Even though the Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper was repressed for fifty years, it was rediscovered along with the feminist movement. This story is an autobiography due to the fact it is based on the writer’s real life experience. Gilman portrays the process of the downfall of women who are suffering from mental illness in a very dramatic sense, and how men and women in the late nineteenth century are treated differently. The story shows how women struggled against the power of men.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman gets married to Charles Walter Stetson in 1884 and gives birth to a daughter. After having a baby, she suffers from postnatal depression and doctor gives her a prescription “put her life into house work, reduces the time in work outside of the house less than two hours and never grasps a pen or a pencil.” It makes her condition worse. The Yellow-Wallpaper is published in 1892. She realizes that writing is much more helpful to her mental health and to fulfill herself.

In the 19th century, the feminist movement begins as a radical, fringe ideology, largely dismissed by the main stream. Before the feminist movement, the rights of women were not guaranteed and women were controlled by their husbands, or fathers. While men, as superiors, freely go to work in the outside world, women, as subordinates, “absolutely forbidden to work,” just stay inside the house under the superiors’ (husbands) supervisions. Even women could not vote or own property, furthermore women were to be pure, pious, domestic and submissive. As a result, women were discouraged from writing and expressing themselves, because men were afraid that writing and expressing themselves and writing would make women more independent. In The Yellow Wallpaper, the lack of rights for women is shown; narrator does not even have a choice to choose her own room because “John would not hear of it.”

There are three significant characters in this novel, narrator, the narrator’s husband (John) and the narrator’s sister-in-law (Jennie). The narrator represents the general women living in this age. On the other hand, she differs from stream of times by protesting against her husband and her subordinate role. John, the narrator’s husband, is a traditional man of the late nineteenth century. John is treated respectfully. John shows his dominance over the author and he is portrayed as “John is a physician,” and not just a physician but a “physician of high standing.” The man in her life has prestigious, active job and brings home the income to support his family while the narrator is a general woman in that time, domesticated and submissive unable to work. Jennie, John’s sister, she is perfect and enthusiastic housekeeper, and hopes for no better profession. John’s sister Jennie embodies the ideal woman of this age. The narrator might envy her or want to be like her because the narrator lacks Jennie's custodial traits and the narrator’s inability to complete household tasks is a symptom of her nervous disorder.

This story is about the self-awareness of a woman, and it has an omniscient narrator. This story begins with a woman suffering some mental illness in a mental hospital surrounded by somber yellow paper. The husband, John, is a very proud doctor. He doesn’t tend to agree with his wife’s treatment for her disorder by doing job, instead her puts her in some house. She is unchanged by his treatment, and she is trapped in a fairly antique house to “cure” her mental disorder by his requirement. This dark and gloomy space has an atmosphere like something might happen. The windows have bars installed, that look like a jail. The husband believes that she is getting better from an early symptom, but she doesn’t agree with his opinion. In addition she is getting worse by an obsession with the yellow wall paper. She writes in a journal to check her symptoms, avoiding her husband and his sister. This journaling is only available at the time they are not in the house. So usually she writes in the night and takes naps instead of sleeps. This life pattern makes her husband feel like uncomfortable. However, he still believes that she is going to completely recover and does not listen to her words. Finally she goes insane. She makes a decision that there is a presence behind the yellow wall paper, at night, and then it goes around the house in the daytime. She is completely crazy and crawls on the wall, scratches and rubs her body and tries to help the presence behind the yellow wall paper to get out. The husband blacked out and the story is over.

The yellow wallpaper functions as a metaphor for the narrator’s mind and inspires her to find her true self. As we discover, the narrator describes the yellow wall paper like “repellent, almost revolting; a smouldering unclean yellow, not bright yellow.” This shows the bad situation her mind is currently in. Moreover, pattern of the wallpaper in The Yellow Wallpaper symbolizes conflicts between paternalism and feminism. The conflicts in the story cannot be avoided like the “yellow smell” which the narrator hates but cannot avoid. Also, Gilman looked at objects out of standard context. Her writing tends not to perceive meaning or explain the definition of the object, such as the wallpaper, but to create a special perception. However, there cannot be a real victory in the end of this novel because the author would be regarded as an insane woman and separated from society afterward. However, it is also not a victory for paternalism because the narrator’s behavior has changed John’s attitude: “John who never was nervous in his life cried” Both sides changed throughout the event, but there is no winner at the end. Even though no one gained victory in the story, it is a victory for every woman who is fighting against unfairness in their own way. The entrance into, she might not be driven insane if her husband would give her the right treatment, she might be getting well. Who makes her go insane? Someone behind the yellow wall paper? Or the husband? Or just her schizophrenic tendencies?

National Police Agency Commissioner Cho Hyun-oh (Park Hae-mook/The Korea Herald)

National Police Agency Commissioner Cho Hyun-oh has offered to resign, taking responsibility for the lax police response in a rape and murder case.

On April 2, a 28-year-old woman was murdered more than six hours after she reported to the police at 10:50 p.m. on the previous day that she was being sexually assaulted.

“I ask for the forgiveness of the family and express my deepest condolences. I will take all responsibility for this and step down,” Cho said on Monday.

“I reproach myself and offer heartfelt apology in the knowledge that the police’s carelessness brought such terrible results, and for disappointing the public with lies.”

He added that he would overhaul related systems such as the 112 police emergency call system before his resignation is processed, saying that he alone could take responsibility for the developments.

Meanwhile, a Cheong Wa Dae spokesman has said that Cho’s resignation would be accepted as the police were clearly at fault in this case.

“Commissioner Cho’s resignation will be processed as it is clear that the police responded poorly. However, it has not been decided whether it will be processed immediately or after the situation has been handled,” Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Park Jeong-ha said.

The victim, a 28-year-old woman surnamed called the police and reported that she was being raped in Suwon. The police station responsible for the area, Suwon Jungbu Police Station, dispatched a team of detectives to the area but failed to locate the victim. In addition, the officer receiving the call is heard saying on the police tape that the call appears to be a domestic disturbance.

The victim’s remains were found more than 13 hours after the victim called the police at about 10:50 p.m. The victim’s body had been dismembered and placed into 14 black plastic bags by the suspect.

Later investigations, however, revealed that she was alive for about six hours after she first called the police.

While on the phone with the police, the victim was discovered and beaten by her killer. Her phone was dropped, without the call being disconnected, allowing the police to hear what was happening for more than six minutes. The victim was then tied up, and killed after 5 a.m. on April 2 when she resisted his attempts to sexually assault her.

The victim had specified that she was inside a house near a playground in the vicinity of Jidong Elementary School, but officers dispatched to the scene are reported to have searched the playground and outside nearby houses.

According to the victim’s family, the police officers dispatched to the scene were also irresponsible.

According to the family, two police officers waiting in a police vehicle with the victim’s older sister were sleeping while the search was under way saying only that “others were looking diligently.”

In addition, the victim’s family has also testified that police officers had gotten within 10 meters of the house she was found in.

In addition, officers at Suwon Jungbu Police Station later asked the sister to go to a fire station to bring back information regarding the location of the victim’s mobile phone.

In the early hours of April 2, the victim’s family kept trying to get in touch with her but failed. Her phone was picked up at 8:02 a.m. on April 2, but immediately disconnected.

“I was told (by the victim’s sister) that the police said ‘if you don’t want to get your sister killed, get the location (of the mobile phone) from the fire station,’ and the search went underway in earnest after she relayed the information to the police,” the victim’s uncle said.

General Speaking Strategies : Independent and Integrated

Strategy 1 : Be prepared to speak from notes, not a transcript

You won't have enough time on the actual exam to write out a transcript of your answer. Even for the independent tasks, you will only be able to record your ideas in note form
Don't practice by writing out whole sentences and then speaking them out loud.
In order to be properly prepared for the exam, you should practice by writing single words or phrases and then using those ideas in complete sentences.

Strategy 2 : Organize your thoughts and speech as a paragraph, not a standard essay

Your answers in the speaking section are not spoken essay, but they must still be organized. You need to make your point quickly, so don't bother with an extended hook like those used in lectures and essays.
Your first sentence should be your thesis statement or topic sentence, and it should give your main idea and possibly a clue to your supporting points. The next sentences should explain your main idea with details, but don't think of it as separate paragraphs. Likewise, your conclusion can't be a separate paragraph. Your conclusion should be one or two sentences at most.

Strategy 3 : Use familiar vocabulary

Be yourself and be conversational. Use the vocabulary that you would normally use in a serious but friendly conversation about an academic topic.

Strategy 4 : Use short, simple sentences

Comfortable, natural speech in English doesn't sound like written English. Don't try to speak in formal, written style with long, complex sentences of three or more clauses.

Strategy 5 : Vary your vocabulary and sentence structure

Speaking naturally does not mean speaking repetitively. Use different word forms when you discuss the same idea or related ideas.

Strategy 6 : Use cohesive devices effectively

Cohesion means unity, and it refers to the number of connections among the ideas in a sentence and paragraph. The speaker guides listener with transition devices : first, second, for example, so, also.

Strategy 7 : Use transitions appropriately

Throughout your speech, use transitions to indicate sequence (first, next, etc), connection/similarity (moreover, furthermore, etc.), contrast (however, but, etc), examples (for example, for instance, like etc), or explanation(therefore, because, due to, etc.).

Strategy 8 : Be concise

A concise answer gives a lot of information in a short amount of time. In other words, it is brief but informative. Many students make the mistake of speaking faster in order to say more. A natural, comfortable speed is best.

Strategy 9 : Use idioms in moderation, but not slang.

Using idiom appropriately show good language skill, which can raise your mark.

Strategy 10 : Pay attention to your pronunciation.

Pronunciation is a vital part of any spoken language, and it is often the most difficult skill to improve. Pronouncing words without reduction slows your speech and makes it difficult to speak with a natural pace and rhythm.

Strategy 11 : Speak at an even pace and with a regular rhythm.

Good English is spoken at the same overall pace, or speed, throughout. Rhythm involves the proper stress of words and proper pauses between phrases and clauses.

Strategy 12 : Group words and pause appropriately

Most students already know that they must pause for breath at a comma or a period, but his advice is difficult to follow without a transcript. You should understand that English words are spoken in groups, not individually.

You should group your words into phrases and clauses, and pause between them :

The woman wants to be a dancer [pause] and she to work after school [pause] to pay for her tutorials. [pause] Although she's on a scholarship, [pause] it doesn't pay for everything. [pause] Dancing is very demanding [pause], which is why she needs a tutor. [pause] Unfortunately,...

Strategy 13 : Link and glide smoothly between pauses

Linking and gliding are two main ways of grouping English words smoothly. Try the following examples (stress marked ') :

He 'needs a 'book on the 'Civil War. = He 'needs-a 'book-on-the 'Civil 'War. (no pauses between needs and a and between book and the)

The 'woman is a 'dancer. = The 'woman-is-a 'dancer. (no pauses between woman and dancer)

If you end a word with a round, circular shape to your mouth, then the w glide is easier, but if you end a word with your mouth stretched to the sides, like a smile, then the y is easier. Look at the following:

'Information is e'ssential to in'vestors. = 'Information-is-e'ssential to-w-in'vestors.

'Time should be im'portant as 'well = 'Time should be-y-im'portant-as 'well.

With practice, they should feel natural and shouldn't be forced or exaggerated.

Cheol-Min (So Ji-Sub), a man with a dark, mysterious past, picks up a part-time night job as a parking lot attendant. He sits in the tiny pay booth in the parking lot and stares at the small television. A woman named Jung-Hwa (Han Hyo-Joo) walks into the booth. She offers something to Cheol-Min and sits next to him. Cheol-Min realizes the woman is blind and she is confusing him for the parking attendant who worked their previously.

Nevertheless, the woman comes back on another night to watch the same television drama series. She constantly asks Cheol-Min questions on what is happening on the television screen. Cheol-Min starts becoming attached to the woman. Their past is tied by a life altering incident.

One day, Cheol-Min accompanies Jung-Hwa to a musical. Afterwards they have dinner together. Jung-Hwa asks about Cheol-Min's past. Cheol-Min ruthlessly berates Jung-Hwa for asking about his past. Their relationship becomes frozen.

Several days later when Jung-Hwa's boss follows her home and tries to sexually assault her Cheol-Min busts through the door. He beats Jung-Hwa's boss savagely and attempts to comfort Jung-Hwa. They move in together and start to live as a couple. But can their happiness last?

Kang In-Ho (Gong Yoo) is a newly appointed teacher at a school for the hearing-impaired in Mujin city. On the way to his new job he becomes involved in a minor car accident and takes his car to a local car repair shop. There his already wrecked car is bumped by a woman named Yoo-Jin (Jung Yu-Mi). Yoo-Jin is an employee at the Mujin Human Rights Center.

On the first day at his new school, In-Ho meets the school's principal and director of administration. They are an identical twins. The director of administration asks for a bribe of 50 million WON ($50,000 USD) to work at their school. In-Ho's financial situation is already in dire circumstances. His daughter who is staying with his mother suffers from asthma. In-Ho's wife has passed away. In-Ho makes a phone call to his mother asking for the money. She delivers the 50 million WON by taking out the deposit money for their home.

While teaching the hearing-impaired students, In-Ho feels something strange about the kid's distant appearances. On his way home, In-Ho notices one of his students Yoo-Ri sitting on the ledge of her dorm room window, which is several stories above ground. He rushes into the dorm building and makes it into Yoo-Ri's room to pull her away from the window. Yoo-Ri then leads In-Ho to a door down the hall and stops. In-Ho goes into the room and sees the superintendent of the dormitory beating a male student named Yeon-Doo. In-Ho is shocked by the brutality and eventually takes Yeon-Doo to the hospital. In-Ho also makes a phone call to Yoo-Jin, the lady from the huma rights center who bumped into him earlier, and asks her to come to the hospital. Soon, In-Ho and Yoo-Jin uncover unfathomable actions committed by the school's faculty against the students. Their work to break the children's silence is only beginning. Meanwhile, In-Ho feels his own pressures to stay silent as his new job already cost his family their home's deposit money and medical bills are piling up for his daughter.

Set during the second Manchu invasion of Korea, Nam-Yi (Park Hae-Il), the best archer in Korea, goes up against the Qing Dynasty to save his younger sister Ja-In (Moon Chae-Won) - who was dragged away by Mongolian invaders.

Nam-Yi's father was killed as a traitor to his country. Kim Moo-Sun, a friend of Nam-Yi's father, takes Nam-Yi and Ja-In and raises them as they were his own children. During the wedding, Nam-Yi is up in the mountains hunting deer. He hears the rumble of the invading forces. When Nam-Yi makes it back to the village, he finds his step-father slaughtered and his siter taken away. Nam-Yi then sets out to find the Qing army and take out their army with his bow. The great commander of the Qing army Jyuu Shin-Ta (Ryoo Seung-Ryong) discovers the mysterious man trailing his men and taking them out one by one. Jyuu Shin-Ta then sets out to find Nam-Yi. A war of arrows is set to begin...

Tae Gun-Ho (Jung Jae-Young) is a cold-blooded debt collector, but he is also in debt himself. He goes back to his old apartment that is being demolished and discovers a cassette recorder that his deceased son played with. Gun-Ho doesn't remember how his son died due to his memory suppressing a traumatic event.

On the day that Gun-Ho pays off his debts, he passes out in his car at a stop light. At the hospital he is diagnosed with liver cancer. Gun-Ho learns that he doesn't have much time left to live. He needs to find a liver donor within the next 10 days. His son died five years ago and donated his organs to five other people. Gun-Ho contacts these five people to ask if they can donate a liver to him. Four of those persons refuse. There is one person left.

Cha Ha-Yeon (Jeon Do-Youn) is in prison and she is the last person on Gun-Ho's list. Gun-Ho makes a visit to prison and asks her to donate a liver. She says yes, but under one condition. Ha-Yeon will be released from prison in a few days and Gun-Ho must find a guy named Jo Myung-Suk (Lee Kyeong-Yeong) before then. Gun-Ho is able to fulfill his part of the deal.

On the day of her release, Gun-Ho is there waiting for her. While driving out of the prison parking lot they are ambushed by gangsters looking for Ha-Yeon. They barely escape after a mad car chase. When they stop at a highway rest stop, Gun-Ho goes to get Ha-Yeon medicine. In the meantime, Ha-Yeon jumps into driver's seat and takes off.

Ha-Yeon heads to Busan to get back the money Jo Myung-Suk stole from her. Years ago, Jo Myung-Suk and Ha-Yeon ran a ponzi scheme. Jo Myung-Suk turned Ha-Yeon in to the police as the scapegoat. Meanwhile, Suwayi (Oh Man-Seok), a Korean-Chinese street gang leader, is in hot pursuit of Ha-Yeon for the money he lost to her in the ponzi scheme. Gun-Ho also heads to Busan to get Ha-Yeon to follow through on her deal before it's too late him. The countdown begins
