would you like your painting included in the next Northwich Calendar?

Next year’s calendar, produced again by VAC and DAN Community, will contain paintings of Northwich and surrounds. We already have half of the pictures - up to 6 more paintings are needed.

If you have a painting (your own work) which you would like VAC to consider for inclusion in the calendar please submit a jpeg to visualartscheshire@gmail.com.

Please include the location and the unframed dimensions. Your painting needs to be in landscape orientation. It should be suitable for a calendar and should be recognisably of Northwich or surrounds (eg Barnton, Weaverham, Comberbach, Anderton, etc).

We need your jpeg submission by 7 October.

We are not able to pay for your images but artists whose work is chosen will receive a calendar and be invited to the launch event. Please contact VAC on the email above with any queries.

DAN Community in association with Visual Arts Cheshire invite submissions for a photographic exhibition, entitled ‘Celebrating Northwich Heritage’, to be held in The Plaza Cinema during Heritage Open Weekend (11-13 September 2015).

We are looking for recently taken photographs (colour or B&W) which reflect Northwich’s heritage.

All entries will be subject to a selection process. Selected images will be displayed online, in The Plaza exhibition and in Northwich Library. Submissions are limited to 3 per person – there is no entry fee.

We will need high resolution jpegs with your email entry. The photographs must be your own. By entering your photos, you are agreeing to their use by DAN/VAC as specified above. Copyright of your images remains with you. The selected images will be printed by DAN/VAC.

Entries are required by email to northwichheritage@gmail.com.

Please include your name, and for each image submitted we will need the image title and / or description. Please ensure that we can match up the titles with the jpegs.

The deadline for submission is Monday 31 August. The outcome of the selection process will be notified to all entrants. We expect a lot more entries than we will be able to exhibit.

We will probably receive lots of photos of the Northwich black & white buildings, Town Bridge, Salt Works etc. This will be fine but it may be worth looking for other heritage subjects to give your pictures a better chance of selection.

The Plaza Cinema Exhibition

During the recent Northwich Art Trail Exhibition and Heritage Open Days at the Plaza Cinema in Northwich, visitors left their memories of visiting The Plaza as children, and comments on the exhibition and building.

The Plaza was opened in 1929, and is Grade II Listed. It ceased to be a cinema in the mid 1960s, and was used for bingo until 2011.

I have never been inside, but I can see it would be a superb theatre, with some atmosphere and character. I do hope this can come about before the building deteriorates and the inevitable happens!

My husband remembers it well, as he was born and brought up locally. He recalls arranging to meet a girl on the steps one evening. He got there first, but his mates arrived so he had a change of heart and went in with them, instead of waiting for his 'date'.

Not long after the film had started the 'stood up' one located him in the cinema and smacked his face! Cue for hilarity from his mates. He can't remember whether they were all thrown out or just roundly told off by the Manager. I admire the girl's spirit though!

The Northwich Art Trail is now in its fourth year and this year it is again being run by Visual Arts Cheshire.

The Art Trail is an open art exhibition. Rather than being hosted in one gallery, it is hosted by the participating retailers in Northwich town centre – over 50 shops are taking part this year.

There will be more than 30 artists with a total of 100+ pieces of art for you to discover. The art will be mostly in the windows but some will be in the interiors. All of the work is for sale and you can also vote for your favourite exhibit (in the shop where it is displayed).

So please follow the trail and support our local retailers and artists. There will be prizes for the Best Picture and the runner up, as voted for by the VAC committee.

We are most grateful to the Northwich Art Shop for their generosity in providing the prizes.

Once upon a time... The End.

Well, we are looking for something a little longer than that in our quest for Northwich’s most entertaining tale.

Which is why Ourtown Magazine and Northwich LitFest are...

CALLING SHORT STORY WRITERS

This is your chance to let your imagination flow, a chance to win £50, to have the opportunity to have your story published in Ourtown and read by over 20,000 readers and to play a part in the annual LitFest in the summer.

Here’s what you have to do:
• Our competition is for a short story of up to 1,000 words.
• It can be of any genre - romance, thriller, mystery, science fiction... wherever your imagination takes you.
The only catch... Your story has to begin with the following lines:

"With a sharp intake of breath, he turned to her in disbelief..."

or

"As the door closed slowly and silently behind her..."

The Judges and the Prize:
Author Susi Osborne and Viv Roberts, who together organise much of the Lit Fest, will select our winner who will receive a £50 WHSmith book token. The winner will be announced at a LitFest event on June 1.

How to Enter:
• Stories must be no longer than 1,000 words. There is no minimum length.
• Submission is by email to: ourtownmagazine@btconnect.com
• The words Short Story Entry should appear in the subject line of your email.
• We are unable to accept paper copies. Stories should be written as a Word attachment and given the writer’s own title.
• The name of writer must not appear on the manuscript.
• Your name, address, phone number and the title of the story must appear in the body of the email. This enables the judges to read the stories anonymously.
• Deadline for entry is Friday 8 May 2015.
• Entry is free and the competition is open to anyone age 16 or over; one entry per person.
