National Shrine and Parish of the Divine Mercy, Marilao Bulacan

As I mentioned in a previous post, D studied in an university in Malolos, Bulacan for his Master of Arts in Education major in Cultural Education.

So when he was preparing all the necessary requirements as candidate for graduation, we would drive (about one hour and 30 minutes) to Malolos ever so often.

I would then plan side trips within Bulacan to explore before our way back home.

One really warm and humid afternoon in June 2026, we drove to Marilao to visit this national shrine. 45 minutes away from Malolos, located in a main street bustling with foot traffic, tricycles, jeeps and private vehicles all jostling for position as it is typical in a provincial town.

Ample parking spaces, it is a sprawling compound with a grotto, giant stations of the cross, a wide open area with a massive statue of the Divine Mercy on top of a building and of course the main Parish itself.

It had just stopped raining so the grounds were wet amidst the stifling humidity levels which precipitated my active sweat glands to go into overload!

I actually miss our Bulacan adventures now that this phase is over.

Ocean Park, Hong Kong

The last time we went to Ocean Park in Hong Kong, my parents were still alive. I believe it was sometime in 2009 or 2010, yes that long ago.

On the eve of my flight (February 9, 2025) back home to face major uncertainty in my married life, sister dearest and I decided to return to Ocean Park to enjoy the cool February weather in Hong Kong and clear the cobwebs from my mind and try to boost my spirits from dealing with the lowest point of my life.

There is now a MRT line that goes straight to the Ocean Park, making it very accessible for visitors. For some reason, it seems smaller than I remembered. The first time we went there it seemed like we walked for miles and miles just to get to the different attractions. Maybe this time around, we did not go to all the attractions, merely the 'cute' ones. Or dare I say the ones which our 50 year old selves could manage without toppling over from exhaustion. LOL

The Ocean Park Hong Kong houses several giant pandas, notably the first locally born giant panda twins Jia Jia and De De who were born in August 2024.

The baby pandas have their own enclosure which unfortunately just closed for the day, a few minutes when we got there.

Their parents Ying Ying and Le Le were gifted to Hong Kong by China.

An An and Ke Ke are the names of the other pandas also living in the park.

I believe this is An An but I may be wrong.

You cannot really tell pandas apart, can you?

After the pandas, we took the cable car to reach the summit where we watched the dolphin and sea lion show, ogled at some aquatic creatures and enjoyed the view from a ferris wheel.

I like taking cable cars, I don't have a fear of heights and the strong winds that sway the cabin don't bother me. This certain feeling of calmness embraces you and makes you feel invincible. Being so high up in the sky amidst the clouds with the cool February breeze cushions you far far away from reality. Even for a few minutes, you feel like you can conquer anything and nothing and nobody can harm your already bruised soul. It was refreshing, in every sense of the word.

It was almost dusk when we were on the ferris wheel, by then the wind was really cold. My hands were freezing so I did not take any more pictures from above. It was a short ride less than 8 minutes but the view of the harbour and the sea was panoramicly fantastic.

It was already dark when we took the cable car back down. It hits different when darkness and the biting cold envelopes you. You adjust your vision to the pitch black with just the faraway bright lights of the attractions of Ocean Park flickering in the distance.

A serene almost eerie sentiment creeps up but mind you, it wasn't fear, at all. Just some nagging thoughts of heading back to reality.

Even the pandas at Ocean Park Hong Kong told me it was time to go home and face reality. A very jolting reality that I never thought was possible but would rattle my entire core. Yet, it did and it has never been the same ever, again. I’m NOT the same, never will be.

August 2026: 4 pictures recap

Wow a whole month has passed since my last post. August was quite hectic. These four pictures are the photographic evidence.

Let me explain: We had four volumes of the hubby's books about Rizal to edit and revise incessantly. It was an exhausting experience. Editing the text block then sending them back to the publisher. Back and forth, a never ending cycle of editing, editing and more editing.

We also celebrated what would have been Dad's 90th birthday last August 22. It has been 5 years since we lost him, tragically. There is not a single day that passes by when I don't think of Dad. Truth be told, I still have nightmares from time to time about how we lost him. I continue to hope and pray for the eternal repose of his soul. May perpetual light shine upon him and may he rest in God's heavenly abode. Miss you and love you, Dad.

After 7 long and excruciating years filled with anxiety, heartbreak, financial issues and everything else in between, D finally got his Master of Arts in Education, major in Cultural Education from La Consolacion University in Malolos Bulacan. Yes you read that right, Bulacan. This was completed in April 2026 after he submitted the two copies of his final thesis in hardbound form.

August 29, 2026, Saturday his graduation and investiture ceremony was set at 6 A.M. At 4:30AM, we were on our way to Bulacan. There was a heavy downpour, the car wipers were working like crazy yet you can hardly see anything. Monsoon rains coupled with a strong typhoon was wreaking havoc. We both know for certain that the province of Bulacan gets flooded easily merely from slight precipitation.

Barely 15 minutes into our road trip, we decided to make a u-turn and not go through with attending the graduation rites. Yes, we were both crestfallen but on hindsight it was the best decision. We later learned from the news that an 8 km long traffic jam on NLEX got people stranded for hours and hours on end due to the flood waters. His graduation for his masteral studies was an event I was really looking forward to with much enthusiasm. Yet I'm just grateful we were spared from the onslaught of the rains, the flooded expressway and the horrific traffic jam.

The last day of August was the deadline for the submission of the DBM CHED enhanced JC3 for the reclassification of faculty positions in state universities and colleges. Otherwise known as promotion to a higher sub rank faculty position. The whole month of August was spent compiling the required documents. By documents, I mean tons of certificates, research papers, MOAs, student evaluations, supervisor evaluations, creative works, designation documents. Every single work output from the period covering the year 2023 to 2026 which will advance your career development was needed. The days of suspended government work (due to the monsoon rains and the flooding) though contributed to the delay in procuring several documents.

Since we skipped the graduation, we were given more time to combine all the requirments, print them out, scan the document for online submission, arrange the hard copies chronologically in an expanding folder. By sheer force of every aching muscle of our bodies and mostly by God's Mercy and Grace we were able to get everything done by 5:30 PM on August 31, Sunday. He physically handed his folder to the QAC office, just beating the deadline by 30 minutes!

Phew, that basically sums up August 2026. Even though, it was quite daunting, hectic, stressful, many sleepless nights, with bouts of hunger, and massive exhaustion to the highest levels, I would still do it all over again, in a heartbeat. Strange, huh?

National Museum of Natural History

Well look at that, it is already August of the year 2026! Imagine that?!! Where did all the time go? All 31 days of July were pretty hectic. With an added blend of toxicity, sheer exhaustion and everything else in between.

But I always tell myself with gratitude. With God's mercy, I survive. We all do, don't we? Moving forward, let's include love to sweeten the blend. So we don't lose ourselves, okay?

Speaking of L.O.V.E. Allow me to backtrack to the 14th of February 2026. In some strange, twisted way we still celebrate V-day, despite everything that happened. We even wore red, go figure!

This year, it fell on a Saturday so we went to the Museum of Natural History in Manila. Our main purpose was to see Lolong, the world's largest saltwater crocodile in captivity. His stuffed remains are permanently displayed in the Museum of Natural History.

The museum was reopened to the public in 2018 with 12 galleries and halls. Its collections range from the mountains to the seas. The Tree of Life structure holding prominence in the main hall near the entrance. Aptly described by the current generation as very instagrammable (a new word in my vocabulary).

Entrance is FREE. Tuesdays to Sundays, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Lolong was no where to be found!!! It was not displayed as it was under maintenance.

Good reason to revisit the National Museum of Natural History.

Wat Mangkon Kamalawat (Dragon Lotus Temple) Bangkok (May 03, 2025)

From Wat Traimit, we rode a tuk tuk to our next temple. Weaving in and out of traffic, through small alleys and main roads, riding these small motorized, three-wheeled, meter-less, tourist traps 'vehicles' is quite an adventurous experience in itself.

I decided to make a separate post for this specific temple because it is one of the most elaborate temples I've visited. On the outside, you would hardly notice it is a place of worship, because it is situated along a busy street. But inside, it is ornately resplendent, and still maintains its sacrosanctity.

Formerly known as Wat Leng Noei Yi, it was built in 1871 by a Chinese monk named Master Chin Wang. It was renamed during the reign of King Rama V as Wat Mangkon Kamalawat. The largest and most significant Chinese Buddhist temple in Bangkok, located in the Pom Prap Sattru Phai district of Bangkok's Chinatown.

Admission is free. Dress appropriately. Always observe silence.

Since we were already in the Chinatown vicinity, we walked for about two blocks to the rows of street food stalls and restaurants for early dinner. We are NOT that adventurous though to eat scorpions and other insects for our meals. No, thanks! LOL

As the sun set and the neon signs lighted up, the crowd grew thicker but it was still manageable because the side walk and the street is wide enough. After scouring the available street foods, we settled for a bowl fish maw soup, some barbecued pork belly and iced Fanta.

Temples in Bangkok

In the same manner that I like visiting old churches here in the Philippines, the same fascination goes to places of worship of other religious denomination in other countries.

The kingdom of Thailand (formerly known as Siam) is predominantly a Buddhist nation. Whenever sister dearest would ask "what is the plan for the day?". My usual answer "let's go visit some temples!" Join me as we explore ~~three~~ two Buddhist temples which we visited, separately.

Wat Yannawa (April 28, 2025) commonly known as the Boat Temple is in the Sathon district. We visited this boat shaped temple when we alighted at one of the stops on the Chao Phraya tourist boat.

Traimit Withayaram Temple (May 03, 2025) is the home of the Sukhothai Traimit Golden Buddha which is the largest Golden Buddha image/statue in the world. Made of pure gold, it measures 12 feet 5 inches in diameter with a height of 15 feet 9 inches from the base of the crown. It weighs about 5.5 tonnes with a price value of 28.5 million pounds, dates back over 700 years. A valuable treasure of Thailand and Buddhism.

There is a minimal fee of 40 Thai baht for the temple hall to view the Golden Buddha. An additional 100 Thai baht to visit the multi-floor history exhibits at the museum. Since it was already mid afternoon, we skipped the museum visit.

You also need to remove your shoes to enter the sacred place.

SVD Farm, Tagaytay

One of our (sister dearest and I) favorite pasyalan nowadays whenever she is in town is to go on a road trip to Tagaytay. Lunch at our now favorite restaurant Ang Bahay ni Maria at Marta specifically for their peppery and tasty bulalo soup.

We would then explore places where you can breathe in fresh, cool air. A refreshing and relaxingly tranquil haven far from the hustle and bustle of the urban jungle. Last May 19, 2026, it was our frst time at the SVD Farm, a five hectare ecotourism destination with an agricultural farm and prayer sanctuary. The drive towards the farm itself is on a narrow bit of a rough road with an incline.

Admission is FREE. There are ample parking slots available. Please observe SILENCE.

Avani Ratchada Bangkok Hotel: May 1 - 4, 2025

My Bangkok vacation was originally from April 26, 2025 up to May 1, 2025.

Yet sister and I felt it wasn't enough so after asking permission from Mr. Franco to extend our stay.

We booked three additional days.

We also decided to find another hotel. Mainly because the previous hotel was costly. We were already getting 'tired' of eating the same breakfast fare. LOL

We wanted to explore another district/area of Bangkok.

The Avani Ratchada Bangkok Hotel is totally different from the Novotel Siam.

It is located in the Ratchada district which is a bustling business and residential area.

But quite accessible via the BTS and MRT lines.

For me it had a provincial vibe even though it is still located in Bangkok.

I actually quite enjoyed the Avani Ratchada Bangkok Hotel.

It was conveniently located near a big mall where you can find all your essentials.

The area was less crowded and away from the shopping district like Silom, Siam and Sukhumvit.

By then, we were done with our shopping sprees and wanted a more relaxed stay.

The breakfast buffet spread was smaller but still tasty enough to fill our tummies.

Museo del Galeon, SM MOA Complex in Pasay

This spectacular maritime heritage museum opened May 1, 2026 at the SM MOA Complex. It is connected to the mall so it is quite accessible. Tickets prices are a bit expensive but every cent is worth the interactive experience of being inside an actual massive galleon ship.

We went there on May 7, 2026 (Thursday) at around 5:55 PM so we had merely an hour to explore the museum. It highlights our rich maritime tradition from the indigenous tradition of boat making, the galleon trade up to our present day heroes, the Filipino seamen whose indefatigable contribution to the shipping industry is globally recognized.

The Balangay is made of hand carved planks

A strong and flexible vessel totally devoid of any metal materials.

The discovery of nine plant boats in Butuan in 1976 dating between the 7th and 10 century, confirms the uninterrupted 1000 year old indigenous tradition of boat making.

The huge galleon is located on the second floor of the exhibit. There are escalators as well as an elevator so it is very accessible. The entrance to the ship is through a slightly elevated ramp.

Thousands of native men were recruited to provide mandatory paid labor to work
on the building of the 'castles of the sea'. It is said that as many as 6,000 laborers

were hired to cut and haul lumber needed for the masts of a SINGLE galleon.

It could carry supplies to last long voyages and still have space for valuable cargo.
From 16th century Europe spanning three centuries, it was the vessel for world exploration.

Only the highest ranking offiers and important paying
guests were assigned private cabins. Other officers were accommodated on the
gun deck with sleeping quarters separated by canvas curtains.

The Captain's cabin had windows as well as a table used for dining

as well as for meetings for the officers.

The museum is open from Wednesdays to Sundays

Wat Pho (The Reclining Buddha), Bangkok Thailand

First of all, I want to offer my sincere condolences to the Thai people on the passing of their beloved Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha at the age of 47, after nearly 4 years in a coma. Everyone we met in Bangkok and in Ayutthaya were quite fond of Princess Bha, the eldest child of the King Maha Vajiralongkorn also known as King Rama X, the tenth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty. May she rest in peace.

Now back to the third and last stop of our private tour with Sam, our guide. We took the river boat again to cross the Chao Phraya River. Then we were driven to the Phra Nakhon district where WAT PHO is located.

We ate a quick lunch at a local restaurant recommended by Sam and I'd have to say that no meal in Thailand is complete without the ubiquitous mango sticky rice. To say that I overloaded on this famous and delicious dessert during our vacation is an understatement.

Wat Pho, a first class royal temple is one of the largest and oldest temples in Thailand. The 80,000 square meters sprawling temple complex houses the largest collection of Buddha figurines in Thailand.

More importantly, Wat Pho is the location of the 46 meters long and 14 meters high, gold plated Reclining Buddha situated inside a dedicated hall. You are required to wear a sarong to cover your legs and remove your shoes when you enter the massive hall.

The soles of Buddha's feet are 5 meters long and inlaid with mother of pearl.

These 108 auspicious symbols represent a complete map of Buddhist cosmology.

For a minimal amount you can buy 108 coins and then drop them into 108 bronze bowls lining the hall. The tradition of dropping coins is an act of merit. The number 108 signifies the auspicious characteristics and virtues of the Buddha.

Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn), Bangkok Thailand

Let us get back on track of my Bangkok (April 26 - May 4, 2025) trip blog posts series.

From the Grand Palace, we were driven to the river boat station to board a river taxi to cross the Chao Praya River to reach the Wat Arun Temple which is one of Bangkok's most iconic landmarks. Just a short boat ride but quite scenic as you can already see the towering prang of the majestic temple with its intricately encrusted millions of colorful pieces of Chinese porcelain and seashells.

It was a really hot and warm day so I changed my top because I was soaking wet from buckets of sweat. Even my hair strands were dripping wet. Goodness!

The Temple of Dawn has existed since the Ayutthaya Kingdom period (1351 - 1767), its original name was "Wat Makok". It is said that King Thasin the Great wanted to establish a new capital of Thonburi. He travelled along the Chao Praya River and arrived in front of Wat Makok just as dawn was breaking, hence it was named "Wat Chaeng" which means "Temple of Dawn".

A major restoration of the prang (spire) was made in the 19th century during the reign of King Rama II and the name was changed to Wat Arun Ratchatharam and served as the temple of his reign.

During the reign of King Rama IV, the temple was renamed Wat Arun Ratchawararam after further restoration and construction works were done. The primary prang shaped chedi symbolizes Mount Meru or the center of the universe.

You can hire/rent tradtional Thai costumes (complete with head gears and umbrellas) both for males and females then have your picture taken with these majestic prangs as your background.

Inside the Ordination Hall is the Niramitr Buddha statue designed by King Rama II. The sitting Buddha was crafted out of wood, cast in bronze then covered with gold leaf. The base of the main Buddha image is believed to house the ashes of King Rama II.

Museo ng Katipunan

I decided to make a separate post devoted to the Katipunan museum. The Katipunan was a secret revolutionary society headed by Andres Bonifacio aka Supremo and founded on July 4, 1892. Some of its illustrious members included Emilio Jacinto, Dr. Pio Valenzuela, Gregoria de Jesus among others. Its primary purpose was to overthrow the colonial rule of the Spanish government and for us, Filipinos to gain our independence.

History was one of my favorite subjects in high school. But we all know that we learnt in school is just a portion or a tiny fragment of actual events. Lucky for me, I married a history professor so our dinner table conversations are mostly about historical facts and tidbits. Curiosity reigns.

The Museo ng Katipunan is just a few steps away from the Museo del Deposito, and both museums are located on the grounds of the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan.

My former high school, St. John's Academy was just a stone's throw away from the Pinaglabanan Church.

I am familiar with this area in San Juan yet I had no idea there was a two storey, small museum showcasing the Katipunan in all its glory.

The Katipunan, a secret society was instrumental in shaping the path towards our liberty and autonomy.

These fearless men and women risked their livelihood, and their lives so we can now enjoy our freedom, sovereignity and independence from foreign powers.

Kindly excuse the poor quality and angle of my pictures. It certainly doesn't do it justice.

The intricately designed and fully air conditioned museum was quite a revelation with its diorama exhibit of the battle of San Juan del Monte, its informative and well researched historical data, replicas of some documents as well as its vivid displays of various artifacts.

Highly recommended as it is entirely free!

First of all, apologies for running off again from blogging.

Life happens.

Let me interrupt the Bangkok series, by inserting our 18th wedding anniversary ganap (happening).

He took two days off work so we could spend quality time together.

Yes, it has been 18 years of married life.

Despite the betrayal, the lies and the deception, I still chose to stay.

Not a day passes by without me questioning my decision.

My strong faith reaffirms and sustains my commitment.

It hasn't been easy but with God's mercy, I get by (for now!)

We went to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage in Antipolo for our annual May pilgrimage for the 12 noon mass.

Next day Friday on our actual anniversary, we heard mass at the Edsa Shrine where we got married 18 years ago.

Then we visited two museums in San Juan area, Museum el Deposito and the Katipunan Museum.

The Museo El Deposito is a history museum that showcases the Manila waterworks system in the 19th century as well as the underground water reservoir. Both museums are located within the grounds of the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan.

The underground water reservoir is made of volcanic tuff. The cavernous repository held water pumped from Santolan to the various fountains and hydrants in Manila. It was part of the Carriedo waterworks designed by Spanish engineer Genaro

Palacios and built from 1878 to 1882.

The infrastructure project was named after Francisco Carriedo, a Spanish official/philanthropist who donated 10,000 pesos as stated in his will in 1773. It was to fund the first, free public water system in Manila.

Even though it was completed 139 years after his death, the Carriedo waterworks system is a very vital part of Manila's rich history.

From the museum, you step outside to make your way to the undeground water reservoir. You have to wear a hard hat to protect your head. Just a few stairs down and you are in the deep annals of the reservoir. There is a distinct smell of sewage but the steel walkway is well lighted up.

El Deposito was used as an armory during the Japanese and American rule, a hospital for tuberculosis patients as well as a firing range.

It is a small museum and you can explore everything in less than 30 minutes. But it is a good source of information to make us value water as a natural resource and pay homage to the people who created and built this waterworks system which we, Filipinos enjoy until now.

The Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha Temple, Bangkok (April 29, 2025)

A year ago, I met up with sister dearest in Thailand. I was there from April 25 to May 4, 2025. It was a memorable vacay, filled with affordably delicious food, shopping galore, Bangkok traffic jams and sightseeing under extreme humid and hot conditions. This year 2026, sister dearest invited me again to go to Bangkok, I declined for various reasons including budget constraints and prior commitments.

So let me continue my series of posts on our Bangkok adventures.

April 29, 2025, we booked a private tour via Klook to visit prime landmarks which basically is a Temples Run. We opted for a private tour with a guide named Sam because we didn't want to be rushed from one attraction to another with limited time to actually enjoy the places. It was scorching hot so we needed recovery time to hydrate, wipe our sweaty selves and have enough leg room space in the private car. Pick up point was our hotel in the Siam district.

Our itinerary:
(1) The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Emerald Budda Temple),
(2) Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha)
(3) Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn).

Let's begin and focus this post on the majestically enchanting Grand Palace. As you can see from the picture of the map below, the place is huge and it was already teeming with tourists even at 09:30 in the morning.

Entrance fee to the Grand Palace is 500 THB (Thai Baht).

The following attractions are included in the ticket with validity from 29/04/2025 - 05/05.2025:
The Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha
Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles (was not able to visit)
The Arts of the Kingdom Museum and the Masterpieces by Artisan of Queen Sirikit Institute (not visited) and Khon, Thai Classical masked dance. (there is a designated time so we missed it)

In 1782, King Rama the First decided to move the capital city to the left bank of the Chao Phraya River. It covers an area of 218,000 square meters, is enclosed by crenallated walls measuring 19,000 meters. It has a Hall of Residence, Throne Halls, administrative buildings, several chedi (Thai Buddhist bell shaped stupas which are basically towers which hold relics) and temples all within the sprawling complex.

The Phra Sri Rattana Chedi is a bell shaped chedi or stupa of brick and mortar that was constructed in 1855 during the reign of Rama IV to house relics of the Buddha. It was originally white washed but was later covered with gold mosaic tiles imported from Italy during the reign of Rama V to mark the centenary of Bangkok in 1882.

The Prasad Phra Thepdibon Royal Pantheon is a building that has a Prang or corncob spire surmounting its roof. Geometric patters of colored glass mosaics adorn its exterior walls and pillars that are interspersed with ceramic tiles. It was originally constructed with the intention of using it for royal ceremonies and to enshrine the Emerald Buddha at eye level. But upon completion it was deemed too small. Nowadays, life sized bronze statues of former sovereigns of the Royal House of Chakri, Rama I to Rama IX are ensconced in the original three wall niches and on gilt platforms so the Royal Family can pay their respects at appropriate times.

Phra Mondop is a traditional square building with mother of pearl inlay doors topped by a Thai mondop spired roof and was constructed by King Rama I to hold a large lacquered mother of pearl cabinet containing palm leaf Buddhist Tritaka Scriptures.

The famous Angkor Wat in Siem Reap was under Siamese (Thai) administration for periods between the 14 century until 1907 when the province was ceded back to Cambodia which was then a French protectorate. In 1871, King Rama IV attempted to dismantle the temple and move it to Thailand but the Khmers strongly resisted. So King Rama IV conceived a replica in concrete of the 12 century Angkor Wat, an inticate hand crafted miniature of a renowned architectural marvel and placed in within the Grand Palace compound.

Next, it was time to head to the Phra Ubosot, the Convocation Hall which houses the Emerald Buddha. Built in accordance with traditional Thai style architecture with multi-tiered roofs of colored tiles, roof ridges and lotus captal pillars, this building's base on the north and south is decorated with 112 gilded bronze Garuda seizing 2 Naga by their tails while clutching their heads. Pairs of bronze Singha lions guard the 6 east and west doors that have mother of pearl inlays of gods, demons and mythical animals.

It is forbidden to take pictures inside of the Emerald Buddha. You need to remove your shoes to enter the Wat Phra Kaew. The Emerald Buddha is an object of national veneration, carved in the attitude of meditation and is enshrined high up on a tiered base in an altar of glided wood designed to represent the aerial chariots of heavenly beings.

It is carved from a block of jasper, because of its color it is called the Emerald Buddha and measures 66 cms, in height that includes the base and is 48.3 cms in width from knee to knee. It has three different raiments which are changed by the King on specified dates of the lunar calendar. The summer and rainy seasons raiment were dedicated by King Rama I while the winter raiment was dedicated by King Rama II. All of the raiments are crafted exquisitely from gold and embellished with diamonds and precious stones.

We proceeded to a section where the buildings were entirely different in design, structures and style from the temples. Here the prevailing colors were white, with gold tilt and orange roof tops.The Chakri Maha Prasad Throne Hall is a neo-classical stye building with a roof surmounted by three Thai-spired Prasad instead of the usual three domes. The ground floor has rooms used as offices for the King's own bodyguards. The upper floor can be accessed by outside staircases has private audience chambers and picture galleries. The top floor is reserved for the crematory relics in small urns of the previous kings from Rama IV to Rama IX.

Dusit Maha Prasad Throne Hall is a brick plastered throne hall with a spired roof with red Garuda clutching the heads and tails of two Naga serpent statues. It is a building for the lying in state of kings, queens and senior members of the royal family and for holding royal ceremonies of commemoration.

I took my health condition (hyperthyroidism, hypertension, dislipidemia, and worse of all menopause) seriously in 2021.

That year, I lost both parents.

Mommy from a rare form of cancer in March of 2021 and Dad from a tragic fall in June 2021.

April 2021, I was officially diagnosed with Graves disease, an auto immune condition otherwise known as hyperthyroidism.

I've had hypertension since I was about 45 or 48 years old.

I noticed that my cholesterol levels went crazy once I hit menopause which was pushed forward after I had my radical hysterectomy in March 2023.

At first, I would exercise 2 - 3 times a week from home by following a walk from home program by Leslie Sansone on YouTube. This was suggested by my endocrinologist, the doctor who diagnosed I had Graves Disease.

When we lived in Fairview, QC I increased my exercise routine to 4 times a week. I noticed that I was losing weight and toning muscles but my belly, well, it still needed more effort.

October 2023, we moved here to Paragon Plaza in the Greenfield business district in Mandaluyong. A studio unit on the 31st floor with a fantastic view. Its close proximity to everything was a huge factor for me to really improve my wellness routine. I could walk everywhere - church, supermarket, even a couple of malls where I can go for pampering, pay bills, dine out and watch movies.

2024 - early 2025 was a very stressful period for me. I lost my self worth, my self esteem was at an all time low. I was brokenhearted, so depressed, full of rage, really sad - mixed emotions!

BUT.

The only thing I got going for me was to hear Mass daily and exercise!

Nowadays at home, I exercise 5 even 6 days a week. It varies every day. I would exercise for 30 minutes, other days for 45 minutes and when I need huge amount of dopamine, I would do the 90 minutes routine of Leslie Sansone on YouTube.

On weekends, we walk for an hour in the Greenfield district. We would walk around a two block radius for about 4 to 5 rounds.

An hour of walking on concrete pavement where a certain portion goes uphill but not too steep. The area is surrounded by buildings that houses restaurants, coffee shops and commercial establishments. There is also a food truck park amidst patches of greenery here and there.

Early evenings, there is a fair amount of liked minded people who also do their walking. Mostly young professionals in various shapes, sizes and ages. I'd say their ages range from 25 to late 30s.

I'm a highly self conscious person. So for me to actually get out of my comfort zone, to go out for walking, sans makeup, frizzy hair is a huge undertaking, believe me. But I persist as I reckon it was one opportunity for us to bond, especially after what happened.

With God's mercy, I am slowly healing in every way, possible.

Spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally.

Truth be told, I still have a long way to go. I am not yet fully recovered nor healed.

There are days when I still feel terrible and really struggle a lot because betrayal trauma is real.

But my Lord and my God, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary continues to watch over me as He, alone is the greatest healer. AMEN.

So I shoulder on!

Visita Iglesia 2026

This year, it was merely sister dearest and I who did our traditional Visita Iglesia of 7 churches. We visited churches within the Mandaluyong and San Juan areas and some churches located in Quezon City, yet in close proximity to San Juan. The altars of repose in different churches are open for veneration from 8 PM until midnight during Maundy Thursdays.

(1) St. Francis of Assisi, Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong - the parish closest to our former residence in the 1980s - 1990s where our family used to hear mass.

(2) National Shrine of Mary, Queen of Peace - Edsa Shrine, QC - this is where I got married in 2008, not the main church but at small adjacent Chapel of San Lorenzo Ruiz.

(3) Mary the Queen Parish, San Juan - A couple of years ago, we discovered this parish when it showed up on the Waze app. This lovely edifice is located near ICA (Immaculate Conception Academy) and Xavier School.

(4) Sanctuario de San Jose, Greenhills East Village, Mandaluyong - first time to set foot in this lovely church located within an exclusive subdivision.

(5) Minor Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Broadway QC - Another church which we frequented during our childhood years. I noticed that it is easier this year to make the rounds of churches because there were fewer cars on the road, perhaps due to the high gas prices and this oil crisis. This church is huge but this is the first time we managed to park right in front of its entrance.

The altar of repose at Mount Carmel church was located in a tiny hallway adjacent to the main church. It was solemn though but there were very few seats and pews for kneeling and praying.

(6) Carmel of St Therese of the Child Jesus in Gilmore, QC - we accidentally discovered this monastery a few years ago when its gates were open for Visita Iglesia. Normally it is always closed.

At first I couldn't find the altar of repose until sister dearest pointed it out to me. It was located at the left side of the altar and it was enclosed. One of the simplest yet very solemn altars of repose we visited that night.

(7) Sanctuario del Sto. Cristo in San Juan - when we were studying in high school at St. John's Academy, our aunt (mommy's elder sister) would pick us up from our house in Mandaluyong. Her driver would drop her off at this church every day and then take us to our school.

It was our last stop and we reached it at around 11:38 PM. It was mostly empty and frankly a bit eerie but it brought back many fond memories of my high school days at St. John's Academy in San Juan.

The Chao Phraya Tourist Boat is an excellent way to explore the main attractions of Bangkok. It was established on 15th June 2012 and operates between 8:30 AM to 5:30PM daily. The boats depart every 30 minutes from 9 piers including Sathorn Pier, ICONSIAM Pier, Ratchawong Pier, Rajinee Pier, Wat Arun Pier, the Chang Pier, The Maharaj Pier, Prannok Pier and Phra Arthit Pier. From 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM, the route is extended to Asiatique which is a big outdoor market with many food stalls, with a Ferris Wheel known as the Asiatique Sky. It is best to explore it at night.

April 28, 2025 at 11:20 AM, we availed the all day river pass for 150 Thai Baht. It functions just like a Hop on Hop off bus except you are on a boat. So you can alight at any of the piers, hop on back when you are done exploring that area. You can seat on the upper deck to get a better view or inside to avoid the sun. It was quite hot with the sun blasting but the boat ride was smooth and seeing the tourist spots from another angle was a fun experience. This was our DIY exploratory activity because we booked a private tour for the next day to visit the major tourist attractions. I will blog about it as soon as I sort out the pictures, my thoughts and my memory.

We alighted at the last stop, Phra Arthit station from where you can reach Khaosan Road. It is a popular destination for backpackers as there are several affordable hostels there. Many kinds of street food are sold along the whole route. There are also a lot of bars and night clubs. We had a quick snack at one of the restaurants there.

The funny thing is when we went back to the pier to take the boat back, the station was already closed as the last trip was at 5:45PM. Mind you, we were not alone as there were other stranded passengers as well. So we booked an Uber/Grab car to take us back to our hotel. But overall, I'd recommend taking this scenic boat tour as it is a leisurely way to explore Bangkok from the Chao Phraya River.

Quiapo Church in Manila holds a special place in our hearts. My late mother-in-law, Mama De was a Black Nazarene devotee and also served at Quiapo Church. She went there everyday so D practically grew up there.

On my part, my late Mom was a devotee of the Sacred Heart. It is a specific devotion that involves attending Mass and receiving the Holy Eucharist for nine consecutive First Fridays of the month. It is a tradition which I still honor to this day. Today being the first Friday of March, I will hear mass later.

Every Fridays, Mommy and I would hear mass at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Sta. Mesa which was just one jeepney ride away from our residence in Mandaluyong near Maysilo Circle. When I was already studying at UST, Mommy and I would go to Quiapo Church to hear mass during First Fridays.

I don't remember my schedule at UST but somehow I was free during Fridays. We took the Boni - Stop n Shop jeepney route, alighted at Stop n Shop (Sta. Mesa) then transferred to any jeepneys going to Quiapo. On Quezon Boulevard, we would take the underpass and get out at Plaza Miranda which is right in front of the Church.

Back then (the late 1980s - early 1990s), it was quite an 'adventure' to get to Quiapo. Best option is to commute because of traffic and parking spaces were far and few between. The whole area was really crowded with vendors, parishioners and commuters. The streets were dark and dirty. It wasn't safe as snatchers were everywhere. If you were going to Quiapo, it is best to 'dress down', not wear any flashy jewellery and just bring the basics like a small handbag with an abaniko fan and hankies because it was really warm and humid.

Nowadays, the place has cleaned up well, thankfully. The underpass is now airconditioned. The streets are well lighted, vendors are no longer allowed to sell their wares on the streets. There is quite an improvement, and hopefully the city government will be able to sustain and maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of Quiapo. After all, "orderliness is holiness" as the saying goes.

After our Sta. Cruz and Binondo sojourn, we decided to drop by Quiapo Church so we could hear the 5:00 PM mass. It was a nostalgic and special moment for us as it brought back so much fond memories of our Moms, who we both miss so much. A rare quality bonding time together and a nice way to cap a long December day.

Yes, Chinatown in Binondo Manila is the oldest chinatown in the entire world. It was established in 1594 by Spanish governor general Luis Perez Dasmarinas as a settlement for Chinese immigrants (known as Sangleys) who converted to Catholicism. It became an important business and cultural hub, and it still thrives till present day.

After a quick stop at Salazar Bakery to buy some pasalubongs, it was already lunch time. We went looking for a suitable place to eat. Since it was a public holiday, it was beginning to get crowded with a sea and the scent of humanity.

Naturally, we had to pass by the Binondo Church aka the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of San Lorenzo Ruiz. We also crossed the street for some photos of Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz which was all decked for the Chinese New Year.

In Binondo, there are a myriad of activities to enjoy like eating good Chinese food in numerous restaurants which have withstood the passage of time. You can visit museums, shop at bakeries that sell different pasalubong items such as hopia and toasted siopaos, you can say a prayer at the places of worship. Just be adventurous, as it can get crowded, hot and humid amidst squalid surroundings. Yet Binondo never fails to regale you with its unique charm. An enriching and wonderful experience that never disappoints.

Escolta, Manila

Last December 29, 2025 (Monday) was declared a holiday for government employees to allow them to travel for the New Year holidays. So off we went to stroll, explore and experience Escolta, Sta. Cruz area and Chinatown in Binondo, Manila. It has been a while since we were there, together.

Original plan was to take the Pasig Ferry from Guadalupe all the way to Escolta, the station nearest to Binondo. But unfortunately, the ferry schedule is quite erratic. So we drove and parked at one of the paid parking slots on Quentin Paredes street and walked.

First, we made our way all the way towards Jones Bridge in Escolta which used to be the main business district of Manila until the late 1960s when it slowly lost its prime spot. My late parents worked in Escolta area for many years and told us of its beautiful buildings and their historical significance.

It was a nostalgic walk down memory lane to see these now old buildings of business establishments (some of them still thriving). They continue to serve as architectural wonders because they were designed by famous Filipino architecture masters of the 20th century.

At the end of the road, you will reach the Sta. Cruz area where the Our Lady of the Pillar Church (Sta. Cruz Church) holds fort. We were told that when we were toddlers, we used to hear Mass in this Spanish baroque style place of worship that was erected in 1619 by the Jesuits to minister to the growing Chinese population in Binondo. It was reconstructed in 1957 and is now run by the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. In 2018, Cardinal Tagle declared it as an Archdiocesan Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament.

Today, exactly a year ago (January 24, 2025), sister dearest and I discovered this park that is walking distance from her residence. It is located along the Victoria Harbour waterfront in the Sai Ying Pun district. Easily accessible from the Hong Kong - Macau ferry terminal in Sheung Wan with a scenic path which leads all the way to Sai Ying Pun.

The park is named after the historic Chinese figure and it spans an area of 4.2 hectares. Its facilities include a playground, a soccer pitch, two basketball courts, a public swimming pool with changing rooms as well as a sports center with squash courts.

It was my go to place when I needed to clear my head and heal my broken heart. After lunch, I would walk about 5 minutes to the park and sit on one of the numerous benches. Watch people jogging, families playing soccer, see the HK - Macau ferries sail by, while enjoying the cold winter breeze. I would pray incessantly and sometimes even cried my heart out. It was a really miserable period in my life. So much anguish, self doubt, very low self esteem, weighing my options, questioning my life decisions. I still cherish those really precious moments at the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park because I was able to reflect and contemplate in peace.

The Lake Hotel, Tagaytay

It was a spur of the moment decision to head to Tagaytay for sister dearest's birthday, last October 2025.

So we booked an affordable yet conveniently located on the main ridge hotel.

Now it has to be told that this hotel was featured in the news in 2024 because three guests were murdered in their room by a disgruntled former employee who robbed them of their belongings.

It was a gruesome crime in a city that is known for tourism and a low crime rate.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed their small but tasty buffet spread breakfast, the friendly hospitality of the staff, the room itself was basically clean with a large shower area. The parking area was big and spacious. The view of Taal volcano and lake was instagrammable.

We had a lovely time. =)

On our last day before heading back home, we had lunch at RSM Restaurant which is one of our faves for their tasty food and the lovely scenery.

Pink Sisters Convent, Tagaytay

The Pink Sisters Convent is one of our must visit places in Tagaytay. Located in a tree lined hilly environment, it is a very serene and ideal place for reflection. You can write your prayer intentions on a piece of paper (naturally I prayed for my marriage!!!) and the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters will pray for you. Known for their rose colored (pink) tunics/habits and perpetual adoration, the cloistered nuns are also called the Pink Sisters.

The order was founded by Arnold Janssen (founder of the Divine Word Missionaries) to provide spiritual support through prayer for missionaries. Officially known as the Adoration Convent of Divine Mercy, it was established in 1991 by seven nuns, evacuees from Baguio who came to Tagaytay to create a foundation as thanksgiving for surviving the devastating 1991 earthquake in the city of Pines, Baguio.

A slight but short drizzle made the visit more contemplative as it added a misty vibe amidst such tranquility.

Picnic Grove, Tagaytay

In the 1980s to early 1990s, we would go to Picnic Grive in Tagaytay, frequently. It had wooden cabins which you can rent per hour for picnics and also huge cottages for staycations. There was also a playground for kids. It was rustic, great way to commune with nature with densely populated tall trees, and a fantastic view of Taal lake and volcano.

So imagine our pleasant surprise when we visited Picnic Grove again but this time in October 2025. It seems smaller and more refined with fewer cabins and cottages, scattered within the dense forest. A better constructed viewing deck and an observation deck to see the majesty of Taal lake and volcano. It was really windy with a cold breeze from the slight drizzle and soft rainfall. Perfect weather for October.

Entrance fee is ₱75.00 per pax and ₱50.00 per car.

Tagaytay: October 2025 - Day two

Second day started with a small but nice breakfast buffet spread at our hotel. It was great to feast on some authentic Tagaytay fare with a stunning view of Taal volcano and lake.

Lunch was at a very aesthetically pleasing restaurant. One of the newer restaurants located on the ridge. It is located right in front of the Ayala Malls Serin. The place is called Bahay ni Maria at Marta Restaurant. The food was delicious and I like that their bulalo has a peppery taste.

After that sumptuous lunch, a slight drizzle that turned into soft rain didn't stop us from further exploring Tagaytay. Cooler climate with hovering light mist/fog was perfect to venture into Our Lady of Manaoag at Tierra de Maria. H.O.M.E (haven of meditation and enrichment) of the majestic 50 foot statue of Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth.

An intimate chapel featuring a replica of Our Lady of Manaoag (Pangasinan) inside the chapel. It is a serene, quiet sanctuary located on the main Calamba -Tagaytay roadm fronting the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) and near the Picnic Grove. In fact, one needs to park at the Picnic Grove then walk a short distance to the Tierra de Maria.

The gates are open from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM. There is a garden wall vine of murals depicting the joyful, luminous, sorrowful and glorious mysteries of the Holy Rosary. As well as the life of Jesus, the Stations of the Cross and the suffering of our Lord.

Tierra de Maria is a haven for the searching soul, a refuge for the weary traveler, a sanctuary of peace, and a threshold for healing. It is truly a spiritual experience, a piece of heaven and earth, feels like being HOME.
