Naalala ko tuloy nung college ako, sa cubao pa ko pumapasok non 5-9pm ang sched ko, everyday palagi akong nakasabit sa mga patok na jeep. Patok ang tawag dun sa mga magagandang jeep at malalakas ang sounds at humahataw sa bilis.

Ang bilis din ng panahon, meron ng mga fx at mrt pero sa jeep lang pwedeng sabit.

Wireframing the User Experience

One of the more important but often overlooked phase of a development project is often the inclusion of representation of the target audience -- or most importantly any project champions -- in the "Design" phase.

Involving a user in the process is apparently taboo... and I find that not many developers actually do this. Let's take a look at an example scenario that, sadly, I've seen play out far too many times:
1. Process Owner/Project Champion Requests an App

Most of the time, this falls into two categories:
1. PO/PC has an existing business process, and is simply tired of using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to run their multi-million dollar organization.
2. PO/PC is looking to the app to help shape a new business process.

Either way, the PO/PC absolutely has something in mind... and has simply come to you as a tool to bring their idea to life.

2. You take the requirements... and disappear!

At least, that's what the PO/PC thinks. As far as they're concerned, you've used your geekiness to Vulcan Mind Meld with them, you know exactly what they want, "Hell, I gave him our ~~app~~ [spreadsheet]!", and you're off doing... whatever the hell it is that you do.

For your part, the very best of you may take the requirements documents, look around to see what else kinda works, and use that as a jumpstart in an attempt to improve your delivery time of the alpha release.

The very worst of you (and me at times, I'll admit), will use this as a pilot project for some brand new, cutting edge, untested (within your organization or skillset, at least) technology or development techniques.

"Wouldn't it be cool if we could use HTML5 with SQLite offline data access and re-write an entire replication API of the NotesData so I could put this app on Every Single Mobile Device... even tho we only have those old blue BlackBerry devices running OS4 and all they're really asking for is an emergency contact list... BRB, downloading PhoneGap!
3. The next time you call a meeting...

Based on the PO/PC perception, you're meeting to deliver the solution that is exactly what they had in mind. Even down to the background color.

"Neon Green" just screams Sales!

You're calling the meeting to show them your latest portfolio app. It's something that kinda meets their needs, but will rock when you show it off at your next job interview.

... and adding iOS Application Development to your resume is just l33t!
4. You both walk away... unsatisfied.

Your PO/PC can't see how cool your app is, and how amazing of a display it is of the new technology available on the platform.

I mean, just look at how that background color changes when you mouse over it. That's slick!

The PO/PC is frustrated. You walked away for like a month... He's been telling his people that the app would be ready any day now. In fact, he didn't even both reading the meeting invitation, but upon receipt of the invite sent a department-wide email to his team telling them that the app would be launched on the date/time you planned to meet.

But what's this? Half of the columns in his app are missing. It was a lot easier to just enter the data in the columns. He knows where the columns are... so well, in fact, that he doesn't need to look up from the keyboard while he tabs from cell to cell. Sure, there were 65 columns... but he's used to scrolling to the right for 5 minutes looking for the 5th backup fax number for a given contact!

And where the hell's the neon green background?!

You both leave the meeting disgusted with one another.

The PC/PO can't see your genius!

"That guy from IT doesn't know what the hell they're doing!"
5. Lather, Rinse, Repeat

You'll eventually get to the point where you're scheduling status meetings for the project every Friday at 4PM... and you take turns every other weekend canceling and rescheduling the status meeting for the following Monday at 7AM.

When you finally do deploy the application... neither of you are happy with it. Sure, it tracks some contact information, but it's sure not something that you'd show to a potential employer, and the PC/PO still doesn't know why he can't have his Neon Green background.

You finish the project in disgust, and pray that phase 2 never comes.

... and it won't, because the next version of the app [as well as any other projects from this PC/PO] are going to get outsourced.

... yikes, that got dark.

But there's a very simple technique that you can use to make sure this never happens.

Wireframing!

I highly recommend, in the "Design" phase of the project (which should be well before you open any development tools or write a single line of code), that you employ wireframes for User Interface and User Experience development. More importantly, include the Project Champion in the initial "wireframing".

From my personal experience, including the PC in the "Design" of the application -- not to the point where they are weighing in on what technologies are used, of course, but rather how the various user types will interact with the app, etc. --is critical to the short and long term success of the project.

See... the PC will leave the wireframing meeting feeling much more invested in the project since -- per their perception -- it's their design. They've worked with the guy from IT to create something that really works.

They've seen how the app will appear on a mobile device, and can grasp actually understand why having 65 fields on a UI Form just wont' work.

They've seen how their Neon Green background actually looks on a screen... and realize that a more subtle hue is easier on the eyes.

And it's their decision! Sure, we can guide them in certain directions and try to keep them far from others... but at the end of the day, you will have a more invested Project Champion when they feel like they're driving every decision.

... and you'll see an interesting by-product of wireframing with the Project Champion:

The Project Champion will often address scope creep, manage user expectations both upward and downward in the corporate reporting structure, and ultimately become an adoption and usage evangelist for the project!

And at the end of the day, that makes your job a lot easier!

Okay, enough justification, let's get into Wireframing the User Interface for our Mobile XPages app.

Getting Started

[Yeah... this turned out to be a long post!]

There are many rich, full-feature wireframe solutions on the market today. Depending on your needs however, you may be directed to a collaborative-friendly cloud-based solution like Balsamiq Mockups. For me [and for the majority of you out there], there is a free solution that you might not even know about.

The Pencil add-on for Mozilla Firefox Web Browser is a free add-on that I've been using for some time now.

I recommend using the Sketchy Collection (or another drawn-like Collection) to give an approximate look to your wireframes and negate the chance that your PO/PC would think the end-product app UI will

Since I'm acting as the Developer and the Project Champion for the build project in this series, wireframing out a UI/UX was really simple.

Let's take a look at our Home/landing page for our mobile device application:

A simplified UI that will support both touchscreen and non-touchscreen mobile devices.

Keeping with the theme, here's the Contact page:

A simplified but feature-rich Contact page/form for our mobile device app, we start to leverage more on-device external functions like the ability to call, text/sms, email, and even map the address of our contact via an omni-present footer action bar.

In Conclusion...

Now that we understand the desired UI and UX for our app, we can actually start coding!

We can use our wireframes in combination with our requirements documents as development blueprints while our Project Champion is evangelizing the app with authoritative information and not speculation. They're managing scope creep for you -- this is their project after all -- while you deep-dive into the actual project coding.

Caution on Plastic Bottles

My husband has a friend whose mother recently got diagnosed with
breast cancer. The doctor told her women should not drink bottled water
that has been left in a car. The doctor said that the heat and the plastic
of the bottle have certain chemicals that can lead to breast cancer. So
please be careful and do not drink that water bottle that has been left in
a car and pass this on to all the women in your life.

On the Ellen show, Sheryl Crow said this is what caused her breast
cancer. It has been identified as the most common cause of the high
levels of dioxin in breast cancer tissue. Sheryl Crow's oncologist told her:
women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The
heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases
dioxin into the water. Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer
tissue. So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been
left in a car. Pass this on to all the women in your life.

There was this Pinay named Maria who was born and raised in Olongapo City . She met her husband, John while he was stationed at Subic Bay Naval Base.

Maria doesn't have an excellent command of the English language, but she and John manage to communicate.

One day, Maria decided to cook a big dinner for John, so she called John up at work and told him to come home straight from work.

Using @SetViewInfo in a Notes client application to create a user-specific view

The requirement:

Create a "my documents" view for the user.

The obstacle:

@Username can't be used in a shared view selection formula. That's because for a view index calculated by the server, @Username is the name of the server.

Common approaches:

Create a "Desktop private on first use" view; now if you use @Username, it's the user's own name. Drawbacks are that it tends to be slow, especially the first time it's used, takes up space on the user's disk, and updating the design of the view is a challenge since there's nothing to force an update of users' private copies.
Use NotesView.SelectionFormula to update the view's selection formula every time someone opens it. This is a really dumb idea for several reasons: it's slow, it requires users have Designer access, changes to design elements at runtime often don't work well since the client caches design elements, and users would interfere with each other by using the view at the same time. Don't even think about doing this.
Create a single view containing all users' documents, categorized by username. Then use the view in a way that has it display only a single category. There are two ways to do this in the Notes client:
- Embed the view on a form or page design element, and use a Single Category formula such as @Username or @V3UserName. Very easy, but there are some things that don't work so well in an embedded view.
- Open the view as you normally would, but use Postopen view event code to limit the display to the user's category by means of a call to @SetViewInfo.

It's this last technique I describe below.

How to Do It:

The formula for the view Postopen event is:

@SetViewInfo([SetViewFilter]; @UserName; "columnName"; 1; 1)

where you would substitute the actual column name of the categorized column, in place of columnName.

The formula for the view Queryclose must clear the limitation, or it will affect other views in your application. Here's the formula for that:

@SetTargetFrame("frameName");
@UpdateFormulaContext;
@Command([OpenView]; @Subset(@ViewTitle; -1));
@SetViewInfo([SetViewFilter]; ""; "columnName"; 1)

where you need to substitute for frameName, the name of the frame containing your view, and for columnName, the name of the categorized column. This assumes the view is displayed in a frame of a frameset, as is typical for a Notes client application. If it is not the case for your application, you can leave off the first line.

The purpose of opening the view that's already open, as we do in line 3 of the Queryopen formula, is to cause focus to enter that frame, in case it is elsewhere (as it probably will be if you clicked on a link in another frame to switch to a different view). If you don't do this, @SetViewInfo may fail because it's a view command being used in a frame that doesn't contain a view.

Boy Bastos - What is Politics?

So, the little boy goes to his parent's room and finds his mother sound asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to his yaya's room.

Finding the door locked, he looks in the peephole and finds his father in bed with Inday. He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning, the little boy says to his father, "Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now."

The father says, "Magaling, Boy Bastos! Tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about."

The little boy replies, "Si GMA yinayari pala talaga ang Working Class, tapos yung Government walang ginawa kundi tulog lang nang tulog. The People hindi pinapansin and the Future... nakalubog na sa ebak!"

THE MARCH 7 ARTICLE ON Manny Villar's house along Moriones Street in Tondo
confirmed the belief that he was never poor, never spent his Christmas on
the street and never swam in a pool of garbage. In the early 1960s, if you
had a three-story house in a 60-square-meter lot in the business district of
Tondo, you were considered an aristocrat.

Not too far from that Moriones house were shanties leading to the pier where
children went to the nearby public schools for education. Such was not the
case of Villar: he went to Holy Child Catholic School for his elementary
education and to Mapua for high school. Coming from Moriones going to Mapua,
Villar had to pass by three outstanding public high schools: Jose Abad
Santos High School, Arellano High School and Teodora Agoncillo High School,
and public schools in the latter part of the 1950s and 1960s were at their
best.

But not for the Villar children. Because their father was a white-collar
employee and they had a businesswoman for a mother, Manny and his siblings
were able to study in the best private schools nearby. They had corned beef
for breakfast (as told in Villar's ad with Boy Abunda) and I am pretty sure
suahe and other seafoods for lunch or dinner.

During the times that Villar claimed he was poor, his family actually
belonged to the AB and upper C economic strata or the top 10 percent of the
population. As in the C-5 controversy, in the conversion of agricultural
land in Iloilo, in the landgrabbing of the Dumagats' land in Norzagaray and
his questionable use of socialized housing funds among many others, Villar
shows a penchant for covering the truth.

I hope television's investigative journalists can dig deeper into this so
the poor people who are being used will find out the truth.

THE BASICS OF CASH FLOW

The basic is. What pattern do you see if you will get a P100.00 bill and monitor where and how it is transferred from 1 possessor to the other? How does it flow? The pattern for a typical Pinoy is.

You earn from your work, you spend it on food, gadgets, clothing and other basic needs. Before you reach the next payday, paubos na yung pera mo. But that's ok payday is just a few days ahead and it doesn't matter if I run out of money, I am expecting money again any time soon.

This cycle goes on and on and you make some sidelines or create other ways to earn but it seems that money was never enough. (I am tempted to explain further pero usapan... basics lang).

So you can't leave the job that you have because a week without work would affect the cash flow you have to support your family and needs. As much as you wanted to accept another job, the gap would make you pay less for a couple of days, which makes you a slave to your boss.

At least, you have a job to support your needs.

So to illustrate.. .Cash is flowing inside your pocket.

Years have gone by doing your monotonous routine.

Question... what if you get fired? Or you were forced to retire because there are new and younger people ready to take your place. What would you do?

As an OFW, Makati Executive, Top Salesman, Engineer, Attorney, Teacher, etc... What if it all ends? The sweet cash that enters your pocket every 15 th and 30th suddenly comes to a halt.

There are two things you can buy with your money... An asset and a liability. To describe each... An asset brings money inside your pocket; a liability takes money out of your pocket. Another way to see, it is that an asset if you buy one, will bring the money you spent for it back to you 2 or 3 folds. A liability, when you buy it will not give your money back at all.

I have seen OFWs get back to the country with gold chains at kung pwede lang limang shades ang isuot ng sabay-sabay gagawin nya eh... dvd, component, jackets, clothes, inuman, pulutan, party, pabango... hindi na makalakad sa dami ng bitbit...

At s'yempre mga empleyado natin dito sa bansa na lingo-lingo bago cell phone at mags ng kotse.. hindi na nga magkasya ang damit sa aparador, tapos pag umaga sasabihin... . wala na akong maisuot.

Guys, esep-esep... what you bought... will it bring money back to you? I know what you have in mind... you have to enjoy what you worked hard for. That's right, but think of something that will last... think of your future.

I have seen the worst of people who were abogado de kampanilya, executive secretaries of top rank business men, people who worked for big companies, earned a fortune and got a big retirement pay by the millions... Now.... Wala na.

Why? Because of their cash flow... went in... went out.

I need not to mention basketball players, actors, singers, etc... Check what is their career path... next after acting, singing and playing... POLITICS. Kasi, 'yung million na kinita nila, puro liability ang binili.

Going back... all the liability they bought, ibinenta ng mura! I'm wearing a gold chain now, which I got from a seaman... he bought it for P35,000 and sold it for 8,000 to me. Hindi po asset ang alahas! Bakit? Totoo na tumataas ang value n'ya pero kapag gutom ka na, kahit palugi ibebenta mo! (wala bang aaray?) Cell phones... dvd players etc. pati bahay at kotse... that's the cash flow of most OFWs...

The question is ... " WHAT IF THE INCOME STOPS?"

Sa Pinoy, ganito: anak... mag-aral kang maigi, at pag tanda namin... ikaw na bahala sa amin ha.... Hindi po ba maling-mali. ..

You have to establish something today that will take care of your future.

Teka, teka... eh ano ang dapat gawin para hindi mangyari yan?

You must create a source of income that will continually make money flow inside your pocket. Start a business! While you are working as an executive or an OFW, or a professional. .. START A BUSINESS and MASTER that business till you get out of that company. Para kapag tumigil ang income mo sa kanila... may susuporta pa din sa iyo hanggang pag-tanda mo!

Now don't tell me to invest my money on pensions and plans... NO WAY ! Narinig n'yo na siguro yung .... Naku ayaw ko na magbanggit.. .. 'yung mga nagbayad at hindi nakapag-claim. .. sila pa ang dinimanda at nag-piyansa! !! HUWAG MO I-ASA ANG PAGTANDA MO SA IBA! GUMAWA KA NG SARILI MONG BALON NG PERA! KAHIT MALIIT PA 'YAN, SARILI MO AT HINDI KA AASA SA IBANG TAO...

Imagine yourself when you reach an older age... (aruy ko,,, baka yung iba sa inyo about that age... tabi tabi po...Ako po sa mga nagtatanong. .. I'm 37 years old. Naabutan ko pa si Michael Jackson at hinele po ako ng nanay ko sa mga kanta ng hagibis...). You have money that the company gave you as your retirement pay... what will you do?

You can consume the money till your old... eh kung hindi umabot? Masamang damo ka pala... at hindi ka kaagad kinuha ni Lord. Eh pang age 65 lang yung naipon mo na budget.

Or maybe, you can start a business and use the money for capital... Kapatid... 9 out of 10 businesses, FAILED... yung isang magsa-succeed, gagayahin pa ng kapitbahay mo instead na mag-franchise sa 'yo... think! At age 50, you are struggling trying to make a business work! What if it fails?!
Eh ano nga ba ang sagot?

The answer is, stop buying liabilities and instead buy assets now. I don't care if it is a banana-Q store, balot, ice candy or a sari-sari store, etc... start now! Because, your experience here will teach you what to do in the future. It's so hard to struggle in business when you are 60 yrs old.

You have to create a source of income separated from the source of income from your work. That when the time comes that you have to stop working, you will have your own source of money! Create assets, start a business that will be there to support you and your family. I AM NOT TELLING YOU TO QUIT YOUR JOB! I'm telling you to start a business while you're working and stop spending your money on liabilities and start putting them on assets!

Ang pera kapag pinambili mo ng LIABILITY... hindi na babalik... ang ASSET... BABALIK.

Teka... masama ba bumili ng mga magagandang gamit? Hindi! Siguraduhin mo lang na ang pambili mo nun ay galing sa asset mo. The business has to be prioritized! Mawalan ka man ng trabaho, may negosyo kang palalaguin.

If before, nabubuhay ka naman ng iisa sapatos mo, huwag mo baguhin 'yun... dati, nagdyi-jeep ka lang... 'wag ka na munang mag-FX...

Create assets and lessen liabilities. Invest and learn now... mag-negosyo!

Eh anong negosyo? Any, as long as you think it is work and doable! I am still looking for partners for my HOME MASSAGE SERVICE! SPA MAGIC! And my business CAR MAGIC is still franchising. .. (joke lang ... baka sabihin nyo nag pro-promote lang ako eh...But I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT ALL MY BUSINESSES ARE ORIGINAL AND ALL ARE GRAND ASSETS!

I started all my businesses with a very small capital. If I used that money to buy a gadget, new shoes or any liability... baka wala lahat ng negosyo ko at wala na akong makain ngayon.
