So i get a refurbished iPhone from at&t’s website and it comes fast but it is basically an expensive paperweight. Here is what the forzen apple screen looks like when i power it on:

I have tried everything, replacing the USB cable, trying a new install of iTunes, Upgrading my USB drivers, I even tried a different computer and still get this “Unknown Error 23″. I tried rolling back to firmware 2.0, 2.01, 2.1 and a few others to no avail. So now I have to send this paperweight iPhone back to att and wait for a new one. I tried both a hard reset and a soft reset as follows:

iPhone Hard Reset Procedure

Press and hold the home button (the big circle with the square inside below the screen) and the sleep wake button (the button on top of the iPhone to the right) simultaneously.
Hold both buttons simultaneously for a few seconds, Ignore the “Slide to power off (which I dont even get on my bricked phone at the moment)” and keep holding them down until….
The iPhone should now shutdown automatically – (fade to black)
Turn the iPhone back on by hitting the sleep/wake button.
You should now see the Apple logo, your iPhone is restarting and thus booting up.
You have completed a hard reset successfully (in theory).

iPhone Soft Reset Procedure

To perform a soft reset, press and hold the iPhone’s Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for several seconds, or until you see the apple logo on the screen. (This action did NOT reset my iPhone and I was very pissed at this point).

iPhone/Touch restore procedure

Hold down the circular button with the square below the screen WHILE plugging your iPhone or into your computer. You should get the iTunes icon with an arrow on the screen. Here is a picture…

Now… iTunes should detect that an iPhone is connected in restore mode. To install your own firmware file, shift click the restore button in iTunes and browse for the correct IPSW file (sometimes you need to rename from ZIP if you downloaded from web). Hope this works for you.

As a last resort after failed attempts at firmware rollbacks, I tried the jailbreak/unlock software made by pwned but that was unsuccessful, so now I have to send my refurbished phone back to at&t to get re-refurbished.

Whether the marketplace is ready or not, the Big Guns in consumer electronics are about to make their move at the dawn of the New Year.

Screenshots sent to Gizmodo from an anonymous source reveal the possible price and tariff details of the Nexus One Google phone, along with some extra hardware details.

Next Tuesday, Google is expected to announce its long-rumored Nexus One smartphone. It is undoubtedly designed to run the Google Android operating system for cellphones, which the search giant introduced more than a year ago. Android was envisioned as a major breakthrough in cellphones because it offered an "open" operating system – i.e., one that other companies could use and design applications for. At the time, this strategy was compared to that of Microsoft Windows, which broke the market hegemony of Apple's decidedly non-open OS in the mid-1980s and within a decade, turned Apple into a niche company. This time around, the new Android phones were supposed to break the hegemony of the Apple iPhone.

So far, it hasn't quite worked out that way with Android. A number of cell phone companies – notably Motorola, HTC, and Samsung – have adopted Android and seen impressive sales. However, this time around Apple, though still exhibiting much of its old "closed" and proprietary ways, has learned some important lessons over the last 20 years.

For one thing, Apple understands, better perhaps than any company on the planet, the importance of being not only perpetually innovative – but with a vast and loyal army of Apple fanatics behind it – to regularly take category-busting risks. Thus, the amazing run, beginning a decade ago, of the iMac, MacBook, iPod and iPhone. These landmark (and in the case of the iPod, historic) products not only were ambitious in their goals and beautifully designed, but they also exhibited multiple features that were so innovative that they forced the competition to spend years catching up – and by then, Apple had already moved on to the next breakthrough.

Military theorists like to say that the goal of combat is to get inside your opponent's "decision horizon" – that is, to move so quickly that the enemy can't respond in time before you have moved on to the next victory. That's exactly what Apple, at its best, has done to the consumer electronics world … and in the process has left competitors reeling, loyal customers thrilled, and not least, Apple regaining its lost market share and making its shareholders wealthy.

Google will finally reveal its first mobile phone tomorrow after months of frenzied speculation about its arrival, it emerged today.

The Nexus One handset, which uses software designed by the internet giant, has been developed to take on the dominant iPhone.

Full details of the Google-branded touchscreen device - manufactured by Taiwanese company HTC - have mostly been kept under wraps despite occasional leaks.

But tomorrow, Google's founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page will host a press conference at their California headquarters and finally show off the phone to the world.

New reports today suggest the Nexus One, named after a type of ‘replicant’ cyborg in Ridley Scott’s science-fiction film Blade Runner, will be sold online for around £300.

It is understood that the handset, said to have a larger screen than Apple’s iPhone and with a more powerful five-megapixel camera, will be sold in the U.S. before arriving in Europe.

The smartphone, which uses Google’s Android mobile phone operating system, reportedly has a 3.7in-long screen and runs on an exchangeable 3.7V battery.

It comes with a 4GB memory but also offers users the option of adding a 32GB memory card, according to technology website endgadget.com.

Buyers will be able to access the Web, play video games and use Google’s free GPS maps.

Its unlocked version will allow consumers to use any wireless internet provider of their choice.

The Nexus One looks similar to the iPhone but has a few distinguishing features such as a two-dimensional bar code capable of identifying each individual handset.

Google's phone is a big step for the search giant that, until now, has offered phones only in partnership with other companies.

It set its sights on developing its own so-called ‘smartphone’ because they are a becoming an increasingly important way of accessing the internet.

As more people go online using their mobile phones and the Web, the firm aims to deliver more ads to them.

The search engine giant hopes to take on Apple’s iconic iPhone, which has become, since its launch in 2007, the benchmark in the rapidly growing market.

Google revealed its open-source Android operating system nearly two years ago.

Since then, a dozen Android phones by companies such as Samsung and Motorola have been launched, including the recent, heavily promoted Motorola Droid.

N900: A new hope for Nokia

The coming of the N900 is Nokia's right move to maintain its lead in the mobile industry. It has all the ingredients for a mobile phone to be successful. Others say that the N900 is not for everybody, that it's only for the geeks and the early adaptors who really love technology; I say, why would you deprive yourself of a phone like this? Read on and decide.

The Nokia N900 has a multi-tasking capability that allows many applications to run simultaneously because of its 600-MHZ processor, up to 1GB application memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration.

OpenGL stands for Open Graphics Library and is the industry standard for an application program interface for defining 2D and 3D objects. It is the same graphics acceleration technology used in the iPhone 3Gs.

The greatest achievement of the N900 is putting "real" Internet into a mobile platform. It features a high-resolution WVGA touch screen and fast internet connectivity with 10 Mbps HSDPA and 2 Mbps HSUPA support and WLAN. It uses Mozilla-based web browser with Adobe Flash 9.4 support making the websites look the way they would on any computer.

Among all the smartphones available in the Technews Lab, the browser of the N900 is the best. Yes, it is better than iPhone's Safari web browser as it supports not only Flash 9.4 and plugins but also Javascript, frames, CSS and most everything a desktop browser does.

Personally, the Nokia N900 we have looks really promising as anybody's main phone for its good build quality. Nokia has been known for having "user friendly" phones but we got bored of just having easy to use phones. We demanded more features, faster speed and additional applications.

When Nokia offered us music we chose to get the iPhone; when Nokia gave us email we decided to get the Blackberry. Now Nokia is showing off "real" internet in a mobile platform and we have no choice but to get it with the N900 because it's the best among all the available phones today.

The N900 would put Nokia back in the playing field where Smartphones play. It is undoubtedly a statement from Nokia that it's still a force to be reckoned with when it comes to smartphones.

Nokia N97 touchscreen betters its Apple counterpart by improving the resolution. Although Sony Xperia X1 has a better resolution, having just 65K colors and smaller size limits its ability. 3.5 inch screen seems just right to view movies at full glory on a hand held device. But again N97 does have multitouch like iPhone which will be big factor especially when browsing on the device.

Nokia probably missed a cue by not having a OLED display known for great contrast and pitch black color but then the price could well have been a few hundred dollars more.

Coming on to the weight, we again have no clear winner here. The N97 is about 5g heavier than the Xperia X1 but 8g lighter than T-Mobile G1.

The slide out QWERTY keyboard sits at a pretty angle that makes viewing a hell lot easier. The Xperia and the G1 has flat slide out QWERTY keyboards that require you to adjust your viewing angle in landscape mode. N97 receives a thumbs up here from our side.

Overall, the Nokia N97 has a polished design that looks much better than T-Mobile G1 and might give Apple iPhone a close competition in that department.

Design is an important aspect for any cell phone and it has been taken special care of by Nokia in the N97. The Nokia N97 has a design that is very similar to the Sony Xperia X1. It has a 3.5″ TFT touchscreen with a slide out QWERTY keyboard. First glance at the N97 reminds you of the Apple iPhone with a huge screen and only a single button at the bottom. There are a couple of touch buttons too which function as Call and End keys.

Comparing the four, N97 is the tallest but the slimmest slide out QWERTY touchscreen we have had till now. It is narrower than the Apple iPhone and you can easily make out the difference when both are placed side by side. However slimmest just to say on the advertising boards as its thickness goes up to 18.3mm when measured near the camera. Not much to choose in terms of dimensions as they stack up with minor differences.

A lot of people have complained about it being thick and not easy to carry around. To put it straight, you put in a QWERTY keyboard in there, it will take up space and add to the dimensions to the phone. Take it or leave it.

The Nokia N97 was unveiled by Nokia today in its Nokia 2008 World event held in Barcelona, Spain. The Nokia N97 has created flutter all around the world with its brilliant design and specifications. A device from Nokia was long due that would take on the iPhone and other touch monsters such as the T-Mobile G1 and Sony Xperia X1 and it hopes to go one up on them.

Nokia in its keynote converted a Nokia N95 into Nokia N97. It even took a dig at Apple iPhone’s camera calling it a “toy” which has been placed at the corner of the device. Even Google wasn’t spared and its Google Maps came under fire for its static nature unlike the new Nokia Maps 2.0 Touch which now have dynamic elements.

Over two years ago we thought we knew what Nokia had in mind for their secret N97 phone. And we thought we had pictures too. Boy, were we wrong but then again nobody else had any facts about the future N-series handset. How were we to know that Nokia will launch its N97 only on December 2nd 2008? Here's what we wrote back then:

Well now, what do we have here? This device is rumored to be N97 and only time will tell if its Nokia's latest offering or a result of someone's Photoshop skills! According to the rumor mill, the handset is equipped with a 3 inch display and will in all probability have a 5 Megapixel camera with 20x digital zoom! The N97 promises both fun and functionality and will also include a miniSD card and 20GB of internal memory! We shall keep you updated on this one!

Motorola DROID

The current article is based on our review of the Motorola DROID, being the CDMA version of the MILESTONE and currently available through Verizon in the US. Both phones are almost identical with a few differences in the software.

Introduction:

You´ve probably noticed that Motorola has not been doing great in financial terms lately, registered record-breaking losses and has been slowly, but steadily, losing ground on the cell phone market and the major winners that cashed in on the weakness of the former leader turned out to be Samsung and LG. The company decided to cast its lot in with Android, the young operating system that is picking up speed as we speak and gaining popularity incredibly rapidly.

By the time of the current review, Motorola has released two handsets utilizing the open source platform developed by Google and they are known under different names depending on the particular region - the first is the Motorola DEXT called the CLIQ in the US. Today we are reviewing the second and more famous handset of the duo, the Motorola MILESTONE. Its CDMA version, the DROID, has already rolled out in the US through Verizon and caused an incredible stir, an outburst of zealous interest that is best described as furore.

The appearance of the Motorola MILESTONE in Europe was less ecstatic and relatively calmer, which is rather odd really, because both devices utilize identical hardware, not to mention they are the first to run Android 2.0. Still, there are certain software differences between them that albeit minor and insignificant at first sight, might have a huge impact on the overall feel and kick you get out of using the phone. We will tell you more about them later on, now let´s first take a look at what´s in the box and pay thorough attention to the phone design.

Design:

This is one of the thinnest landscape-sliding QWERTY devices available on the market,something that we haven't seen too much of from Motorola in the past. It's overall footprint is similar to the iPhone 3GS, except for the fact that its slightly thicker (13.7mm) because of the inclusion of the physical QWERTY. When comparing it to something like the HTC Touch Pro2, it doesn't look as massive – making it seem a lot sleeker and more streamlined. Frankly, the Motorola MILESTONE is built like a tank,as its outer shell radiates a feeling of solid construction that should withstand most of the wear and tear it'll be put through. In addition, its metallic construction adds some weight to the MILESTONE, but of course it’s something expected with such high-quality materials. We definitely enjoy the feeling of the soft matte coating on the rear, how it hugs onto the metallic materials, and that it compliments it well when placed in the hand. Even though its slim looks may fool your eyes in guessing its weight (169 grams), it won't be as noticeable when you close it up and throw it in your pocket. Motorola meticulously went through every portion of this handset to make sure they came out with something that would separate its design from the existing crop.

The screen deserves special mention, as it is a whopping 4 inches long. It is also a highly-responsive capacitive touchscreen, with a resolution of 800 x 345 pixels and graphical quality that is truly excellent. It is very fluid and responsive, not requiring a great deal of pressure to operate it. Additionally, it is programmed to support multitouch, for those applications that have that functionality.
The devices sports the latest LG 3D interface, known as the S-class UI. The home screen is presented as a customizable cube, with multiple faces. The user can drag widgets onto the screen, from a bar that runs along the bottom edge.
The main menu is divided into 4 horizontal rows of icons, where each row doubles up as a category. The icons can be scrolled through from left to right, and back.
The camera is an adequate 5 megapixels, in tune with the current industry standards. The camera application is well-designed, with controls on both sides of the viewfinder to enable easy two-handed operation. There is auto-focus with the basic other camera controls, like contrast and white balance. Video recording is exceptionally good; as the phone is capable of taking very good quality video recordings.
Video playback is crystal clear, with audio holding up its own as well. The large screen is a treat for video enthusiasts, as the true aspect ratio is maintained admirably.
The web browser is another application that is a joy to use on the BL40, as in the horizontal view the webpages are visible exceptionally well. There is no horizontal scrolling required at all. The browser also supports multitouch, and the user has the option to zoom in using double taps or the famous pinch zoom.
There are two onscreen keyboards - the standard alphanumeric one in portrait mode, and the huge QWERTY one in landscape. The buttons are spaced out generously, allowing ample space around each key.
There is 1 GB internal memory packaged into the phone, and the microSD card slot under the battery panel allows the user to extend the limit by 32 GB.
