BMW Group Middle East reports sustained growth in first quarter of 2011

BMW Group Middle East has completed the first three months of 2011 with a 19% sales growth over the same period in 2010. The world's most successful premium automotive manufacturer delivered 4,635 BMW and MINI vehicles to customers across 14 Middle East markets, confirming the strength of both brands in the region.

Following record success in 2010 that saw the Group deliver the highest volume of vehicles since the company commenced Middle East operations in 1994 - the latest results reveal sustained growth in the first three months of 2011 across most importer markets. These included Abu Dhabi, the highest volume market, where sales increased 42% (1,091 cars); Dubai 38% growth (1,081 cars); while Oman saw sales improve 19% (173 cars) and Saudi Arabia by 11% (819).

BMW: New model launches set to drive sales further

The new BMW 5 Series, launched in March 2010, was the top selling model with 1,055 cars sold, followed closely by the company's flagship BMW 7 Series that saw 1,046 cars sold. The BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe and X5 Sports Activity Vehicle continue to be amongst the top selling cars with 694 and 634 cars sold respectively. The BMW 3 Series, the world's best selling premium car, continues its success story with 647 cars sold.

The ongoing success comes on the back of an active first quarter for BMW Group Middle East in which two new BMW models were launched; the third generation BMW 6 Series Convertible and the all new BMW X3. Entering a new era in driving dynamics and innovative technology, the second generation BMW X3 has a totally new exterior and interior design and has already secured two global awards including the Four-wheel Drive Car of the Year 2011 by Auto Bild Allrad, and Favourite SUV by readers of German magazine Off Road. Similarly, the new head turning BMW 6 Series Convertible that arrived in the region in March, offers stylish design, outstanding performance, luxury and sheer driving pleasure.

MINI: brand's popularity grows

MINI also recorded exceptional sales growth during the first three months of 2011, achieving 81% growth across eight Middle East markets with sales of 210 cars. Markets that performed well included Dubai with an increase of 178%, Abu Dhabi with 76% growth, Kuwait with 54%, Qatar 78% and Oman with 50% growth. The MINI Hatch continues to be the best selling MINI model and January's launch of the new MINI Countryman was a strong contributing factor to the company's first quarter success. The fourth MINI family member continues to make waves across the region with its innovative use of space and unique 4 door design and 4 wheel drive capabilities. The new MINI Countryman appeals to customers who appreciate MINI but are looking for a bit more MINI, and a MINI which goes far beyond urban boundaries.

BMW Premium Selection: Steady growth continues

Another area of the business that saw growth for BMW Group Middle East was BMW Premium Selection, the company's pre owned car programme that offers customers the same peace-of-mind motoring as if they were purchasing a new BMW. 639 vehicles were sold during the first quarter through BMW Premium Selection in eight markets, representing a growth of 19%. Qatar was the biggest seller of BMW Premium Selection, recording a 121% increase, followed by Dubai at 60%, Kuwait with 29%, Saudi Arabia at 21% and Abu Dhabi, with an increase of 18%.

Reiner Braun added, "The drive for success and hunger for further growth will dominate the coming months for the BMW Group in the Middle East. And to continue that momentum we will be welcoming more exciting new models to the region; these will include the BMW 6 Series Coupé, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé, BMW M5 and the MINI Coupé. "There is a reason why they're called the ULTIMATE driving machines"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

So far I have not experienced any problems with my car. In fact all I have had to do was fill it with gas and drive. I do have some minor gripes, but they are to be expected from a car of this age and mileage.

1. Sometimes the sunroof acts goofy when I attempt to close it; it will get close to closing, then retract back to open. When this does happen, I just give it a few more minutes to make up its mind.

2. Power steering fluid sometimes overflows from the canister. I've had this checked, and was told that this is pretty common because of the design of the lid. I keep an eye on it, and have never had to refill it.

3. Sometimes I notice a very faint burning smell. I took it to a BMW specialist, who found a very small leak around the seal. He advised me not to worry about it, because the leak is very small. According to him "It would take about 6 months for a half of a quart to leak out." I haven't experienced any spills in the driveway, so I'm trusting his knowledge, all while saving up some 'future repair cash'.

General comments?

This is my 6th car and 1st BMW/European vehicle. My 04 Maxima was stolen, so after my insurance paid the lein holder, I decided to use the leftover cash to buy something straight out instead of financing.

While I have appreciated the strengths of my previous vehicles, nothing has put a smile on my face like my 323. I bought this vehicle from its original owner, who had always had it serviced by BMW, and they had the paperwork to prove it. Not to mention the original window sticker, all of the manuals, CDs, and keys. And I got it well below KBB and NADA estimates :)

It handles like a dream, and the gas mileage is great. I love that it is so well balanced, and driving this car for me is intuitive. I find myself just going for random drives all of the time.

Although this is a coupe and I am 6 feet tall, I have no complaints about space. Keep in mind that I don't have any children, and I'm usually in the car by myself with the occasional 1 or 2 passengers. I have been able to travel comfortably with 4 people in the vehicle for long trips.

The sport suspension may be a bit too stiff for some, but it's just right for me. Not too soft, not too firm, you can drive this thing on rough city streets and not pay for it with back spasms later. You're talking to guy that drove a 00 Mustang for four trouble free years. However it was not nearly as comfortable.

I must admit that I had apprehensions, because my 04 Maxima had a larger engine and about 100 more horses. Let me tell you, the power from the 2.5 is more than adequate, so don't let numbers fool you into thinking that the 3 won't move. If it's not quick enough, you can always upgrade parts or get an M3 ;)

Contrary to expectations, next-gen Cadillac CTS will offer coupe model

Cadillac has apparently changed its plans for the next-generation CTS yet again, confirming the development of a coupe to fill out the rest of the line when it arrives in 2013. This comes after reports that Caddy's mid-level fighter would only be offered in sedan form.

Fighting it out for the hears and wallets of coupe and convertible buyers was originally going to be left to Cadillac's upcoming BMW 3 Series competitor, currently codenamed the ATS. The rationale was that a more traditional coupe roofline and folding convertible top would integrate into the ATS's rump more smoothly than the angular CTS. For the next generation CTS, Motor Trend says Cadillac is changing the car's underpinnings from the current Sigma platform to the Alpha rear-drive platform, which will also see duty under the next Chevrolet Camaro.

Rumor has is that Cadillac is working on an even more radical design for the next-generation CTS Coupe, which will likely share its doors with the Camaro. And as we've heard so many times before, there may be a low-volume flagship model from Cadillac, nosing its way past the six-figure price point.

Rumormill: BMW 3 Series GT could actually be new 4 Series

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé concept

We've heard a few times that BMW is working on a 3 Series Gran Turismo, but a rumor floated at Germany's Auto Motor und Sport claims the GT may instead be an all-new 4 Series. If true, BMW Blog says that a 4 Series could be offered as a four-door coupe that would help BMW compete with offerings like the A5 Sportback. The move would also enable BMW to offer a more stylish vehicle that slots well below the 6 Series in price while still demanding a premium over the 3 Series. And keep in mind that BMW has already green-lit the 6 Series Gran Coupe, which will feature two-door styling and four physical doors when it arrives in 2012.

Given that Audi has feverishly expanded its lineup the past few years, we wouldn't blame BMW for countering with a 4 Series, but this is the first we've heard of it, so we'll keep this one squarely in the rumormill category for now.

Govt move will make them increase investments in India

Mumbai, March 27: Foreign car-makers would have to advance their investment plans to set up full manufacturing facilities in the country, as a follow through of the Government's move to triple import duty to 30 per cent for cars imported as completely knocked down (CKD) units (with pre-assembled power train parts).

An official from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) told Business Line, “Auto companies, which had more long-term plans for full-scale production in India, would now have to advance them to a much earlier date, maybe as early as the next three months. They will have to set up an engine plant in India.

“The automakers understand what the Government wants and are reconciling to the fact that this has to be done now and there's no way around it.”

Global auto majors, mostly in the premium-end, such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi assemble their higher selling models in India from CKD kits, while other models are imported as completely built units (CBUs). Even Renault, Volkswagen and Jaguar Land Rover's upcoming plans may may be impacted.

The CKD rate

Before March 1 this year, all CKDs attracted 10 per cent customs duty, while CBUs were charged 60 per cent customs. However, a customs notification dated March 24, 2011 has increased the import duties to 30 per cent for passenger cars imported as CKDs, which also have an “engine, gearbox and transmission mechanism in pre-assembled form but not mounted on a chassis or a body assembly.”

CKD imports where the powertrain parts are not pre-assembled would still attract 10 per cent customs, while the duty for CBUs remains the same. The March 24 notification is actually lower than the original proposal for a 60 per cent import duty on CKDs with pre-assembled power train parts, which is on par with CBUs.

While a price increase for few models could be expected, an industry official said companies may look to absorb part of the increased costs till an engine plant is ready. Models immediately affected include the Mercedes-Benz C, E and S Class, the BMW 3, 5 Series and the X1 and Audi's A4, A6 and Q5.

Everybody needs a place to keep their secrets and work on obscure projects. Lockheed Martin has their Skunk Works, where black projects such as the SR-71 and F-117 Nighthawk were developed. Superman has the Fortress of Solitude, where he keeps the bottle city of Kandor and his Phantom Zone projector. And BMW has Plant Zero.

Hidden deep within their R&D center in Munich, Plant Zero is where BMW builds all their one-off prototypes. While it's not the sort of place they're likely to let outsiders run around freely, Bimmer has decided to give us a carefully controlled peek inside the facility (though they have redacted out some of the For-German-Eyes-Only sights, like what appears to be a BMW 3 Series GT prototype). It's definitely one of the coolest videos we've seen from a car maker in a while...not the least because the narrator sounds like the same guy who provides voice overs for all those Discovery Channel documentaries about Area 51.

Cautions & Warnings

WARNINGS-

Some repairs may be beyond your capability. If you lack the skills, tools and equipment, or a suitable workplace for any procedure described in this manual, we suggest you leave such repairs to an authorized dealer service department or other qualified shop.

Do not re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Many fasteners are designed to be used only once and become unreliable and may fail when used a second time. This includes, but is not limited to, nuts, bolts, washers, self-locking nuts or bolts, circlips and cotter pins. Always replace these fasteners with new parts.

Never work under a lifted car unless it is solidly supported on stands designed for the purpose. Do not support a car on cinder blocks, hollow tiles or other props that may crumble under continuous load. Never work under a car that is supported solely by a jack. Never work under the car while the engine is running.
If you are going to work under a car on the ground, make sure that the ground is level. Block the wheels to keep the car from rolling. Disconnect the battery negative terminal (ground strap) to prevent others from starting the car while you are under it.
Never run the engine unless the work area is well ventilated. Carbon monoxide kills.
Rings, bracelets and other jewelry should be removed so that they cannot cause electrical shorts, get caught in running machinery, or be crushed by heavy parts.
Tie long hair behind your head. Do not wear a necktie, a scarf, loose clothing, or a necklace when you work near machine tools or running engines. If your hair, clothing, or jewelry were to get caught in the machinery, severe injury could result.
Do not attempt to work on your car if you do not feel well. You increase the danger of injury to yourself and others if you are tired, upset or have taken medication or any other substance that may keep you from being fully alert.
Illuminate your work area adequately but safely. Use a portable safety light for working inside or under the car. Make sure the bulb is enclosed by a wire cage. The hot filament of an accidentally broken bulb can ignite spilled fuel, vapors or oil.
Catch draining fuel, oil, or brake fluid in suitable containers. Do not use food or beverage containers that might mislead someone into drinking from them. Store flammable fluids away from fire hazards. Wipe up spills at once, but do not store the oily rags, which can ignite and burn spontaneously.
Always observe good workshop practices. Wear goggles when you operate machine tools or work with battery acid. Gloves or other protective clothing should be worn whenever the job requires working with harmful substances.
Greases, lubricants and other automotive chemicals contain toxic substances, many of which are absorbed directly through the skin. Read the manufacturer's instructions and warnings carefully. Use hand and eye protection. Avoid direct skin contact
Disconnect the battery negative terminal (ground strap) whenever you work on the fuel system or the electrical system. Do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards. Keep an approved fire extinguisher handy.
Friction materials (such as brake pads or shoes or clutch discs) contain asbestos fibers or other friction materials. Do not create dust by grinding, sanding, or by cleaning with compressed air. Avoid breathing dust. Breathing any friction material dust can lead to serious diseases and may result in death.
Batteries give off explosive hydrogen gas during charging. Keep sparks, lighted matches and open flame away from the top of the battery. If hydrogen gas escaping from the cap vents is ignited, it will ignite gas trapped in the cells and cause the battery to explode.
Connect and disconnect battery cables, jumper cables or a battery charger only with the ignition switched off. Do not disconnect the battery while the engine is running.
Do not quick-charge the battery (for boost starting) for longer than one minute. Wait at least one minute before boosting the battery a second time.
Do not allow battery charging voltage to exceed 16.5 volts. If the battery begins producing gas or boiling violently, reduce the charging rate. Boosting a sulfated battery at a high charging rate can cause an explosion.
The air conditioning system is filled with chemical refrigerant, which is hazardous. The A/C system should be serviced only by trained technicians using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment, trained in related safety precautions, and familiar with regulations governing the discharging and disposal of automotive chemical refrigerants.
Do not expose any part of the A/C system to high temperatures such as open flame. Excessive heat will increase system pressure and may cause the system to burst.
Some aerosol tire inflators are highly flammable. Be extremely cautious when repairing a tire that may have been inflated using an aerosol tire inflator. Keep sparks, open flame or other sources of ignition away from the tire repair area. Inflate and deflate the tire at least four times before breaking the bead from the rim. Completely remove the tire from the rim before attempting any repair.
Cars covered by this manual are equipped with a supplemental restraint system (SRS), that automatically deploys airbags and pyrotechnic seat belt tensioners in the event of a frontal or side impact. These are explosive devices. Handled improperly or without adequate safeguards, they can be accidently activated and cause serious injury.
The ignition system produces high voltages that can be fatal. Avoid contact with exposed terminals and use extreme care when working on a car with the engine running or the ignition switched on.
Place jack stands only at locations specified by manufacturer. The vehicle lifting jack supplied with the vehicle is intended for tire changes only. A heavy duty floor jack should be used to lift vehicle before installing jack stands. See 010 General.
Battery acid (electrolyte) can cause severe burns. Flush contact area with water, seek medical attention.
Aerosol cleaners and solvents may contain hazardous or deadly vapors and are highly flammable. Use only in a well ventilated area. Do not use on hot surfaces (engines, brakes, etc.).
Do not remove coolant reservoir or radiator cap with the engine hot. Danger of burns and engine damage.

CAUTIONS-

If you lack the skills, tools and equipment, or a suitable workshop for any procedure described in this manual, we suggest you leave such repairs to an authorized dealer or other qualified shop.
Before starting a job, make certain that you have all the necessary tools and parts on hand. Read all the instructions thoroughly, and do not attempt shortcuts. Use tools appropriate to the work and use only replacement parts meeting original specifications. Makeshift tools, parts and procedures will not make good repairs.
Use pneumatic and electric tools only to loosen threaded parts and fasteners. Never use these tools to tighten fasteners, especially on light alloy parts. Always use a torque wrench to tighten fasteners to the tightening torque specification listed.
Be mindful of the environment and ecology. Before you drain the crankcase, find out the proper way to dispose of the oil. Do not pour oil onto the ground, down a drain, or into a stream, pond or lake. Dispose of in accordance with Federal, State and Local laws.
The control module for the anti-lock brake system (ABS) cannot withstand temperatures from a paint-drying booth or a heat lamp in excess of 203°F (95°C) and should not be subjected to temperatures in excess of 185°F (85°C) for more than two hours.
Before doing any electrical welding on cars equipped with ABS, disconnect the battery negative terminal (ground strap) and the ABS control module connector.
Always make sure ignition is off before disconnecting battery.
Label battery cables before disconnecting. On some models, battery cables are not color coded.
Disconnecting the battery may erase fault code(s) stored in control module memory. Check for fault codes prior to disconnecting the battery cables. - If a normal or rapid charger is used to charge battery, the battery must be disconnected and removed from the vehicle in order to avoid damaging paint and upholstery.
Do not quick-charge the battery (for boost starting) for longer than one minute. Wait at least one minute before boosting the battery a second time.
Connect and disconnect a battery charger only with the battery charger switched off.
Sealed or "maintenance free" batteries should be slow-charged only, at an amperage rate that is approximately 10% of the battery's ampere-hour (Ah) rating.
Do not allow battery charging voltage to exceed 16.5 volts. If the battery begins producing gas or boiling violently, reduce the charging rate. Boosting a sulfated battery at a high charging rate can cause an explosion.

A new promotional video has been released by BMW, where the new 3-Series is being tested at the hottest place on Earth – Death Valley, California.

The car’s exterior is completely covered and there are some details, which can be seen inside the car.
2012 BMW 3-Series will be a little bigger than the current model. It will offer a wide variety of engines including a new turbocharged 1.6 liter petrol with 150PS (110 kW), a new turbocharged 2.0 liter petrol with 245PS (180 kW) and a turbocharged 3.0 liter petrol with 306PS (225 kW).

A hybrid version will also be available, which will have a petrol power plant paired to a 54PS (40 kW) electric motor.

2012 BMW 3-Series is scheduled to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Its magnesium/aluminum construction and Valvetronic variable valve lift are features found only on BMW engines. The N52 achieves impressive progress on all performance and technology fronts, specifically in its remarkably lightweight of 357 lbs. An aluminum/magnesium engine block, hollow camshafts, plastic camshaft cover, improved combustion chambers, one more evolved Double VANOS[1], higher fuel injection pressure, sophisticated engine electronics, an electric coolant pump, a variable-volume oil pump plus an oil/coolant heat exchanger will be the other weight-saving features and improvements from the engine over previous generations.

A super Cooper: We never tire of tires

Cooper Tires used Ford Mustangs to demonstrate the capabilities of its new Zeon line of tires.

Cooper Tires is the fourth-largest tire manufacturer in North America, with just more than 13 percent of the replacement-tire market in the United States. But nobody goes around chanting, "We're No. 4!" So Cooper is working on a bigger market share. A few new tires we recently tried out could help it get there.

Now granted, making sense of the black art of tire design takes a couple degrees in polymer physics, and even then your driving talent or lack thereof probably has more to do with the differences you think you're feeling down on the contact patch. But what the heck, it was a chance for track time, and you always learn something from that.

We went to the Cooper Tire & Vehicle Test Center in Pearsall, Texas, just outside of San Antonio, to drive four new tire models.

First up was the Cooper Zeon RS3-A All Season tire. To show off this one, Cooper outfitted two identical Ford Mustangs, one with the Zeon RS3-A and one with what Cooper considers to be the current segment leader, the Hankook Ventus V4 ES.

With the traction control disabled on both vehicles, we drove them back-to-back over a wet skid pad and a dry handling course. Both test tracks had a measured and coned course and included a timer so you could compare lap times.

Although the times were close in both wet and dry conditions, we found the Cooper Zeon RS3-A tires handled well under both conditions but were especially good in the wet.

Among the assembled media--and what better drivers are there than those guys?--the Cooper Zeon RS3-A shaved off an average of 1.5 seconds per lap in the dry and 2.8 seconds per lap in the wet, when compared with the Hankooks.

We repeated the same tests later in the day using Cooper's new Ultra High Performance tire, the Zeon RS3-S. We drove them on identically equipped BMW 3-series sedans and found the Coopers outperformed the Michelin Pilot Sport PS 2s by an average of two seconds per lap in the wet and 2.1 seconds in the dry.

The Zeon RS3-S is a summer product designed for dry traction, wet handling and styling. It replaces the RS2-S in the market. The RS3-S will be available in 21 sizes and both W and Y speed ratings.

The all-season Cooper Zeon RS3-A is designed for wet, dry and light snow, according to Cooper. The RS3-A will be available in 38 sizes and is W speed rated.

Both tires incorporate an asymmetrical design that allows them to be fully rotated. Cooper claims the design leads to an even tread life and an even wear pattern over the life of the tire. Both tires incorporate a silica-based tread compound allowing for tighter steering response and lighter weight.

Cooper also provided track time for its light-truck tires.

But that wasn't enough tire for us. So the next day we were back at the track to try the new Cooper Discoverer A/T3 and Discoverer S/T Maxx light truck tires. The A/T 3, which we had a chance to drive over several on-road/off-road courses at the same test facility, replaces the Cooper ATR and comes with a 55,000-mile warranty. It also goes on-sale April 4 of this year.

The Discoverer S/T Maxx, which was not available to drive, is designed for commercial applications and uses ArmorTek3 technology, which, according to Cooper, delivers a durable, versatile, cut and chip resistant tire, which is also quiet on the road without sacrificing off-road traction. The Discoverer S/T Maxx is available now.

Cooper provided no prices for any of these tires, saying pricing is left to dealers. That was something different. Imagine that, they have no idea what their product sells for!

Focused strictly on the replacement tire business, Cooper sold 30 million car and light truck tires in the United States in 2010. The company manufactures 78 percent of its U.S. tires in three U.S. plants located in Findley, Ohio; Texarkana, Texas; and Tupelo, Miss. The remaining 22 percent come from a plant in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Tires probably don't get enough scrutiny in the automotive press. There are significant differences between them all, just as there is with gasoline, motor oil and windshield wiper fluids. Maybe we'll start writing more about them. So now we're off to test out the other 4 million tire styles, shapes, sizes and makers and get back to you with the complete context for these Coopers. Until then, put the three Coopers we did drive on the list.

Police seek more M90 crash witnesses

TRAFFIC police investigating a fatal crash on the M90 at Craigend have appealed for the driver of a BMW car to come forward.

Newburgh resident Ricky Brown (18) died in hospital after the car he was a passenger in repeatedly turned over at junction 10 shortly after midnight last Thursday/Friday.

The driver of the vehicle, a Ford Focus, sustained only minor injuries and was released from Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital after treatment.

Officers from the Road Policing Unit based at Perth have been carrying out further enquiries including examining CCTV footage.

Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen the distinctive grey Ford Focus ST170 car or a light silver/metallic blue Citroen Saxo on either Shore Road, Friarton Road, Edinburgh Road or the M90 at

Craigend between 11.50pm on March 17 and 00.10am last Friday.

The unit’s Sgt Alan Pettigrew declared: “It is imperative that we trace every potential witness to this tragic incident.

“We know that the grey Ford Focus followed this route and that a silver blue Citroen Saxo was also in the area.

“Whilst we have traced the driver of the Saxo, I would appeal for the driver of a black-coloured BMW 3 series coupe which we know travelled northwards in Friarton road about that time to contact us as a matter of urgency.

“The driver or occupants of this vehicle may have vital information.”

Anyone with information should call police on 0300 111 2222.

Giordano wins new BMW in NAPA contest

His heart was racing and he felt faint — but not because he was driving a brand new BMW around a performance track in South Carolina. Rather it was the fact that he had just won one of those new BMWs that caused John Giordano of Pontiac to feel a quickening of emotion.

Giordano, owner of the NAPA Auto Parts Store in Pontiac, won the car earlier this month as part of a promotional competition sponsored by NAPA Filters.

The Pontiac store participated in a national elite performer “MOTORvation” contest sponsored by NAPA Filters for NAPA stores in the United States.

According to Paul Kortman, category marketing manager for NAPA Filters based in Gastonia, N.C., NAPA store owners qualified to enter the contest by making a certain level of new sales during a five-month period in late 2010. Random drawings from all the store entries were held across the country, and 15 winners were selected to attend a recent weekend trip to the BMW Performance Racing School in Spartanburg, S.C., which is also the home of BMW’s North American manufacturing center.

“After two full days of driving every BMW model made on their performance course, the 15 winners each drew a number, assigned to one of 15 BMWs, from a fish bowl. Only one of those 15 BMWs was keyed to start and Giordano was the lucky winner,” said Kortman, who traveled to Pontiac Thursday along with other

NAPA officials to congratulate Giordano and check out his new ride, which he picked up Wednesday evening from Bloomington BMW.

“I didn’t keep the car that started. I got to go to Bloomington and picked out the car (same model as winning car) that I wanted,” Giordano said.

“He was calling me every day from his weekend trip telling me about the racing and how much fun he was having,” said his wife, Lisa. “When he called and told me his heart was racing, I asked ‘how fast were you going today?’ He replied, ‘no, not from driving, I won the car.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

The Giordanos two sons, Joey, 10, and Paul, 8, were also at the official presentation at the NAPA store Thursday. Joey nodded enthusiastically when asked if he liked his dad’s new car. The older boy was already wearing a BMW cap and got behind the wheel of the parked car for pictures.

“I was really just looking forward to the weekend trip,” Giordano said. “That really would have been enough. It was great. Winning the car was unbelievable.”

“I was grinning ear-to-ear all weekend driving all those BMWs,” Giordano added. “When we all pushed the start button at the same time, I was stunned to hear my car’s engine start. I’m thrilled to have won and really want to thank my employees, customers and NAPA Filters for helping make this possible.”

“John’s store is recognized as a major player in the auto parts market in this region,” says NAPA Filters District Sales Manager Pat Traynor. “They have a reputation for going out of their way to serve customers and get them what they need, when they need it. They’re a great partner and have been a strong NAPA store for than 30 years.”

Giordano’s father, Paul, opened Pontiac NAPA Auto Supply and recently transitioned the business to his son. However, the company founder still comes in and works a few hours every morning, John Giordano said. The company has 20 employees and two additional stores in El Paso and Dwight.

“My father was always in the parts business and I’ve followed the same path,” Giordano added. “I worked here through high school and college and enjoy the people and relationships we’ve built. It’s a competitive business, but we’ve been successful because of our service orientation and the expertise we offer people.”

Giordano graduated from Illinois State University, Normal, with a degree in marketing.

Nissan aims Murano convertible at luxury buyers

Nissan's Murano CrossCabriolet goes on sale next month. The automaker hopes it will take buyers from the Lexus RX, BMW 3 series and Audi A4.

NASHVILLE--Nissan's admittedly unusual new convertible--the drop-top Murano CrossCabriolet--has an equally unusual aspiration.

Nissan Division anticipates the vehicle will draw buyers not from the brand's normal mass-market competitors, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai, but from the luxury world of BMW, Audi, and Volvo.

The convertible crossover, which will retail for $47,300 with shipping when it goes on sale next month, hopes to woo buyers of the Lexus RX crossover, BMW 3 series, and Audi A4. Nissan's strategy is that the CrossCabriolet is already in the price range of the higher-end products and offers luxury buyers a convertible alternative that doesn't exist elsewhere.

Those are normally the hunting grounds of Nissan's luxury sister brand, Infiniti. But there is little that's normal about the new Nissan model.

Nissan Motor designers altered the Murano's four-door body into a two-door body to give it adequate rigidity to sport a convertible top. The result is a stylishly large four-passenger convertible with standard leather seats.

Unlike a low-to-the-ground convertible roadster, the Murano is 66.2 inches tall with its top up. With 20-inch wheels, it has a step-in height of nearly 16 inches.

"We continue to challenge what people think about what they drive and why they drive what they do," says Mike Drongowski, Nissan senior manager of product planning. "It might not be a typical choice for a product, but it's consistent with who we are as a brand and our history of innovation."

First Spy Photos: BMW 3 Series GT

A BMW 3 Series GT has been rumored for quite some time now and several reports have been published by us in the past, but today, first spy photos of the 3 Series GT surfaced on the interwebs. As expected, the 3 Series Gran Turismo features some design cues as seen on the bigger 5GT, a hatch (simplified this time) and a raised ride height. The 3 Series GT will offer similar attributes and design ideas as the bigger GT, but with a more attractive and sleeker lines.

The car has a high belt line that completely wraps around the car, therefore allowing the roof to be lower and sleeker.

The core idea of a Gran Turismo vehicle remains, traveling in style and luxury, but without sacrificing performance. Even though not officially confirmed, we expect the 3 GT to be also a vehicle built from inside out, same as the first Gran Turismo penned by Christopher Weil.

Our sources says the 3 Series GT will offer a simple hatch function forgoing the twin trunk arrangement on the 5er GT. BMW intends to offer both turbocharged petrol and diesel four cylinder engines. For the high-end 3 Series GT, a choice of six cylinders and a hybrid drivetrain will be available. BMW’s all-wheel-drive platform, xDrive, will be optional as well.

We learned that internally the 3GT is referred as the “Progressive Activity Coupe.”
The 3er GT build on the success of the 5 Series GT which has sold over 20,000 units since its introduction at the end of 2009. In the US, the 5er GT has already eclipsed over two-years combined sales of the 5 Series Touring.

With first test mules hitting the ground in late March, we anticipate that BMW will unveil the 3 Series GT in a concept form at the home show in Frankfurt.

After winning a brand new 3 series BMW in a newspaper competition last month, NZICA at 10am today offered it for auction on Trade Me with a reserve of $1 to raise funds for the Christchurch recovery effort.

NZICA Chief Executive Terry McLaughlin said that proceeds from the sale of the 320d BMW will be donated to the NZICA EQ Appeal, which is being launched today to collect funds for the Christchurch recovery effort. He hopes bids for the car, which is direct from the manufacturer and has zero kilometres on the clock, will far exceed the current bids and reach at least $50,000.

“We were lucky enough to win the BMW through a subscriber competition last month. The events in Christchurch quickly made it apparent what we should do with it,” Mr McLaughlin said.

“We’re hoping that people who are in the market for a new car will take the opportunity to get a luxury one at a good price and make sure the proceeds from the sale go to a worthwhile cause.

“We saw that a rock from the Christchurch earthquake can raise $60,000 or more on Trade Me, so I’m hopeful that the BMW will attract some good bids. I know what I’d rather have in the driveway.”

NZICA won the vehicle through a National Business Review subscriber competition on 25 February. The BMW has never been driven. Its recommended retail price (RRP) is $89,000.

Proceeds from the BMW auction, minus GST, will be donated to the NZICA EQ Appeal, which is being launched today at http://appeal.nzica.com. The NZICA EQ Appeal will support the ongoing recovery effort and help Christchurch begin to rebuild.

NZICA has over 32,000 members, of which more than 3,000 are based in Christchurch. Approximately 75 of these have businesses located in the Christchurch CBD.

“Many of our members have been significantly affected by the earthquake. The loss of life and damage to buildings and businesses has shocked and saddened us, but we have been awed by the spirit and resilience our Christchurch members and the city’s residents have shown in the face of the event,” said Mr McLaughlin.

“Like everybody else, we have been looking for opportunities to help. One of the best ways we can do this is by drawing on the generosity of our member network, and the public, to create a designated channel for them to make donations to the Christchurch recovery. The NZICA EQ Appeal will allow them to track and promote their contributions.

“I hope everyone will be able to give generously to support this worthwhile appeal.”

All donations to the NZICA EQ Appeal will be passed on to the New Zealand Government Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. NZICA is covering all fees associated with collecting and passing on the donations.

Trade Me is supporting the NZICA EQ Appeal by waiving all auction fees for the sale of the BMW. Trade Me spokesman Paul Ford congratulated NZICA on its decision to auction the BMW and donate the proceeds to its appeal.

“Good on the team at NZICA for getting behind the earthquake relief effort in a very big and very generous way. We hope Trade Me members agree that this is a fantastic auction and get in behind it with some generous bids,” Mr Ford said.

The BMW comes with a two-year manufacturer’s warranty and a three-year BMW service plan. Mark Gilbert, Managing Director of the BMW Group, said he was pleased that the vehicle would be used for a good cause.

“We’re pleased to support the NZICA EQ Appeal. It’s great that this BMW will be used to help raise funds for Christchurch,” said Mr Gilbert.

NBR BMW on Trade Me with $1 reserve

On February 25, NBR revealed the result of its latest subscriber draw.

The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants was the lucky winner of the BMW 3 series 320d edition.

The institute decided to take its good luck, and pay it forward.

This morning, at 10am, the BMW was placed on Trade Me, with a $1 reserve.

All proceeds from the auction (minus GST) will go to Christchurch earthquake relief efforts, NZICA Chief Executive Terry McLaughlin said.

Just 90 minutes after the auction began, bidding had already passed $45,000, with bids increasing at $1000 a minute (follow the auction here.)

BMW has come to the party, too, offering the auction winner - technically, a second-hand buyer - the same two-year manufacturer's warranty and a three-year BMW service plan that a new buyer would receive.

Audi and BMW have once again featured strongly in the most popular monthly top 10 searches on ContractHireAndLeasing.com for February 2011.

The BMW 3-Series was the most searched for model with the 5-Series and 1-Series models also hitting the top 10 (at number 9 and 10 respectively), while fellow German marque Audi secured three spots with its A3, A5 and A4 models (numbers 2, 3 and 6).

Infiniti G Series was upgraded

The BMW 5-series GT has been a sales success for the German automaker, even though the AutoWeek staff is sharply divided over its looks.

There's a redesigned 3-series coming for 2012, and a GT version is joining in the lineup. These spy photos give an early look at the 3-series GT ahead of its expected debut this September at the Frankfurt motor show.

The arrival of the 3-series GT will give BMW healthy coverage of the small-crossover segment, with new versions of the X1 and the X3 recently launched.

Much like the 5-series GT, the 3-series variant will have a higher seating position, more ground clearance and the two-tier hatch design.

The powertrain lineup will include several four- and six-cylinder engines, some of them turbocharged. Look for rear-drive and all-wheel-drive setups.

Driver flees after head-on early morning smash

A MAN was on the run from police and three people were in a serious condition in hospital after a head-on collision involving a stolen car in Gungahlin yesterday.

The crash occurred about 5am, when a stolen silver BMW 3-Series sedan travelling north on Horse Park Drive collided with a southbound black Holden Viva sedan.

Firefighters were forced to cut a male suffering chest and leg injuries from the wreckage of the Holden.
Two female passengers sustained suspected abdominal injuries in the accident and were stabilised at the scene by intensive care paramedics.

All three were taken to the Canberra Hospital in a serious condition.
The driver of the BMW is believed to have fled the scene on foot before emergency services arrived.
The BMW was later reported as stolen.

Police closed the road for around five hours while the ACT Policing's Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team investigated the incident.

BMW Team RLL successfully made it through the first half of the 12-hour race in Sebring: Both its BMW M3 GT cars ran within the top-3 of the GT category at the season opener of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) after six hours.

Andy Priaulx was at the wheel of the second-placed no. 56 BMW M3 GT, when halftime was reached at the “Sebring International Raceway”. The second BMW M3 GT, driven by Dirk Werner, followed closely behind in third.

The opening phase of the race did not run as planned for car number 56. Over the course of the first stint, Dirk Müller was involved in two incidents, which saw him dropping back to the back of the field. However, Müller clawed his way back, which was continued by Joey Hand from lap 45. Following a pit stop on lap 80, the American took over the lead for the first time, after his team-mates in the no. 55 BMW M3 GT had already led the race earlier in the race. On lap 95, Hand handed over the car to triple world touring car champion Priaulx, who was running in second after six hours. The gap to the leading Ferrari was just fractions of a second.

In the no. 55 car, first-stint driver Werner managed to consolidate third place over the first laps. The BMW Team RLL pit crew proved its quality during a pit stop under yellow, giving Bill Auberlen the necessary advantage to rejoin the race as leader. While he had to give up the lead a little later again, he regained first place on lap 58. On lap 80, Augusto Farfus was on duty for the first time in his maiden race on US soil and also led after another full-course yellow. Following another driver changeover to Werner, the no. 55 car holds third in the GT category.

Bobby Rahal (Team Principal): “The race is unfolding quite positively for us. However, it’s still a very long way to go. The longer the race goes, the more difficult it will get. But the pace of our BMW M3 GT cars is good. If we don’t suffer any problems, we should be very competitive until the end.”

Augusto Farfus (Car number 55): “It’s a great feeling to lead this race. However, it’s just halftime and a long way down the road. The lead is changing nearly at every pit stop, so you just cannot make any predictions for the outcome of this race. Our car is great, and I really enjoy racing here. With every extra hour, the reliability becomes more important. But I’m very positive that we are very strong in this respect, too.”

Joey Hand (Car number 56): “I have never felt so good in a GT car than during this race. The balance of the BMW M3 GT is just fantastic. The guys from BMW Motorsport and BMW Team RLL did a great job. Our Dunlop tyres work very well, too, so we can push all the time. The traffic is unbelievable, it’s very, very tough out there. You have to be careful and keep away from any trouble. I worked my way back up from outside the top-ten to the very top. This was good fun.”
