Last March Grovil joined the 3rd Pila Festival. The Festival showcased Pila's finest products as well as other popular products from the province of Laguna. Just recently Grovil decided to venture and invest in cultivating Oyster Mushrooms. The Mushrooms are cultivated by Fungi grown out of an overflowing Grovil saw Dust. Saw dust are the remains and waste of Grovil wooden products. With the right process and weather, mushrooms can grow in abundance daily.

Oyster mushrooms are getting more popular this days as they are sold as ingredients for soup and other dishes. In Food Bazaar places like Mercato Centrale Makati, Oyster Mushrooms are sold by Ping-Gu as munchy crackers called mushroom fries.

The Grovil chocolate Beater. Made out of fine hard wood.

I was in Fely's J's in Grennbelt 5 a couple of months ago and was surprise to see one of our products in their gift packages. It was a hot cocoa gift set. The set includes some fine Chocolate tablets from Batangas, with cute little white glass cups and a very familiar wooden chocolate beater packed in a classy brown cardboard Box.

Chocolate beaters are often use for beating chocolate mixtures for different chocolate desserts and pastries. It is used by placing the handle in the middle of your palms while spinning the tool in a chocolate mixture inside a bowl or jar. In the Philippines, the chocolate beater is widely known as the "Batirol". It is used as a tool to mix and crush Chocolate tablets which in turn becomes the popular Filipino Hot Chocolate called "Cholate de Batirol".

To be honest I don't remember any transactions with Fely J's sigh... and I can be wrong.. this might not be our chocolate beater but most of the time you know your product when you see it.

The 11th Kesong Puti Festival in Laguna

The famous Kesong Puti or the so called Filipino white cheese was celebrated in its Annual 11th Kesong Puti Festival in Sta.Cruz Laguna this April. Kesong Puti or the Philippine white cheese is a soft, served fresh, similar to cottage cheese, made from un-skimmed carabao's milk, salt and rennet. It has a soft, close texture and slight salty taste. It's is popularly use as a spread for sandwiches and the Philippine National bread, the soft and hot Pandesal.

The Government of Sta Cruz, Laguna organized this festival in order to promote this famous product of Laguna. and also help promote the different small entrepreneurs and cheese makers. There were also lessons in making this specialty white cheese for people who want to get into the industry and for the people who are looking for other means of income with such business.

Also in the festivals were cultural shows and different Laguna specialties and goo-die booths. Grovil also joined as a guest company, as they sold their different Wooden Kitchenware and House ware items. A little Chinese-Filipino War Veterans booth was also in place in the premises to commemorate Philippine's Anual Day of Valor.

The Grovil Booth at the La La Laguna Festival

Last week Grovil joined the 3rd La La Guna Festival. Grovil opened a booth selling again its well known wooden products. The Festival is an annual event that showcases the products and specialties of the 25 towns and 5 little cities of Laguna. The event started from March.8, 2013 and ended on March.17, 2013.

The event was very popular among the folks as it was always pack during the start of night even until the early dawn. The event produced a lot of shows , like the annual Beauty Contest for the Miss and Mr, Laguna, musical parades, talent shows for talented kids of the municipality, Photo contest and even the unique gay beauty contest for Lagunaeno bisexuals. The event was filled with different products from handicrafts, RTW's , pasalubong and other merchandise. Food was also great as you can see different food kiosk everywhere. Buko Shakes (an abundant delicacy and a laguna favorite) and the ever popular Shawarma sandwiches were very popular among the crowd.

It was also great to see the different display booths of the different towns and cities in Laguna. It definitely represented each of the towns cultures.The booths were creative and extravagant. as it displayed the different products, and capabilities of each town.

Grovil is one with the government in continuing to provide opportunity and livelihood to the people of Laguna with the products it provides and in the future we are hoping that this La La Laguna event will be a yearly success.

The La La Laguna Festival is a Festival of Life.

MANILA, Philippines - Help beat the energy crisis. Use charcoal briquettes.

“Charcoal briquettes are a mixture of charcoal and starch molded under pressure,” explained the Los Baños-based Department of Science and Technology-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI).

“Made of charcoal powder recycled from charcoal wastes, briquettes are 50 percent cheaper than liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). They are also more cost-effective than wood charcoal as they burn longer and more steadily while emitting very little smoke,” said FPRDI officer-in-charge Felix B. Tamolang.

Citing results of FPRDI studies, Tamolang pointed out that briquettes are ideal fuel for many Filipinos as, unlike LPG, they do not have to be bought in bulk. They come in small packs well within a daily wage earner’s budget.

He added: “Aside from homes and restaurants, charcoal briquettes may also be used in poultries and bakeries. Quality briquettes sell well abroad, especially in Europe, the United States, Japan, Korea, and Malaysia.”

For cooperatives and businessmen who want to go into charcoal briquetting, FPRDI has developed a simple, manually operated machine that can produce 2,400 kilos of briquettes a month.

FPRDI engineer Belen B. Bisana computed that producing 2,400 kilos of coconut shell briquettes a month needs an investment of about P61,000. This covers equipment and tools, raw materials, labor, and packaging material.

“Our studies show that charcoal briquetting is a profitable enterprises,” she said, as reported by Rizalina K. Araral of FPRDI.

Locally, the best material to use are coconut shell charcoal wastes, as they have the highest heating value, although sawdust, sugarcane bagasse, coconut husk, and pili shell charcoal wastes are also good alternatives.

Also involved in the FPRDI charcoal briquetting project are engineers Punte Palmano and Allan Bondad and Norma Torreta.

In a recent Cabinet meeting, President Gloria Arroyo ordered several government agencies, among them DOST, National Housing Authority (NHA), and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to implement a charcoal briquetting program that will showcase the FPRDI project’s viability, especially in the provinces.

“For several years now, a family corporation in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley, has been successfully producing charcoal briquettes which are exported to Japan,” Bisana reported. – Rudy A. Fernandez
